Death In Paradise (2011) s11e04 Episode Script
Series 11, Episode 4
1
News of Otis Benjamin.
As you know, he was murdered on his return there.
The Jamaican police has evidence to suggest that the shooting is connected to this woman.
Miranda Priestley? She's a drug trafficker.
The team on Jamaica are looking for an officer to go undercover.
You are avoiding me, DS Cassell.
Have they told you what your cover's going to be yet? I'd be working as a live-in au pair.
Do you think, maybe this place, what happened here, that's what's stopping you? I really want this job, but I feel angry with myself for being so afraid.
Sooner or later, you're going to have to deal with what's holding you back.
Ready for this, DS Cassell? Afternoon.
Commissioner! Inspector.
I've just heard from the SIO heading up the undercover operation in Jamaica.
There's been something of a development.
Sir, is Florence all right? She's fine, but yesterday evening, her handler discovered that Miranda Priestley has organised a last-minute business trip.
The surveillance team has been tracking the boat, and it seems Ms Priestley and her entourage are headed here, to Saint Marie.
DS Cassell is with them? Sir, what if someone she knows sees her, blows her cover? It's a hell of a risk.
This is not our operation.
We don't have a say.
Not much of a welcoming committee.
Eh Is Harley Joseph serious about this? Well, I guess we're going to find out, aren't we? Daloris is going to ride with Mum, if that's all right.
Thanks, Celeste.
So, do you know why we're here? If Miranda hasn't told you, then you don't need to know.
Miranda, welcome.
At last, we meet.
Harley.
It's good to be here.
This is my sister, Corine.
Come on in.
There are snacks out on the terrace.
No point discussing business on an empty stomach.
Daloris is ready for bed.
I wondered if Miranda wanted to say goodnight.
They're still at it.
She'll have to settle for her auntie tonight.
Harley, Harley, I'm not leaving until I get what I want.
We're a long way off finding common ground, Miranda.
I'm really not sure where we go from here.
You know, it would be very unfortunate if we couldn't reach an agreement, for both our sakes.
Daloris is in bed if you Not now.
GUNSHO Celeste, what are you doing up? There was a noise and it woke me.
And it sounded like - I don't know - like a gunshot.
Strange.
I didn't hear a thing.
You probably just dreamt it, huh? Yeah.
Yeah, I guess I must have.
Goodnight, Celeste.
Goodnight.
Morning.
Morning, sir.
Victim's one Harley Joseph.
50 years old.
Owned and ran the farm here.
Looking like he took his own life.
Body through there, is it? The farm manager saw Mr Joseph heading down here late last night.
Does it most nights to check the next day's orders, so he thought nothing of it.
Then, when he arrived this morning, couldn't open up because the key was in the lock on the inside.
When he looked through the window, got quite a shock.
And it was him that forced the door? Nothing else he could do except phone us.
Marlon is processing the scene.
I'm going to finish taking the witness's statement.
Thank you.
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS Morning, sir.
Morning, Marlon.
Do you want to talk me through it? No problem, though it's not exactly a brain-buster, this one, sir.
Well, just give me what you've got.
All right, then.
So So, we have a bullet wound to the heart.
Reckon we're talking 9mm calibre, which tallies to the revolver over there .
.
and also with the bullet over here.
The farm manager says they kept the gun here for security reasons, not that they ever had to use it, though.
Hmm.
So, Mr Joseph came in here What time are we thinking? The paramedics reckon the body's been dead a good few hours, so sometime last night.
So, he closed and locked the door .
.
and then he put the gun to his heart, bullet went through, embedded in the wall there.
Any indication as to why he did it? The final piece of the pie, sir - Mr Joseph left us a message.
Oh! "To whoever finds me, I'm sorry, but I'm in trouble, "and I can't find a way out, apart from doing this.
Harley.
" Like I said, sir, easy-peasy, right? Yeahisn't it just? Inspector, we've got asituation.
Morning.
I'm DI Neville Parker.
This is Sergeant Naomi Thomas.
Miranda Priestley.
My sister, Corine, and this is Liam Calder.
Celeste Aubert.
I assume you've heard the news.
It's just awful.
The poor man! The farm manager said you were Mr Joseph's guests.
You arrived yesterday? We came to discuss a potential business deal.
Which was? Miranda was considering purchasing Mr Joseph's farm, but we were some way off agreeing a price.
