Death In Paradise (2011) s10e03 Episode Script

Series 10, Episode 3

1 You can take the boy from the country But you can't take the country from him You can lead the cow to the water WOMAN: Oh, wow, Gav, look at this.
Oh, God.
Well, here it is, home sweet home.
Yeah, not too shabby, I suppose.
It looks like summat out of a magazine.
You and Cherry are so lucky, Gav.
Oh, I can't believe you're both here! Oh, look at your tan! So jealous.
And you.
Come here, you big idiot.
Hey, I didn't fly 5,000 miles to get insulted.
So, listen, plan for today is - quick glass of bubbly and then, if you're up for it, we'll hit the beach.
Yeah.
I just bought a couple of Jet Skis if you want to take 'em for a test drive.
Oh, yeah, I'd be well up for that, mate.
Woohoo! Whoo! Hey, I think I've just died and gone to heaven.
Honestly, do you ever get used to living like this? I don't know.
Ask me again in ten years.
So, what about you two? How are things since the big win? Oh, moving out here was just what we needed.
Honestly, hon, me and Gav are rock solid.
DISTANT LAUGHTER AND CONVERSATION Quite a lot of mossies though.
Yeah, you get used to them.
It's funny.
She don't change, does she? Lady of the manor and all she surveys.
Er, did I hear my name mentioned? Only with the utmost love and respect, Ms Lotto.
Yeah, well, it better have been.
Right.
Who wants another glass before bed? Oh, yes, please.
Yeah? Gimme that.
Are the guests not up yet? They've already gone into town to check out the market.
Dan'll be back soon - we're booked in at this spa.
HE SIGHS I'm not sure I can do this for much longer, Cherry, pretending all the time.
I mean, it's a bloody farce.
Don't be like that, Gav.
I'm telling you, Craig, there was a tension.
Just summat that weren't right, do you know what I mean? Just seemed like same old Gavin and Cherry to me.
Hey, Dan, what do you think? LAUGHING: You look ridiculous.
Take 'em off.
HE CHUCKLES Right, nearly half past.
I'm gonna go.
All right, see you.
Thank you.
Bye.
Cherry, I'm back.
You ready? Cherry? Cherry? Oh, God.
Oh, God Cherry? Please! Please! Oh, God, Cherry Oh, God, no LINE RINGS Craig, get back here.
It's Cherry.
SOBBING: She's dead, Craig.
I think someone did it to her.
DOOR CLOSES FOOTSTEPS I justI just heard footsteps, Craig.
I think whoever did this is still here.
Dan, just get out of there now.
Get back here and we'll call the police.
OK, I'm going, I'm going.
Yeah, quick as you can, yeah? THUD AND CRASH Dan, what was that noise? Danielle? Love? Please! Tell me what's happening.
Speak to me! BOTTLE RATTLES Dan? Danielle! FADING OUT: Speak to me JP: Mrs Mackenzie? Dan? Dan, love, it's me.
Dan, sweetheart.
Wake up, love.
Mrs Mackenzie? Can you hear me OK? Dan? Dan, are you all right? Mrs Mackenzie? I'm Sergeant Hooper from Saint Marie Police.
Are you OK? GROANING: Yeah.
You had me so worried just now.
It's all right.
I'm OK.
Look, your husband said that you saw a body.
Are you up to showing me where? Yeah, OK.
She She's gone.
She was right there, I swear she was.
The missing body belongs to Cheryl Jackson, also known as Cherry.
She lives here alone with her husband, Gavin.
Now, the two witnesses are Craig and Danielle Mackenzie.
They are friends visiting over from England.
Snazzy villa! Mm.
Have they got a bob or two, these Jacksons? Eight million, to be precise, sir.
About a year back, they won the lottery back in the UK.
Really? Blimey, the lottery? You know, the odds of winning that are 45 million to one.
Statistically speaking, I've got more chance of being made a saint.
That's good to know, sir.
I wonder if there's ever been a Saint Neville.
So, where's the husband now? We're not sure.
His car was gone.
We've left a message on his phone.
OK.
After you, Sarge.
Thanks.
Good afternoon.
I'm Detective Inspector Neville Parker.
This is DS Florence Cassell.
I'm really sorry, but do you think you'd be OK to go over it one more time? OK? Yeah.
Um Yeah, I got back around half ten.
Cherry had organised for us to go to a spa, and that's when I seen her lying in the garden .
.
like she'd been dragged there.
Oh, God.
It was awful, just seeing her eyes just staring out like that.
Sorry.
Any visible signs of injury when you checked her? Yeah, there was, um .
.
no sign of a pulse Cherry? .
.
and she also had some red fingermarks on her neck.
FLORENCE: And whoever did it to her was still here? Yeah, I heard somebody in the house, so I made my way outside, and that's when I got hit on the back of the head.
There was an empty champagne bottle on the floor where we found her.
