The Voice US (2011) s12e09 Episode Script
The Battles Premiere
1 Daly: The blind auditions are over.
Now the battle to win "The Voice" begins.
This is your opportunity.
You have to decide whether you want to be the best you can be for your future.
Daly: Tonight, helping our coaches prepare their teams will be four of the biggest names ever to join "The Voice.
" Advising Team Adam is Oscar winner and 10-time Grammy award-winning, platinum-selling artist John Legend.
I love the idea that this show focuses on finding the best singers and giving them an opportunity to be seen and heard, so I'm excited to be a part of it.
12 seasons to get you here.
I'm glad you're here, buddy.
I love you.
I missed you, sugar.
Daly: Team Blake has two-time ACM and CMA Entertainer of the Year, chart-topping country-music superstar Luke Bryan.
You're staring at the page still.
Like, you twirl her and you're flipping your dadgum hair, and y'all are like, Yeeeah Daly: Helping Team Alicia, Grammy-nominated, triple-platinum-selling rapper, producer, and radio sensation, the king of Snapchat, DJ Khaled.
It could be stronger, because I hear such great, strong parts.
I want them parts to be over here, too.
RJ: Working with a superstar like DJ Khaled is mind-blowing.
He's a major producer, hitmaker, so I'm very honored to be in the same presence as that man.
Daly: And advising Team Gwen, five-time Grammy award winner, one of the best-selling artists in history, with over 200 million records sold, and one of the greatest voices of all time, Céline Dion.
Where's the red button? [Laughter.]
Oh, my God! Céline: What I love about this show is that they all have what it takes to make it in the industry and win.
Yeah! That was incredible! Wow! Bye-bye! Céline has left the building.
Daly: With advisers of this caliber, artists' performances will reach new heights.
I am titaniuuuum You totally blew a hole on that stage.
That was a boxing match posing as a singing competition.
You have to make a record.
That performance was worthy of any Grammy stage.
Daly: Coaches' decisions will be more heartbreaking.
It's not an easy choice at all.
Damn! This one hurts me.
Daly: And their steals Daly: That is a steal! And another one! more crucial.
Make it three! No! Daly: The battle to be named The Voice [Laughs.]
Yeah! Whoo-hoo-hoo! Daly: starts right now.
Okay.
Here we go, guys.
Ready.
Battle rounds, season 12.
I'm one step closer to winning another season of "The Voice.
" It is our first battle round together.
Yay! Don't be so selfish, Blake.
My job is to be selfish on this show.
Got two steals.
I'm about to use them.
Where are you going? Your way of thinking is dated.
Okay? It's a new world, where the women rule.
Girl power.
I got to go win this show.
Girl power.
Come on, girls.
Come on, Adam.
Daly: Blake's kicking off the first battle of the season with his friend and adviser country-music superstar Luke Bryan.
All right, buddy.
Finally! You got me.
12 seasons to get you here.
I brought in my old friend Luke Bryan because he may be the most popular artist in country music today.
You abandoned me.
I don't do country music anymore.
I'm a television star.
[Laughs.]
Luke's a great songwriter, he's a great performer, he's a great singer.
He's gonna be able to bring something to the table for each individual.
I'm glad you're here, buddy.
I love you.
I missed you, sugar.
Give me a kiss.
Daly: Here is Blake's first pairing of the night 14-year-old Brennley Brown from Apple Valley, California, versus 25-year-old Lauren Duski from Nashville.
Brennley: I grew up on a ranch.
My dad really just introduced me into country music, and I've been watching this show since I was 8 years old.
Made you feel aliiiiiiiiiive [Cheers and applause.]
Oh, my God! If there is somebody else up and down this line who can help make your mark on country music no no and absolutely not.
I pick Blake.
Yes! It's just amazing that this girl is only 14 years old and she has this much talent.
You're so much taller in person! Lauren: I come from a family of dentists.
When I graduated, I had the choice to go to dental school or pursue my dream, and it was a no-brainer.
You love me And sooooooon Hey! You're somebody who clearly can win this thing.
I pick Blake.
Yeah! Lauren and Brennley, they're my pop-country girls.
I'm excited about both of them, but I need their lane to be clear for whichever one I choose.
[Laughs.]
Whoa! Oh! How are y'all? I thought my heart rate was under control.
Thank you.
How you doing? I'm Luke.
Nice to meet you.
Oh, my gosh.
First of all, it's crazy to be working with Blake Shelton, and then, like, Luke Bryan's sitting right next to him.
I was like, "Is this happening right now?" You want to hear a backstory on this song? So, obviously, Taylor Swift wrote it, and Little Big Town, I was with them when they decided that they wanted to record it.
Do you get any kind of anything out of that? Just a story to last a lifetime.
[Chuckles.]
I know I'm probably better off on my own Blake: "Better Man" is current on the radio.
Little Big Town is a band who has a different sound to them that I think the girls can take and make their own.
And I just miss you And I just wish you were a better man Lauren she has a little bit of Trisha Yearwood.
You're killing me, man.
Luke: Yeah.
You're killing me.
A little bit of that sound, you know? But you need to pour a little bit of anger in the first chorus.
If you say to somebody, "I wish you were a better human being" Yeah.
there's a part of it that's sad, but there's a part of it that's putting the guy in his place.
You know, it is a very deep and emotional song.
For me, I have to think about this one breakup.
