Face Off (2011) s11e04 Episode Script
Snow Queens
1 McKenzie: Previously on Face Off All-Stars The artists toyed with one of America's favorite franchises.
Monster High.
[all cheering.]
I don't think I've ever been so excited.
Ah! Oh, my God.
I know nothing about Monster High.
McKenzie: Cig and George pushed the envelope and impressed Face Off's first ever focus group This elevates Monster High to, like, new heights.
McKenzie: Earning immunity in this week's elimination challenge.
[applause.]
And tonight - Oh! - What the - It's snow! - I've never seen snow.
McKenzie: The artists get a chilling surprise.
You only have two days to do this challenge.
- What? - Whoa.
Uh-oh.
There's a crack down the back of it.
But this is a risk worth taking.
It's starting to look like we have two different ideas.
We have to have, basically, a miracle at Last Looks.
McKenzie: Find out what happens next.
This is Face Off All-Stars.
[all cheering.]
[exciting music.]
So we're heading to the lab, and as soon as we turn the corner.
.
[cheerful holiday melody.]
There's snow everywhere! - Ah! - What the - It's snow! - Snow! - I've never seen snow before.
- Oh, my God! - It's real snow! - Wow.
How crazy is that? We're in LA.
It doesn't snow here.
I've never seen snow in real life.
My feet are cold, my hands are cold, and I'm over the moon.
- Hey, guys.
all: - Hi.
Welcome to the lab! [all laughing.]
Well, as we all know, it never snows in LA.
So we created this winter wonderland to get you into the spirit of this week's challenge.
[all murmuring.]
The Chronicles Of Narnia film franchise-- Yes! Oh, I'm sorry.
And television's Once Upon A Time both feature beautiful but icy snow queens that you would not want to cross.
- What? - Cool.
Now, hopefully you're all familiar with the phrase, "No two snowflakes are alike"? all: - Yeah.
- Good.
Because in today's Spotlight Challenge, each of your teams will be creating a beautiful and powerful snow queen inspired by a unique snowflake.
- Oh, cool.
- Awesome.
Yes! So buried in the snow around you are seven oversized snowflakes.
- What? - Yes! On my cue, you're gonna go hunt through the snow, and find the flake that will inspire your snow queen.
Now, this one should be a lot of fun.
But, of course, here's the thing - Oh.
- Aw, there's a thing.
This is a simple challenge for you guys.
Come on, you're All-Stars.
So you only have two days to do this challenge.
- Oh - Aw Not only do we have to do this beautiful snow queen, but we also have to do it in only two days this time, which is crazy.
Who's ready to go find a snowflake? - All right.
- Yeah! All right, good luck, guys.
Ready set go! [screaming and laughing.]
- Totally got one.
- Yeah! - Yeah, ninja star.
- Let me see it.
Oh, my God.
I don't see anything.
- Oh, this is awful.
- Ooh, Emily, Emily.
What? Oh, my God, this is really cold.
[yelping.]
What do you get? Cool.
Oh, look, I found one.
You find one? Let me see.
Awesome.
- What about that one? - Yeah.
- Yeah! - She found one! [laughs.]
My hands.
[grunting.]
I think I hurt it.
- This one's pretty.
- [chuckles.]
So everybody has their snowflakes.
And now, before we can start on our designs-- snowball fight.
[woman screaming.]
Oh, right in the butt crack! If you hit me, so help me God, I will find you.
[woman screaming.]
This is my first time having a snowball fight.
[screams.]
It actually hurts more than you expect.
I thought it was gonna be a little bit more fluffy.
- All right, darling.
- All right.
- Here is our snowflake.
- Okay.
I think that it would be cool to make an evil queen.
I do too.
Absolutely.
So this is the snowflake that we got.
And we kind of want to go-- like, queens have been done so many times.
And we want to make something a little bit more unique, especially with coloring.
So our concept is the evergreen ice queen.
Yeah, we're gonna make her almost look like she's, like, the trees that have some of the snow on them.
And we're gonna incorporate a lot of the forms and shapes into a headpiece to tie in the snowflake.
Yeah.
