The Voice US (2011) s12e04 Episode Script
Blind Auditions, Part 4
1 Daly: Last week, "The Voice" returned for our greatest season yet Whoo-hoo! Daly: and our veteran coaches wasted no time - building their teams - Whoo! Wow! with some of the best voices they have ever heard.
Yeah! I pick Alicia! Daly: Alicia was off to a strong start with five artists.
Alicia: At this point, I'm looking for the singer-songwriter vibe.
I think I'm missing some of that.
Unh! Daly: Adam picked up four artists.
Adam: It doesn't matter what the genre is.
I'm looking for whatever inspires me.
- Come here! - I'm so excited.
Daly: Blake landed five artists.
Blake: I'm in a position now where I really need to start looking for singers that are outside of the country genre.
- Yeah! - And Gwen scored four artists.
Gwen: Now I'm looking for that young girl that I can connect to and share what I've done with.
Ericka: I'm a mom with one last shot.
If I were to make it on a team today, I think it would show my kids to dream big.
Tove Lo: Everyday people do everyday things But I can't be one of them Troy: My dad was a musical inspiration, and if I do get a chair turned around, I think he would be proud.
Gaby: Even though I've had all of these detours all my life, music is my calling.
Tove Lo: We could be heroes Whoa, ooh Gonna get it on Yeah! - Amazing.
- Wow.
Kawan: Yeah, yeah You're a killer.
I'm feeling you.
- I'm loving it.
- Wow.
I really feel that we should be working together this season.
I wanted to go ahead and start meeting the family now.
And Blake Shelton sinks to new lows.
Zip.
[Laughter.]
Don't you wish, since he's dressed like a mime, he would actually sound like a mime? [Laughter.]
Daly: And for one coach You can win this thing, and it would be a shame to see somebody screw that up for you like Adam.
the season hangs in the balance.
You are the number-one priority on Team Adam if you come to me.
- What? - Come on.
This is the whole season.
Daly: It all starts right now! My name's Micah Tryba.
I'm 24 years old, and I'm from Wheaton, Illinois.
For the past four years, I've been studying to become a veterinarian, but music's been a part of my life ever since I can remember.
Throughout school, I performed community musical theater, variety shows in coffee shops around town.
I graduated high school, planning to go to school for music education.
But financially, my plans weren't going to happen, so I spent some time at community college.
On top of all of that, my golden retriever, Lucy, became sick with spinal cancer.
She was the love of my life.
We had a great doctor that was helping us, so I really wanted to be that for somebody else someday.
I studied really hard, I saved money, and in 2012, I went to the University of Illinois as an animal science major.
I volunteer at our school's Wildlife Medical Clinic.
That gives me an amazing opportunity to do some hands-on medicine with animals that I would not have otherwise interacted with, and that in itself is so incredibly rewarding.
I been all right But I couldn't just leave music to the side.
[Vocalizing.]
Singing in an a cappella group, I feel so much more confident as a performer and as a soloist.
And this experience, I think, really prepared me for "The Voice.
" I chose to put aside veterinary school to really pursue music.
I come from an a cappella background, so I don't deal with the band and the instrumentation.
So, I think that working with these coaches would really help me to transition that into something that's successful in contemporary music today.
A lot is riding on this 90 seconds.
It is setting a course for the rest of my life.
That's it, Micah.
Just do it, baby.
[Exhales.]
Whatever you want Whatever you need Anything you want done, baby I'll do it naturally [Cheering.]
'Cause I'm every woman It's all in me-e-e-e-e-e-e-e You don't want to.
Yeah Oh, my God! I can cast a spell With secrets you can't tell Mix a special brew Put fire inside of you Anytime you feel danger or fear Then instantly, I will appear I'm every woman It's all in me Anything you want done, baby I'll do it naturally Ahhhhhhhh Ahh Yeah I'm every woman I'm every woman, think of me Think of me, oh I'm every woman, baby I'm, oh, yeah [Cheers and applause.]
- Yeah! - Whoo! - [Cheers.]
- Oh, my God! [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! I'm every woman! [Laughs.]
[Laughing.]
Hi! What's your name? My name's Micah Tryba, and I'm from Wheaton, Illinois, and I'm 24 years old.
Your voice is so powerful.
I think for me, there were a couple pocket issues that can easily be fixed by either one of these formidable, - awesome coaches.
- That's true.
This isn't an easy song 'cause you have the slow beginning, - and then it kind of picks up.
- Yeah.
I totally respect the work that you had to put in to do that, and I think that you have a beautiful, gorgeous voice, so congratulations.
[Applause.]
Thank you.
Is it "Mee-cah" or "My-cah"? - It's "My-cah.
" - Okay.
She said "My-cah," but you just weren't listening.
Now that we've found Waldo, you can you can [Laughter.]
Zip.
Micah, did you do some vocal training? Because some of the notes that you choose to sing are, like, I can't even think of those notes, much less sing 'em.
Thank you.
No, I did a cappella in in college.
- Which school? - The University of Illinois.
- Oh, okay.
- Champaign-Urbana.
I love champagne.
He likes anything with alcohol in it.
[Laughter.]
What you did just then, it blew me away.
Hopefully if you choose me, we'll get you in the finale, because I truly think you could be standing in the winner's circle.
[Applause.]
Thank you so much.
Okay, Micah, obviously, Blake Shelton is super hot, and I know it would be really fun to work with him.
Yeah.
Just don't be tempted by the dimples.
You're right.
Okay.
But I'm gonna tell you something.
I think Yeah, it's hard, right? I know.
Me, too.
Alicia, will you talk about how good-looking I am Alicia: No.
for just a second? [Laughter.]
Your intuition, your sensitivity, and your control of your voice, it was, like, so tender and sweet.
- As a female - Oh, boy.
Oh, my God.
[Laughs.]
There's things that we can work on together to get your personality through.
It's about who you are and sharing your story, so I'd love to work with you.
Thank you so much, Gwen.
[Applause.]
Micah.
She did a really good job, Blake.
- I know she did.
I agree.
- She did.
She killed it.
She killed it.
Micah, remember how good a job she did.
[Laughter.]
[Laughing.]
Okay.
I can't say that I know what it's like to be a girl, and Gwen can't say that she knows what it's like to win this show.
- Wow.
- Yes! [Laughter.]
How long that one take you to write? [Laughter.]
Why is the Hamburglar even talking right now? [Laughter.]
The Hamburglar did not wear super-chic, badass sweaters.
You look like a bar code.
[Laughter.]
The truth is, I think we all know who you should go with.
- Micah! - Yes? Who are you going to pick for your coach? Oh, my God.
Um [Chuckles.]
Come on, Micah! [Audience shouting.]
Both of you are so incredible.
I'm so thankful to be standing here right now to even have this decision.
And everything you said totally resonated with me.
Oh! I think I'm going to go out on a limb and, like, go with my gut at the beginning of this.
I-I pick Blake.
[Cheers and applause.]
Wow.
[Laughs.]
Blake: I just think that Micah has an incredible voice.
- Can I hug you? - Micah! At the end of the day, I'm still in competition against Gwen Stefani, and she's hard to beat.
- Crazy.
- Whoo! Alicia: Yeah! Blake: So the fact that Micah chose me, I'm super excited.
I think she's going to be one of those artists that everybody's going to love.
[Screams.]
- Nice job, Micah.
- I know.
I know.
Vet school is, for now, on hold.
This is what I want more than anything.
I get to work with Blake Shelton, and I literally can't believe it.
[Cheers and applause.]
Hey.
Will you give me a spanking? [Laughter.]
Ooh.
Are you mad because you can't decide if that sweater is white with black stripes or black with white stripes? [Laughter.]
Are you ashamed of yourself because your jeans are literally from a truck stop? Are you made because your knee's cold right now? [Laughter.]
Are you mad because the darker hairs on your head are getting lonely? [Laughter.]
Adam: Get out of my sight.
- Oh, don't come on.
- He hurt my feelings.
No, I'm out of here.