Wish it wasn't 4 a.
m.
I have to picture him, like, there, and, like, thinking, like, "This is this is me singing to you," [Voice breaking.]
and, um Sorry.
[Chuckling.]
Hopefully, I don't lose it onstage like this.
Oh, golly.
He'll know, too.
He'll be like, "Oh, gosh.
" I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man She uses that break in her voice.
Yes.
I love that.
It's just it's such a cool thing.
Luke: Well, the fact that you have kind of that crying, that angst thing at 14 is Brennley: Right.
it's amazing.
It was a little bit hard to connect 'cause, you know, I've never had an experience like this before.
Well, if it happens to you, Blake and I will come handle it.
I'm only 14.
I've never been in a relationship before.
I got to find something in my life that I can relate to with this song.
Lauren, I think you've got to milk that sexy, sultry deal and then open up on the chorus.
Yeah.
You've got the ability to take it to another volume.
Yeah.
The other thing, Brennley, for you is diction.
Okay.
Which is, you're telling a story here, and we need to know what it is you're saying.
Got you.
This has been the best surprise.
Oh, my gosh.
Luke Bryan.
Luke: Oh, good.
This has been awesome for y'all and one of the worst days of my life getting to work with him.
Sorry.
He is such And he asked.
He's such an idiot.
Oh, gosh.
He does make me seem smarter when he's around.
Watching stars be born, I don't think that ever gets old.
Enjoy it.
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
Brennley, ultimately, your mind goes to artists like Taylor Swift when they just came out, and Lauren's voice has a lot of the same characteristics that Karen Fairchild had from Little Big Town.
Thank you! Bye.
I really put them on an even playing field.
Daly: It's the night of their battle, and both artists are ready to take the stage.
Brennley: I'm feeling excited, a little bit nervous, of course.
Just turning 15 today.
I want to prove to Blake that just because I'm younger doesn't mean I can't work really hard.
Daly: Brennley Brown! [Cheers and applause.]
Lauren: It's been a long journey of busting butt in Nashville.
Daly: Here is Lauren Duski! [Cheers and applause.]
Lauren: Now I feel like I've got what it takes to win.
[Cheers and applause.]
Let the battle begin.
I know I'm probably better off on my own Than loving a man who didn't know what he had When he had it And I see The permanent damage you did to me Never again I just wish I could forget when it was magic Wish it wasn't 4 a.
m.
Standing in the mirror saying to myself "You know you had to do it," I know The bravest thing I ever did was ruuuun Sometimes in the middle of the night I can feel you again And I just miss you And I just wish you were a better man And I know why we had to say goodbye Like the back of my hand And I just miss you And I just wish you were a better man A better man Oh, a better man I hold on to this pride Because these days, it's all I have And I gave you my best, but we both Know you can't say that That's nice.
You can't say that Yeah, ohh I can feel you again And I just miss you And I just wish you were a better man And I know why we had to say goodbye Like the back of my hand And I just miss you And I just wish you were a better man A better man A better man Oooh [Cheers and applause.]
Daly: Let's hear it for Brennley and Lauren! We did it! We did it! Ladies, beautiful job.
Excellent.
Blake, hang tight.
Let's talk to your fellow coaches.
Alicia.
Ladies, that was so beautiful.
Lauren, your voice has this honey, raspy, strong, beautiful thing happening.
And, Brennley, being 15 and talking about "I wish you were a better man," you know, I felt that you were very authentically clear about what you were delivering.
Thank you.
But they're both really incredible artists, so well done.
Daly: Thank you, Alicia.
Gwen.
[Applause.]
With Brennley, I love your confidence.
I think you have great style, you know? Thank you.
And I love you.
I think you're awesome.
Thank you very much.
Lauren, your voice is so rich, and you have a real kind of ease onstage.
But I would probably pick Brennley because something about your innocence that I would want to work with that, you know? Thank you very much.
But you're both so incredible.
Thank you, Coach.
Adam.
There was so much about what you did that spoke to where you were both at in your lives.
It was actually almost eerie in certain moments because, Lauren, you know, you were a little bit more comfortable and graceful in this particular moment.
Brennley, you're young, and you have that beautifully frantic, emotional energy that is really real.
You're both in pretty great shape.
Thank you, sir.
Thank you.
Thank you, Adam.
[Applause.]
Buddy.
I don't want to let either one of the two of you go, you know? But I have to, and all this is gonna boil down to is what I can envision moving forward with my team.
Blake, who is the winner of this battle? This one hurts me.
The winner of this battle is Lauren.
Lauren, congratulations.
You are moving on to the Knockouts, representing Team Blake.
[Cheers and applause.]
Way to go, sweetie.
Thank you so much.
Great job.
Great job.
Like, my heart is pounding out of my chest.
I'm just feeling very, very blessed right now.
Daly: All right, coaches, let me remind you, Brennley is available to steal.
[Cheers and applause.]
That is the sound of a steal! Yes! Gwen Stefani goes all-in! Happy birthday! Yes, ma'am! Whoo! On the 15-year-old, Brennley! Don't do it.
Don't do it.
It's her birthday! Daly: Brennley, come on back.
[Cheers and applause.]
There's another steal! No! No way! Adam Levine uses his steal No! No! No! on Brennley! Oh, my God! Brennley's freaking out.
Obviously Obviously, you're not going with him.
Congratulations, Brennley.