I'm excited.
Would running a translucent silicone face be weird? But we would see her skin tone through it.
Right, but what if that was the intention? We start thinking about a woman who drowned and was trapped under the ice.
And since we have immunity with the last challenge, we decide to take a risk and do something that not only hasn't been done in this competition-- I don't know if it's ever been done, period.
We're gonna be painting directly on our model's face and then gluing silicone over it, which will represent ice.
I'm really excited.
This is our snowflake, and it's kind of cool, 'cause it gives us a lot of design freedom to interpret this.
We can take that form and repeat it in a pattern throughout the cowl and ice armor for our warrior queen.
And then we'll do the beauty makeup again.
Because we're good at it.
- We're pro.
- Well [laughs.]
We're gonna do a darker queen.
We're gonna do the black ice queen.
Our snowflake looks like an evergreen tree, so we want to make a crown that's growing out from the neck.
And we want to use emeralds and blacks.
Since we've done, you know, two-day challenges with season 9, we're familiar with the workflow.
Yeah, our goal is to concentrate on the paint job on the hands and the face and not to worry about the body too much.
Yep.
Maybe, like, if we did something where, like, her hair was woven in and out of ice spikes, and we can have the spikes coming out all over her hair.
Yeah, I like that.
We have an interesting snowflake.
There's a ton of shards jutting out every which way.
So we want to incorporate a lot of that into our character.
What would be kind of cool is if we had a silicone appliance that has, like, ice crystals jutting out of it.
So it's, like, that could be, like, her, like, casting, like, powers and stuff.
All right, guys.
Let's get to work.
I want to mix up some silicone glass.
Okay.
It's gonna be so cool, Niko.
What are you guys doing? Our ice queen is gonna look like an ice sculpture.
Cool.
Our snowflake reminds us of the Statue of Liberty, so we decided that our queen is entirely made of ice.
Instead of using a wig, I'm sculpting her hair and Niko's sculpting our brow piece.
Did you want to go silicone? We can just brush in silicone and fill the rest with poly foam.
Oh, my God, Cat, you just blew my mind right now.
- I just fell in love with you.
- Yeah, shut up.
- [panting.]
- Stop.
Let's sculpt those so I can practice on them really fast.
Then we can get our other ones done.
Our snowflake is very elaborate.
It's got spires all around it, and it's very regal, very elegant.
So we're going with a fairy or elemental queen.
She's going to have ice spires coming out of her forehead, ice crystals on the cheeks, and icicles on the backs of her hands.
- Gage? - Yes, ma'am.
- You have 30 minutes.
- Cool.
We're gonna try and manage our time by keeping our pieces minimal.
In order to have realistic icicles, we're going to sculpt them first, and then make them out of a VacuForm.
[machine whirring.]
Then we're going to sculpt the prosthetics around the VacuForms.
Yeah, I feel like yours came out really good.
I think those will work for mine.
Cool.
Right now, Keaghlan's blocking out the face, and then I'm making icicles out of Friendly Plastic, which is little plastic pellets that you can heat up in water, and you can form them, and then once they cool, they're a solid, hard plastic.
The icicles are going to fit in the sockets that we left in the facial piece.
And then I'm also going to incorporate them into the wig.
Logan, you feel okay? - So far, so good.
- Good.
Okay.
Adam is fabricating this fantastic set of armor.
And I'm taking extra special care of the sculpture of the cowl, which is a crown shape made of ice.
And I thought that a Mohawk hairdo would be really standout unique, so I'm leaving a negative space where the wig needs to go.
Adam and I are working out a really good process, where I will do my thing, he'll do his thing, we will convene at times.
It works.
It works really well in fact.
Let's make sure we stay on this path.
Yeah.
'Cause there's no time to mix it up.
Since we only have two days, we want to keep it really simple and really basic, and we don't want to fabricate a lot of stuff.
So Ben's sculpting the crown, and I'm sculpting the ice neck piece.
And then, hopefully, when we get it all done, it will come together to represent our snowflake.
It's starting to look like we have two different ideas about the design of these things.
Ben is worried the pieces aren't gonna match.
