1 It started as a gentle breeze, and grew into a hurricane, It swept south from the granite hills, across farmlands, in small towns, across schoolyards and factories, It's the winds of change, my friends, And they will not die down until they have lifted this campaign into the Oval Office! Now, ,, The political insiders may not have seen the future, But I can say, in all humility, that I have, It is full of hope and promise, It is a future of integrity in government and prosperity, (APPLAUSE, CHEERING) And that future is now, my friends, And I want to thank you, On to South Carolina! (INDISTINCT) Okay, everyone, he's here, He's coming, We did it, everybody, We did it! Come in, This is Frank McKenna, Special Agent, Frank McKenna of the United States Secret Service, Agent McKenna and his small band of merry men back here have just been assigned to our candidate, and I think we know what this means, It means the Senator here has been officially anointed -as the front-runner in this little race, -MAN: Yeah! JON TARKMAN: Now, let's buckle up and get to South Carolina, Well, we did it, boys, I mean, we really did it, We showed them all we're for real, Cheers! You are the man, I can't wait to see the polls, We are going to get a hell of a bounce off of this, Yeah, I wonder how Governor Stanton's feeling right now, Oh, you mean the ex-front-runner? I think he's choking on our dust about now, that's how he's feeling, This is no time to get cocky, He's got a war chest and a huge organization, We let him off the canvas now, he could deck us in the next round, MICHAEL DOWD: Well, here's your thank you list for the party leaders in New Hampshire, The new draft of tomorrow morning's speech, And, ,, Oh, here's the copy on that 60 second spot we want to run in South Carolina, Yes, yes, yes, yes, Thank you, Michael, and, ,, Believe me, I will get to all of these, but, right now, gentlemen, I think I need a little time alone, to savor tonight's win, He's not turning in, is he? I promised Will Sunderland a one-on-one, Will Sunderland can kiss my ass, Wallpaper the plane with them, I want to make sure everybody's on the same page, (SCREAMING) MAN: Whoa! -What was that? -MAN: Just a little turbulence, MAN: That was something else, CO-PILOT: All systems green, Captain, No damage I can see, MCKENNA: it's okay, folks, We just had a little lightning strike, -Pilot says there's no damage to the aircraft, -(SENATOR MUTTERING) There's nothing to worry about, Senator, are you okay? I'm fine, I'm fine, Thank you, MAN: Fresh drink? No, no, I'm all right, (THUNDER RUMBLING) Who are you? What are you, ,, What are you doing here? Agent McKenna's wrong, The lightning strike did damage the plane, though no one, not even the pilot knows about it, In exactly two hours and 11 minutes, on final descent, one of the engines will malfunction and catch fire, -forcing the pilot to make an emergency crash landing, -(THUNDER RUMBLING) Seven passengers will die, Including Senator Wyndom S, Brody, CONTROL VOICE: There is nothing wrong with your television, Do not attempt to adjust the picture, We are now controlling the transmission, We control the horizontal and the vertical, We can deluge you with a thousand channels or expand one single image to crystal clarity and beyond, We can shape your vision to anything our imagination can conceive, For the next hour, we will control all that you see and hear, You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the deepest inner mind to The Outer Limits, We live in an egocentric age where many of us believe we are the sun in our own universe, But what happens when these illusions collide with reality? -(KNOCKING ON DOOR) -MCKENNA: McKenna, sir, (CLEARS THROAT) Yeah, SENATOR: Well, where is she? How did she get on board and what was she doing in my quarters? Wyn, it's okay, all right? Just calm down, Agent McKenna and the boys, they took a good look around the aircraft, they couldn't find anybody, Okay? We searched the entire plane, sir, we checked out all the passengers, Yeah, but she was here, I saw her, I, ,, I talked to her, And nobody is denying that you saw, ,, Something, Senator, You said you talked to her? I may have said something, Did she say anything back? (SIGHS) I, ,, -I don't recall, -Yeah, and you know what? It's perfectly understandable, The Senator, here, has been surviving on like, ,, (CHUCKLES) Two hours sleep, tops, right? Like the past week or so, You know, it's been, you know, one hell of a drill, right? I mean, I'm surprised, to be honest, that the guy is not seeing, you know, green elephants drinking banana