That would be the biggest birthday mistake you'd ever make in your entire Coach, you'll have your time.
Congratulations, Brennley.
You're back on "The Voice"! [Cheers and applause.]
In a big way! I wanted you from the moment that you actually walked out.
It's not just the voice.
With you, it's something more.
It's your spirit, and I think you're really talented, and I just feel an instinct to want to work with you.
That's it.
It's just very honest.
Thank you.
Daly: Thank you, Coach.
Adam.
What I'd like to do right now is leave this crowd.
[Blake laughs.]
And what we should be doing, more importantly than selling ourselves, right? We should be singing "Happy Birthday," right? [Cheers and applause.]
[Clears throat.]
Happy birthday to you Happy birthday to you Happy birthday, dear Brennley [Laughs.]
Happy birthday to you [Cheers and applause.]
I mean Yay! Thank you.
So, that's I'm glad that we got that out of the way.
That was classy.
Happy birthday.
Thank you.
So, here's why you should be on my team.
[Laughter.]
There's so many wonderful ideas that just immediately came into my head about to do, musically, with you, and I just feel like, whatever this is, it's something that I want to be a part of moving forward.
And, you know, if it was Blake, I'd be badmouthing him all day long, but it's not.
It's beautiful, sweet angel Gwen, and I can't I can't fight with her.
I love her too much.
Aww! All right, thank you, coaches.
Brennley, it is up to you.
Oh, my God.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Pick your new coach.
Ohh! [Audience shouting.]
Uh oh, my gosh! Okay.
[Audience shouting.]
Aah! Oh, shoot.
Gosh, this is hard! I think I'm gonna go with This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
Before the break, both Adam and Gwen hit their buttons to steal Brennley Brown.
Now she has to pick her new coach.
Okay, uh [Audience shouting.]
Oh, shoot.
Gosh, this is hard! [Sighs.]
I think I'm gonna go with Gwen.
Gwen Stefani steals Brennley Oh, my gosh! I'm so happy! from Team Blake! Congratulations! Whoo! Oh, my God! Thank you! I'd rather see one of my better artists go to Gwen's team than Adam's team because, you know, Adam is is evil.
She's awesome.
She is awesome.
She is awesome.
Aah! Okay, thank you.
Oh, my gosh! Okay.
[Laughs.]
That just happened! She is the cutest little cutest cutie pie.
She is so She is incredible.
Daly: While Gwen celebrates her first steal, let's meet her adviser five-time Grammy award winner with over 200 million albums sold, pop legend Céline Dion.
I have the real Céline Dion right here.
I'm so honored to have you here.
It's unbelievable how many people love you.
I'm here to learn from you today.
The person that I got to have as my adviser is the one and only Céline Dion.
Her music speaks to the world and transcends all these language barriers.
It's just incredible to be around someone that's been able to touch so many people.
She really is a phenomenon.
My way of seeing this whole thing is that if you give the best of yourself, there's a spot for you.
That's exactly what they need to hear, like, today.
So that means I have to start all over again, what I just said? Yes.
[Laughs.]
Céline: What I like about "The Voice" is that I get to be stunned by amazing talents.
But this is the new generation, so we really have to take responsibility as mentors to give them some tools.
[As Elvis.]
Thank you very much.
Daly: Now let's look at Gwen's first battle pair 30-year-old JChosen from Albany, Georgia, versus 30-year-old Kenny P from Cleveland, Ohio.
Yee-haw! Oh my God.
Hi! Hi.
I'm Céline.
How are you? [Giggles.]
[Laughter.]
It was so special to see Ms.
Céline Dion.
She's one of the greats.
Let me feel your pulse for a second.
Okay, you're okay.
She's an amazing vocalist, and to be coached and advised by two legends in the business Oh, my heart's beating fast.
I'm speechless about it.
Are you okay? I'm just wowed right now.
That's awesome.
Before the blind auditions, I worked with special-needs kids, and being a new dad, the stakes couldn't be hairier for me because I know my son is back home rooting for his dad.
Baaaaaaaaaaaaby Getting four chairs to turn was like a dream come true.
Marvin Gaye is in Heaven like What I heard was just true talent.
I'd love to work with you.
Gwen.
Are you serious?! Kenny P: I come from a very musical family.
My dad plays the banjo and sings.
My grandpa plays the button box.
Now I'm a full-time musician, six days a week, but I'm ready to take it to the next level.
And you-ou-ou-ou You know that I'd be with you if I could You know those guys that push the boats in Italy? With that mustache and with your voice, you could make a fortune.
There's something theatrical about you.
I'd love to work with you.
I pick Gwen.
What?! Gwen: I paired JChosen and Kenny P because when they sing, they just have that realness to them.
I was born in Little Rock The song that I gave them was "I Was Made to Love Her" by Stevie Wonder.
The lyrics in this song have so much personality and soulfulness.
I just wanted them to have a song where they could really both shine.
I wore hightop shoes and and shirttails JChosen: The most nerve-racking thing about this is singing a song in front of these legends.
It's intimidating.
J, I felt that you were a little bit restricted.
You kind of, like, tumbled a little bit on one word.
I felt you a little bit stuck into your own body.
Yes, ma'am.
You have a beautiful body.
[Laughter.]
Thank you.
Or should I say that in French? [Laughs.]
[Speaks French.]