Next thing I remember is Craig and you, Sergeant, waking me up here.
GAVIN: Hello? Cherry? That's Gavin.
I should speak to him.
It's better that he hears it from me.
Thank you.
So, the killer knocked out Mrs Mackenzie so they could dispose of the body.
We'll need to start a search.
Hmm.
There's a guy we use who has a tracker dog.
I'll give him a call.
OK.
And we need to take a look at that crime scene.
JP, can you go door to door, see if the neighbours saw or heard anything? Sir.
Thanks.
Listen, buddy SPEECH FADES Definite signs of a disturbance, which suggests the victim was assaulted here and then dragged outside.
Sir? JP's right.
There's faint traces of a tyre track near the gate - assume it belongs to a car or a van.
But not enough to get a cast off? No.
Any cameras? It's pretty secluded down there.
So the killer was able to load the body into their vehicle unseen.
Which is what they must have been doing when Danielle came back and interrupted them.
Despite the odds, people do win, sir.
You just have to be lucky.
Yeah But where's the fun in that? It's pure chance.
Give me a pub quiz over a lottery any day of the week, something that challenges the brain power.
And what do we win in your quiz? A round of drinks on the house and a "10% off" voucher for Sunday lunch.
Wow.
I think I know which I'd rather have.
JP: Sir.
Yes, JP? So .
.
a neighbour heard the victim and her husband argue at about ten o'clock this morning.
CHERRY: There's no going back now.
We're over! Said that it sounded like Cherry was wanting a divorce.
I've had enough, right? I want a divorce.
And it's not the first time that's happened.
Apparently, they've been arguing quite a lot over the last few weeks.
Anything else from the witness? Yeah.
Once the argument had died down, he noticed Gavin leave the house at 10.
25 and drive away in his car.
That was only a few minutes before Danielle returned and found Cherry's body outside.
Yeah, I got back around half ten.
We need to talk to him.
And, JP, see if you can arrange the lab to check his car for traces of Cherry's body.
All right, sir.
Thanks.
GAVIN: Look, it's not been easy.
Moving to a foreign country, starting a new life - it's tough.
And I admit, it's caused some friction between us.
This morning, we were both hungover.
Tetchy.
Didn't take much to to light the touchpaper.
Where did you drive to when you left the house this morning? I don't recall.
You don't recall? You don't seriously think that I killed her, do you? Well, it's just Cherry was found dead minutes after you were seen leaving the house.
And we suspect whoever did it parked round the back of the property to move the body.
And now you can't remember where you went or what you did? You can see how this looks.
Actually, I'm sorry, I do remember.
I went to a cafe just a few minutes from here, down by Plage des Palmiers.
I went there, had a coffee - just to clear my head.
I forgot.
That's where I went.
Yeah, I know Mr Jackson.
Him was here this morning.
You sure he was here? Gavin Jackson? Comes in pretty often, normally with the rest of the local cycle club members.
What time was this? Half ten on the dot.
I noticed the time, cos them usually in closer to lunchtime.
But it was just Mr Jackson on his own today.
And what time did he leave? About 12, maybe just after.
You're absolutely positive he was here the whole time, between 10.
30 and 12? Sure.
Kept an eye on him, you know, cos you got to look after your regulars, right? It's impossible for him to have been in two places at once.
It can't have been Gavin that did it.
But then why was he acting so suspiciously? And why did he appear to pluck his alibi out of thin air? But he stayed at the cafe, so when on earth could he have disposed of the body? Let's see what forensics find in his car.
JP: So, I checked the back gate for prints, and the only set that I could get a match for were Gavin's.
Also, the dog handler could only confirm what we already suspected - the scent went cold down by the track at the back of the house.
So it does look like the body was loaded into a vehicle before being driven away, even if we have no idea where it was taken.
Sir, I think Gavin was telling the truth about finding it hard to settle on the island, certainly for Cherry.
Oh, yeah? I've been through her diary and mobile phone contacts.
Cherry really didn't know many people here.
No close friends to speak of? Well, if she was living a life of isolation, then that leaves suspects thin on the ground.
The only people she had any history with are these three - Gavin the husband Who we've already ruled out.
Yeah.
And then her friends Craig and Danielle.
What do we know about these two? Both born and raised in the north of England .
.
in Old-ham? Oldham, my neck of the woods.
Been married 12 years.
Two kids.
Craig works as a delivery driver and Danielle manages a hair salon.
Do we know how they became acquainted with the Jacksons? It seems they were next-door neighbours for about eight years.
So before Gavin and Cherry hit the jackpot and moved out here.
JP, what were their movements on the morning of the murder? OK Right, so they'd been shopping here, in Honore.
Danielle got a taxi back to the villa, arriving at half past ten to find Cherry dead.
Craig stayed in town having a drink in Ziggy's Bar until he got a call from his wife about Cherry.
Love? Which means neither of them could have killed Cherry either.
