Ice Road Truckers (2007) s08e05 Episode Script

The Storm Troopers

Now, on Ice Road Truckers Whiteout, blizzards, snowstorms, of fresh snow.
Buckle up Hold on, this one might hurt.
Ahh! Hold on tight We're gonna put 'er to the test.
Beam me up, Scotty, for fuck's sake.
Because the fight on the winter road's I don't see anything getting any better.
gettin' personal.
You're in or you're out.
Weather conditions, wind gusting to 60 kilometres per hour, blowing snow, giving poor visibility.
It's been called the storm of the century The polar vortex, a cyclone of frigid air from the North Pole has descended south creating a brutal cold front that's pummelled the winter roads.
And on the remote trail out of Red Sucker Lake the deep snow's halted Alex Debogorski's run.
For days They want us to go out there and repo the trailer for them.
Fuck it, eh, let's do 'er.
The veteran's been on a mission for VP, trying to deliver a repo-ed Polar trailer, and nab a big reward.
What's this? But the trip's been a series of setbacks and now, with temperatures falling, and fuel supply dwindling, his journey may have come to a sudden end.
- Can you pull me straight? - Yeah.
Oh great, thanks.
If it's a problem, I'll give 'er a shot.
I've got that thing chewed up so bad.
I'm gonna have to hit her right on that right hand side.
Alex is back on track.
Come on, baby.
But with an empty trailer giving him virtually no traction, it'll be a rough 570 miles back to Winnipeg.
Even with all the chains on, I don't have enough traction because I have no weight on the back of the truck.
Even if I had my wife sitting up there in a rocking chair, it'd give me more traction.
As daylight comes the storm's still got plenty of life.
It's snowin' and blowin' like a son of a bitch again.
We're headin' for Winnipeg.
And Art Burke's stuck in the thick of it.
After delivering his load of construction supplies to Ontario's Deer Lake I don't know how long I'm gonna be here, I might be here all fucking day.
The Polar driver was stranded for over 24 hours.
Startin' to crack the fuck up.
Now, he's finally on his way back to Winnipeg Holy fuck! But with a white out blanketing the upcoming ice crossing Once we get out in there, I lose track of the fucking land, it's not gonna be good, eh.
his trip's not getting any easier.
We're not gonna see a fucking thing.
Now we're going down on the lake.
Now we're in that whiteout I was talking about.
Fuck, man, I can't see a fucking thing.
Because I can't see shit.
It's nothing, there's just nothing.
To see another day I need to relax, eh.
Hope for the best.
I can see the side of the bank right there, and fuck all through anything else.
With the edge of the lake providing the only visible path We're gonna ride the bank all the way across this fucking lake, hopefully.
Art heads for the bank.
Where am I? The bank is right fucking there, look.
But it's a risky trail to follow.
If I get into that, she's over.
Crossing's are usually in the centre of the lake where ice forms at its thickest.
On the edges, the ice is dangerously thin, and might not be able to support the weight of the big rig.
There we go, boy, how does that look? The bank is right there.
This is fucking crazy.
There's not a lot of room for fucking errors here, right.
Beam me up, Scotty, for fuck's sake.
Oh, well boy, life goes on, eh.
The gamble pays off.
Elvis has left the ice.
We fucking did a stunt back there, you know that, eh.
Like we came very fucking close.
And he hammers down for the last 400 miles to Winnipeg.
But Art's not the only Polar driver in the heart of the storm.
The wheel's ain't turnin', they ain't earnin', that's the way it is.
Todd Dewey is fighting to get back to Winnipeg after delivering to Muskrat Dam the night before.
Tell you what, buddy, we're ploughing through fresh snow up here.
These huge blizzard-ass snowstorms we've been going through, have been just outrageous.
I mean, whiteout, blizzards, snowstorms, of fresh snow.
Todd's trying to grab another load at headquarters and get back out as fast as he can.
And I'm super stoked, ready to get hooked up, and get right back on the ice road and make another big paycheque.
That's what it's about.
