New Tricks s12e06 Episode Script
The Fame Game
Happy New Year 2016 - New Year, New Color ;-) Colour co-ordinated.
Impressive.
I've learnt from the best, Danny.
Have you incorporated a forecast for unforeseeable expenditure? If you mean by that, do I have cash left after paying my bills, the answer's no.
How much have you allocated to live on? I'll be bringing in a packed lunch - for the next year.
- Ooh! What? I left my memory foam pillow at Fiona's place.
Stiff as a board this morning.
Joys of living at two different places.
I let a girlfriend have a drawer at my place once.
Within a week she'd moved in cushions, soft toilet paper and one of those air fresheners that squirts at you every time you walk past it.
- I take it you broke up? - Yeah.
I kept the air freshener, though.
It was actually very nice.
Norwegian Pine, I think.
I thought you were on a course this week? I am, but it's been relocated to upstairs.
But don't think you're having an easy week.
I'll be checking in on you.
If I can stay awake.
Any coffee on the go? Yeah.
Sure.
Been up all night studying? Yep.
Which is more than can be said for Alex.
He's meant to be on study leave.
He says he's gonna get cracking tomorrow.
You've been saying that for weeks.
He'll be back at uni soon.
You've been saying that for weeks too.
Stewie.
Hello.
No, no.
I haven't forgotten, no.
It's just come around a bit quickly, you know.
Yeah.
No, don't worry.
I'll speak to your mum later and get that money transferred.
Stewie, it's your 18th birthday.
A promise is a promise.
OK? All right, son.
OK.
Speak to you soon.
OK.
Bye.
What was the promise? A car.
I take it you didn't factor that into the budget? - Hey! Morning to you too! - Shouldn't you be busy? On it, boss.
Jim and Anna Briggs, a married couple.
they were found dead in Ladies? Do you think we could focus? Oh, yeah.
I know the boss is on a course, but we still have work to do.
Sorry.
were found dead in what appeared to be a suicide pact.
They'd drunk a bottle of champagne laced with a lethal dose of liquid Valium.
Left a suicide note addressed to Anna's sister, which read: "We were tired of being imitations.
Look after our boy.
Jim and Anna.
" Imitations? They were both professional lookalikes.
Anna Briggs was Cher.
And Jim was Mikey Bishop.
Cher I know, but Mikey who? Only the best midfielder Nottingham Forest ever had.
So, why the suit? Why isn't he in football kit? Well, Mikey was a well-known footballer, but he became famous when he'd had to leave the game after a knee injury.
- ACL.
- What? Anterior cruciate ligament.
Nasty.
Became a bit of a hell-raiser: Hanging out with TV stars and Page 3 girls.
Sort of a poor man's Georgie Best.
You must have heard of him, Danny? Yes.
Yes, of course.
Mikey Bishop, yes.
Hell raiser.
Yeah.
Played for Nottingham City.
- Forest.
- Yes, that's the one.
So what happened to their kid? The boy, Tom, was about three years old at the time.
He was sleeping over at his auntie's house.
So the suicide's been called into question? Well, the couple who currently own the house where Jim and Anna died, they found a loose board.
And planted underneath it was a mobile phone in a plastic bag.
They knew about the history of the house, so they handed it in to the police.
It turns out the phone belonged to Anna Briggs.
So a second mobile under the floorboards.
Naughty girl.
And it was full of texts.
Some of them quite explicit.
From Anna to a mystery man.
The last text Anna sent to this man was on the day she died.
"Another row with Jim.
I hate him.
Can't wait to see you tonight to plan our escape.
I love you.
A.
" And a kiss.
She was meant to meet her lover, but croaked it in a suicide pact with the husband that she hates.
Bit of a turnaround.
I assume the lover's phone could never be traced? Yeah.
It was a pay-as-you-go.
No record.
And the fact that he never surfaced after the suicide suggests he wanted the affair to remain hidden.
He could have been behind it.
Poisoned their champagne? It's a possibility but doesn't account for the suicide note.
People will say anything with a gun to their heads.
Maybe Jim found out about the affair, and bumped his wife off and then killed himself.
But there were no signs of a struggle on her body.
Maybe Anna was frightened of her husband and decided to play along? Mm-hm.
Possible.
Steve, why don't you go and talk to their agent.
He was the last person to see them alive.
We can talk to the sister.
If we're ever gonna know what happened that night we've gotta find out the identity of that mystery man.
Yeah, Val, look.
I know you're the same age as Madonna, but let's be honest, darling, you don't look it.
To be fair, even she doesn't wear that pointy bra any more.
Oh, look, I've got to go.
I'll speak to you soon.
Sorry about that.
So tedious how some people won't embrace their age.
- How may I help? - Bertie Richmond? - And you are? - Steve McAndrew.
Never heard of him.
Is he a reality star? No, I'm not a lookalike, Mr Richmond.
I'm from the Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad.
It's about Jim and Anna Briggs.
Oh.
Would you mind going over what you remember about their deaths? It was a terrible business.
Such a shock.
I still can't believe it.
You can't believe it was suicide? Oh, no, I believe that.
I just can't understand why.
Look, this is 13 years ago.
Why has this come up again? I'm just tying up some loose ends.
At the time the police report said you were the last person to see Anna the day she died.
Can you tell me anything about the conversation you had? I remember exactly what we talked about.
She was meant to be opening a bowling alley as Cher.
