Death In Paradise (2011) s11e02 Episode Script
Series 11, Episode 2
All right, now I get it, Connor.
The place looks amazing.
We refurbed the clubhouse about six years ago.
You'll see, proper classy in there.
Desreta, this is me brother, Bradley.
He's over visiting.
Desreta here is our club president.
Connor giving you the full tour? I think it's just an excuse to get me out for a game, cos he knows he'll beat me.
Well, I hope you'll stay on for our club social, later.
See how us golfers do things Caribbean-style.
Right.
It is time for me to royally whoop your ass.
Hiya, love, do you know where the spare set of clubs is? Where they always are, Con.
Behind reception.
How many times? You fancy joining us, Jakey? No point in owning a golf course if you don't get to play any actual golf now and then.
Go on.
Come on.
Thanks, Mum.
Wait a minute.
You know what? We need a photo of this.
Great idea.
Right, then.
Game on.
So? What's the deal with those two? They a thing or not? Your guess is as good as mine.
I tell you, youngsters today.
Raffle tickets.
Must be in the office.
I'll go and get them.
You finish up here.
How dare you? Trying to tell me how to live my life? Who do you think you are? Huh? Who do you think you are? I can't believe that you would do this to me.
I DON'T BLOODY BELIEVE IT! Holly.
You left your phone.
Oh, thanks, Dee.
You have one new message.
Holly, it's me, Bradley.
Jake, with me.
Something's happened to your uncle.
Bradley? Brad, talk to me.
Call an ambulance.
Now.
Brad, Brad.
No No.
He's dead.
Working late? Yes, I'm just catching up on paperwork, so Never ends, does it? And you? Same.
Same.
I should probably .
.
get back - get back to it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, me too.
Sir.
Yeah? Do you think, maybe? Oh, erm Commissioner? Yes I see.
Yep, OK, we're on the way, bye.
There's been an incident at Palm Bay Golf Club.
Very possibly a murder.
Oh, I'm I'm sorry.
No, after you.
No, age before beauty.
What? Er, I don't know why I said that.
It's It's not what I meant, it's the wrong phrase.
Just, after you I got the call from Desreta King.
She's the club's president.
And I'm an honorary member Of course you are, sir.
I'll go check in with Ms King.
Evening, Commissioner.
Sergeant.
Naomi.
Evening, sir.
Sarg.
Body's this way.
I've got Marlon keeping a close eye on our prime suspect.
We have a prime suspect already? Er, Connor Faircroft, the victim's brother.
Owns and runs the golf club with his wife.
It was her and their son that found the body.
And why is he our prime suspect? This is Mrs Faircroft's phone.
Holly, it's me, Bradley.
I'm at the first tee.
Sorry, I needed some air.
Let off some steam.
Can we talk? It's Connor, he's not great, Connor Connor, what are you doing? Connor is his brother.
Seriously, Connor, put it down, stop Please! That's pretty damning evidence.
The message was left at six o'clock.
Er, the victim's sister-in-law, Holly Faircroft, didn't pick it up until 20 past.
I checked .
.
and the call was definitely made from the victim's phone.
Hmm.
It's a deep impact.
I reckon the brother used a blunt object to hit him with.
There's a club missing from his golf bag.
The driver, if I'm not mistaken.
You a golfer yourself, then, sir? Never hit a ball in my life, Naomi.
But I once spent a lost weekend learning all about the game, for my pub quiz team.
Oh.
That's what you call dedication.
Ironically, there hasn't been a question come up on the subject since.
It's a pretty sheltered spot here.
Still worth checking the CCTV cameras back at the clubhouse.
Yeah.
Marlon and I can do that, Sarge.
Yeah, and let's see if we can find that possible murder weapon, the missing driver.
Start from the inside and work our way out.
Commissioner? I think we need to speak with Ms King.
There's something she knows about the victim and his brother.
They were arguing earlier.
Connor and his brother.
.
.
try and tell me how to live my life! What time was this? A few minutes to six.
So just before Bradley was killed.
Holly and me, we were about to start selling the raffle tickets.
I went to get the book from the office.
That's when I heard them.
And what were they saying? Connor was angry.
Said something about not believing Bradley would do that to him.
He was awful worked up about it.
I didn't want to say anything to Holly, in the circumstances, but I thought you should know.
Thank you, Ms King.
So, the brothers argued.
