Previously on When Calls the Heart
You must have some
idea of your affections
for Constable Grant and my son.
As you suggested, shall we get back to work? In light of the loss of a Mountie's life we are opening another internal inquiry.
Your career as a Mountie is at stake.
You say that you value me as a doctor.
Yes.
I want to be treated like you mean it.
I can only tell you what I told your mother.
Love has to be fought for.
Maybe she needed to be the one to reach out first.
What would you know about it? Sorry.
I must have fallen asleep.
You're up early.
Up late.
I haven't been to bed.
Oh? I was in my office robbing Peter to pay Paul.
I managed to save the oil derrick before it sustained to much damage from the fire.
Well, luckily no one was badly injured.
Thankfully.
A miracle.
I could say you're up early, though.
Uh, a new family is moving into Henry's.
Everyone's bringing pies and casseroles - so I thought I'd bring - Food for the soul.
I better get going if I wanna make it back in time for school.
Allow me.
Thank you.
Here.
What do you think that's about? Bill said the Mounties are looking into the prisoner transport shooting from last fall.
I was under the impression Nathan had been exonerated.
Evidently not entirely.
Hello.
Good morning.
Mr.
Canfield? Oh, yeah.
Joseph.
Oh.
I'm Elizabeth Thornton.
I'm the school teacher of Hope Valley.
- Nice to meet you.
- And you.
I'm told you have two children? I do.
Cooper, he's 10, and Angela who's 14.
Wonderful.
Well, I thought I'd drop off some books for them.
Oh, that's awfully kind of you.
Excuse me.
Angela! Coop! I see you're settling in and making yourself feel at home.
I'm trying.
We just got back with our last load from Jameson.
Joseph? Honey, come meet Mrs.
Thornton.
She's gonna be Coop's new teacher.
Joseph, I love these new steps.
It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs.
Thornton.
Elizabeth.
Winifred.
Most folks call me Minnie.
She brought the children new books.
Wonderful.
When Cooper sits still long enough he loves to read.
And what about Angela? I school Angela myself at home.
Mama? Angela, watch yourself.
Daddy put in some new steps.
Coop, come help your sister.
And come meet Mrs.
Thornton.
She's the school teacher here in Hope Valley.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Last step.
Cooper, all of the children are really looking forward to meeting you, but until then I thought you would enjoy this book.
"The Call of the Wild.
" It's a wonderful adventure.
I like adventures.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
And Angela, I'm not sure if you're familiar with this series of books, Anne of Green Gables? Yes, my mother and father have read two of them to me.
Terrific.
Well, this one's fairly new.
It's called Anne of the Island.
- Thank you.
- Mmm-hmm.
Elizabeth, will you stay and join us for breakfast? I'm afraid school will be starting soon.
Perhaps another time.
Of course.
It was very thoughtful of you to come up to welcome us.
Please do come back again.
I'd like that.
- And Angela, you are welcome at school any - Thank you, Mrs.
Thornton.
Well, I wouldn't want to be late.
If you'll excuse me.
Of course.
- Bye.
- Bye.
- Thank you, Mrs.
Thornton.
- My pleasure.
Susannah! Hey, sis! Oh, Susannah! Rachel! - Hello! - There you are.
I'm sorry we weren't here to meet your train.
You're here now.
That's what counts.
So, how was the trip? That was my first time on a train.
Was it exciting? Absolutely divine, Aunt Rosemary.
We ate in the dining car with real crystal.
Oh, très elegant.
Mais oui.
Oh, tu apprends le français.
Are these all your bags? We're only here for three days.
We are going to have so much fun! Shall we? Judge Avery, can you described the events of October 23rd? Constable Grant and I were on a prisoner transfer to Buxton when we were ambushed by the prisoner's sister.
And then what happened? Constable Grant then approached the prisoner's sister, Jenny O'Rourke.
And then? I looked on with the other Mounties as Constable Grant tried persuading Miss O'Rourke to put down her rifle.
Continue please.
Constable Grant was about to have the situation resolved in a peaceful manner when Constable Novak reached for his own rifle.
That's when the prisoner shouted out alerting Miss O'Rourke.
She then fired, killing Constable Novak.