Well, I mean, what do you want to do? We look around, and people are doing all these incredible things-- huge cowls and fabricating-- and we've only got two pieces.
So they have to be perfect.
I mean, I can start over.
We need to make sure that everything's consistent, so I really need to come up with something quick.
Now I'm gonna question it.
Well, I'm questioning mine too.
It's starting to look like we have two different ideas about the design of these things.
These two pieces are supposed to blend seamlessly together.
It's supposed to be the same ice going from the neck up.
And right now, mine looks like leaves, but his looks more like crystals.
And the judges will notice it.
- I mean, I can start over.
- No, don't start over.
We just need to find a middle ground.
We don't really have time to go back and forth on this design, so since his has more ice-like qualities, I decided to match mine to his.
All right, I'm gonna go with that.
- Are you sure? - Yeah.
So excited about this character.
We have all of the sculpts started.
Tyler's working on the snowflake ice crown, while I sculpt the wooden chest.
I'm still, like, drawing with clay.
So until I get a desired shape, I'll let you know.
The chest sculpt is very tree-like, but it still has the curves of a female form.
Almost like a corset.
And then I use a heat gun and carve out the bark texture with a clay tool.
It's a super quick technique, so it's perfect within the time frame that we have.
Oh, that's so cool.
I love landscapes; I do that for a living outside of makeup, so I feel like I'm bringing one of my landscape paintings to life.
I can't wait to frost that.
Love it! Hello, everybody.
Hey.
- Hi.
- Hi.
We got a rather simple snowflake.
We'll be doing ice cracking through our modeling and veining.
If you have cracking, you almost have to use a stencil pattern.
You just have to be careful that it doesn't look like the 1,000-piece puzzle.
- Got ya.
- Okay.
Our idea is that she is the black ice queen.
We don't want to really obscure the face at all.
We liked the idea of doing just a beauty-- Yeah, you're not putting appliances on the face.
- No.
- What color, though? We were thinking of, like, a purple, just as sort of an accent color.
Uh, when you say purple, are you thinking more of a lavender? Right.
Yeah, 'cause you've got to keep it light if you want to show the beauty of the individual.
We want to try doing a completely translucent silicone face and under-painting-- Like a frostbite makeup below this.
I've never done anything like that before.
- Is that-- - I haven't either.
Okay.
Uh, that would be very interesting.
And color-wise, you're thinking Like, frostbite sort of colors.
Frostbite, snow.
Purples and blues and maybe even like a little black on the tip of her nose.
- I wouldn't do that.
- No? Yeah, the first thing you're gonna look at is the smudge on the end of her nose.
- That's true.
- Yeah.
All right.
Our pieces, we want to make them in silicone.
And this is gonna be padded with foam but-- uh, skin and silicone.
If you do silicone like this over this whole thing, - even with the foam padding - Too heavy.
You're going to have-- with all this back here, you're gonna have a little weight to it.
You think we should go with foam latex, so that we can-- You know, something this big, I would.
Okay.
So she's gonna have icicles around the frame of her face to make a crown.
I think it should all be in, basically, the same material.
- You have a nice clear one there.
- Okay.
But this, itself, looks like - You're not digging that.
- horns coming out of the head.
- Okay.
- What about contact lenses? - The silver.
- Like, a silver.
- Good idea.
- Yeah.
You could take silver, even dry-brushing it and just, yeah, touch up little spots on it.
- That would do it.
- That would be really cool.
You know, like we do on the boards.
We were thinking of doing some sort of teeth, but maybe you can suggest an alternative.
Well, the only problem with the teeth-- it's going to do-- - Immediately-- - You're gonna do that.
Your headdress that you have, it's magnificent.
Let that be the feature.
Right, thank you so much for that.
- So this is our snowflake.
- That's beautiful.
We're gonna go the snowy route instead of the icicle route with her.
So instead of going blue and white with it, we're gonna go-- Whites and grays.
Yeah, and then use dark brown, like, raw umber.
Burnt sienna and raw sienna to get those undertones.
And you have so much great texture going on here, you can do a wash on it to-- A wash-- I think you were saying that before.
