Death In Paradise (2011) s10e08 Episode Script

Series 10, Episode 8

1 Berrow-berry leaves Finally took to the soil Here, smell.
Mmm! It's like citrus and liquorice.
Has genuine anti-ageing properties.
Or so my grandma used to say.
90 years old when she passed, and not a wrinkle on her face.
You know how you don't like surprises? First stall I ever opened was right here.
Eight in the morning till eight at night, then I'd stay up late making product for the next day.
Look how far we've come, Emmet.
Not we.
You.
You might not have been there from the start, but Fallen Tree would not be where it is today without you.
Thanks.
Gardenia! Shares in your company? I can't accept this.
It's too much.
You are my clearest friend, Emmet.
I want you to know that.
This is all too much, really.
Actually, Emmet, I'd say you've got off somewhat lightly.
Yeah, if Mama had her way, this was going to be full-on party time with caterers and a disco.
But, as my husband wisely pointed out, we thought you'd prefer something a little less noisy.
This is just perfect.
I appreciate it.
I appreciate everything you've done for me.
Oh, Emmet.
To Emmet.
Yes.
Yes, to Emmet.
To you.
Cheers.
Thank you.
Sir, this is a victim statement for the burglary up near Port Royal.
Oh, thanks, Jp.
Morning, sir.
Can I help you? There's There's blood on your shirt.
ls everything all right? Has there been an accident? I think I think I I think I've killed her.
How about I put that gun somewhere safe? All right.
Can you tell us your name? Emmet Peterson.
I'm DI Neville Parker.
Andyou say you think you killed someone? She was my clearest friend.
And who is that? Gardenia.
Gardenia Dijon.
You know her? Yes.
She's a local businesswoman.
She founded Fallen Tree — it's a cosmetic company on the island.
And where was this? At her home.
I know it.
Do you want me to head over there, sir? OK, yes.
And, er, call an ambulance.
Emmet, would you like to take a seat? Can you talk us through what happened? That's just it.
I can't remember.
Not seen Deena since she got up, around half six.
And this is where she came? Oh, yes, she always does her yoga down here.
Oh, God! Please, no! I got up this morning.
Made breakfast.
That's all I know for sure.
Next thing I woke up on the ground.
In the garden.
Felt something heavy in my hand, so I sat up.
I saw her.
Gardenia.
Lying there, dead.
I saw the blood on my shirt and realised what I'd done.
But you can't actually remember firing the gun? No.
Does the gun belong to you? Do you know how you came by it? No.
But I know it was me that fired it.
I killed her.
I can feel it in me.
Emmet if you did do this why? I don't know.
Oh, my head.
Does it hurt? It aches real bad.
There's blood, sir.
Looks like he's taken a knock or something.
I should get him to hospital.
Er, yeah.
OK.
Until we recover the bullet, we can't say for sure, but the gun Mr Peterson was holding was a .
38 calibre.
The entry wound appears to be the same size.
Was she doing exercise down here? Mrs Dijon did yoga every morning.
Her husband says that she got up at 6.
30 and that was the last time he saw her.
Anyone hear the gunshot? No.
He says that he went back to sleep for another hour or so.
Same with the daughter, Cassie.
She said that the first time she heard about this was when we showed up.
Gunshot wasn't heard by any of the victim's family.
But this is a private, secure ground, sir.
There's no signs of an intruder.
Yeah, it's pretty remote out here.
Not much chance of a passing witness either.
What's that doing here? A red crayon.
How Old's the daughter? Early twenties.
Not likely to be hers, then.
Maybe they have friends with kids.
Yeah, maybe.
Should probably still bag it up anyway.
It makes no sense.
Mum and Emmet, they've worked together, they've been best friends for, like, 30 years.
Had they been arguing recently? Fallen out over anything? I mean, it was only last night we were all celebrating together.
Mum wanted to reward Emmet for his loyalty to the company and to her personally, so she gave him shares.
