Dynasty s07e19 Episode Script

The Mothers

Anew heart? Doctor, are you saying that my daughter? She needs a transplant, yes, Mr.
Carrington.
As soon as humanly possible.
Oh, my God.
Well, is it possible that you're wrong? Doctor, that somebody make a mistake? I wish it were a mistake.
Nut we've had confirming opinions.
Her heart muscle is deteriorating and without a transplant she's not going to make it.
It's important that we have your permission to transfer her to California as soon as possible.
California? The Baxter University Medical Centre where we can wait for an appropriate donor.
Do I have your permission? - All right, doctor.
- We'll make all the arrangements.
[WHlMPERlNG.]
Nlake, this can't be happening.
It can't be.
I'm afraid it is.
We have to face it.
It can't be true.
I won't accept it.
I won't.
She hasn't lived her life and they're saying that she may die.
Darling, we're going to see to it that everything possible is done for her.
Nlake, they're gonna cut open her chest.
She's so young.
She's so tiny.
- How can we let them do that to her? - Krystle.
She's my baby.
I won't let them hurt her.
I won't.
Krystle, darling, wait.
[KRYSTLE CRYlNG.]
Please.
Please, darling, get a hold of yourself.
Listen to me.
We're going to be with Krystina every step of the way.
And she's going to be fine.
You'll see.
And she's going to grow up to be strong and beautiful.
[DANA CHUCKLlNG.]
[DANA MOANS.]
[KNOCKlNG ON DOOR.]
- Mm.
There's somebody at the door.
- I didn't notice.
- I didn't notice.
- Heh, please.
-I'll be back.
- Heh.
Whoa.
DANA: Steven, hi.
- Dana, hi.
Sorry to bother you, I've been looking for Adam all day.
- Is he here? - What is it, Steven? It's Krystina.
Her condition is very serious.
They're flying her to California within the hour.
She needs a heart transplant.
- Oh, my God.
- Oh, no.
Thought you'd wanna be with them before they left.
I'll be right with you.
Um, Adam, look, I know I'm not part of the family yet.
I don't know if I'll be needed.
I'd like to come with you.
We're all needed now, Dana.
All of us.
- I'll get my coat.
- Well, hurry.
- They at the house or the hospital? - The hospital.
- Take my car? - That's fine.
Good evening and welcome, Miss Leslie.
Just put those down there, will you? I'll have this luggage taken up to your room.
Well, be very careful with it, Gerard.
Aside from the millions that I have invested in an igloo factory on the Canadian-Alaskan border, these two and a half pieces of luggage are my life.
Heh.
Would you like me to have a late supper prepared for you? NEN: That won't be necessary, Gerard.
I'll look after my daughter.
Hello, Leslie.
I'm happy you're here, finally.
It's so good.
Thank you.
I can't help thinking about the baby.
Have you heard anything from Nlake or Krystle? Well, there's been no word yet.
Nut I'm sure Nlake will get in touch.
Heh.
You know, it occurred to me on my way over here that I don't want this to look like I'm accepting any charity.
I mean, I don't have a job yet.
Look, I wouldn't worry about that.
I'll get you one in the company.
No.
No, l-- I'll get my own.
I like your spirit.
- Now, have you had any dinner yet? - No.
As a matter of fact, I haven't.
Good.
Let's go and see what we can rustle up.
All right? As one of the Australian Outback's finest if most underrated chefs, I've prepared a meal - you're guaranteed never to forget.
- Heh.
Unfortunately, we don't have any witchetty to start with.
- What in the world is witchetty? - Oh, a great delicacy.
Well, sort of.
We used to eat it with the aborigines.
It's, uh Well, it's grubs.
- Don't you remember? - No, luckily I've forgotten about that.
Isn't there anything I can do to help you? No, no.
Tonight you are the guest of honour.
[HUMMlNG.]
[SlNGlNG.]
To the gulf and back Men know the Queensland Drover Pass the billy around me, boys Don't let the pint pot stand there Do you, remember that? We used to sing it together when you were little.
- Before you and mother left Australia.
- I sort of do.
Excuse me, sir, the hospital's on the phone.
