Face Off (2011) s11e03 Episode Script
Monster High
1 McKenzie: Previously on Face Off All-Stars You will do something that has never been done before on the show.
You will be applying both makeups to one model.
- Oh, cool.
- Oh, sweet.
McKenzie: Cat and Niko's magnificent makeup brought them to victory, but Stella and Jasmine fell short and were the first All-Star team sent home.
And in tonight's immunity challenge, the artists toy with one of America's favorite franchises.
Monster High.
[all cheering.]
I don't think I've ever been so excited.
We are not conceptualizing.
You're drawing a picture.
We feel like we're fitting a square peg in a round hole.
There's only so much you can polish a turd.
- It's just not looking right.
- I don't care.
Let's take it the fuck off.
There's no way that we can put that on the reveal stage.
We're doing things differently tonight.
Holy shit.
McKenzie: Find out what happens next.
This is Face Off All-Stars.
[cheering.]
[exciting music.]
- Where are we? - Mattel.
- This is so awesome.
- Toys! It's the morning of our next challenge, and we're at Mattel Headquarters.
Like, whoa.
And there's McKenzie standing in the middle of a giant Mattel logo.
- Hey, guys.
all: - Hi.
Welcome to Mattel.
- Whoo.
- Yes.
The creative masterminds at Mattel have entertained children and adults with the world's most beloved toys and dolls for generations.
We're very lucky to be here today to help them bring one of their most popular franchises to life-- Monster High.
[all cheering.]
I don't think I've ever been so excited.
I'm a huge Monster High fan, so I'm, like, pinching myself.
So excited! This is Natasha Berling, VP of design here at Mattel.
[applause.]
She's going to tell you all about the incredible world of Monster High.
Monster High is not your ordinary high school.
It's a school of teenage monsters that celebrates individuality and kindness.
The school's students include the daughters of Dracula, the werewolf, the mummy, and more, but even though they're teenage monsters, they still face the everyday challenges of high school.
But more in a monstery kind of way.
They experience the humor of awkward moments like when your arm falls off in mad science class-- - [laughing.]
- Which is totally embarrassing.
The fun of school events like, "Will the new werewolf ask me to the prom?" - Aww.
- It's a place that celebrates their unique and distinct differences and allows them to really be themselves.
Now, Natasha and her team have toyed with the idea of bringing realistic versions of their characters to the big screen, but they'd like to get a better sense of what they might look like.
So, that's where you guys come in.
- Whoo.
- Yes.
For this week's Spotlight Challenge, you'll choose a doll from Mattel's Monster High franchise and transform it into a realistic character fit for a feature film.
- Oh, my God.
- Yes.
I am very familiar with Monster High toys and anything involving that, so it's gonna be a fun challenge.
This is awesome.
Now, Natasha, what advice do you have for these guys in order to help them bring these characters to life? My advice would be to really embrace what makes each character so unique-- their stories and their signature attributes-- and play with that.
But feel free to really push their styles.
- Cool.
- Thank you very much.
- Of course.
- All right, guys.
So, as a reminder, there is immunity on the line for this week's winning team, which means you cannot be eliminated next week.
High-stakes stuff here, guys.
Now.
I know this is a very daunting task.
So, Natasha and I have arranged for a little tutoring.
- Yay.
- Yay.
Two of the brand's lead designers will be stopping by to help you get to know your characters, and give you feedback on your design ideas.
Does that sound good? all: Yeah.
- That's really cool.
- All right, guys.
It's time to head inside to the Monster High gallery to choose your character you're gonna bring to life, and when you get there, I want you to grab a doll - and start working on a concept.
- Have fun.
Good luck.
Bye.
[techno music.]
- Oh, God.
- Ah! Oh, my God! It's a mad dash and my heart's racing, but I grab Draculaura and I am so happy.
Draculaura.
Ooh.
Draculaura is Dracula's daughter.
She's super-cute, fun, girly, and she has really cute fangs.
I like her collar, too.
- I like her earrings.
- Mm-hmm.
She doesn't have many distinct features we can use prosthetics for, so Tyler and I will sculpt a collar, fabricate her hairstyle, and then fabricate some accessories that are really important to the character.
- Hello, hello.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- Hi.
I'm Natalie.
- Tyler.
Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
So, we got this wonderful character here.