She strolled in here bold as brass and cancelled at the last minute.
Why did she cancel? Something had come up she said.
It was very unlike her.
She loved being Cher.
Next thing I know, her and Jim have killed themselves.
Were there any signs they were suicidal? Well, Jim could be a bit gloomy.
But Anna absolute party girl.
Not a deep thinker if you know what I mean.
Did you get the impression they were having marriage problems? Who doesn't? My wife locked me out last night cos I had a few too many with Clint Eastwood.
The old rogue always gets me into trouble.
Yeah.
And Jim and Anna's marriage? Well, they seemed fine.
So you weren't aware that Anna was having an affair? No.
No, but nothing would surprise me.
Not in this game.
Last week my Judy Garland and Ross Kemp got married in Fiji.
It don't get more surprising than that, does it? Yeah.
And what about Jim? Do you think he suspected Anna was seeing somebody else? Not that I know of.
But I didn't see much of Jim before he died.
His lookalike work as Mikey Bishop had dried up a bit.
It happens a lot these days.
There's so many reality TV shows, celebs are ten a penny.
Why book a lookalike when you can book Joey Essex instead? - Who? - Exactly.
But if I'm honest I don't think it was just about the work drying up.
After the whole stalking thing Jim seemed to lose interest in being a lookalike.
Somebody was stalking Jim? No, it was the other way round.
Jim was found nosing around Mikey Bishop's house.
It's quite common that a lookalike becomes obsessed with the star they're impersonating.
I miss him.
Jim and Anna weren't just my clients, they were friends.
Well, that's a really good likeness.
Who's she? Lesley Carmichael.
Best Monroe I ever had on my books.
And I've had a few.
Lesley Carmichael.
She wasn't Anna's sister? They weren't just sisters, mate.
They were rivals.
Who'd want to spend their life being a lookalike? Strange thing to do.
Come on, Danny.
Where's your imagination? There must be someone you'd want to be? Think I'd be Siegfried or Roy.
Which ever one didn't get mauled by the tiger.
I saw them in Las Vegas once.
Life-changing.
Because they're good magicians? No.
Because I bet everything on red and lost a lot of cash.
Every time I see a number 9 it's unlucky.
It's mathematics, Ted.
Not luck.
Well, maybe I'll change my mind, and be the fella from Knight Rider - David Hasselhoff.
Who? You don't watch enough good telly.
Lesley Carmichael? Yeah.
I'm Dan Griffin.
This is Ted Case.
From the Unsolved Crime and Open Cases Squad.
We'd like to ask you a few questions about your late sister.
- Can I get you a cup of tea? - No, thank you.
There's been some new evidence.
What new evidence? I know this is a bit of a shock, Lesley, but the best way to help us is to answer some questions.
- Is that OK? - But it was suicide, wasn't it? There was a note.
We're now considering the possibility your sister and brother-in-law might have died in suspicious circumstances.
Are you saying someone killed them? As I said, the best way to help us is to answer some questions.
OK.
What do you need to know? You were babysitting their son Tom, yes? Yeah.
All I know is Anna asked me to have him for the night.
She was going out with friends and Jim was going night fishing.
Were you surprised they would want to kill themselves? Yeah, of course.
I mean, I know me and Anna had our differences but I'd sure she would have told me if she'd been depressed.
Differences? In what way? You know, just sister stuff.
You were both lookalikes at the same agency? Yeah.
Anna never liked the fact that I always got more bookings than her.
Not that she would ever admit it.
Sounds like a bit of friendly rivalry? We were just very different.
Anna was loud and The only thing we really saw eye to eye on was Tom.
Looks like a nice lad.
When they died I adopted him and raised him as my own.
Did Anna leave Tom with you a lot? She liked to go out quite a bit, so I always looked after him.
I didn't mind, I loved it.
Did you know your sister was having an affair? No.
Are you sure? Has this got something to do with the new evidence? Let's just say we're keen to find the man she was seeing.
You said Jim was going night fishing? Lesley? Er yeah, sorry.
Erm With his mate Dylan Sykes.
I haven't seen him for years.
They met through the agency.
He's a lookalike, bit of an oddball.
- And who does Dylan Sykes do? - Bruce Willis.
So these are the gigs nowadays, yeah? I was gutted when Jim died.
He was a good mate.
Were you surprised that Jim would have killed himself? All I know is he got down sometimes.
Then I wouldn't see him for a bit.
What's all this about then? And you were meant to go night fishing with him that evening? Yeah, but I got called into work.
- As Bruce Willis? - No.
I used to earn a bit extra as a doorman at The Eagle on Willesden Lane.
They called me in last-minute and I needed the money.
I was saving up for a chopper.
Like the one in Pulp Fiction.
Mabel's 89 this year.
She's got a thing for Hollywood hard men.
So it would seem.
Erm I do a bit of fishing myself, actually.
- Where were you going? - Epping Forest.
Oh.
I've never been night fishing there.
What's it like? It's all right.
And what about Anna? We gather she was a bit of a wild spirit.
Didn't seem prone to introspection.
Intro-what? Not very sensitive type.
I don't know about that.
I didn't know her really well.
But Jim was a good mate, yeah? Yeah.
So? Don't mates normally talk about their other halves? Why are you asking all these questions? Just tying up some loose ends.
What's there to tie up? It was 13 years ago.
It was suicide.
