I am here with Charley Bordelon,
a woman who has gone from
the celebrity world of NBA wife
and manager of five-time,
all-star Davis West
to respected councilwoman
of St. Josephine, Louisiana.
She is considered as you know, one
of the party's rising political stars.
Charley, let's get started.
It's great to be here, Gayle.
Let's do that.
Well, we have several things to get to
today,
both professional and personal.
I think you know that, but first,
I wanna talk about the work
you did during the pandemic.
Especially with those in underserved,
rural Louisiana.
Well, it's a real honor to
work for all of the residents
in St. Josephine. You know,
I came back to Louisiana when
my father passed away
and I found something I never expected.
You know, a sense of community,
that runs so deep within
me and within my family.
I just I couldn't leave
without contributing something.
Now, I'm
I'm no good at farming. [LAUGHS]
- Uh, but for a time
- oh, I don't know about that, Charley.
- I've seen you out there.
- [CHARLEY LAUGHS] well
I do not quite have a green thumb,
but for a time,
I did help the farmers mill.
And now, I help them through the council
and I have to tell you, it is an honor.
Everyday. Especially during
the pandemic.
You know, because of our response,
St. Josephine had one of the
lowest transmission rates in the state.
I remember reading about that.
Can you tell us about
your support of the
black farmers'
arbitration with the USDA?
You know this has been an
issue that the current administration
has said to be taking
a long, hard look into.
[CHARLEY] yes, yes.
I am working with the black
American farmers' alliance,
supporting legislation
to aid black farmers,
who've suffered decades
of discrimination by banks and the USDA.
Due to discriminatory policies,
black folks make up really only
one percent of farmers today,
as opposed to 14 percent 100 years ago.
Wow. So are you saying that the black
farmer in this country
is almost extinct?
This is true. Yeah.
But it doesn't have to be this way.
Not if I have anything to say about it.
We are listening to you,
Charley Bordelon. We hear you.
- [CHARLEY LAUGHS]
- you've become
a local political celebrity and now,
the party leadership is
looking at you for state office.
Clearly, as a first step towards
a much brighter political future,
some say, like Stacy Abrams.
Well,
I'm honored that they've even asked me
to consider running for state office.
In fact, I'm actually here in DC today
for another meeting
with party leadership.
Well, where you are today is a
long way from that day in the arena
when you learned
of your husband's infidelity.
We all watched as you
walked out on that court.
Many hearts broke
when we watched you that day.
And now, there have
been recent photographs
of the two of you together in public,
and I'm almost hesitant
to ask this question,
but does this mean that you
and Davis have reconciled?
It's true.
Davis and I have reconciled.
How were you able to do that?
Because I'm thinking it couldn't
have been easy to work through,
considering all of the previous issues,
and scandals, some would say.
Uh, well, I would say it, too.
Believe me. And I'll admit
we're a work in progress.
But I have forgiven Davis.
We're moving forward.
But in the court of public opinion,
he is still not held in high regard.
Do you think that the public
has forgiven him,
and can he truly move forward?
Do you think that the public
has forgiven him?
Can he truly move forward?
Davis doesn't believe that he can
make amends with anything he says,
but rather by what he does.
Now, you and I, we both know
that he doesn't have the right
to ask that people forgive him
but he has asked me
to give him an opportunity
to prove that he's a changed man.
And I've given him that.
You're right, he doesn't have
the right to ask that of you,
but you say changed. Changed, how so?
Well, he's, he's doing the actual
work to make positive changes
in his life and in the lives of others.
He donates extensively to
organizations supporting children,
and women,
including me too and time's up.
Oh, that's a start.
But mostly,
he's trying to be a good father to our,
our son Micah and to his daughter, Tia.
He can't do much about his past,
but he's trying to
create a better future.
Well, I'm glad to hear that he's
really owned up to his mistakes,
and that he is working
toward redemption.
Mm. You just
You just said a key word.
Work.
We all fall down at some point
but I believe it's how
you get up that matters.
So when you think of your recent
trajectory from basketball wife
and talent manager to public servant
with serious political aspirations,
what would you say
is a common denominator for
your success in both of those areas?
Hm. Well
The word 'no' is my boomerang. [LAUGHS]
Someone tells me no,
and I simply boomerang it right back.
[LAUGHS] yeah.
- I answer their
- Yeah.
'No' with a 'no' of my own.
I just I reject 'no' for breakfast,
lunch and dinner.
And that's, that's the common
denominator for me, Gayle.
