Face Off (2011) s11e09 Episode Script
Frightening Families
1 McKenzie: Previously on "Face Off: All-Stars" Your challenge is to create a comedic fantasy duo fit to star in an epic adventure film.
- Yay! - [laughing.]
McKenzie: George and Cig's quirky couple carried them to victory.
But Keaghlan and Melissa stumbled and were sent home.
And tonight, the competition gets turned on its head.
Remember when I said this season would be full of twists and turns? - Yeah.
- Well, this one is a game-changer.
- Yes! - So excited.
I can't look at it anymore.
I don't like the way it looks.
We always have a game plan and then things fall apart.
I have to think of a way to fix this.
McKenzie: Find out what happens next.
This is "Face Off: All-Stars.
" [all cheering.]
[exciting music.]
[dramatic music.]
- Into the middle of nowhere.
- Yeah, terrifying.
We're on this, like, dirt road, and it's rainy and dreary.
I hope it's a horror challenge.
I don't know where we're at, but it feels like we're in the middle of nowhere.
Ooh, what is it? Oh, it's a little town.
- Uh-oh.
- Oh, oh.
We pull up to this rinky-dink, weird, out in the middle of nowhere town, and McKenzie's standing next to a sign that says, "Maps.
" It's a creepy setting, for sure.
This place is super cool.
- Good morning, everyone.
All: Good morning.
Welcome to the middle of nowhere.
All: Yeah.
Now before I tell you about your next challenge, I have a giant surprise for you.
Remember when I said this season would be full of twists and turns? - Yeah.
- Well, this one is a game-changer.
Until now, you've been competing as teams of two.
This week, each team will combine with another team to create two super teams.
I have no idea what to expect, so here we go.
I know this is a little different, but you're gonna need the extra firepower to handle the challenges we have in store for you.
- Oh, my God.
- [unintelligible whispering.]
I can only imagine the amount of work this challenge is gonna be.
[chuckles.]
Okay, we're gonna let you choose which team you want to pair up with, so go ahead and do that right now.
[laughter.]
- Done.
- Yay.
- I'm excited.
- Yep.
- Going down.
All right, now that we have our new super teams, let's get into your next Spotlight Challenge.
In classic horror films like - Yes! - So excited.
Okay, well let me at least give you a couple of examples.
- Sure.
- So in films like "The Hills Have Eyes," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," and "House of 1000 Corpses," lost travelers stop and ask for directions at remote gas stations just like this one.
Unfortunately, the creepy attendants give them false directions that lead them astray, allowing some sort of mutated or deranged family member to pick them off one by one.
Oh, my gosh, stop.
So in this Spotlight Challenge, each super team will create a sadistic family of three deranged mutants.
- Dude! - Yes! - Yes, yes! - Oh, my God.
You're giving me wiggle fingers.
Finally, we've done all this pretty [bleep.]
, and now we get to do something scary and bloody and snotty, which is so awesome.
Let's go.
Let's go right now.
Now I do want you to have a little inspiration when you create your family, so next to me are two maps, each leading to a different nearby location where your family might live.
Super team two, you're up first.
Come choose a map.
- Can I pick it? - We elect you.
- What do you guys want? - I'll get it.
[laughter.]
We're already getting along great.
[laughter.]
I like the one with all the signs.
- Adam, pick one, man.
- They're the same.
No the one the signs.
- You want the signs? - Yeah, 'cause it says [laughter.]
What? That's a team leader right there.
Teamwork.
All right, super team one, please come take your map.
- Can I pick it? - Go for it.
- Yeah, get it.
- Oh, thank you guys.
- Appreciate it.
- Absolutely.
George, that's gonna be a wonderful choice.
- Great choice.
- Oh, you guys are the best.
- You're the best.
- Aww.
- You're the best.
- All right, guys, because there are four of you working together, you will only have two days to complete your characters.
So please use your time wisely.
Before you go, I have one more big piece of information to share.
From this point forward, there will be no more immunity, and we will be eliminating individuals instead of teams.
Wow.
Oh, my gosh.
This is crazy.
We don't want anybody going home, especially when you've built such a great relationship with your teammate, but now it's really anyone's game.
All right, guys, it's time to follow your maps and get started on your designs.
Can't wait to see your deranged families.
- Yeah.
- Bye.
- Where are we going, Logan? - Well, hold on a second.