So, is that your business, Ms Priestley - farming, agriculture? Miranda is involved in a number of different ventures.
So, what happened after you arrived back here? We had some food, erm, and Harley gave us a tour of the farm.
After that, we started negotiations.
And how was Mr Joseph? Anything in his behaviour to suggest he wasn't feeling himself? I guess, if I look back, he seemed a little distracted.
Tense, maybe.
I know he wasn't happy when we couldn't reach an agreement.
He had some debts, I believe.
He was hoping the sale of the farm would pay them off.
We think this happened late last night.
Did any of you hear a gunshot? I was fast asleep, Detective.
It was a very long day.
I must have slept through it, as well.
Same.
Ms Aubert? I didn't hear anything either.
Well, I guess, with the door closed, when Mr Joseph fired the gun, the sound can't have carried.
Like I said, it's just awful.
Mm.
If you need to speak with Miranda again, it's better if you go through me.
Works better if you call first, rather than just turn up.
Understood.
Excuse me, Detective! You left this on the terrace.
Right.
Erm, thank you very much.
Ms Priestley.
So, what are you thinking, sir? I mean, it's suspicious, right? Miranda Priestley comes over from Jamaica, and in less than 24 hours of her arrival, a man is found shot dead.
ECHOES: You left this on the terrace.
You know, I never leave my Dictaphone lying around.
She must have taken it.
ON DICTAPHONE: Sir, Miranda is lying.
I heard a gunshot at just gone midnight.
She wasn't asleep in bed like she said.
I saw her returning to the house a few minutes after the shot.
I think she did it.
I think she killed Harley Joseph.
So, this could be a murder, then? Which causes us a bit of a problem.
OK, I can believe that someone could have followed Harley in, shot him, and then staged it to look like a suicide - planted the gun next to him, typed the letter, and then locked and bolted the door from the inside, but But after doing all that, they'd be stuck inside here, as well.
Exactly.
And yet there was only one person in this office this morning when that door was broken down, and that was the victim.
HE EXHALES SHARPLY OK, come on.
Erm, can you two give the house the once-over, recover the victim's phone, laptop? You know the score.
Thanks.
Commissioner.
Sir.
Sir.
Let's go somewhere we can talk.
I've told the team on Jamaica I want temporary jurisdiction over the undercover operation.
And how did they take that, sir? Distinctly unimpressed, but DS Cassell is my priority.
If we need to pull her out of there at any point, I'm not wasting time deferring to someone else for the decision.
We've agreed to inform DS Cassell's immediate family of the situation, and a few select friends.
So, how do we play this? I'm meeting with her handler in the morning for a full debrief.
In the meantime, they're emailing the intel they've gathered so far.
Beyond that, I want us to focus on solving Harley Joseph's murder.
The sooner we do that, the sooner we get Miranda Priestley behind bars.
And Florence out of harm's way.
Exactly.
Right.
You know, Sarge, there are some weird choices in this dude's CD collection.
It's "victim", not "dude", Marlon.
Sorry.
Sorry.
No offence intended, Mr Joseph.
But, like, how does the same guy that's bought Jamaica Nites keep it right slap bang next to The Best Of British Choral Music? I mean, like, that's just a crime against reggae music right there.
What?! FLORENCE: Daloris, time for tea.
SHE MOUTHS Celeste, when you're done with Daloris, Miranda wants to speak with you.
Sure.
What would you like for tea? Erm, what's all that you've got there, sir? This is all the intel the Jamaican team have managed to gather on Miranda Priestley over the last two years.
Oh, looks like they've been busy.
Hmm, yeah.
Anything of interest so far? Some useful initial background.
It's mostly about Miranda and her sister.
They come from a pretty poor neighbourhood in Kingston, but they actually had a very religious upbringing.
Their mother, Renell, was a devout Catholic.
So, how did Miranda end up doing what she's doing? Crime was a way out of poverty for her.
She did some low-level dealing in her teens and worked her way up to larger-scale drug trafficking and money laundering.
Corine Priestley joined the outfit when she left school.
She was lured in by the big money Miranda was making.
They've also had some turbulent times along the way.
12 years ago, their mother was killed - shot by a rival trafficker.
It was felt that Miranda was over-reaching, stealing business from more established drug-trafficking operations.
So, a strong warning was sent.
That was just a warning? Well, according to the case file, both sisters were devastated, but Miranda, as seems to be her way, refused to be cowed by it.