The victim went to get some air.
Then Connor Faircroft attacked him.
Sir.
I think we've found the murder weapon.
So, after I searched our prime suspect, I saw he had this pair of keys for a padlock.
And I thought I'd search his locker, just in case.
Sarge said you were looking for a driver and, well, Connor has two of them.
And this one looks like it belongs to a different set of clubs.
The handle's the same as the ones from the crime scene, right, sir? Yes, it is.
And take a look at the clubhead.
Blood.
Not much of it, because it's obviously been wiped, but there's definitely traces of blood on here.
So Connor hid the weapon in his own set of golf clubs in his locker? If he didn't have time to dispose of it, his only option was to hide it, in plain sight.
Until he was able to get rid of it properly.
Except, he didn't bank on Officer Pryce rumbling him, did he? SoI guess we have our killer.
Yeah.
Florence, would you talk to the victim's family? See what they've got to say.
Sir, I think it's time we had a talk with our prime suspect.
I don't I I didn't put that club in my locker.
It wasn't me.
Anyone else have a key? No, they're the only two.
Sowho do you think put it there? I don't know.
Look, someone's setting me up here.
I swear to ya I didn't kill Bradley.
I wouldn't.
He's my brother.
Connor, we have a voicemail message left by Bradley, which IDs you as the person attacking him.
Are you saying that didn't happen? Yes, that wasn't me! All right, can you talk me through today's events from your point of view? Er Brad and me played golf this afternoon.
Had a good time.
Right, then, game on.
It was the club social and we had a few drinks.
Bite to eat.
The next thing I hear, he's been attacked and I'm being told it was me that did it.
So things were amicable between you two? Yeah.
Thenwhat about the argument you had with your brother earlier this evening? It was nothing.
That's just brother stuff.
We haven't had a lot to do with each other for a few years.
Longer than that, if I'm honest.
How long? It's about 16 years since we've seen each other.
Since me and Hol came out here, bought the club.
That is a long time.
What happened? I loved him to bits, but we're different, me and him.
He felt hurt when we upped and left the UK.
Like I'd abandoned him.
That's what we were arguing over.
Why he's finally come out here.
To see if we can make our peace.
Look, all of this, it's not something I would kill him over! Connor, if you're denying this, and it wasn't you .
.
are you going to be able to tell me where you were at six o'clock this evening, when the murder took place? Er, it's all a blur Erm, I remember I was annoyed that Brad and me had argued.
I went out for a smoke.
Out the back.
It was six o'clock, I was having a cigarette.
Definitely.
Hey, team.
So this is the CCTV down the side of the clubhouse.
Connor appears here at two minutes to six.
How long was he there? So, Mr Faircroft has another cigarette.
And then he goes at .
.
ten past six.
So he has an alibi.
So, what was the deal with the voicemail message, then? I mean, the victim said it was Connor Faircroft that attacked him.
And what about the weapon being found in his locker? He's the only one with the keys to it.
But this CCTV doesn't lie.
I know all the evidence says it was him, but our prime suspect was nowhere near the crime scene when his brother was murdered.
I was hoping Neville might be here this evening.
Ah, me too.
He's not been in for a week or so now.
It's not like him.
He's behaving differently at work, too.
Things areawkward.
He's an Englishman, no? They excel at being awkward.
Yeah, but I mean more awkward than usual.
There's a distance between us.
Ever since we talked about You know? I guess it was a big deal for him.
Telling you how he feels.
He's probably a little bruised.
I know.
Maybe he just needs time.
Until he's feeling himself again.
So what do I do, in the meantime? I guess, just act like everything's normal between you both.
Morning, Marlon.
Sarge.
You wearing new trainers? That they are, Sarge.
Bought them last night.
Freedom X1-50s.
Limited edition.
Pretty cool, huh? Huh.
Sothey couldn't have been cheap.
I've got some savings.
Really? It may surprise you, Sarg, but, financially, I'm actually pretty shrewd.
Financially shrewd? Yeah.
Well, of all the things I never thought I'd hear you say! Shrewd! What's going on here? I've taken up golf, Florence.
OK.
Yeah, well, I've been thinking recently, I needed to get a hobby.
So I popped down to The Palm Bay, picked up some clubs and got myself a trial membership.
And are you playing against someone? No, no.
Flying solo.
Just me and my trusty bag of sticks there.
