Waking the Dead (2000) s08e02 Episode Script

Magdalene 26: Part 2

Our cold case links the unknown woman to the murder of Resat Topal found dead in his office on the 14th of January 1967 alongside this still unidentified white male.
What about our mysterious woman? Twenty-six, you'll not get far! Her blood was found on the mouths of the two deceased males.
Is it possible that you could've been in Soho in January 1967? We used to sneak out sometimes.
He doesn't look like a Turk.
Who is he? Elizabeth? His name is Samuel Knight.
I ran him through the system.
Sole owner of a company called Universal Prospects.
She is a partner in my business.
Right.
At Universal Prospects? Yes.
So why isn't her name on your company register? There were three of them.
They woke us up.
What did they want? They said they wanted Mr Polat's money.
Polat? We found her.
You want me to kill her? Yes.
Stop! He's got a gun! Move! Get someone! Stay with me now.
Come on.
WOMAN WRITHES IN AGONY Calm down.
You need to push.
You're not doing yourself any favours.
It's not doing any good.
You're not doing yourself any good.
Just lay still.
I want my mother! BABY CRIES What the hell were you thinking? I picked up the gun and I took the shot.
You could've put a bullet through the hostage.
Yeah, but I didn't.
Pure luck.
Training, actually.
I've got my firearms certificate.
What's a uniformed PC doing with a ticket? Because I used to be a DS for Serious & Organised.
So why are you back in uniform? Insubordination.
Sir.
How is she? She's good.
She's making progress.
OK.
Excuse me.
His body's gone to Eve.
Hello.
How are you? Have you checked out the? Yeah, I'm just about to get the security.
Just keep it off the radar, OK? You know, I was just wondering What? Well, when I can go? Have you given a statement? No, but I Well, sit back down over there and wait.
I just thought there's something you should know about the man who shot your colleague.
Something you can't wait to say in your statement? He was in a state of fear.
Who wouldn't be? I mean, I think he was more afraid of failing in his task than he was of dying.
Forgive me if I'm not too interested in how he was feeling at the time.
No, no, I don't expect you to be.
No, I suppose the point I'm trying to make is this - what evil can be so great If we're going to get into a conversation about the Devil, I think I've got other things to do.
I should go back to my seat.
Do that.
Somebody'll come and Bring Mrs Andrews into safe custody.
I'm waiting for her to be discharged, sir.
Well, why don't you go and wait for her by her bedside, you yappy little? Do you have to be so rude? Boyd? Yes? I ran the prints on the gun from the hospital.
And? I've got a hit.
To what? Our cold case.
Are you sure? Yes.
Secondary prints are a match to the print on the sword that killed Resat Topal.
OK.
Thanks.
Oi! Come back here.
Not you.
Who handled the gun? The gunman, me and the priest.
That's everything I can recall.
It all happened so fast.
Why were you in the hospital? I was visiting some parishioners Don't give me any bullshit in this interview, right? I saw her face in the newspaper and I thought I knew her.
Elizabeth Andrews? Yes.
And did you? Yes.
I have your fingerprints on a murder weapon.
Soho, 1967.
I see.
And I have Elizabeth Andrews' DNA on the two bodies of the dead men found at a crime scene.
THIS crime scene.
So what happened? I can't tell you that.
You think that's going to help her? No.
What I mean is I don't know what happened.
How did you come to be at the crime scene? I followed her there.
Well, how did she come to be at the crime scene? Because of him.
Who's he? Her downfall.
Does her downfall have a name? His name was Mick.
Mick O'Hare.
Was he the boyfriend? That's one word for it, I suppose.
A horny, young buck who'd say Mass to a girl to get what he wanted.
Was there more than one horny, young buck in her life? She was as pure as an infant to the world.
She was a teenage girl.
Yes, but she'd only been in the world a matter of weeks.
What did she do, then? Drop out of heaven? She was born into a Magdalene convent home in Ireland.
Her mother died giving birth.
She was raised there by the nuns.
