Face Off (2011) s09e05 Episode Script
The Gatekeepers
It's pretty damn cool, I gotta say.
This is exactly what the challenge was about.
It doesn't work for multiple reasons.
Sorry.
Previously on Face Off Scott's fantastic face brought him his first win, but Brittany lost focus and was sent home.
- Bye, guys.
- Aww.
Now, 12 artist remain and tonight the artists hold the key to their own success.
Before you are six gateways to uncharted dimensions What? Oh, oh, my gosh.
I don't have the fucking time for this shit, man.
- We're in a world of hurt.
- Unbelievable job.
That is so goofy looking.
In the end, only one will win a VIP trip from Kryolan Professional Make-Up to one of their a brand-new 2015 Fiat 500, and $100,000.
This is Face Off! Look at this.
It's a party.
So we walk into the lab and it seems as though we've interrupted McKenzie's therapy session.
What do you think? Does it look comfortable? - Yeah.
- Good.
Because for today's Foundation Challenge you're gonna have to dig deep into your subconscious to create your characters since your only inspiration for this challenge is the classic Rorschach Inkblot.
- Ooh! - Sick! All right, so for those of you who don't know the Rorschach Inkblot, this test is used to analyze personality characteristics and emotional functions based on what you see within the image itself.
Nora, what do you see in this image? In the black I see an owl and in the white, two little mole-rats side by side.
Okay, Ricky, what about you? I see two horned guys head butting each other.
You guys are interesting.
All right, let's talk about your guest judge today.
- Ooh.
- She won an Emmy this year for HBO's The Normal Heart.
On top of that, she's received another for various hit projects like Glee, American Horror Story, and Nip/Tuck.
Please give a warm welcome to Eryn Krueger Mekash.
I idolize this woman.
She is brilliant and everything she touches is so perfect.
Thank you so much for being here today.
Good to see you.
Thank you for having me.
It's so exciting.
It is exciting.
- Hi.
- Hi.
So this is a really unique challenge for these guys because it relies solely on the artist's perception and imagination.
So what advice can you give them? Oh, my gosh.
Creativity and originality.
That's always the best way to come up with incredible make ups, but really look at the shapes and the shadows in your Rorschach test and incorporate all of those into a really creative makeup.
All right, guys, the winner of this Foundation Challenge will earn immunity and cannot be eliminated this week.
You have two hours for this challenge.
On my go, run to work station and swipe the screen of the tablet which will reveal your inkblot.
- Ready? - Yeah! Go! - Jasmine.
Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- Good luck.
- Okay, let's see.
It's demonic.
It's definitely demonic.
I see some heavy eyes.
I see some heavy brows.
I see some horns, but I don't think of a scary character.
I think of an Ancient Greek demigod.
I'm putting this down on your nose here.
So I look at my inkblot and the first thing I see is this massive, stocky character.
So I want to create a zombie knight.
I'm thinking grayscale 'cause there's no color in an inkblot.
I'm having a lot of fun with this challenge.
Let's see if just the brown will work before I go to the greenish black.
I see elements of Dracula's crest in the inkblot.
It's gonna be a classic take on a vampire, but with a post-apocalyptic flair.
When I looked at my inkblot I saw the sides actually came out like a mermaid's tale, so I figured, "Hey, dirty river mermaid.
" So I start ripping apart a sea sponge to make a very organic crown piece.
This is Artex.
This is a Kryolan product.
You can use it to make lots of awesome textures.
Ah.
So I'm actually going to texture out as if this is growing out of your head.
Go ahead, Meg.
My inkblot-- the first thing I noticed was a crown, horns, and cheekbones.
I'm trying to make little pops of color to bring out this feminine, strong being.
You got five minutes left! Time's up! Brushes down! Nice work, guys.
Boom.
- Hi, Stevie.
- Hi.
Let's see your inkblot.
I saw a demonic creature that is a fighter for the underworld.
I really like where you placed the horns on his ears.
It's very clever and I like the blood, of course.
- I'm a big fan of gore.
- Who isn't? - I think it looks terrific.
- Thank you.
I decided to do this undead Samurai demon.
- I like the Darth Maul feel.
- Yeah.
I also like the little shapes that you've done here.
- It looks great.
- Thank you.
I'm drawn right to the center where it looks - like demonic eyes - Oh, yeah.
