[ANTONI] So her name is Nicole Owens.
She's 53, from Tustin, California,
currently in Las Vegas, Nevada,
which is a great coincidence
'cause we're here too.

- [JONATHAN] Right now!

I'm Nicole Owens. I am a notary public.
And I'm also a delivery
driver for pizza.
The best job I have is being a mom.
I have three kids. And they're
absolutely wonderful. [CHUCKLES]
I hate to sound cliché, but
I love everything about my mom.
I always describe my mom to others
like just a ray of sunshine, you know?
She has always made ends meet,
always put food on the table,
and always taken care of us.
Living with me is my son
Alex and his wife, Shayla,
and my daughter, Karina.
Even though my son Davi doesn't
technically live with me,
I count him because he's away at school.
"Nicole made her children's lives
the opposite of what
her childhood was like."
My mom is very religious, very strict.
And, uh, as I got older,
that wasn't the life for me.
I had my little brief time of
being footloose and fancy-free.
[LAUGHS]
And then I met my ex.
I was only 19.
"So what started as lust
and love with her ex-husband
quickly turned into a terrible marriage
that she stayed in for 30 years."
- [JONATHAN] Oh my God.
- Thirty years.
My dad was never her cheerleader.
I've never had a party to
celebrate me. I've never had that.
I told my ex that I really
wanted a 50th birthday party.
And then he left.
- [EMOTIONAL MUSIC PLAYING]
- So it didn't happen.
"Months before her
milestone 50th birthday,
Nicole's husband ran
to the Philippines."
"Nicole and their children
have never seen him again."
I have always wanted to be
the best mom and the best wife.
And up until two years ago,
I thought my life was going to be
figuring we're gonna grow old together.
[KARINA] I think she wasn't
prepared to be single.
And we just stayed with
her and stuck by her side
because she didn't
ever really have that.
Even though it was good for our
family, it was rough for my mom.
[NICOLE] All my life,
I was told what to do,
where to be, what to wear.
I have put so much of
my effort and energy
into other people. I don't
even know where to start.
I don't even know what I like, really.
I want her to learn who she really is.
All of her kids are getting older.
And eventually we're
all gonna fly the coop.
And I really don't want
her to be stuck here
feeling like she doesn't
have value anymore.
I hate to say it, but time is ticking.
And she's got to
unwrite what was written
and have the confidence
to live every day as Nicole
because she's a boss lady.
They want me to find my way.
[UPLIFTING MUSIC PLAYING]

It's time to let them
go and let them be free.
And so it's also time for me to
figure out how to be free myself.
But I think I'm ready.
There's a lot going on
here. There's so much healing
that needs to happen. We got
our work cut out this week, guys.

If I wasn't already in love

this generosity of spirit.

I was having a really
hard time last year.
And, uh, I needed some
purpose. And I found crochet.
When you're doing
something for somebody else,
you don't have time to
feel sorry for yourself.

But that means it's a
kitchen that has love
and use if it's not the cleanest.
That's a good sign.
I've been working to get rid of a
lot of, um, stuff that is not mine.

[NICOLE] There's still a pile
of his things in the garage.
What are the permits for
starting fires on your front lawn?
If I didn't have an HOA,
it'd all just be out front.
- But I can't

Those HOAs are always spoiling the fun.

- [JEREMIAH] Does the house make you happy?
[NICOLE] For a long time,
it was not my sanctuary.
But I love my house because
my home is me and my kids.
Understood.
So we heard that you were married
for quite some time
and your husband left
uh, your ex-husband
left. A year or two ago?
He left two years ago.
Told me he was going
to LA for a meeting.
And, uh, he texted me,
just this really casual message,
"Just landed in the Philippines."
And I said, "Excuse me? You're where?
What Why are you in the Philippines?"
And then fast-forward a few more months
and I get a Facebook
message from a woman
who wants to know if I know where he is.
- [TAN] Did you know the woman?
- No, never met her.
- Okay.
- And I said, "Who do you think I am?"
And she said, "You're
his sister, right?"
I said, "I'm his wife."
And she said, "Well, I'm his wife."
- [JEREMIAH] No.
- [TAN] Oh my God.
She said, "How long
have you been married?"
And I said, "30 years."
"How long have you been
married?" And she told me eight.
So I've had a lot to work through.
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC PLAYING]

I share a room with four dogs and a cat.

that has 37,000 people
and 5,000 animals in it,
there's surprisingly very little food.

brought these for Nicole,
but then we are trying them?
As purveyors of style, taste, and class,
you always need to bring
a gift to someone's house
when you're coming
there for the first time.
So we've organized to bring
Nicole these gorgeous brionuts,
which are for Nicole to enjoy.

I'm still fighting
because of my former relationship.

I would hear about it.

Um, I grew up in a very
conservative household.
So there's a lot of styles
that I wasn't allowed
to explore, you know?
Uh, I grew up in a
very Muslim household.
I understand modesty better than most.

thing stresses me out.

I saw something that
I'm really curious about.
[NICOLE] Oh.
So because I've been trying
to keep my headspace positive,
every morning, I pick an affirmation.
And the one I picked this
morning was on the counter.
[GASPS] Where is it?
"I embrace new opportunities to
learn and develop new skills."
- [NICOLE] Isn't that so fitting?
- [ANTONI] It's very today.
There's so much that I
wanna talk to you about.
- You have three kids?
- [NICOLE] Yeah.
Do your kids cook?
If anyone's cooking, it's primarily me.
I don't seek help easily.
I wanted nothing more
than to be the type of mom
who made things from scratch, homemade.
[ANTONI] And what was
it like for you as a kid?
[NICOLE] My mom and dad both,
they were divorced for
most of my childhood.
- My mom and dad both are wonderful cooks.
- Okay.
- Nobody's ribs can top my dad's ribs.
- [ANTONI] Dad's ribs.
Yeah. His pancakes, his
Mexican cornbread recipe.
Oh, I love how your face lights
up when you talk about it.