How did she end up in London? He led her here.
She took sanctuary with me for a while and then he came for her.
Got her a job.
A nightclub in Soho.
'I was just about to go in and get her when she came running out.
' Michelle! You've got to help me, Father! I think they're dead! Ssh! It's Mick! Let's have a look.
I checked the men for signs of life.
Is he dead? Yes.
Father, I Stop.
I don't want to know.
But Father I don't want to know.
Whatever happened in there is done.
So you're going to walk out of here with me now and put this behind you.
But Mick is Ssh! Mick is with his maker.
Listen to me.
We're going to put your coat on, yeah? And we're going to leave this place.
And you are not going to look back.
Yes.
Come on.
I then took her to St Mary's Hospital to make sure she hadn't been raped.
Why didn't you take her to the police? Why would I do that? Because it's the law.
I felt it right that she be given the chance to start afresh.
But you didn't know what she'd done.
No.
Did you ask her? I knew that if one day whatever it was came out, then I would be sitting right where I am now.
So you've been keeping an eye on her over the years, have you? Yes.
Yes, she came to St Anthony's every now and then, so when I saw her in the paper I So what happens now? I'm going to put you in a cell.
I am a suspect for the murders? We know the club was a brothel and I can see a situation where she got into trouble there, and you came to her rescue a little earlier than you said.
In that case I can openly admit to you that, if I had found that child being put to prostitution by those men, I'd've killed the two of them with my bare hands.
Do you want to make a phone call? Thank you.
I've already made my call.
To The Boss.
HE SPEAKS TURKISH His DNA is a match to the blood on the airbag of the crashed car.
And I can confirm that he's one of the three men who raped Elizabeth.
Also, this tattoo on the inside of his forearm might be significant.
It's Turkish.
It means a Wolf of the Valley.
It leads us to believe he's a Tamurat.
It's a Mafia-style crime group, structured round the family.
Godfather at the head, under bosses, down to the soldiers.
Wolves of the Valley is a subgroup.
So is he a foot soldier or a field commander? Well, this tattoo's only recent, maybe only six months old.
Suggesting that he's A new recruit.
I've got the file from the St Mary's Hospital.
1967.
Oh, thanks, Spence.
Thanks.
I want to see you in my office.
Now.
Boyd? Take a look at this.
When Elizabeth Andrews was brought into hospital two days ago she was given a full medical examination, here, and these are the photos.
Lacerations, as you'd expect.
You see? These are the key photos.
This is the file for St Mary's Hospital, January 1967.
The doctors who examined her there were so concerned by her injuries that they took these photos of the girl and filed them with Social Services.
Answer me! What these photos show is evidence of repeated childhood beatings of such ferocity that they resulted in these severe scarrings.
I can understand the doctors' concern.
What's interesting, looking at these photos, is just how much scarring there is.
Scars are, essentially, an evascular, fibrous tissue which may fade over time and become more difficult to see as the years go by but they will still be there.
And, given how much scarring there is, you would expect to see something here.
And Elizabeth has no scarring? And no evidence of cosmetic surgery to remove any.
That leaves only one possibility.
Cops.
Shit.
It's her.
It's her! Stop the car.
Thank you.
I need to speak to DSI Boyd.
Now.
When you came to the hospital you were looking for this woman? Yes.
And she didn't recognise you? She'd lost her memory.
No, the reason she didn't know you is because the woman you met in the hospital was, in fact Elizabeth Andrews.
This woman.
What? It looks like the same person.
They're twins.
Twins? I'd no idea.
This is the woman you knew who was at the crime scene with you in 1967.
Now we have a problem, in that this woman has been mistaken for Elizabeth and has been abducted by the men who killed Elizabeth's husband and raped her repeatedly.
So we need to know about this woman.
Well, I think she works for Social Services.
I've no idea where she stays.
she's never told me and I've never asked her.
Do you know her name? Michelle English.
Not her real name, of course.
How do you mean? She doesn't know her real name, she never had one.