But an ice crossing piled high with over 4-feet of snow Whoa.
could derail his plan.
Do you see how much snow is piled on top of this freakin' lake? The wind's blowing all night, they haven't ploughed the road, so it's just great big snow drifts.
While you've got no weight on, you can't get no traction going through there.
Deep snow drifts and a light load can be a deadly combination, as proper traction is nearly impossible.
Looks scary, look at that.
I can't see where the drifts are and where they're not.
Whoa.
There's drifts all over, this is just ridiculous.
I'm trying to keep my momentum going just to get through here.
I just don't want to get stuck on the ice.
Oh no! Come on, don't get stuck.
But a halfway through Come on, let's roll! Todd's worst case scenario comes to life.
Son of a bitch! Let's not get stuck! I'm fucking stuck.
On the fucking ice.
I'm stuck on the fucking ice.
On a crossing piled with over 4-feet of snow Son of a bitch! Let's not get stuck! Todd Dewey's trapped in an ice road trucker's nightmare.
I'm fucking stuck.
On the fucking ice.
I'm stuck on the fucking ice.
This is a bad situation, this is not good.
I got into a huge snow bank is what the problem is.
Now, he's in a race against the clock I'm nervous, I'm sitting on the ice, stuck.
The longer the truck sits, the more it pressures the fragile ice.
I can't get through this shit without fucking chains.
I don't even know if I can get through it with chains.
Todd's plan? Put on chains and try to claw his way to freedom.
I don't know if it's gonna work, or not.
The snow is really deep right here, this drift.
Agh! Can't believe I got 'em on.
All right, boys, let's start moving, get me the fuck off this ice.
As Todd rocks the truck, the shifting weight could cause the ice to shatter at any moment.
Keep going, don't stop.
All this damn snow! Damn it! Go! Oh yeah! Todd's rolling I just don't wanna get stuck on the ice again.
I wanna get off of this ice.
but one wrong move, and he'll be right back where he started.
Come on, don't get stuck.
We need to get off the ice.
Whoo-hoo! Dude, what a sigh of relief! Oh, we're on shore, that's a big plus right there.
That makes me feel a hell of a lot better, boys.
While one Polar driver motors away from Muskrat Dam I'm going to Muskrat Dam with a load of building supplies.
team-mate Lisa Kelly's heading towards the remote town.
It's really important that I get these loads there.
Mark's counting on me to pull through.
Over 700 miles from Winnipeg, Muskrat Dam is one of the farthest destinations in Polar's push into Ontario.
Ooh, I see the lake.
It's a brand new one that's cracked and open today, and I'm the first one to it.
I'm gonna stop here before I go down on it.
This is a really big lake.
Get out here and check this lake out.
The crossing took a beating from the blizzard, and it's just reopened.
Now, Lisa'll be the first to test it.
The wind blew a bunch of snow on the lake, and so much snow got on it that it cracked it, and the water came up through, and made a mess out of it, made it impassable.
The wind's still blowing, and there's still a lot of snow on it, I mean, it's pretty deep looking snow.
I'm curious to know if I'll see the spot that was broken.
I mean okay, maybe I'm a little nervous because I'm the first one on a lake that just reopened, but it's the butterflies that make life fun.
Lisa forges ahead with the 30 tonne load.
I'm gonna take it really slow on this lake, though.
This definitely looks like the overflow.
And it's making a lot of noise right here.
Yup, that's where it cracked.
You can see the water on top of the ice and the snow.
It's frozen now, but Makes you wonder how ice heals, does it heal stronger, or does it heal weaker? I hope it heals stronger.
Ice is cracking Okay, I wanna get off this lake, right now.
Oh, made it.
All right, I'm on the other side of the lake, the new lake, the new route.
The crossing's behind her, but she's still got 100 miles to the distant Ontario village.
While one Polar driver guns ahead I'm gonna go down and have a talk with Mark.
another is looking for a shoot-out.
I got three loads in a month.
Everybody else is getting flip loads, getting more loads than I am.
I had this same problem last year.
I'm not gonna deal with it.
Come on.