So, then, who did? Yeah.
And where's the body? Good evening, Commissioner.
Inspector, I thought I'd come and break the good news.
Marlon here has passed his initial two-week basic police training.
It's crazy, man.
I've never passed anything in my life.
Well, to be honest, I never really sat an exam either, so Good for you.
Congratulations.
Yes, well done.
JP: Mm.
All of which means, as of tomorrow, Trainee Officer Pryce is the latest addition to your team, on a probationary basis.
Oh, we all look forward to working with you.
Don't we? Absolutely.
Mm.
MARLON: Not as much as I'm looking forward to working with my old pal, Sergeant Hooper.
I believe that Trainee Officer Pryce will have a suspected murder to get his teeth into.
That's right.
Seriously? I got a murder to investigate on my first day? That's so cool, man.
Well, that's not quite the appropriate language, but we can iron out those kinks as we go along, can't we, JP? Let's hope so.
Um, if you will all excuse us, I'd like a word in private with DS Cassell.
Oh.
NEVILLE: Anyone for a beer at Catherine's? JP: Thanks, but I'm gonna head home.
Sir? Hmm.
I am aware that tomorrow is the anniversary and it's your first time on the island since you lost Patrice.
If you need some time to yourself No, I think all I want to do is focus on my work and just keep myself busy.
Whatever you think is best.
I hope it goes without saying, but .
.
I'm here if you need me.
Thank you, sir.
Have a good evening.
I don't know if I can stay here, Craig.
I think we should get a hotel.
What are you on about? I think Gavin did it.
I think he killed Cherry.
That's crazy, love.
All these things that I know about 'em, about Gavin and Cherry, things I've not told you.
DOOR CLOSES Morning! Morning, sir.
All good? All good, yeah.
ENGINE STARTS I'm just not quite sure what I'm supposed to be listening for.
I need to know what's going on in there, JP.
I'm a week overdue, and I want to know if those babies are thinking of showing themselves any time soon.
Right.
Yeah, OK, of course.
CLEARS THROA OK, what exactly does that sound like, do you think? Oh, whoa, whoa, what you doing down there, man? STAMMERING: She's not giving birth, is she? Because I did not sign up for all of that.
No, she's not, Marlon.
This is Rosey, my wife.
Oh, right.
And relax.
Seems these babies are going nowhere.
It's nice to meet you, Mrs Hooper.
You know, pregnancy really suits you.
You've got a real glow about you, you know? Nice to meet you too, Marlon.
Right.
I'm going to go see Catherine, see if she's got any spicy curry - maybe that'll get 'em moving.
OK.
Good luck.
All right.
You're late.
It's nine o'clock.
Oh, right.
Well, I thought there was an "8.
30 for 9.
30" kind of vibe you had going on here.
No, Marlon, it's an "8.
30 for 8.
30" kind of vibe.
All right.
Well, note to self.
Sit.
HE SIGHS Look, Marlon, I get that you aren't here because you want to be here.
And I see that you're only doing this scheme to keep yourself out of prison.
And I can't particularly say that I'm thrilled that, well, my new partner is you, but I reckon we're both grown-ups, so how about we put the past behind us and make a fresh start of it? Look, JP, I got to make it work, so Yeah.
I'm on your side, all right? All right.
PHONE RINGS Want to take your first call? Oh, yeah, sure thing.
CLEARS THROA Yo, wha gwan? Officer Pryce Saint Marie Police.
Sergeant Hooper speaking.
All right.
Well, we'll be right there.
Sorry.
Sir, it sounds like the victim's body has turned up down at the harbour.
OK, we'll meet you there.
All right.
Do I have to get in this thing? Yeah, you don't have a choice.
Sergeant Hooper, you're doing nothing for my reputation right now.
Argh! JP GRUNTS WHISPERS: Come on, man.
Argh.
HE SUCKS TEETH Any time now, Sergeant.
It's fine.
It's fine.
It's fine.
Ready when you are, Sergeant.
NEVILLE: We'll have to get the husband down to do a positive identification, but I think we can safely say that this is our victim.
Poor woman.
Her face looks so pale.
You know, Marlon, why don't you help me set up the cordon over there, yeah? Victim's body was found tangled in a fishing net about a mile out to sea.
Fishermen who found her said that the currents here are too weak to have carried it that far on their own.
So whoever disposed of the body did so using a boat.
Danielle was right about there being fingermarks on her neck.
Look.
Possible cause of death is strangulation.
And one of her earrings is missing.
Huh.
Did we find the other earring at the crime scene yesterday? No, sir.
Huh.
In the victim's left pocket was a single white shoelace.
What was she wearing on her feet yesterday? Do we know? Yes, sandals, according to Gavin.
Why does she have a single white shoelace in her pocket? Hmm.
So, whoever killed her drove her body from the crime scene down here to the harbour before using a boat to dump it in the sea.