Why didn't the nuns give her a name? The practice of anonymity, of not naming the babies was meant to help with the adoption process.
And what happened to them if they weren't adopted? The poor souls lived out their lives at the convent.
A terrible chapter.
So they split them up.
Answer me.
Answer me.
What did he promise you? Answer me! You think you'll best me.
You not talk to me? No smile for me, no? Careful.
I think she has gone crazy.
Look at her eyes.
Are you crazy? A little kiss for me? Mm.
You smell good.
HE SCREAMS I kill you! No, no, no! Go! So you have lost your memory, eh? You probably think that I'm being cruel.
But what you don't understand is, you were born with a great sin, and you inherited that sin from your mother.
And, just as Mary Magdalene washed the feet of our Lord to clean away her sins, so must you wash in the laundry to wash away your sin.
Because if you don't wash away the sin, it will be passed on to your children.
Do you understand? So answer me.
What did he promise you? Answer me! Why won't you speak? There is something different.
Hayir.
You play games.
Game, eh? Play game? Play game? Speak! HE SPEAKS TURKISH If we kill her, we have nothing.
Why won't you speak? HE SPEAKS TURKISH This is Coban.
You must come to the house now.
Do you think we could let PC Howard go now? Yeah, sure.
Just tell her to go.
It's not my place to.
I don't really think it's a question of place, is it? You just go in here, open the door, and say, you can go now.
Good luck with everything.
Just like that, you see? And thank you.
And thank you.
You're welcome, sir.
How was that? When are you going to see Stella? When I've not got such a lot to do.
I've got a list of known Tamurats from Interpol.
Try the name Polat.
Polat.
He's there.
He's only come to their attention in the last two years.
Tribal leader from an area known as The Valley of the Wolves.
OK, bring up Knight's company files.
We're looking for some kind of Turkish deal.
Uygan Polat? Knight was managing an investment portfolio for Polat worth six million sterling.
How do these these guys are just peasants, how do they get hold of six million? We gave it to them.
When we invaded Iraq.
Selling their oil exploration rights.
And we've been stupid enough to buy them.
We opened up the country to privateers and oil companies and people like Polat have enjoyed the benefits.
This region is disputed ownership, the control fluctuates between the Kurds and the Turks, so why are the oil companies giving millions to Turkish tribesmen? Because the oilmen think the Turks will win.
OK, so where's Polat's six million now, then? I guess that's what he wants to know.
Check out Knight's movements over the past two weeks.
OK.
Elizabeth, I want you to look at that photograph.
I don't smoke.
What is that? We believe it's your twin.
That's impossible.
Isn't it? When I asked you earlier about January 1967, it was because we'd found your DNA at the crime scene.
We've since learned it was your identical DNA, in fact, her DNA.
And that can only occur in identical twins.
I used to dream I had a sister.
When I was a child.
A dead sister.
Just a dream.
No, not dreams.
Memories.
Where did you get this? She was outside the hospital.
We think she must have seen your photograph in the paper and come to find you.
Where is she? Well, that's what we're trying to find out.
You don't know? We think we can find her but we'll need your help.
How? Have you seen those men before? Yes.
Where? They're the men who killed my husband.
And raped me.
Please don't tell me they've mistaken her for me.
Yes.
They've kidnapped her.
And we need to find the link.
What link? We believe someone close to you gave these men access to your home.
Who? Samuel Knight.
No.
We know you were having an affair.
I'm not here to judge you, we just want to get her back.
What can you tell me about Samuel? Tony introduced us, they were skiing buddies.
We just had fun.
What kind of fun? Tony always wanted to go too far.
First of all it was the booze, then it was the coke.
I set him up in a small business.
Tony was reckless.
Samuel was the opposite.
He's always there for me.
Does he have access to your home? Yeah.
BELL TOLLS Will you be in trouble for the orange? Not if they don't know.
I don't want you to get in any trouble.
I won't.
I promise.
Are you in here because you had a baby? Yes.
A little boy.
Where is he? He's in America.
