Today, I am invincible
Eh, eh!
And I'm coming in for the fight
You can't break me, no
I won't shatter, I am mystical
Mind over matter
Today I am
Coming into the light
Ooh, ooh
Am I invincible?
WAVES CRASH
Ayana? Group therapy's starting.
I know we say one day at a time, but I need goals.
Something to aim for like I used to have.
Before I got messed up.
Ariel, do you recognise what Evann's talking about? I know I feel lost when I don't use.
So, what's the answer, do we think? How do we reconcile our known past, with our unknown future? By accepting what we did and forgiving it.
And then? Try not to balls it all up again? ARIEL CHUCKLES Anything more you'd like to add to that, Ayana? If you keep making the same mistake .
.
the only way it will change, is if you want it to.
SHE SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY Darlene, I'm heading off.
You've got my number if you need me.
Night, Dr Fuller.
KNOCK AT DOOR Good evening, sweetheart.
Hey.
There you go.
So, I finally got my niece to play that song of yours.
And, girl, you've got soul.
You know, the sooner we hurry up and get you singing again, the better.
Yeah, I reckon so.
Thanks, Darlene.
Have a good evening.
Ayana? You running with me? Ayana? You up yet? THEY CHATTER INDISTINCTLY Commissioner Patterson.
I am so grateful to you for coming.
Ms Curtis? Darlene, please.
It was Dwayne who told me to ask for you.
Was it now? DI Parker.
Sorry, you're friends with Dwayne.
Well, we used to be a bit more than friends, but we stay in touch.
And that's why I called him today, as soon as they started pointing the finger at me.
How do you mean? They're trying to say that it's my fault that that poor girl is dead.
And I swear to you it's not.
Why don't you and I go inside, while DI Parker checks in with his team? Sir.
Victim's name is Ayana Jelani.
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS She's a pop singer from the UK.
Two of the staff members here unlocked the room this morning, when she wouldn't respond.
So, what do we think happened? Paramedics reckon the swollen lips and rash on her neck suggest anaphylaxis.
And the only thing she was allergic to was aspirin.
Both staff and patients were aware and made sure not to give her any.
But if she knew she had a serious allergy, why wasn't she carrying an epinephrine injector? A what? You know, an EpiPen - a massive injection of adrenaline.
Anyone with a serious allergy carries one, they're life-saving.
I assume that's what this mess is all about.
She was trying to find it in her bag.
SHE PANTS, GASPS FOR AIR And there it is, right at the bottom of the bag.
0.
3 mg EpiPen.
So, why didn't Ayana find it? Marlon, if you would.
So how did she end up taking aspirin if she knew it was the one thing she was allergic to? The only medication she was given last night before bed was a Temazepam to help her sleep.
And we looked around, there's no aspirin packet in here.
Any other consumables? Uh, none that we could find.
Huh.
Well, that's a bit odd.
What is, sir? This toothbrush is upside down.
Yeah? Well, no-one puts their toothbrush back like that, do they? When you finish brushing, you put it back the other way around, brush-side up.
Right? Uh, yeah, I suppose so.
Then why is it the wrong way around? Maybe she wasn't thinking about it much? Hmm.
Take a photo, would you? Of the upside-down toothbrush? Of the upside-down toothbrush, yes.
CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS This is Dr Mark Fuller.
Clinical Director here at Ocean View.
Doctor.
This is Ayana's mother, Sandra White.
She's been staying nearby.
I'm sorry for your loss, Ms White.
Uh, do you mind me asking why it was Ayana came here? Her record company advised it after she'd missed a couple of gigs.
She'd been partying too much, drinking, taking stuff.
A year ago, she had a brief relationship with a man and when they split up, he released some photos of her, internet photos.
Everybody started piling onto her.
Social media, the tabloids.
People can be so cruel.
Ayana used alcohol and drugs to cope.
Well, can you talk me through what happened last night? I left for home at ten.
And Darlene was just about to begin the evening round of medication.
And that's when Ayana was given Temazepam? Was supposed to be given it.
Supposed to, until someone gave her an aspirin instead.
I told you, I did not do that.
I know I'm new at this job, but I would not make a mistake like that.
I read every label carefully.
And were other patients receiving medications? Yes.
Were either of them being prescribed aspirin? Could that have maybe led to a mix-up? No.
We weren't prescribing anyone aspirin.