So you saw Jenny O'Rourke discharge her weapon? No.
Constable Novak reaching for his weapon drew my attention away from Miss O'Rourke.
So you don't know how her rifle came to be discharged.
It could have resulted from Constable Grant's actions.
Thank you, Judge Avery.
Have you seen my stethoscope anywhere? Thank you.
What? Oh.
I guess I'm just a little nervous.
You have no reason to be.
Thank you.
Thank you for believing in me.
I hope that's reciprocal.
It is.
You and I are gonna figure things out.
Carson, right now it feels like we either have to stop working together or stop seeing each other, and I don't like either choice.
How about this Sunday we go for a nice, long ride in the country and we talk? I'll pack a picnic.
I better be going.
I am so excited for you, getting to do such a modern surgery.
I know.
Doctor Rizzoli is a pioneer and I am honoured just to be asked to assist him.
I wish I could see for myself.
Well, why don't you come along? We could ask Molly to cancel the appointments today.
No, Carson, we can't do that to our patients.
But I am tempted.
Mostly to spend time with you.
Oh, my goodness! I'm so sorry.
No, Molly.
Wait, wait.
Don't go away.
I was actually just leaving.
See you later, tomorrow.
Well, it looks like you two are working things out.
Honestly, Molly, it seems to change minute to minute.
Faith, if you have a moment I need some advice.
Right over there.
It sure is a lot of fuss over a barber shop.
Jesse.
I'm in the dog house for riding Lee's motorcycle out to Albert Falls.
Uh, Fiona, how's this? Perfect.
Thanks.
Thank you.
Don't I even get a kiss? You're kidding.
I love you.
- Clara.
- I know, buying Lee's motorcycle without talking to me isn't funny, so I shouldn't be laughing.
But Well, he's learning his lesson.
Mmm-hmm.
Well, here we are, Rachel.
Welcome to Hope Valley.
It must seems so small and quiet compared to the City of Bellingham.
I think it's romantic.
Like something out of the wild west with cowboys and gunslingers.
We're a little short on gunslingers.
A little short on cowboys too, actually.
That's all right.
Oh, that's Jesse Flynn.
He works for Uncle Lee.
Mmm-hmm.
Eyes forward, please.
All right, everyone.
Time for recess.
Yay! Allie? Don't you want to go outside? I'm not in the mood.
What is it? I'm worried about my uncle.
Oh, Allie.
Your uncle is one of the finest Mounties I've ever known.
It's hard to imagine his conduct would be found to be anything but impeccable.
That means he's a very good man and he did everything right.
People said Uncle Nathan did everything right the last time.
The last time? When he got in so much trouble up at Fort Clay? When were you at Fort Clay? Three years ago.
Uncle Nathan got suspended.
After that he asked for a transfer.
That's how we wound up in Fort Simpson before coming here.
Allie, do you know why your uncle got suspended? All I know is that he was a lot more fun before it happened.
Why don't you run outside and play? All right.
That could help consolidate transportation costs.
You'll save yourself a lot of money in the long run, I'm sure.
- That sounds good.
- Great.
I see you two have met.
May I borrow you for a moment? Oh, of course.
Thank you again.
Think nothing of it.
Sorry.
I just wanted to make sure that you and your wife know that Angela is equally as welcome in my classroom as Cooper.
Oh, we know that.
We do.
And I know I'm not qualified to teach a blind student yet, but I do intend to learn as soon as the school year is over.
I appreciate that.
I was sort of hoping Minnie might be willing to help me.
Well, Minnie's very protective of Angela.
I understand.
I'm not sure that you do and I wouldn't expect you to.
Minnie would prefer to keep schooling Angela at home, herself.
But I will be by with Cooper in the morning.
You be ready for my son, now.
I promise you, that boy can wear you out.
I'll see you soon.
Take care.
Constable Grant, what is the first objective in any given conflict? The protection and preservation of life.
And yet Constable Novak lost his life during the conflict in question.
Yeah.
I think that's been established.
This isn't the first time you've acted rashly, is that correct? Objection! Judge Avery, you know that this is not a court of law.
I caution you against trying to represent Constable Grant as his attorney.