Which means they either own a boat or borrowed one.
We'll get JP and Marlon to ask around.
I've been going through the victim's emails, and the most striking thing is there was no communication between Danielle and Cherry for close to a year.
Really? Yep.
But I thought they were best friends.
Exactly.
And what about her phone records? I just checked.
Same thing - no contact for a year, until the first phone call between them, which was only about a month ago.
But this is where it gets really interesting.
The last email that was sent to Cherry in January 2020, before they stopped communicating, was from Craig.
And what does it say? "We have turned to you for help.
"And your refusal to even consider it feels like "we've been stabbed in the back.
"While all I feel is anger, Danielle is left heartbroken.
"You both deserve to rot in hell for this.
" Not a man to mince your words, are you, Craig? We did a little digging to see what was happening in your lives round this time.
And it turned out that you had to declare your then-business bankrupt to the tune of £120,000.
Not long after your friends had just won the lottery, right? Cherry refused to bail you out, didn't she? Eight years of friendship down the pan.
For what? A piddling 120 grand? And they're sitting there with eight million? It must have been very upsetting.
It was Dan who it hit the hardest.
Her and Cherry were so close.
It just got to her, stressed her out.
She stopped sleeping, suffered from insomnia Still struggles with it, even now.
And yet here you are, holidaying with the very people who let you down.
I know how it looks, but .
.
that's why Cherry rang Danielle a month ago - to apologise.
She invited us out here so she could try and make up for it all.
It's a pretty toxic email, Mr Mackenzie.
Are you absolutely sure you were willing to forgive and forget? If you're asking me whether I had a motive, then .
.
yeah, I did.
But in case you didn't notice, I was in a bar on the other side of town when it happened.
With witnesses.
So if it was me who killed Cherry, how the hell did I do it? JP: OK, I'll see you later.
All right.
Oh, hey, Sarge.
I was just grabbing some lunch.
You know, I'm not used to early mornings, so I kind of missed breakfast.
Yes, Marlon.
But do you think maybe you should've asked me permission before you break for lunch? Right, OK.
Lesson learned, Sarge.
Lesson learned.
Mm! This place does the best swordfish fritters! I'm coming here every day for lunch.
You OK, Sarge? You look like you're getting all worked up, like somebody's annoyed you.
Has somebody annoyed you, Sarge? Marlon We're in the middle of a murder case.
We're still trying to find the boat that was used to dump our victim's body.
Oh, yeah, I know.
I already know that.
What? Yeah.
I know the name of the boat that dumped the body at sea.
It's, um .
.
Caribbean Princess.
It was like the very first guy I spoke to told me.
What are the chances of that, eh? Oh! Just Oh! Marlon spoke to a couple of guys who were fishing off the shore in the early hours of this morning.
They saw a boat in the distance, but it was dark, so they reckoned whoever it was hadn't seen them.
Then what happened? Well, they saw somebody come out of the cabin and lift something heavy over the edge and into the water.
And this is the same boat they saw? Caribbean Princess.
Do we know who owns it? Well, it's not registered on this island, but this mooring's available to all visitors.
And no-one's seen anyone on board since, or anyone coming and going from it? Locked.
JP, my bag, please.
And one of her earrings is missing.
Cherry's missing earring.
This boat was definitely used to dump her body.
Yeah.
JP, can you and Marlon notify the harbour authorities? This boat is now officially a crime scene.
Yes, sir.
We're also going to need a warrant to get access to that cabin and search it.
Marlon, your first lead.
Well done.
Thanks.
Mrs Mackenzie, what can we do for you? Some things that you need to know about Cherry and Gavin.
All Cherry's ever wanted is kids, since I've known her, but it couldn't happen for her and Gav.
Just was never going to work - she wasn't made for having children, if you get me.
I think that's the reason why she didn't lend us the money that we wanted.
But what does this have to do with the murder? Are you suggesting Gavin did it? When Cherry rang saying she wanted me and Craig to come and visit, I knew things had got worse.
In what way? I justI just knew she wasn't herself.
And what about when you got here? That first evening, me and Cherry were getting ready in the bedroom He's changed, Dan, he He only cares about the money.
He'd do anything to take all of it.
Anything.
I tried to get her to explain what she meant, but when she finally calmed down, she just clammed up.
And when she said, "He'd do anything" .
.
do you think she meant murder? I don't know.
Maybe.
I just remember the look in her eyes.
She was really scared.
So, once again, the spotlight falls on Cherry's husband, Gavin.
But we know he can't be the killer.
Melea Lewis verified he was at her cafe the exact same time the killer was interrupted by Danielle.
THUD But he was witnessed having an argument with Cherry on the morning of her murder.
There's no going back now! And he was seen leaving the house only minutes before Danielle returned and discovered Cherry's body.
I mean .
.
it has to be him.
Except it can't be.
HE SIGHS Hey, it's me.
