[WOMAN] My mom, she's busy.
She goes to work.
It's a ten-hour shift. And
then she goes to school.
She cooks. She cleans
and does her homework
until two in the morning.
And then she goes to sleep.
[WOMAN 2] How is she functioning?
I don't know. I really don't know.
[TIMER BEEPING]
[ENERGETIC MUSIC PLAYING]

where she has worked as a housekeeper

If you came from your country
and they give you a ride to Las

you get amazed with the

and her eldest daughter, Madeline."

all the best qualities.
The most beautiful thing I
see about her is her heart.
She breaks her heart for her family,
and that is her daughters.
to working a full-time job,
Sara put herself through junior college
to obtain an associate's degree
and is in the process
of transferring to UNLV
for her bachelor's degree
in hospitality management."
- Wow.
- She is a multitasker.
I decided to go back to school
'cause it's a very physical job.
My hips start hurting,
my joints start hurting,
my back, my knees.
So I won't be able to do
this job for 20 more years.
[MADELINE] I remember when she was
pregnant with both of my sisters,
bending down, cleaning the bathtubs.
Yeah, it's a very hard job.
Having a bachelor's degree
in hospitality management
opens a lot of doors.
It's something that helps me to
get a better life for the girls.
How was your day at school?
- Good?
- Yeah.
[SARA] My kids are the ones that
give me the strength that I need.
Sometimes I feel like I'm
against the world by myself.
"Five years ago, Sara's husband
was deported from the United States,
leaving Sara to raise
the three children."

[SARA] How do you explain
a five-years-old kids
about regulation that the
government have and all that stuff?
There is there is no way
to explain something like that
to a five-years-old kid.
[MADELINE] My mom was devastated.
It's kind of hard when life has
just been throwing rocks at you.
We have had to start
from zero more than once.
It's easier when you have two parents.
But you have to adjust 'cause
you have no other choice.
So that's when Madeline
have helped me a lot.
[MADELINE] Julia, can you please
come help me pick up the plates?
- [JULIA] Yeah.
- Tabatha, please help her.
I would say I'm my mom's right hand.
I pick them up at school. Then
we come home and I make them food.
I help them all do their homework.
It's the best way that
I can help her out.
- I'm studying for my test tomorrow.
- [MADELINE] Studying.
You better study, girl.
Having a supermom, she's always
like, "You have to be better than me."
Girl, you never have homework?
[MADELINE] So she
pressured me to go to school
because I was taking time off.
So she's like, "If
I'm doing it, you can."
I want to set an example
so that way they can see that
they can do more for themself.
"Maria Elena wants us to help Sara see
that her hard work
deserves to be celebrated
because she's the first
person in her immediate family
to ever earn a college degree."
[IN SPANISH] Sara has made a lot
of effort to go to the university.
Sleepless nights because
she's very ambitious,
just as you see her.
She wants more and more.
But I plan to give her a celebration
because she's very reserved.
Very reserved.
That's why I feel very moved that
you're giving Sara this opportunity.
Because I love them.
Because I love my daughters.
we can give to her.
I'm excited to meet her.
I'm entitled to get an associate
degree and and graduate.
But I won't celebrate
until I get what I want
'cause I'm planning not to stop
until I get my bachelor's degree.
That's my goal.
[MADELINE]I think it's about time
that she starts focusing on herself
because she's, like,
really trying in school,
but she's so busy.
It's taking a toll on her.
It's like she's in a hole,
and she can't really dig
herself out right now.
So I feel like the Fab
Five can help with that.

My first impression of Sara
is that it's gonna
be really hard for her
to receive anything just for herself.

the floor and not the bed?

[JULIA] Me sleeping with my sister
was supposed to be temporary.
Our mom didn't have time to
move the furniture and stuff.
So how it is right now, it stayed there.

I wanna talk to your daughters.

When was the last time
your mom had some fun?
- A long time 'cause I don't remember.

She doesn't really like
having birthdays either.

her, we don't spend a lot of time.
We only, like, meet her, like, one time.
- And then she has to go to work.

