Strike (2017) s06e03 Episode Script

Season 6, Episode 3

Hello, Bluey. Jago's going to ruin me.
Ruining you is just a bit of extra fun.
I want to know what's going on.
They're dragging me into their
bloody divorce over nothing.
Send me Jago Ross's address.
Don't go over there.
I'm going to put him under surveillance.
I was actually asking you in
the date sense of having a drink.
Oh. Um
Have you heard of The Ink Black Heart?
One of the fans, Anomie,
is stalking me online.
PAT: Isn't this the girl
we had in here a while back?
Edie Ledwell, yeah.
She's been murdered.
Anomie's claiming he killed Edie,
and the Halvening's
taking credit as well.
They're an alt-right movement.
They reckon they're
reviving Viking ideals.
This is Edie's uncle, Grant Ledwell.
I've taken on managing Edie's share
of the Ink Black Heart.
Find out who Anomie is.
We know two people
are behind Drek's game.
Anomie and Morehouse.
Yeah, that could be Phillip Ormond
and Yasmin Weatherhead,
the PA that Edie fired.
Yasmin's the one who brought Josh
the cooked-up evidence against Edie.
Doesn't Kea Niven say that The Ink
Black Heart was mostly her idea?
You must have had your own thoughts
about Anomie's identity.
I ended up thinking
it might be Philip Ormond.
He showed up at North Grove
as this tough ex-cop
who'll look after her.
I'm sure he came there for her.
[ENGINE RUNNING]
[ENGINE STOPS]
- Give me police.
- No.
- No, no, no!
- Shut up!
You gave us an alibi
for Edie Ledwell's death.
You told us you were taking detention.
But we now know that
you sent the student home early.
Why'd you do that?
ORMOND: I was worried about Edie.
I wanted to see her.
How'd you know where she was?
She told me.
Highgate Cemetery.
You knew she was in the cemetery
because you've installed
a tracking app on her phone.
Yeah, with her consent.
She wanted me to know where she was.
You've obstructed the course of justice
by giving us a false alibi and not
telling us you had Edie's phone.
On top of that, you've been arrested
for the attempted murder of Sam Barclay.
Lying to us isn't working out for you.
I want to co-operate. I do.
This is all a mess.
All right.
Do you recognise this person?
That's Yasmin Weatherhead.
Er, she used to work for Edie.
Tell me about your relationship.
She's writing a book
about the Ink Black Heart.
She asked me to consult on it.
How long have you been
passing information to her?
Years, but it's just a book.
I want to be straight with you, OK?
I've got nothing to hide.
The app said that Edie
was in the cemetery.
I got worried, so I literally
ran across the heath
to make sure she was OK.
But then her phone
started moving towards me.
When it got close,
there was this big, bald guy.
He looked like a troll.
And when he saw me,
he dropped something and ran.
It was her phone that he dropped.
It was a vital piece of evidence.
It might have had
identifiable fingerprints.
And you didn't report it.
No,
because I thought she'd be coming home,
and I didn't want you lot
asking her how I ended up with it.
Yeah, because she'd have found out
you've been monitoring her movements.
You've been trying to persuade
the film producers
to let you write the script.
Is that why you kept her phone?
So you could steal her ideas?
Yeah.
MURPHY: Can we get a cup of tea in here?
Pausing the interview at 10:11.
DCI Murphy leaving the room.
Anomie's in the game.
So it's not Ormond.
ANOMIE: Have you got your ticket
for Comic Con Live?
There'll be an Ink Black Heart
stand there.
What shall I say?
Still thinking about it?
BUFFYPAWS: It's expensive.
Nice touch.
ANOMIE: Need everyone there to send
a message to the film producers.
Either they embrace Drek's Game
or they lose the fans.
Make sure you wear
a costume with a mask.
BUFFYPAWS: Who are you going to go as?
ANOMIE: Drek, obviously.
He's taking a risk, going there.
Not if everyone's wearing masks.
There'll be loads of Dreks.
- Yasmin will probably be there.
- OK, fine. We should get tickets.
I was thinking I should
interview her about her book.
I bet I'll get more out of her that way.
Good idea.
[DOOR OPENS]
What do you think?
For an ex-cop, Ormond's
remarkably bad at bullshitting.
Yeah. I thought
what he said about the phone
was the most credible thing he gave us.
If the Halvening killed her,
why would they take her
phone from the murder scene?
There's a risk the phone gets tracked.
Ormond knew that. They'd know it.
But if Anomie's the killer,
him taking her phone makes sense,
for the same reason
Ormond tried to keep it.
They both want Edie's ideas.
Forensics have got it now.