Take out this map here.
How do you operate one of these things? It's right.
I don't get where- - If you don't get this - All right.
All right, bye, guys.
So Logan's leading the way, and I look over, and I see the place that we would have had was a [bleep.]
circus.
- No.
- Okay.
All right, so who's got an idea? We end up at a abandoned military base.
There's bombs everywhere.
There's these barrels of poison.
It literally looks like a testing facility that just went haywire.
The first thing I thought of was nuclear testing.
- Yep, yep.
- One character could be blazoned on one side from the flash of a nuclear explosion.
- Okay.
- Burned.
Now what do they do? I personally think we should have a little girl.
I feel like she should be the one that lures.
They are a family that take others.
- Right, a family dri - You feel like you have a sympathy factor for her.
Yes.
- Plus, a lost child.
- Yeah.
- A lost child factor.
- Yep.
So we come up with the idea that our military family is broken up between a little girl and her mother and father.
We want them to be set in the '40s-type era, And they fall victim to being tested on and it just went totally wrong.
Well, like you just said, to keep it practical, why couldn't you do something I've done a lot of things with the teeth, or you can pull a lip up and keep it there.
Absolutely.
Something like this in this particular challenge.
I always wanted to do that.
That's definitely a good way to go.
We have a concept, but I'm not as excited about it as the rest of the team.
I don't want to go against the grain, so I'm just hoping that things will come together once we start to sculpt.
- Festering, just - Yes.
There's more black in the paint job than there is reds.
- Yeah.
- Mm-hmm.
- [grunting.]
- Oh, my gosh.
We end up at an abandoned circus.
There's dumbbells, a big mallet, and a big cage, so that gives us a lot of ideas for kind of a freak show-type family.
Obviously we have to do something circus-themed.
It could be any freak.
Could be any freak.
Could we make him hydrocephalic? A water head baby.
Ooh, if he was in a wheelchair.
Oh, yeah, I wanted to do I was gonna say a wheelchair.
- Like "The Hills Have Eyes.
" - Yeah.
So our concept for our family is the "Ma" character used to be the strongwoman, and the father, humanzee organ grinder, kidnap people and force them to perform for their son, the creepy ringmaster, before they kill them and eat them.
Come to my playground, kiddies.
[laughter.]
- I'm feeling great.
We have a super solid concept.
All the characters work really well together.
And it's super scary, which is the whole point of a horror challenge.
All right, let's get back to the lab.
- Let's go back.
- Okay.
- Let's do it.
- Cool.
All right, you guys, let's go back.
- All right.
- Yeah.
- Oh, you got the map wet! - Aww.
- Now we'll never get back.
- We don't know where - we're going.
- Hi, guys.
What are you guys doing? Nunya.
"Nunya"? Oh, cool.
[techno music.]
So I think it would be a good team dynamic if whenever somebody is, like, about finished, let's get, like, the whole team approval on each piece.
- Absolutely.
- I like that.
We've only got ten hours today, even though we have four people, and these are all big, intense makeups.
So we have to start moving.
You want to sculpt right next to each other? Well, sure, okay.
Cig and Evan are gonna be handling our humanzee pinhead.
Ben will be doing the hydrocephalus character, and then I'm gonna handle the strongwoman.
She's been in the circus freak show business for a long time.
She's got burn scars around her mouth from when she used to be a fire eater.
She's got scars on her throat from when she used to swallow swords.
And I want to show that in the sculpture.
How old do you guys think Mama is? Depends on if she has a Jack Lalanne juicer or not.
- I got one.
- [laughing.]
Maybe something for the dad? We have three makeups, so Logan's starting on the mother's face, Adam's starting on the dad's face, and Tyler's starting on the blender pieces for our characters.
I start working out the gag for the little girl's cleft palate.
I use wig lace and string to pull back my lip.
I'm trying a few different techniques, even gluing an appliance over it to see how it'll lay, but it's not working out.
So? I don't think there's enough of a change to warrant that.
- Yeah.
- No.
We all agree that it doesn't look good.
So I'm just gonna sculpt the effect into the appliance and hope it'll work.
It's good.
[upbeat music.]
- Push this even further.
- Further? To really seal the weight on the head.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
I can see that, 'cause it's asymmetrical from the back.
I'm working on the hydrocephalus cowl for the ringmaster.
