We should get to it.
This is Keith's breakfast.
Everything's bigger in Texas.
As the judges head for the table - San Antonio, welcome.
They can only hope to find talent just as big.
Well, the stage is lit, the cameras are rolling, the judges just about set, so let's get the day started in San Antonio.
First up was returning contestant Vincent Powell.
For him, getting a golden ticket would only fulfill half his dream.
How you been, Vincent? - Trying to be like you, man.
- Come on, now.
- Make it happen.
Make it happen.
There's a song.
I am in love with Mariah Carey.
I used to have Mariah posters all like, all over my room, and I used to be like, "God", "please let me meet Mariah Carey one day.
" And look at it here.
I'm gonna meet her today.
Well, let's go.
Good luck with the audition, Vincent, we'll see you in a minute.
Make it happen.
- Yes, sir.
- - Hi.
- Hello, how are y'all doing? - Good, how you doing? - Hi.
Pretty good, pretty good.
Just happy to be here.
What's your name? - Vincent Powell.
- Vincent.
And what are you gonna sing today? I'm gonna do rock me baby.
Okay.
Rock me, baby rock me all night long said I want you to rock me, baby rock me all night long.
Hello.
Mm.
- Well said I want you to rock me, baby like my back ain't got no bones Well - whoo! - I want you to rock me.
- Uh-huh.
- 'Cause it's something 'bout the way you make me feel.
Oh, yeah.
- Amen, thank you, Jesus.
Good lord.
- Wow.
- How far did you make it last year? To the end of Hollywood week.
So, but, dude, I remembered you, so what happened? I don't know.
I think that you took a big, old sip during my audition and it just made me nervous.
You was like this oh, it wasn't that long! He's lying! It was slow motion.
I promise you, like, if you drink while somebody he goes, "it looked like this.
" - And then he did like this.
- - Wow.
- Like I had a big, old jug of something.
- Yeah.
Yeah, no, he's lying.
Different time.
Randy, you want to take a big sip and tell us what you think? Yeah, yeah, let me take a long sip.
And gargle.
It's gonna be about an hour, I'm just telling you right now, 'cause these Coca-colas are good.
Vincent, I love you, man.
I think you can take what you do and fuse it with what you want to do.
Yes, sir.
And find your own thing.
I mean, that's always the things that break through, someone that fuses just the right elements together, and it comes out.
It's clear that your voice is amazing.
I mean, and it's clear that you brought so much joy to this room.
I could only imagine what a gospel cd from you would do, 'cause your voice is one of those voices that gives people chills.
- Thank you.
You obviously know what you're doing, and you sing like an angel, so you know, I'm not gonna critique other than say - that it was fantastic.
- Yes! - Wow, thank you.
- Vincent is back.
- He's back, he's here to stay.
- The man in glasses.
- Thank you, brother.
All right.
- Whoo! - Here we go! You got it, baby! Nice! Now it's on, now it's on.
Making it happen.
Making it happen.
Hollywood, California, baby.
All right, brother.
Whoo! Mariah, I can't wait to see you in Hollywood.
After the break, stick around, because the talent reaches new heights.
Whoo! Yes! Saddle up and get ready for a good, old Texas showdown.
Trust me, I'm trying to save your lives here.
We're trying to save our futures here.
Randy, no, you know what? You guys were great.
Don't lie to us.
Don't lie to you? You guys were very negative.
We're telling you the truth.
Do you like the truth? And later It's some of the most emotional auditions we've seen in 12 seasons.
I feel like that I can be an inspiration for somebody else.
There are people that have been inspirations for me.
But even if you didn't have that story, I still would've been moved by your voice.
We're looking for a unique, special person, and you fit that bill.
I didn't want to cry now, I'm sorry.
- Do we look hot? - You always look hot.
- Or ballin'? - We're both.
Can I take a picture? Go from end to end.
They are definitely not going to Hollywood.
You got that right.
But hopefully this next duo will be headed that way.
- My name is Derek bassorule.
- I'm David.
- We're from San Antonio, Texas.
When it comes down to it, I'm the better singer.
No.
We're here, the brothers from San Antonio, Texas.
- San Antonio, Texas.
Ready to represent.
We're ready to kill this audition, so, America, I hope you're ready.
Exactly, yeah.
- There's room for both of you.
- Yeah.
- In the competition.
- Hopefully.
Lord willing, we'll see.
Let's get this on.
All right.
Right through the door, guys.
Good luck.
- Thanks a lot.
- Thank you.
you should let me love you let me be the one to give you everything you want and need.
- Whoo! honey, good love and protection make me your selection show you the way love's supposed to be.
- Hey! you should let me - love you, love you, love you.
- Whoo! love you - - Can we vote now? - Yeah, Randy, go.
- Definitely not.
No, no, no, no, no.
- I'm sorry, but it's a no for both of you guys.
Nicki.
Um - It's a no for me too.
- - Dude, the whole thing was terrible.
- Really? - I ju no.
Really? You guys are not ready for anything like this.
- Really? - Really? - Really? Yeah.
Dude, trust me, I'm trying to save your lives here.
Hold that thought.
- We're trying to save our futures here.
- Yeah.
Exactly.
- We're trying to this is what we want.
- Here's the thing.
There's like a basic rule of harmonizing.
Yeah.
Which is stay on pitch so the other person doesn't Can harmonize with you.
Can stay on pitch also.
We understand that.
This isn't a group audition either.
Obviously our styles are different.
It's hard for great singers to do that.
Sorry? No, no, that's true, but, baby, like, in doing that.
We're not a choir.
I hear you You don't have to be a choir to harmonize.
But in doing that, it's part of who you are as a vocalist.
That's all I'm saying.
I mean, I'm not trying to be difficult, I just Yeah, you guys want a chance.
That's my opinion.
I just don't think it's for this competition.
- Well, that's my style.
Oh, I want to be nice to you guys, I want to embrace you.
Help us.
Help us.
Help us.
This is what we really want.
Right, but I'm trying to help you, but you're not letting me talk, so I so I'm gonna pass the mic to the next person.
Nicki, what do you think? We just want a chance.
- Yeah.