daiquiris, okay? You know, I must say I am impressed, Agent McKenna, with the way your men responded to the situation, Absolutely, You guys were great, And you know, I can see now, the value of having you on this campaign, Absolutely, Hopefully, the Senator does realize that we take our responsibilities seriously, Oh, I do, I do, Agent McKenna, Mmm, Oh, and, may I say sir, it's a pleasure to serve a distinguished candidate like yourself, Thank you, Listen, like, I can't say I love your timing, okay? Sorry? -Will Sunderland here, ,, -(DOOR OPENS) Gentlemen, You invite a reporter like Will Sunderland to come on board the airplane, and I know it's to take our guy through his paces and blah, blah, blah, But, you know what? We haven't even had a chance to get our bearings yet, I mean, this guy, ,, Use your head, This guy's a barracuda, okay? Are you telling me that I should have expected a Senator to start ranting like that? Look, I'm good, Jon, But I'm not that good, (MOUTHING) We should rig primaries more often, Hmm, well, if this is the incentive, ,, I just might, (CHUCKLES) -(SENATOR CHUCKLING) -I don't know how wise it is to keep doing this, It's just sex, Catherine, Danielle and I don't have sex anymore, -An incurable romantic, ,, -(SNICKERING) To the end, (SIGHS) Tonight validates everything, Everything that I've been trying to do, Everything we've been trying to do, Oh, that son of a bitch thought he had it won, Hell, everybody thought he had it won, But I showed him, I showed 'em all, Wait, wait, what are you doing? Well, the Senator was putting the Secret Service boys through their paces, okay? -Just seeing if they're up to snuff, that's all, -Ahem, It's true, it was just a test, Pretty strange test, Hey, all presidents end up testing their Secret Service details, But your boy is not president, (SCOFFS) Not yet, But we're starting to like our chances, (KNOCK ON DOOR) Here you go, Senator, I hope you find we've hit the mark, And, when you get a chance, Sunderland is anxious for some time, All right, give me a few minutes to look over the speech, and then we'll talk, All right, Don't bother to call in the cavalry, They won't be able to see me, And no, I am not a figment of your imagination, Who the hell are you? A visitor from the future, 106 years in the future to be precise, But that's crazy, I am here on the most important mission a time traveler has ever embarked upon, Mission? What mission? To save a great president from a terrible accident, You're running out of time, Senator, One of the engines on this aircraft will fail in exactly one hour and four minutes, And you will go down with it unless you do exactly as I tell you, No! SENATOR: (FROM OTHER ROOM) No, what you're telling me, ,, -Who's he talking to? -That's a damn good question, I have no idea, No, No, Hey, Senator, How you doing? Listen, anything I can help you out with? Sir? (RADIO STATIC) (MAN TALKING ON RADIO) Senator, hello, To what do we owe the honor? (SIGHS) I just, ,, Couldn't sleep, Anything we can do for you, sir? Well, that lighting strike gave us quite a scare, We had a huge storm front to contend with, But don't worry, I'll get you to South Carolina safe and sound, almost on time, So, there's nothing wrong with the airplane? Nothing at all, Passing out of the storm front as we speak, You can rest assured we'll have a smooth flight from here on, (THUNDER RUMBLING) Good, Hey, there you are, Did you get a chance to go over the speech yet? Wyndom? Senator, Would now be a good time for our little chat? Yes Will, come on, Thank you, Thought you were ducking me, (CHUCKLES) You know, one of the things I wanted to ask you about, Senator, is, ,, -Well, that old phrase, "Man of the people," -Mmm, It really does seem to apply to you, But at the same time you've been embracing the Silicon Valley and in fact the entire hi-tech industry, I'm wondering, are the two really compatible? Well, technology is integral to our country's future and well-being, It's what's driving this economy, And it is the very foundation of future growth, You've become quite the internet zealot of late, Well, the online environment is the only world that I know, where we can all truly come together as equals, What about issues of privacy? Off the record? Just between you and me? All right, There is no privacy anymore, Not to be morbid, Senator, but when they find your body you're completely decapitated, So what are you going to do about it? What are you looking at? What? I know the concept of time travel is difficult for someone who is not of that era, -Uh-huh, -But, ,, A new time-line can be triggered