I'm every woman [Laughter and applause.]
Whoa.
- Oh, my gosh.
- Amazing.
Daly: Coming up Whoa, ooh Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world I got to find my place I currently live in New York.
You're lucky I didn't turn around.
I know.
[Laughter.]
Daly: And later Blake Shelton sinks to new lows.
Don't you wish, since he's dressed like a mime, he would actually sound like a mime? [Laughter.]
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Troy: Oh, give me the beat, boys Daly: Let's meet our next artist, 31-year-old Troy Ramey from Sea Cliff, New York.
Do you come from a household that's musical? I do.
My dad was a musician, and he was in a cover band.
We would do skits and talent shows at the high school that he taught at.
I wish I could be as carefree and wild But I Got cat class and I got cat style [Laughter.]
Troy: My dad had so many different areas in his life that he was passionate about.
If he could've had another reality, he would have been a rock star.
[Chuckles.]
My senior year of high school, we found out that my dad was sick with throat cancer.
He battled for about two years and ultimately passed away in October of 2004.
After my dad passed, I got his guitars and started playing in a band.
The band was called In Like Lions, and actually, you sent us a tweet about four years ago.
You said that you were our new fan.
- Yes.
- [Laughs.]
That was, like, the biggest moment for us.
- We were so pumped about that.
- That's awesome.
Troy: The band played for five years, but I wanted to try to do something on my own.
I'm 32 years old, and I finally realized that this is exactly who I am.
And I need "The Voice" to tell as many people as I possibly can that.
Today, I'm singing Cat Stevens' "Wild World.
" It was a favorite song of my father.
It means a lot to me, and the emotion in his songs is something that I definitely feel like I connect to.
There's a piece of my dad with me whenever I perform.
I think he would be incredibly proud today.
Woman: There he is, there he is.
Let's go, buddy.
Come on, Troy.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la Now that I've lost everything to you You say you wanna start something new - Yes! - How about that, ladies? How about that? Huh? I knew he would I knew he would do that.
- What was that, five seconds?! - Yes! Yes! If you want to leave, take good care Hope you have a lot of nice things to wear And a lot of nice things turn bad out there Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world No! Try to get by just upon a smile If you want to leave, you take good care Hope you have a lot of nice things out there No, no, no, no, no! Just remember, there's a lot of bad everywhere [Cheers and applause.]
Oh, oh Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world Yeah, baby It's hard to get by just upon a smile, girl [Cheers and applause.]
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world Yes! That's awesome! I always remember you like a chi-i-i-i-ld [Cheers and applause.]
Kidding me? - What's your name? - My name is Troy Ramey.
I'm from Woodstock, Vermont, and I'm living in New York now.
Welcome to Team Adam.
[Laughter.]
I think that the excitement from everyone turning around, it was almost like you were indestructible with that really naturally, good, beautiful temperament.
You just absolutely came out here and showed all of us you are a major contender to win this thing.
[Applause.]
Thank you, thank you.
Gwen: What I related to, what woke me up was your intention to the lyric of that song.
It was like it was your song.
That's one thing I always like to try to do when I sing put the things that I've been through in it.
And hopefully that other people can believe it.
And this was one of my dad's favorite songs, so it's an incredible honor to sing it here on this stage 'cause he's not here anymore.
[Applause.]
Well, you really moved me.
Your voice is so tender, and I would love to work with you.
Thank you, thank you.
You have lifetimes in your voice, Troy.
It has all the greats rolled up into it at once.
I think when you hear such classic music and then a voice to match, it's an incredible feat.
And then, you're super cool.
Alicia Keys just called me cool.
Oh, my God.
[Laughter.]
I definitely would love to be your coach.
Thank you.
He turned around first.
My mom won't stop talking about your dimples.
[Laughter.]
Can I meet your mom? [Laughter.]
And Blake Shelton sinks to new lows.
- Come on, Mom.
- Here we go.
[Applause.]
- Watch your step.
- Nice to meet you.
- What's your name? - Sue.
- What is it? - Sue Ramey.
- Sue? Good to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- Wow.
- Oh, my God! I wanted to go ahead and start meeting the family now.
Shameless.
Your son is incredibly talented.
Thank you.
The power of the dimples, man.
- Good to meet you.
- Hi, Mom.
Aww, so much love.
- You just hugged Blake.
- I did.
Oh, my God.
So, Troy, you sing like a man.
[Laughter.]
I'm talking about, like, he, like, picks up rocks just to break 'em in his hand and just blow 'em away like that.
You're absolutely right about that.
Like, that's what you do with your singing.
I love it when I hear a voice like that.
Of course, I love that song.
That's Cat Stevens.
Wow.
You knew a song.
Don't you wish, since he's dressed like a mime, he would actually sound like a mime? [Laughter.]
Wouldn't that be great? Wow.
Wow.
[Laughter.]
He got you.
That was good.
That was good.
Thank you, thank you.
Thank you very much.
[Cheers.]
Anyway, it's really just the strength of your voice.
That's why I wanted to hit my button so quickly 'cause I wanted to see how you perform, also, because I knew you were gonna make it onto this show.
And, by the way, congratulations on four chairs.
Thank you guys so much.
[Cheers and applause.]
We're all gonna gravitate towards your voice because it's special, man.
- I want to be a part of that.
- Thank you so much.
Thank you.
It seems like the kind of music you want to do is the kind of music that's gonna really just touch people.
My instinct tells me that you're supposed to be on my team, and I'm not just saying that as a joke.
It's so weird.
My instinct tells me the same exact thing.
No, no, I'm not joking.
I'm saying you actually moved me today.
I really feel that we should be working together this season.
Who do you pick as your coach? [Dramatic music plays.]
[Audience shouting.]
Troy: I am such a huge fan of all of you, and all of you have influenced me in so many, so many ways.
Please, please.
I've gone through this moment in my head so many times.
[Audience shouting.]
I just have to say I pick Gwen.
[Cheers and applause.]
Oh, my God! Wow! Whoo! What? Come on! Wow.
I'm so happy.
- I feel you.
- [Chuckles.]
Troy, man, I really thought that I had him.
He's got all the right type of personality traits to win this show, but he's also got this incredible voice, too.
Yeah, boy! [Applause.]
I won! Gwen: Troy, he's the real deal, and he lives music and understands how powerful it is and respects it.
Thank you.
That's exciting to me, 'cause I feel the same way.
- Yay! - You guys know who she is? - Oh, yeah, we know who she is.
- Do you know who she is? - Yes, we do.
- Hi.
Daly: Nice job, man.
What was it just about Gwen? I've just been a fan of you for so long.
That was kind of like the first music that I listened to that was outside of my dad's collection.
I think Blake's gonna be mad at me.
[Laughter.]
I think he's gonna get over it.
Adam's gonna be the most bummed.
It's because of you and her.
I feel like his mom loves you, and so he feels, like, connected to this.
I'm telling you, that had something to do with it.
Okay, maybe.
Damn it, I thought I had that guy.
Daly: Put yourself in our coaches' chairs.
Get the "Voice" official app.
Play along now and build your own "Voice" team.
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
I'm feeling the love with with these guys right here.
I love you guys.
- Aww, Adam.
- I never in my life thought that I would be doing this with you three human beings.
- That's true.
That's true.
- This is crazy.
I'm just trying to have the ultimate "Voice" experience.
I'm gonna give all of my experience to these people and try to get back.
It's like an exchange of love.
That's all I care about.
Yes.
- I love it.
- Yes! I would say that Alicia should do that, but she is the worst coach that I have ever seen on this show.
What I know about y'all boys is that every time you say something, you actually mean the opposite.
Adam must love the hell out of me.
- [Laughs.]
- That's true.
I do love you.
[Laughter.]
Daly: Let's meet our next artist.
Okay.
Kick it to Mama.
Good kick.
My name is Ericka Corban.
I'm 31 years old, and I'm from Aberdeen, Washington.
It turned out to be an apple tree.
Right now, I'm a full-time mother of four.
My husband works a lot to make ends meet.