Hydrocephalus is an illness where water builds up in the brain, and the skin is stretched out so much that it looks transparent.
The back of the head will essentially be swollen to get the illusion that gravity has taken over.
A lot of the fluid would build up, and that's where all the weight would shift.
Fortunately, I don't have to do too much detail because normally the skin would stretch a lot of the skin detail out.
As I'm working on the father's face piece, I can't help but think what we're doing, as appropriate as it is, comes off a little conceptually bland.
I think these are all obvious, these character archetypes.
The little girl and the father in particular, they just seem like something I expect to see out of a film like this, which is good, but at the same time, we want to make something they haven't necessarily seen before.
I agree, but I feel like what else, you know? I don't know.
This season, Logan and I have been on the bottom several times.
And Emily and Tyler have not.
So I'm very worried that if we're on bottom, Logan or I will be going home.
[dramatic music.]
.
I don't know, I think I think these are all a little obvious.
So in the back of my head, I think what we're doing, as appropriate as it is, it comes off a little conceptually bland.
The little girl and the father seem like something I expect to see out of a film like this.
I think we can definitely pull it off.
Okay.
I'm still concerned that our characters need something to make them pop, but right now, I just need to continue sculpting or else we won't have time to mold it.
[upbeat music.]
Hi, everybody.
[various greetings.]
Cig and I are working on the humanzee pinhead guy.
So we're trying to bring a little bit of the gorilla anatomy mixed in with a pinhead.
Kinda trying to hybridize the two.
'Cause he's gonna be a humanzee.
Okay, yeah, I think that's gonna turn out more like a gorilla than a pinhead.
- Okay.
- You know? Take this point and maybe move it out here a little higher.
Okay.
All right, let's move on.
See what you got next.
Cool.
Ben, is this yours? Yes, this is what I'm working on.
This is our ringmaster.
He has hydrocephalytus.
So I sculpted most of the weight over to the side.
I like that.
What kind of coloring you gonna do in here? Uh, real pale and translucent.
There's going to be a lot of veins going up the head as well.
That sounds good.
Now, George, let's see yours.
All right, so this is Mama.
She's the matriarch of the family.
She worked a bunch of different jobs in the freak show.
She was the strongwoman.
She was also a sword swallower, but they came out in the wrong holes.
And she was a fire eater Uhhuh.
But she got badly burned.
- I think you need more burn.
- Gotcha.
You know, maybe an upper lip burned a little bit, then down here burned a little bit.
That really looks like a burn.
So the first character we have is the dad.
- Okay.
- This was our initial sketch for the dad.
Are you making a plate or anything for some small pieces? - Yeah.
- And it doesn't need much, but it just needs a little something to sell it.
And then teeth too, they start to rot out.
- Yes.
- So whether you use teeth Or dark at least darken them up.
- Or darken the zone, yeah.
- Next.
Then mother is next.
The mom is this super distorted face, but because she's so vain, she tries to cover it up with makeup.
We're trying very hard just giving that uncomfortable sensation of bumpy skin.
And on top of this, we'll do beauty makeup.
I like this little one you have here by the nose here.
- Very subtle.
- Yeah, subtle, but standing up a little bit higher with enough depth to them so they really show so it just doesn't blend in with just the total flat skin.
Emily, let's see what you're doing.
So Tyler, um, and I have been switching off on it.
They use the little girl as a lure, so we didn't want to make her as destroyed if she was all It was just sort of stay cute and - Minimal.
- Pity.
Mostly minimal, yeah.
But, I tell you, you want to do enough though.
You want to do enough here for her to gather the sympathy.
Even if it was a couple of little blisters or something.
- Okay.
- Good.
Mr.
Westmore gives us some suggestions.
I'm still not thrilled about our concept, but we'll take Mr.
Westmore's input and see how it looks at the end of the day.
Thank you.
Good luck, good luck, good luck, good luck.
Thank you.
Good-bye and good luck to everybody.
[various good-byes.]
[upbeat music.]
Why is this so hard to do? I'm having a little bit of trouble with where the pinhead should be formed.
Mr.
Westmore wants the point to be more in the center.
But I'm not liking the way it looks.
I want make it look like a real pinhead.
We also want to give it a gorilla-shaped head.
So trying to find a way to balance it out.
Westmore keeps saying in the middle, and I just think, like Honestly, I like where it's at right now.