So maybe you need some company? I-I could be your caddy.
Erm I think I'm I'm fine on my own, with this one, Florence.
And And who knows? I might find a friend or two out on the links.
We should crack on with the case.
Yeah, we should, you're right, absolutely.
Excellent idea, DS Cassell.
Holly, it's me, Bradley.
I'm at the first tee.
Sorry, I needed some air.
Let off some steam.
Can we talk? It's Connor.
He's not great.
Connor? Connor, what are you doing? Seriously, Connor, put it down.
Stop, please! That is number one of three pieces of evidence that points to Connor Faircroft being the prime suspect in the murder of his brother, Bradley.
Number two, we have a witness who saw the victim arguing with the suspect only minutes before the crime took place.
I can't believe you'd do this to me, I can't believe it! And number three, upon a search of Connor Faircroft's locker, Marlon discovered what appears to be the weapon used in the attack.
You're welcome.
So, any further developments? I heard back from the lab, sir.
Postmortem confirms death was caused by a blunt-force trauma.
Also, it was definitely Bradley Fairclough's blood on the golf club recovered from Connor's locker.
So it's got to be him that did it.
Except, the CCTV footage proves he wasn't anywhere near his brother when the crime occurred.
Which leaves us asking one question, and one question only.
What the flippety-flip is going on? It's not quite how I would have phrased it, Marlon, but close enough.
So .
.
what the flippety-flip IS going on? I checked with the security company who supply the CCTV system to the golf club, and they are adamant it wasn't tampered or messed with.
Then all I can think is, maybe Connor Faircroft was right.
What if someone IS trying to frame him for murder, and all the evidence we've uncovered so far is staged in some way? Buthow, sir? Are you saying someone doctored the voicemail message? Maybe.
And how did they get the weapon into his locker? He was the only person who could open it.
We should have that padlock examined for evidence of it being picked.
I can sort that out for you, sir.
But if someone is trying to frame Connor for murder, who is it? Who murdered the victim, and planted all the evidence, and why? I guess we need to look at people who have intimate knowledge of Connor.
His movements.
Who knew he and Bradley were having issues? Yeah, and I suggest we focus on those closest to him - his wife, Holly, and his son, Jake.
Naomi, see if you can dig up any background on the victim and the suspects.
Florence, I suggest we head over to the hotel Bradley Faircroft was staying at - see if a search of the room gives us anything.
Hmm, agreed.
OK, let's get to work.
So, why have you got me bagging up all these golf clubs, anyway? I thought we already found the weapon.
Because we don't know what else the killer touched.
There might be a stray fibre from his or her clothes.
Or a smear of blood with a print on it.
As part of my crime scene forensics module, I learned that you have to test everything, because you don't know what you're looking for until you find it.
That's actually pretty cool, Sarge.
Merci.
C'est tout pour le moment.
That was interesting.
Yeah? The maid who works this area - she said she noticed while Mr Faircroft was staying here, a young man hanging around near his room.
Matches Jake Faircroft exactly.
We should talk to him.
How are you getting on? I've been going through the victim's emails.
Six months ago, seems it was Holly that reached out to Bradley.
Look, it wasn't the first time it had happened.
Drinking, gambling - anger issues, too, by the sounds of it.
"He's just like he was in 2005.
But this time, "you're not here to help me.
" Connor's behaved like this before.
But why's no-one mentioned it to us? It was just after our wedding, when Connor first started to lose his way.
The drinking, you mean? Yeah - drugs, as well, he told me later.
What caused it? His life had come crashing down around him, that's what.
How come? Golf.
Ever since Connor was a young kid, all he's ever wanted was to make it as a pro.
His dad taught him and Bradley how to play, but for Connor .
.
it became more than just a hobby.
It was his dream? And he was good.
He wonGod knows how many trophies on the amateur circuit.
But that extra thing that takes you up a level, that makes you a pro - Connor didn't have it.
So he went into self-destruct mode? Was like being on a roller-coaster, living with him.
No job.
Out all hours.
Coming home a wreck.
I was pregnant for the first time.
But Bradley helped you? He just sort of sensed that something was wrong.
He saved us.
As a family.
He made Connor realise that he was destroying the one good thing that he had.
Got him back on his feet.
Looking to the future again.
Is that when you came out here? Yeah, we saw an ad online for Palm Bay.
Felt like a chance to turn the page.
So that's what we did.