Maybe there's something on it
that the Halvening wanted rid of.
Hear me out. The Halvening
would've known Anomie hated Edie.
What if they approached him
through the game?
Anomie plays along, learns their tricks.
Maybe they help him
get a Taser and a latex mask.
Then Anomie kills Edie
knowing the Halvening
will be on the hook for it.
He makes sure of that
by contacting a journalist
and pretending to be one of them.
Why didn't the Halvening claim
credit for the pipe bomb attacks,
but then decide to claim Edie's murder?
The answer is they didn't.
And another thing. You send bombs
so you can keep a distance.
Stabbing someone is risky.
So is Edie really the same MO
as their other murders?
What do you think?
Well, I
I think it's interesting.
You don't buy it?
I'll keep an open mind.
To be fair to Murphy, he is trying
to uncover an entire terror group.
Yeah. And because of that,
he's going to miss Edie's killer.
Sam! It is good to see you in one piece.
Aye, just about.
Hey, we got Anomie!
We got him, right?
Anomie is still playing Drek's Game.
You're kidding?
What, that was just some
everyday prick trying to kill me?
It has ruled out Ormond as a suspect.
Not sure that's worth a cracked rib.
And we can confirm
Yasmin Weatherhead was
getting inside information
from Ormond. That's down to you.
You must be knackered.
Do you want to go home?
Nah, I'm good. I'm supposed to be
on Jago Ross today.
We can cover it.
Just go home. Get some rest.
Oh. Hi.
Thought I'd check in,
given as it's my money
that's paying for all of this.
Have you got anything stiffer?
I did offer him a biscuit.
There's a bottle in Mr Strike's office.
- Come through.
- Thank you.
Ta.
Pat, could you find me
a fancy dress costume?
Something from comics or TV.
It needs to have a mask.
Are we doing kids' parties now?
Thanks, Pat.
"Bad news, IBH fans.
Mavericker want
to change Harty from heart to human,
and Uncle Grunt's going to let them."
Yeah, that's the one. Anomie tweeted
that a couple of hours ago.
Is it true?
Look, these so-called fans
don't understand how much it costs
to make these films,
and that films need
film stars to bring people in.
No-one wants to watch
some disgusting black heart
floating about for 90 minutes,
so of course we had to cast a human.
That's not public knowledge,
though, is it?
No. No, and it's still
only a discussion.
We can't get the deal done until
bloody Josh Blay gives us the nod.
Now, I wouldn't be surprised
if he's the one that leaked it.
And the grief I am
getting about it is
And I tell you, calling the house.
I mean, that's crossing a line.
Yeah, my wife got a phone call
telling her to dig up Edie.
Did they say anything else?
Well, that's enough, isn't it?
I mean, I got one as well.
Same thing, robot voice,
"Dig up Edie Ledwell".
Did they mention the letters?
Why do you say that?
I had a similar call.
My one said, "Look at the letters
in Edie's coffin."
How many people knew about the
letters that were buried with her?
Well, we didn't exactly broadcast it.
I mean, do you know how much time
it takes to organise a funeral?
We had the twins to look after,
and then my oldest girl.
She says she has to come, even
though Rach hasn't even met Edie.
Probably wanted a day off school.
But I still had to organise
a train ticket from Leeds
and then pay for
a burial down in Highgate.
And then all of a sudden,
we have to ring the undertaker
and tell him to hold off
closing the coffin.
But I did it, though.
You know, I drove over,
I gave him the sodding thing.
So who knew?
Well, the undertaker knew,
and Josh and Ormond knew
because they wrote them.
And then the Upcott woman, because
Josh had to dictate his to her.
But Josh Blay doesn't give a toss
that Edie's gone.
He wanted Edie out. That's a fact.
What makes you think that?
Because she told me.
She rang me last year.
For advice.
Because I'm family.
Because I'm a businessman.
I mean, Josh Blay can do what he likes.
He's never going to get his way.
And Anomie is just an excuse
to try and roger me.
Well, Grant Ledwell will not be rogered
by some stoned art school drop-out.
Do you think Katya Upcott
should be a prime suspect?
Well, I've been saying that all along!
So, it's not Katya.
I can see her walking,
and I'm chatting with Anomie.
Can you hear Gus playing?
[CELLO MUSIC]
Yeah.
Well, he can't play and type
at the same time, can he?
So that just leaves
Inigo Upcott to rule out.
MIDGE: Um, he never leaves the house.
Yeah, I know, but the client's
insisting we focus on the Upcotts,
which is fair enough.
Anomie's still getting
information about the film,
and it has to be coming from somewhere.
OK. Bye.