She and Corine doubled down and fought to protect their business.
And what about the daughter, erm, Daloris? Adopted two years ago.
There are no indications as to why Miranda wanted to be a mother.
And Liam Calder - how does he fit into the set-up? Miranda's head of security is his official title.
He's ex-military.
He joined Miranda's team about three years ago.
Does most of her dirty work.
Does that make him a suspect, then? Well, we certainly can't rule it out, especially as he's used to handling firearms and he's registered as owning a Glock handgun himself.
But since Florence seems convinced that Miranda did this, she has to remain our prime suspect.
So, where do we go from here, sir? Well, I think we focus on the victim - Harley Joseph.
We've recovered his phone and laptop, so we can make a start going through his emails and phone calls.
Great.
Speak to his friends, family, employees, see what they have to say.
The Commissioner and I are going to carry on with the background.
But circumstances dictate.
I'll be in touch when things change.
Corine said you wanted me.
Why did you lie to the police? Sorry? You heard the question, Celeste.
Last night, you told me you heard a gunshot.
Today, a man is dead and the cops are here.
So, why didn't you tell them? Because I knew you didn't want me to.
And why would you care what I think? You've only known me a few weeks.
Because .
.
I'm not blind to what goes on.
I know the kind of work you do.
Not everything, but enough.
I love my job here, looking after Daloris, but that's not all I want from life.
I see the opportunity, working for you, to do more, to be more.
That's why I lied for you.
It's Daloris' bedtime.
Neville, are you in? Catherine! What a lovely surprise! Selwyn told me about Florence.
You must be very worried.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, we all are, I guess.
Yes, but you especially, no? Yeah, the last few weeks have been tough, I admit.
I mean, I know it's Florence who's actually going through it, but it's not knowing how she's getting on, whether or not she's safe.
I think you need something to take your mind off it, a distraction.
Well, I did try that.
I bought myself this lovely make-your-own ship in a bottle.
A what? Erm, a make-your-own, erm, ship in a bottle.
Always wanted to try one ever since I was a kid.
Don't think I'm in the right head space for this kind of challenge, though.
Not got any suggestions, have you? Well, if it was me, I'd find a handsome Frenchman and let him distract me.
I don't think handsome Frenchmen have quite the same allure for me, Catherine.
Never say never, Neville.
I'll leave you to your work, but if you need a friend, you know where I am.
Thanks, Catherine.
CREAKING I've put together a list of the victim's employees and business associates, so I reckon we should head over to the farm first.
Cool.
Morning, Jamal.
Thank you.
I'll open them later.
Those look like birthday cards.
Why would someone be sending you birthday? Wait a minute! Is it your birthday? It might be.
Well, then, why didn't you say anything? Cos we've got an important case on our hands, Marlon.
It's DS Cassell we should be thinking of, not me.
Well, can I at least wish you a happy birthday? Only if you're quick about it.
Happy birthday, Sergeant Thomas.
SHE CHUCKLES Now can we get to work? All right.
Morning, Commissioner! OK, Mr Charles.
Thank you.
You've been very helpful.
Yeah.
Goodbye.
Morning, sir.
Inspector.
That was the victim's solicitor.
Apparently, Harley Joseph had no intention of selling the farm.
He just needed an investor to bail him out of his debts.
Then why did Miranda Priestley make out they were negotiating a deal? How was your meeting with the handler? As far as they're concerned, it's still early days.
Operations like this take time.
DS Cassell needs to bed in, earn the suspects' trust.
Which is why they want to keep it live? The only information fed back so far is all to do with .
.
Liam Calder.
DS Cassell believes he's growing frustrated with Ms Priestley.
Do we know why? Well, there was an argument two weeks ago where he accused Miranda of being reckless, trigger-happy.
Said it wasn't what he'd signed up for.
Could it be referring to Otis Benjamin's murder? Possibly.
But what DS Cassell is convinced of is that Mr Calder's loyalty to Miranda is on the wane.
The team in Jamaica are encouraging her to exploit that.
Looks like you could use this.
Thanks.
The police are back.
Yesterday, I saw them searching Harley's office, taking his computer and his phone.
They think it's more than suicide, don't they? That it's suspicious? But I don't blame them.
I've got things I need to do.
I saw her - Miranda - the night it happened.
I saw her walking back to the house after the gunshot.