Find Brazil.
He travels all over the state, and while he's away, our days consist of school, making food and cleaning up and playing and doing things that you do when you have four kids.
[Laughs.]
- Two, three.
- Go! I've always felt drawn to music and loved writing, but it was really when my kids were born that I felt like my life is dedicated to them.
That's why I've waited so long to even try something like this.
Mattaniah: It's so cool for the kids to see their mother have her own dreams.
She's inspirational to me, and I'm so proud of her for what she's doing.
Ericka: In Aberdeen, there's not a whole lot of places to play that are suited to my style of music.
For me, to step out and do something like this and overcome my fear is huge.
I chose to do "The Voice" because I guess I just want to know if my voice is worth hearing.
I would love to work with Alicia.
She is an incredible vocalist, but also, she has incredible ideas.
I'm a mom with one last shot, and if [Sniffles.]
Sorry.
[Sighs.]
When I walk through those doors, with all the gratitude in my heart, I'm just gonna give it everything I've got.
[Gasps.]
There's Mama.
Wade in the water, children Wade in the water Wade in the water, children Wade in the water God's gonna trouble the water Who's that young girl dressed in red? Wade in the water Must be the children that Moses led Oh, God's gonna trouble the water Wade in the water Wade in the water Wade Yeah, yeah, yeah God's gonna trouble The wa-a-a-ter-r-r-r-r [Applause.]
- Hello.
- Hi.
What's your name? My name is Ericka Corban.
I looked over at Alicia a couple times.
There were some really awesome vocal decisions that are, like, part of the flow of doing the jazzy thing.
And there were some notes that were so great, and I really got to see, like, a glimpse of your taste.
There were some things control-wise that were making me think too much, but I really thought it was pretty good.
So Thank you.
[Applause.]
Ericka, you're really, really special.
I loved your low register.
Thank you.
Man, I felt like I was a second away the whole time.
And you showed us this beautiful higher register that you have.
I would love to hear you also come back to where you began of that earthiness.
It would have just been a really nice reminder of your dimension.
You have a really, really beautiful voice, and I would just encourage you to keep on swaggin' and singing because you are really unique and special.
Thank you.
[Cheers and applause.]
Nice job.
Alicia: She was really skilled, really talented, but I'm waiting still for the right, right thing, and I'm gonna know it when I hear it.
- Way to go.
- Hi, guys.
Ericka: Even though I didn't get a chair to turn today, taking that risk and being a little bit fearless was really good for me and good for me to show my kids that it's okay to dream big and to try.
She was so sweet.
She's beautiful.
What a beautiful soul.
- Coming up - Every one Whoa! Daly: more shocking moments that surprise our coaches.
Whoa, ooh What?! It was awe-inspiring.
There's one of you on Earth.
- Whoo! - Yeah, yeah This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Okay, right now I'm headed to Westlake Village, California, to sit down with Jack Cassidy, who's trying really hard to make his own name in the music industry.
I'm so happy for you.
Jack: I come from a very musical family, the Cassidy family, also known as the Partridge Family from the famous TV show.
Let me ask you to your face Do you think you love me? My uncles are David and Shaun Cassidy.
They were both teen icons and pop stars.
My dad's name is Patrick Cassidy, and he's done Broadway shows such as "42nd Street," "Aida," "Pirates of Penzance," and my grandma is Shirley Jones, and she was best known for her role on "The Partridge Family" as the mom of America.
An incredible career.
Now you're gonna have an incredible career.
I hope so.
[Laughter.]
In the beginning, I was not very happy with them going into show business, but when I saw him sit down at the piano, I didn't even know he could play the piano.
Then he started to sing.
I thought, "You know what? This is a voice that's really remarkable.
" What was this family like growing up? Jack: Always constant music going on.
It was amazing that my teaching got to be from my family.
Jack: Growing up, everyone was a singer, everyone had their own careers.
It's just been this searching and this struggle to find out who I was.
Worship music kind of became the thing, my niche, you know, where I wanted to be as a musician, as an artist.
From street ministry to Uganda to the Dominican Republic, I just have a heart for people and working with orphans and kids and just people that are hurting on the street and just need someone to love them and help them out.
For my blind audition, I'm singing "One of Us" by Joan Osborne.
This song really hit home for me, and I'm playing the piano with no band.
It's where I started as a worship leader, just singing my heart away.
I love that the coaches don't know my name, they don't know anything about me.
They're just judging me purely on the merit of my voice.
It's an amazing opportunity to really carry on the family legacy.
There he is.
There he is.
Here we go, Alicia.
[Chuckles.]
Come on, Blake.
He looks great.
If God had a name What would it be And would you call it to his face If you were faced with Him in all His glory What would you ask if you had just one question If God had a face What would it look like and would you want to see If seeing meant that you would have to believe In things like heaven and in Jesus and the Saints And all the prophets And yeah, yeah God is great And yeah, yeah, yeah What if God was one of us Just a slob like one of us Just a stranger on the bus Trying to make His way home Yeah! Just tryin' to make His way home Whoo-hoo! [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Adam: What's up? Whoo! I love that you were playing the keys until Alicia Keys turned around.
[Laughter.]
- What's your name? - My name is Jack Cassidy.
I'm 18 years old, and I'm from Westlake Village, California.
There is such an incredible, passionate commitment to every single word that you sing, and I don't think there's something that's more important than that.
There were moments that weren't perfect, but that's what life is like, and that's what singing is like, too.
Like, there's always gonna be imperfections.
That To me, that's what makes somebody great.
What are your influences? Like, what do you listen to? I was raised on Elton John, Billy Joel, the Eagles, Beatles.
Yes! My man.
[Applause.]
If that's the case, then come home, Jack.
[Laughter.]
I can tell already you have so many instincts that are so pure and honest and real and unique, - and it's gonna be awesome.
- Thank you - Hey, Jack.
- How's it going, Blake? I had a vision of you and Alicia Keys, like Okay.
You know those things where they play, like, with two pianos facing each other in, like, a duet, like like Elton John and Billy Joel do.
But if you had Alicia Keys as your coach, you could do that.
I was just thinking.
[Laughter.]
Like, that would be a huge that would be a huge moment.
I feel like there I feel like there are other combinations of instruments that can also take place.
- A huge moment.
- Like Like guitars.
Anyway, congratulations.
I can't wait to hear what Alicia has to say to you right now.
[Laughter.]
It's gonna be good.
[Applause.]
Thank you, Blake.
Thanks, Blake.
I appreciate that love.
This is my first time seeing someone actually choose to play only the piano, just you, which is obviously, you know, totally my heart.
There is nothing like being able to just play the piano and sing what you feel.
But can you tell us a little bit more about how did you get into singing, what's your story? Well, I grew up in a musical family, the Cassidy family.
My grandma's Shirley Jones from "The Partridge Family.
" - Wow.
- What?! - Okay.
- Yeah.
Oh, my God.
[Laughs.]
So, you've been singing since you were, like, 2, 4, 1, born? Since I came in the world, yeah.
Right.
Came out singing.
[Laughs.]
And that particular song was such a beautiful example of what happens when you're able to spread a message and write a song that no one can deny.
I totally felt it, and I do hope that we're able to work together.
Thank you so much.
So, who do you Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
[Laughter.]
Here's what you get with me.
You get someone who really understands you and where you're coming from musically, 'cause I think we probably grew up in a similar way with the same kind of tunes playing in our lives and in our heads.
So don't underestimate that.
I know what you want to do.
- That's good.
- I really do.
[Cheers and applause.]
Jack, who do you pick as your coach? [Dramatic music plays.]
Yeah, Jack! [Audience shouting.]
Adam, I love you, but I pick Alicia.
[Cheers and applause.]
All right! Nice job.
Jack had this incredible, super-ridiculous tone, and I turned around and realized that he was playing a piano, I was ecstatic.
I feel like he was for me.
- I still love you.
- He's dope.
I still love you.
Jack: Adam was selling it, man, and I really felt a connection with him, but Alicia just really understood me, and she really got down to the roots of who I am.