And then this silhouette carried me into the horn idea.
I like the way that the gold is tied into the rest of the costume and I also like that your shapes really followed your Rorschach test.
- Thank you.
- Nice job.
I ended up seeing, like, a kinda majestic, but dirty around the edges river mermaid.
I think you did a beautiful job.
I really like that you used an organic piece and I really like that your arms are darker.
- It looks terrific.
- Thank you so much.
- Hi.
Good to see you again.
- How you doing? Looking around the lab, everyone really brought something completely different out.
Honestly, I'm so impressed by the quality of makeup that was turned out in two hours.
At this point, I think anyone can take it.
All right, Eryn, who created your favorite makeups? One of my favorite makeups was Meg's.
Your makeup was exceptional.
It was so beautiful and I liked the way you incorporated all the colors into your costume.
And, Jasmine, I just thought the paint job was spectacular and the colors were great.
Everything was tied together very well.
Who is the winner of this challenge? The winner of this challenge is Meg.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you.
I just thought your makeup was incredibly stunning.
I loved the organic piece of sponge that you used for it.
- It was just so lovely.
- Thank you.
Meg, congratulations.
You have earned immunity in the next Spotlight Challenge.
Thank you so much.
After two bottom looks, having this immunity has recharged my batteries and I just feel like now I'm ready to win Face Off.
Such an honor to have you with us today.
Thank you so much for having me.
All right, I will see you tomorrow for your next Spotlight Challenge.
Bye, guys.
Whoo! What? This is awesome.
Hoo-- Oh, my God.
McKenzie is standing in front of all these gates.
- Okay.
- I'm freaking out about what's gonna be on the other side of these gates, but, regardless, I'm hyped.
Dude.
- Hey, guys.
- Hi.
Today we'll be exploring a common theme in some of Hollywood's biggest films.
Now whether it's Zuul, the demigod gatekeeper from Ghostbusters, or Heimdall, Asgard's gatekeeper in Thor, we've seen how important it is to keep the dangerous inhabitants of other worlds at bay.
Before you are six gateways to uncharted dimensions.
So working in teams of two, your Spotlight Challenge is to choose one of them and use it to inspire both the gatekeeper and whatever it is he's keeping at bay.
- Wow.
- I am terrified.
This definitely means two makeups.
So it's gonna be a lot of work.
Now only the gate's key can unlock the mysterious world hidden behind it.
Cool.
And since the gatekeepers don't exist yet, I have the keys right here.
One at a time you'll each reach into this bag and pull out a key.
The person with the matching key will be your new teammate.
Got it? - Yup.
- Yes.
Stevie, you're first.
That goes to gate number one.
Awesome.
Number four.
Five.
- Number six.
- Cool.
You are teamed up with Stevie.
You're now partnered with Jasmine.
You're with Scott.
You're paired up with Jason.
You're teamed up with Ben.
You're partnered with Libby.
Girl All right, guys.
Go ahead and pick your models and get started.
I can't wait to see what you come up with.
- Thank you.
- Bye.
I was thinking of having a female gatekeeper.
Cool.
Cool.
Me and Ben are partnered up again.
We worked together super well the first challenge, so it was like we were reading each other's minds.
If he was, like, goat-like, then we can make her, like, fawn-like.
Yeah, dude.
We decide 'cause our gate is more celestial we wanna go with fawn creatures and it also has these different filigrees and we're gonna incorporate those into our characters as well.
All right, all right.
Looking at it, I'm definitely getting - kind of, like, medievalish.
- Yeah.
We both are digging this medieval theme and we have this guardian whose protecting her kingdom from this boar-hyena monster.
If we're gonna do an animal-like thing, it's gotta be accurate.
The problem with doing animals is that you really need to know their forms and I just don't have a lot of experience with animal anatomy, but I'm still sticking to it.
I'm too stubborn for my own good sometimes.
Are you sculpting that top part into his face piece? Half of it here and the other half - on the cowl.
- Okay.
We come to a pretty cool idea of this superior intelligent race that go around capturing aliens and plant mind-control devices in their skull and use 'em for their army.
An implant on their heads will have the light that shows the connection between the characters and hopefully it looks cool.
Is that good? You think right there? Yeah.
What do you think? I added more of the - snake detail to it.
- Ooh, yeah.
Jason and I get gate four and it looks really Mayan-esque so our gatekeeper's gonna be very serpentine.