No, but I was happy that you kind of, like, re-took the song Yes, ma'am.
and kept going.
Yes, ma'am.
You can call me Céline.
You're so polite.
Thank you so much, but call me Céline.
Just let completely loose.
Like, don't worry that it's me and Céline.
I know it's crazy.
You're Céline Dion.
No, no, no.
No.
You're Gwen.
Like okay.
You cannot be good all the time.
You have to be good when it's time.
Mm.
So today, it's okay.
JChosen is so talented, but today I saw that nervous side that I wasn't expecting.
Kenny, your head voice is so strong! It's unbelievable.
Remember, because it's a duet, take your time, then you do yours.
Don't try to overkill the other one.
Let him finish, and then you say, "What about you, baby?" [Laughs.]
Kenny P: J's voice is very different from mine.
I got a lot of power, he's got a lot of control.
I think I'm gonna really have to work hard to take him in this battle.
I think the song is perfect because it's the soul side, it's the rock side, and you need to figure out how you're gonna make this song come alive together.
I was made to love her I was made to live for her Gwen: JChosen was a four-chair turn.
His voice is gorgeous, but I have the sneaky suspicion that he's holding back something, and Kenny P really showed us that he could tackle this song and make it his own.
He's that good of a singer.
Oh, my Gosh! [Laughs.]
Where's the red button? [Laughter.]
I don't know what I'm gonna do between the two at this point.
I really look forward to seeing what happens tomorrow when we work with the band.
Today's gonna be all about trying to figure out stage.
I want to go to the next level so we can just see you play and work the room and use your body language a little more.
My baby loves me My baby needs me You can just go you can do this.
And at one point, you can do this.
Come back.
Intimidate the crowd.
Get close.
My favorite thing about this show is watching people grow right before your eyes.
All through thick and thin Our love just won't end 'Cause I love my baby Love my baby Yeeeeeeaaah Great job, but his head voice is a little stronger, so if you go Yeeeah and it's not strong enough, you better go Ohhh Or Whoo, ba-ba-baby Bring the Marvin Gaye in there.
Got you.
When he's singing, look at him a little bit and perform for the crowd a little bit.
Okay.
Even if this mountain tumbles Yeah! Gwen: JChosen, when he came in today, he seemed a lot more relaxed, showing his personality more.
My baby loves me Kenny P, he's one of my favorites on my team.
He has such a real style to his voice.
This definitely is gonna be a heartbreaker for me.
I tried so hard to get undressed [Laughter.]
for you to look at us.
But honestly, you did an amazing job.
Céline, I got you! Look at how much joy that this woman brings into the room.
I've never been around anyone like you, and I'm so happy for this time.
Sweet.
Thank you.
But I literally don't know what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna have to pray.
That's the only choice at this point.
Daly: Coming up, Gwen's team leaves it all on the stage.
Our love just won't end 'Cause I love my baby I love my baby Aaaaaaaah [Cheers and applause.]
And later This is about seizing that moment.
Two stars in the sky.
God! Oh, my God! [Laughs.]
I know where we're about to go.
But we got to go to work.
the best advisers in "Voice" history help take the artists to the next level.
Tip on the tightrope We've got a steal! [Cheers and applause.]
Daly: Now, a "Behind The Voice" moment.
When I was singing the "Titanic" and they got me the big "Titanic" heart it was like 200 carats or something, I have no idea there was a a lot of bodyguards.
I'm like, "Oh, my God.
I'm gonna win.
" [Laughter.]
"There's a lot of bodyguards backstage.
" They were guarding the heart.
Oh, they didn't give it to you? No, unfortunately.
What? Yeah, exactly.
"I wear it, you give it" We should start that thing.
[Laughter.]
You know? Daly: For more, go to nbc.
com/behindthevoice.
Sponsored by Toyota.
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
It's the night of their battle, and JChosen and Kenny are ready to go head-to-head.
All right, y'all.
Gwen is up next.
I'm so excited! I think I have a lot of good people on my team.
They're gonna be great.
I just don't know who I'm gonna pick.
I need some help! [Laughs.]
JChosen: I want to win this battle for my son.
It would prove to him you can do whatever you want to do in life.
Daly: JChosen! [Cheers and applause.]
Kenny P: This is the biggest opportunity I've ever had.
Daly: Kenny P! Whoo! I'm gonna have to show America and the world what I really got.
[Cheers and applause.]
[Laughs.]
This battle begins right now.
Hey, hey, hey I was born in Little Rock Had a childhood sweetheart We were always hand in hand Whoa I wore hightop shoes and shirttails Mmm Suzy was in pigtails I knew I loved her even then You know my papa disapproved it Ooh Mama, she boo-hooed it But I told her time and time again Don't you know that I was made to love her? Build my world around her Hey, hey, hey She's been my inspiration Ooh Showed appreciation For the love I gave her through the years Like a sweet magnolia tree Ooh My love blossomed tenderly My life grew sweeter through the years I know that my baby loves me My baby needs me Ooh That's why we made it through the years I was made to love her Ooh Worship and adore her Hey, hey, hey All through thick and thin Our love just won't end 'Cause I love my baby I love my baby Aaaaaaaah Oh! My baby loves me My baby needs me And I ain't goin' nowhere I was knee-high to a chicken When that love bug bit me, yeah I had the fever with each passing year Even if this mountain tumbles If this whole world crumbles By her side, I'll still be standing there Ohhhhh 'Cause I was made to love her I will live by her Hey, hey, hey Yeah Hey, hey Heeeeey Oooooh Gwen: Oh! Daly: Give it up JChosen, Kenny P, in a battle for Team Gwen! Whoo! Excellent battle.