Adam: I only pushed a couple times today.
I did a really good job.
I just wasn't chosen, so I'm a little frustrated, but I'll get there.
- I thought I had him.
- Well, there's there's more.
There's more.
Daly: Coming up You are the number-one priority on Team Adam if you come to me.
Adam fights hard to land his first artist of the night.
This is the whole season.
And later a four-chair turn that our coaches can't believe.
What? - Yeah.
- Whoa.
What?! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Alicia: What do you think you're looking for? I want like a super pop girl that wants to get crazy with her style Rock out.
and just like, "Let me entertain you.
" I'm looking for someone who, like, picks me as their coach.
[Laughter.]
That's my main criteria right now.
It's, like, someone who goes onto my team.
Daly: While our coaches get settled, let's meet our next artist.
My name is Kawan DeBose.
I am from Miami, Florida, and I'm 30.
Y'all really gonna put my age on TV? Ooh! Can I lie? As a kid, I lived in this big house of love with my mother, my grandmother, and my grandpa.
My grandfather was a pastor, and I was about 5 when I started singing in choir.
Everybody was shouting hallelujah and da-da-da-da-da.
I was like, "Okay, I can do this.
" Eventually, I started to play piano, and that's kind of how it all started.
Where I'm from, it's the inner city, and we weren't culturally aware, so my grandmother enrolled me into a performing arts school called Tajiri Arts.
They had dance classes, singing, acting.
It just opened my eyes, and I realized, I can be a singer if I wanted to.
[Humming.]
After high school, I started gigging as a musician full time, corporate events and weddings and jazz festivals.
I opened for Mary J.
Blige and Ludacris, so it was an awesome experience.
I moved to L.
A.
in 2015 to pursue my dreams of songwriting, production, becoming an artist.
I played gigs like the Four Seasons.
[Piano playing.]
I meet some incredible people, but more often than not, no one is really paying attention to what I'm doing.
When I'm not gigging in L.
A.
, I also commute to San Diego to perform at a church.
Dr.
Emmanuel: When I first met Kawan, I saw a little, short guy [Laughs.]
playing the organ and smiling and laughing.
It's very exciting for me to see Kawan get to this point.
As you grow and get larger, I'm going to be your personal manager.
[Laughs.]
Since I was 10, my only job has been music, but the industry is so hard, so it would mean a lot to be coached by people that have been successful.
They really help mold and shape these new artists.
I want to soak up everything I can.
If I turn a chair, it's definitely validation for all the years that I've poured into this, so I'm excited and grateful for that opportunity.
Come on, Kawan.
I'm gonna get the next one for you, Adam.
I've been really tryin', baby Tryin' to hold back this feelin' for so long Whoa! And if you feel like I feel, baby Then come on Whoo, come on Let's get it on Ooh Hey! Ha! Don't you know how sweet and wonderful That life can be Wow! That life can be, ooh Wow.
- Nice, Gwen! - Whoo, yes, yes! To get it on with me Yeah, yeah So, ladies, make some noise! So, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, baby Stop beatin' 'round Hey! [Laughs.]
Whoa, ooh I'm gonna get it on Oh, Alicia! Yeah, yeah I'm gonna get it on 'Cause if you believe in lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ve God bless you! Thank you so much! - Wow! - Thank you so much! [Cheers and applause.]
Thank you so much.
- Yay! - Yay! [Applause.]
Wow.
Wow.
What? Wow, you are so gifted.
- Ahh.
- It was amazing.
I didn't think you were gonna turn around! What?! [Laughter.]
What?! [Laughter.]
What is your name? My name is Kawan DeBose.
I'm thir years old, and I'm from Miami, Florida.
[Laughter.]
And this Can I just say what an absolute pleasure this is? Wow, wow.
[Cheers and applause.]
Wow.
You've rendered me speechless, which is very hard to do.
Thank God.
[Laughter.]
I'm gonna level with you, Kawan, all right, listen.
[Laughter.]
Oh, boy.
It's been a rough go so far this season.
You know, I've been doing this a long time.
There's no one who has been and will always be so picky when it comes to finding the real thing.
The only man that can do the kind of falsetto with the same kind of ease and the same kind of range is Prince.
Woman: Oh.
- Wow.
- Wow.
When you go up top, the way you cascade down, the way you maneuver around, it has that just you want to make that face of, like, uhh, like, that's the best thing ever.
I can't even believe that you can do that.
- Right.
- Thank you.
You are truly one in a billion.
Thank you so much.
[Cheers and applause.]
You are the number-one priority on Team Adam if you come to me.
The number one.
[Cheers and applause.]
- That's true.
- Not number two, number one.
- It's true.
- Hi, Kawan.
Hi, Miss Stefani.
Can you tell me a little bit about how you got to this point and why you're here? My first gig was at a church.
I was 10 years old.
Music has kind of kept me employed ever since, you know.
- Really? - Hotels and restaurants, so I'm just looking to go to the next level.
I was on a crazy journey, as well.
Like, I didn't just suddenly get to this spot right here.
Yeah.
And that's why I think it would be really fun to work together so I can share with you all the different experiences of playing all over the world, and also at this point in my life, like, everything's in color right now for me.
Mm, that's beautiful.
And my purpose feels really focused.
I would love to learn from you, and then you could learn a little bit from me, and we could collaborate, and then we can show the world your gift that God gave you.
Oh, thank you, Miss Stefani.
I appreciate it.
Kawan, your voice is crazy, man.
Pbht! That was outrageous, just sitting back here listening, so I'm excited for you, and I will have to concur with Adam that he has a really special place ready for you right now.
Like, even they will admit, even Gwen and and Blake - The hell I will.
- will admit that there's What are you talking about? I want him on m I want Kawan on my team.
[Laughter.]
Let the woman speak, Blake.
There's nobody like you on Adam's team at all.
That's 'cause there's hardly anybody on his team to begin with.
What are you talking about? - Of course there's not - Don't hear that noise.
Alicia: Because he's very picky.
I'm not disregarding the other coaches, but I just wanted to give you a moment of insight into Adam, 'cause he's dope, too, and so are you.
Love you.
- Killer, man.
Congratulations.
- Thank you so much.
Let me dig out of this hole that Alicia just pushed me in.
[Laughter.]
You just lit this place up.
Thank you.
It is so much fun to watch how much personality you have onstage.
Thank you.
Somebody hands you a microphone and a great song, all your coach has to do is just get out of your way.
That's how I feel about it, man.
You're that far along.
[Laughs.]
That's a compliment.
Thank you, sir.
Thank you.
I'd love to be your coach, dude.
I've done this I've done this for a long time Wait, wait, wait.
You Hey, hold on.
He He dropped something.
I got to make sure he gets this back.
Oh! Wow.
I appreciate it.
[Laughs.]
There you go, man It's all good.
I fixed it for you.
[Laughs.]
Oh, that's cowboy right there.
That's cowboy! [Laughs.]
Man, listen, when I get inspired on this level by someone like you, it's just the coolest feeling.
I've never felt that connection so strong.
- Wow.
- I can do this for you, man.
There's not a doubt in my mind.
Not a doubt in my mind.
Alicia: All right, it's time.
Who do you pick as your coach? You got to go with me, man.
Ugh.
[Audience shouting.]
[Dramatic music playing.]
Whoo! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions, where R&B singer Kawan DeBose is faced with a difficult decision.
Who do you pick as your coach? You got to go with me, man.
Ugh.
Because I've rocked with this dude since "Songs About Jane" [Cheers and applause.]
and because you have one of my favorite keyboard players in your band, - PJ Morton - PJ! - I pick Adam! - Yeah, baby! Come on! Come home! Come home, brother.
[Cheers and applause.]
Yes, Adam! Looking forward to working together.
Thank you.
Get ready for this.
Adam: I finally got an artist.
Kawan made my day today.
The dude is just gifted, and I think it's gonna be a pretty rewarding experience having that guy on my team.