- So, she is a vampire.
- Mm-hmm.
A lot of the bat wings and a lot of, like, webs are really important.
Pink is her signature color.
- Okay.
Okay.
- Super-girly.
- Like, frilly and lace.
- Oh, you're gonna-- - you're gonna do well.
- I'm super excited.
- That's her.
- Yeah.
- Good luck.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Lagoona Blue.
"My biggest pet peeve is anyone who treats the ocean like his or her own personal trash can.
- Everyone's my best friend.
" - Aww.
- She's a sweetheart.
- She is.
I know nothing about "Monster High.
" - Nor do I.
- Yeah.
This is gonna be a tough one.
We should definitely have, like, gills on the side of the neck.
- I think so.
- Hello.
- I'm Becca.
- Hi.
Cig.
- Hi, Becca.
- Nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
I'm George.
- Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you.
We were thinking keep with the pretty face but sort of accentuate the cheek bones, do some scaling on the forehead, and incorporate fin ears.
That'd be pretty, yes.
And if you want to play this up, in the past we added webbing detail in between her fingers.
Yeah, we've got that.
That's-- that's something.
I think it'll be great.
All right.
Well, good luck to you guys.
both: - Thank you.
- Bye.
[upbeat music.]
What did you guys get? both: We got Cleo de Nile.
- Daughter of the mummy.
- Oh, fun.
I am so excited for this challenge.
I have to admit that I think Keaghlan's probably more excited than I am, and I'm very excited.
"Cleo de Nile is the personification of a teenage girl with a pedigree.
Her superiority is a birthright and preferential treatment is expected.
Just ask all 10,000 of her servants.
" I feel like Cleo's one of the harder dolls to adapt because she is so human in her design.
Really would love to incorporate kind of that, you know, wrapped mummy texture.
She has bandages on one arm and on one leg, so we want to do a character that has them and make her a little more monster than just, you know, a human wrapped up in bandages.
- Hi, ladies.
both: - Hi.
- Nice to meet you.
I'm Becca.
- Good to meet you, too.
- Keaghlan.
Nice to meet you.
- Hi.
- You got Cleo.
- Yeah.
I'm so excited.
She's one of my favorites.
- Oh, she's your favorite? - Yeah.
- Awesome.
- Okay, give us all the tips.
All right.
So, if you notice where the wrappings are, there's a little bit of gold shimmer.
- Mm-hmm.
- Oh, cool.
Do you think that Cleo would have Egyptian, like, hieroglyphs or anything, like, on the wraps? Like, we can incorporate that as a detail? - Yes.
- Okay, cool.
It is a wrapping, but we wanted to add that monstery detail, so we did embed it into her skin a little bit.
Just to say, we're both really huge Monster High fans.
- We're really, really big fans.
- Yay.
Thank you for being fans.
- So excited.
- Okay.
Good luck.
Thank you so much for having us.
both: - Thank you.
- Thank you.
This is a weird shape to deal with.
This underbite while at the same time making it look pretty.
We're gonna find it difficult to turn Abbey Bominable into a live-action character because she has human features, and the Abominable Snowman is simian.
- I see you got Abbey.
- Yes, we did.
- We do.
- She's very blunt and very direct and very straight-out.
Would it be out of character of her to snowboard or? No.
She loves to snowboard, yes.
Okay.
Very cool.
Is it in a yeti realm or is it-- Oh, yes.
More yeti.
She's definitely more yeti.
It is in the yeti realm.
Okay.
Yes.
Thank you.
Nice meeting you.
Very nice meeting you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Good to meet you as well.
- Nice meeting you.
- This is gonna be tough.
We are not conceptualizing right now.
You are drawing a picture.
We need to decide if we're gonna put the simian features in, or are we going to take the model and do really subtle changes.
Hey, guys.
Let's go back to the lab.
We have a few ideas in mind going back to the lab, but we by no means have a complete concept.
So, it'll be a quiet van ride back.
[upbeat music.]
- So-- - I'm thinking more like this.
More like that? Okay.
Perfect.
I'm really excited about this challenge because I love mixing special effects and beauty makeup together.
Clawdeen Wolf is the daughter of a werewolf.
She's a fashionista.
She is all about her big hair, and we definitely want to keep the makeup very true to the doll.