The only two other doses administered that night were Benzodiazepine for withdrawal for Evann Parry.
And Mesalamine for Ariel Fanshaw, which is a slow-release anti-inflammatory.
Right, Doctor? Mm.
When was the last time your daughter had an allergic reaction? When she was ten.
First time she'd taken it.
We were careful after that.
Avoided it ever since.
Until now.
Can I help you, miss? Can we talkplease? You finish loading up, Marlon.
Sir? Hm? How well do you know Darlene Curtis? Hmm, our paths have only crossed a handful of times.
But she's never been in trouble as far as I know.
I have to say, my instinct is to believe her.
OK, sir.
So, if we're assuming, for the moment, that it wasn't Darlene that gave Ayana aspirin, it means someone else did, and it didn't look to me like it was an accident.
ENGINE REVS Naomi? This is Ariel.
She's a patient here and .
.
well, why don't you tell them what you told me? Someone's been watching us here.
I mean, watching Ayana.
In the woods, right? You saw this person? But Ayana had.
She was scared.
Any idea who it might have been? DOOR CREAKS OPEN No, she didn't say.
OK, well, thank you for telling us, Ariel.
Curious.
So, at 7.
35, Ayana returns to her bedroom after her evening meal.
Then later that evening, she takes a Temazepam administered by Darlene Curtis at 10.
05.
And no-one else is seen coming to or from Ayana's room until .
.
8.
32 the next morning, when Ariel Fanshaw knocked on her door.
Anaphylaxis happens quickly.
Like, minutes.
Which means it was either the pill that Darlene gave her that caused it, or she ingested aspirin at some point during the night.
Which she wouldn't choose to do because she's allergic to it.
So, what happened? How did aspirin get into Ayana's system? But, sir, if someone wanted to kill Ayana by giving her some aspirin, how would they know that she wouldn't be able to find her injector-thingy? You're right, it's another thing that doesn't make sense.
Look, until we get the postmortem and toxicology report back, we're just groping around in the dark anyway.
Let's call it a night and regroup tomorrow.
Oh, Naomi.
Obviously, we're spread very thin.
Uh, how would you feel about stepping up? You know, giving me a hand on top of your uniform duties.
I'd love that, sir.
Great.
Just until the Commissioner finds a new DS.
Yes, of course.
Just happy to help.
Right, um, see you in the morning, sir.
Yeah, night, Inspector.
Night.
Evening, Catherine.
Just thought I'd pop by for a quick sundowner.
I'm glad you came by.
I've got some messages to pass on to you.
Messages? From your sister.
What, Izzy? Why's she phoning you? Oh, she said she's lost your number and remembered you mentioning my bar when you were back home at Christmas.
What did she want? Here.
I wrote it all down.
"Call Izzy ASAP.
"Don't call, going out.
"Came home early.
Can talk now.
"You'd better not be ignoring me, Bumhead.
" There's a little smiley face next to this.
She asked me to draw that.
HE SIGHS I'm sorry you've had to deal with this, Catherine.
It's fine.
I like her.
She's funny.
That's one way of describing her, yeah.
So, come on.
Call her back, before you forget.
Absolutely not.
We don't speak for months and then suddenly she calls me out of the blue.
I know Izzy.
This has got trouble written all over it.
I'll deal with this later.
DISTANT COCKEREL CROWS Right, what have we got? We currently have a young woman who died of a fatal allergic reaction to aspirin.
But we have no idea when, why or how she ended up consuming said aspirin.
So, until proven otherwise, we're treating the death as suspicious.
Something's not right.
We're missing a photo.
Really? I thought I had it covered.
Don't mind me, you just carry on.
OK.
Our victim's name is Ayana Jelani.
22 years of age, born and raised in Hammersmith, London.
Father died when she was 11.
Raised by her mother after that.
Man, she signed a million-dollar contract when she was just 17.
What am I doing with my life? So, as we know, she's had a bit of a rough time - in the papers, on social media.
Turns out she'd contacted the UK Police about it.
A suspected stalker.
Really? Sounds like someone got her home address and was writing some pretty nasty letters.
Threatening.
So, if someone was spying on her at the clinic Could be connected, right? Yeah, maybe.
Let's see if we can get a copy of that case file.
Oh, here it is! HE CHUCKLES Oh, that's what you meant.
Yup.