- Congratulations, man.
- Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Blake: Kawan's definitely a great singer and great entertainer.
He's got horrible taste in coaches, but, you know, you can't hold that against somebody.
I think he's gonna be around for a while, no doubt about it.
Whoo! [Laughs.]
I've worked so hard over the years, and to just have this moment happen, it's awesome.
You looked like it was Adam all the way.
His palate is so wide, musically, so he was the perfect choice for me.
Alicia: Kawan had an incredible voice.
I don't think I pressed because I felt I had a voice that was similar.
Thank you for all that you just did for me.
I appreciate it.
Yeah.
That was so I'm so excited.
I appreciate it.
But I was really happy for Adam, 'cause he really he needs it, y'all.
[Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Whoo! Getting it.
Oh, boy.
Well, here we go, here we go.
[Singsong voice.]
Be awesome.
Taylor: Today's a culmination of 10 years of playing shows and just practicing every single day Come on, baby.
and I'm glad that my family can be here to see it.
Come on, Blake, come alive.
Okay, here I come.
[Laughs.]
I'm Taylor Alexander.
I'm 25 years old, and I'm from Flowery Branch, Georgia.
My parents always had Garth Brooks records on when I was a kid and a lot of country music.
I just remember that really rubbing off on me.
I wrote my first song when I was 11.
Those early songs were pretty rough, but I just kept on at it, and when I was a freshman in high school, I joined up with a bunch of my friends, and we started a punk band.
Tim: The punk, screamo phase was not my favorite.
I told him One time, he was singing really high, and I said, "Son, that's just not your voice.
" I think I was just having that rebellious streak, but I started getting kind of bored of it, mostly because I was getting a little bit tired of my parents saying, "Boy, you're gonna ruin your voice if you keep screaming around like that.
" You know.
I started looking back to the people that a lot of the punk bands that I was into were influenced by.
I kept seeing names like Johnny Cash pop up a lot, and so I really rediscovered my love for classic country music in a very roundabout way.
We eventually started playing country music together.
And we started this band called Young America.
We just toured all over the Southeast, played hundreds of shows, and just had the time of our life.
It wasn't just a hobby anymore.
It became, really, a life's calling and an ambition to really work at it like a job.
We're really proud of him because of that.
So after about five years, I decided to move to Nashville.
I had some odd jobs for a little while.
I worked at a venue, swept the floors, and worked a construction job for a summer.
I went from having no gigs at all to having a couple residencies.
I've been doing music professionally for almost 10 years, but it can be really difficult to stick out in Nashville, and I think "The Voice" would really change my life.
Today I'm gonna be singing a '90s pop song for my blind audition.
I think it's a little risky going this far outside of my comfort zone, but I'm really hoping it'll turn a couple heads of people that aren't expecting to hear this song come out of a male country singer.
I've put in my 10,000 hours.
I've practiced every day.
And I'm just gonna walk out there, knowing that I've got something unique to offer the coaches.
Oh, oh, oh No matter how hard I try You keep pushing me aside And I can't break through There's no talkin' to you It's so sad that you're leaving It takes time to believe it But after all is said and done You're gonna be the lonely one Do you believe in life after love? Ohhhhh! I can feel something inside me saying I really don't think you're strong enough Oh, do you believe in life after love? I can feel something inside me saying I really don't think you're strong enough Ohhhh, ohhhh Ooh Do you believe in life after love? I can feel something inside me saying I really don't think you're strong enough Ohhhhh [Cheers and applause.]
Adam: Yeah! - Wow! - Hey, okay.
I got to find out a lot about you right now.
What's your name? My name's Taylor Alexander.
I'm 25 years old, and I'm originally from Flowery Branch, Georgia, but I've been living in Nashville for the past three years.
All right! There you go.
First of all, welcome to my team.
Thank you.
That was the single craziest thing I've ever heard.
And And I figured out that it was a Cher song, like, way before I was supposed to.
Way early.
And I pressed my button 'cause I actually thought, "This dude's really good, and he's doing Cher.
" - I know.
- Like, who does that? - Thank you.
- You are so weird and wonderful.
That means a lot, y'all.
Thank you.
- What What was that? - Taylor, that was awesome.
I love flipping songs like that, too.
Thank you.
I love taking a song that people are used to hearing in one way and sing it a whole different way, so that was really cool.
And I have to say, none of us were as quick as Adam to recognize what song that you took.
I felt like I solved the puzzle, like, on "Wheel of Fortune.
" I was like I was like, "Ah, Cher!" [Laughter.]
Awesome, man.
Congratulations, Taylor.
That's really cool.
I love that mixture.
Thank you very much.
[Cheers and applause.]
Hey, Taylor.
People always look at me when a country singer auditions, and just to be completely honest, when I saw Adam hit his button and you have an opportunity to go there, where there's a wide-open lane, that's the best thing for you.
And I think I know the lane you're in for country music.
The BR549-type thing, so when it's time - More like HRTX490.
- If you If you need If you need the What is that? I don't know what the hell he's talking about.
- Well, he knows.
- I'm with you, man.
Yeah, and so, when it's time, I'm here for both of y'all.
- That's what I'm saying.
- Aww.
The only difference between Well, thank you, thank you.
- Aww.
- Aww, Blake.
Because he didn't know what the hell we're talking about I want to just say that's why I'm letting him know.
I just want to say one It's not like WD40 or the B-52s.
- It's like BR549.
- Okay, cool.
I just want to say, good songs are good songs, good singers are good singers, and there's nothing you could ever do to separate those things.
Like, you can't put anything in a box.
- You can't.
- True.
And I think that's badass and deserves to be rewarded, and you're on my team.
Thank you very much.
Thank y'all.
[Cheers and applause.]
- Yeah, man, awesome, dude.
- Pleasure to meet you, man.
That was so crazy.
I love it, I love it.
Thank you.
Adam: Anyone that's gonna do a traditional country version of Cher's "Believe" gets a turn.
Clearly, anything's possible with that guy.
I'm excited to have Taylor on my team.
- Nice job there, brother.
- Whoo! Taylor: I think I could learn a lot from Adam.
Being around people that do completely different style of music than me and learning from them is gonna be really awesome.
Is there some, like, Dr.
Evil guy back there? They really turn those chairs fast, huh? I like it.
It's like the teacups at Disneyland.
Why can't we make these recliners? - Coming up - I got to find my place Daly: with teams half full, our coaches hold nothing back Wow.
Yeah! I will learn to survive - and things get personal.
- Wow! I'm a big fan of the '90s.
I fell in love with my wife because she's the most '90s person in the world.
She was born in the '90s, wasn't she? Thank you.
Thank you, Blake.
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Let's see if our next artist has what it takes to get our coaches' attention.
Why are you so handsome? I'm Gaby Borromeo, 22 years old.
I'm from Seattle, Washington, and currently live in New York City.
[Vocalizing.]
Being from a Filipino family, we'd always have karaoke.
She was about 3, 4 years old.
It was a party.
It was, like, down in the basement, and then she sang "I Will Survive.
" I mean, it just shocked me.
"How the heck did she know how to sing?" At 9 years old, my parents put me in vocal lessons, and at 12, I started making demos and fell in love with being in the studio.
When I was 15, my sister was living in New York City.
And she sent in my demo to this production company.
They ended up really liking me, and I ended up moving a few months later.
When she moved to New York at 15, I didn't like it.
I kept crying every day, kept calling her like three times a day, but then when I went to New York and see her there, I was so proud.
I was getting my GED online, as well as recording every single day.
At about 16, 17 years old, I met John Legend, and I got to actually work with him.
Even though it didn't work out, I learned a ton from that experience.
For the past six months, I have been waiting on tables, and I was playing the piano after work.
One of the managers comes in, and he's just like, "I would love to hear you sing.
" So I play him an original song that I wrote, and he was just, like, "Wow, you need to do 'The Voice.
'" And I was just like, "I'm gonna do it.
" I have taken a long break from music, and I feel like I'm ready today more so than ever.