I told her I wouldn't tell the police, but I think she did it.
She killed him, didn't she? Celeste, I don't know what to say to you, but this family, it's Miranda lives in a very dark place, and you're better as far away from it as you can get.
Yes, but I just want to know the truth.
If I'm caught up in this, I'm protecting Miranda, but I want to know why.
What's going on? That's a conversation you should have with her.
You really think she'll tell me? Look, I can't tell you what's been going on because I don't know either.
The dead guy they found on the beach the police are questioning us about, and now Harley - I don't have a clue what this is all about.
And it's not like Miranda to cut herself off like this and get her hands dirty.
So, why is she doing this? Something's obviously got to her, but what that is, I have no idea.
We've been speaking with one of the guys who works here, and there's something he heard the day before yesterday that you should know.
He was in one of the barns checking delivery orders when Miranda and Corine Priestley came in.
And what exactly did he hear? It was Corine doing most of the talking, saying to Miranda she knew she wasn't interested in buying the farm, that there's more to it.
That's when our witness said he heard Corine ask Miranda if it was to do with their mother's murder.
Is that what all this is about, coming here? Is it cos of what happened to Mum? And what did Miranda say to that? She seemed shocked that Corine thought that, flat-out denied it.
She refused to talk about it any more, and they left the barn.
Naomi.
"Is that what this is about, coming here? "Is it because of what happened to Mum?" Those are your words, Corine.
After Mum was killed .
.
I started cutting out the newspaper clippings about it.
I put them in this folder I had.
I don't know why.
I was I wanted to feel like I wasn't giving up on her.
It's been sat in a drawer in my kitchen for the last 12 years, that folder.
No-one's been near it.
Then, the other day, I see Miranda's got it on her desk.
She's been going through it for the first time.
Did you ask her about it? Not straight away.
Then, all of a sudden, she announces we're coming here, says it's to do with buying this farm, but I know it's not.
I'm her sister.
I know when she's up to something.
So, that's why you confronted her? But she denied it? And it's not right.
It's not fair.
If she knows something about our mum, it's not her secret to keep.
I shouldn't be talking with you.
I shouldn't have said any of this.
DOOR OPENS I think, from now on, I'll be arranging some legal representation if you're going to question us any further.
Inside, please, Corine.
Happy birthday to you Marlon, no.
.
.
Happy birthday to you What did I say? .
.
Happy birthday, dear Sarge Marlon! .
.
Happy birthday to you.
We really don't have time for this.
HE SIGHS Sarge, all I'm asking for is two minutes.
Nothing more.
OK, two minutes, but no more.
Right, then, blow out your candle first.
Erm, just so you know, I obviously have not been to the shops, so everything is from here, and that was the last bun in the tin, so, erm, it's probably stale.
It's the thought that counts.
I used some of the Commissioner's newspapers to wrap the present up.
Hopefully, he doesn't notice! A stapler! How did you? How did you know? That's exactly what I wanted.
Well, I saw you eyeing mine.
And II put a few staples in there, just to get you started.
Thank you, Marlon.
This is all very kind of you.
Look, I know we have a really important case, but it's your first birthday in Saint Marie.
We can't let that pass.
IN DISTANCE: I understand that, sir.
I reckon we should get back to work.
What I'm still struggling to understand is how the events of the last two days might connect back to the murder of Miranda and Corine Priestley's mother.
There's nothing to suggest that Harley Joseph had any connection to the family prior to now.
Or has any criminal dealings, let alone a drug-land killing in Jamaica.
Also, sir, we went through the victim's diary and email correspondence.
And while Mr Joseph's farm did export to Jamaica, we've seen no evidence of anything suspicious.
So, possibly, Corine has got it wrong - there is no link to the mother's murder.
So, what's it all about, then? Why did Miranda come here? And why has Harley Joseph been murdered? Sir, postmortem and lab reports are in.
Bullet wound to the heart was just off-centre, caused a major haemorrhage.
Death would have been within a minute or so.
And the bullet recovered from the wall was definitely fired from the gun found in the victim's hand.
Only prints on the gun were his.
PHONE RINGS Saint Marie Police.
Officer Pryce speaking.
Erm, Commissioner, Inspector, it's DS Cassell.
Put it on speakerphone.
Florence, are you all right? I'm fine, but I don't have long.
Just tell us what you can.
OK.