I like where it's at, too.
I want to say that you might be overthinking it a little bit 'cause it does look bad-ass.
- You sure? - Yeah.
'Cause I can't look at it anymore.
I think that's what's gonna make us a really good team is making sure that everything is where everybody else wants it to be ultimately, and we decide to just keep it the same.
It's a risk, but hopefully it works.
- Turn that frown upside down.
- It's upside down.
[laughter.]
I like the idea what he said.
Continue that down, - that line right there.
- Mm-hmm.
- And keep that, still.
- Yeah.
Mr.
Westmore says that the little girl's face is too subtle, and I have to agree with him.
In this competition, we can't just put out little makeups that are just well done.
We have to have a full character.
I want to see some gross disease stuff.
So I add a lot more to the face.
I extend it over the eyebrow, over the neck, and the cheek, so I feel like we're in a better spot with it.
The little flaps would be right here.
That way we open it up Oh, so it's like- - It'll still hang, but when we close it, it'll fold around.
Both: Yeah.
If you gain a lot of weight and then you lose it, the skin stays stretched out.
So for the "Ma" character, we thought it'd be really creepy if she had arm flaps hanging from the arms.
Just adding to the creepy, grotesque nature of the character.
We really want these to move nicely, so we're gonna run them in silicone and add a lot of deadener to really sell the effect.
- Ooh, gross.
- Yeah.
[techno music.]
I really like them.
They look good.
Okay.
Want me to mold those or what? Yeah.
Once the boils and nodules are sculpted, then I'm ready to mold them.
I'm a little concerned that with only one person being eliminated, maybe I should be doing larger pieces.
But these blender pieces are pretty important because they are gonna cover all of the exposed skin of our mutated family.
[upbeat music.]
Is there a bin with bones and stuff in it in the other room? I'm going to get started on some accent pieces.
And in this case, it's human casserole.
Hungry? The mother's gonna have this tray, and she's gonna open it, and it's gonna be this disgusting mess of flesh.
So I'm dicing up chunks of this Gel-Foam so I'd have this liquefied, fleshy concoction.
That's awesome.
I add some rust-looking colors, cornmeal, fingernails, some hair, an eyeball, and, uh, some skin.
Ow! This is a painful process.
I don't make very many casseroles at home.
You can ask my wife, but I think she'll be proud of me for this one.
Martha Stewart's got nothing on me.
Viola.
Time management is key, and somehow, we actually have a little bit of time left.
So we all just start playing around with wigs.
[laughter.]
Who does this look like? It's been a long day, so it's really fun to just kinda goof around knowing that we're going to really hit it hard tomorrow.
We should start a band right now.
11 minutes.
[fast-paced music.]
[laughter.]
Don't shake it.
Our molds are great.
We have our casserole.
We have our props.
We have everything we need.
I'm just still worried that there's a problem with our characters conceptually.
- I'll do the dad.
- Okay.
I think we always try to have a great game plan and then things fall apart.
There's really nothing jarring inside the silhouette.
Everything is sort of who you expect it to be.
And I know we need something that's going to make these characters stand out against a circus.
And I have to think of a way to fix this.
[dramatic music.]
.
[fast-paced music.]
All right.
- [imitating panting.]
- [whistling.]
Cig, don't ever let anybody tell you that you make a bad mold.
Look at that.
- Oh, that's a beauty.
- It's gorge.
- How is it? - Great.
Last night, we were in a spot where we weren't very happy with our concept.
So today, we're gonna switch it up.
Before we went to bed last night, Adam suggested, "Let's make the little girl the biggest character.
" So we're gonna switch the models for the daughter and father characters.
And we're going to put the little girl's prosthetic piece "on a 6'5" male model.
This is gonna be a tricky application.
It's very risky to completely change it up and apply a prosthetic that fits a specific model onto a different one, but I'm confident we can pull it off.
Bald caps.
Oh, God.
[fast-paced music.]
- Oh, hey.
- Hey.
[various greetings.]
- What's up, dream team? - Oh, yeah.
As soon as the models get to the lab, I start to make the "Ma" character's gum plates.
So I take thermoplastic, which is little plastic beads, you heat 'em up in water, and they become this sculpting putty.
And then, I press it into her teeth and round it over until it's the right shape.
I think that's all I need to do.
Okay.
Kinda try to hold those in with your gums.