End of.
- I think that's all for now.
- For now? Thanks for your time.
They haven't allowed night fishing in Epping Forest for the last 50 years.
Is all that for me, Danny? You shouldn't have.
- I didn't.
It's for Fiona.
- Who says romance is dead? Fetish gear? I wouldn't have thought you were the type.
- It's a medical condition.
- What, being a neurotic? You're very funny.
Why are you giving Fiona boxer shorts and an eye mask? So she can keep them at her house.
I keep forgetting things.
It's very discombobulating living in two places.
I take it some work is going on here? Or were you thinking of taking a nap, Danny? Lesley was definitely rattled about her sister having an affair.
Think she knew something and didn't want to tell us? There was no love lost between them.
The only thing they seemed to bond over was Anna's son.
Yeah, but Lesley clearly didn't rate her sister as a very good mum.
Too much of a party girl.
What about this Dylan Sykes? Yeah, very edgy about us having reopened the case.
Perspiring heavily too.
I don't know.
That old babe Mabel he was dancing with, she had a few nifty moves.
And Sykes is saying that he was going night fishing with Jim in Epping Forest, and they stopped that years ago.
So he was lying about where he and Jim were going.
- What about his alibi? - Now, that did check out.
He was called to work at the Eagle in Willesden Lane.
And he certainly was the pub doorman.
How did it go with the agent? He seemed to think Jim suffered from bouts of depression.
And Anna was the complete opposite.
A bit of a party girl.
It all points to Jim having bumped his missus off and then himself.
It's a bit extreme to kill her, though.
A feeling of lack of control could make a person irrational.
The agent said that Jim was found stalking the footballer Mikey Bishop's house.
I'd call that irrational.
We should talk to Mikey Bishop, see if he can shed any light on Jim's state of mind.
And I'm gonna find out about this "escape" that Anna mentioned in her text.
Could be an escape from her marriage.
What? A dirty weekend? If it was a trip, to a travel agent's rather than book on it online.
Yeah.
I'll check the agencies that were local to Jim and Anna.
See if any of them are still operating.
Can't believe I'm going to meet Mikey Bishop.
I should have brought my autograph book.
That guy could really kick arse on the field.
We're here on police business, Steve, not to get autographs.
Don't worry, I'm not gonna go star struck and embarrass you.
It's won't be me you'll embarrass.
Mikey Bishop.
The Mikey Bishop.
It's an honour to meet you, man.
Right, yeah.
OK.
- Er - Thank you.
So, this is my wife, Clara.
- Hello.
- Steve McAndrew.
I left work early.
Thought I could be of some use.
That's very helpful.
Thank you, Mrs Bishop.
Oh, no, no.
Clara.
Please.
So, we know Jim Briggs was stalking you, Mikey.
Oh, no, hardly stalking.
No, he wasn't scary at all.
He was a nice man.
Yeah, he turned up at the house one day.
We had a chat and then he left.
And what did you chat about? He just wanted to see where Mikey lived.
I remember you were really patient with him.
It's ironic I had a lookalike for being a loud-mouth drunk instead of a half-decent footballer.
You were more than half-decent.
I remember that semi-final against Madrid, and that cross you made - Steve.
- Oh.
Sorry.
Do you remember anything else? Anything Jim said? He didn't say much.
No, he just shook your hand, didn't he? And asked you a bit about your football career - and then he left.
- Poor bloke was a bit lost.
Didn't surprise me that he topped himself.
- He seemed - Sweetie.
- They wants facts, not opinion.
- Yeah.
- Thanks for your time.
- Oh, no problem.
It was a good excuse to leave work early.
You're a TV agent? Hm.
That's how Mikey and I met.
When he had to retire he decided to try out some TV.
Punditry, that kind of thing.
And was he successful? Sorry, I don't watch a lot of television.
Er No, not really.
It's a competitive industry.
There are a lot of retired sports stars out there.
Weren't you scared that someone who makes their living impersonating your husband should suddenly turn up at your house? No.
Like I said, Jim wasn't scary, in the least.
He was a gentleman.
If there are other questions that crop up, we'll be in touch.
Er Mr Griffin? Erm It's no secret that my husband drank.
Giving up football it was like a bereavement.
But he has been sober for some years now and life is so much quieter.
And I'd like to keep it that way.
- Meaning? - Erm It wouldn't take much to knock him off the wagon.
If you have any more questions please direct them to me.
I don't want Mikey thinking too much about the past.
- Thanks.
Good to meet you.
- Yeah, good luck.
- Thanks for your time.
- Nice to meet you.
Look, Danny, I got a selfie.
And why would you want one of those? Are you kidding? He's not what I expected, though.
Bit quiet maybe.
A police report was filed.
Look, when Jim Briggs turned up at Mikey Bishop's house police were called to deal with a disturbance.
So the Bishops did call the police? No.
Not the Bishops.
Their neighbour.
Rhona Mitchell.
Said she could see them fighting in the driveway.
Mikey Bishop suffered a black eye and a split lip.
- Jim Briggs - Not a scratch.
We need to speak to this Mrs Mitchell.
No.
She passed away five years ago.
Why would the adoring fan beat up his hero? And why did the Bishops lie? First thing tomorrow, go back, visit the Bishops.
Whatever happened they don't want us to know about it.
Us? Didn't take you long to start interfering, did it? You're supposed to be on a course not bothering your head with case work.