- We just want a chance.
- We're really passionate about We're really passionate about it, if we're going against the grain here - You guys, excuse me.
It's because this is what we want.
Excuse me for one second.
Your part of the audition is done.
So, let's take it down a notch and realize that we are trying to help you.
But you guys were very negative.
We're telling you the truth.
Do you like the truth? I - or do you want us to lie to you? - You know what? Randy no, you know what? You guys were great.
You guys were great, but it's a no from us.
- Well, don't lie to us.
David, come on.
Don't I don't lie to you? I'm sorry.
I mean, first of all, you guys, like they said, you didn't do harmony.
It's cool, you could do unison, but at least unison is phrased at the same time in the same key, and there's a togetherness which you guys didn't have.
If you guys ever make it, you're gonna have to really readjust your attitude.
Terrible attitudes.
I think we have really good attitudes.
We had a really positive attitude.
Of course, you're gonna think you're great, you think all of that, but now you're hearing the truth from us and you're saying, "well, no, you guys don't know, we know.
" If you know, why haven't you made it? 'Cause it's a tough business to get into.
We gotta work.
Life gets in the way.
We gotta make money, we gotta it's hard.
Well, good luck, you guys.
- Good luck, guys.
- Take care.
Bye, guys.
- Thank you, Derek.
Thank you, David.
- Well, I mean - Wow.
No.
We can't believe it.
- Wow.
Wow.
- W-o-w.
- Some of the judges were a little rude.
I mean, I'm not gonna say names or anything, but not everyone likes them, and if anything it's their loss.
I mean, they lost two talented individuals.
We're gonna keep singing.
- You'll see us one way or another.
- No hard feelings, it's just that, you know They should understand we just wanted a chance.
They should understand where we're coming from.
You guys didn't see that going as long as it did, did you? They don't wanna be they don't wanna hear.
They thought it was gonna be fun.
- Katie planned that.
They definitely don't - hello, welcome to the world of something.
- Hi, honey.
- Hello.
- How are you? - I am doing great.
How are y'all doing? - What's your name? My name is Savannah vochen.
And where are you from? I'm from here in San Antonio.
What would you like us to know about yourself? Um I'm your next American idol.
- Yay.
That's a good sign.
We love that.
We love that confidence.
You have a five-year-old daughter.
Yes.
You know how to draw raindrops? Yeah.
I've been a struggling parent.
I started off young at 19 years old, so I wasn't ready, but I've learned to be a good mother for my daughter.
There isn't a lot of time to get into singing right now 'cause I do have to take care of my daughter, and then work, but this time American idol is my best bet.
It means the world to me.
This is a door opening for me and my family.
I mean, this is my dream.
This is everything I've ever wanted in life.
So, it's coming true.
I mean, I'm excited.
More excited than anything in the world.
So, what are you gonna sing? - At last.
- Cool.
- At last my love has come along my lonely days are over and life is like a song mm.
- Ooh at last the skies above are blue and my heart was wrapped up in clovers the night I looked at you ooh - thank you.
When she sings to you, what do you see, what do you feel? I see emotion from the heart.
It's like I tell her, sing from the inside, and sing from your heart, and people will listen.
You seem like a real natural performer to me.
That's what I'm liking.
You know what I mean? Thank you.
Yeah, I agree.
I thought you were very strong.
Thank you.
Big voice talent, babe.
- Thank you.
Thank you so much.
- Keith? - You have life in your voice.
I can hear a lot of life going on, like lots of struggles and the highs and lows and triumphs, and I could hear all of it, and there's a lot of empowerment that I loved.
Thank you so much.
Yeah.
Really beautiful.
It sounds so organic.
It doesn't sound forced, it sounds like that's what you were born to do.
- Okay, one, two, three.
- Yes! Thank you! - Welcome to Hollywood! - Oh, my God! - Congratulations! Wow.
Big voice.
I made it to Hollywood! Oh, my God, I'm so excited! - Yeah! Yeah! This means the world to me.
My family's excited, and hopefully America will love me.
Texas is heating up.
We've got more auditions from alamo city coming up after the break.
We're back in Texas, where up till now, things have been pretty harmonious.
Welcome to San Antonio! Okay.
Hopefully, things are going better in the audition room.
And I am telling you.
Uhoh.
Ah, I'm not going you're the best man I'll ever know there's no way I could ever ever know ooh.
Uh, should we vote, Nicki? Yes or no? - No.
- Keith? - No.
- Mariah? - No matter what I say right now, like, I can't be the one that saves the day.
What does that mean? It's a no.
It wasn't I didn't think it was good enough today.
Work it out and come back, man.
We've gone off the rails for a moment here at the train station.
Let's hope cristabel clack has the knack to get us back on track.
My name is cristabel clack, I'm 28 years old, and I'm from right here in San Antonio, Texas, and I am a worship leader.
I have been married for seven years to a wonderful man, and I have three beautiful children.
My husband is my number one supporter.
He's encouraged me to just keep going.
Any time that I' ever tried for any singing competition, he's been right there supporting me.
He kinda levels me out and takes the nerves away, so I'm really happy to be here, and I'm glad he's here with me too.
- Hello.
- Hi.
- Come on in.
What is your name, dear? My name is cristabel.
Cristabel, how old are you? I am 29.
29, so you're just making it.
It's your last shot.
- Yeah, it is.
- Wow, and you're from here, San Antonio? I am from San Antonio.
Born and raised.
Shh.
Don't wanna mess this up, right? Yeah, no.
What happens if she gets through? - He'll probably stay asleep.
- You think he'll sleep right through it? All right, so what are you gonna sing today? I'm gonna sing if I ain't got you by Alicia keys.
All right, do it.
Okay.
Some people look for the fortune and some people live for the fame.
- Hmm.
Some people live for the power yeah, yeah, yeah some people live just to play the game but some people want it all but I don't want nothing at all if it ain't you, baby if I ain't got you, baby some people want diamond rings and some just want everything but everything means nothing if I ain't got you yeah - wow, wow.
- Yeah.
Wow.
Yeah, I loved it.
I love that you put in your own little runs at the end of some of the phrases.