Smear smooth 'em down with your tongue.
So now, when she smiles, it looks like she's just got gums and no teeth.
And hopefully it'll help sell the realism a little bit more.
We'll pop 'em out and put 'em in here.
Okay.
Whoa, [bleep.]
.
All right, hey, that's what we got alcohol for.
[fast-paced music.]
I'm gonna start there, okay? I start straight into the face and apply this relatively large, thin face appliance.
I'm actually really fond of silicone appliances because I think they look more realistic.
I mean, you can still see these elements underneath.
Bear with me 'cause it's gonna be a little crazy.
- Good? - Mm-hmm.
But since it's such a big, and more importantly, thin silicone appliance, it's taking a little longer than I anticipated.
It's just a matter of making sure that it gets tacked down in the right areas and get it to fight right.
It's a little unwieldy, but But I'll get it.
Can you poke your neck out a little bit? - That good? - Thank you.
Mm-hmm.
[fast-paced music.]
Emily and I take on our younger girl character, which is now on our biggest model.
Making the decision to switch up some of the characters is a little nerve-wracking.
The pieces may not even fit.
But thank goodness we sculpted these pieces in sections, so we can kind of stretch and rotate until they look like the fit correctly.
And this fits you, like, perfect, so it works.
- Are you good? - Yeah.
Cig and I have to go put the humanzee cowl on, and we realize that it's a little tight.
How's that? Is that too tight on your neck or anything? I was just thinking about that.
It is kind of A little snug? So we have to take it off and, uh, readjust it.
So I trim out some more of the foam.
- Looks good, so, yeah.
- All right.
[laughter.]
- Look at that hump.
Put it back on and it's a little loose in the back, but it's actually a good thing because he's kind of an older character, so we like the way that it actually moves.
It gives it a little bit of weight and sag.
It fits a lot better.
- It looks cool.
- All right, cool.
Can I get you to lean your head forward just a little bit? The face goes down rather smoothly, especially given the last-minute change.
So now it's time to apply blenders to the rest of her head.
Are all the blenders accounted for? Yep.
Since the father will be the most affected by this nuclear fallout, he will have growths all over his head.
And because Amanda has more hair in the bald cap than Chase would have, I need to make that form make sense.
So I'm putting close to 14 prosthetics on her head in order to fill out and validated those forms.
Is this the most pieces you've ever had on you? [upbeat music.]
Ben, how are you doing? Good.
I'm about to start putting paint down.
For the hydrocephalus character, their skin is stretched out so much that it looks transparent.
So it's important on the cowl that I layer colors in a way that looks like the different elements are living on top of each other.
So I start by spattering different colors because the color breakup tricks the eye into thinking one's married into the other.
I'm gonna start going in with some veining.
This character's definitely coming to life and has a really, really disturbing look to it.
I think the judges are gonna love it.
- Look at this.
- Eww.
Guys, one hour.
[fast-paced music.]
- Hey, guys, that's time.
- Whoo! - Whoo! - [clapping.]
- I'm happy with it.
- Yeah.
I just want to bring out the contrast on her when we get in there.
We still have a lot to do.
Not only do we have to blacken out their teeth and distress all of the wardrobe, the father figure still needs to be painted.
And that's a lot to do in one hour.
[dramatic music.]
How did everything hold up? We get to the stage for Last Looks, and the first thing I do is make sure that the mom character is complete, and then I immediately start helping Adam with the father character.
That needs a little more paint.
We're at a really solid place with all these makeups, but I run into a problem.
Where did those eyebrows end up? I was supposed to pack eyebrows for Ma, and I totally forgot.
So these are the two in my kit.
Luckily, Ben had the foresight to bring an extra pair of eyebrows.
Completely saves the day.
Close your eyes.
Tyler and I finish our little girl character, but the father character needs the most help.
- What are you thinking, dude? - This back needs coloration.
So while Adam and Logan are painting the father, I start laying hair on the back of the head.
We have to work very quickly, but everything is coming together.
The family looks like a family.
There's just a few things left to get the hydrocephalus character finished.
Laying the hair, getting her in the wheelchair, and the last thing is Cig draws a tiny, little mustache with an eyebrow pencil.
That completes the character.
15 minutes, guys.
[dramatic music.]
All right, everybody.
That's time.
We're going to the show now.