A 30% stake in Fallen Tree.
What is Emmet's role, exactly? He's a sort of advisor.
Helps Deene find new ingredients for her products.
He's a walking encyclopaedia on that kind of stuff.
Well, she says the company would have gone bust without him.
Hmm.
Oh, I almost forgot.
I found this at the crime scene.
You found a crayon? I was just wondering if you might have any idea what it was doing there.
Not had any kids visiting recently? No.
Wellit's probably nothing.
Inspector, what happens now? To Emmet, I mean.
Well, we'll have to talk to him some more.
The doctor said Mr Peterson took a serious blow to the head.
Any idea what caused it? No.
But as a result, he's suffering from post-traumatic amnesia.
That's why he has no memory of what happened.
Did the doctor say when it might come back? Within the week, he said.
But could be hours, could be days.
Sodo we arrest him, as he claims he did it? I don't think we have a choice.
We will need to take your clothes as evidence.
I'll bring you something to change into.
Huh.
Fascinating story of how Gardenia built up her company from nothing.
When she was 17, the family farm was destroyed in a hurricane.
No other money coming in, so she gathered up all the coconuts that had fallen during the storm and used them to make her grandma's home-made moisturising recipe.
And now it sells all over the Caribbean.
People love her product.
I use it.
Yeah, Rosey swears by Fallen Tree.
She's always trying to get me to use it.
She's not wrong there, Sarge.
The sooner you start moisturising, the better.
OK, what's that supposed to mean? Once you hit middle age, that skin is not going to keep itself young.
I am not hitting middle age, Marlon, thank you very much.
Commissioner! Good evening.
Inspector.
I wanted you to know that a press release has been issued to the local news teams, which may bring some attention your way.
Understood.
And what of our suspect? Has he remembered anything of what happened? No, not yet, sir.
How do you intend to proceed? We've arrested him, which gives us 48 hours before we have to charge him.
We're going to use that time to work out exactly what happened, whether it was, in fact, Emmet Peterson that killed Mrs Dijon.
There's a chance he didn't? The fact that he has no motive that he or the family can think of, sir, it's odd.
Why would a man suddenly, out of the blue, kill his best friend for no reason? And if he did it, he has no idea how he got the gun.
Oh, and curiously, there wasthis.
A crayon.
I found it on the floor at the crime scene.
And in what way might a child's crayon help solve this murder? Obviously, this is not the only lead we're pursuing.
Some might say it's hardly a lead at all, Inspector.
Goodnight, sir.
Goodnight.
Sergeant Hooper, I wondered if you'd come to any decision regarding the job offer.
I'm still weighing it up, sir.
Sorry.
Just let me know when you know.
I'll need time to find a replacement.
I will do, sir.
You'll be first to know.
Catherine! Two beers, please.
So tell me, how have things been while I was away with Mammy? Yeah, you know, all right.
Any developments to report? Between you and, er Oh, no, no, nothing to report, Catherine.
In fact, I decided we should probably try and keep a bit of distance between us.
Although that proved to be a bit trickier than I thought it would.
And why did you decide to do that? Florence is a colleague.
More than that, actually.
She's a good friend.
I don't want to spoil that.
The English.
So very good at making excuses.
It's not an excuse.
Isn't it? I just don't want you to miss your moment, Neville.
That's all.
Excuse me.
Take ca re.
Friend of yours? Oh, he's an old school friend.
Haven't seen him for years.
He's been working abroad.
Butyeah, it was nice to see him.
.
.
even drive them away.
If you're thinking of telling someone you've known for a while that you have feelings for them, then timing is everything.
According to The Love Demon, timing is key in this venture.
So choose your moment carefully.
Perhaps when you've both had a drink and are feeling relaxed.
Ideal conditions require an air of tranquillity.
Alcohol consumption may be key.
Morning, sir! Er, morning, Florence! Er, come through.
Just out here.
Hi.
Were you talking to yourself? Just, er, thinking out loud.
