Nashville s06e10 Episode Script

Two Sparrows in a Hurricane

1 Previously on Nashville I auditioned for "Nashville's Next".
Brad Maitland's show? He cannot be trusted.
You know who that is, don't you? Rayna James' daughter.
You had people shooting at you? Your friends just blowing up in front of your face? I want to turn it off just for one day, - is that too much to ask? - Let go of him, Brad! We'll be talking.
He's suing me for full custody.
The only way that you truly get over someone is with someone else.
- You stayed the night? - I crashed there on the floor.
Dude, look, you gotta just chill.
Just, no.
- You like her, don't you? - Nothing happened.
What's goin' on here? - Omelet? - Yep.
I was gonna make you breakfast today.
Well, I beat you to it.
Looks like you did.
First day.
How do you feel? I'm okay.
What time you wanna head out? 8:30.
And you owe me.
What are you doing up? Uh Go back to bed.
I'm gonna take her.
Nope.
I'm wide awake.
I'll take her.
- What's goin' on here? - Nothing.
Maddie said she's good to take me.
I told you I wanna be a part of this, right? Yeah, and you have been.
There's just really nothing else to see.
This is about me and Brad, isn't it? I'm sorry, all right? I didn't want this to turn into more stress for you.
I know.
It's okay.
All right, your sister can take you today.
But we're gonna figure something out, all right? Perfect.
Thank you.
- I want a full report too.
- Of course.
- Everything.
- Of course.
I think sometimes about How things could have been different One less late night - You spying on me? - Oh! Apparently.
How'd you do that? - Shadow.
- Oh.
Hey, what's that? Don't say nothin' till I'm finished.
I think I found you an open Mic.
And you're completely forgetting about last time.
Just hear me out, okay? It's a coffee shop.
It's cozy, it's quiet.
Might be good to get in front of a small audience in a venue.
I'll be there the whole time.
And that's actually pretty much it.
Why you care about this so much? Because you have a gift.
And I know the more I say it, the less you believe me.
So if you look me in the eye right now and tell me that you're happier here singing to yourself, then I'm not gonna bother you about it again.
But if there's any part of you that wants this even a little bit, why not try it just once? And I do this, you quit pestering me? No.
Look, I'm sorry for coming at you the other night.
I'm just sorry about your nose.
Yeah.
Damn guitar snuck up on me.
Yeah.
I mean, you know I would never do that to you over with someone you're seeing.
Yeah, I know.
And just for the record, we're still totally casual, by the way.
Really? Yeah, we are.
I guess I thought it was more than that.
But now I understand it, and that's that.
I'm not really looking to be with anyone right now.
I mean, every time the doorbell rings, I What? You think it's Juliette? Yeah.
I'm sorry, buddy.
I mean I didn't think, well I just haven't really been talking about it lately.
Look, if you do wanna talk about it or you just need a hand with Cadence or need another person at that fortress you live at, give me a call, all right? Thanks.
Well, well, well, look at all you chickadees sitting here staring out into the great unknown.
[LAUGHS.]
You're gonna learn a lot over the next couple of weeks.
But there's one thing I can tell you all right now - Is anybody sitting here? - No.
- Okay.
- I'm gonna launch one of you so high into the stratosphere, you're gonna forget you were ever sitting here worrying about what fools like us ever thought of you, all right? So savor it! And to help coach you, we have two of Nashville's finest.
Multi-platinum recording artist, multi-3FM award winner, Ms.
Ilse De Witt.
[APPLAUSE.]
And 87-year Music Row veteran, singer, producer, fashion designer, responsible for what is it one, two number one hits? - Try it again, buddy.
- All right.
15 number one hits, Mr.
Tommy Reddick, ladies and gentlemen! [APPLAUSE.]
Which rehearsal group you get? Ilse.
Me too! Preston.
- Daphne.
- So let's get started.
The strategy is simple.
Make the cost so high he doesn't have a choice but to come to the table and settle.
What exactly does that mean? It means we go to war, paralyzing his company with discovery.
Countersuing saying he's a bad father and that you want all parental rights.