[KNOCK ON DOOR]
VOICE ON PHONE: It's been ages
since I've seen you.
Corm?
Package for you. Are you there?
Hope you like it.
- Thanks, Pat.
- Who's Pat?
Office manager. This can't wait.
I'm sorry, Madeline, I've got to go.
When are you coming o
Sorry about that.
Was that your girlfriend?
The one who looks like Robin?
Night, Pat.
[ELECTRONIC WHOOSHING]
[ROBIN CHUCKLES]
Well done. You got the colour right.
Well, I'm a professional.
Yasmin agree to the interview?
Yeah. Yeah, she's excited about it.
She hasn't got a publisher
for her book yet,
so she thinks
the article's all she needs.
- What about you?
- [SHE LAUGHS]
Can you take that off? Yeah, sorry.
How are you going to find Anomie?
The one thing we know about Anomie
is that he's got a huge ego.
He's trying to turn Comic Con Live
into a Drek's Game event.
I reckon he's going to want to be
front and centre
even if he's wearing a mask.
- Can I have a go?
- No.
It's mine.
[ELECTRONIC WHOOSHING]
Where are your parents?
ROBOTICALLY: You are his father.
What are you reading?
It's, er A Reddit group
called "narcissistic parents".
I think I might have found
Jago Ross' daughter.
I cross-referenced her social media.
Listen to this.
"He hit my sister so hard,
her eye is swollen.
"I once saw him drag my mum
down the stairs by the neck."
That'd be his first wife.
He beat her up.
She talks about
her sister getting in trouble
for leaving a stable door open.
Jago's got a place in Kent.
He keeps horses.
This sounds like him.
We can't use this to pressurise him,
though, can we?
It'd make his daughter's life
even worse.
Maybe we should stake out
the place in Kent.
He might feel more able to be
himself when he's down there.
Might be our best bet.
Charlotte's got kids
with him, hasn't she?
Twins.
Well, if we do our job right,
she might be able to file
for sole custody.
If her kids can grow up
without an abusive father,
that's worth our time, isn't it?
Mm.
Yes. It is.
[BUSTLE AND CHAT]
Text me when you're done with Yasmin.
- I'm going Anomie-hunting.
- Sure.
Oh! There's the boss!
As you were.
[LAUGHTER]
What did he say?
Venetia?
Yasmin, it's lovely to meet you.
Can I get you anything?
Er, no, I'm all right, thank you.
Well, thank you so much
for talking with me.
I'm sure you'd much rather be
at the Ink Black Heart stand.
Oh, yeah, it's sort of
like a reunion here.
Like, it sort of confirms that the fans
really are at the heart
of everything, you know?
Stories end up belonging
to the people who love them,
just as much as the people
who wrote them.
That is a great quote.
So your book is called
"Inkhearts: A Journey Through
The Ink Black Heart Fandom".
Absolutely. And did you work with
the Ink Black Heart creators
for your book? Um, not officially,
but I worked with
a lot of other insiders,
including the guy who makes Drek's Game,
which is basically like
the fandom's main home.
Um, I've actually been a moderator there
since basically, like, the start.
Well, yeah, I read a bit
about the creator.
He's called Anomie, right?
And what's he like?
- He's really clever.
- Mm-hm.
And cultured and He's overcome
a lot of personal stuff, you know?
Like, if Edie was being fair,
she would have let him
monetise the game, because
it's done so much for the fandom,
and, and it would make
a big difference to him.
So, are you guys friends?
Not in real life. But online,
yeah, of course.
Could I have a contact for him?
Hopefully he'll give me a nice quote
about you.
Er, he's very private.
Oh, that's all right, I'll just get
him to say how wonderful you are.
Um, I don't actually have
his details, but I can ask online.
That would be great, thank you.
And the other creator is called
Morehouse. Is that right?
Yeah. He's not playing much right now.
He's got close with this other mod,
Paperwhite. They're like a thing.
They're always off on their own
chatting, and
I don't want to like,
sound like a bitch, but
I heard she sent him nudes,
which is, like, super tacky.
She sent them to all the moderators
who are guys.
And I, like, I'm sex-positive, right,
and it's her right to do it, but
Do you know what I mean?
There are other ways
of getting men to respect you
without sending pictures of your tits.
Absolutely.
[THEY LAUGH]
Well, I did actually try reading
up about some of the mods,
but it's difficult to get details.
Oh, yeah, we're super anonymous.
So do any of you know each other?
Yeah, well, um, Fiendy and Morehouse do.
And Morehouse and Anomie do as well,
obviously. But it is discouraged.
So how do you make a real friendship
with someone you only know as "Fiendy"?