Just forming some ideas about the case.
So postmortem and lab results are in.
Gardenia Dijon died from a cardiac arrest caused by loss of blood.
Yeah.
Time of death? Estimated between half six and half seven.
"Blood spatter and gunshot residue found on Mr Peterson's shirt "are consistent with him having fired the gun at close range.
" I know.
I guess that means he must have done it.
But not one single person can think of any reason for him to want her dead.
Until we can find someone who can We don't rule out the possibility he didn't do this.
Yeah.
Yes, sir.
So I have dusted the gun and there is only one clear set of prints.
Belonging to Mr Peterson.
All right, thanks, Jo.
What background have we got so far? So this is what I dug up on the three people that were at the house the morning of the murder.
We have Emmet Peterson.
Raised by his grandparents in a rainforest! Quite a childhood, by the sound of it.
Learned to live off the land and forage for food.
What about the husband? Patrick Harborne.
as part of the diplomatic corps.
Met Gardenia, and got married after six months, which is way too early, if you ask me.
I should get that, sir.
And the daughter? Cassie Harborne, just turned 21.
No current employment.
So we've arrested Cassie a few times, driving under influence, possession.
Bit of a teenage tearaway, from memory.
But I know her school counsellor was across it, so she might be able to fill us in on what was going on.
That was Gardenia's driver.
Oh, I thought it was worth Marlon seeing if he had any insights on the family.
And? For the last few weeks, he's been driving Gardenia to meet this mysterious guy at the Paradise Bay Hotel.
Said it was quite clandestine, you know? Any idea who the guy was? No, but he did say that a few clays before she was murdered, he saw her having a blazing row with her husband.
He accused her of having an affair.
There were these texts on her phone, that's how I found out.
And do you know who this guy is? No.
What did the texts say? Arranging to meet for lunch and then up in his hotel room.
I mean, it's all so damn seedy.
Did you confront her about this? Well, she denied it, insisted I'd got it wrong.
But we've been together 25 years.
I know when she's lying.
Why were you going through your wife's text messages in the first place, Mr Harborne? Well, when you're married to someone as successful as Deene, it can put a certain pressure on you.
How do you mean? Well, her whole life was consumed by Fallen Tree.
And when you're left at home alone while your wife's out at the office 24-bit, jetting off for meetings, business dinners, well, the paranoia creeps in.
We hear you were pretty worked up when you confronted her about the affair.
It's Jp Excuse me.
Look, Inspector, I loved Deene with all my heart.
The sad truth is I had already decided to forgive her the betrayal.
I'd have forgiven her anything if it meant I wouldn't lose her.
Which makes me pathetic.
And needy.
It doesn't make me a killer.
Thanks, Jp.
We'll meet you there.
Sir? Jg's got an ID on the man Gardenia was meeting.
Thank you very much.
OK, so the guy's called Tyrone Vincent, and though he has a St Marie passport, he actually lives in Miami.
The receptionist says that he's been staying here for the last couple of weeks.
Give a reason for his visit? Mm-mm.
He's had no visitors apart from Gardenia, nor has he done very much apart from stuff his face and laze by the pool.
Her words, not mine.
Does the hotel know where he is now? He checked out about an hour ago to catch a midday boat to Guadalupe before flying back to Florida.
It's ten to! We'll never get to the harbour in time.
Sorry, sorry, sorry! Can't stop! Sorry, sorry, sorry! Excuse me.
I'm looking for this man.
Has he got on the boat yet? More, more.
Even more than that.
He's got to be somewhere.
Don't be stingy now, sweetheart.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, more, more, more, more, more.
Yeah.
All right.
Perfect.
Tyrone Vincent? I need you to come to the station with me.
We have to speak with you.
Listen, I got a boat to catch.
I ain't got time to talk to nobody.
But, uh, nice try, Junior.
Sorry, Mr Vincent, but you'll just have to get a later boat.
Right.
I see.
