The Voice US (2011) s09e05 Episode Script
The Blind Auditions, Part 5
And take that stage, to know that we had one tiny part in somebody's dream coming true, it's really exciting.
They're just getting started in their careers, and for me to be able to be there at the beginning is just amazing.
I love this show.
To pretend I know what to expect when I turn around is insane.
Talent level this season is by far the best talent wee ever had on the show.
Whoo! Oh, my God.
I feel like I'm watching garth Brooks in concert right now.
I would love to work with someone like you.
That's my girl right there.
I love being a coach because, as a mom, I just love rooting for them, you know, just, oh.
Tonight Give it up for your coaches! The blind auditions come to an end, and with each coach having only two spots left Every note will count.
To fill their teams, our coaches will be even more selective You had a lot of heart and passion, but I felt like it was superseding the skill a little bit.
We have to feel like you're in control.
My team is almost full, and I'm waiting to push my button, because I want to hear something that completely blows me away.
And more competitive it reminded me of me.
Ore.
I disagree, because you sounded like a man.
Here we go.
I'm gonna get Blake.
What do you have to say about yourself? The trophy, it's about that big.
Honestly, you can just go down that boring route.
Yes! Are you done? I'm a stupid idiot.
Vote for me.
I'm being very picky.
The battles are coming up, and I'm just looking for more elements.
I would love for you to be on my team.
Let me help you explore that sound.
Then, stay tuned for an upcoming look at the intense battle rounds.
they'll never love you like I can no, no, they will never love you they'll never love you like I can I love the battles.
This is where we really see the best of the best.
Da, da, da, dun! Selena Gomez.
Hi.
Oh, my gosh.
Oh, this is gonna be fun.
Going to the finale and winning the show needs to start happening right now.
yeah! Each coach will have two steals, meaning anything can happen.
This show's awesome.
Surprises out of nowhere.
Thank you, Dr.
evil.
Yes! The biggest night of the blind auditions My team is full! Oh, my God! You just won the show again.
Whoo! Starts right now.
You're tearing Blake apart.
It's been exciting for me.
You and him It's so funny.
Priceless, man.
He's the Bert to my Ernie.
It's like peanut butter and jelly.
-Yeah, where is he? -Hey, Blake! Where's that big, sasquatch-looking I have found, in the past, that you can never have enough help when you're trying to get some of these artists to pick you as your coach, so, uh I brought some of my fans along.
God, that's a good look.
As Blake makes his way to the stage, let's meet tonight's first artist.
My name is Dustin christensen, I'm 35, and from orem, Utah.
Music was always my thing.
I mean, I'd be in school, and the teachers would say, "Dustin has a hard time concentrating," and it was because, in my head, I was just writing songs or or hearing melodies.
I was kind of an awkward kid.
I had this condition I mean, I still have it - called amblyopia.
- Mm-hmm.
It's like, essentially, a lazy eye.
Okay.
I'm legally, like, blind in my right eye.
My parents discovered it in second grade when they finally took me for an eye test, and the doctor gave me a patch.
I was the kid that had glasses and a patch and those croaker things that hold the glasses on.
It was supposed to make my right eye stronger, and it did, but I'm still real blind in my right eye.
I had a rock band when I was in high school.
We made some records and we got to play the 2002 Olympics in front of thousands of people, and you just think, "this is it.
" That wasn't the case.
I went to school, got my mba degree at northeastern university in Boston.
People just kept saying, you know, "he's right and left brain, so he can do the creative side and the academic side.
" I kind of was like, "just go get a desk job somewhere," and I couldn't.
Everything inside me was "you just have to do music.
" When you decide to do music for a living and you don't have a big record deal, you put your eggs in as many baskets as you can.
I do a lot of studio work, but to get a recording contract would be incredible.
I would have never pictured the kid that wore a patch over his eye in a position to sing for millions of people.
I would love to be on team Adam for the rock 'n' roll side of me.
There's not another opportunity for me on this level.
I fell like this is my time.
Yay, Dustin.
has punched a hole in the nighttime mist I climb through the window and down to the street yeah, I'm shining like a new dime full of all them Brooklyn girls they try so hard to break out of their little worlds oh, come on.
oh! Every night, every night is just the same 'cause all my dreams, all my dreams fall like rain he's a natural.
I like that.
He's a natural.
Wow.
What's your name? Dustin christensen.
I have been around guys my entire life.
I know how to hang.
I can hear your talent.
I relate to you.
I can tell you love singing.
You're perfect for the show.
Everyone's gonna know your story and everyone's gonna be rooting for you.
And you have a beautiful, talented voice, and I'd love to work with you.
Thank you so much.
Man, Dustin, I didn't turn right away, and it became undeniable.
I'm also gonna say there were a couple of moments I thought could be improved upon.
Sure.
Um, and that's something I have to offer you, as a coach, is that kind of honesty.
I thought you were fantastic, though, Dustin.
I really love what you did.
Thank you, man.
I appreciate that.
Thank you.
I think you came out here and sang with so much heart, and there was a lot of range.
I got, like, a John cougar mellencamp type tone.
Yeah.
We haven't come across anything like that since I've been here.
I thought it was super fresh.
You really have your own choice of what you want to do, and that's a testament to you coming out here and singing with so much heart.
Thank you, man.
That means a lot.
Thank you.
Yes, sir.
Hey, Dustin.
Gonna tell you what I heard in your voice.
It sounds like Neil diamond back there.
Yeah.
Oh, thank you.
Is that a guy that you like? I think everybody probably likes a little Neil diamond.
We're coming to America! Where is this going, I wonder? It's not going anywhere.
I just I love Neil diamond.
-I love Neil diamond, too.
-I love Neil diamond.
Get to the point.
What do you want to tell Dustin? It's too late.
I said it first.
I want to talk to you about similarities here.
We are the same person.
This is a jeans and boots.
He's got a vest.
I'm a vester.
Let me just ask my I just want to ask my friends over here.
Who do y'all think Dustin should pick as his coach? I mean, can you just my my fans over here.
Oh, that's so stupid! Oh, my God! That's so stupid.
I didn't even know you had those.
That is weird.
For me to set that up just for you it's almost like when a guy asks a girl to marry him, and he has an airplane, like, write it in the sky.
That's true.
That's how much I want to impress you.
That's how badly, Dustin, I want you on my freakin' team.
Wow.
Please, pick me.
Wow.
Oh, man.
Please.
I got to see can I just see these? I got to see one of these.
Let me see one of these.
Can I borrow this? Thank you.
Let me borrow that one, two? Let me see.
Okay.
Got rid of three of them, at least.
Let me just I'm a stupid idiot.
Vote for me.
So, Dustin, who do you pick as your coach? Well, first of all, thank you so much.
I know I could learn a lot from every one of you.
I just got to go with my gut.
um I pick Blake.
Yes! We're coming to America today Gonna have such a strong team.
Got me a four-chair turn with Dustin, and I'm really excited about this one, because there's so many opportunities to dig in to song ideas for him, because I never had a chance to work with anybody that sounds like him.