A rich American couple came and adopted him and took him to Hollywood.
That's where they make all the movies.
That's good, then, isn't it? That's better than here.
Yes, it is.
Do you think he'll be in a movie? He might be.
My mother is in hell.
Who told you that? Sister Margaret.
Sure, how would she know? Would she not know? Course she wouldn't.
You don't mind her.
I bet your mother's in heaven.
I bet that too.
And my sister.
Your sister? I think I had a sister and she died.
Did Sister Margaret tell you that too? No.
I just think that sometimes.
Why? I dream about her.
Can I be your daughter? I don't think they'd allow me to adopt you.
I mean in here.
I don't understand.
Pretend.
Come here to me.
Course I'll be your mammy.
Boyd! We can put Knight in Switzerland on the dates of the attack on Elizabeth and the money transfer.
He flew out to Geneva on the 24th.
Why am I back in here? I answered all your questions.
Take off your shoes.
What?! Your shoes, belt, tie.
Empty your pockets and put your personal belongings in this tray.
Why? You're under arrest.
Arrest? For what?! Conspiracy to murder.
I'd like to speak to a solicitor please.
Oh, you'll get one.
Now hurry up.
Come on.
Now.
I have nothing to say.
I haven't asked you anything yet.
I was just saying For someone with nothing to say you're making a bad job of it.
I was setting out my position.
How's this for a position? Shut up.
I know all about you and Elizabeth Andrews.
I don't You had a chance to speak and you said that you had nothing to say, so will you please let me speak?! We've been through your books.
Universal Prospects is bust.
You're a financial deadbeat, you're a hobo in a suit.
You are sucking like a little parasite from the tit of your business partner.
I didn't have Shut your vile rat vermin mouth.
You had everything to do with it.
A year ago you raised six million from a Turk called Polat and lost the lot on Wall Street.
Yes, but everybody with a portfolio got burned.
Wait, I don't need you to say another word because this is telling me everything that I need to know.
Mr Polat got tired of waiting for his money so he came to you to get it back.
And your parasite brain trying to look after itself came up with a way to sort this little problem.
But you didn't know who you were dealing with.
You're a greedy Scumbag you didn't stop to think and unfortunately, or maybe fortunately for you they got rid of Tony, but it was you that gave them access to Elizabeth's house, and you didn't expect them to pleasure themselves quite in the way that they did with Elizabeth.
I need to use the toilet.
Don't you dare.
Not from either end.
Now you tell me where Elizabeth is.
She's in hospital.
No.
She got kidnapped from outside the hospital and they took her somewhere.
Where did they take her? I don't know.
And her contact? How do you contact Polat? I don't contact Polat.
I don't know anything! The transfer trail leads from Elizabeth's account to a Swiss numbered account.
They wanted the trail to stop there, not to trace it back to Polat, so they got you to pick up the cash, so where were you between the 24th and the 27th? France.
Doing what? Skiing.
Bollocks.
You flew to Geneva on the 24th.
Yes, I did and then went straight to Courchevel and went skiing.
Yeah, but not before you'd withdrawn the cash from the account in Geneva and given it to Polat.
No! Elizabeth was supposed to meet me.
OK? But she didn't turn up.
I waited for her for one day and then came back and went straight to my office.
Why didn't you go straight to the house? Well, because I was trying to be discreet.
Elizabeth was breaking up with Tony.
She was going to tell him that the marriage was over and then come and meet me in Courchevel and go skiing.
She was breaking up with Tony? Yes.
She'd already started divorce proceedings.
What did she know about the Polat deal? Well, she knew about the portfolio.
There were 30 investors involved so she wouldn't have known their names.
It was Elizabeth's idea to buy sub-prime American stock and the sell it on with the other stocks.
It was high risk, high return.
Everyone was doing it.
But then the market crashed.
And you lost everything.
I bought the sub-prime stock from one of Elizabeth's companies before the market collapsed.
And then my company went into administration.
So she still has the six million? Yes.
This is a list of investors in Universal Prospects.