Then, um Now, who'd you have to go and do that, sir? Hey! Hey! Stop! Tyrone, stop, now! Let go of the bag.
Oh, I think I'm having a heart attack.
Well, the fact that Tyrone Vincent legged it as soon as he saw you It's pretty suspicious, sir.
He's not going to get very far without this, though, is he? Sir? I just spoke to Patrick Harborne and he recognised the name Tyrone Vincent.
Oh, yeah? Yeah.
He said Tyrone was Gardenia's assistant, but from about 15 years ago, and he only worked for her for a year or so.
Did she keep in touch with him? Not that he knew of.
But he couldn't think of any reason Tyrone would get in touch all these years later.
He doubts they were having an affair.
Tyrone was arrogant and cocky.
Gardenia never really warmed to him.
Whoa.
Oof.
Yeah, that's a lot of money.
And that's even more of a lot of money.
Must be 40 or 50 grand there.
Is it me or is this starting to look extremely dodgy? If anybody knows dodgy, it's me, and this is big-time dodgy.
What on Earth was going on between Gardenia Dijon and Tyrone Vincent? Sir? Emmet Peterson is asking to speak with you.
I found myself dozing off, and then it came back to me.
What did? I was going through the garden that morning on my way to work — would have been just before seven — when I heard voices.
Do you know who they were? I know I heard two voices, arguing.
One was Gardenia.
Someone else was there with her.
So there was potentially a third person present around the time of the murder.
I'd say the most likely suspect is Tyrone Vincent, so far.
You should ask the hotel for any CCTV they have of Gardenia and Tyrone together.
Good idea.
We also need to stop him making any attempt to leave the island.
He's got no passport, but that doesn't mean he couldn't hire a boat himself and try and make his escape that way.
Do you want me and Marlon to do some surveillance on the harbour? Yeah, sounds like a plan.
You lads get down to the harbour before it gets too dark.
Probably going to burn the midnight oil myself, see what I can dig up on Tyrone Vincent.
Oh, Florence.
When I was at the house earlier, I saw photos of a little boy.
Yes, that would be their son.
Cody, I think he was called.
Was called? He was knocked down by a car when he was four.
That's awful.
And according to the school counsellor, Cassie never really got over what happened to her little brother.
Must have been hard for her.
That's why she acted out as a teenager — drinking, taking drugs.
Trying to deal with the pain.
So maybe start by complimenting, or try something like, "I never really noticed before, "but you have a lovely smile.
" You know what, Harry? I've never really noticed before, but you have a lovely smile.
Sir? Ash! Hi, Florence! I wasn't expecting you.
Mm, yeah, I thought I'd come and help.
So how are you getting on? Anything of interest on Tyrone Vincent? Yes, actually.
I've been going through Gardenia's finances, and it seems she withdrew $50,000 in cash only five days ago.
Exact same amount found in Tyrone's bag.
Mm-gm.
So she gave him the money.
Yeah, but why? That's the question.
Er Sir.
This is I can explain everything, Florence.
Seriously? The Online Museum of Crayons? Yes! Yes, I've been digging a bit deeper into that crayon.
Did you know that the average child wears down 720 crayons by the time they're ten years old? That is a lot of colouring-in.
OK.
I'm going to get a beer.
I think you've driven me to drink.
You would not be the first colleague that's said that to me.
Do you want one, too? Yeah, sure.
Let's have a lovely, relaxing drink together.
If you've both got to work through the night, you're going to need to keep your energy up.
Thank you, Mrs Hooper.
This is really good of you.
It's only leftovers.
Pepper pot stew, rice and some green fig salad should keep you going.
And I've got to say, I'm not going to miss this kind of thing when you start your new job, Jp.
Working all hours, not knowing when I'll see you next.
I was going to tell you, Marlon.
Tonight, actually.
Did I just put my foot in it? Yes.
No, no, no.
It's fine.
I assumed you'd take the job.
You know, opportunities like that don't come around often.