So it's the end of Last Looks, and I honestly can't believe what we've done in such a short amount of time, but I'm kinda nervous.
That looks gnarly.
I see the other team's work, and it's also great.
I think this is gonna be a real tough one on the judges.
.
[suspenseful music.]
Good evening, super teams.
Welcome to the "Face Off" Reveal Stage.
Now, as a reminder, immunity will no longer be awarded to our winning team, and we will be sending home our first individual artist tonight.
Before we get down to business, please, let's say hello to our amazing series judges.
Owner of Alchemy Studios, Glenn Hetrick.
Good evening.
All: Hey, Glenn.
Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning makeup artist Ve Neill.
Hello, everyone.
All: Hi, Ve.
And, of course, creature and concept designer Neville Page.
Hi, guys.
All: Hello.
And, as you can see, we do have a very special guest judge joining us tonight.
He's an incredibly talented director, whose work includes "Friday the 13th," "Conan the Barbarian," and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
" Please give a very warm welcome to Marcus Nispel.
[applause.]
- Nice shirts.
- Thank you.
That's a nice jacket.
[Laughing.]
I'm a fan of his work.
I had to build a haunted house based off of his version of "Friday the 13th," and it was one of my favorite experiences, so I'm really excited to see what he thinks of our stuff.
Marcus, thank you so much for joining us tonight.
It's my pleasure.
Okay, let's get to it.
For your first super team Spotlight Challenge, we had you select a map that led to a disturbing destination, and asked that you to use it to inspire a sadistic family of three deranged mutants.
Let's take a look at your frightening families.
[dramatic music.]
This is the best makeup I've done, so I'm super proud.
They all look really terrific together, and I think the judges are gonna love 'em.
[dramatic music.]
I like the silhouettes, but they're not characters anyone would expect.
I don't know if this will keep us from being on bottom, but we believe these are All-Star quality makeups [suspenseful music.]
Okay, judges, why don't you get a closer look at these freakish families? Can you, uh, wrinkle your forehead and emote through the makeup? Ooh, that's cool.
Great latex job.
I love how they've managed to get the face really squeezed down small.
And I love the bit of sheen that's happening on the brown and nose.
I wish it was a bit more on the lips, et cetera.
You really can't go wrong with Fellini and drool.
No.
I'm enjoying the drool more than I should be, I think.
- Me too.
- [laughing.]
They managed with such little time to get nice radial stretching.
Its directionality from the tip of the nose out is absolutely perfect.
This, to me, is some of the finest paint work.
It feels like capillaries have actually burst under the skin.
It's interesting how it looks like "Invasion From Mars" when she tilts her head on one side, and it's like "Elephant Man" from the other side.
Just gonna pull this back.
I'd like to just see the makeup.
It's such much better without the wig.
It really is.
The wig is distracting.
- Yeah.
- Wow.
Right down to doing ears.
Holy moly.
Open 'em up more, like 'cause what they put gums on it, right? - Yeah.
- I love this.
It's that that hot grandma smile, I love it.
Ugh.
[Laughter.]
Good job.
My favorite thing about this makeup is that actually looks like the eyes are slightly askew, even though they're not because it's the performer's real eyes.
So they've used color to create form, and I think that's brilliant.
But check this out, turn around.
[chuckles.]
- Yes, so nasty.
- Very well.
- That's fantastic.
Awesome.
I love the fact that they mixed it up and put the guy in the dress and put the chick in the father's clothes.
That's pretty great.
I love the restraint shown on the prosthetics.
And exploring the character with just little things like the hair and the dress.
And it makes this makeup come to life.
That's what interests me now with the rationale behind this, you know, is it like some toxic thing that happened to them, or is it a freak show? - Eww.
- This thing is so gruesome.
It has this bizarre-o, "Fright Night-y" feel.
I just wish her face wasn't so dry.
I'm concerned about the mother character.
I had to work very quickly, so she's not looking as finished as I hoped.
If the judges don't like it, I feel like I could be on the chopping block.
All right, guys, it's time to get on Twitter and tell us who made your favorite frightening family using #faceoff.
.
[dramatic music.]
I wish her face wasn't so dry.
I had to work very quickly on the mother character, and now she may not necessarily look as finished as I'd hoped.
I think it just needs less light.
Thank you.
Okay, the judges would like to speak with all of you before making their decisions.
Adam, Logan, Tyler, and Emily, you guys are up.