Darrell Ward's season has been filled with misfires Well, what the fuck.
And after his truck was stuck in the shop I've only made two runs since I've been here.
the Montana Legend took it up with the boss.
I want as many loads as I can get, that's why I'm here, you know.
I apologize if it's not up to your standard.
It's been going on since day one, since I got here.
Now, he's reached his boiling point.
Something's gotta change, I'm not gonna deal with this any longer.
- Hello, Darrell.
- Got a minute, Mark? Come on in.
What's up today? I've been here for a month I've gotten three loads.
We're a team here, we work together.
I understand that we're a team here, but I come up here to haul these loads and get as many loads as I can.
This isn't all about you.
It is to me.
It's about my livelihood, and about my future and my family.
You know, Darrell, he's got that element in him, if things aren't going his way, he's got that selfishness in him, you know what I mean.
He-he's not that team player.
I'm up here to run these three months that these ice roads are open, and get as many loads as I can.
Yes, it is about me.
You know what, I'm not gonna sit here and bitch and complain with you all afternoon about this stuff, okay? I feel the same way.
I've been up since four in the morning, trying to get guys home properly with this massive snowstorm we've had.
I got loads to get out.
You know, I'm just not in the mood for this crap.
So like I said, at the end of the day, you've gotta figure out what you wanna do.
Either you're gonna stick with the team, I've got the loads for you.
I haven't got the loads.
I don't see anything getting any better.
Well, you know what, Darrell, you've got to make a decision whether you're part of this team or not because this is just getting ridiculous.
We went through this crap last year with you, you know, complaining, this and that.
I don't wanna lose you as a driver, but the thing is, you're in or you're out.
Same as last year and stick to it.
At Polar headquarters I'm up here to run these three months that these ice roads are open and get as many loads as I can.
Boss Mark Kohaykewych and driver Darrell Ward are locked in a showdown.
I don't see anything getting any better.
Well, you know, what Darrell, you've got to make a decision whether you're part of this team or not, because this is just getting ridiculous.
I don't wanna lose you as a driver, but the thing is, you're in or you're out.
Same as last year and stick to it.
I don't need to be sitting here getting three loads a month.
Okay, are you done? Are you done? While you're doing whatever and you're saying it's not about me, I'm telling you it is about me, and I'm going to do whatever I need to do to take care of it.
Okay, you're done.
The door's right there.
Right on, I'm out the door.
All right, out.
That's fine, I don't need this anymore, either.
Okay.
See ya later, see ya.
I'm outta here, I'm gone.
I'm goin'.
I'm gonna go find something else.
I don't need to be dealing with this shit.
Without the Montana Legend Shit.
Fuck it.
Polar's lead over VP Express could be slipping away.
You know, we lost a top driver.
To be down a truck you know, what can I say you know what I mean, it's uh, it's frustrating.
It's extremely frustrating.
Um, you know when we got a short season here to move loads, it's not good.
While one Polar driver's flown the coop another's finally on his way home.
All right, we're at the end of the main ice road part here.
We made it here in one piece.
Art Burke closes in on Winnipeg after three hard days on the road.
Art's trip to Deer Lake has been plagued with problem Fuck! after problem Oh my God, we just tore the bumper off his fucking truck.
Now we're in that whiteout I was talking about.
as the storm nearly shut him down for good.
Beam me up, Scotty, for fuck's sake.
I haven't had a perfect fucking trip since it started.
Every fucking trip that I made so far, something fucked up.
Now I go out, we'll drop this empty trailer, pick up another full one, and do the same fucking thing again.
Now he's creeping toward the finish line.
With the last inspection to pass, 100 miles from Polar headquarters.
I'll be back.
Drivers are required to log their trip and driving hours.
Now I've gotta take this fucking shit in there and show it all to him.
That's gonna go over fucking big, now.
So paperwork must be in order at all times.
I hope everything is all right, but I wouldn't be a bit fucking surprised if it ain't.
Holy fucking shit.
Motherfuckers! Fuck! Fuck! I just got a $490 fucking fine.