So, there is a wooden shack on the north-eastern edge of the farm.
It's about half a kilometre into the woods.
Right.
I saw Miranda come here last night, alone, and she left with a box, but I don't know what was in it.
I'm at the shack right now.
I don't know who it belongs to.
Erm, a woman, I think, but I can't find any ID.
We need to get in contact and find out who lives in that shack.
Marlon and I can do that, sir.
The only thing of interest is some photos in an envelope marked "Jamaica".
They look like they were taken 20 or so years ago.
They are of Miranda and Corine when they were young.
I think they're with their mother.
Renell Priestley? Mm.
I saw some photos of her in Corine's house in Jamaica, so, yeah, I'm pretty sure it's her.
If I get the chance, I'll try and find the box Miranda had, see what it is she took from here.
Look, I've been gone a while.
I should probably get back to the house now.
No, wait, Florence! ErmI just wanted to make sure you're OK.
I'm fine.
It's tough.
Tougher than I thought.
But it's just .
.
I feel really alone.
Yeah, well, that's why we're all here thinking of you.
And we're going to try and solve this as quickly as we can, so that we can get you out of there.
So, please, just Please be careful.
I will.
Bye.
So, looks like it comes back around to the mother.
Then perhaps Corine was right.
If she knows something about our mum, it's not her secret to keep.
And maybe these past 12 years .
.
there is something Miranda's been keeping secret about Renell Priestley's murder.
LINE RINGS ON PHONE: St Mary's Hospice.
How can I help? I'd like to make an appointment to see one of your patients tomorrow.
This isn't working.
Daloris is asleep, so if there's nothing else you need from me, I'll just Take a seat.
We need to talk.
Sure.
I've been watching you, Celeste .
.
these past few days.
Something about you .
.
it's been bothering me.
What do you mean? Hmm.
The sweet, pretty little au pair who lies to the police.
You did that very easily, Celeste.
Didn't take much convincing, did you? There's something you're not telling me, and I want to know what it is.
I lost someone.
The person I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with .
.
he was shot.
Losing him the way I did .
.
it felt like someone had changed the rules halfway through the game.
I never want to feel like that, ever.
But the only way to do that .
.
to survive .
.
is if I start making the rules myself .
.
like you did.
You know, when bad things happen to us .
.
that's when we find out who we really are inside.
I'll get you a glass.
I know you're worried, but if anyone can deal with this, Florence can.
I don't doubt she can cope, Catherine, but there's something about all this no-one's talking about.
When it's all over, and Miranda Priestley's hopefully behind bars, in some ways, it's just the beginning.
What do you mean? It's a big network Miranda operates.
It'll take time to dismantle.
Not everyone involved will be caught.
You mean Florence might still be in danger? Maybe.
Which is why she'll probably have to move away, get a new life, a new identity.
This is what's been on your mind, why you've not been sleeping.
Oh, Neville.
And you really thought sticking a ship in a bottle would be the answer? I didn't know what else to do, Catherine.
But if you're right, Florence must know this, as well, no? What doing this will mean for her? I mean, I guess, very possibly, she does.
There were always going to be a lot of difficult memories here for her.
Maybe coming back to Saint Marie hasn't been the answer for Florence, like it has for you.
You think she wants to move on? Maybe.
Well, if that's what she wants .
.
I guess I want that for her, too.
And I need to help make that happen.
Morning.
Inspector.
Sir, Marlon and I spoke with the land registry first thing.
That shack near the farm? Turns out it's owned by Harley Joseph.
But we know he doesn't live there.
Someone else does.
So, we went back to his solicitor, and it turns out Mr Joseph has been renting the property to the same woman since 2010.
Who is she? A woman called Georgina Benjamin.
As in .
.
Otis Benjamin? Well, that can't be a coincidence.
Exactly.
So, I called the team in Jamaica and asked them to do a check on Ms Benjamin.
She's Otis Benjamin's aunt, and get this, sir - she was living in the same block of flats in Kingston as Miranda Priestley's mother.
They were next-door neighbours for, like, years.
Until Renell Priestley was murdered, which was when Georgina Benjamin moved here to the shack on Harley Joseph's farm.
Do we know where Georgina is now? St Mary Hospice up in Port Royal.
Marlon is heading up there now to see what he can find.