This is gonna be a tough one, Gwen.
Adam, what do you want to add to that? I wanted you on my team, JChosen! [Laughter.]
I love what you do, I love how you do what you do.
I think you have an incredible way of performing, and you're a great singer.
Kenny, I did not turn around for you, but I love this show because it always is a beautiful surprise when you become a fan of someone that you might not have understood in the first, you know, 90 seconds that you heard.
You're great, man.
Thank you.
You guys are both, to me, dead even.
Great job, you guys.
Thank you, Coach Adam.
Blake Shelton.
J his voice is so smooth.
About anything you think of, you're capable of singing.
[Sighs.]
I hate you for that, actually, now that I think about it.
[Laughter.]
And then Kenny has an edginess to his voice that I think's really cool, too, you know? I don't know what I would do if I was you right now.
Thanks for nothing, Blake.
Thank you, Blake.
Alicia.
Kenny, you totally blew a hole in what anybody thought might have happened on that stage, and I thought that was very exciting.
and I love those kind of high falsettos, and I love the dance that y'all did.
I really enjoyed the camaraderie.
All right, Alicia.
But, Gwen, you, of course, have the final decision.
[Groans.]
I just regret putting you guys together.
Kenny, you're so natural.
I feel like you really know who you are and what kind of music you want to make, and I think there's something really special and powerful about that.
With J, during rehearsals, you seemed kind of nervous.
Today, I was trying to look for that, and all of that was gone.
I did not know what I was gonna do.
I still kind of don't know what I'm gonna do.
What What do I do? Adam? [Laughter.]
Gwen, who's the winner of this battle? [Groans.]
[Audience shouting.]
Wow.
Okay.
Carson I'm literally just gonna follow my heart right here, and I am going to say the winner of this battle is J.
JChosen is gonna move on to the Knockouts congratulations representing Team Gwen.
[Cheers and applause.]
J, once he got onstage, all his personality was coming out.
He's a front runner on my team because of his vocal ability and his presence onstage.
I just love that.
Nice job.
JChosen: I feel great.
I'm so excited to continue this journey with Gwen.
She saw something in me.
Man, I'm going to Knockouts, and I'm so ready.
[Chuckles.]
Coaches, let me remind you Kenny is available to steal.
I love you! Kenny, anything you want to say to Gwen? Well, I just had a ton of fun doing this.
And I don't know.
Thank you.
Thanks a lot.
You are so talented.
I'm blown away by you.
Thank you.
Give it up for Kenny P, ladies and gentlemen.
[Cheers and applause.]
I'm sorry.
That's all right.
I hate this.
You're so incredible.
I didn't push for Kenny, just because he's not exactly what I'm looking for on my team, but I thought that they both performed with so much, just, energy and joy, and I really loved it.
Man: I love you, Alicia! Hey, thank you.
I love you, too.
Hey, man, what about me?! Thank you.
[Cheers and applause.]
Just had to take all the attention.
That's why he dyed his hair blond.
That's not Adam.
That's Ellen.
[Laughter.]
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
Now let's check in with Alicia and her adviser Grammy-nominated mega-producer DJ Khaled.
Welcome to "The Voice," DJ Khaled.
This is special, sitting with an icon like you.
Thank you.
And you know we friends and we fam, but, you know, I'm excited to always hear new talent.
Alicia: Khaled His music is exploding everywhere.
He's a producer, he's a curator, he's a deejay.
I think that type of energy is something to really learn from.
Teamwork, you know? We doing teamwork.
Yeah.
Can't be mad at it.
I really love "The Voice" because me coming up in the game, I ain't never had this opportunity.
This is your chance to get everybody's attention at one time.
There's no excuse.
Whoo! That's right.
That's how today's going.
Daly: Let's meet Alicia's first battle pair 16-year-old Anatalia Villaranda from Temecula, California, versus 34-year-old Missy Robertson from Sacramento, California.
Anatalia: I'm 16 years old and I'm 4'9", but good things come in small packages.
Growing up, she was a handful.
[Laughter.]
Run, run, run away Run away, baby Before I put my spell on you There it is! That's all of them right there! This is more than just a voice.
This is an artist unafraid! I'm gonna have to pick Alicia Keys.
[Screaming.]
[Cheers and applause.]
What?! The light that shines withi-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-n Where did you get this voice? My dad's a pastor, so I just grew up singing in church every Sunday.
Currently, I work with people who have disabilities.
I help them find jobs.
If you're given a gift like that, to have a message to spread with it.
That's what I'd love to help you continue to do as your coach.
I pick Alicia.
All right! [Cheers and applause.]
Alicia: I paired Anatalia and Missy together because they both have these powerful voices.
There's Anatalia.
Hi! Missy, this is DJ Khaled.
How you doing? Our adviser is DJ Khaled! Hello.
I am so stoked.
He's worked with Jay-Z, John Legend, Drake, Kanye West, and I can't believe I get to work with him now.
So cool.
And I'm still tippin' on it See, I'm not walkin' on it Or tryin' to run around it Alicia: "Tightrope" by Janelle Monae has all this energy that I do know that they both have.