And they were really like they just fell.
- Thank you.
They weren't like, "tada.
" Yeah.
You know.
They were just like like that.
It was beautiful to listen to.
Thank you very much.
To me it's obvious that you're a real singer.
You just sang the song how you felt it.
- Mm.
- I know you, I get you.
I love you.
Nice choices.
'Cause some of those choices you made different from her, and I still enjoyed it.
I may have enjoyed some of those choices even better.
Dude, I love you.
I mean, you're to me what the whole thing is really about with the singing.
One, two, three.
- Yes! - Welcome to Hollywood! - Thank you.
- whoo! Whoo! I told you he wasn't gonna get up.
Congratulations.
Good job.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
I'm going to Hollywood, baby! Whoo! Cristabel catches the 4:15 to California, and looks ready to take on the competition.
But what if you didn't even know you were in the game? - Oh, hey.
- Oh, hey.
- We meet again.
We do.
Last time we met, it was on a football field in the university of Arkansas.
This is hogville! Whoo! - Go, hogs! - My name is Jordan defani.
My wife is Ann defani.
Jordan and Ann defani.
I nominated my wife because singing is truly her passion.
The razorbacks are a big part of who Ann and I are.
She was miss university of Arkansas and we started dating our junior year in college.
And to have Randy Jackson come here to fayetteville to surprise Ann, it just doesn't get much more exciting than that.
What's going on, Arkansas? Yeah! Listen.
Your lovely, talented husband Jordan nominated you.
Thank you.
And congratulations.
Congratulations.
You got to thank your husband right here.
He's a cool dude.
Jordan.
Jordan rocks, everybody.
Thank you, Arkansas.
Good luck tonight! - Thank you, baby.
- So what are you gonna sing for us today? - Stronger by faith hill.
- Go for it.
- This is the window to my heart I just want us to be free there ain't no freedom where we are ain't no wishes in these stars ain't no reason to believe so cry for me, baby and I'll cry for you and we'll both break down and we'll both break through we both will be stronger we both will be stronger.
Hmm.
Pretty tone.
You got a pretty tone.
- Thank you.
A lot of faith in there.
Do you think? I hope you feel the passion.
Yeah, I mean a lot of -- I believe he meant "hill.
" - He meant hill.
- Oh.
- Meant hill.
- Oh.
God.
- Well, both, really.
- I'm joking.
I'm sorry.
- Didn't realize.
I liked it.
- Well, thank you.
- Do you want to be a country singer? - I love country.
The steel guitar and the tight harmonies and the stories Mmhmm.
That they tell, the songs tell.
But I also think I could cross over into pop as well.
Right, but I loved that you have a place where you're starting 'cause that's such a it's a nice to have an anchor.
I think it's kind of cute that your husband nominated you.
That he believes in you.
And you're ready to have months - at a time away from him? - Absolutely.
We're a team.
- I love her.
I'm telling you.
- That's the spirit.
- We are a team.
We're a team.
I'm here today because of him.
Well, I liked you when I saw you and I still like you.
And I think that it speaks volumes that your husband and here he is.
Come on in, dude.
Come on out.
I also like that you have no nerves.
- Oh, good.
To me, she's, like, sitting here, like, you know.
When I saw him come back behind the stage, I was like Ahh - aw.
- That's so sweet.
- This is like a great American love story.
- She's a catch, so I had to build up some boldness.
- There you go.
Well, let's take a vote.
Let's see what's gonna happen here.
Uhoh.
- What do you think? - Nicki, yes or no? - - Uh Yes.
- Keith urban.
- It's a yes for me.
- Mariah? - Yeah.
Sure.
I said it once.
I'll say it again.
Yes! Welcome to Hollywood! Now that's love.
That's love.
That's a video.
That's the video.
That's sweet, you guys.
That's gonna make me cry.
- This way.
- Congrats, guys.
- Bye.
That's so cute.
The fact that she wouldn't have even been in the show if her husband didn't.
Yeah.
- Like, wow.
- Totally.
That's right.
Hollywood, here I come.
This little arkansan is coming your way.

It's day two in San Antonio, where local music brings joy to every passerby.
Viva Mexico viva - viva America.
- Viva - and along the river walk, we may have met our next rising star.
Meet Victoria acosta.
Well, I actually started singing mariachi when I was six years old.
My parents wanted me to be involved more with my culture.
So they got me into an all-girl mariachi group.
And we started performing, and I just fell in love with music and seeing people smile.
baila, baila esta cumbia mueve Sometimes I'll perform on the river walk, you know, just to greet everyone to San Antonio and you know, get them involved in the culture and to see, hey, you know, this is a modern city, but we still connect to our historical roots.
Hey - what are you gonna sing today? - I'm gonna be singing big girls don't cry by Fergie.
All right, do it.
Like a little schoolmate in the school yard we'll play Jacks and uno cards I'll be your best friend and you'll be mine Valentine I hope you know I hope you know that this has nothing to do with you it's personal myself and I we got some straightening out to do and I'm gonna miss you like a child misses their blanket but I best get a move on with my life it's time to be a big girl now and big girls don cry.
All right.
Cool.
- Yeah.
- Thank you.
- I liked it.
I kept waiting for, like, one more thing.
And I can't quite put my finger on what that was.
So I found myself a bit disconnected.
- And it's a very dynamic song.
- Sing me a little bit mariachi.
Just a little bit.
- Yeah.
- - Okay, the reason I wanted you to do that - That was fantastic.
'Cause you see? - You see the connection you had there? - Yes.
That's the connection you need to have in the Fergie song.
It's just organic.
- Totally.
- I like this girl.
Let's take a vote.
Mariah, yes or no? It's a yes for me.
Nicki? - Yes, yes, yes.
Love her.
- Yes.
- Randy? Yes.
Welcome to Hollywood! - Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Thank you.
Getting this golden ticket means I get to represent San Antonio and I'm just so happy.
I'm really excited to go to Hollywood.
As soon as she sang that song, transformed.
I knew it.
As soon as she did her thing.
Fantastic.
It changed from a different place in her heart.
Victoria will bring some of her hometown's colorful traditions to Hollywood.