But we do want to add a little bit of a wolf nose to help sell the fact that she's a werewolf.
- Do you like the nose? - Yeah.
I like the nose.
I like the nose a lot.
It's very subtle.
I like it.
We can probably just leave her natural chin and then maybe sculpt, like, a little piece that looks like the bone and then it-- it blends off right there.
Ben and I have Skelita Calaveras.
She's a skeleton.
Kind of a "Day of the Dead"-influenced doll.
Everything flat will be easier to mold.
Our idea is very low-profile bones, and the way to achieve that is to sculpt them flat.
So, we want to do all flat molds and all silicone.
So, this gives us the freedom to sculpt the pieces individually and use her natural face to be the negative parts of it.
Something like that? Yeah.
I like that.
Gage and I have Venus McFlytrap.
She is this little punk rocker who is the daughter of the plant monster, and I'm really inspired about Venus' multiple vines that seem to be wrapping around her forearms and her ankles.
I'm sculpting enough vines on this flat mold for one arm and one leg, but we're gonna run this multiple times so we have enough for the whole body.
You definitely can't go any closer.
- Like, you have to go there.
- Yeah.
- Yeah? - Sounds good.
- You want to work on the arms? - Yeah.
- Cool.
- Then switch.
For our Lagoona Blue character, we're doing something a little different than I think most people are doing.
We're going really creature-y.
What are you making over there, George? I'm just scratching plaster off of mine.
Nice.
The doll has these little fish fin ears.
She's got some fins on her arms and her legs.
She's blue, so, rather than just doing fish ears and a human face, we're giving her these big cheek bone ridges that invoke gills, and then we're giving her actual gills on her neck.
We're gonna give her a slightly downturned mouth, but then big, voluptuous, feminine lips.
We're venturing into uncharted waters.
If it's gills, it might be a little bit overkill.
- Overgill.
- Overgill? - Are you worried? - Yes.
As the day is progressing, Adam and I are worrying and stressing out about a face.
Is it too pronounced? Abbey Bominable is the daughter of the Abominable Snowman, but the moment you slap a simian nose on a cute face, it becomes not cute anymore.
I don't know.
It feels like fitting a square peg in a round hole.
There's We're so limited.
This is really beating me up and it's eating up my time today.
And I know if I can't get this thing right, it's just gonna bite me in the ass.
Do you think that these are doing a disservice to the design? Adam and I decide we're gonna go with a simian face because that's really the only route to go and suggest that she's the daughter of the Abominable Snowman.
Now, the trick is gonna be to make that cute.
So, now we're dealing with going around the edge of a mouth.
That's true.
I am truly looking forward to Mr.
Westmore's advice.
[upbeat music.]
Hello, everyone.
- Hey.
- Hi.
We wanted to go more with a really subtle face piece route.
We're gonna incorporate ear tips that are gonna be shown through the wig, and-- Well, we're gonna put it on her actual ears.
- On her actual ears.
- Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
'Cause if you look at the doll, it actually - pokes out of the wig.
- Well, you know, thing is, make sure they're big enough to use, because they start putting hair on it, all you're gonna see possibly is little tips sticking through.
Little longer would be better than too short.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Than too short.
Yeah.
We are doing Cleo, uh, De Nile.
She's the daughter of the Mummy.
Now, you don't think you're gonna have a problem with a whole face? - You're comfortable with it? - Yeah.
With a whole face, just make sure that all the edges have to be really great.
- Okay.
- What is your idea? Venus is actually part flytrap.
We're also having to customize a wig for her 'cause half of her head is shaved.
It's a very intricate part of the design.
So, we're gonna bald cap half the head here.
- Just taking your-- - Sculpting.
Sculpting your piece like that.
Then you just have to pull back her hair and tack that over the top of it.
That's a great suggestion.
Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
- Good luck.
- Thanks.
- We chose Abbey Bominable.
You know what I'd be careful with on this is although you're trying to do the simian with the nose, she's high school, she's pretty, and wrinkling up the nose, I don't know if that's gonna work that well.
Yeah.
Your nose has to come out a little bit.
This pulling it all the way down the cheek here, it might be adding something that's gonna wrinkle on you.
I have to really think about this because I may just have to completely scrap this face piece and come up with a new design.
I just don't know if we have the time.
Draculaura being one of the most simplistic dolls, we're not doing a face piece.