So, if Georgina Benjamin was an old neighbour of the Priestley family Why has Miranda turned up at her home all these years later? And why are these two men now dead? Erm, Miranda isn't having breakfast today? She left early.
Not sure when she'll be back.
OK.
Miranda? Keep it right slap bang next to The Best of British Choral Music.
MARLON CHUCKLES "Georgina".
All right, thanks, Marlon.
Get yourself back here.
And? Georgina Benjamin was moved into the hospice a couple of weeks ago.
She went into a coma the night before last.
Nothing suspicious about it.
She's been ill for a while now.
But they don't expect her to come out of it.
Also, apparently, she had a visitor earlier this morning - a woman.
Miranda Priestley.
She went into Georgina's room, and when she heard Ms Benjamin didn't have long left, she went back out, said that was all she needed to know.
What's that about? Why the interest in Georgina Benjamin? ON CD: This is Otis, Otis Benjamin.
I'm here on Saint Marie with my aunt Georgina, and I'm talking to her about something that happened a long time ago - the murder of her friend.
Ain't that right? ON CD: Renell Priestley was a good friend.
She didn't deserve what happened.
I've kept it secret all this time.
Although I'm scared, I'm speaking out now.
And what is the truth? I was there when it happened.
I saw it.
It wasn't some dealer.
It was her daughter Miranda.
Miranda Priestley killed her own mother.
I think it's about time you and I had a little chat.
Harley Joseph was found shot dead inside a room with one door in and out.
If Miranda Priestley killed him and placed the gun in his hand to make it appear like a suicide, then how the hell did she then get out of the room afterwards, considering that one door was locked and bolted from the inside? It's impossible.
Yeah, it is.
But then .
.
sometimes things that seem impossible .
.
are often very easily explained.
Inspector, why do you have a make-your-own ship in a bottle? I needed a displacement activity, sir.
Catherine suggested I fall in love with a Frenchman, but I don't think that was ever really going to do the trick.
Not that I have anything against Frenchmen, obviously.
Just there's just less of a language barrier with a .
.
make-your-own ship in a bottle.
And you get a rather lovely ornament at the end of it.
Plus, I think I'm starting to realise that this ship in a bottle holds the key to explaining exactly how Harley Joseph was murdered.
We have a bullet wound to the heart.
Reckon we're talking 9mm calibre.
And he's registered as owning a Glock handgun himself.
The farm manager saw Mr Joseph heading down here late last night.
MIRANDA: Harley gave us a tour of the farm.
I didn't hear anything either.
We have to get to the crime scene.
So, is that why you came here to Saint Marie - to find that CD? You were never interested in buying Harley's farm, were you? I knew the recording was here somewhere, and as long as Harley Joseph was alive, he was an inconvenience.
I needed some time to find it.
So, you got rid of him? And after all that, you did the hard work for me.
And Otis Benjamin? MIRANDA CHUCKLES Stupid man.
Tried to blackmail me.
Caused a whole mess doing it, too.
But the clean-up process is almost complete.
He got to you, though, didn't he? I mean, he knew what it was worth, that information.
Not just to the police, but your sister.
If she found out what you did to your own mother Keep walking, Celeste.
OK, if I'm right about this, there's going to be a bullet hole somewhere in this area, and it should be about the same height as the one inside the office.
Inspector, if you and I take this wall, Sergeant Thomas, Officer Pryce, you do that one.
Sir, why do you think there's a second bullet hole? Because, Naomi, this murder is exactly like that ship in a bottle.
It actually took place outside the office here, but then was re-constructed inside to make it look like a suicide.
Sorry, run that by me one more time.
OK, well, here's what I think happened.
What we know is Miranda went on a tour of the farm with Harley the afternoon she arrived.
We also know that Harley kept a gun inside this office for security reasons.
I think Miranda saw the gun on the tour, and that's when she first started to form her plan.
And all she needed to make it work was another gun the same calibre as Harley's 9mm revolver.
We know Liam Calder carried a Glock.
And I wouldn't be at all surprised if Miranda had her own gun, as well.
So, earlier that evening, I think Miranda came down here to set the scene to look like a suicide would take place.
First, she'd get Harley's gun and fire a single bullet into that wall there.
GUNSHO Now, as I thought, the noise of the gunshot would be muted with the door closed, so no-one in the house would have heard it.
She'd then place the gun very carefully somewhere within easy reach, but probably on the desktop, and then she'd proceed to type the suicide note.