Well, cos, like, your username
isn't your identity?
Like Fiendy's into football,
and he talks about Yorkshire.
He goes on about the Peacocks
and how his mum's always sick.
You know, you build up a picture
about him, like you do with anybody.
Plus we've all got
The Ink Black Heart in common,
so there's always that.
Well, you are going to be very
well-known once your book comes out.
All right, mate? Having fun?
Always good to see another Drek.
- You play the game, yeah?
- I'm a fan, so, yeah.
You involved in it?
Are you?
No. I wish.
I heard Anomie might be here today.
Has anyone seen him?
Don't think so.
Right.
Well, see you later, bwah.
See you later. Bwah.
And I also read
that Edie Ledwell was targeted
by far-right terrorists?
And it was you who passed on
their fake information to Josh,
claiming that Edie was
working with Anomie?
Oh, I don't
Sorry I have to ask the question.
It's been rumoured that the game
is a hub for the alt-right.
Oh, my God no. I I'm
I'm the opposite of that, right?
And the guy who sent me the files
isn't a racist either, right.
He's black.
So you know the identity of
the person who sent you the files?
Well, not Not, like, officially.
He's an actor.
Can this be off the record?
Can you do that?
Can you say like I had nothing
to hide but it's confidential?
Sure thing.
It's Michael Davide.
So he's the guy who took over
playing Drek in the cartoon.
He plays the game as Vilepechora,
but it's a secret.
And, like, people keep saying
that he's a Nazi
and I really want to defend him,
but it's been a nightmare because
I'm not meant to know who he is.
"Vilepechora"?
Yeah, he's one of
the moderators. like me.
And how did you find out that
Vilepechora was actually a black actor?
Because he told me!
he's actually doing a new play.
I'm actually going to go
and meet him at the stage door
after the first night.
Like, it's the truth.
Um, sorry, I don't think
I think like maybe
I should speak to some more people
before I talk about the book, actually.
- Sorry.
- Absolutely.
Well, thank you for
You've changed your costume.
How did you know it was me?
- Well, I can just tell.
- Oh.
Behind you. Guy on the right.
I think he's doing what I'm doing.
He's going round to every Drek
looking for Anomie.
There is something familiar
about his voice.
I think we should follow him.
Did you get anything off Yasmin?
Yeah, quite a lot, actually.
She likes to show off,
so that was helpful.
Um, she thinks Anomie
is someone clever and cultivated.
I'm not sure she actually knows
who he is, though.
Do you fancy her for Anomie?
Well, she's well-connected
in the fandom.
But I just don't think
she's that clever.
She said the person who gave her
the material to give to Josh
was another moderator in Drek's
Game, someone called Vilepechora.
A lot of the other players
think that he's a Nazi.
Anyway, Yasmin thinks he can't
be a Nazi because he's black.
And do you know why she thinks that?
Go on.
Because he told her,
and asked her to keep it a secret.
What if she's only
pretending to be that stupid?
I think she might actually be
that stupid.
Maybe it's like you said.
The Halvening infiltrated the game,
and Vilepechora used Yasmin
to get the dossier to Josh.
Oh, and I got another lead.
There's a moderator called Fiendy
who knows who Morehouse is in real life.
So, if we can get to Fiendy,
then we can get to Morehouse,
and we know that Morehouse
knows who Anomie is.
What do we know about Fiendy?
They like football and peacocks.
So they're a Leeds supporter.
Peacocks is a Leeds nickname.
Let's start talking to them in the game.
- OK, he's off.
- [PHONE RINGS]
Let's go.
Hey, Midge. I can't talk for long.
Inigo Upcott's out of the house.
He's on foot.
Want me to stick with him?
Where's the rest of the family?
I think they're all out.
Yeah, stick with him,
see what he's up to. Thanks.
Inigo Upcott just left the house
without his wheelchair.
So he can do without it
when his family aren't looking.
Looks that way.
[TRAIN WHIRS]
- Same carriage?
- Yeah.
[PEOPLE SHOUT]
He's on the track!
Shit! Somebody get him!
No! Robin!
Train's coming! Train's coming.
Come on, come on, come on, come on!
[SHOUTING]
Quick. Get him up!
[TRAIN RUMBLES]
[SHOUTING]
How the fuck did you think
you were going to lift him?
I didn't know he'd been knocked out.
He was pushed! They did it on purpose!
Is anyone a doctor or a nurse?
I'm a surgeon.
- Anyone see what happened?
- I did.
A guy in a skeleton costume
shoved him onto the track.
See where he went?
No, I was helping my mate
back on the platform.
She's the one who saved his life.
Well, don't go anywhere.
We'll need a statement.