You're missing us, aren't you? If you must know, the course is very interesting and I'm really enjoying the break from work.
The fight between Jim Briggs and Mikey Bishop might not be connected to the case.
My gut says it is.
This is you enjoying a break from work? All I'm saying is if this Clara Bishop wants us to talk to her rather than Mikey there's got to be more to it.
We've done some digging on Mikey.
Looks like he dropped out of the public eye completely over the last few years.
Not even a sign of any sort of tabloid story.
According to Clara, since he stopped drinking he's had a much quieter life.
Makes sense he's turned his back on his partying lifestyle.
Well, you know, maybe she did lie just to keep things nice and calm for him? I think Sasha's right.
There's more to it than that.
Something more than her worrying about Mikey's emotional state.
Never underestimate the "power of love".
Please don't start singing, Ted.
Being married to an alcoholic womaniser can't have been that much fun.
But she stuck to him all those years.
For better for worse, for richer or poorer.
Trish Trish Please, just listen to me for a second.
If I don't pay my bills today I'm going to get cut off.
OK? Now, if you could pay my half now, Stewie can buy the car and I'll pay you back the next time.
Oh, come on! It's Stewie you're punishing here not me! - You're talking rubbish! - Don't shoot the messenger.
I'm just telling you what I read.
According to Einstein here, you are now more likely to be hit by a bus than you are to have a successful marriage.
I'm never getting married again.
One ex-wife's enough.
I'll second that.
Well, Danny's bought a memory pillow to leave at Fiona's.
Things must be getting a bit serious.
Well, Alex needs picking up.
I'd better go.
Come on, we want to hear about your course.
You really want to hear about the European convention on policing and human rights? Yes, I do.
Why don't you make him take the bus? Boys need to be prepared for the big, bad world.
- I know.
I used to be one.
- Yeah.
In the 1920s.
Times have changed.
Young lad on his own, out at night Very dangerous.
Yeah, somebody might try and marry him.
- Hello, you.
- Hello.
Ooh.
Presents for moi? No.
Well, unless you want a toothbrush, spare socks and pants, an eye mask and a memory foam pillow? I thought I could leave them at your place? Great minds think alike.
I thought I could keep leave my stuff here.
I can't keep lugging my hair dryer around in my handbag.
Or you could just move in here? We're not gonna have the same conversation again? I can't move into your place, it's too far from work.
I can't move into your place.
It's too vintage.
- There is another way.
- I am not moving to Yorke Road.
But it could be an adventure for both of us.
I like it here.
This is where I raised Holly.
This is where my memories are.
I'm not ready to move yet.
Behind that tough, criminal mind is a soft teddy bear.
But I promise not to tell anyone.
Right.
Well, I'd better get used to living out of a box.
- Fiona, you're right.
- Hm? It is time to embrace change.
Come on.
We're gonna sort this out right now.
We're gonna look at the house on Yorke Road? No, we're gonna buy a big wardrobe.
So you can keep more of your stuff here.
A big wardrobe? Right.
Yeah, I know I'm supposed to pay today but I need to defer until next month.
I need electricity, I've got three young children here.
So so you'll speak to your manager, yeah? Sorry, what's your name? Maureen.
Thanks, Maureen.
You're an angel.
Hi, Dad.
Just wanted to let you know, I think I've found a car.
I'm gonna see it Friday.
It's perfect, Dad.
A nice little Golf.
I'll let you know how I get Thanks a lot, Maureen! Why did Jim hit Mikey? Mikey came home drunk and he found Jim snooping round.
Erm He started to have a go at him.
You know, laughing at Jim for impersonating him.
He was vile.
Jim must have felt so humiliated.
So Mikey goaded Jim into punching him? And Mikey deserved it.
You should have told us this at the start.
Withholding information is taken very seriously.
I was terrified the papers might get hold of something.
It doesn't matter Mikey hasn't been in the public eye for the last 20 years.
They'll still come sniffing around looking for dirt.
I won't go through that again.
I gather Mikey was something of a tabloid favourite.
You'll have to ask him about that.
Our colleague is at your house right now doing just that.
So when Jim Briggs hit you, how come you didn't hit him back? Yeah, well, I tried, but I was so pissed I just swung at him and fell over.
Most of my cuts and bruises were my own doing.
Right.
Well Look, I think we've covered everything.
If there's anything else we'll get in touch.
Sorry.
Let's see who it is.
- Would you mind if I get this? - No, no.
Course.
Thank you.
Hello? Yes, Stewie.
Hi, son.
No, actually, I can't talk right now, but Yeah, your mum's right.
We do need to talk.
Er I tell you what, I'll call you back later tonight.
OK.
Yeah, great.
OK, Stewie.
Yeah, bye.
- How old's your boy? - He's about to turn 18.
What I'd give to be 18 again.
- Is he having a party? - Er yeah.
Should be great.
I'd love to have had kids but erm it didn't work out.
You saved yourself a lot of money.
My kid wants a car.
My first car was a beat-up Capri.
God, I loved that heap of junk.
Doesn't matter how many flash cars you get over the years, nothing beats the feeling of that first motor.
He's a lucky lad.
I'm not sure he sees it that way.
Where's all your trophies and photographs and stuff? If it was me I'd have them all over the walls.
And be reminded you're no longer the man you was? No, thanks.