You find every person he's ever screwed over in business and you bring him in as a character witness.
Most important, you put your boy on the stand.
I can't do that.
You'll have to.
Judges have emotions like everybody else.
And it's hard for them to side with a man who's cruel to his child.
You don't know Brad.
He lives to fight.
This is his element.
It's my element, I assure you.
And how do I afford this? You don't gotta worry about that.
I'm not gonna let you pay for this.
I'm part of the reason you're here right now, so But even if we go through this whole thing, there's still a chance that we could still lose, couldn't we? I mean, of course, we could.
The man's a bully.
You want to stand up to him or not? So how's everybody feeling? - Excited? - Yeah! Nervous? Yeah? Well, I can imagine.
I mean, I'm still so nervous when I have to sing a song for the very first time.
It's a moment where you're completely vulnerable.
But I think we share something as songwriters.
You know, we move through the world just a little differently than most people, you know.
I'd say we feel things probably way deeper than most people.
And we have this strange but beautiful way of expressing ourselves and our truth.
And when we're in this room, I want you to know that there's absolutely no judgment.
We're just here to share what we're working on as artists.
So breathe, relax.
[LAUGHS.]
So who wants to volunteer and break the ice? Anybody? No? Not yet? It's okay, it's okay.
I don't wanna think about it I don't really wanna know I can't live without it Let's just go What do you think? You do know that you're gonna have to actually look at each other when you do it for real, right? I mean, it's tough to sell a sexy song just staring off into space.
Come on! Does this whole band need to go to couples therapy or what? Is it still called couples therapy if there's four of us? I don't know.
That's a good question.
What would you call it? Quadruples therapy? [CHUCKLES.]
Hey.
- Hi.
- You okay? Yeah.
I'm sorry.
I was just trying to be sensitive to everyone right now.
I get it.
Don't worry.
So what are you up to the rest of the day? Just heading back.
I told Emily I'd be home by five, so And you? All sorts of nonexistent plans.
So I guess we'll each be at our separate homes doing nothing.
Apparently.
All right, then.
I'll see you tomorrow, Avery.
See you tomorrow, Alannah.
Never know unless I try So this is goodbye, dear I think she's absolutely precious.
Yes, but no one's gonna believe a girl that young can be the next big thing in country music.
Oh, they will when they find out who her mama is.
Oh, I didn't know that was part of your scoring category.
We are now in the business of attracting eyeballs.
And every Rayna James fan is gonna be tuning in to see how her daughter's doing.
So as I believe they say in Hollywood, the kid stays in the picture at least, you know, for now.
Oh, it's horrifying.
Yeah.
Which part? All of it, but mainly the idea of going to war with Brad because I cannot imagine winning.
Well, you won't be by yourself.
Well, there's no way that you're gonna pay for this.
Jessie, it's gonna cost thousands and thousands of dollars, right? - You got that kind of money? - And you have that kind of money to just throw away on somebody that's not even your own kid? Throw How is that throwing away, Jessie? Look, Deacon, you're being a good guy.
But this is absolutely crazy.
And you know it's crazy.
Just trying to help.
Well, that's the problem.
That's the whole problem.
How is that the problem, Jessie? Because you can't rescue me! I've spent my entire life being rescued and here we go again.
When did it become this big crime to want to rescue somebody, huh? It's not a crime! I'm talking about me! It's my own weakness.
I need to be able to solve my own problems.
And I feel like there's something wrong with me.
Like other people can make things happen in their life and I just can't.
And my son is now suffering because of that and it just kills me.
And I'm sorry.
I don't mean to take it out on you.
You're the kindest person I know, really.
So solve the problem.
I'm working on it.
There she is! There's the girl I been looking for.
You know, the minute I saw your audition tape, I thought about you in that talent show.
And I said to Ilse didn't I say this? I said, "The world has no idea that this girl is the most talented member of that entire family.
" But you need the right song.
What kind of song? A song about your mom.
Look, I know you don't want everybody thinking that you're just here 'cause of your mom.
And that's admirable, all right? But they're gonna be thinking it whether you want them to or not, right? In my line, they call that seizing the narrative.