We've got an unconscious male,
mid-twenties,
with a severe head injury.
Request LAS to attend
and further uniform assistance.
Victim's name is"Oliver Peach".
There's blood in his ear.
You can't smoke in here.
I don't know how you're not smoking!
- Guys, can you step back
- [SIRENS]
That's it.
Ladies and gentlemen, the platform
is going to be shut down.
Oliver Peach is the guy
that got pushed on the track.
He's the son of Ian Peach,
the tosser who ran for mayor.
And judging by the tattoo on his
stomach, he also goes by Algiz.
He's a member of the Halvening.
What, Anomie's killing
Halvening members now?
Anomie told everyone he was going
to be there in a Drek costume.
But he didn't. He went undercover.
Oliver's going around looking for Dreks.
That's how Anomie
worked out who was hunting him.
What do you mean, hunting him?
Anomie pinned Edie Ledwell's
murder on the Halvening.
The Halvening's worked that out.
Oliver Peach is an anagram
of Vilepechora.
Vilepechora is
a moderator in Drek's Game.
Now, I think Oliver got involved
to try and manipulate people
about Edie, and he then
got friendly with Anomie.
They both hated Edie Ledwell.
The Halvening target influential women.
Oliver Peach ends up telling Anomie
how to buy a Taser and latex masks.
But now Anomie knows
the Halvening are onto him,
so he ties up a loose end.
He's obviously a psychopath.
Yeah, I think he is.
Er, Inigo Upcott was not at Comic Con.
But he's definitely dodgy.
I followed him to a cafe,
where he made a call.
And I sat on the table next to him.
Listen to this.
INIGO: My darling girl,
you have to stay strong
and calm.
By rights, the Ink Black Heart
belongs to you.
We both know that.
But you mustn't call me again.
Message me on Tribulationem.
Any chance he's talking to Katya?
I just don't think he'd
call his wife his "darling girl".
What was that Greek word?
Tribulationem. It's Latin.
Er, so we're looking for
a website with a messaging forum.
Ah, here we go.
Tribulationem et Dolorum,
owned by Inigo Upcott,
is a forum for auto-immune sufferers.
But why would he get someone
to message him on the website
and not just email?
Maybe he's worried
Katya can see his emails.
Or it's someone who he's started
talking to over the website.
Someone with an illness.
Kea Niven.
Kea Niven has ME.
And she also believed that
Edie Ledwell stole her ideas.
If she is Inigo's "darling girl"
And remember he was defending her?
Then that would give her access to
information such as the film deal
and well, everything
that Anomie tweets about.
I think we should
talk to them both tomorrow.
I can't tomorrow afternoon.
I've got flat stuff.
But I could manage
a few hours in the morning.
You do Inigo, I'll do Kea,
and make sure
they don't have time to confer.
Midge, can you talk to Pat
about the antique job? We're behind.
Barclay, you need to play Drek's Game.
Find a player called Fiendy.
Oh, their username is Fiendy1-11.
They like football, so talk about that.
We need to build a relationship
before we ask them about Morehouse.
Cool.
Josh and I started dating
at St Martins before I got sick.
And we told each other about
where we grew up, like you do.
I grew up in King's Lynn, where
basically our most famous story
is about a witch called Margaret
Read who got burnt at the stake,
except her heart burst out of
her chest and ran away on its own.
Remind you of anything?
No?
Well. How about this?
Can you see?
I got that after I saw it
in a nightmare during my A-levels.
Edie Ledwell says that she created
Harty and Drek and everything else.
But what she actually did
is steal my ideas and my boyfriend.
[CELLO MUSIC]
[CELLO STOPS]
Hi, Gus. Is your dad in?
My wife's out, visiting Josh.
It's a full-time job,
licking his wounds.
Actually, it's you I wanted to talk to.
It's about Kea Niven.
Go and practise.
You can have five minutes.
Thank you.
Has my wife commissioned you
to spy on me?
Kea is unwell with the same bastard
condition that cut me down.
Helping people like her
is the one
positive thing I've been able to do.
- How often do you talk to her?
- We don't talk.
We use the messaging forums
of my website.
Well, sometimes you talk to her
on the phone, don't you?
When you call her your "darling girl".
You HAVE been following me!
This is outrageous
[HE COUGHS]
..invasion
Have you told your wife you talk to Kea?
Patient confidentiality.
- You're not a doctor.
- I uphold the same standard.
Does that include conversations
about the Ink Black Heart?
She's a girl who needed help.
She's a girl with a substantial
grudge against Edie Ledwell.
A girl who harassed Edie online
and stalked Josh Blay
after he broke up with her.