Must have been hard giving all that up? Can I ask you a personal question? Yeah.
Sure.
Is that why you you stopped going out so much? What you really mean is, "Is that why you became such a weirdo recluse?" - I didn't mean to pry.
Sorry.
- It's fine.
It's It's partly that - Yeah.
- Yeah.
Do you mind if I ask you a personal question? - Sure.
- What's it like being a dad? You might want to ask someone else that.
I mean I might act like Father of the Year, but erm believe me, I'm not.
Don't be too hard on yourself, mate.
We're all acting in some way, aren't we? - Well, thanks.
- Thank you.
- OK.
Bye now.
- Cheers.
I need to ask you a favour.
Depends what it is.
I'm so broke the only thing I can spare you is a kidney, and I doubt if that's up to much.
I've bought a flat-pack wardrobe and I need help to assemble it.
Yeah, no problem.
Are you going to say something sarcastic about my DIY skills? Are you OK? - Yeah, I'm fine.
- Are you sure? Yeah, I'm fine, OK? All right.
I'm convinced Clara Bishop's lying.
She's clearly worried her old man was being interviewed alone.
He might say something he shouldn't.
Mikey's version of events is the same as Clara's.
- I'm inclined to believe him.
- That's cos you're a fan.
Do you know he had a selfie taken with Mikey yesterday? Yes, so what? Here.
Have a look.
Poor guy.
All these years of boozing and fighting have taken their toll.
Looks more like an ex-boxer than an ex-footballer.
Wow.
What do you know? Old Knight Rider himself.
What? That car drove past Lesley Carmichael's house yesterday.
- Are you sure? - Positive.
Well, it could just be a coincidence.
Yeah, maybe.
She certainly seemed to notice it.
I think we need something more concrete before we bring Mikey in, don't you? Why don't you two have another chat with Lesley.
See if she knows anything about this.
OK.
Lesley said she hadn't seen Dylan Sykes in years.
Maybe it's some kind of showbiz reunion.
No idea.
So you've never seen that car drive past your house? - No.
- Why was Dylan Sykes here? Dylan rang me.
He was angry that I put you on to him.
Why? Because he felt you were accusing him of something.
And now I know how he feels.
We're trying to find out what happened to your sister on the night she died.
You think she was murdered, don't you? It's a possibility.
But who would want to do that? - I can't believe it.
- Look at the car again.
- I don't know it! - I think you do.
I can't stop Mikey Bishop driving past my house! It's a free country! We didn't say it was Mikey Bishop's car.
OK.
I have seen him, but I don't know why he comes.
- How often does he come? - I don't know.
Twice a week? You're seriously telling us Mikey Bishop regularly drives past by your house and you don't ask him why or call the police? Look, I don't know anything, all right? I just want me and my son to be left alone.
She knows exactly why Mikey drives past her house.
- She's protecting him.
- Just like his wife.
Question is, why? And how does Dylan Sykes fit in to this? I'm your mother, Alex.
I'm allowed to stalk you.
Have you done any of your project yet? What? There's nothing wrong with the laptop.
OK, I'll have a look at it.
Use pen and paper for now.
In the drawer.
Right.
Well, I'll bring some home from work.
Have you eaten? Well, make sure you have some fruit.
No more junk food.
It kills brain cells.
All right.
I'll see you later.
Bye-bye.
What? You sound like his mother, his doctor and PA rolled into one.
I just wish he'd do some work, Ted.
I even tried to do a study session with him last night.
Me with my coursework and him with his project.
He lasted about five minutes.
A mate of his called and he went out clubbing.
Yeah, I can see it now.
You with your pristine pencil case and shiny folders, and him with a stubby old pencil and a scrap of paper covered in doodles.
I don't know what to do with him, Ted.
I mean, I could call his dad, but he's about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Besides, what can he do from Canada? Alex is a big boy now, all right? Let him sort himself out.
You're doing him no favours keep on trying to run his life.
I know, but he's always needed my help.
He didn't walk until he was 15 months and that's only cos I put things out of his reach so he had to.
Yeah, all right, well, if he doesn't do his project he'll get a bollocking from his tutor and maybe he'll have to face the consequences.
Like a grown-up.
Remember that old-fashioned thing? - It doesn't make sense.
- Cos it's lying on its front.
No, no.
I'm talking about the case.
Mikey Bishop, Dylan Sykes, Lesley Carmichael, they're all linked through Jim Briggs.
He's Lesley's brother-in-law, Mikey Bishop's lookalike and Dylan Sykes' mate.
Right.
But how are they tied together now? Perhaps Lesley has something both men want? She didn't wanna get Mikey into trouble and her reasons for meeting Dylan are very thin.
And I keep coming back around to why did Jim hit Mikey that night.
There's something else happened.
And it's connected to those deaths.
We've got three basic questions here.
Why did Jim Briggs hit Mikey Bishop? Why is Lesley protecting Mikey? And What's Dylan Sykes hiding? Oh.
Hello, son.
Yeah.
Hello! Sorry.
Hang on.
It's huge.
Just normal wardrobe size, Danny.
So, erm you got anything else you'd like to say, to me in particular? It's huge.
Yeah, sorry, I haven't got back to you.
Things have been a bit full-on, you know.
Listen, Stewie, there's something I need to tell you.
I I can't get you a car for your birthday.
OK? I erm This is nothing to do with your mum.
It's entirely my fault.