Yeah, and don't waste any time with a brush.
- Okay.
- Good-bye, everybody.
And good luck.
- Thank you.
- Bye.
- Thank you.
- See ya.
Molding time! I decide that a neat aspect of the hair could be to continue the line from the VacuForm spires and make a really cool profile.
So I need to make five of these pieces.
So I take aquarium tubing and wrap hair and different icicles around it.
And then I put LEDs to really give it a cool lighted effect.
- Gage - That's cute.
That would be behind the biggest icicle, right? - Yeah.
- Cute.
As the day's going on, the ice armor fabrication's coming along nicely.
After cutting the foam, I paint it light blue, using spray paint.
I take white acrylic latex and cornstarch, mix it together, then we'll brush that on the appropriate areas, and it would make it seem less like foam.
I am Apocalypse! - Oh, my God.
- [laughing.]
- This is good.
- All right.
Niko and I are finished molding the hair and the brow piece, but right now, we don't have anything to tie in the shapes from the snowflake, which is the most important part.
So we're fabricating an ice torch to replicate the hexagon shape, and we're incorporating geometric spikes into our crown and our collar piece.
We both don't have a huge background in fabrication, so it takes a little bit longer for us, but hopefully, we can get everything done we need to get done.
Hmm They're flimsy.
So "Pretty in Pink" was, like, my jam, as opposed to "The Breakfast Club," which I also love.
I totally know what you're talking about.
I don't know if that's sarcasm.
That's sarcasm.
Have you seen "The Breakfast Club"? - Nope.
- Oh, my God! Everyone finds it hysterical to point out all the movies I have not watched.
Have you seen "Sixteen Candles"? - Nope.
- Have you seen "The Shining"? Oh, my God.
How are you a human? - "Frankenstein.
" - Nope.
- "Bride of Frankenstein"? - Nope.
- "Wolfman"? - Nope.
- "Mad Max"? - Nope.
Never seen "Star Wars.
" - Oh, my God.
- What? [giggles.]
My favorite movie is "The Lucky One.
" And that is a-- it's based on a Nicholas Sparks book.
It has Zac Efron in it.
I have not seen that.
"Lost Boys"? You've seen "Lost Boys," right? No.
Shut up.
- Oh! - Oh, man! [laughter.]
Oh, you just have to take off the ribs.
Yeah, just the ribs and then this bolt, and it's out.
Our queen needs a scepter.
She's like a evil badass queen, so she can't just have, like, a regular scepter.
So I take apart the skeleton in the shop and VacuForm over that.
I think that's gonna be pretty cool.
Right? Power of ice demons! Cig gets all the VacuForms cut out and glued together and detailed with a little bit of hot glue.
And this is the most fun thing that we've made here.
- Oh, yeah.
- [gulping.]
[laughs.]
Oh, I really want to drink booze out of it.
Because our snow queen is still part of a tree, we want to wrap the hair into the branches to symbolize that she has tree in her.
So I thin out the lace wig, and then I build a back headband that will have all the branches on it.
And I'll be able to part the wig and apply it on the model on application day.
All right.
On to the wig.
Steady.
It's coming.
- Uh-oh.
- Are you good? We open the cowl mold, and we notice that there's a crack on the back of it.
We should run 'em in foam.
If you ran it in silicone, what would happen? The silicone would spill out the hole.
The issue is, if we pour silicone in it, there's a chance it could leak out the back.
But if we go foam latex, we may not get the edges that we want.
But I think this is definitely a risk worth taking.
So we ultimately decide to go to--with silicone because we really want the translucency.
Ten minutes, dude.
That's time, everybody! At the end of the day, we're not as far along as we would like to be.
One ten-hour day doesn't give you a lot of time to think and hash out your character.
And I'm starting to second-guess our concept now.
- Whoo-hoo! - Yeah! - Ah, it's pretty, girlfriend.
- It's so pretty! - Yes, yes, yes.
- Yes, awesome! Ow.
These are some good edges, man.
It's application day, and we get into the lab, and all of our foam pieces come out great.