- All right.
- First.
[suspenseful music.]
Okay, let's hear your story.
Our story is about a couple unaware that nuclear testing is taking place.
Eventually, they just lose their mind.
The daughter becomes lonely, so they start kidnapping men.
And then when the daughter gets sick of 'em, they turn him into a meal and feed him to the next guy that comes along.
Who did what? I took point on the father figure.
Emily sculpted the little girl.
And Tyler, we both sculpted it.
Then Logan did the mother.
Truth is, we all touched all of them.
- Yeah.
- In a maelstrom of To keep them as cohesive as possible.
Here's where I'm at.
This week for me is one of the worst because there are two teams, and they are both so awesome.
There's an eloquent restraint to big guy in a little dress.
Which is creepy right out of the gate.
We had originally designed these characters with Amanda being the little girl and Chase being the father, but it just didn't feel different.
It just felt expected, so I suggested we make Chase the little girl.
That decision made the daughter character better, but it might have detracted from the father figure.
They are so fricking creepy, every single one of 'em.
I like the fact that the daughter is a subtle makeup.
She is the creepiest one out of the whole bunch.
There is a little something about the mother.
Her skin looks very dry.
I'm wondering if this is supposed to be makeup on her.
Is that why she's gray and powdery? Yeah, she's still so vain that she continues to load the makeup on.
That way we can still see some of the grotesqueness.
But on her face itself, it's just caked-on makeup.
I figured there had to be some reason why she was so powered-looking, so I'm glad to hear that story.
Really nice.
All: Thank you.
The one thing that I find a little difficult is understanding what his disorder is specifically.
The back of the head is a unique idea.
The face is a different idea.
So it feels a little incongruous in concept as to what has happened to him.
With Papa, when the lights are full on, it looks a little bit like the pizza menu special that has everything on it, you know.
But when the lights are off, and he lowers his chin and plays the light, then I see a really, really great character.
So it's very subjective.
All: Thank you.
Thank you all.
If you'll please head back.
[suspenseful music.]
Cig, George, Evan, and Ben, please step forward.
Thank you.
[suspenseful music.]
Tell us about your circus family.
The mother and father were circus performers.
They have this child, who they dress up like the ringmaster to make him feel important, as they're kidnapping travelers, putting them in the cage and making those people the freaks.
Who did what, and why don't you individually tell us so we don't get confused? Uh, so I sculpted the monkey face for Pop-pop, and also the bingo wings.
I sculpted the face for the strongwoman and applied and painted that.
I sculpted the cowl for the monkey.
And then I sculpted the cowl and face for Moses, and painted that as well.
The wheelchair character is absolutely disgusting and fantastic.
This is really a disturbing group of people.
I mean, so creepy.
And the mother is really fantastic.
Great sculpting job.
- Dreadful wig.
- Yeah.
She would have been better bald with just a few string of hair, but really well done, guys.
All: Thank you.
The strongwoman is just gorgeous.
The sculpt is beautiful.
The flappy arms, great idea.
The hydrocephalus child ooh.
That's good.
[Laughter.]
And of course, the most perfect flourish of all - is the drawn-on mustache.
- Yes! [laughter.]
Wonder where I got that from? This is absolutely you hitting your pace, Ben.
I think it's the best thing that you've done this season.
Not only gorgeous aesthetically, it's anatomically correct.
And that takes a lot of time.
The fact that you banged that out and it's that accurate is unbelievable.
Thanks so much.
I thought the sculpting was out of this world great.
You created an iconic style.
This is a strong image on which you can sell a movie and I will look at it and I will know exactly what direction this movie goes, what kind of a movie that is.
Both: Thank you.
- That's a fantastic beard, by the way, very nice.
Thank you.
That means a lot coming from you.
[laughter.]
Thank, guys, please step back.
[suspenseful music.]
- Good work.
- Good job.
Okay, thanks guys.
If you could please head back to the makeup room while the judges deliberate.
All: Thanks, guys.
All right, judges, so let's talk about tonight's super teams.
This is a really, really hard decision, ain't it? 'Cause I loved both teams, every character.
It's gonna be a tough one.
Where do we begin? Why don't we start with Adam, Logan, Emily, and Tyler? As a family, I thought they worked extremely well together.
What was interesting was that split-second choice to swap the daughter for the father.