She's not just a girl
who needed medical advice.
Do you think there's
..a chance she could have been
using you all along?
So many doctors
don't even believe
ME is a real condition.
Mr Upcott, did you share information
with Kea Niven
about the Ink Black Heart?
Kea felt she'd been plagiarised.
I've been a publisher, so I offered
to take a look at her case.
I know what it's like
to be used then tossed aside
when your illness makes you a liability.
That's what Josh did to her.
Did you pass on details about
the deals your wife was involved in?
Like the film deal with Mavericker?
Only in the broadest terms.
For God's sake!
Kea isn't Anomie,
and she's not Morehouse either.
She's an innocent.
I'll let the police know
we had this chat.
- Police?
- In the meantime,
I strongly
suggest if Kea Niven contacts you
for any reason, ignore her messages
until after you've been cleared.
Cleared? Cleared of what?
Of involvement
in the murder of Edie Ledwell.
I think Inigo's been used
the same way Yasmin was used.
Flattered and manipulated.
I'll send you my notes.
STRIKE: I'm nearly at Kea's.
I'll hold off knocking
till I've read 'em.
OK.
Cormoran Strike, here to see Kea.
I imagine she knows who I am.
- She's not well.
- Who is it?
It's a man called Cormoran Strike?
[FOOTSTEPS]
- [DOOR CLICKS]
- Kea? Kea?
Mrs Niven, do you mind
if I use your toilet at least?
It's been a long way,
and my leg's killing me.
Oh OK, um, it's just through here.
I'll go and check on Kea.
Kea!
Kea?
[DOOR CLICKS]
The loo's just
Just fixing my leg first.
Um I'm afraid Kea's gone.
I'm glad she's made a recovery.
Well, she has good days and bad.
That's the nature of the condition.
I've paid for so many specialists and
God, it's been impossible.
She's been ill for so long.
She's already spoken to the police, OK?
The stress you're causing her now is
It's been terrible for her.
I'm here to put an end to that.
Do you think Edie
Ledwell stole her work, her ideas?
I do, yeah, but it's
impossible to prove.
Actually, I think Josh
stole them and gave them to Edie.
But that's even harder, isn't it?
Because no matter how terribly he's
treated her, she still loves him.
Has she been harassed online?
Yeah.
All the time.
We've been hired to find out
who Anomie is.
You know who I'm talking about?
Yeah.
We can help Kea if she helps us, but
- We can't force her.
- Let me speak to her.
- I'd better get going.
- Please!
She can't do it on her own,
I've told her that.
Just let me speak to her.
How did you think you were going
to manage all this on your own?
Oh, well, my dad
was supposed to be coming down,
but he's done his back in.
You know, it still feels wrong
that we got all these
wedding presents and the marriage
didn't even last a year.
It was an excuse to buy you nice things.
If you really don't want
those glasses that we got you
Oh, no, no, no, no,
I fought for the glasses.
[ROBIN LAUGHS]
Matt drew up a spreadsheet
with the cost of each item,
and we took turns in picking until
we'd reached our budget ceiling.
This is what happens
when you divorce an accountant.
Yeah, well, it's not how
I thought it would be.
You're going to be fine.
Actually, I, um
I've been asked out on a date.
Really? Mm. Who?
He's a police officer.
And I said should I bring Strike along?
OK.
So there's work to do
I've got to leave in an hour.
Is there anyone else can help?
Oh, I'll be fine.
There's really not that much to do.
I'll bring it over.
Thank you for seeing me.
How are you feeling?
Not good.
Once the adrenaline goes,
the exhaustion really hits you.
How's Josh doing?
Not good either.
You can help him, though.
I'm trying to work out who Anomie is.
If I say what I think, people will
just accuse me of having an agenda.
Why d'you say that?
People always accuse me of that.
By "people", do you mean
other fans of Ink Black Heart?
I'm not a fan.
I'm a creator.
They were my ideas.
Josh pretty much admitted it.
When did he do that?
He wouldn't want me to say.
He wants you to tell us everything.
Did he say that?
Yeah. He did.
Well, it was after we got back together.
He realised he probably told her
about all my ideas by accident.
He was going to sort it out
so I got credit,
but then she staged that bogus
suicide attempt, and
She was so controlling.
I think he was almost scared of her.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
You know. I never would have run
if I'd known you were disabled too.
Just because you probably
understand how it is
to live with a body that keeps
messing things up.
It's
I don't know.
A traitor.
A good heart wants to escape a bad body.
Do you understand what
I was trying to say with Harty?
I think I do.
I still have some questions, though.
Can you tell me about
your dealings with Inigo Upcott?
Inigo..?
Upcott.