So, I'm creating bone protrusions coming out of the collar that will be reminiscent of bat wings.
- The longest part? Okay.
- Perfect.
I am using a material called friendly plastic.
I pinch it and shape it.
I want to create, like, your fingers have the bone shape to it to really bring out the anatomy of a bat wing.
It gives the illusion that she is transitioning into a bat.
Ooh.
While Keaghlan is working on sculpting out the face, I'm going to sculpt bandages that will go on her left arm and right leg and then go up onto her neck.
So, what I'm doing is I'm basically just sculpting a flat piece, sketching out where I want the bandages, and then taking burlap and pressing it into the clay to create that fabric texture.
Are we gonna do any hieroglyphics-- Oh, shit.
I totally forgot about that.
I want to impress Natasha.
I want to show her that I love the dolls and I can bring one to life.
Gonna need to get these molded pretty soon, I think, Mr.
Neutron.
The arm and leg pieces are looking pretty cool.
So, we want to get those molded and ready for foam so that we can start pre-painting and figuring out the fins for tomorrow.
[techno music.]
Guys, 30 minutes.
Go, ninja.
Go, ninja, go.
That's time, everyone.
How'd you do? Good.
all: Whoo! Adam and I have had a chance to reevaluate my sculpture last night.
Now, I have an idea of how to finesse the face sculpture a little better.
So, removing the cheeks is my starting point.
I'm also moving the eyebrows down to disguise her eyebrows, giving us the option in the future to draw them in if we want to.
Meanwhile, Adam continues to fabricate the handbag for this mammoth and when I get a chance, I'll start sculpting the mammoth face, and then we'll tag-team the mold.
That's cuter.
[gasps.]
Turkey's ready.
Ben and I have a lot of work ahead of us.
We need to finish the arm and leg molds.
I have to de-mold the chest and neck and run them in silicone.
You think you're done with the sculpt part of it? You just want me to texture? Um, I would look it over.
Mr.
Westmore has concerns about the face.
When you put a foam latex face on, if you don't blend it 100% realistically, it's gonna read as fake.
I'm gonna really take my time when I mold that.
Okay.
I'm gonna hop in and start working on refining details, because unless this thing is absolutely perfect, it's gonna read as a rubber face, and we want this kid to look realistic.
Where are those fins gonna go? On her forearms and on her calves.
Cool.
To make the fins, we're gonna use hot glue for the spines and then brush latex over top of it.
Hot glue is rigid but flexible at the same time, so they'll be able to move but still keep their shape.
That's what their asking for.
It's a realistic version of exactly what's on the doll.
Yeah.
Comes to bangs Draculaura has black hair with pink stripes.
So, I'm gonna stack one wig on top of another and I cut the bangs off another wig to make a clip-on piece.
Oh, cool.
Then I'm gonna lay pink hair into it and it looks great.
- Tyler.
- Yeah? - That's the route.
- Oh, that looks pretty.
Oh, yeah.
That's all kinds of shimmery.
George and I aren't really into pretty things, so this beauty makeup, it's gonna be a challenge.
Come here.
You're gonna get gussied up.
All right.
Gussy me.
We're actually ahead of schedule, so why not practice doing some beauty makeup? Close your eyes.
[playful classical music.]
There's only so much you can polish a turd until it's a waste of turd polish.
This is completely new territory.
I start playing with some of the things that I've never once touched in my kit.
Eyeshadow? Mascara? What are these things? Oh, God.
I look like a clown hooker.
Yeah, well, I'm not done yet.
So then George decides he's gonna try his hand and do my beauty makeup.
[playful music.]
Honestly, it's pretty helpful because I don't know how to do beauty makeup and we have all these cool eyeshadows and blush and things that girls put on their face, and-- Things that we previously used as paperweights.
- Yeah.
Not bad.
- Yeah.
- Now I know what to do with it.
- Yeah.
And it's all because of your beautiful eyes.
- Well, thanks.
- After this, you want to go have a couple brews? Fix a carburetor? [grandiose music.]
[laughter.]
[techno music.]
Have a snowboard, and then she's all like this, or whatever they do.
Abbey Bominable has this pet mastodon.
So, Adam's making good progress on the carrying case.
I start sculpting the mammoth face.
I think we've really nailed the design.