This is definitely a fresh start for me, and it's gonna be on my terms.
There she is.
You got this, kid.
Someone once told me That you have to choose What you win or lose You can't have everything And don't you take chances You might feel the pain Don't you love in vain 'Cause love will set you free I could stand by the side And watch this life pass me by So unhappy But safe as could be So what if it hurts me So what if I break down So what if this world just throws me off the edge My feet run out of ground I got to find my place I want to hear my sound Don't care about all the pain in front of me I just want to be happy Whoa.
Ooh, ooh, ooh I don't care about the pain I just want to be happy Ooh, happy Yes! [Cheers and applause.]
- Wow! - Wow! Look at you.
Thank you.
Wow.
Wow.
[Cheers and applause.]
[Laughs.]
- Wow! - What's your name? I'm Gaby Borromeo from Seattle, Washington.
[Cheers and applause.]
Yay, all right! Gaby, I'm very surprised that this was not a four-chair turn, and I think that you can win "The Voice" like no problem.
And, correct me if I'm wrong, but when you started singing, it seemed like you were nervous.
- Just a little.
[Laughs.]
- Just a little.
And then as the song progressed, you came through in a way that just blew my mind.
You are unbelievable, and you belong on my team.
Thank you! Oh, my God.
[Applause.]
Gaby, know that the reason why we didn't turn has nothing to do with the fact that you're not phenomenal and a beautiful, beautiful artist.
Thank you so much.
You're killer.
My favorite color is purple.
I'm feeling you.
Me, too.
That's why I wear it on my head.
- I'm loving it.
- Me, too.
Me, too.
Me, too.
- [Laughs.]
- Tell us about you.
I'm 22.
I currently live in New York.
You're lucky I didn't turn around.
I know.
[Laughter.]
I've actually been pursuing music since 15, and I moved there, I got signed to a production company.
Kind of bounced around from, like, production house to production house.
So I kind of took a small break for a couple years, and that's why I'm here today.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you.
That's amazing.
Gwen: Hi, Gaby.
- You're unbelievably cute.
- Thank you.
[Laughs.]
You have such personality and a gorgeous voice, and I can't wait to see what's gonna happen with you.
Thank you so much.
You came out here, and you ramped it up.
It started out good, and it got even better.
And by the end of it, that was an incredible performance.
Thank you so much.
I don't know how you did it.
Hopefully, I'll get a chance to talk to you about it - so you can teach me, but you - [Laughs.]
Actually, it sounds like you're smiling when you sing.
No matter what it is, I just feel like your personality is gonna come through.
And I feel like you need to have somebody who doesn't have anybody else like you on their team.
And I have a bunch of country singers.
I don't have nobody with purple hair.
[Laughs.]
There's one of you on Earth.
I feel like that.
Absolutely.
And so, either one of us would be lucky to get you.
- Yes.
- He's right.
You You probably can win this thing, and it would be a shame to see somebody screw that up for you like Adam.
[Laughter.]
- Thank you, Blake.
- [Laughs.]
It's what I'm used to.
It's what I've come to expect.
You got signed to a production deal, which production deals are the worst.
Tell me about it.
Because they basically don't have to commit to you, and they "develop you," and then, like, leave you high and dry.
- Just leave you in the dust.
- Exactly.
I understand it.
I've been through it, and I would love nothing more than to help you get to the top of that mountain, because it's exactly what I went through in my life and in my career.
[Applause.]
So I think it makes a lot of sense.
I really do.
Alicia: It is time, Gaby.
Who do you pick as your coach? [Audience shouting.]
Come on.
This is the whole season.
Come on, Gaby! Gaby! [Laughs.]
I just want to say thank you guys for just letting me perform for you today.
It's been an absolute honor.
[Dramatic music plays.]
I pick Team Adam.
Yeah.
[Cheers and applause.]
You picked the right team.
Adam: Gaby amazing.
She's definitely one of the better singers in this competition.
And the way she was singing, it was very controlled, very balanced.
I always have a rough start, and then I win.
'Cause I all I do is win, win, win Blake: Gaby's really good, and she's definitely one that I'm gonna keep my eye on.
Adam's killing it.
You know, it's probably the saddest I've been today.
Gaby: I picked Adam as my coach because his story really resonated with me.
It's so great to see someone who's so successful now and who didn't quit, and I want to use that model for my life.
Hey, if people don't want to, like, have success and win, then they shouldn't pick me.
- Pick you.
- [Laughs.]
Daly: Coming up Hope that's waiting for you Daly: more incredible talent You should know you're beautiful just the way you are Wow.
Daly: and one artist shocks everyone.
- Oh, my God! - Whoa.
- Mnh! - Yeah! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
- You ready? - I'm ready.
- You ready to do this? - I'm ready, ready, ready.
[Laughter.]
My name is Griffin Tucker.
I'm 14 years old, and I'm from Dallas, Texas.
I play drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, piano, mandolin.
I play ukulele.
I've been growing my hair so I can headbang all I want, and I can run across the stage and have it flow in the wind.
Like that.
I started getting drum lessons around when I was 6.
I just felt like I needed to learn instruments.
Where do you have a chance to do music? When I was 8, I got to be in a Beatles cover band, - which was really awesome.
- That's amazing.
After the Beatles band was coming to an end, I got to be in a KISS cover band, being Paul Stanley.
Griffin would play the Paul Stanley part, sing lead on almost every song, but he would also have to play a little bit of the Ace Frehley because the other boys couldn't play the lead guitar part.
- So he was - He was Paul Frehley.
Yeah.
Paul Frehley.
[Laughter.]
Griffin: I'm a regular high school student.
A couple weeks ago, I was worrying about homework assignments and tests, and now I'm worrying about one of the biggest names in music pressing their buttons for me to be on their team.
People keep telling me that I have, like, a really mature voice.
I really think they'll be shocked when they turn around to see me.
Okay, here we go.
Let's do it.
There he is.
There's our boy.
Well, since my baby left me Well, I found a new place to dwell And it's down at the end of lonely street At Heartbreak Hotel Well, I would be I'll be so lonely, baby I'll be so lonely I'll be so lonely I could die And although it's always crowded You still can find some room Where broken-hearted lovers to cry their gloom away Look at Blake! I feel so lonely, baby Come on, Blake.
Come on, Blake.
I been so lonely I been so lonely I could die And now if your baby leaves you And you got a tale to tell Just take a walk down lonely street - Griffin! - To Heartbreak Hotel, baby I been so lonely, baby I been so lonely I been so lonely I could die Whoa, I been so lonely I could die Oh, oh, yeah, yeah [Cheers and applause.]
That's okay.
It's okay.
Ahhhhh! Another little boo-boo.
[Laughter.]
Dang it.
- Wow.
- Whoa.
- What's your name? - My name is Griffin Tucker.
I'm 14 years old, and I'm from Dallas, Texas.
[Cheers and applause.]
How do you get brave enough to walk out here at 14 with a guitar and do an Elvis song? 'Cause that's crazy.
I mean, I would be so scared.
I've just been used to being in front of pretty big crowds.
This is just a step above, and I'm just so glad to be here.
- Oh.
- Wow.
Griffin! [Applause.]
I couldn't even talk to a girl when I was 14 [Laughter.]
let alone sing Elvis in front of millions of people.
So that says something about your personality, which I love.
Just dig deeper into it.
Otherwise, you're unbelievable.
You got like 100 more years to come back here and do it.
- So come do it again, man.
- I will.
- No, promise, promise.
- I promise.
[Applause.]
Blake: You know, I got a special place in my heart for Griffin.
The kid is literally months away from being ready for this.
Good luck to you, Griffin.
I hope he comes back.
- So cool.
Wow.
- Thank you so much.
Gwen: Knowing his age, that would've been a game changer.
We would have all been, "14? Yay!" I want to work with a young girl.
I love thinking back to when I was a little girl, just starting to understand, like, that music defines kind of who you are.
Everybody has something special on this show, but the young ones like that, to see them be so brave.
That's what I'm saying.