You get up there and you make them think what you want 'em to think by telling 'em what's in your heart.
I'm sorry.
I really think that's just too private.
Well, we don't want you to do anything you're not comfortable with.
What? No, no, nonsense.
That is exactly what we want.
Let me ask you something.
Are you an artist? Seriously, I'm asking you right now.
Do you see yourself as an artist? I'd like to be someday.
Look, modesty is not gonna get you anywhere, Daph.
You are an artist right now.
And an artist will always choose discomfort over safety.
Taking all those feelings churning inside and turning it into something, that's songwriting.
I mean, right? Clapton, "Tears From Heaven".
Faith Hill, "There You'll Be".
The list goes on and on and on.
Right? Tell you what.
Why don't you give it a shot? See if anything bubbles up.
What do you think? Okay.
I'll think about it.
There you go.
Good job.
Hey, that girl's a pro.
- If forgiveness hasn't happened yet - Oh, I swear to God, this place was empty before.
When was that? Six this morning? Just give it a chance.
Am I more than my mistake [APPLAUSE.]
Okay, let's hear it for Leah Nobel! Sean, it's okay.
Next, we have a special guest recently back from Afghanistan where he served his country very bravely.
So let's show our appreciation and give a big welcome for Sean McPherson, everybody! [LOW CHATTERING.]
[GUITAR PLAYS.]
People talk about tomorrow Like they know which way to go Like the path that they follow Ain't a windin' twistin' road 'Cause lately it seems I don't know where to go Or what's become of me Won't you bring me an angel Bring me an angel I hear words like "Don't worry" "Sleep it off", "close those eyes" But I found the past ain't in a hurry To make its way off my mind And lately it seems I can't forget Sometimes it's so hard to breathe Bring me an angel Come quick Make me a miracle I could use it Bring me an angel Bring me an angel Mmm [CHEERING.]
[CELL PHONE RINGS.]
Hey, buddy, what's up? Hey.
You wanna come over and write? Or, I don't know, have some drinks or something? Aw, God, man.
I'm sorry.
I'm kind of headed to meet some people.
It's all good.
Just thought I'd ask.
Sorry, buddy.
Any other time, all right? Don't worry about it.
See ya.
[KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
- Hey, what's up? - Hey.
Sorry for just turning up like this.
But, well, I wanted to talk to you.
So is that crazy? I've seen crazier.
[CHUCKLES.]
- Can I? - Yeah, sure.
Look, I'm really sorry about the other night.
I shouldn't have reacted the way I did.
That's okay.
Look, I know I haven't really seen you since then.
But I been thinking about you a lot.
Well, I been thinking about you too, Gunnar.
[CHUCKLES.]
I mean, I have.
I Just, I feel like there's pressure.
I don't want you to feel like that.
I guess I didn't realize how much I like you.
I just feel, you know, you have this idea of me and that's what you're interested in, not the actual me.
Because you couldn't know the actual me yet.
Well, I'd like to get to know the actual you.
- Oh, boy.
- It's okay.
Look, if you're not into this, just say you're not into it.
I don't know what to say, Gunnar.
I'm not into what you're making it into.
I mean, I like you.
I just thought this was gonna be something different.
So you're not ready to be with anybody? Or is it just me? I'm just I'm just pretty shut down right now.
I get it, yeah.
I'm sorry.
No, no.
It's okay.
You know, it's better to know.
Yeah, I'll see ya.
I'm so proud of you.
Was it all right? Dude, did you hear 'em stomping their feet? It was amazing! No.
I couldn't hear anything at that point.
You could have a career if you wanted.
- Come on - No.
You could.
You gotta work at it.
But you really could.
I didn't expect it to feel so good up there.
I think that might have been the start of something beautiful.
And I'm right here if you need me.
Um, I didn't That's not what I meant.
- I'm sorry.
- No, it's okay.
- No.
That was stupid.
- No, it wasn't.
There's a lot of emotions flying around.
- Please don't even worry about it.
- I'm sorry.
I'm gonna go.