And that was probably the best decision because it gave them a subtle makeup on the daughter but the strongest silhouette of them all.
But the father was a bit anonymous, both in its sculpture as well as the disorder.
I think the face was also a little over-painted for me and sloppy.
If the paint job would have been a little bit more subtle, it probably would have looked much better as well.
I love the illustrative pulp-style of the mother makeup.
The teeth and the eyes make everything else pop, and it gives it this "Fright Night" pulp horror look.
She's a fantastic character, I absolutely agree.
Even down to the pre-made teeth, which so seldom work well.
It worked really well on her.
But I didn't believe that they all suffered from the same disease and from the same source of disfigurement.
When these teams are this close, that's a very important point.
Because it comes down their ability to adhere to the core of the challenge parameters.
All right, judges, let's move on to our other super team, Cig, George, Evan, and Ben.
The offspring character, the stretching of the skin.
The weight of the head, the veining that goes all the way around it, so well-sculpted.
That paint job was absolutely gorgeous.
That's probably the best example of vein painting I have seen in 11 seasons.
And you liked the painted-on mustache, right? I loved the painted-on mustache.
Because that made it real somehow.
- Loved it.
- That's what they did, yeah.
The only real complaint is I can't believe someone that can sculpt and paint that silicone face would make the decision to put that wig on it and throw it out on stage.
Yeah.
But then again, look at his haircut.
And who am I to talk? [laughter.]
All right then, judges, have you made your decisions? - We have.
- Let's bring 'em back out.
[suspenseful music.]
All right, Glenn, which super team came out on top? The winning super team is [suspenseful music.]
McKenzie: The winner of "Face Off: All-Stars" will receive a VIP trip from Kryolan Professional Make-up to one of their 85 international locations, a brand-new Hyundai Veloster, and $100,000.
.
All right, Glenn, which super team came out on top? The winning super team is [suspenseful music.]
Cig, George, Evan, and Ben.
Sweet.
[Applause.]
- Great work, guys.
- Yeah.
We love the immediate read of your circus characters, and some of the detail work on a couple of them's truly incredible.
It was very clear you guys loved working together this week.
- Thank you.
- Thanks.
It's so awesome getting the first win as a super team, and to work with George and Cig was the perfect matchup, so it was a really amazing opportunity to let us all shine.
Congratulations.
Excellent work this week.
You are all safe, and can head back to the makeup room.
All: Thank you.
- Good luck, guys.
- Thank you so much, guys.
- Love you, guys.
Good luck, you guys.
[upbeat music.]
All right, guys, unfortunately, that means the rest of you are on the bottom, and one of you will be going home tonight.
[tense music.]
Please step forward.
So, Glenn, who is going home tonight? The person going home tonight is Adam.
The competition is so strong this week that we had to look for the smallest of things to inform our decision.
In this case, it was your facial sculpture and our inability to understand what your character was suffering from.
Sorry to see you go, man.
Mm, totally cool.
Adam, I'm so sorry, but you have been eliminated.
[sighs.]
That means Logan, Tyler, and Emily, you're all safe this week and can head back to the makeup room.
Thank you.
[dramatic music.]
Adam, you're an incredibly talented designer, and I'm sure we have not seen the last of you.
Oh, no, I'm Thanks for having me again.
I, like it's really an honor.
I go home, he stays.
I go home.
[Laughter.]
- Sacrificial judge.
- I go.
Oh, thank you, it was an honor to meet you.
I'm a fan of your work.
Oh, it's-it's my pleasure.
Adam, it's been so great having you here with us again, but I have to ask if you'd please head back to the make up room and pack up your kit.
Okay.
Thank you, guys.
- Both: Good luck.
- Bye.
- Bye, Adam.
- See you, Adam.
I'm going out on a makeup that I'm proud of, and this is one of those competitions where it gets down to minutia.
It sucks, but I'd much rather go home for a tiny error than a huge folly.
- It was me.
- It was you? - What, really? - Yeah.
These are awesome artists and awesome people, and to be surrounded by present company, I couldn't have asked for more.
I came here to learn.
I came here to work with you guys, so I did that.
Get in here, Adam.
- [crying.]
- I'm sad to see you go.
I totally accomplished what I set out to do.
I was able to go bigger and go louder, and to have the opportunity to come out of my shell a bit more than I did the first go around was a really awesome opportunity, and I'm glad I had it.