when history is tampered with, (STAMMERS) Wait, you've lost me, In the original time-line, your agenda helps to foster an environment which allows time travel to develop, And we, in the future, are so grateful for you for this, So grateful, in fact, that, ,, One of my peers traveled back in time to congratulate you at your first primary win, Wait, you mean there's another time traveler around here some place? As I told you, my appearance to you is triggered by a neural response, Okay, look, what's important is, by inserting himself in the moment, the time traveler was able to delay your flight by several seconds, Instead of the lightning narrowly missing the plane as it did the first time around, the lightning struck the plane, And that means your friend altered the course of time? Not just of time, Of history, SENATOR: Son of a bitch, Why did he do that? No, I was hoping to get a word with the candidate, Look, you'll get your one on one, but, ,, Later, Look, I just talked to the pilot, He swears this plane's okay, The lightning strike melted a critical bundle of wires near the terminal block, These wires will short circuit when the landing gear is deployed, Causing the engine to catch fire and shut down, Oh, my God, Senator, you're back, Everything okay? SENATOR: Bear with me a moment, There is something called a terminal block on this plane, with wires running in and around it, Am I right? That's correct, Now, would it be possible for the lightning to have somehow, ,, Fried the insulation off of one or more of these wires causing them to eventually short circuit? If there was any electrical problem it would show up on, ,, It would show up on your instruments, yes, I know that, but, ,, It wouldn't show up on your instruments if, ,, It hadn't short circuited yet, Would it? What are you getting at, Senator? Well, let's just say the short circuit, ,, I don't know how exactly it works, but, ,, Well, it causes one of the engines to catch fire and burn out -just as we are preparing to land, ,, -Wait a minute, hold on there, With all due respect, Senator, -I believe you're letting your imagination run places, ,, -No, no, no, no, I think this plane's in very capable hands, -Let's just let these gentlemen, ,, -Just listen to me! Now, I believe that this airplane has been seriously compromised and that we should take whatever actions appropriate to save ourselves, I'm going to have to ask you to return to your seat, sir, And I am telling you that this airplane is going to crash, No, Senator, it isn't, Get him out of here, No, ,, At least check the wires, There's no way to check the terminal block wiring when we're in-flight, Even if we could, there's no reason to, -Get him out of here, -At least consider the possibilities, then, -Let's go, -Look, I am not making this up! I can't tell you how I know this, but it is going to happen and you have to believe me, ,, Senator, it is my job to protect you, even if it means protecting you from yourself, Let's go, JON: The two of you have worked with the Senator a lot longer than I have, all right? He does, doesn't he? The son of a bitch probably goes on to be elected, If history isn't put back on track, a weak president does get elected, Terrorism escalates, riots break out, ,, The stage is set for a tyrant to emerge, A tyrant? Someone who only pretends to be acting out of concern for his people, but is acting for himself, Someone who radically subverts the ideals of freedom and democracy and turns the country into a totalitarian state, It's Stanton, isn't it? It's simple, You steal the Secret Service agent's firearm, shoot out the window of the emergency exit, Decompression pulls the door from its hinges, All that's left is for you to, ,, Jump, (INDISTINCT CHATTER) Crazy, absolutely crazy, Senator, may I sit down? In about 20 minutes, one of the engines on this plane is going to catch fire, forcing us to make a crash landing, People are going to die, Michael, Maybe even you, 19 minutes, You're crazy, You are crazy if you think that I am going to jump out of this plane, -That would be suicide for sure, -No, it won't, We have the technology to rescue you, What technology? All I can tell you is, once you are outside this aircraft, you will be rescued by means so advanced, it'll seem like magic, Oh, Maybe he's right, Maybe there is trouble with this flight, Maybe he's psychic, Yeah, and maybe, my golden retriever can sing Carmen, Do you mind telling me what the Senator is doing over there? WILL: Appears that he's having a conversation, but the question is, with whom? The future depends on you! Unfortunately!