Well, then I'd like to ask that the Superintendent's questions be limited to the scope of the incident in question.
Superintendent.
Constable Grant, were you ever stationed at Fort Clay? Yes, I was stationed at Fort Clay under your direct command, sir.
And under my command there was an incident Objection! Bill! If you continue I'm gonna ask you to leave the room.
My office.
And I'll ask again that the superintendent's questions be limited to the scope of the incident in question! May I suggest a short recess? That's a good idea.
We're in recess until further notice.
Thank you for inviting me, although it does seem early to eat.
Susannah likes to eat early.
She thinks it aids in her digestion.
I had nearly forgotten how inflexible she can be.
Ugh, and joyless.
And strict.
She is constantly raining on Rachel's parade.
All right, since I'm already being somewhat fault-finding Somewhat.
Elizabeth, I'm sorry.
You are quite sullen.
Is it Nathan's inquiry? That and something Allie told me.
Nathan once received a suspension- Nathan Grant? No, she must be mistaken.
While he was stationed at Fort Clay three years ago.
When Jack was there? Mmm-hmm.
Why wouldn't Nathan tell me? He knows Jack died at Fort Clay.
Perhaps he thought the reminder would be too painful.
Still, I can't help but wonder if there isn't something else he hasn't told me.
Hey, slowpokes! Come on, let's go.
It was Hargraves' first command.
He assigned me to track some cattle rustlers.
I was to locate them and then report back.
When I saw them headed for the border I moved in on my own.
You disobeyed orders.
I Yeah.
Hargraves had me officially reprimanded.
Never mind that I actually made those arrests, though, myself.
You disobeyed orders.
Still, it doesn't sound like the Andrew Hargraves I've known.
What, before he was promoted? He wants your badge, you know.
He can have it.
Well, talking like that doesn't do any good.
You must know that Fort Clay was Jack Thornton's last assignment.
I don't suppose you and he ever met.
No, I never had the honour.
Any chance you told Elizabeth you were at Fort Clay? No.
I haven't.
Well, we reconvene early tomorrow.
My suggestion is you get some sleep and be ready to come out swinging.
And this time take my advice.
Well, thank you, Lucas, for squeezing us in.
I appreciate that.
The place is empty, Lee.
Nobody eats this early.
Tell me about it.
Thank you.
Pardonne moi.
Do not encourage them to order the tenderloin with mushroom sauce.
It is off the menu.
It's one of our most popular items.
The mushrooms, there are no more.
I ordered them on Monday.
I beg to differ.
Gustav, that's my fault.
You have been spending a lot of time worrying about your oil business.
When a man tries wearing two hats one is only sure to fall off.
Tenderloin with mushroom sauce.
Oh my, doesn't that sound delish? Proper English please, Rachel.
There's a teacher present.
Oh, language is a living thing.
But the tenderloin is delish.
Yeah, Rosemary and I get the tenderloin all the time and it is delish ious.
Very, very delicious.
But no more delicious than some of our other items.
Why don't I give you some time to look over the menu? Thank you, Lucas.
So, Rachel, now that you've graduated high school what are your plans? Well, my mother and father want me to work in the furniture store, but Aunt Rosemary's stories about Broadway have me thinking about About how any other path would be much more interesting.
The stage is it's old hat.
Yeah.
Movies are what actually get all the attention nowadays.
Well, perhaps I should consider going to Hollywood.
No, uh, no.
No, no.
I have heard terrible stories about Hollywood.
- Just terrible.
- Terrible.
- Awful.
- Awful.
But you said Hollywood was the most glamorous place you had ever seen.
When did you tell her that? When she and Uncle Lee visited last.
I must have missed that conversation.
How are we doing? Jesse, you have to try this.
You didn't want ice cream? Ah, I'd only spoil my dinner.
I forgot my wallet at home.
I didn't wanna ask you for money.
Jesse, I just want us to talk it over before we make a purchase.
Even an ice cream cone? Of course not, loopy.
We'll just have to share while we tighten our belts for a while.
But Lee was nice enough not to hold me to the deal.
We still had to pay for the repairs that got you back from Albert Falls.
Mmm.
I guess I could get used to this.
Mmm, it is pretty good.