The edges are awesome, and so I'm really excited to get started.
Focus on the wig.
I got that.
While I'm working on application, Melissa is going to be finishing off our wig.
It does take Melissa away from me, but it's minimal enough makeup that I feel confident I can get everything done.
Hi, Stephanie! Hi, how are you? I'm Gage.
I'm Emily.
Nice to meet you.
Can I have her just put the cowl on really fast? It would really help me out with the collar.
Yeah.
After all this time we spent on the collar piece, we're still trying to decide if we want to keep it.
Just, it's, like-- it's hitting the cowl.
It just needs to be engineered completely different.
It's not gonna look the best.
Yeah, it needs to be bent, and it's already, like, starting to crack and stuff.
Okay, then take it off.
So we decide to completely scrap the collar piece so we'd really focus and do a flawless application.
While you're applying that, I'm gonna clean up the flushing.
So Tyler's applying the face, and I'm prepping the chest.
Michael Westmore said to incorporate washes in the bark texture; that way we can really enhance the texture that we sculpted.
So I'm working with three different brown tones, and then once we apply it to the model, we're gonna do a full-body paint job.
We have a lot of surface to cover, but she's coming together, and she's looking really pretty.
Maybe have her sit up, 'cause I think they might be a little-- right now.
We get the face piece applied, and the edges are looking a little uneven.
- I think we should build here - Okay.
- to try and even that out.
- Yeah.
So we are gonna fill in that gap with Kryolan Artex.
Artex is a silicone you can sculpt with, so it's gonna help us with the translucency we still want to have.
So we get the bald cap down, and now it's time to go paint.
Oh, yeah, you can see right through it.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
It's unusual, but this time, we have to paint our model before we apply the prosthetic because it's clear; we have to be mindful of what it's gonna look like when you have the prosthetics on, so we have to keep holding the piece up to her face to make sure that the paint reads right through the silicone.
I would say definitely darker on that nose ridge.
Mm-hmm.
Usually, I would blend off my lines and edges and things, but stark brush lines actually read better because the silicone diffuses it for you.
It's actually looking really cool.
So the crown is on.
Now it's time to put the silicone pieces on.
But those edges are really just starting to take a whole lot more time than we really had wanted them to take.
It looks so cool with the black under it.
Oh, my God, I wish we would have done more black.
It looks good, but I'm getting a little concerned that we're not in as good a place as we thought we might have been.
We're gonna make things easy on us and just do two pieces.
Will you hold that on my arm? - What do you think of this? - As a stencil? That's cool.
It's an interesting challenge to make a gradation from a dark blue to a light blue and including ice.
So I find a stencil that I think reads well as angular ice pattern and start applying aqua color with a brush through the stencil.
The key here is going to be subtlety.
It's so easy to go heavy with the color, and then it becomes obviously a stencil pattern, but in this case, it looks authentic, and it looks like ice.
30 minutes, everyone! All right, guys, it's time! Our time's up, and we literally have zero beauty makeup on her, and we still have 80% of the paint job to do.
Yeah, theirs is badass.
Everybody else's makeup is pretty much done, so we're really worried, and we have to have basically a miracle at Last Looks.
This is gonna take so much time.
If we don't do this, this is gonna fall forward.
We have an hour left, and we're applying a prosthetic in Last Looks, and that is taboo.
You don't do that.
It's gonna be a quick, nasty glue-down, but it's gonna help us out.
Okay.
So we get it on there super quick, but we still have 80% of the paint job to do.
And I'll start doing her beauty makeup, and I'll get this.
I'll get the wig on you.
I think she's channeling David Bowie.
We get the wig on, and she's taken on a little bit of an androgynous look that I'm not sure how that's gonna read on stage, but we're just gonna have to go with it.
We will make this work.
At this point, she looks pretty.
To make her look scary, we transform her a little bit with a dark lip makeup.
We're really on the fence about it, but we'll take the chance.
That is pretty scary.
And keep getting the hair wet.
Now that everything's applied and the paint job looks great, to really sell the effect, we want to put a gloss over the whole thing.
That looks like frosty water.