Oh, God.
I've never styled a wig before, but I wanted to tackle this thing all on my own.
Oh, you've got this part here.
We got to fix that.
I know I want a big swoop on the side, so I'm teasing the hair at the top and really matting it down 'til it's, like, super-high.
Girl, you gonna be the belle of the ball, right? Honey, you gonna make an impression.
Everybody's doing such cool stuff.
- You like him? - I really like him.
Venus McFlytrap has a pet plant named Chewlian, which is this adorable Venus flytrap that she carries around.
What would Freddie be without his glove or Jason without his machete? It's the same thing here.
That's the mindset you have to have when you're talking about taking an action figure and turning it into a literal character.
15 minutes, everybody.
That's time, everyone.
[rock music.]
- Whoo.
- Ooh, yes.
Get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it, get it.
- Look at that.
- Is it good? - It's flawless.
- Look at those ears.
Oh, they came out great.
My gosh.
Wow.
This is really wrecked.
Yeah.
Our face and headpiece are completely demolished.
They look chopped up and cut up and big tear across the center of the forehead.
This is all bad, and fixing the pieces is gonna cost us a lot of time, but we have to get it done.
It's just gonna be a lot of repair work.
[techno music.]
How are ya? We finally get to work together.
Yay.
I'm gonna start by pin-curling your hair and Tyler will fit your teeth.
Yep.
Dude, these are so ridiculously thin.
- The edges? - Yeah.
- That's good.
- It's amazing.
Our silicone comes out perfect.
It's got great edges.
Ben starts doing the bald cap and I start applying the arms.
Surprise.
These silicone pieces are very fragile.
The edges are paper-thin.
So, it's just gonna be a lot of meticulous gluing and really getting them to fit, but it's going well so far.
It looks cool.
It looks really cool.
I think we nailed it.
- Emily, is this cute? - Yeah.
That is cute.
Okay.
It's cute, Logan.
And can I have you hold this? Cig starts the application process on the face, and then we move on to gluing down the arms and the legs.
- Is right here good? - I think it's great.
Well, then, I think it's stuck.
And then, we start painting.
It's looking pretty cool.
Have you ever had webbed fingers on the show before? What a coincidence because I've never done them before.
Yeah.
Like hieroglyphs.
The bandages look great.
They look like bandages.
But I'm nervous about the face.
It looks very fake.
It looks like a rubber mask.
It's always hard to tell with latex because it is so opaque, so I'm like, "Well, maybe once it's painted it'll look more realistic.
" So, this is Aquacolor.
Draculaura is, like, a pale bubblegum pink.
To make it realistic, we need to add a lot of flesh tone, so we base her out in Kryolan Aquacolor, and then we go over with an alcohol makeup to soften, and we splatter a lot of different tones.
But the beauty makeup has to be perfect because we didn't sculpt a face.
All the dolls have these big huge eyes, so this beauty makeup is really important to make my model's eyes look huge.
I use Kryolan's gel eyeliner to do a nice huge wing line to help sell the fact that she's got these big doll-like eyes.
Can you look down at this corner for me? As I'm doing the beauty makeup, Niko starts laying down the fur transfers.
I apply the fur transfer and I peel it off.
I don't think this looking that good.
How do you feel it looks? - Not clean and not pretty.
- I agree.
So, we are going to do something different, and I take some pieces of hair and start laying some hair on the wrist so that when the Last Look, I can be able to curl them and make them look a little bit more stylish.
I think that looks better, definitely.
[fast techno music.]
I'm worried she's looking a little too draggy.
She's definitely looking draggy.
She looks like a drag queen, but not a good one.
Not a pretty one.
Like an old, haggard drag queen that's had too many one-night shows.
Keaghlan, how would you feel about removing the face? - It's just not looking right.
- I don't care.
Let's take it the fuck off.
I don't like it.
I don't like it either.
- That's time, everyone.
- It'll be fine.
It'll be fine.
Don't worry about it.
I was gonna cry.
We have to.
No, no, no.
Don't worry about it.
The face just needs to go.
There's no way that we can put that on the reveal stage.
I think that that's the right decision, and even though it's gonna cause a lot of work for us in Last Looks, it's still better than sending that face out.
[dramatic music.]
Let's get that mixed.
What colors do you want to do around the eyes, George? Light.