I'm getting quite accustomed

Like, day to day, what's the
food situation in this house?
Well, I'd like to cook more for my mom,
but me getting, you know, hands-on
in the kitchen and everything
is very hard for her.
My mom's a people pleaser.
Before you even had a chance to jump in,
cooking's done, cleaning's
done, kitchen is finished.
Even something little,
I would love to be able
to take care of my mom.
- It's huge.

I love that for her.

So you've been dealing
with a lot of abandonment.

It's a trigger for me.
My mom and I don't have a
relationship, of her choosing.

- That relation
Because I walked away from the religion
that she chooses to be a part of.
I think that's why even though I knew
there was something
wrong in my marriage,
I knew my husband was
lying to me, I held on.
I don't wanna let go of people
because I know what it
feels like to be let go.

- But I'm working on that.

I'm working on setting
boundaries, and I'm working
You also gotta focus on these emotions.
Yeah.
I've been paying attention and
observing. And when you had said
that you were going through
the pain of your husband leaving
and you started crocheting
the plastic bags,
you said, "Well, I started doing this
so that I could avoid
what I was feeling."
And I've heard you say several
times that I moved out of a room
because I'm avoiding what I'm feeling.
And so I love that you're
in a space of doing growth.
But there's a part
of me that's realizing
that you're still
avoiding the main thing.
[NICOLE] Yeah.
Do you think you're ready
to confront that this week?
Depends on what that means.
It means will you trust me to help
you to confront that this week?

I didn't see art on the walls, but
I did see a really amazing drawing.
- Who did that?
- [NICOLE] That's Davi.

- [NICOLE] Yeah. Davi is an amazing artist.
Why is it out here?
[NICOLE] Because Davi doesn't like it.
[JEREMIAH] Beautiful. How long
have you lived in this house?
- Twenty-two years.
- [JEREMIAH] You raised your babies here.
How do you wanna feel when you
walk through the front door?
- I wanna feel at ease, like I can let go.
- Good.
- [NICOLE] You wanna see me skate?
- You rollerblade?
- [NICOLE] Well, those are roller skates.

[NICOLE] But
I didn't realize we had
a roller skating queen.
- [NICOLE] Yes.

[NICOLE] Not as often as I would like.

[TAN] The majority of her 50 years,
someone's told her, "You can't
do that. You can't wear that."
So my mission is to build her up
enough so she will put on the clothes
that will make her feel
the way she wants to feel.
This house is a collection of
choices that she wasn't a part of.
And my heart breaks for her.
So I wanna help her walk into that space
and have a real sense of ownership.
Beauty is about building the confidence
in our relationship with ourselves
to know what we like, to know
how we like to express ourselves.
So my goal for Nicole this week is
to connect Nicole to her inner power
and show her just how incredibly
strong and beautiful she is.
The only way Nicole's gonna
move forward is if she realizes
she needs to unpack this baggage
that she's been holding onto
so that she can get
to the joy in her life.
[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]
Nicole is taking people into her house,
feeding her kids, taking
care of everyone around her
to the best of her abilities.
But it needs to be reciprocated.
I want her to have moments she
feels like she's being taken care of.
That's what she needs.

So not to stress you out,
but we need everything.
What's great about Crate & Barrel
is there is a nice
variety of design styles.
And this is really an exercise today
for Nicole to tell me
what she connects to.
I want her to make
decisions for herself.
I want her to feel empowered.

any real opinions for herself
about what she finds beautiful.

I would be happy with any of those,

I can sense that there is some restraint
in her telling me everything she wants,
which breaks my heart.
But I wanna push her. I wanna push
her outside of her comfort zone
'cause this is an opportunity for her
to live a new, fully realized life.
And I want that for her.

I feel like you've done all
these things in the house,
and you've raised these
magnificent people,
and there's a lot of love
that's come out of there,
but you don't feel fully
connected to it to me.
No. No, I'm not.
I couldn't get fully
connected to something
'cause it might be gone.

of peeling the layers back.

a second person to join us, right?

one of my favorite restaurants
at the Bellagio Resort and Casino.
That's exactly where you should
be 'cause Mom is not cooking today.

In the spirit of trying
to turn the tables a little
and having her kids show up for her,
I think this is a beautiful
opportunity for them
to make their grandfather's dishes.
Something that drums
up positive memories.
And to have Nicole just stand there,
and she can guide them, but hands off.

- My dad's is better than anyone else's.

Your makeup brushes really
want you to clean them.
Take your makeup brush, get
it a little wet in the sink.
Make sure you're holding
your makeup brush facing down
so you don't get water
up into the handle.
Then take your soap,
give it a little spray.
I use the palm of my hand
to make little circles.
It's gonna remove any germs or
grime or pigment from your brush.
Then we're gonna rinse thoroughly.
Squeeze out the excess water.
Then you wanna set your brush
bristles facing down, handle resting up
for it to dry like this.
The cleaner you keep your brushes,
the longer they're gonna last,
the better your skin's gonna look,
and the better your makeup
application will look.