Sean! It's always too soon It's always too fast It always Hurts so bad - It's always - [KNOCKING.]
Laundry delivery! - Can I come in? - Yeah.
Come in.
Hey.
Hey.
How'd it go today? It was fine.
We just workshopped some of our songs.
Ooh, how was that? Just fine.
Listen, I'm gonna take you tomorrow.
Can you please not? Can I, please? Seems like you're under a little pressure here.
And something's not right, so I'm just writing a song.
Baby, I'm just gonna stand at the back.
Nobody's gonna see me, just like last time.
I just wanna make sure everything's okay.
Okay.
Okay, that's where we'll stop.
Seriously? I can do a whole lot more than that.
- Here you go.
- Thanks.
You heard from Alannah at all? No.
How's it going? You know, we decided to cut things off.
I mean, whatever there was of it which wasn't much.
- [CHUCKLES.]
- Something happen? Just didn't feel right, you know? Thought better do it sooner rather than later.
Yeah.
Well I mean, that's probably the mature move if it wasn't working.
No, it wasn't, it wasn't.
Yeah.
Hey, buddy, how'd it go? Baby steps.
Please don't think that I've forgotten who you were And are to me There's a safe place in my heart There you'll always be with me Years pass by and we get older There's so much you didn't see But your hand is still on my shoulder Much more than a memory Endless highway Bring me home All I know is That our love goes on Yes, all I know is That our love goes on - [APPLAUSE.]
- Woo! Wow.
All right! Now you all know what you have no hope of ever aspiring to! Oh, come on! I'm already jealous of several people in this room.
How could someone that beautiful be so nice? There's something wrong with this girl, I'm telling you.
- I work with you.
- That's it.
- That's gotta be it.
- Oh, oh, oh.
Who's next, huh? Come on.
Somebody step up.
Daphne, come on up.
Show us what you been working on.
You give me any more thought to the conversation we were having? Uh, yeah.
I've just been working on something.
Good.
Show us what you got.
It's not quite finished yet.
Yes, yes, yes, I know.
It's not ready yet.
That's what we're here for.
Sing, child! It's always too soon It's always too fast It always hurts so bad It's always too long Till I see your face It's always A fall from grace Uh, let me ask you something, Daph.
If your mom were here right now, what would you say to her? I don't know.
That I miss her.
Good, good, good.
What else? That's a beautiful thing to want to say.
It is a beautiful thing to want to say.
But it's not a song, is it? Tell us why you miss her.
Tell us when you miss her.
Tell us what it feels like to miss her.
Look, you You gotta be specific about what you're feeling or else the audience isn't gonna feel anything.
And that's not what you want, right? Hey, Daph? I like where you're starting.
It's a good beginning.
Great job, great job.
Hey.
You left your jacket at sound check.
Oh, thanks.
You didn't have to come all the way over here.
I know.
You wanna you can come in if you I don't wanna break any rules.
Stop it.
We have to leave for the show soon anyway.
Come on.
You want something to drink? Oh, yes.
It's kind of strange.
I'm rarely alone here.
Cadence is staying over at Emily's tonight - because of the show.
- Right.
I'm sorry about the other day.
- Oh - It's kind of awkward.
So many moving parts.
I understand.
A thousand percent.
You know, we all want everything to happen in the perfect time without baggage or complications.
As if that ever happens in the real world.
Sometimes it happens.
It does happen.
Sometimes there's a train leaving a station and you know if you don't get on it, your life will be different forever.
And even though it's crazy, even though you know you should be somewhere else, even though it goes against everything you've ever believed, you get on that train.
Or do you not believe that? Did he tell you to write that song? Daphne? He suggested it.
Did you tell him you didn't feel comfortable about it? He's helping me with it.
Yeah, I know he's helping you, all right? That's not the point.
The point is he's exploiting your feelings about losing your mom for a TV show.
Do you think I'm an artist or not? Come on now.
You know I do.
Then please stop telling me that I'm too young to write about what I'm feeling.
Listen, sweetheart.
You wanna write about your mom, that is fine, okay? Getting your feelings out through your music, that's great, it's therapeutic.