I know we said we wouldn't make contact while the investigation is going on, but .
.
I think we need to talk.
None of Cherry's shoes at the house were missing a lace, were they? No, I don't think so.
Hmm Why was that lace on her body? So, fancy a drink at Catherine's tonight? We could work out the next thing to tick off my Caribbean to-do list tonight.
Tonight's maybe not good for me, but maybe another time? Sure.
It was just an idea.
Oh, JP, how'd you get on at the courthouse? The clerk reckons we should have the search warrant by the morning.
That damn bike nearly broke down again on the way back.
I'm going to get Marlon to take it to the garage.
All right, tell Winston we need it back first thing.
Here's $80 - should be more than enough.
Totally.
No problem.
You can trust me.
Right.
Well, I need to get back to Rosey.
Look, Marlon, please make sure it's at the garage before it closes, yes? Yeah, no worries, man.
Go and see that beautiful wife of yours.
HE SUCKS TEETH All right.
Cassius, my man.
It's Marlon.
Yeah, yeah, I'm really good.
I'm really good.
Listen, any chance I could use your tool kit? I've got a fewrepairs I need to do, you know? Officially, the next task is to learn more about Saint Marie's history, and a visit to the island's museums does rather appeal.
I used to love going to museums when I was a kid.
I'd always buy a souvenir pencil from the gift shop.
I amassed quite a collection, actually - close to 100.
Hey, I think I've got some photos.
Oh.
I do worry that visiting the local museums might be a bit Boring? Well, I was going to say touristy.
I feel like maybe I'm not really embracing the Caribbean spirit.
You know what you should do? You should pick up bachata dancing.
What's bachata dancing? Oh, comes from the Dominican Republic.
It's very sexy and incredibly sensual.
I don't really think I can do sexy, Catherine, or sensual.
Certainly not both at the same time.
I could be your dance partner.
I found my pictures of the pencils.
As you can see, I've categorised them into groups of five.
Oh.
Fascinant.
Oh, I meant to ask, how was Florence today? Must have been hard for her, no? How do you mean? It's the anniversary.
Two years ago, she lost her fiance, Patrice.
I thought she would have mentioned it.
No, she never said anything.
Excuse me, I'm looking for Florence.
Thank you.
HE CLEARS THROA Sir? What are you doing here? I had no idea what today was, and I feel awful about not saying anything.
So I just came to, uh, pay my respects .
.
say I'm really sorry for what happened.
Um, yeah Uh I'll leave you to your thoughts.
Would you .
.
stay a moment? Um, yeah.
Yeah, sure.
You know, I've been standing here, thinking how I can begin looking forward, how I can show that I'm ready to do that.
I think .
.
maybe I need to say goodbye to the things that hold me back.
Say goodbye? Yes.
Throw it in the sea, like a ritual.
That's pretty extreme, Florence.
But perhaps that's what I need.
Except something inside is stopping me.
I could do it for you, if you like.
Would you? Well, only if you really, really wanted me to.
Yeah.
Yeah, OK.
I guess sometimes the only thing to do is rip the plaster off.
SHE GASPS Oh, my God, you did it.
What? You told me to! Yes, but I didn't think you actually would! Was it too soon? Yes, maybe.
Yes.
I didn't even think I didn't think you It's lucky I didn't do it, then, isn't it? It was just a coin, Florence.
The old switcheroo.
I don't think you can just rip the plaster off when you're letting someone go.
But now that you know what it feels like to throw that away .
.
maybe doing something less extreme will feel easier.
Yeah, I think I'll put it in a box, in a drawer.
Yeah.
That was a cheeky move.
Well You know JP: I hear what you're saying, Mr Goolaman, and I promise you we'll be there as soon as we can, but we are in the middle of a murder case right now OK, well, you have a good day, Mr LINE BEEPS HE SUCKS TEETH You know, Eldrick Goolaman is the bane of my life.
And who is Eldrick Goolaman? He's a grumpy old goat, that's who he is.
He owns a watermelon farm on the north side of the island, always complaining about one thing or the other.
Today it's fly-tipping on the beach near his house.
Do you want to go check it out? No, no, no.
We have a boat to search and dust for prints.
All right? Mr Goolaman can wait.
So, did Winston get the bike fixed? Uh, yeah.
Yeah.
He said it was something to do with the crankshaft, I don't know.
But it worked fine when I picked it up.
And how much was it? Get any change from the $80? Actually, er, no.
No, it was exactly $80.
Oh, really? Well, lucky I gave you the right amount, then.
Ho! Yes.
Wasn't it just? Morning, sir.
Morning.
So, the postmortem is in.
It confirms Cherry died of asphyxiation due to strangulation.
And because the body was in the water for some time, it's hard to get a specific time of death.
Hmm.
How did you get on over at the lab with Gavin Jackson's car? Well, we found traces of DNA fibres and hairs from the victim, but nothing to prove that they were deposited after she was murdered.