They say it's urgent.
Nill, take Miss Deveraux's things and Dex's things right to their rooms.
One thing about my son, Miss Deveraux, once he picks a business partner, they're usually the ugliest, the meanest, the biggest.
You certainly are the absolute exception.
Ha, ha.
Thank you so much.
And thank you for the invitation.
You are more than welcome.
And you Welcome home, son.
Welcome home.
- It's been a long time.
- Yes.
Well, you've been very busy.
- How's your health been, Dad? - Heh.
Well, let's just say a poke in the eye is better than a coronary any time.
I'm coming along.
BlLL: Excuse me, Mr.
Dexter.
Matt Nailey's on the phone in the library.
- If you wanna talk to him.
- No.
I do not.
But I suppose I have to.
Oh, Dex.
I've invited a couple of your friends - tomorrow night to a little bash.
- Great.
You two, relax.
Make yourself comfortable.
- Heh.
Oh, he's marvellous.
- Yeah.
So, what did you think of that land we looked at this afternoon, partner? I thought it was fantastic.
I could actually smell the oil.
Only Only what? Will this create a conflict between you and that ex-wife of yours? I mean, what will her reaction be? Dominique, Lex-Dex has been dissolved.
The lady got exactly what she wanted.
Total independence.
So let's just forget about Alexis, okay? [JAZZ MUSlC PLAYlNG OVER SPEAKERS.]
[CROWD CHATTERlNG lNDlSTlNCTLY.]
Anybody ever tell you you're a terrific dancer? Oh, a few people.
Gene Kelly, Naryshnikov.
Men like that.
Now you can add Dirk Maurier to your list of admirers.
Ha, ha.
Well, that is quite a compliment coming from the man that World Finance called a financial genius.
As accurate as it is true.
Not that that has anything to do with dancing.
You sort of pirouette around the rules don't you? Occasionally.
Nut it keeps me on my toes.
Ha! Touche.
Well, now, if you'll excuse me.
Um Nefore I lose you, how about lunch tomorrow? Sorry, I'm leaving for Denver tomorrow.
Some other time.
Uh, Mr.
Maurier.
I want to thank you for inviting Alexis and me to your party.
You impressed me, Culhane.
And throwing in the Colby name didn't hurt.
Now, what can I do for you? Well, I'd like to toast your Midas touch.
To the man who's made in the past couple of years with takeovers financed by high-risk bonds.
There's no need to be so polite.
Those securities are called junk bonds.
I'm not embarrassed by the phrase.
Heh.
Who would be at those prices? I'm anxious to become a client of yours.
I guess that's obvious.
Does Mrs.
Colby fit into this anywhere? Not yet.
But I can work on it.
She obviously enjoyed dancing with you.
And she is very attractive, isn't she? Culhane, I'm already sold on the lady.
What do you have in mind? What, sort of pressure? We need to come up with the money for the Four Crossings property.
Excuse me, Miss? Mrs.
Colby's wrap, please? Ah.
So that's what you and Maurier were talking about, hmm? With my name and money thrown in for good measure.
- Listen, Alexis-- - No.
No, Michael.
You listen to me.
I'm way ahead of you.
I know how he operates and I don't trust him.
I just want us to get in on what the man is doing.
There's too much damned money floating around to ignore it.
I'll think about it.
Shall we go? NURSE: I hope you'll be comfortable here.
Doctor Holland will see you first thing in the morning.
Oh, Nurse.
Where will Krystina be? In the next room, Mr.
Carrington.
I don't understand.
Can't we be with her? - Not yet, Mrs.
Carrington.
- Why? She's undergoing preliminary examinations.
As soon as they're over I'll let you know.
KRYSTLE: Excuse me, but Have you been through this procedure before? Many times.
What are the chances? Is it possible to to find a heart in time? Try not to worry, Mrs.
Carrington.
Please.
There's so much I don't understand.
I'm frightened.
And I just feel so helpless.
I do understand, really.
Nut there's nothing more that I can tell you.
I'm sorry.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
Krystle, darling.
Nlake, what if Krystina's not strong enough to wait? - What if they don't find a heart? - They will.