So why has it started happening again? Why is Connor drinking? Just happens every now and then.
Goes years being fine, and then suddenly he falls down again.
Only this time, it's the worst it's been.
And that's why you needed support? Hmm-mmm.
Hmm.
So Bradley coming over here to make peace with Connor, was just - what? A lie? It was what Brad had to do if he was going to stand any chance of helping Connor.
Hol? What's going on? Oh, no, it's nothing.
Just They're just checking some information, that's all.
Erm, I've answered all your questions, soI'll show you out.
Oh.
Well, thanks for your time.
We now know Connor has been acting erratically recently.
Plus, his wife and brother have been sneaking behind his back to try and deal with his behaviour.
Which, if he'd become aware of their secret plotting, might have exacerbated things.
The evidence mounting against him is undeniable.
First, there's the voicemail in which the victim uses Connor's name during the attack.
Second, the weapon used was found in Connor's locker - to which only he has the keys to open it.
Third, we now know Connor had some issues going on recently, which might have caused some tension between him and his brother.
Goes years being fine and then suddenly he falls down again.
Hmm, I kind of feel like there's a fourth thing.
And it was me who should've said it.
Hmm .
.
got it.
The argument witnessed by Desreta King shortly before the murder.
I mean .
.
it really does look like it has to be him that did it, sir.
Except that he was seen on CCTV at the exact same time his brother was being murdered.
Hey.
Look, er I need to get out.
All this is It's getting to me.
OK.
Well, wish me luck, Florence.
Luck? Yes, with the old, you know .
.
"Fore!" I see.
Enjoy your golf.
Yes.
Goodnight, Florence.
Night.
Er, Marlon, how did you get on with finding someone to check out that padlock? Oh, I did it.
No evidence of it being picked or forced in any way.
Oh, OK.
Well, who was it you got to do it? Just for the evidence log.
Oh, it's like I said, Sarge.
I did it.
I didn't know you were a locksmith.
I'm not, I Er OK, look, if it had been picked, there'd be a scratch here, where the key goes in.
And abrasion on the key-shaft.
But it's clean as.
So How come you're such an expert? Er I'm just super-talented, Sarge.
I thought you knew that.
All right.
Thanks.
Have a good night! Soyou don't know about Marlon? He joined us on a training scheme for young offenders.
That's why he knows certain things likehow to pick a lock.
I see.
Right.
Well, good for Marlon.
Been given a second chance and he's making the most of it.
The boy should be proud of himself.
But the Inspector didn't tell you? Well, I guess he was planning to tell me when we do my induction.
You've not had your induction yet? No, but we've been really busy.
Especially the Inspector.
And, between you and me, I think he has something playing on his mind at the moment.
I'll have a word with him about your induction.
Night, Naomi.
Night, Sarge.
Ahh! Commissioner.
I wasn't expecting you.
I'm informed you're here to play a round of golf, Inspector.
Well, I got a trial membership, sir, so I thought I'd give it a whirl.
Then may I suggest we play together? There must be plenty of other members you'd rather play with, sir.
There are.
But there's a police matter I need to discuss with you.
I thought perhaps we could kill two birds with one stone.
I'd love that.
Mm? Sir, I should probably warn you, I'm really not the most experienced golfer.
Just FYI.
Not to worry, Inspector.
It's been a while since I last played, myself.
I'll be a little rusty, as well.
OK.
There is a cross-Caribbean investigation currently gaining momentum that may require an undercover officer.
Right.
Knowing the specific details of the case, I believe DS Cassell is an ideal fit, but .
.
I wanted to gauge your opinion first.
Well, from my own slightly selfish personal point of view, sir, I think she'd leave a massive hole while she wasn't there.
Accepted.
But .
.
I do think DS Cassell - Florence - would relish the challenge, and would excel at it.
Good.
Leave it with me.
Sir.
And in the meantime .
.
let's play.
OK.
No! No.
What? What on Earth do you think you're doing, Inspector? Sir? Your stance, your positioning, is all wrong.
Look at yourself! How am I supposed to stand, sir? The ball ought to be in line with your left foot.
Your knees ought to be in line with your shoulders.
You needto bring them inmore.
Ah! Ah, sir, stop it.
That tickles.
You are such a child.
Bring your knees in more.
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
Now .
.
your arms need to hang comfortably in front of you.
Relax, Inspector, please.