Congratulations, man.
You deserve it.
Wewe talked about it, didn't we? All night! And what it came down to is this.
I want to be there for them more, Marlon, see my daughters growing up.
And this new job, its hours, it kind of lets me do that.
Hey! Hey, hey, hey- All right, little lady.
OK.
Well, er good for you, man.
Good for you.
Hey.
Thank you.
Yeah.
You know, Florence, your smile My smile? Mm, yeah, I'd never really noticed it before, so I wasn't smiling.
That's true.
That'svery true.
But I was just thinking about your smile Why were you thinking of my smile? Your teeth Have I got something stuck in them? No, no, no, no.
I was thinking that your, er, teeth They always look really healthy to me.
I imagine you take really good care of them.
Do you floss regularly? Yes, I do.
Thank you for noticing.
Oh.
Everything all right? Yes.
It'sthe school friend I bumped into the other night, wants to know if I fancied going for a drink some time.
Oh.
Kind of an old-school-friend reunion drink? More like a date kind of drink.
Yeah, sure.
And will you? Go, I mean.
I don't know.
I wasn't expecting it.
But I've been starting to think that I have to have a life again.
You do.
You deserve to be happy.
Well, we'll see.
But for now, it can wait until tomorrow.
Florence? Florence! Hi.
Hi.
Sorry to wake you.
OK.
So I dug up the police attendance report for the day Cody was hit by a car.
It was August 3rd, 2006.
That was 15 years ago.
Patrick Harborne said it was 15 years ago Tyrone Vincent stopped working for Gardenia.
Exactly.
Now, I checked the island immigration records and it shows Tyrone Vincent left St Marie and moved to Florida three weeks after the accident.
And now he's back.
And Gardenia's giving him $50,000.
But why? Jp SIGHS OK, I just done another recce, and there's no sign of Tyrone Vincent.
I've spoken to a couple of fishermen.
They're going to keep an eye out for us.
Marlon.
Are you asleep? Wake up, man! Oh! Sorry, Sarge.
I must have just dozed off, you know? How can you fall asleep when you're standing up? What, you never done that before? Er, no, because I'll fall over.
You just need practice, man.
You just need practice.
Marlon, look.
Mm? There.
What's that guy doing on that boat? That's him.
Come on.
Tyrone Vincent.
Why am I not surprised? junior! Fancy seeing you here.
Aren't you going to be late for school? You'll miss registration.
Step off the boat, Mr Vincent.
You're under arrest.
I was blackmailing her, all right? Over what? The accident 15 years ago.
Gardenia's son? I know the truth of what happened.
Which is? I wasn't working that day.
Realised I left my laptop at her house, so I dropped by to pick it up.
Cassie said her mum was outside, but she wasn't.
Gardenia had gone to the office.
That woman was so obsessed with her work that she left her kids all alone.
Cody managed to open a security gate, went out to look for her.
Gardenia got back within moments of it happening, so I was the only one who knew that she'd not been there.
She was devastated, broken by it.
I said I could lie for her, if she made it worth my while.
Make her little problem go away.
Don't give me that face, Junior.
So that's why you came back two weeks ago.
To ask for more money.
Things got pretty rough in Miami, some pretty hefty debts, so I figured, she bought my silence the first time around, maybe she'd do it again.
But I didn't kill her.
All right? Why would I? The woman just gave me 50k.
Where were you between 6:30 and 7:30 the day before yesterday? At my hotel, having breakfast.
A sweet little waitress served me — she'll tell you.
I couldn't have killed anybody.
So the truth is, Tyrone Vincent has no motive.
And if he was at the hotel when Gardenia Dijon was shot, then he has an alibi as well.
Yeah.
Sir, Sarge, there's something you should see.
So I've been working through the CCTV footage the hotel sent over of Gardenia and Tyrone.
Both times they go to his bedroom to talk, so there's not much to go on.
But Gardenia's second meeting, I noticed something.