Our topsy-turvy toothbrush.
Right, so, if we're saying that Ayana was poisoned, let's start with the five people she had contact with in Saint Marie.
Her mother, Sandra White.
Been staying at the Paradise Bay Hotel ever since Ayana checked in to rehab.
Worked as a hairdresser and then became Ayana's manager when her career started to take off.
What about this guy? Dr Mark Fuller.
Psychiatric Consultant and Clinical Director at Ocean View.
Worked in a high-end clinic in Mayfair up until two years ago, when he moved to Saint Marie.
Yeah, I came across some chatter on a couple of online patients' forums.
Sounds like he left under a bit of a cloud.
Inappropriate behaviour.
Uh, I left a message for the clinic in Mayfair to call me back.
What about these two? Evann Parry and Ariel Fanshaw.
Obviously, patient confidentiality means we can't access the files at the clinic, but what do we know? Evann was born and raised in Wales.
Moved to London to work in the City, in finance.
Seems like Ariel comes from a pretty rich family.
Left school when she was 16.
And there's not much we know after that.
Which leaves us with this lady.
Health care assistant Darlene Curtis.
Morning, Dr Fuller.
Um, I'm going to ask Monique to cover your shift today, Darlene.
And for the foreseeable.
I think, um, in light of what's happened, it's probably best if, you know Oh, no, you don't.
Sorry? I know my rights.
Innocent until proven guilty.
I have done nothing wrong.
So, if you'll excuse me, Dr Fuller, I have patients to take care of.
Say, sir Yeah? You should see this.
It's from Ayana's bag.
I checked with Darlene.
She said Ayana had been writing that morning on the beach.
Ayana.
Group therapy's starting.
But there's nothing written in it.
It's blank.
And, look, the top two pages have been torn off.
Nothing in the bin in Ayana's room? Huh.
Sir.
Yeah? That was the secretary at Dr Fuller's old clinic in London.
That cloud he left under Big one? Apparently, he'd been having a relationship with one of his female patients, much younger than him.
Guess who it was? No way.
It was about three years ago.
When Ayana would've been 19.
She'd never really come to terms with the death of her father.
She developed some addictive tendencies in her teens to cope with his loss.
That's why she came to see you? She was writing her first album at the time.
The pressure was on.
She turned to her vices.
And you, as a qualified and professional psychiatrist, decided it would be appropriate to begin a relationship with her? It really wasn't like that.
So, what was it like? I was feeling pretty lost myself, back then.
I'd just come out of a divorce.
I was feeling bruised.
And I lost perspective.
I could tell Ayana was developing feelings for me.
So, you took advantage of that? No.
No.
Well Look, I deeply regret my actions.
But you need to understand, we were both in need of emotional comfort.
We were able to give that to each other.
How long did this go on for? About four months.
And then I came to my senses.
So, I ended it, told Ayana it was wrong and we couldn't see each other again and we didn't.
Until she came here? Yes.
And how did that happen? Well, she reached out to me.
Said she was in a bad place again.
Everything that was going on in her life, and So, the record company suggested that she seek help, go to rehab.
But it was her choice to come here? Hm.
And since she's been here, have you? No.
No.
There was nothing between us, I swear.
I was here to help.
That's all I wanted to do.
I want to talk to that detective right now! Please, Mr Parry, you can't go barging in there Seriously, open the door.
Get out here now! Mr Parry, just calm down.
You think Ayana was murdered, don't you? We're just covering our bases.
I know who did it.
I've had my doubts about her since I got here.
I thought I had issues, but that one Mr Parry, who are you talking about? Ariel.
I saw her giving Ayana an aspirin the same night she died.
Are you sure? Look, Ayana was in Ariel's room, right.
I was passing, it was gone six and I saw Ayana taking this white capsule from her.
Next thing, I find out that Ayana's had an allergic reaction and they're saying it's murder.
I wouldn'tdidn't kill Ayana.
She was my friend.
But you were seen giving her a white capsule the same night that she died.
Are you denying that? SHE EXHALES SHARPLY Ariel, look at me.
All we want is to try and work out why Ayana died.
And I know you want to help with that, right? SHE EXHALES DEEPLY I did give her something.
But it wasn't aspirin.
They're natural supplements.
Goldenseal root? Turmeric capsules? Olive leaf extract.
Magnesium.
That's what I gave her.