It took me, like, my whole life to get comfortable.
I still get nervous.
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Our next artist, 34-year-old Missy Robertson from Sacramento, California, is looking for her big break.
- Today's the day.
- Today is the day.
- It's exciting, yeah.
- Mm-hmm.
Missy: It is crazy going from watching this show with my family for 11 seasons to actually being here.
I am currently an employment specialist.
I help people with disabilities find jobs.
A lot of my clients have heavy disabilities that they're facing, and to see them not give up is very inspirational.
I love what I do, but I have been working to get in the music industry since I was about 17 years old, and to have 90 seconds to be able to sing to the world is an amazing opportunity.
I've spent a long time helping other people find jobs, and today is my day to get my dream job.
I feel competitive.
[Laughs.]
- Yes.
- Yeah.
She just wants to be beautiful She goes unnoticed She knows no limits She craves attention She praises an image She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor There's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark You should know you're beautiful just the way you are And you don't have to change a thing The world could change its heart No scars to your beautiful We're stars, and we're beautiful She don't see her perfect Come on, come on! She don't understand she's worth it That beauty goes deeper than the surface The light that shines withi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-n Oh, and you should know Yeah, yeah You don't have to change a thing Wow.
The world could change its heart No scars to your beautiful We're stars and we're beautifu-u-u-u-u-u-l [Cheers and applause.]
Wow! Wow! Wow, wow, wow.
Wow.
Talk about saved by the bell, man.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow, man.
Like, the last second.
Yeah, that was crazy.
I was asking, like, "How come nobody's pushing their button? Let's push our button.
" [Laughter.]
Your voice is so beautiful.
What's your name? My name is Missy Robertson, and I'm 34 years old from Sacramento, California.
- Wow.
- Yeah.
[Cheers and applause.]
So, where did you That's the capital of California, just so you know a little geography lesson.
Thank you.
Thank you, Blake.
Where did you get this voice? Like, who are you? My dad's a pastor, so I just grew up singing in church every Sunday.
Currently, I work with people who have disabilities.
I help them find jobs, but I also have a band, and my sister and I are in a band together.
- Wow.
- Wow.
- Nice.
- Wow.
What's the band? The band's called The Out Go.
I wanted you to get a plug in for them there.
Can you tell me what made you choose that song? Honestly, it was the message.
To be able to stand even for 90 seconds and tell people that they're beautiful just the way they are, that's what I'm trying to do through my music.
So [Applause.]
Yeah, I totally understand.
Thank you.
If you're given a gift like that, to have a message to spread with it.
That's what I'd love to help you continue to do as your coach if you chose me.
I think that's the most important thing that there ever is.
So it's really amazing to meet you, Missy.
I'm so proud of you already.
Thank you so much.
Alicia Keys is right here next to me, and she's hit her button.
I'm sure that you're going, "What would this country guy have for me?" You're amazing, Blake, I have to say that.
- That's right.
That's right.
- Thank you.
Wow.
Thank you.
You're amazing.
[Applause.]
That's right, Blake Shelton.
Thank you, thank you very much.
- That's a little plug for you.
- Thank you, thank you.
[Laughter.]
'Cause he needs he needs it, he needs it.
I like Missy.
Well, you know what? I want somebody on my team that is not like anybody else on my team.
I know Alicia may seem like the obvious choice.
Why don't you think outside the box a little bit? [Laughter.]
Spoken like a true politician.
Step outside of your comfort zone.
He's literally saying exactly what I always tell country artists.
I want you to know that the person that is over there that's trying to get you on their team How paranoid does that man sound right now? That is the most classic It's the most classic definition of manipulation I could possibly imagine.
It's the most classic definition of paranoia.
[Laughter.]
It is true how he's saying this now.
I actually agree.
There is something really cool about doing the unexpected.
I think there's something really awesome about that.
Either way, you're on the show, so just follow your heart.
- They both want you - Yeah.
and this is a magical moment.
Thank you.
Missy, it's time.
Come on, Missy.
Who do you pick as your coach? Whoa.
[Audience shouting.]
This is so hard.
I really love you both so much.
I pick - Alicia.
- Really? Yeah.
[Audience shouting.]
I pick Alicia.
All right! All right! [Cheers and applause.]
- Whoo! - Whoo! Whoo! I couldn't let that voice go.
Alicia: I was really moved by her, and I can't even wait to see what she brings out.
It's gonna be pretty crazy.
[Cheers and applause.]
Yes! I'm on a losing streak right now, and I don't know why.
I'm really hoping my day picks up.
Good luck to you, sweetie.
Happy for you.
Thank you.
Missy: I didn't think anyone turned around.
Literally, it was the last second.
That was so crazy.
I can't wait to bring up that I'm surprised that they brought you back as a coach 'cause you were such a terrible coach last year.
Getting in your head.
I'm getting in your head.
My head is in-gettable.
Whoa, ooh I'm gonna get it on Daly: You can buy full versions of tonight's blind-audition songs on iTunes.
I'm every woman It's all in me Daly: Or listen to them on Apple Music.
Oh, baby, baby, it's a wild world This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
My name is Aaliyah Rose.
I'm 14 years old, and I'm from Provo, Utah.
I come from a big, blended family.
There's five kids and my mom and dad.
We live with our grandparents because financial issues are a little bit of a struggle.
It's kind of hard because we have nine people in the house plus my dog, but [laughs.]
I'm really happy and proud.
She really has a gift to share with people, and she can touch people's hearts.
It was a gift she was just born with.
- It's definitely not me.
- [Chuckles.]
- Love you.
- Love you, too.
Aaliyah: Growing up, I was always singing around the house with my little fake microphone that I got for Christmas.
I did singing competitions, county fairs, and when I was 10 years old, I wanted to start sharing my music with the world, so my parents started a YouTube channel for me.
This is my first YouTube video, and I'm gonna be doing a cover of Dani and Lizzy "Dancing in the Sky.
" I hope you like it.
I got hundreds of thousands of views on that, like, overnight.
And I was like, "Oh, my goodness.
People actually like to hear me sing.
" So we just started doing more.
I wouldn't even know how to make a YouTube channel.
We didn't really know, either, though.
Is the whole family in on it? Yeah, she films and edits all of my videos, and my grandparents are, like, my number-one fans.
Hey, baby, don't you bring them tears Sometimes I will get a little bit of hate on social media, and my grandma will comment and, like, try to make them stop.
It's She's so funny.
I know you lie My highest viewed video is Meghan Trainor "Lips are Movin'.
" It's at 5 million.
Meghan Trainor posted my video on Twitter, and that was awesome.
What was it like to hear from Meghan Trainor? We started talking back and forth, and she's the sweetest person ever.
I want to show you a little video here.
Hi, Aaliyah.
It's Meghan Trainor, and I heard you're auditioning for "The Voice.
" Best of luck.
I know you're gonna be amazing, though.
Oh, my goodness.
And just be yourself and go get your dreams, girl.
Mwah! I love you so much.
Oh, my goodness.
- How about that? - That is so cool.
Aaliyah: Ever since I started singing, I just knew I just wanted to sing for the rest of my life.
Melanie: She always said, "If there was a show I'd ever go on, it would be 'The Voice, '" and so it's a real-life dream come true.
We're just really proud and happy that we can be all with her and be a part of her journey.
Here she comes.
Aaliyah: For my blind audition, I'm singing "Rise Up" by Andra Day.
This song is a way for me to tell my family that things are going to get better and that there's always hope.
- Time to shine.
- Let's do it.
You're broken down and tired Of living life on a merry-go-round And you can't find a fighter But I see it in you so we gonna walk it out Mo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ve mountains And I'll rise up I'll rise like the day I'll rise up I'll rise unafraid I'll rise up I'll do it a thousand times again We'll rise up High like the waves We'll rise up In spite of the ache Yeah.
We will rise a thousand times again For you For you For you For you [Cheers and applause.]
Hi! Yeah! Yay, yay, yay, yay, yay! Hello! Hello.