Gardenia arrives here, and thenwatch.
Just here.
- That's Cassie.
- She's following her mother.
Yup.
And then Gardenia and Tyrone go to the bedroom and shortly after, Cassie appears.
And she listens by the door.
So Cassie had found out about the blackmail.
And the truth of what happened that day 15 years ago.
When I listened to Mum and Tyrone talking, I realised, all this time, she had been lying — to me, to Dad, to the whole world, and all just to protect herself and her stupid company.
I can still remember it.
That morning.
Exactly as it was.
Me and Cody at the dining table.
I had my doll.
He had his colouring-in book.
Content as can be.
Cody was colouring-in? He was holding that when he walked out.
When it happened, I went outside and found it on the ground.
I kept it all this time.
Sowhy was it beside your mother's body after she was shot? Because I gave it to her that morning when I went to kill her.
I wanted her to know, to remember what happened that day.
I know what happened 15 years ago.
When I realised what she had done to us, to Cody, all I could think was I wanted to hurt her, so I I got myself that gun.
Except, in that moment staring at her, seeing the pain inside her I just couldn't do it.
I dropped the gun and I ran to the house, and when I got back inside, I went to see Dad, to talk to him about it all.
But he was asleep.
And then I heard the gun fire, and I didn't know what had happened.
So three of our suspects can now be placed at the time of the shooting.
Cassie can alibi her father when the gun was fired.
Which means, if she's telling the truth, she was also inside the house when the shot was fired.
As for Tyrone Vincent, he was on the other side of the island at the Paradise Bay Hotel.
All of which leaves us with only one suspect.
Who doesn't have an alibi.
Or a motive.
We think it was Gardenia and Cassie's voices that you heard that morning.
But you still can't remember what happened next? Not straight after that.
But Go on.
What is it? I can see the gun in my hand.
After it's been fired.
I've shot her.
Gardenia.
I did it, Inspector.
I can see it in my mind.
I killed her.
I told you.
You need to attend the Magistrates' Court in the morning.
So what is it, some work experience you're doing here? I'm a trainee police officer.
Ooh! Trainee officer.
Good for you, Junior.
OK, you need to stop calling me that, all right? So Emmet remembers shooting Gardenia, but he has no idea why.
But if Emmet remembers doing it, then we have to charge him.
But why would a man who cared so deeply about his oldest friend pick up a gun and kill her? Sir, the ballistics report came in.
There's no real surprises, but they found small traces of dark blue paint around the edge of the trigger guard.
Not sure where it's come from or how it got there.
How odd.
All right.
Thanks, Jp.
Oh, I meant to say.
I heard from the commissioner about you taking the new job.
Congratulations.
Thank you, sir.
I can't believe it.
Two weeks and I'll be out of here.
Sad to see you leaving, but Well, we'll miss you.
Yeah.
And there you go, Junior.
I said stop calling me that.
Getting tetchy now, hmm? Reckon somebody needs an early night, Junior.
Don't touch me.
Easy now, little man.
Just being friendly.
Nothing wrong with me being friendly, Trainee Officer Get off me! Oh, Junior's got some fight in him! Whoa, whoa, hey! You stay back.
Your officer just Stay back! No, no, no, no.
I want to form an official complaint.
You calm down, OK? I want to make an official complaint right now.
Marlon, wait! Marlon, stop.
Come back! Marlon! Mind if I have one of those? Sure.
I've messed up big time, haven't I? An official complaint has been made.
And it's gone up to the commissioner.
That's it, isn't it? I'm out.
Not necessarily.
Come on, Sarge.
I was already on my last chance and I just went and punched a suspect.
The only way that can end is me back in prison.
I'm sorry I let you down.
Hey, man, you Marlon, you haven't let me down.
I just I don't know why you did it.
It's not like you to get worked up and angry because of some lowlife like Tyrone Vincent.
So what's up? What's going on, Marlon? I overheard you say you'd be leaving in two weeks.