What am I looking for? Investor Number 19.
It's Polat.
You and Knight diverted six million pounds of his money from Universal into your company.
I didn't know.
You don't know the names of the people who invest in your companies? I don't need to know.
What, it makes it easier when you con them out of their money? No-one was conned.
Nothing I did was illegal.
Knight's company was taking the fall for the losses.
Yes, and the stock he bought flat-lined.
Sub-prime stock that he bought from your company? Yes.
And this company, his company, is now bust.
Correct.
Thus, ending the money trail.
But it's not illegal.
Most subsidiaries are safety doors, vessels to carry liability away from the parent company.
It's called liability proofing.
And that makes it OK? Well, if it's not OK, then they should change the law.
Do you have a conscience? Conscience about what? All of those investors chose to gamble on high-risk stock.
And they lost.
I'm not talking about business, we know there's no morality in business.
You'd begun divorce proceedings with Tony.
How did you come by that? Is it true? That is a private, civil proceeding.
So it is true? Yes.
So if I delve into these proceedings, would I find that Tony was contesting the divorce? He didn't know.
So you were going to dump your husband and then go to Switzerland skiing with your boyfriend? Yes.
So you're as ruthless in love as you are in business? Is that really how you like to live your life? Why would you care about that? I'm just trying to figure out how far you'd go to get what you want.
It's my own fault.
No.
I should have taken the shot.
Don't think like that.
Is Boyd angry with me? No.
Did he ask about me? Of course he did.
I let him down.
What? He wanted Spencer to guard Elizabeth and I said Stella, you could've been killed and all you're worrying about is whether you've disappointed Boyd.
Maybe he knew.
Maybe he knew what? That when the time came, I couldn't.
MOBILE PHONE RINGS I'm sorry.
It's Boyd.
See? Hello? Boyd? 'Where the hell are you?' Yes, I'm with Stella.
'Well, I need you back here, all right? Come on.
' HE HANGS UP OK.
Yep.
Yeah, she's doing really well.
Yes, stop worrying about her.
Of course I'll tell her you're thinking about her.
Yeah she's going to be fine.
You see? Is that her? Yeah.
On examining the remains of Tony Muller I noticed that the ligatures on his ankles and wrists didn't leave bruising consistent with ante-mortem or peri-mortem injury.
So he was dead before they roped him up? Yes.
And I've got the entomology on him back from the body farm.
Some of the flies feeding on him were of the outdoor variety.
Right.
This would indicate to me that he was left outside and exposed to the elements.
So they killed him, put him out in the open, then they bring him back into the house and staged the body hanging upside down? Yeah.
I've built a 3-D model of the house to illustrate the DNA sweep that I did.
And I've accounted for Elizabeth's DNA first.
Hers is in blue.
As you can see, it's pretty much all over the house.
Then next up is her husband.
He's in red, equally distributed.
We next have Samuel Knight, in pink, and, interestingly, he's not on the bed, but he is on some of the furniture including the sofa, there.
We now have our offenders.
Offender 1, he's in green.
Offender 2 in yellow, a similar mapping.
And Offender 3, our dead offender, in orange.
That's the six? Yeah.
We've now accounted for all six people who we know to have been on the scene.
OK.
Here is a seventh DNA sample.
A seventh? In purple.
Our body in the lab.
But his DNA is only found in one spot.
Yeah.
The spot where he was hanging? Yeah.
So this isn't Tony Muller? No.
Who is it? Body double.
So there was a switch? Yeah.
So who's this? I dunno.
But whoever he is, he's not Tony Muller.
She does not know you! She has lost her memory! Make her speak! I will make her speak! Make her speak!! There's no need for this! Listen to me.
Let me talk to her.
Speak.
Talk.
Talk! Alone! Just relax a bit.
Make it work.
OK? Listen to me.
I don't know who you are and you don't know me but you are the exact double of my wife and, if they think that you are not my wife, they will kill you.
Do you understand me? You have got to help me! Please! Who are you? You can speak! My name is Tony Muller.