Now you've got to stop doing this to yourself.
Krystina's going to need you now.
You've got to be strong.
We both have to be strong.
[SlGHS.]
[EKG BEEPlNG.]
I'll be right back, Mr.
Carrington.
- I thought you were asleep.
- I couldn't sleep either.
Darling, you've been strong for everybody.
You don't have to hide what you're feeling.
She looks so peaceful.
We can't lose her.
We musn't.
We won't.
We won't.
- Ready? - Yes.
Mrs.
Carrington.
Mr.
Carrington.
Please come in.
Sit down.
Thank you.
[BLAKE SlGHS.]
Dr.
Holland, we've heard a great deal about you.
And the remarkable work that you're doing.
We're We're so grateful that you're on this with Krystina.
I'm going to do everything I can to help your daughter.
Thank you.
I've examined Krystina.
She's stable, and except for her heart she's a strong, healthy little girl.
- Then she has a good chance.
- Let me put it this way.
On the positive side, there's her good health and a 50 percent survival rate Along with that is that she's the only child of her age that we know of who needs a heart at this moment.
And, uh, what about the downside, doctor? Necause of her age, there'll be very few donors available to us.
We've got to find a donor child whose heart is the right size.
Whose blood type and tissue is compatible with Krystina's.
And whose parents are willing to allow their child's heart to be used.
This isn't easy on any of the people involved.
It isn't easy at all.
- And how much time do we have? - Approximately three weeks.
Can we find a heart in three weeks? Hopefully, yes.
But the sooner the better.
Necause your daughter's condition will continue to deteriorate.
You must realise that.
And this donor, how do we find the child? We've alerted the paediatric intensive care units throughout the country.
Three weeks.
Time is the enemy, Mr.
Carrington.
There must be something we can do.
[PHONE RlNGS.]
Hello? Yeah, Dad.
Steven, we've gotta move quickly on this one.
Krystle and I are making an appeal on television tonight at 6:30 California time.
- Will we get it here in Denver? - Yes.
It'll be carried throughout the coast and the Rocky Mountain states.
And at least it's a beginning.
Oh.
Have Dana, and Adam contact the wire services.
Make sure that they tune in.
Then get the rest of the family together, get them over at the house.
They can help out on that end.
In case there are incoming telephone calls.
Right.
I'll get right on it.
DEX: Sarah? Ha, ha.
Aw.
- Dex, oh.
It's so good to see you.
- Noyd, how long has it been? - Heh.
Five years and four months.
To the day.
We looked it up.
At the surprise birthday party we threw for you, that you supplied the champagne for.
Remember? I remember.
Dominique Deveraux, I want you to meet two of my oldest and dearest friends.
Noyd and Sarah Curtis.
- It's a pleasure to meet you.
DOMlNlQUE: Thank you.
- Welcome to Wyoming.
DOMlNlQUE: Thank you.
Sorry we're late.
We got held up.
I had to be here when you three met again.
My son, his old buddy, and the girl that got away.
I suppose you've heard this story already.
No.
She hasn't.
Must she? Oh, but "The girl that got away.
" No, I haven't heard that story.
Okay.
Okay.
Dex, Noyd and l went to high school together.
They both decided they wanted to marry me.
So they flipped a coin to see who would propose.
And obviously I won, heh.
You know, I'm still holding a grudge against you for that.
That didn't stop me from asking you to be best man at our wedding.
Obviously you didn't know that I was gonna get to kiss the bride one way or another.
- Are you all right, Mrs.
Carrington? KRYSTLE: Yes.
- Mr.
Carrington? - Yes, thank you.
Why don't you sit down? Roll tape.
Rolling.
Whenever you're ready, Mr.
Carrington.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
My wife and I have a little girl.
Her name is Krystina.
She's three years old.
This picture of her was taken a few weeks ago, shortly before her third birthday.
As you can see she's a beautiful little girl.
Nut Nut, more important than that, she's the most beautiful part of our lives.
Right now Krystina is very sick.
She's here at this hospital waiting to have a heart transplant.
We don't have much time.
We need your help in locating a donor heart.
Otherwise our child will die.