Magnesium.
It helps with stress.
Look, Ayana was like me.
She didn't like what they prescribed us here.
She preferred natural remedies.
Did the clinic know you had these? Of course.
Dr Fuller insists on total honesty from us.
Anyone else know about them? Just Evann, it seems.
She could still have given Ayana aspirin, but claimed it was a magnesium supplement.
But why? As far as we know, the two were good friends.
And even if she did, we know that Ayana didn't die till about four hours later.
PHONE BUZZES It wouldn't take that long for an allergic reaction to kick in.
Marlon.
What you got? Who? She's what? OK, I'll be right there.
You all right, sir? I don't believe this.
Izzy! What are you doing here? Here he is! Oh, come on, give me a hug.
No, seriously, what's going on? I've come to visit.
And if you'd bothered to call me back, I could've let you know.
What, let me know the day before you got on the plane? Yeah.
Well, it was all a bit last-minute, to be honest, but you know me, Little Miss Spontaneity! Don't do that.
Hi! I'm Naomi.
Oh, nice to meet you, Naomi.
I'm Izzy.
His sister.
Yeah, I got that.
Look, I know you hate surprises, but I had a bit of holiday to take and I just thought, "Why not?" You must be a tiny bit pleased to see me, Nev? You don't change, do you? No, neither do you.
You sure you don't want a pully on over all that? You know it's pushing 40 out there.
I'm a detective, all right? I'm supposed to look smart! Oh, whatever.
Come on! What about this hug? Ah! Ah, you've missed me, really.
No, I have not.
I'm in the middle of a case.
How about I get Marlon to run you over to my place and then you can settle in, all right? Marlon? Please? Sounds good.
Thank you, Marlon.
Oh.
Oh, great.
Hello, sir.
Afternoon, everyone.
Sir.
Sir.
I see we have a visitor.
Uh, yes, sir.
This is my sister, Izzy, who was just leaving, weren't you? Oh.
So, this is the Commissioner.
My reputation appears to precede me.
No, not at all, sir, it doesn't.
She'sshe's thinking of someone else.
Can you leave now, please? Nice to meet you, Commissioner.
Hopefully, we can have a proper chinwag some time.
Compare notes about this one.
Hm.
I'd enjoy that very much.
See ya! Uh NEVILLE CLEARS THROA Sorry about that, sir.
Not at all.
I wondered whether you'd read the postmortem and toxicology reports yet? Not yet, sir.
Is there an issue? The postmortem states Ayana died of anaphylaxis.
And toxicology confirms traces of aspirin in her system.
However No traces of Temazepam in her system at all.
So, Darlene Curtis didn't give Ayana a Temazepam.
Must've been a mistake, then, right? She must have given Ayana aspirin instead? No, that just can't be right.
Is it possible someone interfered with the dose between you taking it from the meds cupboard and administering it to the patient? There was no-one.
I went straight to Ayana's door.
No-one came near me all the while.
Could someone have removed the Temazepam from the container and then refilled it with aspirin? That's not possible.
Why not? There's only one key to the meds cupboard.
I've been on shift the last two days.
So, no-one else had access to it between the last dose of Temazepam that I gave to Ayana and the one that I gave her on the night she died.
You know I .
.
took this job because I wanted to try and help people.
But now even I'm starting to believe that I gave that girl the wrong medication.
Sir.
Hm? If someone else did kill Ayana, they're doing a very good job of making it look like Darlene is to blame.
Someone's framing her, you mean? KNOCK AT DOOR Commissioner? I, um, just wanted to check that you were OK? Given everything that's been happening.
I'm not sure if I am.
I don't know what's going on.
Why is this happening to me? I don't know, but I can promise you, we will get to the truth of this.
I'll make sure of it.
Sir, don't you think that you're overthinking the upsy-downsy nature of the victim's toothbrush? Very possibly, Marlon.
But then againvery possibly not.
Sir.
Hm? I've been going through Ayana's emails on her laptop andbefore she came to Ocean View.
It was Dr Fuller who contacted her, not the other way round, like he said.
"I know how tough things must be for you right now.
"If you're in need of support, "there's a room here for you whenever you want it.
" Why would he make contact with her again like that? After everything that happened.
Well, either he was trying to make up for past mistakes that he'd made, or he still had feelings for her.
Sir.
Hm? I've got some files on Ayana's stalker back in London.