And I only have one spot left on my team.
Hey, brother.
Welcome, man.
Dustin c.
I'm freaking out.
It couldn't have turned out better for me.
I just had to go with my gut at the very end, and I went with Blake.
I'm gonna work incredibly hard to to win this thing.
Here he is.
This is my man right here.
In the flesh.
This is my man.
I brought you one of my fans.
Oh, nice! Yes.
Here I am.
Can I do the rest of it like this? See? We are the same person.
We're the exact same.
Hey.
Thank you, brother man.
Thank you, man.
Pleasure.
Honored you chose me.
Do you want me to take that home and hang it on your wall? Team Blake! Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake, Blake! Hey, Blake, Blake.
Hey, Dustin.
Don't go to his team.
He's from the city.
"He's he's from the city.
" Blake's dirty.
I'll fight Blake until I'm out of breath.
"He he's from the city.
" "He's from the city.
" Hey, Dustin.
Don't go to his team.
He knows a bunch of words.
Still to come The final night of the blind auditions continues.
did the wind sweep you off your feet? And the competition gets heated That's the real deal holyfield, baby! Yes! As our coaches fight to fill their remaining spots.
Stop wasting your time.
You will not question my line of questioning.
No.
Look away.
Look away from the Blake.
Welcome back to the final night of the blind auditions.
Growing up in Haiti, they'd speak French and creole.
There's a lot of poverty.
I remember sometimes we didn't have electricity at home.
There wasn't much that you could do except for go on the roof and sing.
When I was nine years old, my parents, wanting a better life, they said, "let's move to America.
" Talk about culture shock.
It was so different.
When my parents first got here, they had to work really hard to find a job.
Now they work at a grocery store.
Coming here, I didn't speak the language.
I was bullied a lot.
As a young child, you want to fit in.
It was hard.
The advice I want to tell to my sister is, um, be who you are, because I love how you are, andYeah.
He's the best brother I could ever have.
UmHe's so supportive of the things that I do.
And this really touched my heart.
In fifth grade, I started singing in choir.
There were auditions for the song "tomorrow" from "Annie," and the teacher was like, "oh, my God.
You sound so beautiful.
" For the first time, kids said "hi" to me.
Since that day, no one ever teased me.
Right now, I'm a Sunday-school teacher at my church, but I definitely want to have a career in music.
If I could have any coach, it's gonna have to be pharrell.
Being a soul singer, our styles match.
I'm hoping to make Haiti proud and to show that it doesn't matter how little you have.
You can make it anywhere if you just believe in yourself.
Let's go, berdine! Come on, come on, come on! She looks beautiful.
She looks beautiful.
yo, check it.
Yes, I'll be your woman, yes, I'll be your baby yes, I'll be whatever that you tell me when you're ready yes, I'll be your girl, forever your lady you ain't ever gotta worry, I'm down for you, baby oh, best believe that when you need that I'll provide that, you will always have it I'll be on deck, keep it in check when you need that, I'm gonna let you have it banging the drum like dum, di-di-day well, you want it in the worst way wanna hear you callin' my name be your woman, boy, you be my man be your woman, yeah, yeeeeeeeah make sure that he's getting his share go, go.
make sure that his baby take care make sure I'm on my toes, on my knees keep him pleased, rub him down, be a lady and a freak beating my drum like dum, di-di-day like the dirty rhythm you play come on, come on, come on, come on.
Oh, my gosh.
You're so cute.
So, what's your name? My name is berdine.
Where are you from, and how old are you? I was born in Haiti, but I moved up here when I was nine.
I'm 19 years old.
Wow.
I feel like your voice when I first heard it, I was like, "oh, she sounds like sia.
" Yeah.
You have this really amazing tone.
As the performance was going on, I kept hearing things that was like, "oh, I don't know.
Is that the tuning here or choices of melodies here?" But I think that you are adorable.
Thank you.
There was one run I looked at pharrell, and I was like, "oh, my goodness.
" It was towards the end.
It was really beautifully executed.
There was something just so soulful about what you were doing.
I didn't push because my team's almost full.
That was my excuse.
You were great, though, berdine.
Thank you.
You're on the right path.
From what I heard, it's as simple as just continuing to perform as much as you can until you have that perfect way to connect with a song, because I think that we all just felt a little bit of a disconnect.
We know you're a good singer.
We need to know that you're also a very focused artist.
This show is called "the voice," and I would love if you would see today as a lesson.
Choose a song that allows us to see all the colors in your wings, you know, 'cause your voice is super-fly.
So, just know that today, it can be the beginning of the rest of your life.
Are you with it? Yes, I'm with it.
You'll come back? Come back.
All right.
Great.
She's sweet.
I'm at a point right now in the show where I have two slots left.
I'm being very picky.
Even though I didn't turn a chair, I know my parents are still very proud of me, so I'll just keep doing what I do and come back.
This close.
So close.
So close.
Coming up With the teams filling up Yes! Our coaches hold nothing back That's not what you want in a coach right there.
Let me be the guy that helps you explore that sound.
To get the artists they want.
Whoo! Welcome back.
Let's see if our next artist, 27-year-old Dustin monk from Jacksonville, Florida, has what it takes to make a team.
I grew up in a double-wide trailer way out in a town called jesup, Georgia.
Ride all the way around the trailer.
As a kid, I was always very persistent.
It would be safe to say that bicycling wasn't my strong suit.
But I wouldn't stop until I got it.
I did it! Growing up, it was a lot of me and mom.
My dad split when I was around three years old.
I've been fortunate enough to have a mom that would go to the end of the world for me.
When I was 14, she had problems with her back, so she was prescribed some medicine.
So, unfortunately, my mom got addicted to pain pills.
One morning, my mom dropped to the floor, and they took her off in an ambulance.
I-I thought my mom had died.
I thought that she was gone.
During the period of my addiction, Dustin stayed in his room, and he loved the drums or the guitar.
That was Dustin's outlet, and I'm very proud of the man Dustin has become.
Due to the stuff that I've seen my mom go through, I just decided not a sip, not a hit, nothing.
So, I wanted to get a tattoo that says "drug free.
" This is what I'm about.
At 19 years old, I moved to Jacksonville.
and I ended up joining a pop-punk band called we still dream.
after playing so many hole-in-the-wall places, it got very tiresome.
You know, I toured for six or seven years, and nothing really came of it.
So, I ended up leaving the band.
I decided to go to barber school.
After graduating, I've been doing a little bit of work at a shop in Jacksonville.
We do $5 haircuts from tape ups, bald fades, flat tops, ears, clipper work, shear work, but as much as I love being a barber, music's my first love.
Me being a part of "the voice" this is huge for me.
People think I look like a hard-rock guy, but I like singing soul blues.
I think the blind auditions are perfect, because I don't think my voice matches my look.
Just to even get a fragment of the knowledge the coaches have would be amazing.
Me being here, it's just a reminder to myself don't give up.
All right.