The creature behind the gate is a goat-like statue that he brought to life.
I'm working on the living statue, so I start bulking up this sculpt and it is getting way too massive.
The thing is like a mask.
Yeah.
We're sculpting away, but there's a disconnect our sculpts at this point.
So I have to rip the face off.
I wasted half of our time today, but I feel like I didn't really have a choice.
If I sit here questioning any more, than I'm just gonna waste more and more time, so I decide to scrap this and I'm minimizing.
All the aesthetics of my design are still there, just on a smaller scale which is hopefully gonna work better for the design.
If I stuck with that sculpt, it would've been a shitty show.
I think we're going in the right direction now.
Meg and I have both been in the bottom a few times and the fact that she has immunity is terrifying because if we are in bottom look, I'm gonna be going home.
It's heavy.
Time is flying by Shit.
Then I drop my cowl.
Aw, man.
Oh, my gosh.
There's a huge indent in the corner of his head.
I'm scared to death.
I really do not have time for this.
My stomach is turning.
I just do not know what to do.
Aw, man.
I just dropped the cowl.
Now I have to go back and resculpt.
I still have a lot to do and this is a waste of time.
Hey, guys, we're here to check on your work.
- Hey.
- How are you? We're thinking of going with a demon behind the door and for the gatekeeper, we're going with a really powerful heroine.
I really like the sculpture.
The only thing, I don't know about the upper lip.
That might look maybe a little - Cartoonish.
- It has all these little fine wrinkles which you have going in here.
Maybe bring them to your lips.
The female is the gatekeeper.
She's an alien, but she's really gonna be, like, this badass girl.
He is a predator from a male inhibited planet come to try to dominate all the woman - and they said no way, Jose.
- They're not having it.
- His name is Jose? - No.
I like the tooth over here, but I think what you need to do is pull it out a little bit so you have some air.
- Okay.
- Let's see your other one.
Tell us about your gatekeeper.
That's the extent you're going to go with her makeup? - With the face.
- And the rest is gonna be - beauty makeup? - Yes.
- Great.
- We got the sci-fi door.
Instead of it being, like, a portal to another dimension it's more of, like, a prison cell.
Prison.
Our gatekeeper's gonna be regal, majestic.
I'm really not sure about your pixie nose.
This almost looks a little cartoony.
You could build up a little bit more here to give her maybe a thin, straight nose.
I don't know, for some reason, like, this, like, boar of a type creature started coming to me.
Mm-hmm.
Um I would give yourself some more definition on the cheekbones.
And maybe on your eyebrows too, you know, where it slopes up and around.
And of course the wrinkles on the nose.
Mm-hmm.
- Oh, shit.
- Do you have any questions? No, those are some of the things that I got a bit stuck on.
I don't have any room to mess up and this is really bad.
All right, guys, can't wait to see what you come up with.
- Good luck, everybody.
- Bye.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
That's exactly the way I feel, too.
I just can't believe that it's taken this long for me to get where I'm kind of starting to like it.
It looks beautiful.
That's time, guys! - That was a rough start, dude.
- Yeah.
I am so absolutely frustrated.
I was hoping to be done with the sculpt today and now it's really, really stressing me out.
It's day two and we have 12 hours in the lab.
So, the first thing I do is I start working on the adjustments that Mr.
Westmore suggested, but there was something that's just not sitting right with me in the nose area.
That's not gonna be an issue, right? - Do you think? - What? So, I'm just pushing around clay, but no matter what we do it's not looking good.
Bring back this lip.
It's reading like Hills Have Eyes rather than, like, animal.
I'm just trying to reform it, but it's not looking like an evil boar-hyena.
So finally I scrap the boar nose and make it more human.
I really need to make sure this looks good because I don't have immunity.
You know what? Even him having that one human element actually I feel ties him better to her now.
You know, that's funny.
I was thinking that too.
You were thinking the same thing.
I'm ready to mold my cowl and I'm a little nervous because I've never tried this shim technique before.
Where were you planning on putting your dividing wall? I was going to slightly bring it down like this.
It's similar to clay walls, but it's a little bit faster because I can do both sides at once.
Ben and I need to get almost all of our fabrication done if we want to be in a good spot for day three.
What are those numbers for? Just so I know how to line them back up.
Nice.