But San Antonio also has a very dark and dangerous past.
It seems that outlaws once ruled these streets.
And when a group of bandits showed up to audition, our judges were in for an old-fashioned Texas showdown.
All I could do was cry I was losing the girl that I loved - eek.
'Cause baby you're a firework come on show 'em what you're worth make them go ah, ah, ah Listen listen I am alone at a crossroad I'm not at home in my own home and I've tried and tried to say what's on my mind.
These people, I can't There's always autotune.
Maybe the next contestant can sweeten up our judges.
What's your name? Papa peachez.
- Papa peachez.
- Yeah.
- How did you get that name? I work with homeless people in Jackson, Mississippi, and peachez was my nickname.
And when I started singing, papa peachez was birthed.
Most people look at me and they see a cute little white boy.
And I am so much more than that.
I'm really just a big black woman trapped in a little boy's body.
My voice has a lot of black gospel influence.
A lot of soul influence from Mississippi.
So it's really different.
I'm a huge dancer.
It's one of my daily rituals.
I usually open all the doors to my car if I go out and find an empty parking lot and dance around my car.
My music is different.
I don't like doing covers.
I hope they like me.
Hi.
How are you? I am fabulous.
Oh, my God.
I love you.
I'm papa peachez.
And today - you what? - Who? - I'm papa peachez.
- Papa peachez.
- Papa don't peach - Papa don't peach? Papa stop peaching.
That is good.
- Where are you from, papa? - M-I 'sippi born and bred - yeah.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
You're working it already, I see.
What are you gonna sing? - I'm gonna sing my own music.
- Okay.
Let's hear it.
I'm a gypsy on the rise I'm a woman in disguise don't you know papa peachez don't lie you gonna feel my heart inside - hmm.
- Jackson town hey-o, oh, oh Jackson town hey, oh peachez is what peachez does broke- every day I may be gay but that's okay God sure ain't one man sing all over the world say hey I'm a gypsy on the rise don't you know papa peachez n't lie - wow.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
- Wow.
Peachez, I think that you are a superstar.
Thank you so much.
Loved the song.
Loved that you wrote it.
Loved that it was something that only papa peachez could sing.
For me, maybe the it's very theatrical.
And maybe so much so that I can't quite find you in it.
Uhhuh.
- That's just me.
I see you as, like, being a quirky kind of artist who has your own super quirky.
That's why I was really excited that Nicki minaj was on the show.
- Well, there you go.
Aww, nice.
So that's my opinion.
Dude, if you could really get serious about it and add some serious vocal lessons, you actually could really have something.
Let's vote.
I'll start.
A billion-sesillion Yes.
- I'm gonna say no.
It's a no for me too, man.
I'm telling you, another year.
Get some more experience He's the most special person we've had today.
- And come back.
He's the most special artist.
But vocally, he's not.
That's the problem.
But his voice was unique and different.
And he was good.
I'm telling you, you get some work, dude, trust me, you could be really dangerous.
But it's a no for me.
- Are we watching the same thing? - Mariah? Ooh.
I'm gonna say yes.
It's a small yes.
- Thank you.
- So two yeses to two nos.
- In this city, Randy Jackson is the tie-breaker.
Now he's heard me plead for you.
He's heard my passionate cry - Nicki's crying.
- For this unique artist.
America, please.
Please, I can I can bring I can bring what you're talking about.
Randy.
I change my vote.
You're through to Hollywood! - Yay! - Thank you! - Oh! Oh! Oh! Yes.
Thank you.
- Papa peachez.
I like papa peachez.
- Papa peachez.
- Yeah, peachez was definitely a papa.
Ah! This is really stressful.
I feel like I got a I'm papa peachez, and, Nicki minaj, I won't let you down! I'm the next American idol! My name is sanni m'mairura.
I'm 16 years old, and I'm from pearland, Texas.
You want to go first? My mom comes from Tanzania, and my dad comes from Kenya.
They moved over here, and that's where they met in college.
And here I am.
I want to be a singer and also teach dance classes because I'm a choreographer.
I joined this group at my church.
It's called the noise.
And it's basically a song and dance group.
We go around performing, doing outreaches, and ministering.
My dream is to become not only a performer but it's also to become a great role model.
I'm going in there with the mentality of getting that golden ticket and getting on that plane to Hollywood.
I already packed anyway.
No, I'm kidding.
Hey, hey.
Aw, yeah.
- Hey.
- What's up? - How you doing? - He's in.
He's in.
- You guys are amazing.
- Thank you.
So are you.
Hey, tell me a bit about your family.
Um, my mom is from Tanzania, and my dad's from Kenya.
So do you speak any other languages or anything? That means, "yes, I speak".
"Swahili.
" In Swahili? Mm-hmm.
Your boy has incredible presence, doesn't he? He does.
- He's got a confident vibe about him.
- Yes, he does.
Is he a good brother? I am a very good brother.
You're a very good brother? - - Yeah.
- And what are you gonna sing today? Today, I'm going to sing who's lovin' you by Michael Jackson.
Okay.
All right.
when I had you I treated you bad and wrong, my dear and girl, since since you went away don't you know I sit around with my head hanging down and I wonder who's loving you.
All right.
- Ah, cute.
Nicki, what'd you think? Candy canes, strawberries, whip cream, rainbows, and sunny skies.
- Thank you.
- Perfect response.
You know what? Your runs were pretty.
All your rifts ended right.
I mean, and I wasn't expecting it.
You really, really had a great, - wellorchestrated audition.
- Thank you so much.
- Yeah.
What I love is that you weren't trying to sound just like Michael.
- Yes.
- Right.
- You're fresh, man.
I like it, I like it.
Thank you so much.
Man, I did too.
I loved your balance of confidence and humility.
Yes.
That's a beautiful thing.
That's inspiring.
And you had two runs in the middle that were so stellar, I was, like, "oh, well, that's it.
" And you sold me in the middle, which is fantastic.
Did his own thing with it.
- Yeah.
- Whew.
- What you say, Randy? - Yes! - Mariah? - Yeah.
- Nicki minaj? - Yes! - It's a yes for me too.