I'd be a lot more relaxed, sir, if you, erm .
.
weren't doing this.
Thank you.
Now - that's better.
Take your shot.
OK.
Oh, dear.
Your turn, sir.
I'll tell you what, Lily.
Bradley had it coming, I swear to ya.
And I'm not sorry about it.
Not sorry about any of it.
Oh, morning, Florence.
I really think we need to talk aboutus.
Morning, DS Cassell.
Morning, Commissioner.
I didn't realise you were here.
The Inspector called me first thing.
He has some information that has thrown the spotlight of this investigation onto Desreta King.
Yes.
So, I was going through Connor's business and personal accounts.
And .
.
it seems he was draining money from the golf club account to pay for his gambling debts and drinking binges.
Thing is, he and Holly were already significantly in the red.
They remortgaged the house to finance the redevelopment of the clubhouse six years ago.
Now, the business is facing bankruptcy.
Which Ms King is not happy about? Desreta called an emergency meeting of the committee two weeks ago.
She was trying to force the sale of the golf club, to get rid of Connor.
But he managed to persuade them to give him another chance.
Now, according to the Commissioner's sources at the club, there is no love lost between Desreta King and Connor.
She hates him.
They say time waits for no man.
Wellthat ain't the case here.
Seems there's a lot of men happy to let the world move on without them, while they stay stuck and stranded in the past.
A lot of outdated attitudes? If you want to be polite about it.
Selwyn - you know what I'm talking about.
I'm not unaware there's been resistance from certain quarters of the club to a female president.
Is that why you couldn't sway the committee to get rid of Connor? I don't doubt for a moment that's what it was.
Connor's charming, you know.
Likes a drink.
Cracks a joke.
And the old guard lap it all up.
Must have made you very angry.
What's your point, Inspector? Well, if Connor goes to prison for murder, suddenly all your problems disappear.
Seriously?! You're trying to pin it on me now? Ms King, there is strong evidence to suggest that someone is trying to frame Connor Faircroft.
Selwyn, please.
You can't think It's absurd I'd do that.
There's been a murder.
And to solve it, my team have to look into every corner.
This club is your life, Desreta - I know you'd do anything to protect it.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit it'd be convenient for Connor to disappear out my life.
But you're wrong, Selwyn.
I wouldn't anything to protect this club.
Because I damn well wouldn't kill for it.
Excuse me.
Sir.
We've done a bit more digging into our suspects, and got some background info on Holly Faircroft.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, she's from Ilford, but moved north to the same town as Connor and Bradley when she was 16.
Worked at the golf club they used to go to - first as a barmaid, then ended up in reception.
I guess that's how her and Connor met.
And what about Jake? Anything on him? Jake Faircroft, attended St.
Joseph's up in Port Royal.
Helps his parents at Palm Bay on a part-time basis.
Nothing much else we could find on him.
I'll tell you about Jake Faircroft.
Cos there's something you need to know.
Morning, Jake.
How's the full English? Yeah.
It's all right.
We just spoke with your girlfriend.
Lily He's on his way out to you, Naomi.
Copy that, sir.
Standing by.
Poor guy doesn't stand a chance.
I got on my X1-50s, and I'm totally about to Usain Bolt it.
Er, Marlon, Ierm I think you've got a situation going on down there.
I got this.
Nice try, Mr Faircroft.
Thanks, Naomi.
So, as we were saying, Jake .
.
Lily told us some of the things you said to her last night.
When you'd had a bit too much to drink.
I'm not sorry about any of it.
She said the way you talked, it felt like you were almost admitting it was you that did it.
Nono That That That's not I didn't.
So, then, why were you seen hanging around Bradley's hotel room in the lead-up to his murder? Sorry? We have a witness that says they saw you loitering there.
So I I was hanging around the hotel .
.
so I could see for myself.
See what? Uncle Bradley.
And my mum.
I knew they'd been talking for the last few months.
Mum sounded different to how she's been the last year.
She sounded happy.
I hated them both for it.
So what did you do? Nothing.
I couldn't bear the thought of Mum knowing that I knew, or telling Dad the truth, so I just kept it to myself.
And then, next thing, Bradley's dead, and you lot are saying my dad did it.
I'm sorry, Mum No, no, Jake, darling.
You've done nothing wrong.
It's me.
I'm so sorry for all this.