The gloss brings out the paint job and it looks wet and it looks frozen.
I love it.
Dude, you look like a badass ice queen.
15 minutes! That's time, everybody! - Whoo! - My voice cracked.
- [laughs.]
- [clapping.]
I love it.
Time is up.
I see other people's makeup, and, um, there's a lot of them that went a similar route.
And we're the ones that are completely different.
It could have been a risk, but it could be something that they're gonna like a lot too.
- Everyone's is so beautiful! - Nice.
Good evening, everyone.
Welcome to the Face Off reveal stage.
Tonight, two of you will be eliminated.
But first, let's say hello to our amazing judges.
Owner of Alchemy Studio, Glenn Hetrick.
Good evening, guys.
- Good evening.
- Hello.
Oscar and Emmy award-winning makeup artist Ve Neill.
Hi, everybody.
- Hey, Ve.
- Hi, Ve.
And creature and concept designer Neville Page.
- Hello, everyone.
- Hi, Neville.
Okay, guys, well, let's get to it.
For your Spotlight Challenge this week, we asked you to create a beautiful and powerful snow queen inspired by a unique snowflake.
So let's take a look at your creations.
[dramatic music.]
We're both really happy.
I think she's beautiful; she looks exactly like the ice sculpture that we had envisioned.
Our snow queen looks beautiful on stage.
She has all the childlike aspects that Rachael and I wanted.
If we're not a top look, then I have a feeling that we'll be safe.
She looks like the frostbitten snow queen that George and I wanted.
It feels good when a plan comes together.
Evan and I are impressed with the work that we did in that last hour.
It's cool to finally feel really excited about the makeup.
Our snow queen looks fierce.
She looks like she is in control of winter.
She looks powerful, but she also looks sleek and she looks beautiful, so I think we combined some cool elements.
I think it's a good makeup, but in the All-Stars, it-- it just is not living up to the hype.
Okay, judges, go ahead and take a closer look at these beautiful snow queens.
Why does she resemble the Statue of Liberty? 'Cause she looks exactly like the Statue of Liberty.
Will you turn around for us? Oh.
It's a huge waste of time to sculpt hair on something that's supposed to look like ice.
It doesn't make any sense, because they didn't even sculpt it to look like ice.
I got to say, I do like the concept of this.
Not so much the execution.
These hair pieces They look like they might be functionally helping to support these shells.
I really like the look of that.
I really wish they would have taken more time to do a much prettier beauty makeup on her eyes.
Interesting.
I like the use of silicone.
I like the syncopated lines and the way they break up, but a really wide jaw leaves it looking masculine.
This is all really well done.
I just don't think this makeup should have been used for this challenge.
This reads like a beard from far away.
I think it's a really big misstep.
It's not a white snow makeup.
I'm just worried that it's too outside the box.
It has gotten so dark.
Hopefully, the judges understand what we were going for, but somebody is going home this challenge, and since we've been on the bottom before, we're really worried.
It needed to go more towards the light blue-greens or something.
It's gotten so dark.
I'm worried our concept's too outside the box.
And I'm hoping the judges understand that Ben and I really wanted to go outside our comfort zone.
I read this like black ice.
Like road ice.
Maybe that's what they were thinking too.
I like this a lot.
- She's very pretty.
- Oh, she's stunning.
Please turn.
They seized upon the concept of a frozen tree and used that to drive what they were doing instead of just ice, and that's brilliant.
They did a great job of using subtle differences in tone to break her face up.
You're absolutely right; it's really pretty.
You know, although the costume work is a little heavy, it feels very fitting in terms of the character design.
Conceptually nice but just a bit fussy.
If they would have raised this whole crown piece up 2 inches, it would have been really beautiful.
Instead of using her natural, beautiful shapes, it's working against it.
Okay, the judges have scored your creations, so let's find out what they thought.
Logan and Adam.
Cat and Niko.
Emily and Tyler.
Keaghlan and Melissa.
You are the best and the worst this week, and the judges would like to speak with you before making their decisions.
The rest of you can head back to the makeup room.
Adam and Logan, please step up.
Tell us about your concept.