Since Cig and I are both equally in the dark about what a beauty makeup is, we tag team it.
I think that looks nice.
- I'd bring him home.
- Yeah.
It's coming together even better than I had hoped.
We just need to get that turd off your face.
It's definitely nerve-racking to have to remove the face in Last Looks, but I think if we can get it removed, and with the magic of beauty makeup on her, we can definitely save this piece.
Let me know if it pulls too much, hon.
Her whole body is white.
It needs something, so I've shade in the deeper parts of the bones and it just ties everything together.
Oh, my God.
I'm so glad I just did this.
- Oh, yeah.
- It's great.
Does that look okay to you? We're just painting as fast as we can and I'm worried because I feel like we've neglected the beauty makeup, which for the Monster High dolls is really important.
15 minutes.
- That's time.
- Okay.
I'm not a fan of this makeup.
It's got some cool aspects in it, but not thrilled.
I'm really glad that this is an immunity challenge.
I think we would be going home.
Just high five it out.
High five it out.
[suspenseful music.]
I'm completely caught off-guard.
Glenn, Ve, and Neville are not on the stage.
I'm like, "Who are these people?" We walk out onstage, but Glenn, Ve, and Neville are not there.
Who are these people? Good evening, everyone.
- Hi.
- Hello.
You guys look a little shocked.
all: Yeah.
I'm sure you're all wondering just what exactly is going on here.
- Mm-hmm.
- Yes.
Well, we're gonna do things just a little bit differently tonight.
As you know, Hollywood typically uses focus groups to gauge the public's opinion or perception of specific projects.
So, for the first time ever on Face Off, the judges will not be weighing in on tonight's makeups.
Wow.
Instead, we have gathered a focus group filled with eight Monster High super-fans to help choose tonight's winner.
Cool.
This is really cool.
But it's very nerve-racking because nobody knows these characters like the hardcore fans.
And joining us once again is Natasha Berling, vice president of design at Mattel.
Natasha, so great to see you again.
Thank you.
Nice to be here.
[applause.]
Before we get started, I do have another surprise for you.
Oh, great.
In addition to immunity from elimination in next week's Spotlight Challenge, tonight's winning team will also receive an incredible prize package from Mattel.
- Oh, awesome.
- Sweet.
Ooh, that's awesome.
First, tonight's winning team will receive an amazing array of Monster High products.
Cool.
In addition, we will be highlighting the winners on all of Monster High's social media channels.
- Whoa.
- Oh, cool.
To be highlighted in the Monster High social media would be so cool because I know so many young girls look up to those dolls and that franchise.
That's so exciting.
What an incredible way to celebrate a win.
All right, guys.
Let's just get to it.
For this week's Spotlight Challenge, we asked you to choose a doll from Mattel's Monster High franchise and transform it into a realistic character fit for a feature film.
Without further ado, let's take a look at your Monster High makeups.
[upbeat music.]
The plant looks really cute.
I'm still not thrilled about the paint job, but I think the wig really helps her pull off her iconic look.
She's fun, and pretty, and, like, man, I'm-- I'm really proud of this.
We're still not completely happy with how the hair looks, but overall picture, I think all the hard work that we did paid off.
This was really out of our wheelhouse as a team, and we did it.
It looks cool.
She looks like a doll.
Evan and I are both really excited.
We managed to capture a lot of personality.
She looks like she just stepped out of a Dia de los Muertos party.
I am so happy that we made the decisions that we made even though they were tough ones.
It looks a million times better.
We did absolute justice to this character.
She is Draculaura in real life, and it is so awesome, and Tyler and I are looking back at the focus group, and we hope they like it.
All right, guys.
So, our close-up inspection is also going to work a bit differently tonight.
This time, you're actually gonna get to hear what our focus group has to say about your characters while you wait back in the makeup room.
Oh.
If you would please head back there now and we'll get started.
- Thank you, guys.
- Thank you.
- See you in a bit.
- This is cool.
I have never had anything of mine evaluated by a focus group before, and it worries me.
Okay, panel.
What don't you head on over to the circle? [upbeat music.]
- Get it, girlfriend.
- Oh, no.
This is terrifying.
Could you do your chin up just a-- Yeah.
- Yeah.
That's beautiful.
- Oh, yeah.