Are you ok? Are you gonna have to go to jail? - Why would you say that? - Just tell me the truth.
Allie, I'm not gonna have to go to jail.
Whatever happens in there, I'm always gonna be there for you, ok? I promise.
Don't you dare.
Not unless you wanna risk wearing this thing again.
I was just taking it to the mill.
The mill is that way.
Right.
But I I was gonna go the long way through town because I know you hate having this thing around.
I don't use the word "hate", but yes, you are right.
I would like to be rid of that thing.
Great.
Tell my sister that I'm gonna push it to the mill, ok? No, not right now.
She wants to spend the day with you.
I know.
But she wants something.
I can feel it.
Perhaps when you are alone you can ask her why she is so stringent with Rachel.
Tread carefully, Rosie.
I love my sister, but I know from experience that there is a lot more peace and harmony when she gets her way.
She is our niece.
Isn't it our responsibility to help her thrive? - No.
- Wha No.
It's not.
All right, fine.
At least I get to enjoy some girl time alone with Rachel today at the dress shop.
Have we kept you waiting? - Uh, no.
- No, not at all.
Ready to sell some dresses? - Mmm-hmm.
- All right.
Oh, ow.
Oh, I'm so excited.
Goodbye, mother.
Lee, you do think she'll be all right with Rosemary, don't you? Before we get started I would like you all to meet a brand new classmate.
This is Cooper Canfield.
Cooper and his sister, Angela, just moved here to Hope Valley.
Cooper, would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself? My name's Cooper, but you can call me Coop.
My dad's a mechanic and a driver.
My mom, she can do just about anything.
My sister Angela plays the piano like an angel.
Joseph.
Let's go before he sees you.
Do you wanna have a look? I wanna get home.
There's still a lot of unpacking to do.
Cooper's telling them about me.
He's saying he likes the way I play the piano.
Come on, we have your studies.
We have a step here, now.
Step.
Mrs.
Thornton seems very nice.
Don't start with me, Joseph.
Last step.
She does seem nice, Mama.
I hear you.
Joseph, you need to find someone to help you with that piano to lift it off the wagon.
You don't want it to get rained on.
Can we talk about this? Baby, what's to say that hasn't been said already? I'd really like to spend time with children my age, mama.
You know, life isn't always about what we want.
Sometimes it's about what's best.
What we need.
She needs to have another chance to meet children her own age.
So she can be treated like before? I wouldn't have wanted us to move here if I didn't believe that Hope Valley was gonna be different.
Please? I'll think about it.
Thank you, mama.
I said I'll think about it.
Thank you.
Is it possible that you escalated the situation which resulted in Constable Novak's death? I suppose anything's possible.
And if you had complied with the demands of the woman holding you at gun point, if you had released her brother, what might have happened? We might have tracked them down later.
And no one else would have been killed! Or, if released, the prisoner and his sister might have killed us all.
This darn thing.
It's not an objection.
Just you had to all be looking my way, so continue.
Minnie.
How do you like your new door? It's beautiful.
I'll build you some shelves, too.
That would be lovely.
It already feels like home, doesn't it? I really hope things will be different here.
You know I do.
I know.
- Angela? - Woah, woah, woah.
Let her be.
She's all right.
Your hair with this colour is divine.
It's never been my favourite.
If I might, I agree with Rosemary.
It's what all the girls are wearing in the fashion magazines.
Well, I can hardly be referred to as a girl, but thank you, Rachel.
I believe what she meant is that the design is very youthful.
Oh.
It accentuates the elegant line of your neck beautifully.
Oh.
I just I can't decide.
If I may.
I know exactly what it needs.
Oh.
Oh, that's lovely.
Oh.
Goodness.
Rachel, that quite literally pulls the entire ensemble together.
And it sets off your eyes.
Oh.
In confidence, it's someone else's eye I'm trying to catch.
- Oh.
- And you will, Molly.
You asked for my advice.
Oh You're right.
I'll take it.
Oh, wonderful! - I'll write it up.
- Great.
Thank you.
Molly.
You look stunning.
Oh, thank you.
Rachel, you know, if you're going to work in ladies fashion you really should dress the part.
I've been begging mother for something more modern.