[Vocalizing.]
When you're singing one note, it's so easy to be sharp or flat, and they're doing an incredible job.
I'm high or low Yeah! DJ Khaled: You got to have super swag for that song.
And Missy surprised me.
She came, like, aggressive with it.
Like, she was like, "This is what I do.
" And I was like, "All right, girl.
Do your thing.
" Oh, my God! Yaaaaaay! Aah! That right there, that was vibes.
That was so much fun! Let me shoot the video, set up a tour.
You know what I mean? Let's get it cracking.
I'm feeling it already.
The only thing I would say for this point, since y'all just went "Still tippin' on it," don't do the second run, so you can get right back to it.
Then it's strong.
T-T-T-Tippin' on the tightrope Missy: Yeah, yeah.
Tightrope Anatalia I was super-impressed.
She's so alive and so vibrant.
That's really incredible.
It is absolutely gonna be a tough decision for me.
DJ Khaled: This song is so incredible.
I'm feeling it already.
You know what I'm saying? But when you hit that stage, explode.
[Laughs.]
Let's get that outfit ready.
Yes.
High or low Tippin' on the tightrope Tippin' on the tightrope Whether I'm high or low You got me tippin' on the tightrope DJ Khaled: I respect any artist that can take direction and add more that we didn't even know about.
They did it.
[Applause.]
Nice! Being a deejay and a producer, I can really appreciate executing it.
Love it.
I like seeing you get up like that.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You got to have a lot of energy to sing that song.
Mm-hmm.
'Cause when I see an artist, I got to see it and feel it and believe it, you know what I mean? Right.
Fun song, tons of energy, but it can stay on this level right here if you let it.
Mm.
So, if I got one moment for each of y'all where Anatalia got a little quieter and then we crept it up, and then Missy, you get elevated like, "Break it down!" Yeah.
That sounds cool.
I tip on alligators Missy: It was really cool to see her produce the song, like, really break the song down and kind of, like, make it fit us.
That's the spot.
Yeah, that's the spot.
And then that requires to build back up, which is another exciting thing.
Baby, whether you're high or low Maybe Anatalia should say "Break it down," because you're doing the killer run.
Tippin' on the tightrooooooooooope And then you're getting two seconds for breath, and then you're in.
Break it down now.
I tip on alligators Alicia: Anatalia has one thing she's really rocking the rhythm.
Like a Terminator Missy is really adding this flair to it.
If I had to say right now, it is looking pretty neck-to-neck.
Finish! Whoo! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
[Cheers and applause.]
Anatalia Villaranda versus Missy Robertson! [Cheers and applause.]
Let the battle begin.
Whoa Another day I take your pain away Some people talk about you like they know all about you When you get down, they doubt you And when you tippin' on the scene Yeah, they talkin' 'bout it 'Cause they can't tip on the scene What you talkin' 'bout it? T-T-T-Talkin' 'bout it When you get elevated, they love it or they hate it You dance up on them haters Keep gettin' funky on the scene While they jump around you They try to take all your dreams But you can't allow it 'Cause, baby, whether I'm high or low Whether I'm high or low You gotta tip on the tightrope T-T-T-Tip on the tightrope Baby, baby, whether I'm High or low Whether I'm High or low Tip on the tightrope Now let me see you tightrope And I'm still tippin' on it See, I'm not walkin' on it Or tryin' to run around it This ain't no acrobatics You either follow or you lead Yeah, I'm talkin' 'bout you I keep on blamin' the machine Yeah, I'm talkin' 'bout it T-T-T-Talkin' 'bout it I can't complain about it I gotta keep my balance And just keep dancin' on it We gettin' funky on the scene Yeah, you know about it Like a star on the screen Now watch me tip all on it Now, now, now, whether I'm High or low Whether I'm High or low You got to tip on the tightrope Tip on the tightrope Baby, baby, whether I'm High or low Whether I'm High or low Tip on the tightrooope Let me see you tightrope Now break it down, now.
I tip on alligators And little rattlesnakers But I'm another flavor Somethin' like a Terminator Ain't no equivocatin' I fight for what I believe Why you talkin' 'bout it? Now, now, now, whether I'm high or low High or low Tippin' on the tightrope Tippin' on the tightrooooooope Now, now, now, whether I'm high or low High or looooooooow T-T-T-Tightroooooope [Cheers and applause.]
Yeah! Daly: Anatalia and Missy Team Alicia! Whoo! Congratulations, Coach.
Super-fun to watch.
Thank you.
That was electric.
Gwen.
First of all, I'm shocked, because this tiny, little doll like, a little baby, like [Cheers and applause.]
You're a firecracker, and it's so fun to watch you, and I get so inspired on this show.
It's crazy! I love this place.
And then you're over here all of a sudden, putting these notes in that I didn't expect, and I think you're super-talented.
Very, very talented.
Thank you.
Thank you, Gwen.
Adam.
It was like a whole two-hour concert packed into two minutes.
[Laughter.]
Anatalia, I'm not convinced that you're not a wind-up toy.
Do you ever run track? I feel like you're the fastest person in the world.
No, I don't.
You're just fast.
Everything's "Whew!" And also amazing, and that's that's what make it hard, Missy, is that you are like the anchor here because you're actually, like, I can see you and, like, you're not just a blur that's running across the stage.
Sorry.