Two Ts.
I don't know.
You approached him on his website
for auto-immune sufferers.
Right, yeah.
Yeah, I asked him for some advice.
Your mum pays for specialists.
Real ones. Doctors.
Yeah. But he has lived experience.
And besides, I only asked him, like,
one thing, and it was years ago.
You've visited his site twice
in the last 24 hours.
Why don't you tell me the truth?
Do you want me to tell Josh you sat
here and lied to cover your arse?
Or I could write up this
conversation and put it online.
No, no, no, you can't do that!
They already make my life hell.
One more lie and I'm out of here.
No more chances.
I get information out of Inigo.
About Ink Black Heart and about Josh.
But it's only so I know
what they're doing with my work!
And it wasn't even my idea
to talk to Inigo.
This other girl DM'd me on Twitter
about his site saying it was
easy to get stuff out of him.
I can prove that. Wait.
Yeah, that's That's her handle, look.
RachLedBadly.
"Rachled"? What's Rachled?
Her name's Rachel.
Username's Rach Led Badly.
Her mum's got lupus. That's how
she found out about Inigo's site.
Rach Led Badly.
Edie stole my stuff
and she stole Josh.
I'm glad she's dead.
I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
She ruined my life, and I get
hate for it from their shitty fans!
Do you mean Anomie?
He's the worst.
Yeah, I reckon he did
this just because I said
I wasn't interested in him.
"This crazy bitch threatened
to stab her ex-boyfriend
and Edie Ledwell
the night before they got stabbed."
I deleted the tweets,
but the internet is forever.
Yeah.
I think Anomie gave out my phone number,
my home address, my mum's work.
Someone from Belgium
called my mum's boss saying,
"Mrs Niven's daughter is a"
I can't even say it.
My mum came home crying.
So if you tell people I'm a liar,
it'll just get even worse.
What about those tweets you deleted
threatening to stab Josh and Edie?
Josh told me that Edie
was meeting him at our spot.
I was angry, but I didn't mean it.
At least Edie Ledwell got rich
before she had to deal with
all this stuff.
Robin still out?
She's moving house.
Today?
How do you not know this?
Hello.
Oh. What are you doing here?
I thought you might need a hand
shifting your stuff.
How did you get the address?
Pat.
House-warming present.
Oh, thanks.
Well, how was Kea?
She's not Anomie.
Ruled her out using Drek's Game.
Something useful.
Girl called "Rach Led Badly"
told Kea how to groom Inigo.
What's the opposite of Led Badly?
Led
Well?
Rachel Ledwell.
Grant's daughter
from this first marriage.
I thought Grant said that Edie
and Rachel never met each other?
I don't think Grant
was the most involved dad.
Kea said Rachel's
a massive Ink Black Heart fan.
And her mum's got lupus.
That's probably how
she found Inigo's website.
Rachel lives in Leeds, right?
Yeah. Why?
Well, if she is
a big Ink Black Heart fan,
then chances are
she's playing Drek's Game.
Yasmin Weatherhead said that
Fiendy supports Leeds United
and they're always talking about
having a sick mum.
And Grant said Anomie
knew his first wife had lupus.
That could have been Rachel
talking about her situation.
Fiendy knows who Morehouse is.
If Rachel Ledwell can give us
Morehouse's real name
Then we get to Anomie.
Well Well, let's go!
Well, we can't leave your stuff
in the van. It'll get nicked.
Er, well, let's go
first thing in the morning.
First thing.
Do Do you want to stay for dinner
after we unpack the van?
Sounds great.
If we're going to set off
first thing in the morning,
it might just be easier if you stay.
That sofa turns into a sofa-bed.
[STRIKE CRUNCHES]
[PHONE BUZZES]
Oh! Pez.
He's been texting me asking
when I'm going back to North Grove.
Maybe I should, um
Make an excuse. Just
Try and play for more time.
Yeah
Hey, Pez.
I'm, er, I'm just
getting ready for work.
That's all right, Robin.
You take your time.
Look, I was calling to say
I don't mind at all.
Truth be told, getting seduced
by a spy is a proper life goal,
you know what I mean?
Er, how did you find out my name?
Wally's told everyone not to
let you back in to North Grove
and to let him know
if anyone else sees you.
How did Wally find out?
You're in someone's video
on a train platform. It's online.
So, listen, you coming over here
isn't a good idea,
but if you want to
go to the pub sometime?
Look Pez, I've got to go.
My name is Robin Ellacott.
And you were the one that
pulled him off the tracks?
Er, yes.
Er, me and er,
a guy dressed as Superman.
You need to get
a stronger door on your flat.
Steel-framed.