And I've never had anybody look out for me, Sarge you know, keep an eye on me the way you have.
And this is the first job I ever had.
And I was finally getting good at it, because of you.
So I thought there's no point in me staying if you're not going to be there.
Marlon.
You're not getting good at it because of me.
I gave you a few pointers, that's all.
You were always going to be a good police officer, with or without me.
You know, I actually started to think I could make a go of it.
Actually achieve something with my life.
But then I just went and messed it all up.
Like I always do.
Morning, sir.
Morning, Jp.
You're in early.
Yeah, I couldn't sleep very well.
Huh.
What about you? Same.
I thought I'd have one last look at the evidence to see if there was something we were missing.
And? Not a sausage, Jp.
There must be something here that can help us understand what happened that morning, why Emmet shot Gardenia.
I guess all we can do is go with what the physical evidence is telling us that Emmet Peterson fired that gun — and accept that we may never know why he did it.
Huh! Look at this! It's Gardenia's hand, sir.
Yeah, and then there's this.
Her other hand, sir.
Yeah, isn't it just? But it's the fingernails that interest me, Jp.
Well, not all of them, actually.
Just the thumbnails.
The answer was right there all along, right on her thumbs.
That's why we couldn't find a motive for Emmet because there isn't one.
Why would a man suddenly, out of the blue, kill his best friend for no reason? I dropped the gun and I ran to the house.
The ballistics report came in.
They found small traces of dark blue paint around the edge of the trigger guard.
I did it, Inspector.
I've shot her.
You know what happened the morning of the murder, sir? Yes, I do, Jo.
Yes, I do.
All right, Emmet.
I want us to try something.
Now I think I know what happened the morning Gardenia was shot, but I need you to remember.
So I want you to close your eyes for me.
I want you to go back in your mind to that morning.
You had breakfast.
And you headed down to the gardens to work.
I know what really happened.
And you remember hearing voices, so you came down here, to this secluded little sanctuary.
It's Cody's.
I.
You saw Gardenia standing there.
That's right Gardenia was stood there.
She was crying.
And holding something.
Staring at it.
A crayon.
A child's crayon.
And was there anything else? Something lying on the floor? The gun! Gardenia? It was just sat there, a few feet in front of her.
Emmetopen your eyes.
Gardenia started saying she was to blame how she denied it for so long.
It's all my fault, Emmet.
Cody's accident.
She stepped forward.
And I could see that she was going for the gun.
I could see what she was going to do, so I grabbed it.
She looked at me like she was horrified I was trying to stop her.
She said I can't live with it any more.
And she put her hand round mine.
Before I could even think, she pulled at the gun and pushed the trigger.
I didn't do it! It was Gardenia.
There were scratches to the blue varnish on her thumbnails.
The lab found traces of it on the trigger guard.
They thought it was paint.
We now believe it was blue nail varnish.
Which scraped off as Gardenia forced the trigger.
You didn't kill your friend, Emmet.
You tried to save her life.
And, after it happened right in front of you, you must have felt incredibly shaken.
My legs were weak.
I couldn't feel them.
And then it all went black.
When you came round covered in blood, a gun in your hand, you had no idea what happened, due to the amnesia.
You're innocent, Emmet.
Why did she have to go and do it? It's going to be tough for them, working through it all.
Yeah, but they have each other.
Inspector.
DS Chassell.
Well done on solving the case.
But I'm sorry to say that's not why I'm here.
Is it Marlon? With an official complaint being made, I have no choice but to stand Trainee Officer Price down.
But sir, he'll end up going to prison.
I mean, surely there's something else we can do.
He assaulted a suspect.
It's a serious breach of conduct.
My hands are tied.
From here, you will be taken to court, where your sentence will be given, and then on to prison.
Do you understand? Then come with me.
Wait, sir.
Stop.
This isn't right.
Sergeant Hooper, I have no choice in the matter.
I know, sir.
But I mean This isn't right because it wasn't Marlon that punched Tyrone Vincent.