What I hope doesn't get lost on you guys is how good Missy is, because this is "The Voice," and you have a tremendous voice.
I might be, in this moment, more attracted to what you were doing, Missy.
Thank you.
That performance that you guys delivered is worthy of any Grammy stage.
[Cheers and applause.]
Thank you.
Thank you.
And Anatalia's actually the size of a Grammy right now.
So she's just, like, this perfect little Grammy angel.
[Laughs.]
You're so talented, and you're very flashy.
It's hard to not pay attention to you when you're onstage.
And that's why I'm glad Missy stopped, and she was like, "I'm about to sing some stuff that you guys are gonna pay attention to, damn it.
" It was undeniable.
[Applause.]
Thank you.
Daly: All right, thank you, Coach.
Alicia, walk us through it.
This was really exciting.
Absolutely, you're different.
There was almost a pocket that Anatalia has, and, Missy, there was a real beautiful, powerful voice that came out of you.
You're both really incredible.
I love how this ended up.
Unh! [Laughs.]
Alicia, who is the winner of this battle? The winner of this battle [Audience shouting.]
is Anatalia.
Anatalia, congratulations.
You're moving on to the Knockout rounds.
[Cheers and applause.]
[Laughing.]
Yeah! I have no words right now.
I just walked What? [Gasps.]
I'm so excited right now.
Coaches, let me remind you, Missy is available to steal.
[Audience shouting "Steal!".]
Missy, anything you'd like to say to Alicia, please? Alicia, thank you so much.
This whole experience has been just mind-blowing.
Big thank you to Missy Robertson.
Adam: I didn't steal Missy 'cause I'm just still looking for that one that I can't let get away.
Thank you so much.
Alicia: Missy just killed, but I think that Anatalia's totally like a female Bruno Mars.
She has a stage presence, she has an incredible vocal style.
She's not a girl you've seen before, and I love that.
[Both laughing.]
Good job.
I want to cry.
I wouldn't really be here if it wasn't for her.
She's made so many sacrifices for me.
I'm so thankful.
Your glasses are fogging up.
Daly: Coming up, John Legend shows two artists how it's done.
[Vocalizing.]
Yeah! And later I am titaniuuuum Daly: A double steal! Make it three! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
What color is that? Is that puce? What color is that? Alicia: What? Puce? No, I'm looking at your hair.
Like a like a white-ish blond.
With a little brown underneath.
You look like Zack Morris from "Saved By the Bell.
" [Gasps.]
I used to love Zack Morris.
Gwen: Yeah.
The more you know.
Daly: While our coaches get ready, let's check in with Adam and his adviser Oscar and 10-time Grammy award winner John Legend.
So happy that I get to do this with my buddy.
Yeah.
We're gonna have fun.
Yes, sir.
John's talent is so tremendous.
He's really been able to pour who he is into his work.
It reaches into other aspects of entertainment, and that's why I think he's so successful and will continue to be for a long time.
First victims? Yeah.
[Claps.]
Send them in! Daly: Let's meet Adam's first battle pairing 22-year-old Gaby Borromeo from New York City versus 19-year-old Mark Isaiah from Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.
Gaby! Oh, my God! [Laughs.]
See, I know Gaby.
Oh, my God.
Gaby: When I walked in to see Adam and our adviser, and it was John Legend, it was incredibly special to me 'cause I actually used to work with him when I was 16, 17 years old.
Years ago, the guy who ran my production company brought Gaby in to play some music for me.
No way.
Small world.
Look at that.
Really small world.
Yes.
Look at this reunion.
"The Voice" bringing people together.
[Laughs.]
Gaby: I was 15 when I moved from Seattle, Washington, to New York City.
I was writing and recording a lot, and even though it didn't work out with John Legend, I wouldn't trade that for the world, because I've learned a ton from that experience.
For the past six months, I have been waiting on tables, and I've found a love of music again from taking that break.
Got to find my place I want to hear my sound You are unbelievable, and you belong on my team.
[Cheers and applause.]
Adam: Gaby's voice is compelling.
There's something that you can sink your teeth into.
She's right there on the precipice.
Mark: Growing up, I was always really into music, but I was overweight, and it was just a really hard time for me.
When I was 14 years old, I won this Justin Bieber contest.
Made me rethink, you know, what I was thinking about myself.
So my blind audition was the chance to show America what I've got.
Please have mercy on me Your voice sounds so modern.
It sounds like radio.
It's so obvious that you belong in the current landscape of pop music.
I'm gonna have to pick Adam.
Yeah! [Cheers and applause.]
Adam: I paired Gaby and Mark together because they're young and they're so passionate.
It feels right.
Climb on board We'll go slow "Pillowtalk" is a very romantic, sexy song.
They are the perfect people to do this.
We'll piss off the neighbors John: Gaby sounded really good.
I always thought she was talented, and it was cool to see her.
She's, like, grown up now.
Very nice.
When I start the chorus, like Neighbors I don't, like, know whether I throw it away or, like, go down.
Neigh-bors So we'll piss off the neigh-bors Yes! Yeah.
Sliding off of it is good because it implies, like, a certain passion and, like, emotion.
Okay.
'Cause the song is about a bit of a dark situation, you might want to push yourself, Gaby, to be a little raspier.
Like, take a little bit of the sweetness off of it.
Okay.
Gaby: I have a bubbly personality, but the song is this couple battling, and so I have to keep it raw.