Hello? Are you still there? Oh Yeah, no, sure.
You call me back tomorrow.
That's fine, son, yeah.
And, Stewie, are you having a party for your birthday? Hello? So now the bed is pushed right up against the wall, which means the only way out of it is by crawling across.
Which Fiona finds hilarious, of course.
She says we don't need to move anywhere, we can just live in the wardrobe.
I don't think it's funny at all.
- You OK? - Yeah, sorry.
Just thought Stewie might have called back by now.
I take it you've told him about the car? Yeah, yeah.
I paid all my bills instead and now I can live like a king for the rest of the month on £27.
64.
Happy days.
Look, for what it's worth you're doing the right thing.
Then why do I feel so shite? Yeah, I've already got three Will and Kates on my books.
But between me and you, you are by far the best.
Uncanny.
- Nice to meet you.
- I'll be in touch.
- Hello again.
- Hi.
- Dan Griffin.
- Hello.
People can't get enough of the royals.
Those two could earn me a small fortune.
What do you know about the relationship between Jim Briggs and Mikey Bishop? I know Jim was caught nosing around Mikey's house, but I don't know any more than that.
So you don't know that he hit Mikey? Blimey, no.
I didn't, no.
Like I say, I didn't see him much after that.
Because he stopped being a lookalike? To be honest it was never really Jim who wanted to be Mikey.
I think he did it more for Anna.
- What do you mean? - Oh, she loved Mikey Bishop.
Huge fan.
We used to joke the only reason she married Jim was because he looked like him.
So Anna was with Jim because she had a thing for Mikey.
Not a recipe for a happy marriage.
- Any sign of Dylan? - Not a sniff.
How did it go with the agent? Turns out it was Anna who was a big Mikey Bishop fan.
Oh, so perhaps Jim was jealous.
Maybe that's why he hit Mikey that night? Maybe, yeah.
Hey, we're up here.
Hasta la vista, baby.
That's not Bruce Willis, that's Arnie.
You really need to watch more TV, Danny.
I do wish people would stop saying that.
Why would Dylan Sykes do a runner like that? Well, Jim was his mate.
Maybe he knew Jim had killed Anna and he's protecting him.
Or maybe he did it? Yeah.
And with Anna being the big Mikey Bishop fan what does that give us? It's a possibility Jim Briggs hit Mikey because he was jealous.
But it's a bit OTT.
Yeah.
What more do we have on Mikey? Oh, well He was a good guy.
He's patron of the Hopewood Park school, Swiss Cottage.
He's donated so much money to their facilities they've named a sports hall after him.
And he's done the same for the local sea scouts.
Ha-ha! Seek and ye shall find.
This is one of the local travel agents that's come back.
Evidently, Anna did book a weekend away.
To Rome.
The Hotel La Fuga.
And look who else is booked on the flight.
Mikey Bishop.
Looks like we've found our mystery man, boys.
So we don't think Jim Briggs went to Mikey's house as a fan.
He went as a jealous husband.
That's why he hit him.
Mikey and Anna were having an affair.
They were meeting to talk about their dirty weekend in Rome.
So he must know something about what happened to her.
That school that Mikey donates to Hopewood Park? They wear a grey blazer, and a blue and grey striped tie.
So? So Lesley Carmichael's son was wearing that uniform in his school photos.
- He's right.
- It could be a coincidence.
Ted Case? There was a picture of him in another uniform.
A Sea Scouts uniform.
What? So, Mikey's giving money to Lesley's son's school and his scout club? Why? Because he's not Lesley's son.
Anna and Mikey had an affair, didn't they? What are you saying, Mikey is Tom's father? Is that why he keeps driving by the house like that? Mikey Bishop's been knocked down in a hit-and-run.
- Any sign of the car? - No.
Just an old couple out driving.
Found him and phoned the ambulance.
So, what do you think? Foul play? Only Mikey can tell us that and he's unconscious in hospital.
Why was he walking along a country lane late at night? The man's an ex-alcoholic and clearly troubled.
Nah.
There's more to it than that.
You think this is connected to the Briggs case? Well, he was Anna Briggs' lover.
The lover she was supposed to be meeting that night.
But then, of course, she went and died.
He's gotta know something.
And now he's been knocked down by a hit-and-run.
Well, if it was deliberate I'd have my money on Dylan Sykes.
He's up to his eyes in this.
I just know it.
I checked with Intel.
There's not a sniff of him anywhere.
Don't worry.
He's got to come up for air sooner or later.
There is another option.
What if Mikey killed the Briggs' and couldn't stand the guilt? Maybe he wanted to die? And then he is knocked down by accident, by a driver who panics and then drives off.
Either way he's still a suspect.
We need to know exactly where he was the night Jim and Anna died.
- Any change with Mikey? - No.
He's still unconscious.
The police have only just left.
I've answered everything I know.
Which is nothing.
I didn't even know he'd left the house last night.
Now, really, please, I must get back to the hospital.
We didn't come about that, Mrs Bishop.
We wanna speak to you about the Briggs case.
Oh, for God's sake! Really? We've told you what we know.
There's nothing else to say.
We realise this is a difficult time, but we do need to ask you a few more questions.
Do you realise that this is your fault.
Hm? I told you that I did not want Mikey thinking about the past.
I told you to direct your questions to me and you didn't listen.
He's a very, very fragile man.