Why don't you go wait in the car? You knew, didn't you? When Bradley flew over, you knew what would happen between the pair of you.
That's why he came.
Because your affair had already really started.
Had Bradley always felt this way about you? I think he's always cared, yes.
So what was the plan? There was no plan.
We just wanted to We NEEDED to be with each other.
That's why he came here.
And what about your marriage? Oh, I guess I'd accepted that, sometimes, you can't fix what's broken.
This brings us right back to Connor Faircroft.
If he'd found out about the affair, which we have no evidence to prove he did, then Everything OK, sir? She was wrong.
Holly Faircroft was wrong when she said you can't fix something that's broken.
What is it? I.
Could you just pull over for a second, please, Florence? Are you all right, sir? Is it your allergies playing up? No, no, it's not my allergies, Florence.
If it was, at least I might know what to do.
Just pop a couple of antihistamines.
Give a quick squirt up my nostrils with some anti-nasal spray.
Instead, I feel like I'm I'm in freefall.
I'm sorry, I don't understand.
It's us, Florence.
It's us - you said we needed to talk about us.
And you were right.
Because we can't go on with things like this between us.
I thought the best thing to do would be to put some space between us.
But that just made things even more awkward.
You've made things quite uncomfortable, sir.
Oh, I didn't mean to.
I just I just wanted things to go back to the way they used to be between us - friends Because that's all this is.
It's just me getting confused about my feelings for someone who is the most fantastic friend.
And I'd never forgive myself if I didn't try and fix this.
Because I know I'm the one who broke it.
But Florence, you You are .
.
the best friend I have ever had.
And I don't want to lose that.
So, please - please .
.
can we just go back to the way things used to be? Of course.
Yeah? Yeah, I'd like that.
Phew.
Er Oh, come on.
OK.
I don't know what that was.
Why are we English so bad at this sort of stuff, eh? I don't know.
But that wasn't too bad.
No? Inspector.
Hmm? I think we've got something for you.
Yeah? So, I had Marlon bag all the golf clubs and various bits and bobs found at the crime scene, and sent to the lab for testing.
We weren't expecting much back, sir.
But? We think we've got a possible second weapon.
Sorry.
What? That was exactly my reaction.
I was like, "Sorry, what?" But she's not messing.
Take a look.
So, this is the 5-wood that was in the cart-bag found by Bradley Faircroft's body.
And, as you can see, when the lab examined it with luminol Significant traces of blood.
And they tested it.
This is the victim's blood, for sure.
Marlon was right, Naomi - you aren't messing about.
I never mess, sir.
Not when it comes to solving crimes.
Any fingerprints on this? Er, they're just looking now.
Let's see what comes back.
So, this 5-wood is is the murder weapon? And the golf club that was in the locker was put there - what, to misdirect us? Sir, you know the till receipt I found in the victim's book from the hotel? Mm-hm.
I checked the VAT registration to see which shop, and it was a locksmith's Bradley visited the day before his murder.
I mean, this can't be a coincidence, when part of the evidence in this case involves a padlock.
Mm-hm.
Er, sir? Mr Faircroft.
I was wondering if I could have a word, Inspector? I wanted to let you know that Holly's told me about her and Bradley.
What's been going on between them.
And, well, it doesn't take a genius to work out what you must be thinking right now.
And what's that, Mr Faircroft? That I did it.
I mean, it wasn't looking good for me to start with.
But now, it gives me motive, doesn't it? It does if we find out you knew about the affair.
Which is why I'm here now.
To look you in the eye and swear on my life I had no idea that was going on behind my back.
I didn't know, Inspector.
He didn't do it.
That's great, thanks for your help.
Sir, I spoke with the guy who runs the locksmith the victim visited.
Strange No, go on.
The day before he was murdered, Bradley Faircroft bought the exact same make of padlock Connor used on his locker.
Now, why would he do that? No, they're the only two.
Look, someone is setting me up here.
Unless that was the plan all along.
No evidence of it being picked or forced in any way.
If that was the case, it turns everything else upside down.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit it'd be convenient for Connor to disappear out my life.
I can't bloody believe you'd do this to me! I can't believe it! Right.
Are you saying someone doctored the voicemail message? Holly, you left your phone.
Oh, thanks, Dee.
And if that did happen, Florence It means we've been looking for a motive for murder all this time.
When there wasn't one.
Yes! No, no, wait.