He's got this.
woke up in, woke up in New York City just outside of Marcy's west 54 you're gonna know my name by the end of the night you're gonna know my name by the end of the night Yes! Aww.
I don't care, no, 'cause you don't caaaaare yeah, you're gonna know my name oh, yeah, you're gonna know my name no! this is real life right now.
What is your name? Dustin monk.
Those big notes that made him finally turn around super late It reminded me of me in the way that I just feel like when I go out there, I do whatever I can to seize the moment that is in front of me.
And there is a kernel of brilliance in your voice.
I'm so excited to be part of this, if I can be.
Truly thank you.
Adam said that there's part of what you did that reminds him of himself, and I disagree, because you sounded like a man.
He said he heard a kernel of brilliance in there.
I heard the whole cob.
The whole cob was in there, man.
He had the whole cob in there, and it was coming out.
Dude, I'm a just a fan of yours now.
Thank you so much.
Your vibrato is like Yeah, natural.
I was gonna say the same thing.
Crazy.
Like, "brr! Brr!" You know, like, do you have control over that, or is that just something that just comes out? It just happens naturally.
That's the exciting thing about what you do is I heard, even in those beginning those little runs in the beginning, there was a little bit of R&B in there.
And then there was some rock 'n' roll.
Mm-hmm.
The high note.
Everything you have everything in your voice.
Thank you so much.
And I notice you have tattoos.
That's fantastic.
I also have some of those.
We can discuss it.
I said a lot.
But still it seems like he's really said nothing, doesn't it? You remind him of him.
He's got tattoos.
I was explaining that he this, he that.
I'm a fan of yours, dude.
Ugh.
So, Dustin, who's gonna be your coach? To even have any of you care enough to press your button that means the world to me.
I'm trying not to get all, uh, you know, choked up up here.
he pushed his button first.
Oh, yeah! So, I pick Adam.
Yes! Man, awesome, dude.
Dustin there's something about that dude that I think is really interesting and engaging.
Amazing.
My team's almost full.
The cake is baked, coming out of the oven.
It's cooling off.
I need some icing and a cherry.
Good luck, man.
Seriously, thank you.
You know, I think if Dustin would have known that I also have a tattoo on my arm, maybe I'd have had a better chance.
I paid my dues, you know? I went through a lot of ups.
I went through a lot of downs.
Oh, my God! Oh, my God.
I'm in.
You're killing me out here, man.
He's awesome.
You're killing me.
Coming up, the sweetest audition of the night.
Thank you.
There you go.
Candy.
You guys enjoy.
Thank you.
What is this? Christmas? Oh, my God.
So good.
And later, a four-chair turn Deep breath, deep breath.
Just Leads to the most shocking decision of the season.
Oh! Oh, my God! I totally didn't see that one coming.
Hey, guys! It's Christina grimmie, your resident voice of style for the season, and tonight, we're going to see where all the fashion happens.
During the blinds, artists have been turning chairs in denim.
This fall, you can definitely expect to see some unexpected colors These are really cool.
Plus everything from distressed jeans Didn't do this myself.
To Jean jackets and chambray shirts.
For more style inspiration from "the voice," check out nbc.
Com/kohls and follow me @therealgrimmie where I'm going to be tweeting about tonight's fashions.
Welcome back to the final night of the blind auditions at universal studios, Hollywood.
I've been sort of on fire this season.
Like, lightning-rod hot.
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Yeah, what's going on with that? I'm awesome.
But it's not that.
Did you read some book on how to manipulate people or something? As our coaches head back to their chairs, let's meet this next artist.
Chase:'M chase kerby, I'm 30 years old, from Oklahoma city, Oklahoma, and we are at my family's candy store, where I work.
How many of these are we gonna do all together? Just five.
All right.
The candy store belongs to my mother.
She got it when I was 15, and we're going on 16 years now.
I work as a cashier, stock the candy, paint things, help take care of the books.
If there's a task that needs to be done, that's my job.
Are you having a good day, so far? Sometimes, it's hard to know if the girls are coming to the store for the candy or a chance to see chase.
All righty.
Bye.
Bye.
I wish chase would sing more often when he's at work, because I love hearing him sing.
Oklahoma city actually has a pretty amazing music scene, but it isn't anything like L.
A.
or New York, so I'm just lucky to be here.
Where'd the musical influence come from? Dad got me into jazz when I was really young, showed me a few chords on guitar, and I kind of got obsessed after that.
I've been in three bands that I've fronted since I was 17.
One of my bands, the city lives, started really garnering a lot of regional success, and we were the opening band for the all-American rejects on the gives you hell tour.
When the city lives ended in 2010, I was doing the restaurant gigs, playing to a roomful of people enjoying a filet mignon and completely ignoring you as you're stuck in the corner.
Music is not the most lucrative thing at a small level, and so there have been times where I'd want to throw my guitar out in the street and go get a job at an office down the down the way.
So very proud of you.
Well, thank you.
But my mom's always pushing me to do better and encouraged creativity.
Being on "the voice" is this culmination of everything that I've worked so hard for for years.
It's one of the biggest shows on tv.
It's amazing.
You know, I'll be 31 later this year, and most of my friends are all married with kids, nice, professional jobs.
You know, I'm still helping mom run the candy store and playing restaurant gigs here and there.
This is an extremely important opportunity for me.
You can do it, chase.
Come on.
you don't know how lovely you are it's such a shame for us to part knew she'd turn! I knew she'd love it! Whoa.
Oh.
No one ever said it would be so Yay! Nice job.
Thanks, guys.
What's your name? My name is chase kerby.
Thank you for singing that song.
I love that song.
You did a great job, man.
Congratulations.
I'll shut up, 'cause she chose you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Honestly, you're with the person that you should be with, no matter if all four of us turned around.
I'm down to one spot left on my team, and I kind of know what I'm looking for.
But that doesn't take anything away from how great you are, man.
Congratulations to you.
Thank you so much.
I appreciate that.
Congratulations, man.
Thank you, pharrell.
Thank you.
I'm really excited.
I think that your voice is really special.
You have so much control and dynamics, and I-I love how intimate you can be.
You're really delivering the emotion, and that's what I think is the most important thing, so it's gonna be fun to choose songs that I think we probably have the same taste in music.
Yeah.
I feel really excited, andI can't wait to get to know you better.
I, uh I actually, you know I-I-I brought kind of a treat for you guys.
My mom and I own this candy store, and, uh, I brought a little something for you.
Aww.
What? Candy.
There's a box for you, too, Carson.
Oh, God bless you.
So, you guys enjoy.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Oh, wait.
I've got something for you.
Give me some.
what is this? Christmas? Yes! Yay! team Gwen! Thank you so much.
the other coaches really missed out on having chase on their team and getting free candy.
He's a really good singer, and I feel like we have similar tastes.
Oh, my God.
So good.
Nice job, chase! I have been a fan of Gwen's since the beginning of no doubt.
She's successful.
She's beautiful.
She's talented.
There is no measure to how hard I will work on team Gwen.
Cong up, Gwen takes on Blake You can stick to your own you know what I mean? and just go down that boring route of Texas.