- What's your name? - Aaliyah Rose.
I'm 14 years old.
- Wow.
Oh, my gosh! - What?! Yay, I got one! [Laughter.]
- I love you so much.
- You do? Then give me a hug or something.
[Cheers and applause.]
- Aww.
- Aww, 14.
I wanted you.
I'm not sure the world was ready for this much sparkle.
Wow.
Y'all are like twins already.
- It was meant to be.
- So meant to be.
Were you born in like 2002? - Yeah, I was.
- That's so depressing.
[Laughter.]
I'm so happy to hear you're only 14 because I feel like the first half of the performance was crazy, and you're so talented and gifted.
Thank you so much.
I feel like when I turned around, I don't know if you got in your head a little bit, 'cause it started getting just a little less control.
And then at the end, it came back into this, like, beautiful place again.
But just the fact that you have a voice like that and the power like that, and you have so much style.
- I can see that.
- Thank you so much.
I said this morning, what am I looking for? You said that.
I said I want a young, little pop girl that I can just hang out with and share my story with.
[Laughter.]
And, you know I just want to tell you that I do a lot of YouTube covers Okay.
and I covered your song "Make Me Like You" on YouTube.
Wow.
That song's about Blake actually.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
I know.
[Both laugh.]
I did like a little '50s-style video to it.
Yes.
Oh, I want to see it.
Wow.
Alicia: That's cool.
And, Alicia, you've been my inspiration.
"No One" was my first song I ever learned, and "If I Ain't Got You" is the first song I ever performed.
Wow.
Wow, Aaliyah, you are like so incredible Thank you so much.
and your voice is so beautiful.
- Thank you.
- I feel super blessed right now.
I'm so excited to work with you.
- Thank you.
- We're gonna have so much fun.
- Thank you! - Thank you so much.
Gwen: Aaliyah Rose that's who I wanted to get today, and I got her.
[Cheers and applause.]
- You got a little girl.
- I got a little girl! I got a little girl! [Cheers and applause.]
She has an incredible voice, and she's 14 years old.
Oh, my goodness.
Aaliyah: I made it on Team Gwen, and she is one of my biggest inspirations, so I'm real excited to work with her.
[Laughs.]
- Coming up - You just got a four-chair turn.
Mnh! Wait a minute.
So who sings that song? - Duran Duran.
- Duran Duran.
I love both of the Durans.
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Let's meet our final artist of the night, 17-year-old Josh West from Glendale, Arizona.
Josh: I'm trying to fight the nerves.
It is rather strange that I will be onstage in front of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, and Alicia Keys.
It'll be a great opportunity that I could never get where I'm from.
I am in a band with my dad.
I'm the singer and the bass player, and he plays guitar.
It's hard to find places to play around our house, so we drive out here to the Roadhouse.
It's motorbikes.
It's leather.
It's a big stage.
There's no feeling like taking those last few steps right before you walk onstage to give 'em a rock show.
Oh, you can't always get When me and my dad play, we always envision ourselves playing bigger places.
We're usually playing someplace where people are busy eating and talking.
I just want to go someplace where people came to hear me sing.
And that way, I'll know that what I'm giving them is what they want.
I've known since I was born that I wanted to be a professional musician.
I just grew up in that environment.
My father has been teaching guitar for 30 years.
He's been in a number of bands.
I could see his little musical mind working from like, you know, 4 years old.
I was impressed and stunned.
In high school, I was in "Snoopy," "Seussical," "Robin Hood.
" I became comfortable with performing onstage and being in front of an audience.
And there's no chance I'd be where I am without my parents.
My dad taught me everything I know about music.
My mom helped me to graduate early so I could focus on music, and now me and my dad have been working very hard together.
[Singing indistinctly.]
Every day, we write lyrics.
We work on promoting our shows.
It's a full-time job.
"The Voice" gives him a platform for other people to see what we see is so special about him.
[Chuckles.]
[Sniffles.]
For the last year and a half, I've played over 100 shows, probably, and 30 venues.
Today is the first time I'll be playing by myself, without my dad.
Turning a chair would be an amazing feeling for me, and also, it would be great to give that to my parents.
For my blind audition, I'll be singing "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran.
I'm a '90s kid, and this song kind of really showcased where I want to go, with a really profound blend of rock but also a commercial pop viability.
I've only got 90 seconds.
When I walk through those doors He's got this.
I'm gonna rock the stage.
I love this song.
Came in from a rainy Thursday On the avenue Thought I heard you talking softly I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio Still, I can't escape the ghost of you What has happened to it all? Crazy, some are saying Where is the life that I recognize? Gone away I won't cry for yesterday There's an ordinary world Somehow I have to find And as I try to make my way To the ordinary world I will learn to survive Every one Whoa! Oh, all four! All four.
Is my world - Wow! - Yes! [Cheers and applause.]
Wow! That was amazing! Yeah, he did it! Wow.
Mnh! You just got a four-chair turn.
Wow.
What is your name? My name is Josh West.
I'm 17 years old, and I'm from Glendale, Arizona.
First of all, you have the hair I always wanted to have.
[Laughter.]
Super, like, early '90s Eddie Vedder hair.
I get it from my dad.
- Good going, Dad.
- I want some back.
Josh, what a great song, a '90s Duran Duran song.
I'm a big fan of the '90s.
I fell in love with my wife because she's the most '90s person in the world, and I love her for that.
She was born in the '90s, wasn't she? [Laughter.]
She was actually not born in the '90s.
Late '80s.
Oh, okay.
[Laughter.]
Your voice, the coolest thing about it is that it fills the room.
Pearl Jam's one of my favorite bands in the whole world.
Wait a minute.
So who sings that song? - Duran Duran.
- Duran Duran.
If you're that behind, just don't bother at this point.
[Laughter.]
You understand everything I'm telling you, right? My favorite '90s band is Soundgarden.
Yes! Oh, my God, you would kill that.
"Superunknown" is the best album ever.
"Badmotorfinger.
" Are you a "Screaming Life/Fopp" fan? Are we in a record shop right now? What are we doing? [Laughter.]
What the hell's going on in here? It was an awe-inspiring performance, especially the way that your voice was able to climb and climb and climb and still not falter, you know, with strength and with tone and with roundness.
I would just love to sing with you right up in that area, right up there, me and you.
That sounds fun.
There's nobody like you on my team, for sure, and I'd love for you to just singularly be in your own zone, bringing the light.
Thank you very much.
[Applause.]
I also love the '90s.
[Laughter.]
Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire.
Diamond Rio, Brooks and Dunn.
Yeah.
Thanks for y'all's support.
[Laughter.]
I'm also a fan of rock music, and no, it's not what I do, but it's not about what I do as an artist.
It's about what I do as a coach.
I did used to have hair very similar to that, too, by the way.
And all those bands y'all were talkin' about, they're my favorites, too.
Ha! I love both of the Durans.
[Laughter.]
Wow.
Gwen: Hi, Josh.
I'm almost positive that I love your voice more than any of these other coaches.
Debatable.
It's the kind of thing I would listen to outside of this show.
I did hang out in the '90s, as well, so one thing that I could offer you is just advice about being onstage, commanding an audience, how you present yourself.
I want to keep talking 'cause I want you to understand how much I love your voice.
Thank you very much.
[Applause.]
Who's it gonna be, Josh? Come on.
[Audience shouting.]
Come on.
Come on, man.
Come on, Josh! Come on.
I pick Adam! Yeah, that's right! Unh! I'm so pumped, dude.
Come on.
Adam: Josh is so good.
If you could see what I looked like when I was that age It was like talking to a young me.
Josh: I picked Adam because we like the same music.
We both have high voices, and he knows the music business, and he can teach me how to get myself out there.
It's cool to meet someone that you feel like you got so much in common with.
I know where you want to go.
Alicia: That was nice, Adam.
That was nice, dude.
That was a nice addition.
Adam: It was like talking to myself when I was that age, except he's more talented and has better hair.
[Laughs.]
[Laughs.]