I'm gonna try and fabricate a helmet, a chest piece, and a lower body piece all out of L200 foam.
So, I start cutting up the L200, then I heat form it to the mannequin so it's gonna fit on the human body nicely, and after that I start to create a helmet.
As I'm doing this, Ben's creating a headdress for the female character.
I've never made a helmet like this before.
I'm following Jordan's lead.
We think they look great.
Jason is finalizing his gatekeeper sculpt and as he's doing that, I'm molding both of the faces with Ultracal which is a plaster-like material that's used for the molding process.
I have no fucking idea what's going on with this thing, dude.
And, like, every time I push it up water comes pouring out of it.
Water isn't bonding to the Ultracal like it should.
- It's separating.
- Look at that, dude, look.
It's, like, a mudslide.
Mine did that.
It'll set.
You just need to keep playing with it.
I don't have the fucking time for this shit, man.
Everybody's having bad issues with the stone.
Like everybody.
Is what it is.
You just got to work with it and, sometimes, you know, the weather, the stone-- all these materials - are super sensitive.
- Yup.
Ultracal is a natural substance and nature isn't a perfect science.
So all we can do is wait.
It's frustrating, but you just got to truck through and try to stay positive.
Can't make the stone set any faster, so.
With our initial stumble, Ricky and I lost time yesterday.
Now we have the problem with the Ultracal not setting.
Time is just disappearing.
I can't get to fabricating, I can't do anything.
If this stone does not set as soon as possible, we lose both of our faces.
I don't know how we'll recover from that.
Ridiculous, man.
It's still super moist.
If I don't get these molds popped soon, we're not gonna have faces.
Leave your mold.
I'll be doing the back of mine.
I'll check up on it.
Go do what you need to do.
I can't babysit them anymore.
I put on this last batch and I let them do their thing.
I have to get to fabricating and I have to cut a lot of corners.
Hopefully it'll set.
Is what it is.
I have some minor detailing left to do on the face sculpt and Kevon has a beautiful headdress that he has worked on for the female character.
- That looks awesome.
- Oh, thanks.
And now he's working on the horns that we're using to tie these two characters together.
The horns I'm excited to do.
I really like working with Styrofoam.
It's a quick, easy way to get a form shaped out.
Think I like at that angle.
Should be good.
And I start to used Worbla to make a pattern of the rings going down the horns.
- Sweet, man, beautiful.
- Thank you.
Worbla's an awesome material.
You just cut your strips, you heat it, and then you form it around whatever shape you want to make.
That looks really cool, actually.
- What can I do to help? - Just keep cleaning.
We've fallen behind again today.
Both sides of our cowl mold are finally done Let's get it on the ground.
But we don't have time to clean it.
And that means we'll have to run it in Polyfoam tomorrow.
We'll get it, man, we'll get it.
The problem with using Polyfoam, as supposed to foam latex is the thickness of the edges as well as the rigidity of it.
Using Polyfoam, it's not going to be the look or the movement that I really wanted for this character.
That's time, everyone! Good job, killer.
At the end of the day, Jasmine and I have two face pieces, two cowls, and we've pretty much got our arm gun started.
It's really crazy that we got all these pieces ready to go.
We've got a decent amount of work to do tomorrow, but it's nothing we can't handle so Feeling good.
Yeah! - Oh, sweet.
- I'm off to clean.
First thing that Jason has to do is finish cleaning out the mold for the cowl and then run it in latex and Polyfoam.
While he does that, I'm seaming and patching the face for the creature behind the gate.
Jason and I are extremely behind.
Oh, man.
Hi! You're gonna be a monster, man.
So, I'm gonna grab the bald cap for each of you.
I jump right into putting the cowl on my gatekeeper while Libby heads to the mold room to work on her beasty cowl.
I have a lot of hair laying and a ton of painting to do.
I definitely have to really utilize all of my time.
Sweet, I get better abs.
The plan is to stick 50/50.
Ben's gonna apply on the female model and I'm gonna - apply on the male model.
- There we go.
Everything is going down nicely, but since I've sculpted and fabricated so many pieces for my character, time management's really gonna be a key factor here.
Ben, check it out.
- Oh, awesome.
- The ear's on there.
I look over at Jordan's character and I decide that I need to do something to make our characters more cohesive.
So, I go into the mold room and I start putting antlers on the helmet to add more of a regal element to my gatekeeper.