Uh, in a moment, Dr.
Martin Holland is going to give you details on what exactly is required.
And then we'll flash two 800 telephone numbers.
One directly to the hospital here and the other to my home in Denver.
But before that my wife would like to say something to you.
I know you can understand how much Krystina means to us.
And I hope that you will be able to help us save our little girl's life.
Thank you.
Yeah, Dad.
The extra tie lines have all been set up.
Your appeal will be repeated on the local eleven o'clock news.
And Adam's, uh, down at KPSC talking to them about airing it throughout the country.
Have you been able to reach Dominique yet? Um, no.
I haven't been able to track her down yet, but we'll find her.
- Don't worry.
- All right.
Nye, son.
[TAPPlNG ON TABLE.]
[RlNGS.]
Hello? Yes, we're taking calls about the Carrington baby.
What's the matter, Sammy Jo? Some man.
He said he could help me.
And then he started using obscene language.
[SlGHS.]
God.
What kind of a human being would do something like that? Oh.
Dana, are you all right? I just had to get out of there for a few minutes.
The tension gets so heavy.
I think of that poor little girl, l I'm sorry.
I am not helping the situation at all, am l? What are you sorry for? The fact that you're even here is terrific.
You're gonna be a great addition to the Carrington tribe.
That's a strange word.
It makes me think of warriors.
God knows my dad and I have had our battles.
Nut that's been resolved.
And then it was Adam and me.
Nut I think he's changing.
And I think it's your doing.
Oh, yes, heh.
I'm a fabulous influence on people.
You are.
You really mean that, don't you? Yeah.
I do love Adam.
I have ever since I can remember.
And now I'm going to be his wife.
And a part of his family.
That's a very nice feeling, Steven.
You are very nice.
Welcome to the family.
Thank you for that.
Just put them there.
Get me Nlake Carrington, please.
Here.
Thanks.
Hello, Blake.
Alexis.
I'm so glad you called.
Oh, Nlake.
I just got back to Denver and I heard the terrible news.
I'm so sorry.
I need your help.
Oh, of course.
I'll do anything.
Anything I can.
Well, you've got a newspaper.
With syndicated columnists I'm sure reach millions of readers around the country.
A donor.
Yes.
I'll run a banner headline in tomorrow's edition.
That's what we need.
We need all the attention we can get.
We need it as soon as possible.
Oh, Nlake.
We've seen our children through some crises before.
Krystina's a Carrington.
She's strong.
She'll survive.
I'm praying for her.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
[SlGHS.]
Mommy.
I wanna go home.
Oh, you will, sweetheart.
As soon as the they help you feel better.
I wanna sleep in my own bed.
[EKG BEEPlNG.]
KRYSTLE: Soon, darling.
Soon.
Please.
I don't like it here.
It'll be soon, sweetheart.
We'll all be going home soon.
What is it, darling? It just breaks my heart to see her like this.
Oh, I know, I know.
Now look, you have been in here cooped up for more than 36 hours.
Now, I want you to take a break.
Go on.
- Will you stay with her? - Of course, I will.
Now, go on.
Hello.
You're Mrs.
Carrington.
Uh, yes.
My name is Adele.
I've been waiting for you.
Waiting for me? Why? I saw you on TV.
I know your daughter needs a heart.
I can help you.
- How can you help me? - I can get one for you.
I can get you a heart.
Why haven't you told the doctors about this? You're the baby's mother.
Isn't it more important that I talk to you? Yes, yes, it is.
Mrs.
Carrington.
I don't talk to doctors.
They frighten me.
They say bad things about me.
I won't go to any doctors.
Not any more.
No.
Nesides, well, they don't pay anything.
You're a rich lady.
A very rich lady.
And you'll pay me when I find you a heart, won't you? You'll pay me a lot to save your daughter's life.
You will.
I know you will.
Oh, God.
DEX: When did Steven call? Just minutes after you left to go riding.
- Sounds bad.
- Yes, yes, it does.
You'll explain to Nlake and Krystle why I had to stay behind? Oh, of course.
They'll understand.
Meanwhile I must go to see if there's anything I can do to help the family.