That said, I did find something of interest in the glove compartment.
This guidebook.
On first glance, nothing of relevance or interest to our case.
But if you take a quick flick through, there was this.
But Cherry wasn't pregnant.
It would have been picked up in the postmortem.
So whose baby is it? I hear congratulations are in order.
The hospital confirmed the baby's yours.
MELEA: We were just friends, first of all.
Got to chatting when he come in the caf, kind of hit it off.
Then Gavin starts staying on after I close up for the day.
So you grew close, the two of you? We fell in love.
And when you both found out you were pregnant, what was the plan? Did Cherry know? We were told she asked for a divorce the morning of the murder.
Was this why? Gavin told her a few days ago, but he thinks she already worked it out.
She took it badly, I assume.
Having failed to conceive for years with the man she loved, him running off and having a baby with another woman - that must've hurt.
Gavin wanted them to agree to an amicable parting, an equal split of everything.
But Cherry said she'd fight him for every penny.
And how did Gavin take that? She got under his skin, you know, got him all riled up.
Melea, when we first questioned you, you covered up your relationship with Gavin Jackson.
Were there any other lies you told us that day? Like his alibi? Was Mr Jackson really here at 10.
30 on the morning of the murder? He phoned me around lunchtime, told me what happened and that you'd be paying me a visit.
The police are on their way.
Asked me to lie.
I need you to tell them I was at your cafe this morning around 10.
30.
But him swore he didn't kill Cherry.
Melea, I promise, everything's going to be all right.
I swear to you, I'll make good for you and the baby, OK? Gavin Jackson.
I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Cheryl Jackson.
I'll get you a glass of water.
Any fingerprints on the boat? Whole thing had been cleaned up real good.
And it was completely empty inside - nothing in there at all.
JP not around? He had to go deal with some fly-tipping over at Canary Beach - some old guy called Mr Goolaman was giving him hassle about it.
Well, how do you fancy observing your first-ever suspect interview? Oh, definitely, sir.
Come on.
HE CLEARS THROA Marlon WHISPERING: When I said observe, I meant to observe from a distance.
Oh.
My bad, sir.
Sorry.
Sorry.
So, Mr Jackson, as I believe you're now aware, Melea Lewis has confirmed that you were not at her cafe from 10.
30 to midday on the morning of the murder.
You want to tell us where you were during that period? I just went for a drive to clear my head after the argument that I'd had with Cherry.
Anywhere someone might have seen you? Why did you ask Melea Lewis to lie and give you a false alibi? Cos I were panicky.
I already knew that you was looking at me as though I'd done it, because of the argument that we'd had that morning, I just thought that you'd move on and look at someone else if I gave you an alibi.
You also kept from us the fact you'd been having an affair and were about to divorce Cherry.
Could have been costly for you, that.
PHONE RINGS Course, she won't see a penny now, will she? Not now that she's dead.
Honore Police station.
Please, just listen to me.
Whatever was wrong between me and Cherry, I would never kill her.
Sir.
It's JP.
Says it's important.
I'm going to have to take you back to the cells, Mr Jackson.
Yes, JP? Sir, I'm up at the Canary Beach, and initially I thought that it was just the usual rubbish that washes up on shore.
But there's a whole load of women's clothes that's been dumped at sea.
Right? Now, one of the bags didn't split, so I opened it up, and JP CHUCKLES .
.
there's a crazy amount of cash in here, sir, and a passport.
But check this - it has a photo of Cherry Jackson inside.
Really? Mm-hm.
With a different name on it.
Caroline Fisher.
Caroline Fisher? Inspector! Where is Sergeant Hooper? It seems he's required.
Oh, my goodness.
Is it happening? I think it's really happening.
I was passing when I saw Mrs Hooper in need of assistance.
ROSEY: Is JP not here? Where is he?! JP, leave everything that's on the beach.
We'll sort it.
You need to get yourself over to the hospital right now.
It's baby time.
ROSEY GROANS I'm sorry, Mr Goolaman, but my wife's going into labour and I really need to be there.
OK.
OK.
Breathe.
HE BREATHES FORCEFULLY OK.
OK.
ENGINE SPUTTERS No.
No, no, no, no, no.
No! Come on! HE GRUNTS Oh! Hey, Mr Goolaman! Stop.
Wait for me! Contractions are three minutes apart, so I think it won't be long.
Where's JP? I need to see JP.
Get him here now! Um, yeah, let me get you an ETA on that.
JP: Yeah, there's been a bit of a minor delay, but I'll be there as soon as I can, OK? Mr Goolaman, does this thing go any faster?! ROSEY: A hiccup? Why is there a hiccup? I don't need hiccups right now.
NEVILLE: Oh, did I say a hiccup? There's no hiccup.
JP's going to be here any minute.
Why is she not letting go of my hand, sir? It really hurts! Best you just go with it.