He's a fragile stupid man! What was he thinking walking down that lane in the dark? I'm really sorry.
I have to go.
There's been a development.
There's no easy way to tell you this.
Your husband and Anna Briggs it looks likely they had an affair.
And I'm sorry to say we think that Mikey fathered her child.
That is not true.
Well I'm afraid it's looking that way.
He was meant to be meeting her the night she died.
No, I can't believe this is happening.
Did you know anything about this? Of course I bloody didn't! Do you think I'd still be married to him if I did? We just need to know where he was the night Jim and Anna Briggs died.
I know exactly where he was.
He was in hospital.
Earlier that night he'd been he'd been in a fight in some pub.
He was very badly beaten up.
And the next day I was at his bedside when I read the news about Anna Briggs.
And I was feeling so sorry for her, and all the time she was having an affair with my husband.
It's almost funny.
I've gotta go.
The pub where he was beaten up, where was it? I've no idea.
But then I never knew where he was.
Now, do you mind? I've asked the ambulance service to find out which pub they picked Mikey up from that night.
Help us with our timings.
This might be nothing but it seems paparazzi stories on Mikey dried up around the time he was beaten up.
Which, also, it's when he started to become a recluse.
Yeah, that's not so strange.
The man was beaten to a pulp.
That would be enough to put anyone off going out.
It certainly scared someone into giving up the booze.
There something else we're missing here.
Yeah.
Speaking of that, what about Dylan Sykes? He could be involved in the deaths of Jim and Anna.
Maybe he got scared Mikey was gonna say something and tried to kill him too? What about Lesley Carmichael? We could lean on her for more on Sykes.
She may know where he's hiding.
She's lied to us consistently.
She knew Mikey was driving by the house, but didn't tell the police because she must have known he was Tom's father.
So it's a fair bet she lied about why Dylan came to see her.
- Yeah.
- Let's get her in, eh? See what she's got to say for herself.
I'm meant to be on a course.
You can't stroll into reception and get them to pull me out.
Hello, Alex.
How's uni? - You going back soon? - Yeah.
No rush.
What you doing here, Alex? I've come to say sorry about last night.
Right.
I should have stayed home with you and studied.
I know you were only trying to help.
So, you've come to say you're sorry? And to borrow some money.
I'm meant to be going paintballing with my mates.
What about your project? You're meant to be on study leave.
I'll start tomorrow, I promise.
Oh, no.
This isn't good.
Are the next words gonna be, "Look, Alex"? Look, Alex, you know I love you and I've loved having you around.
But it's time you went back to uni.
I told you, Mum, I'm on study leave And it's time you stopped lying.
Tell the truth.
Why haven't you gone back? OK, but you've got to promise not to go mad? I'm not gonna promise that.
But I promise that whatever you tell me I will remain calm.
I failed my year and I've been kicked out.
Kicked out?! From now on you are sorting out your own problems.
You can call the Dean yourself.
I'm not sure me speaking to him is gonna cut it.
You've done something else.
There might have been a small - very small - fire that I accidently started in my halls of residence from the Chinese lanterns we were lighting.
No, I'm not getting involved.
This is the only way you'll learn.
I'm not doing this for you, Alex.
- I know, Mum.
- I mean it.
I know you do.
This is the very last time.
Why did you lie? You've known all along that Mikey and your sister had an affair.
You also knew Mikey was Tom's father, otherwise you would have called the police when you saw he kept driving past.
If you don't start telling me the truth you'll be arrested for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
Er Anna always had a thing for Mikey Bishop.
She used to go to the clubs where he'd hang out, hoping to talk to him.
They ended up having a fling.
Then over the years I've seen Mikey outside our house and the penny dropped.
He was Tom's father.
I didn't report him because I was scared if it all came out Mikey would make a claim over Tom.
Then when the investigation was re-opened and you guys were so keen to find the man that Anna had been having the affair with I started to really worry.
What if he'd done something to my sister? Tell us something useful, Lesley.
I went to speak to Mikey But his wife wouldn't let me see him Sent me away.
She was so rude.
Why did she think you'd come? She didn't know about the affair or Tom.
She knew everything.
That's why Dylan came to see me.
He threatened me to keep my mouth shut about the affair.
He said, if I didn't, then Mikey would start legal proceedings to get visitation rights to see Tom.
Dylan Sykes was working for Clara Bishop.
Ted.
Clara Bishop knew all along Mikey had an affair with Anna Briggs and fathered her child.
Dylan Sykes was employed as her heavy and he threatened Lesley to keep her mouth shut.
What doesn't make sense is why Dylan would work for them.
He was Jim Briggs' mate.
Jim hated Mikey Bishop.
So where's their connection? I think I might have the answer.
The ambulance report has just come through.
Mikey Bishop was picked up from a pub called the Hogs Head.
The police were called to the disturbance and they kept this CCTV footage on file.
- God, he's hammered.
- Yeah.
The Hogs Head used to have another name, before they gave it a makeover.
It was The Eagle.
Christ, he's really going for it.
Dylan Sykes.
So, Dylan Sykes puts Mikey Bishop in hospital.
But Mikey doesn't press charges.
Then a few years later Dylan's working for him.
And you don't usually employ someone that's beaten you to a pulp.
Sykes was probably working for them back then too.
Why would Mikey want to be beaten up? What's he gain? Dan Griffin? I've got the medical report here for Mikey.