[JULIA] There has been a lot
of change going on in her life,
but it's mostly not for the better.
Just a few, uh, days ago,
we bought a car.
And, like, after a
week, on her birthday,
it stopped working on the freeway.

She's definitely been through a lot,
to the point where she's lost her light.

like the house to feel like?
Like, if you could dream up the

And I think Tabatha and Julia,

and you're raising three

- [SARA] Very surprised.

You've been having a lot of surprises
over the past couple of years, right?
Mm-hmm. It's been hard financially,
but I have my motivation.
Three beautiful girls
that have a good heart.
So I'm thankful for what I have.

next chapter, school.
Do you ever celebrate yourself?

There is always something else to do.
And I cannot stop. I have to keep going.
I got enough credits to get
my, um, associate degree,
but I don't want to go through
the graduation and all that stuff.

me, my goal is to get my bachelor.

to walk graduation.

[JEREMIAH] The real heartbeat of Vegas
is people like Sara who've been
working in the hospitality industry.
Her whole identity is just wrapped
up in taking care of other people.
So I wanna give Sara the most insane,
over-the-top renovation possible.
[ANTONI] Sara loves
preparing Mexican food,
but she wants to lean into
the cuisine of the country
in which she's inhabiting.
So I wanna teach her something easy
that she can have her daughters
help her make going forward.
[TAN] I wanna find clothes for
her that will work for interviews,
that will work for college,
that will work for a new job,
and put her in things
that make it very clear
that she is ready for the next step.
[KARAMO] Sara's husband
being deported is horrible
because all the pressure is on her now
to do everything for the
family, for the girls.
But at the same time, she
has to take care of herself.
So I wanna make sure I
can help her to slow down
and understand balance.

because she's so busy.

And quite honestly, they don't

which is hopefully joy.

brand-new primary suite
because she works ten-hour shifts.

of herself as well.

us to make a moment for you.

Why did you choose Vegas?
Um, my mom, my dad, because
back then my dad was here too.
- They were together.

- And my only sister were here.

Learning that, um that
your husband was deported,
I'm guessing it came as a shock.
- Like, you weren't expecting it.
- It was suddenly.
So the plans we had
changed suddenly too.
- [ANTONI] Yeah.
- Our entire life.
Do they communicate with him regularly?
- Do they have phone calls?
- Yes, very often. Yeah.
In a way, he's been there for them.
Okay. Not able to
physically be there, but
Not the way we planned it to.
But, yeah, he's been there.
But I will make it work because
giving up's not an option.
- You made a lot of sacrifices to be here.

I don't see it that way.
I think I'm just doing what
every mom do for their kids.
[ANTONI] It's shocking
what she's gone through,
but there isn't a single ounce
of feeling sorry for herself,
any type of pessimism.
I respect anybody who's decided to
just completely uproot their lives,
go to a place that's completely
unknown, and just start anew.
When I asked you what you
would like to learn more of,
you mentioned American.
- Yes.
- What brought that along?
Because I don't know anything about it.
I just know about burgers.
Uh-huh.
And I think it's important
to know a little bit more
because we live here.
- Yeah.
- My daughters were born here.
So why not?
One of my very favorite
things is meatloaf.
- Have you made meatloaf before?
- No.
[ANTONI] We're gonna make
Do you like ground meat?
- Yeah.

And it's something that I think
the girls could even help prepare.

really moist and, like, light-tasting.

cook in the oven afterwards.
Go ahead and put all of that
into the mix right over there.
This is lemon zest. It's gonna
add a little bit of brightness.
Coriander seed.
So it's cilantro from the plant.
- It's the seed from it.

We need a little heat.
- So I have some chili flakes.

[ANTONI] And there's nothing
more American than ketchup.

This is gonna help as a binder.

The mixing part is something I feel like
the girls can easily help with as well.

bit of salt. A little pepper.
And then some fresh parsley.
It's a little peppery, and it's
gonna add a little brightness.

I feel like parsley is
the American cilantro.

comes the messy part.
A bit of brown sugar.
So it's gonna be like
a nice caramelized crust
to have a bit of that sweetness.
And then a bit of ketchup as well.