Oh, oh! Only the husband from here.
MARLON SIGHS ROSEY GASPS OK, Mrs Hooper, I really think you should let go of my hand now cos I'm not the father, you see.
Argh! Just stop talking! OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, I'll stop talking.
Thank you very much, Mr Goolaman! I owe you one.
Uh, uh Maternity ward? Has it happened yet? Not yet, but I think it's about to.
ROSEY MOANS LOUDLY Oh, boy.
Go on.
HE CLEARS THROA ROSEY MOANS OK, just keep breathing now, OK? Marlon, what the?! Oh BOTH: Thank God you're here, JP.
When this is over, we're going to have words about that bike, OK? Hey.
Oh! OK.
Oh.
Everybody Rosey's just given birth to two little girls.
Ha! Mother and babies are doing really well.
I'm so pleased for you and Rosey.
Congratulations.
Yeah, good on you both.
Oh, it's just the most amazing thing ever.
You know, like seeing a new life come into the world, two new lives.
A new life? Is that what you just said? A new life coming into the world? Yes, sir.
That's what I said.
Yeah, there was no sign of a pulse.
Well, if that's what we're dealing with, then Oh, God.
.
.
then everything we think we know is THUD .
.
and can only be wrong, then.
It has a photo of Cherry Jackson inside with a different name on it.
HE GASPS AND LAUGHS JP, I'm sorry.
I know you're pretty tied up, but I don't suppose you've got that passport that you found? Uh, yeah.
Yeah, sure, sir.
Yes! Have you worked it all out, sir? Yes, nearly.
I know exactly what happened.
I know how Cherry Jackson was murdered.
I know how and when her body was disposed of.
And I know why all our suspects have alibis.
The only thing I don't know is which one of them actually did it.
But I have a feeling this is going to help us answer that question.
HE CHUCKLES It's going to be all right.
Good afternoon, everyone.
Thank you all for being here.
Two days ago, Cherry Jackson was murdered and her body was moved to a boat down in Honore Harbour.
Now, since you all have alibis for the time at which Danielle was knocked out and the body was disposed of, that means none of you could have done it.
And now that we know the truth of what happened, I can confirm that, in fact, none of you did do it.
CRAIG: What? Because the person who moved Cherry Jackson's body was none other than Cherry Jackson herself.
Feeling betrayed and devastated by the news that her husband was about to have a baby with another woman, Cherry wanted to enact revenge.
If Gavin and Melea were going to have the one and only thing that Cherry wanted in life, a family Then Cherry decided she was going to do whatever it takes to deny them the happiness that would bring.
So she came up with a plan.
A plan to not only potentially destroy your and Melea's life, Gavin, but would also give her the chance to escape her own sadness in life - to run away and start again.
Let's go back to the beginning of that day, because everything that happened that morning was planned to a to make it look like you, Gavin, murdered your wife.
First, Cherry instigated an argument with him, loud enough for the neighbours to hear.
Antagonising Gavin to such an extent that he had no choice but to storm off and clear his head, leaving Cherry free to set the stage to make it look like he'd murdered her.
I can't be exactly sure, but I assume she used some sort of make-up to give the appearance of red fingermarks on her neck.
And then she came out to the garden, knowing that within minutes you, Danielle, would return.
We found this shoelace in her pocket when we recovered the body.
It's been bothering me ever since.
Why was it there? And then I realised.
She used it as a tourniquet on her arm to stop the blood flowing.
So that when you found her, Danielle, you'd check her pulse, find there wasn't one and assume the worst.
Oh, my God! But Cherry wasn't dead.
And when you came inside to call Craig, she followed you in and proceeded to knock you unconscious.
Danielle? Then Cherry made her exit out the back of the garden, leaving the gate wide open.
By the time the police arrived, it would look as though the killer had disposed of the body.
We found a trace of a tyre track outside the gate.
We presumed it was the killer's car.
But now we believe that it was Cherry's own getaway vehicle, a moped or a motorbike.
Which she used to get herself to the boat she had acquired, where she had already placed some clothes and a fake passport, ready to leave the island and her old life for good.
And in theory, if that had happened, then everyone would assume that you, Gavin, murdered your wife and hid her body.
Now, I can't be sure whether you would have been charged or not, but it would have hung over you and your family for the rest of your life, which, I guess, is exactly what Cherry wanted - to make sure that you, Melea and your child would not live happily ever after.
Hang on.
Sorry.
She did die, right? Cherry's body was found.
Someone did murder her.
Someone did, Craig, you're absolutely right.
I'm sorry to have to tell you that .
.
it was your wife Danielle who murdered Cherry.
What? That's madness.
You think Dan did it? You've got a screw loose, Detective.
If you didn't kill Cherry, Mrs Mackenzie, can you explain why your fingerprints are all over this passport? Cherry's fake passport.