This doesn't explain the victim's blood we found on the 5-wood golf club recovered from the crime scene.
Sir.
Sarge.
They found a fingerprint on the 5-wood.
And? Who did it belong to? Ha-ha! DS Cassell, we have our answer.
Right, come on, let's round up the suspects, people.
We're right behind you, Inspector.
Er, Marlon, you can't go like that.
Well, the glue is still drying on my other trainer, so Let's see what's in the lost-property cupboard, yeah? From the start of this case, there have been two significant pieces of evidence that contradict each other.
On the one hand, we have a voicemail message left by the victim at six o'clock, which unequivocally points to Connor Faircroft as his brother's killer.
Then, on the other hand, there is the CCTV footage that shows Mr Faircroft in an entirely different location, smoking a cigarette at the same time as the murder.
A man can't be in two places at once.
So which one do we believe? Which one do we trust? Well, the truth is, when Bradley left that message, he wasn't being attacked by Connor.
He wasn't being attacked by anyone, as a matter of fact.
He was alone.
And the message was just a very convincing bit of play-acting.
A voicemail intended to make you think that something terrible was happening.
It's me, Bradley.
Connor, what are you doing? Seriously, Connor Because the plan, all along, was for Bradley to frame Connor for the attack.
Isn't that right, Holly? You what? Hol? What they on about? Just before six o'clock that evening, Bradley contrived for he and Connor to be in the clubhouse office, arguing.
At the same time, having purposely left the raffle tickets in the office, Holly, you made sure Desreta went to collect them.
Raffle tickets.
Must be in the office.
I'll go and get them.
And in so doing, you ensured that there was a witness to the heated exchange between Connor and Bradley only minutes before the attack supposedly took place.
Bradley headed to the first tee - where, as we said, he left the incriminating message.
Then, shortly after six, Holly snuck out to the first tee to proceed with the boldest part of the plan.
To implicate Connor and make everyone think the voicemail message was real, Bradley needed to look like he'd been attacked.
And so, with Bradley's encouragement Right, this is it.
.
.
you took a golf club Go on, swing.
.
.
and you struck him across the head.
It was just meant to bruise him.
He wasn't meant to be hurt by it - not seriously.
I thought he was all right.
I didn't have time to stay.
I had to go through with the rest of the plan.
Which involved the final piece of evidence incriminating Connor.
The weapon being left in his own locker.
A locker which only he had access to.
So how did you manage that? We know from a receipt we found in Bradley's possessions, that he bought an identical padlock to the one Connor used.
We also know that they both played golf together that afternoon.
So I can only assume that Bradley switched Connor's padlock while he wasn't looking.
Unwittingly, after he showered.
Connor closed that padlock, assuming it was his own.
So that when you entered the locker room later that night, Holly, you were able to open it using the keys Bradley gave you, place the bloodied golf club inside the locker, and then lock Connor's own padlock on it.
Now, combined with the voice message and Bradley's own testimony when he regained consciousness, the weapon in that locker would have been more than enough to ensure a GBH charge.
Which is what you wanted all along.
Right? What do you mean? Why would you want that, Hol? Because I wanted to leave you, Con.
To go away with Brad, try and find somehappiness in my life.
And get me locked up at the same time? All the debt you've got us into - it's my responsibility, as well.
I can't just walk away from that, can I? Was that the plan all along, then? To pay it off while Connor was in prison, and then move on with the rest of your life? Yeah, but that was never going to happen as long as you were still around, Con.
We were never going to be straight.
It wasn't enough for you to destroy yourself.
You had to take me and the business down, as well, with you, didn't you? All I wanted was to escape.
To get away from you.
That's why I did it.
He was never meant to die.
I need some space.
All right, Connor? Er, yeah, yeah, I'll I'll be all right.
Just a bit, er .
.
dazed right now.
Yeah, I understand.
Listen, er I know it was you.
Sorry? We know it was you that killed Bradley.
You see, there's something I didn't mention before.
The set of golf clubs that we found next to the victim's body - well, my very diligent sergeant checked them all for traces of blood.
Even though we already believed we had the murder weapon in our possession.
See, what if there were two weapons? The driver used by your wife to knock Bradley unconscious I thought he was all right.
I didn't have time to stay.
.
.
and the 5-wood that was used to murder him.
The one with the single fingerprint on it.
Your fingerprint.