It was me.
Wait.
Jp! I did it.
I hit Tyrone, not Marlon.
I have a witness statement from Mr Vincent claiming that it was Trainee Officer Price.
I know, sir, but he's lying.
Why would he do that? Because he took against Marlon and he wanted to see him taken down.
Then why didn't Trainee Officer Price deny the allegation? Because he's trying to protect me.
But it was me that did it, sir.
Isn't that right, Inspector? Jo I did it.
Just say it, sir.
Say it's true.
Then we'll be able to sort this whole mess out, won't we, sir? Yeah, it's true.
Jo did it.
He punched Mr Vincent.
And DS Chassell saw it as well.
Didn't you, Sarge? Yes, that's right, sir.
We all saw it.
You're fully aware that this misconduct will go on your record, Sergeant Hooper, and will stay there for the rest of your time as a serving police officer? It won't affect your new job, but it will affect this one.
Today will be your last day.
You will serve a two-week suspension.
I understand, sir.
I have one last question.
Is this true? That you are entirely innocent in this matter? Yes, sir.
Then you may return to your duties.
Sergeant Hooper.
A word.
Outside.
Um, sir, look, I know what you're going to say, and I'm sorry, because I know I've broken all kinds of rules here.
But Marlon, sir, he's shaping up to be a good police officer.
And yes, I know he's a bit rough around the edges, but he's finally been given a chance in life.
And I don't think we should be the ones taking that away from him.
Actually all I was going to say, Sergeant Hooper is I've never been more proud of you.
Jo EXHALES I don't know about anybody else, but I could do with a rum.
Make mine a large one, sir.
Well, you lads lock up, and we'll get the first round in.
Actually, sir, I might leave you three to it this evening.
Oh, you already have plans? Oh! Are you going on that date? Yeah.
I thought it was time to take a leap.
And if it feels too soon, I can always just come home.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm really pleased for you.
Thank you.
Night.
Night.
Sarge.
I don't quite know what to say about what you did.
Trainee Officer Marlon Price lost for words.
Isn't that a thing? But thank you, Sarge.
I mean it.
Well, I meant what I said.
Marlon, you can make a real go of this, make sergeant yourself one day.
And I know we won't be working side by side, but you've got my number.
If you're finding things hard or need any advice, call me.
Deal? DeaL All right.
Oh, and, um, before I forget these are yours now.
Seriously? You take good care of this thing.
I will, Sarge, don't worry.
All right, man, let's go and get this drink.
Here's to you, Jo.
To your glorious past as a St Marie police officer, and your even more glorious future in your new job.
Yeah, man.
To you.
Oh, thank you, guys.
Man, I'm really going to miss you.
Big time.
Won't be the same without you.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Oof! Anyone else fancy another drink? Yeah, man.
I'll get them.
Er, not you, though.
You know, you should have seen him, Mrs Hooper.
Sarge done himself real proud.
Stuck up for me real good and proper.
I can believe it.
And that's why I married him, because he's a good man.
Aren't you, Mr Hooper? Mm-gm.
All right, all right, all right.
That's enough, that's enough.
You only have yourself to blame, Neville, with Florence.
I tried, Catherine.
Besides, it's only one date.
It's not like she's marrying the guy.
More excuses.
What do you want me to do? If you like her, go and tell her! What, now? Then when, Neville? When will you ever find the courage to do it? Tonight, there is only one man who will get to spend the evening sitting across with Florence, enjoying her company, and it's the man who was brave enough to ask her out.
For once, try being bold.
Just go and tell her you like her.
It's no big deal.
No big deal at all.
Just do it.
Just knock on the door and say what you want to say.
Sir! Hi, Florence.
Uh what time was your, er? Oh, he's picking me up in 20 minutes.
Right.
Was there something you wanted? There was, actually.
And what was it? Well, erthing isI had something I wanted toto tell you.
What, sir? Well, what I wanted to say was