It's my belief that Cherry's plan was to lie low in the boat for the rest of the day and then leave the island under cover of darkness.
We knew that Cherry's body had been on the boat, but now we believe that she was killed there, not earlier in the morning here at the house, as we originally suspected.
So the killer must have been in Honore Harbour that night.
Craig, you mentioned how Danielle suffers from insomnia when she's stressed.
She stopped sleeping, suffered from insomnia And that night when you both moved into the hotel, you'd been knocked unconscious, you thought you'd found your friend dead I think you couldn't sleep, Danielle.
You went for a walk.
You needed some air.
Danielle, we believe you walked down to the harbour.
And that's when you saw her - Cherry.
I imagine you were confused, having genuinely believed she was dead.
And that confusion quickly turned to anger.
In that instant, you realised that your best friend, who'd already betrayed you once in life, had done it again.
In that exact moment, you suddenly understood the one and only reason why she'd invited you to this island.
It was to be a witness to her own fake murder that morning so you could confirm to the police she was dead.
Cherry used you and she betrayed you.
And you must have felt that you meant nothing to her.
You lying cow! I can explain.
Please explain! Why would you do that, Cherry? Why would you lie? I don't understand! Why would you lie? Why would you do that? Why would you bring me over here and do that? Why would you do that? I don't understand! I saw red.
I was just so angry at what she'd done.
SHE SOBS SOFTLY I didn't mean to kill her.
With the body lying there, you headed further out to sea before throwing it over the side.
You then thoroughly cleansed the boat of any evidence that you'd been there.
Any fingerprints on the boat? Whole thing had been cleaned up real good.
You then bagged up the rest of her clothes and the fake passport and threw those over the side too.
I assume you thought that if the boat was found there'd be no evidence of Cherry or her plans to disappear.
Unfortunately for you, the sea then played its part and washed them ashore, revealing your one oversight, which is how we found your fingerprints on Cherry's fake passport and why we know that it can only have been you that killed her.
I'm so sorry.
You idiot, Dan.
You bloody idiot.
SHE SNIFFS I'll make the arrest.
I love you.
I'm so sorry.
SHE SOBS Do carry on.
It's Trainee Officer Pryce I want to see.
If you want to get in the car.
Are we going on a road trip, sir? We're going to the courthouse, where you will be processed before being taken to prison.
Sorry, what did you say? Sergeant Hooper updated me on your little scam with the motorbike.
Come on, what do you take me for? I wouldn't scam a fellow officer.
Marlon, we spoke to Winston at the garage.
We know you pocketed the money and did a bodge job trying to fix it yourself.
All of which has made it abundantly clear to me you're not fit to continue as a trainee officer.
Please, Commissioner Patterson, just give me one more chance.
I'm begging you.
I don't want to go inside.
Why should I do that? Now, umget in the car.
Whoa, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Double or quits.
I beg your pardon? Double or quits.
Give me one more chance to prove I'm the right guy for this, and if I let you down again, I'll serve double my sentence.
Marlon, if I agree to this and you make one more slip-up, not only will your sentence be twice as long, there'll be no chance of early release.
Understand? HE SIGHS All right.
You drive a hard bargain, you know, Commissioner.
Well, that'sjust how I roll.
JP: This one's called Molly.
And this little one is Bethany.
Oh, such perfect names.
Yeah, we named them after our grandmothers.
And I have to say, you already both look like natural parents.
All right, let's wet those babies' heads.
Sir? Thank you.
There you go, Rosey.
CATHERINE: Well, then, to Molly and Bethany.
NEVILLE: To Molly and Bethany.
Oh, lovely names.
Yes.
MARLON: Hello, everybody.
Mrs Hooper, Sergeant Hooper, congratulations.
I, uh I got this for the babies.
I couldn't afford anything special, I'm afraid, but, uh, it's not stolen.
So that's good, right? Yeah.
Thank you, Marlon.
Yeah, thanks, man.
Appreciate it.
Do you want to hold them? Oh, yes! JP: Sir? Sarge? I-I I'll watch, I'll watch.
All right.
This beautiful thing.
OK.
OK.
All right.
Oh You look happy.
Yeah, I am.
It's new life - it has that effect.
Reminds us why we're here.
Yeah.
Sir, are you going to cry? Me? What? No.
No! What, cos-cos of a baby? Don't be silly.
I got something in my eye, I think.
SHE LAUGHS Shut up.
Welcome to St Francis, Mr? Parker, Neville Parker.
I hear we have the pleasure of your company for the night.
I'm afraid you have.
Everything all right, Mr Parker? Something tells me it's got your nose twitching.
Glad to hear you're going the extra mile, Trainee Officer Pryce.
Why is there a priest in our cells? Cos I arrested him.
I didn't want the Commissioner to think any less of me than he already does.
I know the Commissioner isn't your biggest fan, but he understands that you were ill.
CRASH Oh, my neck Inspector, what have you done to my neck?