Yeah, it looks much better up close.
Oh, see? He knows.
The paint on her face feels a bit flat green.
It looks a little more mint, too.
Like it's a different color than the rest.
I'm not a huge fan of the way the eyebrows are painted on.
Sister, sit down.
[laughter.]
We know exactly who she is.
She looks exactly like the regular dolls.
See? Bam.
all: Thank you.
Thanks, Venus.
- Oh.
- I love her.
The metallic touches on her face are really cool.
I like that guy.
This, like, elevates Monster High to, like, new heights to me.
This is making it realistic to me, it's like-- both: Yeah.
It's different than the doll, but it makes it realistic.
Like, that's how she would look.
Oh, my ghoul.
I like that she has a canine nose.
It looks like a wolf's nose.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Okay.
We have to talk about that fur.
- Yeah.
What is that? - Oh, the fur.
It just feels like they just plugged it in there.
- Yeah, it's like shoved in-- - Yeah.
- I love it.
- I liked it.
She was my favorite one when it first came out.
So, what about the nose? I don't understand her nose either.
I appreciate the attempt at doing something different, but I feel like the execution came off a little too Voldemort.
Yeah.
It's not working for me.
[laughter.]
[suspenseful music.]
I really love what they did with the bones on the arms - and the neck.
- Whoo! It's just really, really cool.
I do want to say that she's so glamorous, though.
Like, they really made a skeleton look like a beauty queen.
It's scary knowing there's no face prosthetic on our model.
I just hope the Monster High super-fans are gonna like her.
I'm very intrigued to know what the Monster High super-fans have to say.
I'm definitely a little concerned.
- I like the bandaging.
I like-- - The hieroglyphics.
The hieroglyphics are cool.
I do see Cleo.
- They got it.
- Definitely.
Yeah.
Hey, from what we had, to what is on there? - She's so cute.
- Ooh-lah-D! She looks so happy.
Definitely what Draculaura is.
Cute and happy, like, all the time.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
The bat wings that we thought were part of the dress are on her clavicles.
- Oh, they're coming out of her.
- They're coming out of her.
- That is clever.
- She looks like a little Disney princess meets Draculaura.
- Yeah.
- Super cute.
Okay, let's find out what these guys thought about your Monster High creations.
Emily and Tyler.
Evan and Ben.
Cig and George.
Congratulations, you created the focus group's favorite makeups, and they do have a few questions for you.
The rest of you can head back to the makeup room.
Thank you.
So awesome.
[suspenseful music.]
Emily and Tyler, please step to the center.
Hey, guys.
- Hello.
- Hey.
So, tell us about your take on Draculaura.
One thing that we noticed about our doll is that she was very young and very sweet, and she was having a sweet 1,600.
So, we really wanted to play on that idea.
- It's very cute.
- Thank you.
Draculaura's my favorite, and her cuteness comes out of everything from her hair and then all her accessories.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
You hit all the Draculaura things.
She has that Victorian Gothic Lolita aesthetic.
- That's what we were going for.
- It's a balloon bouquet.
You've got everything going on.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
You really did a beautiful job of capturing Draculaura's essence.
I can see as soon as she came out that it was a party and she was very festive and really delivered on that bubblegum goth aesthetic that Draculaura has.
- Nice job.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
- Emily and Tyler, please step back.
Thanks.
Ben and Evan, please step up.
Tell us about your Skelita.
- She is, um-- - A skeleton.
- She's a skeleton-- - Which was a very scary thing to do because you have to subtract and we're adding, so-- We wanted to put more color in her face but-- - We ran out of time.
- Yeah.
You made a skeleton look gorgeous.
both: Thank you.
Skelita is my favorite character.
It's what got me to collect Monster High dolls.
I really do appreciate that it stayed very true to the character.
The prosthetics on the hands that look like bone, I mean, I was wondering how you guys were gonna pull this one off, and I think that we were all really nicely surprised.
- It was very well-done.
- Mm-hmm.
Definitely a massive amount of props.
It's not distracting.
It doesn't look cheesy.
It actually adds to the character so well, and with the glitter to give it that sugar skull feeling, it's just really impressive.
both: Thank you.
You really took the time to add the details that make her who she is, and it's evident.
- It's really beautiful.
- Thank you so much.
All right, guys.
Please step back.