[ISAIAH] but you've got to admit,
Garvey was on to something when he said
black folks should go back to Africa.
The environment plays the
biggest part in cultural development.
- [MICAH] that's cool, but
- But what?
What better place to get in
touch with your cultural identity
than in the motherland?
You're forgetting Garvey's
stance on nationalism.
You can still be proud of your culture,
no matter where you live.
I guess you're really
not trying to go anywhere,
'cause that's not what
Garvey was talking about at all.
Oh my god!
You're here to stay then.
You're just waiting on america
to
Give you your 40 acres and a mule frat.
That's not gonna happen anytime soon.
Look, it might, but I don't know,
the only way I'm staying here is if
we end some of this police violence
against black folks.
Not some, all.
Imagine what this world would look like
if it actually cared about
equality and freedom.
I'll do you one better.
I wonder what it would feel like.
Imagine you could just go
wherever you wanted to go,
be with whoever you wanted to be with,
live where you wanted to
live without threat of violence
from police or anybody else.
[SIGHS]
- Hey! A black man can dream, can't he?
- [BOTH CHUCKLE]
yeah, I guess we can.
All right, I gotta get out of here.
Gotta pick up some flowers
for this girl I'm seeing.
I don't think Dr. Stetson will look
too kindly on being called a girl.
That's a grown woman.
Yeah, like, I know, because
you get all red and nervous
whenever she's around,
- and she looks at you
- [MICAH] no.
Like she's gonna devour you.
Don't tell anybody, okay?
No brother, I would never do that.
Get the large bunch. Don't be cheap.
And, uh, you know,
maybe she'll give you an a+.
- Or a little something extra.
- Man, shut up.
- I'll see you later.
- [ISAIAH] see you.
[WALKER] do we have any other signs?
Hey! Hey! Hey! You can't come over here.
This area is a crime scene.
[RALPH] still my land, you hear?

I came because I left our
last conversation unfinished,
and I promised myself years ago
if I ever
had the chance to face my fear that I,
I'd never run again.
What is your fear in this situation?
Rejection.
Again.
I didn't know what you were
going through with Jimmy Dale.
You didn't deserve that.
My assumptions about it all.
My silence.
I've been thinking back on that time,
trying to excavate my memories.
Dig through all the years
of what I thought happened.
It's funny of what the mind
takes hold of as truth.
That might not be the real whole truth.
Well, the truth is
I was a teenager
lured to a secluded place
by a grown man
who wanted what he wanted.
I was flattered by the attention
until I figured out where it was going.
And I got out of there
as fast as I could.
Thank god I was able to claw myself
away before anything happened.
But it didn't matter.
'Cause he said what he said.
And Violet, you,
my own father and this
whole town believed it.
My word was nothing
to anyone.
You were someone to me.
You were my best friend.
I was young and uneducated
about assault and abuse
and the world outside of St. Jo.
I believed what everyone else
believed at the time and
I'm sorry, Billie.
I let you down then.
I won't let you down now.
I'm sorry.
So, what made you wanna test the soil?
I don't know what they doing.
They could be putting something
in instead of taking it out.
Poison. Pesticide.
I don't know, but I don't trust them.
You need a baseline.
See what's already out there.
You're really smart.
Do you know that?
What you talking about?
It's true.
I mean your mind, the way it works.
Your intelligence about the land.
You're always reading, always learning.
It's quite amazing.
Well, you learn everyday.
Thank you.
Of course. It's true.
However,
the entire load of the land
should not be on you.
I found something
that I think could help.
What you talking about?
When I was pulling out all of the
scholarship paperwork for Blue,
I discovered a student account
from when I was in college.
Some of it's, you know, a combination of
student scholarship money
and a college fund
that my parents had been saving for me.
It's administered to them
and I would like to ask them
to send it over to me.
That was college, Darla.
Yeah, I mean, I didn't finish,
unfortunately,
and it's just sitting there.
I wanted you to know that
I'm not asking them for money.
That's the money that
was already put aside for me.
And honestly, I don't even think
they'd even remember it's there.
Hmm.
We need it.
The harvest didn't bring in
as much as we thought.
These payday loans aren't going away.
I don't want to get into more
trouble than we're already in.
I don't like it.
I don't want your mama thinking
we can't take care of ourselves.
And I for sure don't want her
talkin' to Aunt Vi.
Can we just wait on it?
Look, it ain't even a bad idea.
I just need a little more time.