Why don't you look around the shop, try something on? Really? Yeah, absolutely.
Anything you like.
I appreciate the ride, Jesse.
Yeah, of course.
I was coming out here anyway to help Joseph move his piano.
Does school get out early every day? Not even most days.
That's a crying shame.
Woah.
Do you hear that? That's just Angela.
It's beautiful.
- Hi, Mama.
- Hi, baby.
Come on.
You saw her up on that wagon.
Playing so beautifully.
It's how Angela climbed up there to get to that piano and how Joseph was content just to watch her.
He and I feel very differently when it comes to how to raise her.
Doesn't her desire to play tell you something about how eager she is to learn? Isn't that what's important? What's important is that Angela is where she's encouraged and safe, and that's here with me, Elizabeth.
I only want to help.
I appreciate that.
I do.
But trust me when I say you don't understand.
I've known cruelty, but I never knew how cruel people could be until we had Angela.
That kind of thing won't happen in my classroom.
I won't allow it.
And if you can find your way to trust me I promise you I will never stop trying to understand how difficult this must be for Angela.
For you.
I will never stop trying to help.
It's nice to be home.
After a long day spent hearing about first growth pines? It was interesting.
Uh-huh, sure.
Rosie, Rach, we're back! I wonder where they could be.
Bum-ba-da-da! Presenting Miss Rachel Thom! Oh-ho-ho! Wow.
Don't you adore these? They were hanging in the dress shop window and Aunt Rosemary said I could try on anything in the store.
Where is your dress? Oh, it's right here.
- Go upstairs and change.
- Susannah.
And wash your face.
I I thought I looked good.
Your daughter is a natural when it comes to working in women's fashion.
- Her sense of style - Rachel is going to work in our store.
Sus, I know you're upset but you cannot talk to Rosemary like that.
- Lee, it's all right.
- No, it's not all right.
- Of course, take her side.
- Nobody needs to take anybody's side.
She's my wife.
And I am your sister! Excuse me.
I'm going to go for a walk.
That's it? You end a good man's career with the stroke of a pen? I think you know me better than that.
I'm not sure I do.
Not anymore.
I'm aware of what happened at Fort Clay.
Now, be honest.
This is personal.
This inquiry is about learning to do our jobs better, and it is clear that Constable Grant himself questions his actions.
That's because Nathan's the kind of man who always wonders whether he might have done better.
I am willing to bet that Grant didn't present you - with the full story about Fort Clay.
- Perhaps.
But one thing that needs no further explanation is that this is about bad blood.
Do the right thing.
Good evening, Bill.
Molly.
Ned.
Excuse me.
You look beautiful.
He didn't give me a second look.
Will you still join us for dinner? Of course.
I'm hungry and I do look beautiful.
Besides, when it comes to Bill I realize now it's all about the long game.
I apologize for getting upset with you.
What I said was uncalled for.
You're right.
It was.
Would you forgive me? Of course I forgive you.
But I just Rosemary, I'm sorry.
I'm very sorry for how I spoke to you.
Thank you, Susannah.
Would you sit? There's something I'd like to ask.
I knew it.
- Lee? - Hmm? Nothing.
You see how different we are, Rachel and I.
Goodness, Rachel is more like Rosemary than she is like me, don't you think, Lee? - Uh - You have such a wonderful life here.
In Bellingham with the factories and canneries and well, it's become no place to raise a child, and while I understand Rachel isn't a child anymore, she still needs guidance.
Fostering.
Fostering? Well, not fostering per say, but - May Rachel come live with you? - Wha ? - Yes.
- Huh? We'd be delighted.
You don't think I'm being a terrible mother? Rachel is trying to spread her wings, Susannah.
Don't you remember what that first sense of freedom and adventure felt like? No.
Well, when you were her age you were at home taking care of our dad, so Of course.
If this is something Rachel would like to do then we would, too.
Right? Um yes.
Uh, we'd be delighted.
Allie? Allie? Allie! She didn't want me to tell you.
Tell me what? She's going to see her uncle.
I guess that means you want me to be in charge.
Yes, I'll be back as soon as I can.
Always the best choice for the job.
Allie, it's time for school.