But if you're trying to force something before you're ready 'cause he's pushing you, that is not fine.
That is just picking a scab.
You're not gonna come up with a good song either.
All right.
Good luck on your make-up test.
Thank you.
Here's your note.
- Love you.
- Love you, too.
- Okay, we should probably go.
- Yeah, yeah, right.
[GIGGLES.]
Hey.
I don't wanna think about it I don't really wanna know I can't live without it Let's just go I don't wanna think about it I don't really wanna know I can't live without it Let's just go Where'd he go? His stuff's gone.
We screwed up.
- Why? - Why? Because we didn't think about the consequences.
I thought about the consequences.
So, what? You're okay with this? No.
I'm just tired of thinking about the consequences.
I have no idea what that means.
Because you're a guy.
You don't have to understand.
Oh, that's fair.
Every guy who likes a girl thinks she owes him something.
Ask any woman.
And if you don't like them back, they get mad at you.
They text you, sometimes they yell at you.
Sometimes they stalk you.
Sometimes it gets even worse.
Well, Gunnar is not like that.
Oh, he just walked out in the middle of the performance! So I thought about the consequences, Avery, yes.
Because I had to.
And you know what? I decided you were worth it.
I'm sorry if that was a mistake.
Hey, I was looking for you this morning.
I wanted to talk to you about what happened last night.
It won't happen again, don't worry.
It's not a big deal at all.
The most important thing is for you to keep I told you.
It won't happen again.
For you to keep finding your way.
Doesn't matter what I do.
You know that.
- No, I don't know that.
- Nothing is going to change.
What makes you say that? Because you can't change what happened.
Don't! Could you wait and just talk to me, please? I was a terrible soldier.
Do you know that? No.
Those guys, they were like my brothers.
They were okay.
I was never okay.
I was weak.
Shouldn't have sent me over there.
I was a danger to all of them.
- Stop it.
- What? You know? - You're some expert? - No! All I know is that then was then and now is now.
It doesn't matter what happened.
You can't live like it's then.
There was this patrol in the south.
Three times in one week, everybody's bitchin'.
Why we gotta go back three times in one week? So this third time, I look up.
I see these two kids looking out of a window.
And I knew.
I turned to the sergeant.
And I said, "We gotta stop.
" I didn't even get the words outta my mouth.
I didn't even hear the explosion.
It was like a whole Humvee got just lifted into the air.
Like this really pissed off giant just lifted it into the air.
And I'm in this washing machine going over and over and upside down.
And my teeth go through my lip.
Then my leg's burning.
And I'm thinking how many times can I hit the inside of this thing? I can't hear a damn thing.
And it all feels like it's happening to somebody else.
Well, Billy gets the door open and he's pulling me out.
And then there's rounds hitting the dirt all around us.
And I'm just thinking I need to be firing.
I have to fire.
But all I can see is blood from my mouth pouring over the action and down to the ejection port.
And my finger's slipping off the trigger.
But, Billy, he just pulls me out of the way.
He thinks he's got a shot.
And I just watch him, boom, boom, boom.
One, two, three, boom, boom, boom.
He's a machine and I'm thinking how does he do that? Then his jaw's gone.
Whole bottom half of his face is gone just like that.
And he's looking at me like, well, what just happened? I don't even know.
I'm looking at the inside of his head thinking that's too much bleeding.
I don't know how to stop that much bleeding.
While While I'm looking at him, he's already dead.
Dead from a round that was meant for me.
And when a Blackhawk shows up, somebody's yelling at me to go.
And I can't.
I'm holding onto him.
And they're pulling me.
And I'm screaming, "That's me! That is me!" They don't even know what I'm talking about.
I'm so sorry.
I'll see you later.
You had a change of heart.
- I'm hearing you out.
- Oh, yeah? So, uh, how are Wendy and the Lost Boys? Is there anybody left? - I can leave.
- [CHUCKLES.]
Come on.
So, look, I've been doing this a long time.
And when a talented young woman joins up with a bunch of guys, it follows a certain trajectory which you may be discovering on an accelerated timeline.