And all day, he's been waiting for one thing.
A little bit of emotion here too in the room.
You all right, my man? You good? You not good? Well, tell me what you're feeling? What are you feeling? I'm excited.
I finally get to meet Mariah Carey hopefully in the judging room.
- Adam, your dream is about to come true.
- Uh-oh.
- Oh.
- Uh-oh.
- Hey.
- Hi.
- Come on in.
- Trying to find my mark.
- What's your name? - Adam Sanders.
- How old are you? What kind of artist would you be if you make it? I'd like to go towards an R&B, soul, maybe a little bit of pop in there, you know.
- What are you singing? - I'd rather go blind by etta James.
So if you got a record deal tomorrow, that's what you would kind of record, etta yeah, you know, I'd like to keep the kind of soul thing going.
I like to bring back, you know, what they had, what Mariah has, you know.
Oh.
- That's sweet of you to say.
I don't know if you saw me crying earlier.
- Thank you.
I'm holding it back right now.
Well, etta James is a long time before me.
- Yeah, yeah.
- So etta James I love that.
I love the compliment, but You have that thing inside of you, you know.
You got the real soul.

, don't disappoint me.
I gotta walk these streets.
After some last-minute touches, our contestants are ready to go.
- Did we get that? - But it seems like we're missing something.
Two of our judges aren't here, Keith.
- There's been some budget cutbacks.
- I think they may be lost at sea.
- Is that metaphorical? Whoaho-ho! What the boys don't know is Mariah is stuck in L.
A.
traffic.
And Nicki had a prior commitment at the American music awards Giving Mariah a head start.
Here we go! Come on! Et cetera, et cetera.
So it looks like it's going to be the boys club for now.
Just the three of us - Yes.

I'm sorry, but this is, like, this hideous L.
A.
traffic.
We don't have this in Manhattan.
- Hi, babe.
Do you want me to be in here? - You're gonna be in the middle.
I made it.
Sorry, but when you want a diva, baby, you've gotta pay the price sometimes.
Sorry.
They say that in order to achieve stardom, you've gotta start somewhere.
And in one person's case, that magical spot was the bathroom.
Let's try to do this, all right? You can do this, you can do this.
Hello, judges.
- Hi.
- Hey.
- Hello.
How are you? - Good.
How you doing? - Great.
Awesome.
What's your name? My name is Brian Martinez.
I'm 21 years old.
Rarin' to go.
Do you sing in a band or out professionally? I was singing in the restroom and a producer heard me.
"And he heard me singing in the restroom, and he told me, "why not audition for American idol? You know, follow your dreams.
You know, you're young, give it a shot.
" All right.
So the places you can audition are online, at a bus, and in a restroom.
Yeah, that's the way to getting big, Keith.
The restroom's gonna give you some good reverb, at least.
I think so.
Yeah.
And he didn't mention any other show, just idol in the bathroom? He said idol.
It came out of his mouth, so Um, what song are you gonna sing? Give me a beat.
- - Just take a second.
Um What song are you gonna sing tonight? I'm singing Phil Collins's you'll be in my heart.
Okay.
For one so small she seems so strong my eyes will hold you keep you safe and warm this hold between us can't be broken I will be here don't you cry.
All right.
That bathroom has killer acoustics.
- Bathroom's crazy.
What'd you think, Randy? Uh, was the producer that heard you, was he a music producer? Uh, he he told he told me that he does music.
What was his name? Do you remember? Um, his name was John.
Honestly, I don't remember.
It was months ago.
- Just John.
That's where he was.
- Yeah.
- Uh, it's a no for me.
Hit it, Randy.
Not good, dude.
Mariah? - I'm sorry, it's a no for me.
- Sorry, but thank you, man.
- Thank you.
- Thank you so much.
- Thank you, brother.
- Thanks, man.
- Bye, sweetie.
- Aww, nice guy, man.
Serious too.
How you doing? Here he comes.
No? - It's okay.
This wasn't a good experience for me.
- Coming up - Yeah.
- A tidal wave of talent hits long beach - It all worked for me.
- Well, you've just got natural talent.
- Including one audition that will leave you absolutely speechless.
They said once it healed that this is pretty much what I was stuck with.
It's 1 in 100,000 it happens to.
Whoo! This, today, is your moment.
- That boat is black and white and red.
- Yeah.
Do you know what that boat's called? - Yeah.
What's it called? - I don't know.
- The queen Mary.
- The queen Mary.
- The queen Mary.
- Queen Mary.
Thisy name's Matt farmer.
S my daughter cadence.
I'm 26, and we're from Phoenix, Arizona.
- Don't be nervous, daddy.
- Okay.
All right.
- Let's do it.
Let's do it.
You want to pound it? Perfect.
Now, there was a time, a little while back, when you were told that this wouldn't be possible, that you couldn't have kids.
Yeah.
Can you tell me about that? Um, I served overseas.
We were on a mission in ramadi, Iraq, and we came across an ied, and the ied exploded.
I just remember waking up in the hospital in Kuwait.
I was diagnosed with traumatic brain injury.
It's when your brain goes through, like, a severe concussion.
The medication that they gave me was supposed to make me be sterile, and 61/2 months later, I found out that her mom was pregnant with her.
So I'm here because I know I "want her to look back in 15, 20 years and say, "my dad never stopped.
He gave it everything he had.
" And it's to make a better life for her.
she saved my life.
She saved my life by coming into this world, and I'm convinced of that.
- Aww! - Sheer cuteness.
- Cuteness.
And how 'bout the girl? She is just adorable too.
- Thanks for that.
- Hi.
- Hi.
What's your name? My name is Matt farmer, and this is my daughter cadence.
- How old's cadence? - Cadence turned three in September.
- Oh, my goodness.
- What a cutie.
- Very sweet.
You've got a lot of tattoos on that side there.
Can you tell me a bit about that? Yeah, I was in the military for six years.
Wow.
So this is basically a memorial tribute to all of my friends that passed away overseas.
Oh, my goodness.
So it's a big day to be here, especially with her.
Yeah.
Well, bless you, man.