Then all she had to do, with the scene set, was wait till later that evening.
Because the farm manager said Harley would come down to the office every evening to check the next day's orders.
Exactly.
She followed him down here with a different 9mm-calibre gun? Yes, sir.
Either Liam Calder's Glock or her own gun.
Then, while they were here outside the office MIRANDA: Harley.
.
.
Miranda Priestley shot Harley Joseph in the chest.
GUNSHO Which is the same gunshot that DS Cassell heard.
Because it was fired outside and not inside the office.
Yes, but we know from the postmortem that death wouldn't have been instantaneous.
So, after Miranda shot Harley, I think she then forced him inside the office.
By threatening to shoot him again.
While Harley tried to stem the bleed, Miranda must have aimed the gun at him a second time.
And his survival instincts, like any of us, would have made him scrabble into the office, shut the door and lock it behind him.
Likewise, he saw the gun and must have grabbed it for protection.
But, with only a few seconds left to live, there was nothing else he could have done.
HARLEY GROANS That is why there must be a second bullet hole somewhere in this area, because all Miranda then had to do would be to find the bullet, remove it, and then dispose of it.
Guys, we need to find that bullet hole.
Sir, got it.
Here, look.
That's it.
Marlon, can you test for gunshot residue, please? And I'd like to get a cast.
Got you, sir.
Let's head up to the house and make the arrest.
Yes, sir.
See you up there.
MIRANDA: Move.
All right, you can stop here.
So, this is it? You're going to shoot me and leave my body here? They'll work out it was you.
Not after Liam's tidied up for me.
What were you doing sniffing around? It wasn't an accident, you finding that recording.
I'm a police officer undercover.
DS Cassell.
SHE CHUCKLES Well, on your knees, DS Cassell.
I have I have one last question.
Your mother .
.
why did you kill her? I mean, she was a good woman, from what I read in your file.
She was disappointed in you.
That's what it was.
She was deeply disappointed in me.
Nothing I ever did was good enough for that woman, but I never sought her approval.
This wasn't emotional, what I did.
She was going to go to the police and turn me in.
Tough love, she called it.
SHE CHUCKLES But I'd worked too damn hard and built up too damn much to allow her to tear it all down.
That's why you took in Daloris - to try and ease your conscience? Even though you haven't got an ounce of love for her.
No more questions, DS Cassell.
Sir, Miranda is not here.
Neither is DS Cassell.
GUNSHO No, no, no, no, no! I think it's time you and I had a little chat.
No more questions, DS Cassell.
GUNSHO Miranda Priestley, I'm arresting you for the murders of Harley Joseph, Otis Benjamin and Renell Priestley.
Sir, look! DS Cassell.
NEVILLE: Oh, thank God you're all right! I've made the arrest, but she needs a paramedic.
I'll take it from here.
Take this.
Are you all right? Yes, II think I am.
It's just It's so good to see you both.
Bloody hell! You gave me a scare there.
I don't think I've ever seen the Commissioner leg it like that before, though! II knew you'd be all right, though.
If anyone could handle this, it's you.
You've done us proud, DS Cassell.
PHONE RINGS Commissioner Patterson.
You're going to be fine, I promise you.
Poor kid.
Yeah, but this is better than what she had.
She needs a normal family, one who will actually love her.
Yeah.
So, I guess you're going to have to go away now, aren't you? I think so.
But you always knew that, right? You've helped me so much the last year, facing up to what happened with Patrice here.
I knew I needed to come back to do that.
But if I'm going to start living again - properly living - it has to be somewhere else where there are no ghosts.
Somewhere new.
Well, thank you, Florence.
You've made this island a home for me, and I'll never forget that.
I'm just going to miss you so much.
I'm going to miss you, too.
I'll let her know it's time.
That was the undercover team.
You don't have long, I'm afraid.
I guess I should say my goodbyes.
Victim's name is Ayana Jelani.
She's a singer from the UK.
So, how did she end up taking aspirin if she knew she was allergic to it? They're trying to say that it's my fault.
If someone else did kill Ayana, they're doing a very good job of making it look like Darlene is to blame.
I see we have a visitor.
This is my sister Izzy.
If you cause me any trouble while you're out here I won't, Nev.
I promise.
Naomi, how would you feel about stepping up, giving me a hand on top of your uniform duties? I'd love that, sir.
I said police! Stop!
Stop!