Fuck, man! It never fucking ends.
So that performance cost me I might as well say, out of my pocket today.
And to make life even more better, they shut me down for three fucking days.
So now, we gotta get someone to come and fucking get me.
Not me, get the truck, because I can't drive it away, right? So I'll just sit here, wait for somebody to come and fucking retrieve the truck, and then we'll take up the thing in a couple of days.
Fuck it.
Coming up Hold on, this one might hurt.
Lisa gets rocked.
Ahh! On the road out of Muskrat Dam This road is the bumpiest winter road we've been on all season.
It's-it's very narrow, very bumpy, very rough.
Todd Dewey's fighting his way back to Winnipeg over one of the most torn up trails in Ontario.
Hang on.
Up ahead Fuck.
a trio of stuck big rigs, casualties from the storm stops him in his tracks.
How'd they get stuck in the middle of the road? Son of a gun, it looks bad up there.
Here we go! There's three trucks stuck in the fucking ditch.
Fuck.
The road's in bad shape, it's horrible.
Is there a grater coming up? Fucking horrible.
I can get a little bit of slack and give a couple good fucking jerks, but I'm not going to slide myself down in there, - I'd be stupid.
- No.
To keep moving ahead, Todd will need to tow the tankers out of the way.
Make sure you get that wheel turned out a little bit.
But without any weight on his trailer, it'll be a challenge to move the 36 tonne rig.
Hang on.
This shit's really stuck in there.
It just keeps ploughing the front end in even more and more.
I've given everything she's got, buddy.
- She's toast.
- I know it.
If I had weight, I could continue to pull, but I don't have no fucking weight, it just spins me out.
- Yeah.
- Fuck! I might be able to get around.
Determined to keep moving, Todd will go off road and try to drive around the rigs through the heavy snow.
If I plough a trail, get a lift speed, and just plough right by them.
But worst case scenario, is I'm stuck, and we're all in the sleeper.
But one wrong move and he'll suffer the same fate as the stuck rigs.
All right, I'm just backing up so I can get a run.
10-4.
Here we go! Oh, fuck! This is making me really nervous.
Come on! Get me outta here.
Plough the ditch, motherfucker.
Son of a bitch let's not get stuck! Oh, fucking Lord.
I was nervous, I didn't know if I'd make it.
I mean, why not chance it? Clear from the jackknifed pile, Todd guns for home.
Yeehaw! 80 miles to the south, on the road to Muskrat Dam another Polar driver is still trying to make her delivery.
Yeah, I've gotta say, this is probably one of the bumpiest roads I've ever been on.
I'm trying not to shake everything loose and break everything.
Lisa Kelly's pushing the final 50 miles to her drop-off point, but the fallout from the blizzard has the road in ruins.
The road is so rough.
I keep trying to look in the mirrors to make sure everything is okay, but I can't really take my eyes off the road.
Ahhh! What the fuck! What the hell is that noise? There is definitely something wrong with the truck.
You've gotta be kidding me! Yeah, it's hanging.
Oh, the strap broke.
The shock limiting strap has snapped, leaving her suspension unprotected.
They have this strap on the suspension, that strap is basically just so that my shocks don't like overextend.
One of the biggest hills on the trail only a mile away, couldn't come at a worse time.
I don't know what will happen if you overextend them.
Maybe we'll find out.
All right, let's try this hill.
Anything can happen.
It's broke, so I don't know if maybe if it overextends, if it'll pop an airbag or not.
I hope not, because I don't know how to fix airbags.
That would suck.
Lisa gains speed and tries to mount the hill I don't think I'm gonna make it.
Oh, shit! Coming up I have a low fuel light flashing.
Running on empty I'm not really excited about this.
On the bone shaking trail to Muskrat Dam It's broke, so I don't know if it overextends, if it'll pop an airbag or not.
Lisa Kelly is trying to scale a hill with a busted suspension strap.
Anything can happen.
Good gosh! It's pushing her truck and trailer to the limit.
I hate this road officially right now.
It's such a death trap out here.