This is Kiva, an Amazon that was outcast to the mountains.
And there, she became leader of those people.
She's a warrior queen.
It is the single best use of stencils that I've seen on the show.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
The elongation of the forehead really helped enhance her beauty and facilitate a transition point into the ice.
Absolutely gorgeous.
- Thank you.
- Thank you very much.
She had an incredible profile.
When she walked out, she was strong, beautiful.
It's a subtle beauty makeup, and I like the fact that you chose a dark lip for her, because it brings out those gigantic eyes of hers.
Thank you.
She's so cold, you can almost see her quiver.
[laughter.]
Waited my whole life to say that.
Truly, though, the character is beautifully in contrast with the costume.
Thank you.
Adam and Logan, please step back.
Thank you so much.
Cat and Niko, please step forward.
- Hi, Cat and Niko.
both: - Hi.
Please tell me about your snow queen.
She is a queen that led her people through a battle, and after they won, she decided to turn herself into an ice statue.
The Statue of Liberty feel of the snowflake helped inspire the statuesque part of our makeup.
I just don't think this is very successful this week, you guys.
She has really simple highlight and shadow makeup with the white eyelashes.
And she really does look like the Statue of Liberty.
I don't think that was a great idea.
Mm-hmm.
She feels a little uninspired.
If you're going to go with a simile or a metaphor of something that is so classic and so familiar, you need to execute it in a way that's more obvious, as opposed to derivative.
- Okay.
- Mm-hmm.
She lacks the geometric beauty of a snowflake.
And that's the core of this challenge.
And because you chose to sculpt the hair rather than the crown, you ended up with an anime look to the sculpture.
So it doesn't feel like a snow queen.
Cat and Niko, will you please head back? - Thank you.
- Thank you.
Emily and Tyler, please step to the center.
- Hello, Tyler, Emily.
- Hello.
So tell us about your concept.
Well, this is Evergreen, the icy snow queen, and her reign upon the forest is nearing an end because spring is coming, and she's literally melting away.
And our snowflake had points, so we wanted to incorporate that into the crown.
She's absolutely beautiful.
- Oh, thank you.
- Thank you.
Hearing your story, the fact that it's melting away, revealing it, you've conveyed that narrative in your makeup.
I'm assuming, Emily, that you're responsible for the hair work? That silhouette of the hair form is so well-balanced.
- Thank you.
- Beautiful work, guys.
Thank you.
Finding a way to introduce other colors and textures by seizing upon an idea-- Snow on what? Ice on what? That's super complex, professional-level thinking.
And also, the amount of work that you did with the time that you had, those two decisions set you up for success.
both: Thank you.
You guys, I am serious, she could step right onto a movie set.
She is exquisite.
Her face is so beautiful.
Just the colors that you chose, those soft beiges and the taupes-- I'm blown away.
both: Thank you.
Emily and Tyler, you can step back.
Thanks, Crystal.
- Nice job.
- Thanks.
Keaghlan and Melissa.
Could you give us the background of this character? This is Queen Jacqueline of the Winter Frost.
She is daughter of Mother Nature, and she and her four sisters rule over the four realms of the seasons.
The problem with this makeup is proportion.
The model has a beautiful face with really feminine curves to her jawline, and by creating a makeup so short and squat, you ended up with a masculine-looking makeup on an otherwise beautifully feminine face.
It's a little drag-y looking, especially from a distance, because all you see are these big, chunky brown streaks.
And this portion down here on her brow line, almost looks like it just slipped down on her head.
If it had been up higher to bring all these beautiful spires up, it could have been stunning.
You've got this crown piece, and then hair is growing behind it, and then there are crystals growing out of her head and her shoulders.
But the way you approached it physiologically, the audience may not know what it is.
- Okay, thank you.
- Thank you.
Keaghlan and Melissa, please step back.
Thank you.
Okay, if you'll please head back to the makeup room while the judges deliberate.
Thank you.
All right, judges, let's start with your favorites tonight.
Why don't we begin with Adam and Logan? I think they did a spectacular job, and she looked really gorgeous and very strong.
This was the perfect use of stenciling.