Have a good flight.
And my prayers are with Krystina.
Goodbye, Dex.
KRYSTLE: Anything? It was from a trauma centre in Seattle.
Nut Dr.
Holland says that the child's blood type doesn't match Krystina's.
Nlake, can you imagine what those parents must be going through right now? I feel so terrible for them.
And so close to them.
We're sharing the same pain.
MAN [OVER RADlO.]
: And the search continues this morning for a heart for 3-year-old Krystina Carrington.
Krystina Carrington is the daughter of Blake and Krystle Carrington.
Blake Carrington, the founder and president of Denver-Carrington, the largest oil producing company in Colorado, has requested that if anyone has information about a possible heart donor to please contact the-- Those Carringtons, one way or another they're always making news, aren't they? MAN 2: They're very important people, Charlie.
I knew them way back when.
They were always in the news.
- You knew the Carringtons? - You're damn right I knew them.
That was a long time ago.
Charlie.
How did you ever get connected with the Carringtons? Look, McVane, you're getting out of here.
I'm in for life.
And if I listen to what the doctor says, uh, I'm not gonna be around too much longer.
Heh, you old rogue.
You're gonna live to be a 100.
No.
You and me, we've gotten along real well.
So I'm gonna give you a goodbye present.
What kind of a present? I have a story to tell you.
About the Carringtons.
- You interested? - Oh, I'm very interested.
This is about Adam Carrington in particular.
Heh.
I'm sorry to wake you.
No, that's okay.
I just dozed off for a couple of minutes.
Well, you can get to bed now.
I'm your morning relief.
How's it been the last couple of hours? Oh, just a few calls.
People calling with prayers for Krystina.
Leslie, I heard from Nen that you turned down a job in the family business.
Yes, I did.
And in case you haven't noticed, Adam, I'm the quintessential independent type.
You can be independent and still work with the family.
- Ne a Carrington? - Mm-hm.
It's more than just a name, you know.
It's a world of its own.
And not that easy to become a real part of, either.
I almost threw my birthright away more than once.
And what happened? [CHUCKLES.]
I had to get kicked in the head a couple of times.
It hurt.
But it was worth it.
I know now that to be a Carrington is special.
You think that's funny? I think it's odd.
Can it really be all that important? I mean, don't you think you're carrying this birthright thing just a little bit too far? I might be coming on a bit strong.
Nut I think someday you'll know exactly what I mean.
Uh, Dex, I just got a terrible call.
There's been an accident.
A car crash.
It was Sarah and Noyd and the little girl, Cathy.
What? A drunk crashed into their wagon.
Sarah is unhurt.
Boyd's been killed.
Boyd? What about Cathy? It's not good.
She's in critical condition.
Sarah.
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry.
I know you are, Dex.
The car came out of nowhere.
It was so crazy.
So fast.
And then Noyd yelled out, "He's gonna hit us!" And then it happened.
How's Cathy? She's in a coma.
The doctors are trying to tell me that She's brain-dead.
[WHlMPERlNG.]
How could they tell me that, Dex? She's my baby.
She's so happy, always playing tricks and laughing.
She's not even 4 years old.
I've got to go to her.
Dex.
Dex, that little girl is brain-dead.
But her heart is still alive.
Yeah, I know.
Dex.
Dad.
I know what you're thinking.
This may be a chance to save the Carrington baby.
I, uh You have to talk to Sarah.
I don't know if I can do that.
Do you have a choice, son? Operator, I'd like to place a person-to-person call to Mr.
Nlake Carrington.
Mrs.
Curtis? - Yes? - I'm Nlake Carrington.
I I know the terrible loss that you've suffered.
Terrible loss.
Yes, my husband was a good man.
Nut my daughter Um I'm sorry.
Dex said you were willing to fly out here.
The transplant coordinator said it would be unusual for us to meet.
But I needed to talk to you before I made my decision.
I can't help you.
Cathy's alive.
My husband's gone, but Cathy isn't.
You do know that, don't you, Mr.
Carrington.
Yes.
Yes, I know that.
I know about your daughter.
And I'm very sorry about that.
I'm very sorry that you had to make a long trip for nothing.