I don't think I'm gonna make it.
Oh, shit! Everything is holding.
Lisa conquers the hill and on the other side Yeah, this is Muskrat Dam, wow.
After tackling one of the most feared roads in all of Ontario, Lisa chalks up another load for Team Polar.
It's been a long night, of course, it always is.
I'm gonna get up early, and get this offloaded so I can hustle my bustle back to Winnipeg, and get another load.
So good night.
180 miles to the southwest, on the road from Red Sucker Lake to Winnipeg The fuel gauge is in the red.
Alex Debogorski's trying to bring home a payday for VP I also have a low fuel light flashing.
but he's running on fumes.
I've been running for six, going on seven days now, without fuelling up.
I don't know how far I can go now, but we're gonna put her to the test for a while here, yet.
The veteran desperately needs to reach the nearest town of Ponton, over 20 miles away to fuel up.
I just need enough until I get to the fuel station in Ponton.
If not, it'll be disaster.
What's this? We got an ice road.
Fuck! But now, he'll need his last few drops to get him across the ice.
And now I got a little bit of a problem here.
The worst place to run out of fuel is in the middle of a crossing with a 14 tonne load.
I'm not really excited about this.
Oh, it's a disaster.
I'm on the ice now, the front wheels just went on to the ice.
My fuel's dropped another chunk.
No need to say we're getting a little close to the bottom of the barrel.
We're still moving, that's all that counts.
If this truck runs out of fuel, it's a freaking job.
First of all, it's cold outside, the truck's gonna stop, so we can't heat the engine, can't heat the sleeper.
Not nice in cold weather.
Alex makes it through the crossing We've survived another one.
Now his fuel supply's just gotta last the final 17 miles.
The truck is acting like it's empty.
On the way back to Winnipeg The truck is acting like it's empty.
Alex Debogorski's tank has ran dry.
Ah! That's it.
She's out.
We got no power left now, that's it.
Putting out triangles so that people know that I'm broke down.
With no fuel Alex has no heat in the cab as temperatures continue plummeting.
Can't believe it, I'm out of fuel.
How far from Ponton am I? Guess we'll pull that thing over there.
Do you wanna give it a try? With help from a passing truck, Alex's towed to the nearest fuel station.
How much adventure can a guy have in one trip? You get in this zone where all this stuff starts happening, and you're wondering like, what in the heck's going on here? Unbelievable.
Once in Ponton Well, I'd never believe it if anybody If you told me that I'd never believe you got me here.
Good job! Alex gases up, and hunkers down for the final stretch home.
I think this is a good time to say a prayer.
The Good Lord is having fun with me today.
As dawn breaks back in Winnipeg Come on, Reno, answer.
after his explosive exit from Polar Darrell gives his son, Reno, a call.
What're you doin'? Oh not much.
I just got into it with Mark at Polar.
I've been here for a month and I've got three loads.
Yeah, it doesn't work for me.
So I walked out of there and I'm done.
Yup.
You know, I think Reno and I are a lot alike, and uh, I generally call Reno, see how he's doing, let him know what I'm doing.
I don't know.
I'm either gonna have to come home or find something up Something up here to do.
You know, I'd like to stay up here and run these roads until the season's over, but Yeah.
So I called him on the phone, and told him what happened, and you know, thought about it a little bit.
Like yeah, that makes sense, let's do it.
I'm gonna go drive around and see what's out there.
There's a lot of trucking companies out here, there's a lot of trucks up here.
I'm just gonna go knock on some doors or something, see what I can find.
Yup.
All right.
Yeah, love you, too.
Bye.
You know, if Mark thinks that he's seen the last of me, he's in for a rude awakening.
If you want a job done right, you've gotta do it yourself.
I can make it happen.
Well Mark, brace yourself, because you don't know what's coming at ya.
Next time on Ice Road Truckers It's got big red letters, dangerous, dangerous.
deadly trails You don't have to go fast to die.
and power plays Thanks, for the load, Mark.
rock the winter roads.
Yeehaw! That's what I call truckin'.