Have you had a chance to go through them? Started out as some pretty standard trolling from an anonymous Twitter account, but then it got pretty nasty.
Started sending letters to her home address.
Two months ago, Ayana returned to her flat to find it had been broken into.
Nothing was taken, but her bedroom had been messed up and a message was left.
That's horrible! These letters are nasty, aggressive, threatening violence, misogynistic.
Some guy getting off on tormenting Ayana? But if Ayana did see somebody in the woods, spying on her, could it be the same guy? Hm.
You know, I'm sure there's more Ariel wanted to say about whoever has been hiding in the woods.
Maybe I should speak to her again.
OK, see what you can get.
All right, let's call it a day.
Some of us have uninvited house guests to entertain.
Oh, yeah, by the way, sir, your sister's awesome.
It's so weird that you two are related, because she's just like really cool and funny and chilled and you'rewell, you know.
Thank you, Marlon.
Right, I'm going to head home before Marlon sinks the knife in any more.
Night, sir.
Sorry, sir.
No, it's fine.
Night, Inspector.
Night.
So, have you heard anything about us getting a new DS? I guess they're still looking.
You know, what? I reckon, maybe, they're lining you up for it.
Oh, I don't know.
I don't think I'm ready yet and I don't think they do either.
Not exactly beating my door down, are they? No, I'm sorry, Marlon, I've got to clear this up.
I may not be the most chilled person in the world and I'm not very cool, but, I mean, I can do funny, right? Absolutely, sir.
You're hilarious.
Night.
Night.
Night! What the? What? HE EXHALES SHARPLY I mean All right, Nev? Hey! I didn't hear you come back.
I'm starving.
Are you starving? Shall we go out? Is there anywhere good round here? Well I'll need a shower first, so a bit of privacy would be preferred, s'il vouz plait! Hold on! I'm in hell, Harry.
This is actual hell.
Wondered if you fancied some company and a bit of home-cooked Caribbean food? It's so nice to meet you in person.
And you, Catherine.
Neville never stops talking about you and this place.
I feel like we're friends already.
Maybe we should have a day out together.
We can share Neville stories.
Can people stop saying that? That'd be lovely, Catherine.
Deffo.
You've finally started wearing shorts, I see.
It's only taken you 30-odd years.
Who would've thunk it, eh? Neville Parker moving to the Caribbean to find himself.
You sure you're my brother? What about you? What brings Izzy Parker out here? Well, it's like I said.
I just fancied a bit of sun and, uh .
.
I get to see you.
Come on.
I know you.
I've been here two years and not so much as a visit and now, suddenly, out of the blue, here you are.
What's really going on? It's me and Mike.
Things aren't good.
We're not talking.
He's moved out.
Or rather, I've kicked him out, stupid, useless idiot that he is.
Oh, no.
What happened? He's asked me to marry him.
OKOK.
Is that not a nice thing? No.
It's an awful, hideous thing.
You know me, Nev.
I don't want to get married.
I need my freedom.
Haven't you been living together for, like, five years? Yeah, but that's different.
Marriage is It's just not me.
I hate weddings.
They're so obvious.
And naff.
HE LAUGHS It's really got to me, has this.
Mike's deadly serious about it so I at least owe him giving the idea time and consideration.
So, that's why I'm here.
If you cause me any trouble while you're out here, I swear I won't, Nev.
FOOTSTEPS APPROACH I promise, I won't.
Have you been in rehab before? My parents keep trying to sort me out.
And I just keep letting them down.
May I ask, what happened? I get anxious.
I always have.
SHE SIGHS Using helps me function.
Helps me get through each day.
Hm.
I look at someone like you and I just wish I had that kind of confidence.
Ariel, do you mind if I ask you something? It's about Ayana.
The other morning when you told us she was scared of whoever it was hiding in the woods, there was something else you wanted to say.
Any idea who it might have been? Thank you so much, Dr Fuller.
I was with Ayana a few days ago.
And she, um, she saw a light reflected in the trees.
Some movement.
There's someone out there.
I said that we should tell Dr Fuller.
You know, to get someone to look into it.
But she said there was no point.
She knew why someone was out there.
She said it was all her mum's doing.
What did she mean by that? I don't know.
But I remember her saying .
.
the way her mum carried on .
.
she'd be the death of Ayana.