They think that you are my wife.
Who are they? It's too complicated Who are they? They're bad men, very bad men.
They raped Elizabeth, she got away, listen, if you do not help us, they will kill us both! Please! What do I have to do? Just do as I instruct and everything will be OK.
So, you remember? Good.
If you do not do what we say, you will die.
Do you understand? Yes.
When these men took you from your home, did they say where they were taking you? To get the money they said I owed them.
Three million? Yeah.
How were you planning to do that? Stocks, shares, bonds.
Can Michelle do that for you? No.
There's no way she knows which investments to access.
There's more than three million.
So is there anybody else who would know? Only one person.
Tony? Yeah.
He's dead.
So where are we going to get the money from? You know what to do? Yes.
Any time now, right? Then we go.
And me.
I go too, right? Hey.
Mr Polat does not break word.
You go Switzerland.
New name and your money.
OK? OK.
Good morning, Mrs Andrews.
Morning.
Mr Lombart is waiting for you.
If you'd like to come this way.
MOBILE PHONE RINGS She won't be coming back out.
Who are you? Doesn't matter who I am.
All you need to know is, I'm the one that you'll be dealing with from now on.
I want you to give a message to your boss, Mr Polat.
Tell him Elizabeth is a friend of our family now.
He'll understand what I'm talking about.
Tell him I want to make a deal.
His money for Tony Muller.
Call me on this number.
Tell me when and where you want to make the exchange.
Go on, take it.
Now go away.
My dad told me we moved from Ireland when I was little.
They never took you back on holiday? No.
My mother was more English than the English.
She didn't like the Irish.
My dad had a picture of the village where he was born on the wall.
Duncloddy.
She took it down when he died.
So.
So.
Where do we start? I don't know.
I am sorry.
Don't be.
I used to dream about you.
I know.
Oh, how can I choose? Beth, maybe we take both of them? Don't be stupid, Fergus.
How could I cope with two of them? Sorry.
Let the Lord choose.
DOOR SLAMS GIRLS LAUGH 'I saw you that night.
' In Soho.
Yes.
CUSTOMERS CHATTER MUSIC: "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" by Dusty Springfield I want to see you in my office.
Now.
No, stop that.
Please don't! No, please, just get your hands off me! Get off me! What are you doing?! No! Get off me! Have you seen Michelle? She went up there.
What are you doing? Please stop! Please! Stop it! No! Get off me! Get off her! Get off her! No! Leave him alone! Mick! Mick! Michelle! Oh, God! Help me, Father! I think they're dead? Shush, shush.
It's Mick! All right.
Let's have a look.
'The covering-up of the crime was my responsibility.
' I put the sword into Mick's hand and I persuaded Michelle to make a fresh start.
I felt she deserved that much.
What happens now? Was Topal going to rape you? Yes.
Did you feel your life was in danger? Yes.
It seems to me that it's a clear case of self-defence.
I mean, you were a juvenile, you were only 15 years of age.
It won't get to court.
God bless you.
And I'm afraid I can't send you to prison.
That's OK.
MOBILE PHONE RINGS Excuse me.
Excuse me, would you, please? They're ready to make the swap.
They're right here.
It's a wide open space.
Yeah.
It's good for you, isn't it? Yeah, but there's at least two of them and we're a hand short.
You should call in SO19.
No, no, no.
You just get that girl.
Do you think she's up to it? She did OK at the hospital.
Are you in place? 'Ready.
' 'Ready.
' No-one shoots without a "Go" from me.
'Got it.
' 'Understood.
' You got money? I've got something better than money.
What's better than money? Your life.
Detective Superintendent Boyd.
You get your life and a fair trial.
Police? Police.
You're in the cross-hairs.
Take 'em.
GUNFIRE All right? You OK? Yeah, I've got something to do.
Can you clean up for me? Yeah.
Thanks, Kat.
Thanks for your help.
You're welcome, sir.
Thrombosis.
It was very quick.