Thanks for the insight.
Yeah.
All I'm saying is that you might as well spare everybody the drama of the long slow goodbye.
You go solo right now, I'll put you with my best producers and PR people in my stable to get your music out there in the world.
We'll have your first album out in six months have you on tour within a year.
And to convince you of my sincerity And you get that whether or not you ever sell a single album.
So, you know, think about it.
Hey, Sean, you down here? Sean? Hey, I'm here! Hey, um I'm so sorry I pushed you.
I didn't know what you'd been through.
If you wanna live out your days here to get away from people and have some peace, you deserve to.
It's okay.
I'll keep singing.
What? 'Cause Scarlett told me I had to.
Oh, come on, dude.
Shut up.
Well, you said I can't keep living in the past.
I have no idea how to do that.
But, obviously, you are right.
I don't wanna be right.
I just want you to have something good in your life.
- You tell me something.
- Hmm? Why ain't you singing? I told you, I never wanted it.
Not like you.
I don't believe you.
- You don't believe me? - No.
Matter of fact, I think you're living in the past.
- Thanks for coming over.
- Hey, yeah.
Sorry I got frustrated the other day.
No, no.
You had every reason to be frustrated.
Listen, Deacon, I can't solve this.
Okay.
Well, I told you I'd pay for a lawyer.
And I'm beholden to you for that.
But I can't put Jake on the stand.
And more than that, I can't take the chance That you'd lose him.
Yeah.
I literally don't think he could he'd survive it.
So that's it? We just stop? I think so, yeah.
- I don't wanna.
- Neither do I.
Maybe we could just pretend to stop.
[LAUGHS.]
- Kind of a secret thing? - Yeah.
- Mm-hmm.
- I mean, it's nobody's business, is it? It's not.
But you'd have to lie to your girls.
You'd have to lie to Jake.
We'd have to ask him to lie for us.
It's not fair.
I'm sorry.
[CRYING.]
No.
You didn't do anything.
- I did.
I kind of did.
- My life is such a mess.
I'm sorry I ever met that man! - Come here, come here.
- Oh, Deacon We'll see what happens, all right? - Okay.
- Maybe something'll change.
I'm gonna go.
- I'm so sorry.
I'm sorry for everything.
- No, Jessie.
I'm gonna go.
We'll talk.
I'll call you.
[SOBBING.]
Gunnar! Come on! [KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
Gunnar! Come on, man! Gunnar, open the door.
[CHEERING.]
Okay, Daphne? You're up.
Two, one, we're on.
Welcome back to "Nashville's Next Country Star".
Say hello to our youngest contestant! [CHEERING.]
She looks so beautiful.
Well, hello there, darlin'.
What's your name? Daphne Conrad.
How old are you, Daphne? I'm 14 years old.
- 14? - Yes, 14.
What are you gonna sing for us today, Daphne? A song that I wrote for my mom.
It's called "Memories Crash".
Yeah? What inspired you to write that? Well, my mom passed last year.
And I've just been really missing her.
So I thought it'd be nice to just show her how I've been feeling.
She's okay.
You know, that's beautiful, Daphne.
Did she play at all herself? Yes.
Um, my mom was Rayna James.
[CHEERING, GASPING.]
Now I'm just Wait a minute, wait.
The Rayna James? I guess we're in for some kind of a treat today, huh? All right, Daphne, honey, whenever you're ready.
Go on.
It's always too soon It's always too fast It hurts so hard Breaking just like glass When your heart hits the floor And memories crash I still hear your voice In the middle of the night I forget sometimes Before I open my eyes And the sun comes up It's a long goodbye I'd go a million miles For the slightest chance To be near you To hold your hand It's always too soon It's always too fast It hurts so hard Breaking just like glass When your heart hits the floor And memories crash [CHEERING.]
Wow, girl! Just wow.
Daphne, I gotta tell you that was some kind of beautiful.
And you get a great big yes from me! Thank you.
Daphne, I just don't know what to say.
I'm speechless.
Absolutely, yes.
[CHEERING.]
Thank you.