Ariel, thank you so much for talking to me.
I really appreciate it.
Of course.
Have a good night.
You, too.
Hello? DOOR CREAKS Someone there? Hello? SHE GASPS Mr Parry! I can still feel her hereAyana.
I'm sorry, but this is a crime scene.
You can't just force your way in.
I didn't, it was already like that.
The door was already busted open? LOUD THUD Stop! Police! I said, police! Stop! GROANING In case you haven't realised, you're under arrest.
HANDCUFFS CLICK Gerald Wigsworth.
56 years of age.
London born and bred.
Spent most of his life working as a tabloid journalist and photographer.
Though, looking online, he hasn't had much work published for a few years now.
Yes, says his last job was with the News Of The World.
they closed down a while back.
This was in his bag.
Had a quick check.
There's tonnes of photos of Ayana during her stay at the clinic, dating back two weeks.
Most of them taken from a distance, out in the woods.
So, it wasn't Ayana's stalker.
It was a paparazzo.
Look, I'm not denying it, all right? But in this business, you've got to go where the story takes you.
That's why you broke into our crime scene? To take pictures? Going the extra mile.
But if this was such a good story, why have we not seen it in the papers? You've been here two weeks now.
You've not had any articles published for a long while.
Editors are a different breed these days.
They're wary of my type, the old guard.
So, no-one was interested in buying the story? Not at first.
But now Ayana's dead.
It's the old cliche, sex and death and all that.
Yeah, it doesn't look very good for you, though, does it, Mr Wigsworth? The papers weren't keen, but now Ayana's dead in rehab and here you are on the ground, pictures ready to go.
Hold on a sec.
You're not seriously suggesting I killed her? I mean, I may be underhand, but I'm not that bloody underhand! I wouldn't kill for a story.
Ever.
According to one of the patients, Ayana believed it was her mother's doing that you were out there, in the woods.
Is that true? Sandra and I, we go way back.
Grew up on the same estate.
She knew I was in need of work.
It was her that tipped you off? She was worried about Ayana's profile dipping when she was in rehab.
Wanted to keep her in the public consciousness.
Sandra was just playing the game.
Sir.
Yeah? I've got something you should see.
I've found some photos on Gerry Wigsworth's camera, taken on Ayana's last morning, when she was on the beach.
I think the reason those front pages were ripped out of her notebook, was because .
.
Ayana ripped them out herself.
She folds them up and puts them in an envelope.
She was sending a letter.
But who to? Marlon, can you go back a few pictures to before she tears the pages out? Can you zoom in on that? I'll try my best.
"Dear, Mum, this is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, "but I can't go on like this any more.
"The past few weeks in rehab have made me realise how dysfunctional "my relationship is with you, and that needs to end.
" Now, we were only able to enlarge some sections of the first page, but I think the gist is pretty clear.
She'd decided to leave rehab that same night, go back to her life and move on without you.
I had to raise that girl all on my own.
When Clinton died, the responsibility, it all fell on my shoulders.
And it was hard doing it all, just me.
So, when Ayana showed some talent and started earning money I could stop worrying.
That's why you became her manager? Finally, there was money coming.
I had some security.
And I just wanted to make sure it stayed like that.
But if she was going to part ways, you'd lose it all again.
Right? Except now, YOU inherit everything.
You think I did it? Killed my own daughter? It's a strong motive, Ms White.
I get that.
You're right, it is.
Huh, yeah, there's just one minor detail.
The day that she died, I didn't go anywhere near that clinic.
So, you can check your CCTV and you'll see.
If it was me that gave her an aspirin, how the hell did I do it? We'll need the full letter that Ayana sent to you.
Commissioner.
Sir, can you take a look at this, please? I think I found our new detective, Sergeant.
Oh, that's great news, sir.
I'm just on my way to confirm the transfer now.
Afternoon.
Sir.
Right, well, I have no idea where we go from here with this case HE CLEARS THROA Say something to him.
No.
It's OK, really.
NEVILLE CHATS INDISTINCTLY Speak to him.
No, Marlon.
Just leave it.
If you don't do it, I will.
Don't you dare! Hey! What is going on with you two? I'm trying to solve a murder case here! Nothing, sir.
Sorry, sir.
Sir.
I know it's not my call, but I really think you should give Sergeant Thomas the DS job.
Because she really wants it and I think she'd be really good at it because, you know, she's really cool.