Appreciate your service, dude.
Thank you so much, man.
Appreciate it.
Does cadence love your singing? Yeah.
She's, like, my biggest fan.
You like when I sing? Yeah, I get that reaction from my fans too.
What are you gonna sing today? Uh, Sam Cooke's change is gonna come.
- Okay.
- It's been a long long time coming but I know change gonna come oh, yes, it is, baby it's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die.
Mmhmm.
But I know what's out there beyond the sky it's been a long long time coming but I know change gonna come oh, yes it is, baby.
Yeah.
Cadence loved it.
Thanks, man.
Wow.
Randy? I like your voice.
You got strong pipes, dude.
- Thanks, man.
Appreciate it.
- Wow.
- You definitely have strong pipes.
I thought there were certain moments that were just so raw and real and beautiful and heartfelt.
And I loved it.
You know, I loved that about your performance, yeah.
Thank you so much.
Appreciate it.
Yeah, there were some safe choices, I think, but I loved the thick tone that kind of Gavin degraw-esque thick thing you got at the back of your voice.
I love that a lot.
Thank you.
And your duet partner's just to die for, so - Yes.
- So, Randy, what do you say? - Yes.
- Mariah? - I say yes.
- I say absolutely.
We made it.
We made it.
Now we want cadence on TV.
- Cadence.
Come on, cadence.
- Hey! - This ticket means a better future for my daughter and for my family.
And we're just so excited for this next step in our life.
Pound it.
There it is.
Gotta have that.
They liked the potential there.
Absolutely.
So it's all good news.
Huh, cadence? All good news.
Congratulations.
- Thank you so much.
We'll see you in Hollywood.
- Yeah, I'm going to Hollywood! - Mwah! With a trip to Hollywood in the bag, Matt is living life to the fullest.
Something Stephanie sanson knows all about.
Look at- - I'm in a band with my sister called you only live once, and all my band is here today to support me with this audition.
I know I don't have the typical American idol look, but I think that I could bring something different to the show.
And as Nicki battles crosstown traffic, our other three judges are full steam ahead.
- Hi, baby.
What's your name? - My name is Stephanie sanson.
All right.
And what are you gonna sing tonight? I'm gonna sing Adele, I set fire to the rain.
Okay.
Oh.
I set fire to the rain watched it pour as I touched your face well, it burned while I cried 'cause I heard it screaming out your name.
Whoo.
Keep going that way.
- Your name.
- Keep going that way.
- She hasn't finished yet.
I set fire to the rain Keep going that way.
Yeah.
Yes.
You only live once! I don't give a ! You guys, uh, having a problem? Okay, I need to get my pastor on the phone.
- Okay, so we'll start with Randy.
- Yeah.
- Randy, what'd you think? - No! Ever! - Mariah? I thought the smoothness of the tone was magnificent.
Just something it's a little reserved for me.
That woke everybody up.
All right, now we're ready.
This is the first time I've heard a screamer rendition of.
Adele.
But I just want you to know that she plays piano and loves ballet.
- Of course.
Nicki would have sent her to.
Hollywood.
And speaking of miss minaj, she's wrapped up her rehearsals and is ready to start the show.
What it is? - Hey.
- Hey.
- Yeah Oh.
Something tells me we're in for smooth seas ahead.
And I think I know why.
Wish me luck, for I am a good leader, and I am a captain.
- Hello.
- Aye aye, captain.
- How you doing? - Ahoy.
She's come up from "c" deck.
So what brings you here to this lovely Ship? - Well, I am the captain.
Randy howell III here.
Yeah, Randy howell.
Randy howell is the true captain.
Okay, I'm sorry.
What are you gonna sing today, darling? Well, today I'm gonna be singing settle down by kimbra.
- Okay.
- Boom boom boom bye boom boom boom bye bye bye boom boom boom bye boom boom boom bye I want to settle down I want to settle down won't you settle down with me settle down - oh, no.
- We could settle at a table a tab should I stop? I think we might have to get gone.
We're sinking! We're sinking! Ah.
- Wow.
- Because she's not at the helm.
We've run aground.
- What's going on? That was fantastic too.
It sounds like some type of warning.
We gotta get gone.
Hit the dirt.
I think this is a fire alarm.
We literally have to get up and start to walk out.
Okay.
Come on, hit the dirt.
That's what I tried to tell you.
- This will be the wildest audition ever.
- What is going on? - Are you serious? We have to go? - Yeah, we have to go, right? - I think we're heading out.
- They're kicking us out of here.
- Fire alarm? - Should I stay here or should I? - I think you have to go too.
- Whose idea was it to be on a boat? I hope I get to sing again.
It was not her fault.
Come on, let's go! I don't want to go down with the ship.
If you were on the bus, this wouldn't have happened.
Listen to security, Randy.
It's 2:00 P.
M.
, and the fire alarm is still ringing.
Apparently, out on the veranda, outside of one of the restaurants, they a car got a little smoky outside so can we officially let our contestants and judges back in the room? Yes.
All right.
Guess what.
You get to keep going.
- Yay.
- All right? Everybody back in, Randy.
With our judges safely back in their seats, josiah is ready to take the helm once again.
Let's bring you back in.
We apologize that they were making Randy's lunch, and it caught on fire.
Oh, yeah, it was me, the fire alarm.
So I'm gonna be singing settle down, by kimbra.
Okay.
I wanna settle down I wanna settle down won't you settle down with me settle down we could settle at a table a table for two won't you wine and dine with me settle down 'cause I'm like boom boom - Wow.
Wow.
Good lord.
I loved it within seconds of you starting.
I loved it.
That's all I can say.
Uh, loved it, loved it, I loved it.
We're sharing this nautical thing on the queen Mary today.
You are really, really talented for 16.
Thank you.
That's a tough song to sing.
All that with all that rhythm in it.
Very strong.
- Thank you so much.
I actually liked what you did a lot.
I thought it was interesting.
Thank you so much.
Yeah, I thought you had a very mature confidence.
The voice was really defined.
Thank you.
It was very shocking for me.
Kudos.
- Mm.
- Shall we vote? - Yes! - Welcome to Hollywood! - Thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
- Yeah.