I take the sculpting tool and add a little bit of an antler texture to it.
After that I paint it silver.
It's going pretty well and it's definitely adding that extra element that I was looking for.
More white.
The color scheme for the gatekeeper is a white, fleshy tone in the face and this very celestial purple color.
It makes me nervous using purple and I just want to make sure it doesn't look weird and cartoony.
So, I'm making sure to make everything look soft.
That's cool.
I begin covering my model with a base coat.
I want her to be slightly pale because it's gotta have a more immortal look.
But it's looking too white, so I'm gonna start air brushing more reds and to just do a bit more spatter painting on her.
So I'm starting to get the finished look I want with this.
- I feel like I'm missing something here.
- Okay.
Jasmine and I are constantly checking in with one another to make sure that our characters don't have similar paint jobs.
We want them to both be completely different.
I'm thinking we need to dial up a secondary color.
I think that will help.
Jasmine's amazing with an airbrush so I'm really taking a lot of notes and learning from her while this paint job's happening.
Yes, and then when we get that white in, I'm like, yes! I'm gonna hit him with some more, like, greens though for sure.
All right everybody, This is not the best piece.
I'm really freaking out.
Time is almost up and running Polyfoam took longer than expected.
And now, the cowl seams are horrible.
- I have nothing to apply.
- I'm sorry, man.
Time, guys, that's it! Well done in what time we have.
I'm going into last looks with only a bald cap on my model and I don't have a single piece pre-painted so we're in a world of hurt.
We get to the stage for last looks and I have one hour to create an entire makeup.
- I'm really freaking out.
- Have a seat.
I'm getting this guy just trimmed up.
The cowl is so stiff I'm ripping out some of the Polyfoam just so he has some sort of movement.
This Polyfoam is, like, hard.
I am definitely nervous 'cause it is my first beauty makeup, but part of winning the competition is taking these risks.
A good partnership can make you or break you in this competition and we are so in sync and on the same page.
So, girl, you so good.
Where the fuck are these teeth? The tusks look ridiculous so I decide to scrap it and it's really awkward because I specifically designed the skull for the tusks but there's nothing I can do about it at this point.
Can you help me glue some of this stuff down? Not right now.
I'm running behind.
I could use some help, Meg.
That looks ridiculous.
The front no longer looks like a snake and now I have to glue this headdress down to cover up some of my mistakes.
Does that look so stupid? - That's time, everybody! - Whoo! Whoo! I know we're in the bottom and it really sucks.
Welcome to the Face Off reveal stage.
You know our amazing series judges, owner of Optic Nerve Makeup Effects Studio, - Glenn Hetrick.
- Good evening.
- Hello.
- Hey, Glenn.
Oscar and Emmy award winning makeup artist, Ms.
Ve Neill.
- Welcome back, everybody.
- Thank you.
Hi, Ve.
And of course creature and concept designer, Neville Page.
- Hello.
- Hey, Neville.
All right, for this week's Spotlight Challenge, we asked you to use a unique gateway as inspiration for both a gatekeeper and whatever they're keeping behind it.
And we brought the gateways here today so that we can see your characters revealed with them.
Moment of truth here, guys.
Let's take a look at your final creations.
The headdress looks funky and my heart sinks, but there's nothing I can do at this point.
I'm worried about my technical aspect.
I feel like I bit off more than I could chew.
Our characters are definitely from the same world and I'm pretty happy with the amount of work that we were able to accomplish.
We're both really happy the way this is reading onstage.
We love it.
It's awesome.
Our makeups look cohesive.
I'm very happy and very confident.
He looks so good.
I don't think I've ever done such a cool makeup.
Me and Jasmine are beaming right now.
Judges, time to take a closer look.
The hair and the fabricated elements are not helping the sculpture.
You just cannot use human eyes in a serpent head like this.
This thing is really interesting looking.
In don't know if we're looking at something organic or carved.
There's a few things that I love about this, but then there's so many forms that just don't work.
- Woof.
- Yeah, no kidding.
There's just some crazy errors when it comes to anatomy.
My makeup's rougher than I want it to be and I am scared.
I think they were going for the hyena paint job.
It looks like a failure to communicate it within the skill set.
There's definitely a chance I'm going home today.
It's time to get on Twitter and tell us who made your favorite characters using #FaceOff I think they were going for the hyena type paint job.