I did not want him to do that, sir.
Is it true? You want the job? Kind of.
But I know I'm maybe not ready yet and I still have a lot to learn, so I completely understand if you don't want to give me the job.
HE EXHALES DEEPLY Look, Naomi, I just The truth is, and having been somewhat put on the spot here, you I absolutely think we should give you the job.
I'm sorry, what? Well, in the last 12 hours on this case, you befriended a vulnerable witness and gathered vital information from her.
And arrested a potential suspect.
At the same time, you worked out who it was that was spying on Ayana which, in turn, explain why two pages were ripped out of her notebook.
And in doing so, uncovered a very strong motive for her own mother.
I mean, that's extremely impressive detective work.
I think you'd be an excellent DS.
You do? Yeah.
Sir, don't you think you should go and speak to the Commissioner, you know, before he gives somebody else the job? Sir! ENGINE STARTS Sir! ENGINE RUNS Sir! Sir, sir, sir! Inspector? What are you doing? Sir, I'm sorry.
Look, I think Sergeant Thomas should be our new DS.
I know it's a big step up, but she'll give it her all, sir.
NEVILLE PANTS And after today, I think she'll keep me on my toes.
You're sure about this? Positive, sir.
I guess the answer was inside our station all along.
Inside all along? Which is to say, it was there from the start.
That's what I gave her, magnesium.
It helps with stress.
She'd decided to leave rehab that same night and move on without you.
Did the clinic know you had these? Of course.
Dr Fuller insists on total honesty from us.
Now, isn't that the strangest thing? The file on Ayana's stalker.
Where is it? I'll get it for you, sir, but you should take a look at that letter.
It's the second page, sir.
The bit we couldn't see on the photo.
Ayana's written something else.
What? Her plan to leave rehab, she was not doing it alone.
Look.
"I've met someone here.
Another patient.
"He's broken, damaged, like me.
"But we can help each other.
" Evann Parry? He and Ayana were having a relationship together.
He was going to finish his treatment at Ocean View, then in a month's time, join her on tour.
And it sounded like things were really serious between them.
Yeah, of course.
Of course, really serious.
It would have to have been.
That's why she had to die.
Has he solved it yet? Marlon.
The letters that the stalker sent.
And when Ayana's flat was broken into.
Can you get the dates for me, please? I'm on it, sir.
You've worked it out, then? Yes, sir, I think I have.
It didn't make any sense .
.
and now it does.
Ayana Jelani's death initially appeared to be nothing more than a tragic accident, facilitated by an unwitting health care assistant, who, it seemed, gave her the wrong medication by mistake.
Our murderer assumed Ms Curtis would roll over and concede the error she appeared to have made.
What they underestimated was her own strength of conviction.
Is that not so, Dr Fuller? Sorry? What? I don't We know that you murdered Ayana and then tried to frame Darlene for it.
No.
No, that's not I didn't.
Yes, Doctor, you did.
And now we're going to prove it.
The pill Darlene Curtis gave to Ayana on the night she died was exactly what it was supposed to be - a 10mg Temazepam.
There was no evidence of Temazepam in her system because Ayana didn't actually swallow that pill.
We know that Ayana had issues with the medication she was being given here.
She didn't like what they prescribed for us here.
She preferred to use natural supplements.
So, we believe that when she was given that Temazepam, she pretended to swallow it.
And instead hid it underneath her tongue, so that she could then remove it and dispose of it later.
I believe you knew, Dr Fuller, because Ayana had already admitted it to you.
Because you insisted on totally honestly, right? Nothing less.
And in acquiring that information, you were able to formulate a plan to murder Ayana.
It was the mention of slow-release Mesalamine that first got me thinking.
A capsule that dissolved more slowly, delaying the release of whatever was inside it.
What if one was filled with, for example, aspirin, and a young woman who happened to be allergic to aspirin consumed one? You wouldn't see a reaction straight away.
It would only be after a few hours when the pill had fully dissolved.
Which was exactly what happened with Ayana.
Dr Fuller acquired some clear, empty, slow-release capsules and filled them with crushed aspirin.
And once you did, you switched the white magnesium powder capsules with white aspirin capsules.
So that when Ariel gave what she thought was a magnesium pill to Ayana, it was actually a slow-release capsule containing aspirin.