He evidently sustained a fractured cheekbone, a broken nose and a fractured jaw bone.
There's no trace of alcohol in his blood.
He was stone cold sober? Why would he act drunk? Yep.
Thank you.
That was the hospital.
Mikey Bishop's regained consciousness.
Let's go and see what he has to say.
That's not Mikey Bishop.
It's Jim Briggs.
- My husband's too weak to talk.
- He's not your husband, is he? - What do you mean? - He's Jim Briggs.
- Don't be ridiculous.
- You are Jim Briggs.
- Stop saying that.
- Aren't you? - Yes, I am.
- Keep your mouth shut.
You killed your wife Anna and the real Mikey Bishop and then you swapped lives with him, didn't you? - Yes, we did.
- Shut up, Mikey! I'm not Mikey! It's over, Clara.
It's over.
So Mikey Bishop was sleeping with your wife? And that's why you hit Mikey.
I hated him.
It's what we always used to talk about, wasn't it? How much we hated Mikey.
And then we fell in love.
So you killed your husband and Anna with poisoned champagne.
And replaced your husband with Jim.
Mikey used to humiliate me constantly with women and booze.
Anna always had a bottle of champagne in the fridge and we pushed a syringe full of liquid Valium through the cork.
Jim going out fishing with Dylan, it was just a ploy.
Knew as soon as he left that Mikey would come round.
And where does Dylan Sykes fit into all this? Erm He'd have done anything for money.
After I left Mikey and Anna, I went to the pub where Dylan worked.
I pretended to be drunk and we paid him to beat me up.
Because Jim had to become Mikey Bishop that night.
And even though they looked so very similar, Jim had a slightly different nose.
So, we used the fight to explain it and no one was any the wiser.
Was this your idea or Clara's? She was gonna launch me as Mikey, give me his career.
She never did.
I was waiting for the right time.
Yeah, but it never was the right time, was it, Clara? I gave up my son for nothing.
And that is how you have screwed us up.
Trying to see that bloody boy And the hit-and-run? Was that you, Clara? After I stepped out of line, like Mikey used to, she tried to kill me.
You were going to the police.
I didn't mean to hurt you.
No, you meant to kill me.
I was trying to talk to you, to reason with you.
You left me for dead, Clara.
I know.
And I'm sorry.
I do love you.
You're incapable of love.
We were happy once.
Don't kid yourself, Clara.
We were both pretending.
- Still no word from your boy? - No.
- He'll come round.
- Yeah.
Dylan Sykes has just been picked up.
He's blaming everything on the Bishops.
- He's crying like a baby.
- Not very Bruce Willis, is it? No.
Let's just give him a nice night's sleep in a draughty cell and talk to him in the morning.
Do you fancy a drink? I'd love one.
- Ted? - Yeah.
I'll see you there.
Oh, Sasha, do you fancy a drink? Can't.
I've got to go home and do some studying.
The European convention on policing and human rights - won't read itself.
- You're still on that? It's a very long book.
So Alex has been kicked out of uni? Not any more.
He rang the Dean to apologise.
- Oh, yeah.
- What? I know you rang the Dean.
- How? - Because you're a lovely mum.
That, and there's no way you'd put up with Alex any longer.
He was going back to uni come hell or high water.
You played the "I'm a desperately worried mother" card? Actually I played the, "I'm a detective chief inspector" card.
I've told Alex that is the last time I clean up his mess.
Course it is.
Night, boss.
Night, Ted.
Imagine killing so you can be someone else.
Mind you, imagine being a lookalike.
Just as horrific.
Aren't we all pretending to be other people? Don't you think it's part of human nature? I think we all have dual personalities.
Parts of ourselves that clash with each other.
Introvert versus extrovert.
- Child versus parent.
- Yeah.
- I wasn't talking about you - I know, I know.
But maybe it's time I stopped playing at being a parent and just started taking it a bit seriously.
- Hang on a minute.
- What are you doing? Won't be long.
You can't buy Stewie a car from here.
Look at the prices.
- Bear with me.
- Steve! I can't believe you just did that.
It was for the best.
Yes, this is much better than driving.
Even so, Steve, selling your car it's a bit extreme.
I made a promise to my boy.
Now he can get a set of wheels and I can sleep at night.
Enough's enough, Danny.
It's time I bloody grew up.
I'm selling the flat as well.
You know, change can be a good thing.
The future is a curious creature.
Don't go optimistic on me.
There's just so much a poor Scotsman can handle in one day.
- Ah, you took your time.
- Don't ask.
- Hi, Fiona.
- Lovely to see you, Steve.
You know, you may not have to sell your flat.
There may be another option.
You see, you could rent it out, downsize and move somewhere cheap.
And when you say cheap? I mean somewhere where the landlord will just charge you enough to cover his mortgage.
Somewhere like I don't know here.
- Are you serious? - That's cosy.
Well, I won't be here, you see.
Where are you gonna be? Living with you.
On the Yorke Road.
Oh, Danny.
Well I do love this old place, but it's time to let go of the past.
Find somewhere with a bit more room.
Find somewhere where I can actually get out of bed.
I knew there'd be a logical reason behind it somewhere.
- Are you sure? - Absolutely.
Well, Danny, this is fantastic.
I really appreciate it.
Enough to help me move house? Yeah, well Maybe not that much.
Happy New Year 2016 - New Year, New Color ;-)