Trying to land her final artist.
She's just a girl in the world, man.
Yeah, I'm just a girl in the world.
And later, pharrell gets in the game.
I was waiting for great.
My team is full! That's a good one.
Welcome back.
I pick Adam.
So far tonight, Adam Blake.
Blake, and Gwen Team Gwen.
Have each added unique artists to their teams.
But pharrell I I'm not worried.
You got to stay the course and just be patient.
I got to catch up.
Let's see if his luck can change with our next singer, who we caught up with on the shores of Southern California.
My name's Dawson daugherty.
I'm 17 years old from San Diego, California, and I love to surf.
currently, I'm a senior at mission hills high school in San marcos, California.
Have you competed in surfing? Like two months ago, I was in the state championships representing my school, which was rad.
What inspired you to get into music? My youth pastor at church, you know, is a super-cool guy and playing guitar, singing, and I was just like, "man, I want to be cool.
" 'Cause surfing wasn't gonna make you cool enough? Most of my songs have been written out there, because it's a time where you're truly by yourself.
It's definitely a place of peace and just the beauty of it.
As much as I love surfing, music definitely is my main passion.
Growing up, I would lead worship at my church, and this last year, I had the opportunity to go to Mozambique, Africa.
While we were there, we helped build a well, 'cause access to clean water is so scarce.
I love to travel and help people, and music was a huge part of our trip.
We were in a couple villages, and he started singing to all these school kids, and they just started running over.
And Dawson did a great job ministering to the kids in terms of music.
He's just really developed, worked hard.
I'm proud of that.
I'm feeling pretty anxious.
These coaches are huge.
For my blind audition, I'll be singing "problem" by ariana Grande.
This might be a little bit of a risk, but I'm just gonna bring my own spin on it, because I think the coaches are looking for something that's unique and different, and I think this is the ticket.
Hopefully, I can get a button to push.
He's got it.
He's got it.
He's got it.
hey, baby, even though I hate you even though I can't forgive you 'cause even though I shouldn't want it come on, pharrell.
Come on.
push it.
Come on.
Push the button.
got no weight on my shoulders I should be wiser and realize that I've got push it! Oh, man.
Come on.
Push it.
I got one less problem without you I got one less problem without you Bummer.
Man.
- Aw.
- Yo.
What's your name? Dawson daugherty.
How old are you, man? See, I heard the youth in your voice, and there's a breathy quality that I really liked, but sometimes it was overwhelmed by, I think, a certain amount of inexperience.
Yeah.
I really enjoyed it.
I thought it was creative.
I think it's really hard to do a rhythmic song that has that many gaps in it.
There wasn't a lot of music coming out of you.
You know what I'm saying? There was a lot of space.
I wonder if that made it harder for us to press.
While I really enjoyed the arrangement and the breathy quality to your voice, in order for me to press my button, I would have needed you to commit to some of those interesting choices that you made in the chorus.
It's like a lightning strike coming down and disappearing before it ever hits the ground.
So, work on committing to these incredible ideas that you have, note-wise.
You'll be ready to come back here, and you should.
Thank you.
Pharrell's right.
You have the talent.
Now all you need to do is learn how to get a grip on the song.
We have to feel like you're in control.
Thank you.
Thanks for coming.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
Good luck, man.
Oh, man.
Not getting a chair kind of hurts, but the coaches did have good advice, and, you know, I'm gonna work on it and hopefully come back.
He's got talent.
Dawson had an amazing voice, but I have one more spot left on my team.
I think what I'm looking for now is something that's really different and recognizable and signature-sounding.
So cute.
Coming up More amazing performances and our coaches fight hard whoo! To build the best teams possible.
"I wish I could download your version.
Bibbity, boppity, boo.
" Hey, you should look at my phone.
There's a crap load of music from "the voice.
" There's also a crap load of music from "ghostbusters ii," man.
And stay tuned for a sneak peek and next week's exciting battle rounds.
Ain't no Mountain high enough was walking with my feet 10 feet off of beale you guys are magic.
That's as good as it gets.
Man, I really don't know what I'm gonna do.
That is the sound of a steal! Yay! Welcome back.
Our next artist, 16-year-old shelby brown, hopes she has what it takes to land one of the remaining five spots.
Elberta, Alabama, is extremely tiny.
It's a population of about 1,500 people.
There's not much to do in elberta, so I work in a tackle shop.
We have clothes.
We have bait.
We have tackle.
We also sell gas.
because elberta's such a small town, the bowling alley's pretty much I grew up singing karaokthere, .
And at 11, I got involved in a karaoke contest, won that two years.
Now they book me for my own gigs.
Going from performing at the bowling alley to "the voice" stage is definitely a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see if I have what it takes.
My parents are extremely supportive of me being a musician.
For my blind audition, I'm singing "stars" by grace Potter and the nocturnals.
It's a rock song, but it's still soft enough that I can incorporate some country aspects into it.
If I could have any coach, I would pick Blake just because, at some point, I want to end up in Nashville.
I never thought I'd be in this position, so I'm gonna take it and run with it.
One left? Me too.
Wow.
Go, shelby! I lit a fire with the love you left behind and it burned wild, crept up the mountainside I followed your ashes into outer space they make me wonder where you are all four! I can't look at the staaaaaaaaaaaaaaars whoa! Oh, my God! Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
What's your name? Deep breath, deep breath.
Just I'm shelby.
Shelby.
Shelby, those better be happy tears.
They are.
Good, good.
How old are you? I'm 16.
No way.
No way.
That's what being 16 years old, being driven, and dreaming super-hard gets you.
It gets you everybody in here standing up and clapping for you.
I want to say this to you.
The brilliant moments were so brilliant that it I have to be part of it.
I have one spot left on my team.
One spot.
And I couldn't be more sure the spot on my team was made for you, shelby.
I know it.
You sound like you have so much experience, but you don't because you've only been alive for 16 years.
So, that's, like, really mind-blowing to me.
And you have that kind of intuition and that kind of power.
I'd love to hear what your dreams are.
What kind of artist would you like to be? I'm a country singer.
But you like other stuff, too.
I do.
I'm very open.
Stop wasting your time.
You will not question my line of questioning.
Where are you from, by the way, shelby? Alabama.
What town? Um, elberta.
Alberta? Elberta.
Alberta's in Canada.
Oh, that's right.
Yes! She's not only a great country singer, she's also a great smartass, too.
That's awesome.
I knew I liked you! You were made for me.
I knew I liked you! You were made for me.
We're perfect together.
Oh, my God.
I love that.
Maybe.
No, no.
Look away.
Look away from the Blake.
Look at us.
Look at Gwen.
Just because you love country music, itsn really matter, I mean, genre-wise.
Yes, it does.
That's not a country song, by the way.
It's all music, and it all comes from your heart.
And it all comes from, you know, you as an artist and who you want to be, and I can help you discover that.
Thank you.
You deserve for four chairs to turn around, and in finding out that you're 16 years old, like, it makes us feel even better, because we want people back home to know that they have an opportunity to come on this show and win, too, for "the voice.