To guarantee that Ayana died from an allergic reaction, you had to make sure she was unable to use her EpiPen to save herself.
So, at a convenient moment, you stole it from her bag.
Leaving the stage now set for Ayana to die alone in her room of anaphylactic shock.
We know you were one of the first people on the scene when Ayana's body was found.
Clear the room.
Call an ambulance.
I'll stay with the body.
While you were waiting for the paramedics to arrive, you replaced the EpiPen back where you found it, in her bag.
So, it would look like Ayana was unable to get to it in time to save her life.
Whywhy did you do it? Evann, we read Ayana's letter to her mother, explaining how you and her found each other here and how you planned to continue your lives together after rehab.
Unfortunately, for you, that was the last thing Dr Fuller wanted.
He'd been having a relationship with one of his female patients much younger than him.
And when you as good as lost your job at the clinic in London and Ayana ended things with you, you came here, to try and move on.
But you obviously struggled to let go of her.
Sir, just like you said.
Thanks, Marlon.
I had Officer Pryce check something for me.
The dates when three letters were posted in London.
And the date that Ayana's flat was broken into.
Because all of these acts were committed by a suspected stalker and all of these dates tally with trips Dr Fuller made back to the UK, to attend medical conferences.
Because there was no stalker, was there? It was just you trying to scare Ayana at a time when she was already spiralling out of control.
You accelerated that process by triggering her addictions, making her feel like she was being stalked, threatened.
Two months ago, Ayana returned to her flat to find it had been broken into.
And a message was left.
So she would turn to the one person who had helped her before.
The one person she hoped would help her again.
You.
Except there was one thing you never counted on - her meeting someone else.
Someone she had a real connection with, who she really cared about and who really cared about her.
I still feel her here, Ayana.
Which brings us, finally, to this.
It was bothering me from the start.
The upside-down toothbrush we found in Ayana's bathroom.
Why would anyone do that? And then I realised, if she was planning to leave that night, she will have packed a suitcase, which meant that you had to unpack it and replace everything back where you found it.
Her clothes, her washbag .
.
her toothbrush.
And in your rush to do so, you didn't notice, that you'd put the toothbrush back upside down.
So, to answer your question, Mr Parry.
Why did Dr Fuller kill Ayana Jelani? To stop her from leaving.
To stop her being in love with someone else.
To stop her living.
We were so right together.
Why couldn't she see that? Make the arrest, please, Marlon.
So, I guess that was our last case as partners, then, Sarge.
Thank you, Marlon, for what you did earlier, at the station.
Saying I'd make a good DS.
That was really nice of you.
Ah, don't mention it.
And, to be honest, if it means it gets you off my back, then it's a win for me, really.
That was the owners.
Patients are being relocated to another clinic and this place is closing down for the near future.
After going through all that, I don't get to keep my job anyway.
But thank you, though, Commissioner.
You listened to me and you believed me.
That is all I wanted.
You know .
.
we are currently an officer down.
Um, I am not a trained officer if you hadn't noticed.
I know.
But you could come help us out as a civilian.
You said you wanted to do a job where you could help people.
So, come help us help people.
Why're you doing this? I just got this feeling you'd be a good fit.
What do you say? I say, let's give it a go.
You know, Dwayne said that you were a good man.
And he wasn't wrong.
I'll see you tomorrow.
It looks like we have a full team again.
Yes, sir.
Thank you.
And I'm glad you agree with me about Sergeant Thomas.
Hm, I had a feeling she'd prove her worth.
That feels good.
And after all the recent goings on, it'd be good to get back to normal again.
UPBEAT MUSIC Oh, no! Er, oh, excuse me, excuse me.
Excuse me.
MUSIC CONTINUES, ANIMATED CHATTER Uh! On my bed! Izzy! Sorry, sorry.
Izzy? Izzy! MUSIC CONTINUES Izzy? ECHO: Izzy! I want to report a murder.
Either Eve was trying to report her own impending murder or someone else's murder entirely.
So, realistically, the only way to get onto this terrace is through that house.
You mean, it's one of them that did it? I told you this case was getting juicy, Inspector Parker.
Good morning, Officer.
This really isn't how it looks.
Where's Darlene? This is a new role for you.
I'm keen to help out in any way I can.
What's happened? My sister's happened.
Dread to think what carnage she's caused since I left this morning.
I hate you, Neville Parker!