- Go, go get your ticket.
- All right! - Yeah! Look at I got the golden ticket! You were on fire today.
Oh, I was on fire.
I guess it just the boat couldn't handle me since I am the captain and whatnot.
Josiah just may become the next big icon.
But that's nothing compared to the legend of the queen Mary.
They say the ship is haunted.
So we're deep now, underneath the decks in the bowels of the boat.
- Hello, sir.
- .
Do you see a guy running behind the pool or is that just me? Hello? They say you can hear voices down here if you're very, very quiet.
- See? - - What'd I tell As scary as it is in thelo h of the ship, that's nothing compared to the horrors unfolding in the judging room.
I'd catch a grenade for ya I'd jump in front of a train for ya you know I'd do anything for ya.
It's unusual.
Suddenly I see this is what I wanna be.
- Suddenly I see sorry.
- It left me in a bad way.
I had a little indigestion while you were singing that just.
That was probably your breakfast burrito.
Yeah.
Pretty woman walkin' down the street pretty woman I don't believe you you're not the truth.
Oh, yeah.
I was just getting into that.
I'm gonna say no.
- Randy, what'd you think? - No! Never! - But back in the holding room, the last contestant of the day may be the strongest spirit of all.
My name is Micah johnston, and I'm the next American idol.
I've loved to sing ever since I came out of my mom.
My mom would be at church, and she said that the music would start and her stomach would start moving while.
I was inside, so I've loved music all my life.
I recently got my tonsils removed, and the doctor that did my tonsils hit some nerves and left me talking with a speech impediment.
When they were taking out my tonsils, it's normally supposed to be like a 45-minute procedure, and they told me that it took about an hour and a half to actually pull out my tonsils 'cause they were so big, so that was where hitting the nerves came into play.
It's 1 in 100,000 it happens to.
I go to a speech therapist, and it's been helping.
If I got a golden ticket, it would bring a smile to my face, and it would just prove to me that despite the obstacles I can still do anything.
I've actually had nerve damage myself, and I thought it was never gonna go away.
It was in my arm.
And I'm just wondering, did they give you hope about it going away? They said once it healed that this was pretty much what I was stuck with.
I do go see a speech therapist, so it's been helping.
So, can you sing? Should you be here singing now? I feel like that I can be an inspiration for somebody else.
There are people that have been inspirations for me.
So, why give up? Exactly.
What are you gonna sing tonight? I'm gonna sing chicken fried by the Zac brown band.
- Hey, hello, hello.
We know that song.
- Great song.
- Let's hear it.
- All right.
Well I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia pine and that's home you know sweet tea, pecan pie and homemade wine where the peaches grow and my house it ain't much to talk about but it's filled with love and grown in Southern ground.
Yeah.
And a little bit of chicken fried a cold beer on a Friday night a pair of jeans that fit just right and the radio up I like to see the sunrise see the love in my woman's eyes feel the touch of a precious child and know a mother's love.
Yeah! - Whoo! - Wow.
Wow.
- Good lord! - Wow.
I mean This is the biggest fake out I think I've ever had.
That's amazing.
Dude, we were leaning in 'cause we couldn't even hear you speak, and then you open up your mouth and you sing like a bird.
What is going on here? Just sing all the time.
I mean, what? As soon as you start singing, you transform into like a beautiful voice.
Absolutely, without a doubt in my opinion, ready for the competition.
- Thank you.
Gosh, it was beautiful.
It was your spirit, it was you there, and I was moved by your story, but even if you didn't have that story, I still would've been moved by your voice and the fact that you put it all into that song.
And a little bit of chicken fried.
- Yeah, a little chicken fried doing Zac.
- Little bit of soul food.
I haven't eaten all day, so I'm really hungry.
- Exactly.
So, should we vote? - Absolutely.
- Okay.
One, two, three.
- Yes! - Absolutely.
- Whoo! - Yes! Welcome to Hollywood! - Yay! - Last one of the day in L.
A.
long beach.
- Congrats, Micah.
- Congrats, Micah! - Show and prove in Hollywood.
- Yes.
- Wow, that was crazy.
Who would think - that was awesome.
- Micah.
There it is, man.
Hey, good job.
Congratulations.
Life as I know it is gonna be different, and it feels really, really good.
Stop making a fool outta me why don't you come on over Valerie I'm ten years old, and I'm gonna be the next American idol in five more years.
And the beauty of it is she just might be right.
But for the day two contestants waiting aboard the queen Mary, the time is now.
- Hi, Nicki.

Thank you.
I thought you sound like someone that's already established, because you didn't try to do too much, but it was a beautiful, beautiful tone, and you had control.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
I am glad that there's someone who already understands who they are and what type of artist they want to be.
And that's great.
That's who you are.
I mean, it emanates from you.
- She's so happy right now.
- I'm so happy.
- I love her.
- I do too.
- This gorgeous smile on your face Like a Disney character.
And just you're making me happy, making me feel good to be a part of this moment.
And I'm just enjoying you as an entity.
- She has to be the happiest contestant - Yes.
I think I've ever met.
If we give out the "happiest" award, it's her.
- Yeah.
- It's her.
- Yeah.
- That's infectious.

- Kimberly, you did it! - I'm going to Hollywood! - Congratulations! Hi.
You got it.
- Whoo! - You put a smile on their face.
They lifted my spirit too.
I think that if we all said no she'd still be the same.
- " I know.
- Yeah, she'd be nice.
- She'd just go, "that's fine, that's fine.
" As Rachel breathes a sigh of relief, our next contestant waits backstage on pins and needles.
I'm really excited.
And nervous, but excited.
Let's go, let's go.
Hi.
- Hi.
- Hello.
- What is your name, and where are you from? My name is Briana oakley, and I'm from antioch, California.
- How old are you? - I'm 16 years old.
- So you're still in school.
- Yeah.
- So, what goes on, like, in school? - It was tough.
I was bullied severely.
- Wow.
I was on a TV show, featured as one of the most talented kids.
Singing at last, Briana oakley.
It was incredible.
But when I came back to school, it was it was horrible.