It just looks like a failure to communicate it.
I'm really nervous now 'cause I don't want to go home yet.
- Wow, even better up close.
- Yeah.
The nose is beautifully crafted.
I love the luminous quality.
Wow, he's got a chest on.
Absolutely everything is fabricated.
That's a lot of work.
He didn't phone it in this week.
No, he didn't.
This is a good blend all around her mouth.
Lots of nice color choices, lot of spattering and stenciling.
I need this unitard.
I can tell you that much.
The skull is really cool.
I don't know why they made it such a garish color.
This is really fun, this makeup.
- I love the colors.
- Gorgeous colors.
Yeah.
You know what I like about him? He's like a slug with teeth.
It's really gross.
It's creepy.
Beautiful transitions from one color to the next.
All right, the judges have scored your creations.
So let's find out what they thought.
Stevie and Evan, Scott and Kevon Congratulations you are all safe and can head back to the makeup room.
The rest of you were the best and the worst this week and the judges would like to find out more about your work.
Jasmine and Nora, if you please, step forward.
All right, babe.
Tell us about your concept.
Our gatekeeper lives in a female dominant planet and our male character is an alien from another planet and was put into submission by our gatekeeper.
I'm thrilled with both of these makeups.
Clearly you work very well as a team.
- Yeah.
- Um, do they have names? - They absolutely have names.
- Perfect.
Having fun with it.
It was Jose and Brenda.
Fantastic.
Well, on Brenda, the color choices are fantastic.
There's so many cool things going on here.
And with Jose that is a major success in terms of sculpture and paint.
Really impressive stuff.
- Thank you.
- Thank you, guys.
I particularly like the makeup you did on your female because you did an absolutely gorgeous beauty makeup on her.
I thought it was a really good ideat that you put al thatt gooey stuff all over him because he's reminiscent of a slug to me.
- Well done, ladies.
- Thank you.
My favorite thing about Jose is the graphic breakup.
It's a really nice detail with the dark green and the light green.
Yeah, some really nice moments on this.
Thank you so much.
Jasmine and Nora, if you'd please step back.
Libby and Meg.
Please tell us how your gate inspired your creations.
We wanted to keep a very earthy vibe.
One was a higher race and the other one was more animalistic.
How did you break up your work? I ended up taking the gatekeeper and Libby took care of the beast.
I'm not real fond of the character that was behind the gate.
It's a very flat makeup.
The sculpting is poor.
When you get up close the whole thing is a mess.
Yeah.
So, Meg, there are some interesting things happening with your forms, but they do feel somewhat arbitrary.
Particularly around the jaw and the ears.
Mmm.
Libby, really work on your anatomy.
If you did this character with good anatomy this would be a totally different story.
Your mistake isn't you're not a good artist.
The mistake was very bravely trying to do something that was anatomically beyond what you currently have in your mind as a reference library.
Libby and Meg, if you please step down.
Thanks, guys.
Jason and Ricky, please step forward.
Tell me how the gate inspired these characters.
This is a shaman from the Mayan culture and he was turned into a snake.
He brought a statue to life to help protect the city.
I was in charge of the shaman gatekeeper and Ricky took the lead on the monster.
I think the snake is pretty nasty.
It feels comical.
It's really hard to get those giant snake proportions and have human eye dimensions.
The beast character, I hate the hand hoofs.
And the head to toe of the character really falls apart.
That snake character feels very Land of the Lost to me and it has that kids' show feel.
I can't tell if they're transformed or intentionally masks.
Instead of making it better, it makes it weird.
When your yellow haired person came out over here it looked like a teenage girl lizard going to a rave.
Yeah.
And I thought, "That is so goofy looking.
" Jason and Ricky, you can step back.
Thanks, guys.
Ben and Jordan.
Tell me about the concept behind these makeups please.
The creature behind the door was a soldier who was banished to the underworld.
And then this is our gatekeeper and within this staff is his-- his soul which helps keep him at bay.
- How'd you split up the work? - I did the-- the male character and Ben did the female character.
Unbelievable job.
There's so much harmony in the balance of these two characters and it's not just the two of them side by side.
It's within each character.
Her helmet is in balance with his helmet.
Impressive.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
When he walked out it was like "Oh, that is amazing.
" I knew exactly what was going on without having to hear it.
You both did such an amazing amount of work this week.