- Thanks, girl.
- Thank you.
Cig and George, please step forward.
All right, so tell us about your Lagoona Blue.
We really wanted to take this character from the doll form to make her what we could see the daughter of a sea monster to look like.
- I love her face.
- [laughter.]
I love her face.
Her hair is just so amazing.
It was the first wig this guy has ever styled.
- Yeah.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
- It's so good.
It actually looks like one of her dolls.
She has a little flip thing.
- Cool.
- I love the cheek bones and the metallic touches on her face I think are really good.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Usually, Lagoona is a very sporty character, so I love that you made her glam.
She's my favorite, so kudos to you.
- You did amazing.
- Thank you.
This was one of my favorite looks for sure because you pushed it so much further, and I think you captured the essence of Lagoona but took those liberties, and it really paid off.
both: Thank you.
Cig and George, please step back.
- Thanks, guys.
- Good work.
All right, thank you guys.
Please head back to the makeup room while the focus group deliberates.
- Thank you.
- Thank you, guys.
Yeah.
All right, so, why don't we talk about tonight's makeups? Let's start with Emily and Tyler.
Creatively, I would never have thought to focus on Draculaura's collar and make it a bat wing-inspired piece-- organic.
- Right.
- That was so inspiring.
I do like that they kept her essence.
The sweetness did come through all of that Victorian stuff she had on.
Overall, with the skin tone, I think they had the best.
Nice, even, and beautiful in the face.
If you saw this as a character, would this draw you in to see the movie? I know that we're going for a specific theme for Draculaura, but when I envision Monster High, I envision we're seeing her at school on a casual day, and I just didn't feel that quite there.
All right.
Let's move on to Evan and Ben, who had Skelita.
It translated so well with bone detail on human flesh.
It didn't distract at all.
It actually added to the character, which was really impressive.
Of the three that are up there, I feel like she's the most that was like, "Here's the doll.
Here she is.
" It's exactly the same thing.
And you could tell they spent time on the accessories, too.
The purse and the little necklace-- the skullette that she had on which is important for Monster High.
She was the prettiest, I think.
- I agree.
- I wanted to take her home and put her on my shelf, at the risk of sounding creepy.
Is this a character that would draw you in to see the movie? - Yes.
- Sure.
- Unanimous.
- Oh, yes.
All right.
Well, we can move onto George and Cig and Lagoona Blue.
I loved her face.
I thought she looked really cool.
I thought she looked like a great mix of real sea monster and real pretty high school girl.
Especially, like, the scales.
There's so much work.
There's so many colors.
I was really impressed by the hair, what they did, how they styled it, and the type of material and all the little things that they added.
- So, I really liked it.
- And being super-fans, were you guys cool with it being pushed a little more? I want to see the Monster High movie where this is a Lagoona Blue.
It's fresh, and it elevates the brand.
All right.
Natasha, have you heard enough to choose tonight's winner? - I think so.
- All right.
Let's bring them back out.
[suspenseful music.]
Welcome back, guys.
Thank you so much for bringing these Monster High characters to life.
It was just extraordinary, truly.
- Thank you.
- All right.
So, Natasha, which team has won tonight's challenge? The winning team is So, Natasha, which team has won tonight's challenge? This was a really tough decision.
The winning team is [suspenseful music.]
Cig and George.
Yeah, dude.
Yeah! [applause.]
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
I really appreciate that you pushed it and had fun with it.
She was beautiful.
- Thanks.
- Thank you so much.
We win.
It feels really good.
I think I'm most excited about the social media blast from Mattel.
That's gonna be so cool, and I can't wait to see what all of the fans think about what we did with the character.
Well, Cig and George, congratulations.
As winners of tonight's challenge, you guys have won immunity in next week's Spotlight Challenge along with that fabulous Monster High prize package.
Can't wait to play with some Monster High dolls.
I know.
I'm really excited to get some toys and I'm gonna play with them.
All right, everyone.
Well, great work tonight, and I want to say thank you as well to our focus group.
Why don't you go home and get some rest? I'll see you soon for your next challenge.
- Thank you.
- Thank you, guys.
- Thank you.
- Bye.
Adam and I both know that we have to step it up before we go into our next challenge.
Somebody's going home, and after the past two weeks, we are definitely gonna have to reevaluate our game.