" So, with that being said, who do you pick as your coach? Wait.
I haven't even had a I didn't even get to I mean, come on! No.
I want to talk to her.
Is there any reason for Blake to pitch at this point? Nope.
I would like the opportunity to talk to shelby.
Hi, shelby.
I'm gonna buy your version of that song, 'cause that's the one that I want.
He's been saying that same thing for nine seasons.
I listen to it every single time.
"I'm gonna buy it on iTunes.
I wish I could download your version.
Bibbity, boppity, boo.
" Hey.
You should look at my phone.
There's a crap load of music from "the voice.
" There's also a crap load of music from "ghostbusters ii," man.
I don't know if your iPod is necessarily the barometer.
Listen, when you can just hit a huge note and just soar with it, there's no way to learn that.
You have to be born with that kind of lung capacity and that kind of pitch, and you have it perfect.
I mean, you have that perfectly born.
You're 16.
Oh, my God.
Now all you got to do is come on my team, and let's make you a country star.
What do you say? Oh, God.
What I would just urge you to do is not make your decision based on who you like the most.
Make your decision based on who you think would be the best coach for you, and your song choice suggests to me that you are not strictly a country artist, that there's other songs in you.
That's not even a country song.
It's a rock-'n'-roll song.
So, uh, just think about all these things, please, and now I'm done.
Who do you pick as your coach? Five, four, three, two, one! Welcome back to the final night of blind auditions.
Before the break, country artist shelby brown gave a standout performance, getting all four coaches to push their buttons.
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
We're perfect together.
Oh, my God.
I love that.
No.
No.
Look away.
Look away from the Blake.
I mean, come on.
Is there any reason for Blake to pitch at this point? Nope.
Now shelby has the tough decision of picking her coach.
Five, four, three, two, one! I pick Adam.
oh, my God! Won't you come and put it down on me? Ohh! I'm right here, 'cause I need I did not see that one coming.
I totally didn't see that one coming.
I'm so happy right now.
Me too! You're amazing.
Thank you! Amazing! You're pretty great, too! I was pretty shocked by shelby coming to my team.
I am blown away.
I think that girl is only at the very beginning of what she's capable of.
You should give him a hug.
I'll give him a hug.
You're so frickin' tall! I think I'm literally numb from the shock of shelby picking Adam.
Whoo! She's 16, but she's just got a huge voice, and the potential for somebody like her is just it's out of this world.
Shelby! Shelby! Being here at just only 16 on "the voice" stage is really frickin' crazy.
Oh, wait.
Here's your new coach.
I picked Adam because he was right.
I'm not just a country singer.
I like to explore.
I applaud your fearlessness to come with me on this journey.
I will not let you down.
I promise.
Love it! I'm gonna go celebrate this, by the way.
Whoo! By laughing in Blake's face.
That's the real deal holyfield, baby! That's how you do it.
That's the real thing.
My teais full! Adam has now locked the well-rounded team he wanted.
Adam.
Adam got off to a great start on night one.
I don't know if I'm happy or really scared.
I pick Adam.
My team this season is the most eclectic, talented people I've ever had the pleasure of having on one team.
I got rock 'n' roll.
I have country music.
I have pop music.
We gon' take you to motown now Little bit of R&B.
I've got a Hungarian dude that sings soul music.
I have a 45-year-old and a 15-year-old.
Goin' down the only road I've ever known Team Adam is unstoppable.
Are you guys sisters? We're twins.
We're twins.
Oh, my God.
We have all bases covered.
I mean, what? Whoo! I have the greatest team I've ever had on the history of "the voice.
" There's a new sheriff in country town.
Hey, dad.
What are you boys talking about? He was just saying how he's the new sheriff in town.
Damn right.
What are you guys laughing at? Captain sound bite.
About how he has destroyed some young country singers' lives.
It actually, like, gives us some kind of hope me and pharrell like, that we could maybe actually have a country artist at some point.
You know why you have hope? It's 'cause I only have one spot left to fill, and once I'm out of your way, you can have all the country singers you want.
Ooh, I didn't look at it that way.
As Gwen and pharrell strategize, let's meet our next artist, 26-year-old Amy vachal from Brooklyn, New York.
Growing up, my dad was in a grateful dead cover band, and I wanted to be just like him.
She was only, like, three years old.
I caught her singing out her thoughts.
So, that's when I first realized, "oh, she really loves to sing.
" I always loved music and painting and the arts.
I'm a very visual person.
When I hear music, I associate people's voices with color and shapes.
And for me, painting is an extension of my music.
I ended up going to swarthmore college, and I majored in economics and studio arts.
Right after I graduated, I decided I wanted singing to be my career.
I painted some pictures that were inspired by New York City.
Funny enough, I sold a couple of those and used that money to move to New York City.
My first job, I started as a waitress.
My boss found out that I played music, and he had me play for the dinner guests.
Right now I gig as much as I can, but pursuing anything in Manhattan isn't a cakewalk.
She invited us to an open Mike, and there were five people there.
And to watch her sort of grow from that artist to where she is now is just amazing.
It really is.
To know that I'm going to sing in front of four megastars, I look up to them in so many different ways, you know, I try not to make that shake my knees too much.
I know the teams may be filling up, but to have a chair turn, it could potentially change my whole life.
There she is.
Stars shining bright above you night breezes seem to whisper, "I love you" birds singing in the sycamore tree whoo! Whoo! Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me while I'm alone and blue as can be please, lord.
please pick me! Stars fading, but I linger on, dear sweet dreams till sunbeams find you sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you but in your dreams whatever they be Whoo! Whoo! Wow.
What's your name? Amy vachal.
Amy, my team is full, otherwise I would've turned around first.
Because not only am I sad that I didn't get to turn around for you, but you could win this whole thing.
Thank you.
Thank you so much, Adam.
First of all, I don't have a beautiful pocahontas, fairy princess, angel-like singer on my team.
You're creative with the way that you perform, and you just seem like a real honest artist.
And I just don't want you to get seduced by the fact that pharrell is so Cute? Cute.
It's distracting, okay? And then there's Blake, who, again, is very Sasquatch? Handsome, and, like ooh.
I can really help you on this journey because I did this already.
So I feel like we could have such a connection.
And I feel like someone like you, like, a pure artist that's coming from your heart, you are my dream princess.
Thank you.
Thank you, Gwen.
Hi, Amy.
Hi, pharrell.
How are you? What do you want to do? What genre? I'm interested in in blurring lines.
The old crooners, like Ella and Billie and Frank and Sam Cooke.
But, you know, I think there's so much possible today that you couldn't do back then.
Yeah.
So, I want to make a new hybrid.
Amy, I would be unbelievably appreciative to have the opportunity to aid you in that journey.
"The voice" is supposed to be a diving board, and after the show, you dive headfirst into what it is that you want to do.
You actually could do that with Gwen.
You actually can do that with Blake.
But, man, let me be the guy that helps you explore that sound.