I'm sorry, Mrs.
Thornton.
I'd like you to listen to me.
My uncle needs me.
I'm not gonna let him fight them all by himself.
Before we hear the superintendent's recommendation, Constable Grant, is there anything you would like to say? I took a risk during the prisoner transfer in which Constable Novak regrettably lost his life.
However, it was a risk I deemed necessary at the time.
Having not done so I believe would have caused other lives to be lost.
I am saddened for Mrs.
Novak as well as the other brave women who have lost good men in the line of duty.
While I can't bring these men back, I can honour them, their wives and their family by continuing to serve in an honourable fashion.
Thank you.
We will now hear the superintendent's recommendation.
Uncle Nathan! - Allie! - Little girl.
My uncle didn't do anything wrong.
You have to stop what you're doing.
You don't understand.
You don't.
My uncle is one of the finest Mounties.
He's honest and brave and and impeccable.
Just ask Mrs.
Thornton.
My uncle is more like my father, and he's all I have.
Please.
Come on.
Superintendent Hargraves? I would like to Gentlemen, it is my recommendation to this council that no further action be taken in this matter.
So say we all? So say we all.
This matter is concluded.
When you came home from the dress shop the other day, I I hadn't seen you smile like that since you were a little girl.
I'm sorry I haven't been able to give you that kind of happiness.
Oh, mother.
I'm going to miss you.
I'm gonna miss you, too.
Everything's gonna be just fine.
Oh, yeah.
What could possibly go wrong? - All right.
- Bye Susannah.
Hello.
- Oh, my gosh, you're early! - I caught a stage.
I'm so glad to see you.
Me too.
Did you really miss me? Last night felt like another year.
I brought you something.
It's not the most romantic of gifts but Carson, you could not have gotten me a more romantic or better gift.
Something happening at the infirmary? Carson just got back.
Ah.
You need your own office.
Or a revolving door.
Oh, you know, I have to say again last night oh, you looked just beautiful.
- Oh I did, didn't I? - Mmm-hmm.
Thank you.
Molly, Florence.
- Hello.
- Hello.
Molly, that was some dress.
$23 well spent.
I was just coming to see you! Jinx, buy me a soda! My new curtains? - You like them? - Oh, I adore them.
- You made them so fast.
- Ah, business has been quiet.
Hmm.
Gee, that's too bad.
Especially since Jesse and I have been dreaming about building a house someday.
I need to work.
Listen, I've been wanting to go home to see my family and if I don't have to close down the shop while I'm gone I could make it worth both our while.
What'd you have in mind? Hmm Have you ever cut Jesse's hair? I have.
I thought I'd take my own advice and be the first to reach out.
Serendipitous.
I was just trying to find you.
I want to apologize for not being more forthright.
In trying to honour your mother's wishes I hurt you and I never meant to do that.
Thank you.
That doesn't give me any right to have spoken to you the way that I did, and I I should not have questioned or doubted what you know about love.
I'm sorry.
I don't know whether you want anything to do with me but I thought you should know I told Nathan that I can't give him what he wants.
That I won't be seeing him anymore.
What could that mean for us? I guess we'll just have to see.
Lucas! Did you order the mushrooms? Sorry, Gustav.
What? The mushrooms.
I'll go to the mercantile.
Ned might have some.
Excuse me.
Dois-je tout faire ? I knew they'd reach the right decision.
And I'm thankful.
Well, you had more confidence than I did.
Nathan, why didn't you mention to me that you were stationed at Fort Clay? Allie told me.
I meant to.
So much time passed I didn't know how.
Did you ever meet Jack? No.
I thought you might like to take a brisk morning ride, with me.
- Dottie's selling the dress shop.
- Oh.
Does this mean I'm going to have to leave and go back to Bellingham? She's lived such a sheltered life until now.
Isn't Rachel with you? I thought she was with you.
Would you care to join me for dinner tomorrow night? Tonight should be about us.
I got your note.
What's what the matter?
As you suggested, shall we get back to work? In light of the loss of a Mountie's life we are opening another internal inquiry.
Your career as a Mountie is at stake.
You say that you value me as a doctor.
Yes.
I want to be treated like you mean it.