Congratulations, gentlemen.
- Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
The palate is perfect on the two of these combined and the sculptural detailing on both faces are so good.
- Really great job.
- Thank you.
Ben and Jordan, if you please, step back.
Thanks, guys.
- Good job guys.
- Thank you.
Thank you.
All right, if you please head back to the makeup room while the judges deliberate.
Thank you, judges.
All right, judges, why don't we start with your favorite looks tonight.
How about Jasmine and Nora? The gatekeeper had a gorgeous palate to her.
Nora's beast started to resonate more up close than it did from afar.
There's anatomical awareness and then there's some originality in there like that fin along the top.
And I also like that she put all that slimy stuff all over it.
That really fit that character.
All right, let's move on to Ben and Jordan.
She had that real soft, beautiful eloquence to her face and then he had a chiseled, robust look and it was really well done.
I loved it.
What astonishes me is what Jordan did head to toe.
Everything was addressed, everything was fabricated.
It's insane the amount of work that he accomplished in one challenge.
All right, judges, let's move onto the looks that didn't work for you so well.
Let's start with Meg and Libby.
Libby's lack of knowledge about anatomy was profound.
Well, I do have to applaud her for trying, anyway.
But the paint job was so poor.
It was just flat.
There was no dimension.
Why didn't Meg help her? I think she was overwhelmed trying to get her character out.
She barely got that done as it is, like, those horns were really bad.
And let's move on to Jason and Ricky.
The snake character does not look like a snake, but the worst decision has got to be - putting those feathers on - Oh, my God.
And putting them on in the way that they were applied.
Like, some sort of Xanadu roller-skate nonsense.
That's what panic looks like as a three-dimensional makeup.
With Ricky, from the chin - down it was a bit of a mess.
- That was dreadful.
They were basically men in masks.
All right, judges, have you made your decisions? - We have.
- Fantastic.
Let's bring them back out.
All right, Glenn, tell us about the top teams.
Jasmine and Nora, love the vibrant paintwork and detail in both characters.
We thought that the fresh take on the male's mandible was very original.
Ben and Jordan, your female character was subtle and beautiful, and the guy just looked like a total badass with all of his cool armor and that great paint job.
Okay, which team came out on top? The top team tonight is Okay, which team came out on top? The top team tonight is Ben and Jordan.
You guys just killed it in the head to toe department this week.
Each of them was a complete character and they looked fantastic together.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Ben and Jordan, excellent work this week, but we can only have one winner.
Glenn? The winner of tonight's challenge is Jordan.
Dude, you really blew us away tonight.
For you to complete that much work and for it to be that good, it's a huge achievement.
- Well done, man.
- Thank you so much.
I've been really wanting a win and to get a win with this character means a lot 'cause I had so much fun working on him.
- Jordan, congratulations.
- Thank you.
You, Ben, Nora, and Jasmine are all safe.
And Meg, because you have immunity, you are also safe.
You can all head back to the makeup room.
- Thank you, guys.
- Thank you.
Good luck, guys.
All right, guys, that means one of you will be going home tonight.
Please step forward.
Glenn, tell us about the bottom looks.
Libby, we appreciate that you wanted to go for it this week, but there's some serious shortcomings with your sculptural forms and the painting.
Jason and Ricky, you guys did show us skill in both of your characters, but the big picture was incongruous and underwhelming.
So who is going home tonight? The person going home tonight is Libby.
Your anatomy and your painting were both way off and that left us with little choice tonight.
Libby, I'm sorry, but you have been eliminated.
That means Ricky and Jason, you guys are safe this week and can head back to the makeup room.
Libby, we didn't really get to see the full breadth of what you're capable of, but I look forward to seeing what you can do in the future.
This experience has been awesome and I really tried to do something I wasn't actually technically capable of.
- Yet.
- Yes.
- You tried.
- Yes.
That's all, just not yet.
- Yeah, thank you.
- Thank you, Libby.
Libby, it's been great having you here with us.
Can you please head back to the makeup room - and pack up your kit.
- Good luck, Libby.
- Good luck, Libby.
- Thank you.
I am sad, but I'd rather go home for being overly ambitious and failing hard and having those judges be the one to give me feedback.
I'm going home.
This has definitely lit something within me.
I'm never gonna stop doing makeup.
I think I do have a lot more to offer and I'm just looking forward to the future.