My friends, they turned on me, and I was I was bullied severely.
It was bad.
Did you really go into the bathroom and eat your lunch? Yeah, I couldn't eat in the cafeteria.
I had to eat either in the bathroom or with a teacher if they were in the classroom.
Why? I didn't feel safe.
I would always get picked on.
I would always you know, people would always call me names, you know, push me and all that.
And so it got really bad to where I had to change schools.
But my mom helped me realize that I am who I am.
I love music, I love to sing, and I'm not gonna let anyone change that.
You know, you're not alone.
There are young people watching right now that are going through the same thing that you went through.
How do you get through it? They're amazing the way they are.
And don't let anyone ever tell you different.
You are who you are and be proud of that.
So, hopefully now things have smoothed out.
Things have definitely gotten better.
- Okay, good.
Any of that happens again, call Uncle Randy and Uncle Keith.
We'll come to the school and "regalate.
" - "Regalate"? - Thank you.
- What are you going to sing today, darling? I'm going to sing up to the Mountain by Patty Griffin.
- Mm.
- Okay.
- I went up to the Mountain because you asked me to up over the clouds - mm.
- To where the sky was blue some days I look down afraid I will fall and though the sun shines I see nothing at all then I hear your your sweet voice oh come and then go telling me softly you love me so - - Hey.

- Oh, my God, thank you.
And I really want you to see that right now.
Like, all the stars have aligned to get you here to us today.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
You've just got natural talent.
Sheer natural talent.
Mm.
This could be the start of something huge for you.
- Oh, my God.
- Are you ready, young bri? - I am ready.
After they all bullied you, and look at what we're telling you.
Yeah, but that type of thing, getting bullied, can happen to people for singing or just looking different or being different or whatever it is, and I'm so proud of you for getting through that.
And happy for you because you, my friend, are ready for this moment.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
- So I think that we should vote.
- Absolutely yes.
- Yes.
- It's a yes for me.

- Beautiful.
- Good luck to all of you.
She's great.
Bye, you guys, good luck.
See you later, guys.
Coming up, we'll conclude our voyage aboard the queen Mary with a story For a while I thought that I actually didn't have much of a chance because of how different I am.
And a voice You could sing anything for me, any day of the week.
- Oh, my God.
- You don't wanna miss.
- We got the special one right here.
As we near the end of our search aboard the historic queen Mary, the last audition of the day belongs to mateos Fernandez.
I'm from Atlanta, Georgia, and I'm 21 years old.
I moved to Los Angeles a year ago to basically pursue what I love to do, which is music, entertaining.
For a while, I thought that I actually didn't have much of a chance because of how different I am.
I've been to many different doctors when I was younger trying to figure out, oh, what do I have? But they couldn't really figure anything out.
They were just like, "dude, you know, it's not a hormonal" problem, you're not disproportionate, like, you're just plain short.
" growing up was definitely a challenge, you know, being different, everybody else would grow taller, and I'd be in the same place.
It was rough with all the bullying in middle school and in high school.
Lots of tears were shed.
To a point, I feel like so many were shed that I feel strong.
I wouldn't change anything, 'cause it made me who I am and pursue what I really love to do.
And music has been that kind of entrance into a world where it doesn't matter for you to be a certain way as long as you love what you're doing and you can affect people in the right way.
Think about all the times you've dreamt of doing something like this, and go get it.
All right? Thanks, man.
- I'm counting on you.
- I appreciate it.
- Nice to see you.
Great things come in small packages, so hopefully I'll be able to live up to that.
What's going down, man? What's going down? What up, bro? - What is your name? - My name is mateos.
- Mateos.
- Is this happening right now? - Yeah.
- Yo, it's real.
- Hi, mateos.
- Definitely.
- I know I'm here, I know you here.
Wow, you guys are beautiful.
Oh, my God.
So are you.
Thank you, man, thank you.
How old are you? Is there a height limit on the show? The only limit there is, is there's gotta be some talent.
- Right.
I hope I can show that to you, bro.
So, what you gonna sing, man? Right, I'm gonna be singing this song that kind of reflects this moment.
It's a change is gonna come by Sam Cooke.
- Mm, great song.
- I love this song.
- Love, love, love.
- Is that good? - Yeah.
- All right.
I was born by the river in a little tent and like the river I've been running ever since it's been a long long time coming but I know my change is gonna come oh please Randy, Mariah Nicki, and Keith.
Let my change come.
Very nice, very nice.
Very nice, very nice.
The thing about choosing a song like that is you gotta know what challenge and adversity and struggle is, and you had that in spades, man.
I loved that.
Thanks.
Absolutely loved it.
You got a great voice.
Thanks, man.
Yeah.
- We're looking for a unique, special person, and you fit that bill.
I didn't want to cry now, I'm sorry.
So, yeah, pretty good.
Mariah, what do you think? Well, first of all, that's one of my favorite songs.
I'm gonna start there.
Regardless of the height, race, sex, whatever, you hit me in the heart.
I love you guys.
This is crazy.
And you brought me to tears, which I am holding back currently, and I want you to know that you can sing anything for me, any day of the week.
- Oh, my God.
- Yo, I saw you lose it for a second.
Yeah, I was trying so hard.
Because that's how much it means to you, because I know society can be crazy and harsh Yeah.
But hey, we don't put up with any of that around here.
This is a talent show.
It's about everybody.
We're all people.
So to me you're 10-feet tall right now.
- - Yeah.
- Come over here.
- So, let's take a vote.
One, two, three.
- Yes! - Whoo! - Mateos, here's your support team.
You got a special one right here.
- Hi, mama.
- Can I say hi to you guys? - Yes.
- Of course, dude, are you kidding? - I love you, brother.
Yeah, man.
Right on.
That was literally the most beautiful moment of my life thus far.
I feel like everything that went wrong before, all the nos, all added up to something great right here.
Everything has led up to this moment, and it's paid off.
What an end to a great day in long beach.
- Excellent.
- Wow.
- I agree.
It's the start of a life-changing adventure for mateos Whoo! As he and 49 other stars aboard the queen Mary embark on - their journey to Hollywood.