Thank you.
Thks, anarrell.
Thank you.
You know what? I'm already sad right now, just thinking that I don't probably seem like the right guy for you.
But let me say this I know that I'm looking at a superstar.
I was hearing some norah Jones, and and I even some colbie caillat.
And you started talking about, you know, Frank.
Thank you for bringing what you do to this show because you are on a different path, really, than it's broken! Than anybody I've seen.
Broken! You know what else really upsets you, Adam? No! Don't talk to me.
Her guitar skills.
Yeah, you're really not helping.
Yeah.
Thank you so much.
Really, thank you.
That's all I can say.
I'm so impressed.
Please pick me.
Amy, I'm both delighted and saddened to have to say, who do you pick as your coach? Please.
I pick Pharrell.
Ohh! That's a good one, man.
Whooo-oooh! I cannot believe I got Amy on my team.
The idea that she wants to sing crooner-type songs is super interesting to me.
I think she's gonna be popular.
Your voice is so crazy.
Thank you.
Seriously, I'm gonna listen to everything you sing.
Pharrell's strategy is always to slow play.
And I am tired of it because it works for him.
But even though I didn't get Amy on my team, I am so happy she's on this show.
I cannot be more impressed with her.
I meant what I said, sweetie.
Congratulations.
I really hope I get a chance to steal her in the future.
She's so good.
He just won the show again.
"Adam's team is full.
Bring out the greatest singer on the show's history, and the most beautiful.
Yeah, cue her.
" Coming up More incredible performances.
And Blake stops at nothing I can give you a win.
To complete his team.
We already have such a cool connection.
Is this "the dating game" or "the voice," man? The world's changing.
I'm up for that, too.
Welcome back.
How you feeling about your team so far? I feel good.
You are driving me crazy.
You slow play everything And you try to throw it to me.
"I would go with Blake.
I would go with Gwen.
" And I'm tired of it.
You know what? I don't even want to sit by you anymore.
As Blake and pharrell work things out, let's meet our next singer.
My name is Blaine Mitchell.
I'm 24 years old, and I'm from fort worth, Texas.
Oooh.
Gonna kill it.
Gonna do it.
Growing up in Texas, everybody loves country music.
Country's in my heart, but my brother and I, we're like, "hey, we love alternative rock.
" I just love the feel.
The lyrics are great.
It's who we are.
Music has always been something that's been a part of my life, but growing up, my major focus was playing sports.
I played football and baseball, but baseball was my passion.
I was a junior in high school and the St.
Louis cardinals were scouting me, but in off-season football, I blew out my knee.
Mlb said bye-bye.
That became the moment that we're like, "hey, we can make a band.
" My brother plays the drums.
We're good at this.
In 2011, my brother and I formed our band, treeside.
We recorded an e.
P.
And started gigging, but it's difficult to make a living as a band in Texas.
So I started singing at cowboys dancehall.
It's a honky-tonk bar where everybody's doing the doughnut circle, dancing around, two-stepping.
And I was the guy up on the stage singing three sets night after night, full-out country songs.
So, I have that foundation there, but alt rock is just my passion.
"The voice" it's just not an opportunity that you get in a lifetime.
To be able to work with these coaches would be amazing.
It'll be weird not having my brother onstage, but I think this is a good opportunity for me to step out and show people what I have.
Oh, my gosh.
Come on, Blaine.
He's gonna kill it.
Now that she's back in the atmosphere with drops of Jupiter in her hair she acts like summer and walks like rain reminds me that there's time to change did the wind sweep you off your feet? did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day and head back to the milky way? and tell me, did Venus blow your mind? was it everything you wanted to find and did you miss me while you were no! Are you lonely looking for yourself out there? Oh, my gosh.
He made it.
Hi.
Hello.
What's up, guys? Where are you from? I'm from fort worth, Texas.
And what's your name? My name is Blaine Mitchell.
Are you do you play I played at cowboys dancehall in Arlington.
Uh-oh.
And, um So So, you like orange county girls.
Not a great start, Gwen.
So, it was incredible, just hearing your strength.
And you know what I really loved was the dynamics.
You could tell that you know what you're doing, and that you have a story to tell.
And then I saw Blake, and I was like, "I'm gonna get Blake.
" That's not what you want in a coach, right there, buddy.
First of all, I got questions for you.
Is it the most fun to play cowboys? I love playing there, man.
That's one of the last places here we go.
Here we go.
That's one of the last places that you can actually get onstage And people are dancing, they're they're actually yes.
Gwen is ready.
Yeah, they're absolutely out there dancing.
You don't see that much.
I got the square dance for everybody out there.
Oh, God.
Get a room.
Get a room, you two! Absolutely, man.
We already have such a cool connection.
I've seen you eating dinner in denton.
Did you? And I did the quick little Oh, give me a break, everybody.
Did you really? That's right.
I did.
That's is this "the dating game" or "the voice," man? Hey, the world's changing.
I'm up for that, too, man.
Let's That was good.
That was good.
I just thought, you know, at first, "that's a rock song, and somebody will hit their button, surely to God.
" And then you started hitting some notes.
That one that you hit, and you just held for a long time, and then by the end of it, you went for the extra note, and your voice kind of got gravelly and raspy I'm a fan, dude.
I appreciate it.
Honestly, you can stick to your own you know what I mean? and just go down that boring route of Texas, and Oh, man.
Or you can try something fresh and new.
Well, so, I sing alternative rock.
Well, there you go.
I have been in a band with all guys my entire life.
The good thing about me, I can give you the rock, but I also can give you like, I'm a girl, so I know all the other tricks of the trade.
I can share those things with you and, um, just give you a fresh new, like She's just a girl in the world, man.
You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
I'm just a girl in the world.
I can give you a win.
The trophy, it's about that big.
It's got this this little hand with a microphone, doing this.
I've got four of them, so Oh, ho, ho! That's very brag-adocious.
So, who do you pick as your coach? I think he's gonna pick Gwen.
I got to go with Blake on this one.
Aah aw! Yes! Blaine's a rocker, but he's also got a lot of other elements to his voice, and that always works well on this show.
You're gonna make this easy for me.
Good.
Good! Good.
I'm an alternative-rock guy, but I have a country soul.
So as soon as Blake turned around, I was like, "yes! Thank you, Blake!" Let's do some square-dancing! I'm in a band with all guys.
I surround myself with all men, all the time.
I'm gonna use and you know what, I'm gonna use I can I'm gonna use that.
I can give you stuff that a guy can't give you.
It's the truth.
Geez.
And I'm gonna I'm gonna bring him out.
I got something to say.
My team is full! With his team complete, Blake has successfully found the eclectic artists he was looking for.
Whoo! I love that you picked a janelle monae song, he has no idea who that is Blake Shelton.
I turned around for nadjah.
I didn't turn around for janelle.
I pick Blake.
Yeah! You know, the best thing about my team is that they're diverse.
maybe we found love right where we are I may not seem like the obvious choice for you, but I am.
I'm gonna go with Blake.