The level of detail that they achieved, absolutely gorgeous.
And then bringing the top of the forehead up and into that cowl retained its beauty and still felt like it was inspired by their snowflake.
Quite elegant.
All right, let's move on to Emily and Tyler.
I can't tell you how much I loved this makeup.
Every color that they chose to put in that makeup and on her head was the perfect choice.
The actual shading around her eyes and her cheek, so subtle, so beautifully done.
They showed the precise amount of restraint, yet at the same time, did something so creative, having the environmental aspect affect the body forms.
That's very sophisticated thinking.
All right, let's move on to the makeups that weren't so successful this week.
Let's start with Cat and Niko.
It's a nice piece.
Everything about it is just nice.
It's kind of vanilla.
It looked like the Statue of Liberty.
Whatever they were thinking, I don't know, but, boy, was it a mistake.
Their artistic skills are not present in the crown.
It's a flat piece of styrene.
It's like a hand turkey hat or something that you make at Thanksgiving.
They've done so much better work.
It just goes to show that, in an All-Stars season, you just don't know what's going to happen.
All right, judges, let's move on to Keaghlan and Melissa.
I don't think it was awful; I just think that the ratio of the makeup was just askew.
They put this crown on her that was, like, laying on top of her eyebrows, practically.
If they would have just elongated that whole makeup, it would have made all the difference.
In addition to it shortening her brow was the fact that it felt distressed, which, conceptually, could have made her an elemental, but it didn't come across the way.
It felt like she was broken.
All right, judges, have you made up your minds? - Yeah, we have.
- Yep.
Okay, let's bring them back out.
All right, Glenn, tell us about the top teams.
Logan and Adam.
You did a great job utilizing your model's features and the stenciling on the face was spectacular.
Emily and Tyler.
You two did an excellent job embracing your model's beauty, and that evergreen theme-- just brilliant.
Okay, who is tonight's winning team? Tonight's winning team is Okay, who is tonight's winning team? Tonight's winning team is Emily and Tyler.
[upbeat music.]
[clapping.]
Your makeup was absolutely exquisite.
You made great choices in terms of the concept and your execution was fantastic.
- Well done.
both: - Thank you.
- We won! - We win! - [laughs.]
- Yeah, it's awesome.
We were on top for the last two challenges, we finally got a win, and it feels awesome.
Emily and Tyler, congratulations.
You, Adam, and Logan are all safe and can head back to the makeup room.
All right, guys.
That means the rest of you are in the bottom, and two of you will be going home.
[dramatic music.]
Please step forward.
All right, Glenn, tell us about the bottom teams.
Cat and Niko.
We know how talented you both are, but choosing the Statue of Liberty aesthetic set you on the wrong path from the start.
Keaghlan and Melissa.
Though we liked some parts of your makeup, the proportions of its various parts put together gave it a masculine look.
So which team is going home tonight? The team going home tonight is Cat and Niko.
This was a really difficult decision for us tonight.
But there's such tough competition this season that one misstep is enough to send you home.
Cat and Niko, I'm sorry, but you have been eliminated.
That means, Keaghlan and Melissa, you're safe this week and can head back to the makeup room.
You guys have no idea how hard it is for us to send you home tonight.
Um, you're both so sweet and such good artists, or you wouldn't be here.
- Good-bye, you guys.
- Thank you so much.
That really means a lot and-- It's just an honor to be here.
Cat and Niko, it's been so great having you here with us.
If you'll please head back to the makeup room and pack up your kits.
Thank you.
Good luck.
We wanted to take a risk and try something different.
And sometimes risks pay off, and sometimes they don't.
- We're going home.
- What? Get in here.
It's really sad to leave, but to be brought back, especially with Niko again, it's just-- it's been so much fun.
We're gonna miss you guys, so please, kick ass, but stay as a family and stay true to each other, and we love you guys.
We love you guys too.
I'm very proud of her.
I'm very proud of us.
I'm very proud of myself too.
We've grown so much since the first time we've been on the show.
We're going out strong.
We're gonna keep focusing on our company.
This is not gonna stop us.
