Now, for those of you unfamiliar with how this works, our students will debate in teams of two, one to take the affirmative and one the negative.
The students will be graded by both myself and our judging panel, and the marks will count towards their final English grades.
So, without any further ado, I suggest we begin.
The West uses the excuse of freedom to run amok all over the Middle East.
They've tried to bring democracy to these countries, and look what's happened.
Violence, death, civil unrest Maybe democracy is worth those sacrifices.
But surely that's just ideological imperialism.
Or maybe the values are just stupid.
Maybe their beliefs are outdated.
Maybe some people need someone from outside to open their eyes.
You're only capable of seeing things from your cultural perspective.
Maybe I'm only capable of seeing the truth.
People should have the freedom to choose what they really want, not be dictated to.
"Pretend" by Emika Feminism paved the way for female role-models such as Lady Gaga, Madonna and Katy Perry.