To me, a great voice is a great voice no matter what genre they're in.
oh, that's good.
Blake.
Yes! I'm so proud of every one of these singers that I have.
I'm trying to pioneer a new sound country music with some soul.
-What do you say, ol' red? -Let's do it.
I'm blown away by the talent of my team this season.
I don't want to see you get lost in the shuffle.
Superman don't get lost in the shuffle.
I mean, I've obviously got country singers, but, man, I've got pop, I've got rock.
And that's worked for me in the past.
who do y'all think that Dustin should pick? See this? Pretty sure I got the winning team.
Thanks, man.
Thank you, brother.
Coming up, Gwen and pharrell fight to the finish You are really amazing.
I will say that I'm pretty tight with Blake.
Use that, 'cause I don't help pharrell at all.
As they complete their teams.
My team is full! Welcome back to the final night of the blind auditions.
With only two spots remaining, the artists nervously await their performances.
Let's see if our next singer, 21-year-old summer schappell, can turn a chair.
I realized I could sing when I was really little.
I always loved to put on shows for my grandparents.
I used to stand on our coffee table and sing with a microphone.
My grandparents have raised me since I was a baby because my mom has always struggled with addiction, and I'm not close with my dad at all.
You're gonna do good, summer.
I mean, this is gonna be really cool.
You're awesome.
Really cool.
It's hard for me to think that, when you want to be a grandparent, you also have to be a parent.
I don't even want to think of where I would be without them today.
I started performing when I was about 14, and most of what I did was opening acts for people who came to reading.
We would call the promoters of the show, and my grandparents would do it.
"Hey, our granddaughter summer would love to come open for" whoever it was.
And I think probably because we are such a small community, that's how it started.
I got to open for little big town, Josh Turner, leann rimes.
And at 14, I traveled to Nashville and recorded my first album.
It's expensive to record and to keep making all these trips to Tennessee.
And everything that I've done musically, my grandparents have funded.
We just kept dumping the dollars in and selling the old cars and selling whatever we had.
There definitely have been times when I wasn't sure if music was worth it anymore.
And my grandpa told me that we would live under a bridge and eat out of tin cans before he'd let me quit music.
She was so deserving, and we wanted her to have every opportunity.
Everything my family and I have been through, this moment is what makes it all worth it.
To have a chance like this on "the voice" is once-in-a-lifetime.
I'm feeling nervous.
You do sit and wonder whose team is open, how many people are left.
But today's about my grandparents and I.
Sorry.
My grandparents are the reason I still sing today.
Hey.
Let's go, summer.
-Oh, my goodness.
-All right, summer.
Knock 'em out.
He was working through college I was thirsting for knowledge yeah, I was caught somewhere between a woman and a child it's funny how those memories, they last the hot July moon saw everything my first taste of love was bittersweet that's pretty good.
Right? yeah! Yeah! what? Whoo! Hi! Hello.
What's your name? My name's summer schappell.
I have a full team, so my button has been disengaged.
And I wanted to tell you, the glassiness of your like, the yep.
Like a like pixie dust.
It's got pixie dust on it.
Thank you! Um, I'm happy that these guys turned around.
So, congratulations.
Thank you.
I don't really have anyone with a voice like you.
I-I only have one more slot left on my team, but I think that you have a really pretty voice.
It sounds really soothing, and I really en-enjoyed it.
And then when you were you hit some really beautiful note at one point.
That yodel that she did.
Yeah, it was a yodel.
It was just, like, exactly on pitch.
-Yeah.
-And I was like, "you know what?" I looked at Blake, and then when he gave the blue-eyed, like, [As blake.]
"Good that's good.
" -That's good! -That was good.
By the way, my team is full, too.
I just wanted to say to you real quick that that's that song is harder to do than people may realize.
I thought you did a really good job.
I'm glad that you got a couple of chairs to turn, because you deserve it.
Thank you so much.
Hi, summer.
Hi! I know that this is completely out of my wheelhouse, but country is definitely something that I appreciate.
I only have one slot left.
I pressed my button because I felt like there were some impressive things that you were doing.
Thank you so much.
I will say that I'm pretty tight with Blake, so She's right.
Use that, 'cause I don't help pharrell at all.
Summer, who do you pick as your coach? I'm so, so grateful for all of you guys.
Um, I pick Gwen.
Yay! Can't complain about much these days all right.
Promise I'll I'll make Blake help me, okay? Oh! Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
You have a beautiful voice.
country! Country! I finally got a country artist.
Blake couldn't press his button and totally missed out.
I think she's a really pretty singer, so I feel really excited about her.
Man, you stole one.
My team is full! Gwen returned to "the voice" ready to show the guys that she was back to win.
bring it on home to me, yeah I could see you in a band with me.
I have idolized you since I was 5 years old.
I pick Gwen.
Oh! I have an incredible team.
It's gonna be a fun season.
What life looks like from up above you're on team Gwen.
Yeah! I pick Gwen.
Oh! Wow! My team this year is so eccentric.
I feel like it's so me.
Your voice felt like a true artist.
Oh, my God.
Yeah, you gotta love the pain I have a powerhouse singer.
I have a soul singer.
I have an indie singer.
I have a lot of singers that sing from their heart.
Having a team full of lots of different, kind of unique characters is what you want.
We don't have to take our clothes off she revolutionized for all women in bands.
Oh, my God! That is her.
There has been a lot of talented singers coming through.
It's gonna be really fun to see everything really kind of reveal itself.
My team is strong enough to make me the first female coach to win "the voice.
" You can listen to full versions of tonight's blind audition songs on apple music Or buy them on iTunes.
Coming up, an artist with a small stature I'm 4'11".
Sometimes I just need a little boost.
Hopes she has the big voice pharrell has been waiting for.
So, basically, I'm the only person that can turn around.
Yeah, you got your pick of the litter now.
Come on.
Be good.
Welcome back.
Today's a big step for our next artist.
I'm Caroline burns.
I'm 15 years old, and I'm from Hollis, new Hampshire.
Oh, my God.
I'm 4'11".
Sometimes I just need a little boost.
When I go out to eat, they just assume that I'm under 11, and I like getting the kids' menu.
I've always sang around the house, but I put out my first YouTube video around 7 years old.
We didn't really expect anyone to watch it, but they did, and I've just been posting YouTube videos ever since.
I just started a band with my friends at school.
My band mostly plays, like, classic rock music, but I'm trying to make them do a maroon 5 song.
Yeah, I think Adam's cute.
He's also really good at singing, and that's why I like him.
The biggest crowd I've ever sang in front of is probably nascar.
There robably 100,000 people in the stands.
I was pretty nervous.
I think this is really a massive opportunity for her.
Uh, we live in a small town in new Hampshire, and it's kind of hard to get discovered.
This is the biggest thing I've ever done.
I like that the coaches can't see you on "the voice," because, since I'm so small, I think that it will be a surprise to them if they turn around.
When I get on that stage, I just need to put my nerves aside.
I don't want to get overwhelmed about who I'm singing in front of.