Necause my baby's gonna be all right.
You'll see.
The doctors'll see.
They're wrong.
- I'm not-- - Mr.
Carrington.
I know what the doctors told you.
Nut my Cathy is alive And as long as she's alive, there's hope.
I have hope.
Mrs.
Curtis, this might be the most difficult moment that you and I will ever have to face in our lifetimes.
Because Necause we have something more precious than ourselves to think about right now.
You have a child with a healthy heart.
I have a child that will die if she doesn't get a strong healthy heart.
We have a chance to save one of them.
One.
[lNTERCOM BUZZES.]
Yes? MAN: Mr.
Culhane is here to see you, and Mr.
Maurier is on line one.
Oh, well, send Mr.
Culhane in and, uh, put Mr.
Maurier through.
Hello, Dirk.
Hello, Alexis.
Long time no dance.
I suppose you're calling to see if Michael Culhane and I are still anxious to do business with you.
Don't bother finishing that one.
I'm sure you are.
Now, that's what I call supreme confidence.
And you're what I call devastatingly alluring.
So alluring, in fact, that I'm planning a business trip to Denver soon, but I'm going to call it all off unless you agree to come to a cocktail party I'll be giving.
A cocktail party.
Oh.
When? Well, let me see.
I'll consult my calendar.
Yes, I'd love to.
I'll see you then.
What's going on? The business deal with our California friend.
I checked him out.
He's a high roller, but he is shrewd.
I mean what is going on between the two of you? Heh.
He asked me to a cocktail party, not a Roman orgy.
If you think you can cut me out of this deal because my money is tied up What on earth are you talking about? Don't try to double-cross me, Alexis.
Don't ever try.
Is that a threat, Michael? Necause if it is you'd better forget it.
A man tried to kill me once and now he's in jail for a very long time.
[MAN WHlSTLlNG.]
- Just a minute.
- Excuse me, sir.
Just a minute.
Here you go.
What's that for, sir? I'd like you to let me wait for my friend in his room.
Adam Carrington, Suite 1 1.
Uh, I'm sorry, sir.
Nut I'm afraid that-- I just came from a long trip and I'm very tired.
Don't worry about it.
He's expecting me.
- Well, look, mister, I'm-- - Here you go.
Thanks.
If you know me at all, you'll know that I always repay my debts.
Now, you betrayed me.
And I've repaid you.
Ow! I'm gonna kill you.
- No.
No, Neal.
- I'm gonna kill you.
[ALEXlS GRUNTlNG.]
NLAKE: Let her go, Neal.
Let her go.
No one will save you this time, Alexis.
No one.
McVane.
- I thought you were still-- - Still in prison? Call it good behaviour.
Or call it the fact that Mark Jennings was scum.
And he isn't particularly missed, not even by my parole board.
What do you want, Mr.
Congressman? I wanna spend a few moments with you, Mr.
Torrance.
The name is Carrington.
- Is it? - Yes.
I don't think it is.
In fact, I know it isn't, Mr.
Torrance.
What the hell is this all about? You know, prison is like a university.
The knowledge you pick up on, while it's often warped, it's very accurate.
Now I had a certain professor when I was there.
You might say he had a PhD in murder and kidnappings.
And he willed this information to me.
He told me that Adam Carrington, the real Adam Carrington, died the day after he was kidnapped.
You're crazy, McVane.
You're as insane as you've always been.
Oh, no.
I'm totally sane.
In fact, I'm certifiably sane, if you will.
- And I do have proof about what l-- - What proof? I'll be in touch with you soon.
And we'll talk more.
Till then, good night, Mr.
Torrance.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
[PHONE RlNGlNG.]
- Yes? - Hello, darling.
Well, the little girl's mother is a very exceptional woman.
And we're very lucky.
They've made tests on the child and apparently she's compatible with Krystina.
Blake? Is the child Yes.
She's been pronounced brain-dead by three specialists.
There's a medical plane on the way and she'll be transferred to California just as soon as possible.
[EKG BEEPlNG.]
Krystina.
You have a chance.
Krystle, this is Sarah Curtis.
The child's mother.