See, Holly didn't accidentally kill Bradley - she just knocked him unconscious.
Which was always the plan.
It was you that finished him off, wasn't it? Because your own brother was having an affair with your wife.
The only thing I can't work out is how and when you discovered they were having a relationship.
I always knew.
From day one.
Before they even realised.
The way he looked at her.
The way she was around him.
I knew right away it was them that was supposed to be together.
But I loved her.
I thought, "Get a ring on her finger.
Have a kid.
"It'll sort itself out.
" And here we are.
That's why you both kept your distance these past 16 years.
When I told you at the police station that I didn't know they were having an actual affair, I wasn't lying.
But I knew it was coming.
That's why, after you'd smoked a cigarette and worked yourself up into an agitated state, when you came across your brother, lying unconscious, you decided to stop him from ever having her.
I didn't know what had happened, when I saw Bradley lying there.
Thought he'd been mugged or something.
He was hurt but still breathing.
I was going to call an ambulance.
And thenmy thoughts cleared, and I realised what I could do.
Seeing them both .
.
brought it all back again .
.
how right he was for her, and how wrong I was.
And it worked.
Didn't it? I won, Inspector.
I beat him.
OK, Connor Connor Faircroft, I am arresting you for the murder of Bradley Faircroft.
Four more beers, si'l vous plait, Catherine.
Oh.
So, Neville's back.
That's a good sign, no? It's good.
Better.
We're going to be fine.
I'm pleased.
Oh.
Commissioner! Yes, sir.
All done and dusted.
Er, OK, yes, of course.
No, no, we'll We'll be over there right now.
Here we go.
Er, well, actually, Florence, the Commissioner wants to have a word with us now.
So I'm afraid the beer is going to have to wait.
Did he say what it was about? Apparently, he'll tell us when we get there.
See you guys later.
More for us.
Got to love the Commissioner, right? So those trainers.
They were bootleg, weren't they? What on Earth made you think that, Sarge? Marlon .
.
why'd you not tell me about having a different past .
.
for a police officer? You heard about that? I'm your Sergeant, Marlon.
I was going to find out.
Justwanted to know why you didn't tell me yourself.
It's nothing to be ashamed of.
And, if you ask me, it gives you some skills most officers would kill to have.
I guess .
.
I kind of liked working with somebody that didn't know, for once.
You know - treating me like I'm a proper police officer.
But, Marlon, I only found out about your criminal record a day ago.
And up until then, as far as I was concerned, you WERE a proper police officer.
You might feel like you're carrying some baggage, but no-one else can see that.
Though .
.
doesn't mean there aren't some kinks we can iron out.
Like where you buy your footwear from.
Inspector.
DS Cassell.
Is everything OK, sir? Erm, sit down, please.
These are crime scene photos taken on Jamaica .
.
of Otis Benjamin.
As you know, he was murdered on his return there, after being released as a suspect from our separate investigation, here on Saint Marie.
News of Otis Benjamin - found on a beach .
.
shot dead.
Have they arrested anyone yet? No.
But .
.
the Jamaican police has evidence to suggest that the shooting is connected to this woman.
Miranda Priestley.
You know her? She's made a name for herself across the Caribbean.
But not in a good way.
She's a drug trafficker, right? Well, she's been linked to a number of murders and assaults.
But nothing has ever been proven.
Witnesses tend to disappear when asked to give evidence against her.
Ruthless doesn't even begin to touch it.
But what has this to do with us, sir? The team on Jamaica are looking for an officer from an outlying island to go undercover.
There is, erm, a possible "in" working with the Priestley family.
You meanme? I discussed it with Inspector Parker, and we feel you are more than capable.
We agreed that you are definitely ready for something like this.
It's just how you feel about being involved in such a risky operation.
You don't need me to tell you .
.
you're entering into a very dangerous world.
So, tell us .
.
how would you feel about going undercover, DS Cassell? Welcome to our family.
Welcome! But we know from the video that he wasn't stabbed inside the plane, which means The sky is our crime scene? We need to know what happened on that plane.
It's the only way.
Sir, where are you going? I'm going to inspect the crime scene.
Do you think, maybe, this place, what happened here, that's what's stopping you? I really want this job.
Sooner or later, you are going to have to deal with what's holding you back.
Are you actually going to do a skydive, sir? Look, if the crime scene's in mid-air, someone's going to have to go and inspect it.