I'm just gonna pretend that it's just me.
So, basically, I'm the only person that can turn around.
Yeah, you got your pick of the litter now.
Oh, my God.
Go, Caroline.
how can I love when I'm afraid to fall? all of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow wow.
I like the look.
I have loved you for a thousand years come on, pharrell! Go! I'll love you for a thousand more the button.
Really? Oh, my God! She's so cute! She's a baby.
Dang it.
My team is full.
I can't press my button.
I'm s I'm gonna go back and cry.
She does cry a lot.
I do.
Can I just guess how old you are? Yes.
Oh! What is your name? My name's Caroline burns.
The good news is, you are really amazing.
Thank you.
But the not-so-good news is that I have a voice on my team that is close to yours.
I'm telling you right now, there's no doubt in my mind that if you're willing to come back, you're gonna get a four-chair turn.
Okay.
I know for sure that everyone in this room wants you to come back.
Just say it with me.
"Caroline, will you please come back?" Caroline, will you please come back? Yes! Of course.
Thank you.
That was so cool.
I did my best.
And even without the chair turn, it was the best day of my life.
That crushed me, man.
She's so cute! I can't stand it.
I'm just hoping the next one is it.
I have one spot left, and it's got to be special.
Coming up, which artist will fill the final spot on pharrell's team? I was waiting for great.
My team is full! Yes! And then stay tuned for a sneak peek at the battle rounds.
Yeah! That was my favorite battle that I've ever seen.
That's as good as it gets.
The winner Of this battle Is Welcome back.
On night one of the blind auditions You give and you give and you give and you give Reigning champion coach pharrell started strong, scoring the first singer of the season Pharrell! R&b artist mark hood.
I'm super pumped about my team.
It's a little of everything.
My strategy was looking for different tones, different stories, and great ambition.
I just want to continue to work with artists that are inspiring At this point, the situation's out of control And that charge me to pull more out of them.
What's your favorite Stevie wonder song? "Overjoyed," for sure.
Would you do a verse and the chorus? ohh! I've been building my castle of love and you definitely earned your position on this show.
It's what makes this show great.
that's how you find the voice.
Season nine, I am definitely hoping for another win.
Now, with only one spot left, pharrell is feeling the pressure to find the perfect singer to fill his team.
Unfortunately, these next singers just missed the mark.
I love Southern rock, but now I only have one spot left.
I think, for you, less is more.
Thank you.
My little darlin' is a firecracker somebody like yourself who's born with a natural, different tone, you got to work extra hard on technique.
Thank you so much.
you had a lot of heart and passion, but I felt like it was superseding the skill a little bit.
But you definitely have something special.
Thank you, pharrell.
Thank you, thank you.
Is your button broke or something? No.
I'm just waiting on something to be like, "whoo!" Let's see if our next artist, 16-year-old Georgia native Sydney rhame, will get pharrell to push his button.
Here, you can put them on the thing.
They have to be perfect.
I learned how to play guitar when I was 7, and started writing songs when I was about 5 years old.
Ready, go.
I love to teach little kids guitar lessons so I can save up for college.
Good.
You're you guys both had awesome c's at the end.
I love being able to see kids as excited about music as I was when I was younger.
I played my very first show when I was 8 years old.
When I was 10, I would do open-Mike nights.
I really perform out wherever I can.
My mom helps me with setting up performances, and my dad helps me set up my equipment.
I am one of Sydney's biggest fans.
And I'm her number-one roadie.
My dad loves "the voice.
" The winner has to have a hat on.
That's how it works.
He's the reason that I'm trying out.
It would mean so much to me to make my dad proud by being on this show.
Before I was born, my dad was diagnosed with m.
S.
Sometimes he'll lose balance, or he'll have bad mood swings 'cause of the medication he'll be on.
So it's been really hard on our family emotionally and financially, but he doesn't let his disease get in the way of, you know, who he is.
And I wish I could do more, but I'm only 16.
So I try to keep a positive attitude.
We may not have a lot of money, but we're very rich when it comes to love.
The nerves are definitely kicking in the closer and closer it gets.
I'm gonna be singing for four of the biggest names in the music industry, and that's very intimidating.
There will never, ever be another opportunity like this for me.
Is this really happening? Come on.
Be good.
we keep this love in a photograph we made these memories for ourselves where our eyes are never closing inside the pocket of your ripped jeans holdin' me closer till our eyes meet wow.
inside these pages, you just hold me oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! well, I will remember how you kissed me under the lamppost back on sixth street hearing you whisper through the phone What is your name? M-my name is Sydney.
Girl, wait.
Go ahead.
Come on.
Sydney, how old are you? I'm 16.
What?! What? Man! Beautiful range.
Just know that I'm here to protect everything that you already are, and if there's gonna be any pushing, it's gonna be pushing to be even brighter, because I think that you are a shining star already.
Thank you.
I've had people here for no less than 12 hours Because everything thgreat.
Thank you.
And I'm so pleased to be able to say, because you're so great, my team is full! Yes! Oh, man.
Oh, my God.
Yes.
We love you.
thank you.
That this is as good as it gets She just sang with, like, beautiful dynamics and really lovely way of, like, approaching the song.
Sydney was worth the wait.
what a way to end the season nine blind auditions, with a great great vocalist.
The blind auditions have ended, but our coaches are just getting started.
Next week, they will pair their artists for the most challenging part of the competition yet the battle rounds.
He'll never love you like I can I feel like we're at the grammys right now.
Yes! I love the battles.
This is where we really see, like, the best of the best.
That was my favorite battle that I have ever seen.
Whoo! To help bring the battles to new heights, our coaches have enlisted some of the biggest names in music.
Multi grammy award-winning country star Brad paisley, founding member of the legendary band creedence clearwater revival, John fogerty.
Missy! Multi grammy award-winning artist and producer missy elliott.
What?! And singer and actress Oh, this is gonna be fun.
Global pop superstar Selena Gomez.
With the advisers' help, our coaches will push their artists like never before It's an all-out, drag-out rock-'n'-roll song John fogerty sings, and he's right in front of you.
What could you possibly have to be nervous about? You have this ability to transfix people, and I would just encourage that.
It almost feels like you're just kind of backing her up.
Yeah.
And I don't want that, because this is really has to be about you.
I told you you could always count on me, baby And the artists will rise to the challenge.
Y'all fittin' to make me cry.
Aww! And you don't hear that these days.
Or feel that.
Or feel that.
Delivering some of the strongest performances ain't no Mountain high enough we've ever seen.
and there ain't a Mountain what the hell just came out of you? The fact that one of you guys is gonna be available right now blows my mind.
So, let's party.
And with the level of talent this high These two guys on the ends, they want to steal you.
Picking a winner will be more crucial than ever.
That is the sound of a steal! Yay! You know, the steals have truly been a game changer, and we've seen people who were stolen win this show.
It's the biggest season of battles yet.
Are you gonna go with superwoman or Lex Luthor sitting down there? It all starts next week on "the voice.
" Oh! Exactly.
What is happening?!