Something you can't kick in.
The Halvening won't care
that you tried to help Oliver Peach.
They know you're a detective.
That's enough.
Well, I've only just moved in.
No-one knows where I am.
I'm not even on the electoral roll.
Mm.
[BIRDS TWITTER]
Rachel? I'm Robin.
You're Buffypaws as well, aren't you?
I am, yeah.
And you're Fiendy.
Who's paying you?
I can't tell you that.
But they care about Ink Black Heart,
and they want to stop Anomie.
Nobody needs to know you spoke
to me. I won't even take notes.
Do you think I'm disgusting?
No. Why would I?
Edie was my cousin.
And I was one of them in Drek's Game.
She probably thought we all hated
her, even though it isn't true.
I was so psyched when I found out
it was her that made the cartoon.
I never even told her
how much I loved it.
No-one in my family ever told her.
And then I went to her funeral,
and people online are joking
about digging her up.
I hate it.
Rachel, you didn't cause any of this.
I could have tried harder.
Well, you can help now.
Tell me about Morehouse.
He was my best friend in the game.
He thought I was a guy for ages,
because I like talking about
science and space and gaming,
so I just let it stay like that.
It's so much easier to be a guy online.
You don't get hassled for nudes.
But even when he knew I was a girl,
he was still really nice to me.
Till I messed it up.
What happened?
I found out who he was, and when
I told him, he went ballistic,
and he ignored me for ages.
So I got pissed off
and I made a stupid joke
about him doing wheelies
in his wheelchair,
and he hasn't chatted to me since.
He's got Paperwhite now, so
he wouldn't have time for me anyway.
How long has Paperwhite
been playing Drek's Game?
A few years.
She's liked Morehouse for ages.
You're not supposed to share
personal info but people do,
and I know he talks to her.
One of the last conversations
we had was him saying how he's
struggling with how she might be
if she finds out he's disabled.
How did you find out who he was?
He posted a link on his Morehouse
Twitter instead of his personal one.
It was only there for ten seconds,
but I clicked on it
and it was this crazy astrophysics
project based in Cambridge.
So I dug around till I found him.
He's really good-looking.
I can see why Paperwhite's into him.
You said he uses a wheelchair?
He had a stroke when he was a kid.
You won't tell him
I helped you find him, will you?
He'd hate me forever.
Of course not.
I need a name, Rachel.
His name's Vikas Bhardwan.
He's a doctor in astrophysics
and he lives in Cambridge.
Great work, Robin.
It really is.
Sorry I asked you to sit it out.
Why?
You're a lot better
at most things than I am.
I'm not pissed off with you.
I'm fucking delighted.
OK.
- [SHE SIGHS]
- It is a Sunday, though.
He might be out.
If Morehouse can give us Anomie,
I'll sit outside his room
till he comes back if I have to.
Excuse me.
We're friends of Vikas Bhardwan.
We're just trying to find his room.
Yeah, it's just through here.
[DOOR BEEPS AND BUZZES]
- Thank you very much.
- Cheers.
Excuse me, can you tell us
which is Vikas Bhardwan's room?
Yeah, it's this one.
Is everything all right?
Er, well, we're supposed
to be meeting him,
and he's not answering his phone.
- Has someone gone to get the porter?
- Yeah, yeah.
Porter's not there.
Skeleton keys. Glove compartment.
Can you go with her,
make sure she can get back in?
Sorry, can I just ask who you are?
I'm a private detective.
You should call the police.
Do it now.
What is going on?
Did Vikas talk about a girlfriend?
No, er I'm not sure
that he had a girlfriend.
Um, there's a girl
that he talks to online.
- Goes by Paperwhite?
- I don't know.
He's only mentioned her once.
- When?
- Er, a couple of days ago.
Tell me everything you remember.
This is important.
OK. Er We were going to
go to this thing together,
so I came here to grab him.
He was chatting to someone
in this game that he'd created.
PAPERWHITE: You know who I am.
- Hiya.
- Hiya. Sorry, just one sec.
Yeah, no problem.
PAPERWHITE: I know who you are as well.
I found photos of you.
Vikas, I think you're gorgeous.
Can we go and see Robin Ellacott
together to talk about Anomie?
She mentioned Robin Ellacott?
Yeah, the ghost girl in the game did.
It's this girl.
She's amazing.
She's an artist.
She's beautiful.
She always sends photos,
and I never send them back.
I I thought she'd run a mile,
but she knows and she doesn't care.
Did you find out anything else about her
apart from her being an artist?
No. No, he, um, clammed up about it.
What's going on? Can you tell me?
Still no sign of the porter.
The police will be here soon.