The straining and the breath control and the stuff that I was hearing a tiny bit of in both of you guys is literally, like, a mental tweak.
It's all [clicks tongue.]
right here.
I want you to try to sing this song better than you've ever done in your entire lives right now, because that's the only thing standing in your way.
You're right.
Yeah.
Is just total self-confidence, really.
So we'll piss off the neighbors Mark: I struggled with confidence in my past, and I'm scared of messing up in front of people.
Reckless behavior But Adam is pushing me to just go for it because it's all in my mind.
It's our paradise And it's our war zone You're both so exceptional in that upper part of your voices that we'd be doing you a disservice if we didn't say that is the one area that could be somewhat improved for the both of you, so it's actually interesting we have the same exact note.
Adam: I just want Gaby and Mark to have the confidence in themselves.
If I can instill that in them, then I've done my job.
bed all day Bed all day, bed all day Gaby and Mark came in ready and prepared and sounding very good.
Paradise But singing it as a duet, there was this weird kind of in-between moment in the song.
War zone It seemed like it was kind of meandering.
We got to figure out that middle.
Yeah.
It does get lost when it just turns into silence.
Paradise Paradise Love that.
Paradise, paradise [Vocalizing.]
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah! So, a big stop there.
Sing it again.
Paradise Paradise Paradise Paradise War zone War zone War No We'll piss off the neighbors Having vocal lessons from John Legend and Adam Levine is incredible, and my confidence has definitely gotten better.
And it's a war zone Sounds awesome! John: I think you guys are really executing it well, and I feel like you are really harmonizing well together.
The harmonies are beautiful.
It gives me warm and fuzzies.
Adam: Mark could be on the radio tomorrow.
Really talented guy.
And Gaby is unafraid to be who she is, which I think is a huge thing.
Hugs! John: Adam's gonna have a really difficult choice.
I do not envy him.
I'm glad I don't have to make this choice.
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Gaby Borromeo versus Mark Isaiah! The battle starts right now.
Climb on board We'll go slow and high tempo Light and dark Hold me hard and mellow I'm seeing the pain, seeing the pleasure Nobody but you, 'body but me Whoo! 'Body but us, bodies together Oh, I love him.
Oh I'd love to hold you close Tonight and always I'd love to wake up next to you I'd love to hold you close Tonight and always I'd love to wake up next to you So we'll piss off the neighbors In the place that feels the tears The place to lose your fears Reckless behavior Oh, in a place that is so pure So dirty and raw In the bed all day Bed all day, bed all day Loving in, fighting on It's our paradise and it's our war zone It's our paradise And it's our war zone Paradise Paradise Paradise Paradise War zone War zone War zone War zone Paradise Paradise Paradise Paradise War zone War zoooooone So we'll piss off the neighbors In the place that feels the tears The place to lose your fears Reckless behavior Oh, in a place that is so pure So dirty and raw In the bed all day Bed all day, bed all day Loving in, fighting on It's our paradise and it's our war zone It's our paradise And it's our war zone [Cheers and applause.]
Daly: Give it up for Gaby and Mark in the battle for Team Adam! You're so good.
You did so good.
Yeah! That was nice.
[Howling.]
All right, Blake Shelton, we'll start with you, cowboy.
Wow, that was so good.
And, Gaby, it's funny.
We were looking at old pictures of Alicia and Gwen together, and I think in one of those pictures, Gwen may have had blue or purple hair in that picture, so I've been going, "Oh, this is Gwen's team.
" Then it's like, "Oh, that's Adam's team.
Oh, my God.
" Well, we like weird-looking hair on my team.
[Laughter.]
Ha! I made the joke before you did.
That blow your mind? [Laughter.]
Alicia: [Laughing.]
Oh, my God! One step ahead of you, Shelton.
[Laughs.]
Anyway Mark, it feels like that was probably something that you were very comfortable singing, or at least you made it seem that way.
And, Gaby, you, too, but Mark really had, I think, a grasp on the syncopation of that song, and it just felt like you were really feeling what you were singing.
And for that reason, I think I'm probably leaning more towards Mark in that battle.
Fair enough.
Thank you, Coach.
Alicia.
This is definitely a tricky one.
You both performed very well.
It's more about what Adam is looking for to fill his team.
Do you want that powerhouse female vocalist or do you want a male vocalist that's a little bit smoother? Y'all did really good.
I thought it showcased a lot for the both of you.
Alicia, thank you.
Gwen, you want to help Adam out? As soon as you came in, Mark, I remembered you.
Like, I was, "Oh! Oh, yeah!" I looked at Adam, I was like, "I love that guy!" I think you're really special, and you really owned that one.
Like, I could see that being your record, no problem.
Like, I'm a fan of you already just from the moment that you started singing.
Thank you.
Gaby, you look stunning.
Alicia: Yes.
Your voice is so beautiful.
Some of those high notes were so pretty, and it was just the whole package, and I thought you did great.
I was leaning towards Mark, but both incredible.
Daly: All right.
Adam, you've got the final decision.
You guys had a lot of great chemistry.
You're both great singers, really both very dynamic, very different.
But you really fit up there together.
You know, Mark, Gwen talks about reacting the way she did.
You know, there's something about great singing that is hard to explain.
It's just one of those things that when it happens, it happens to you, and you feel it.
And that is a strong, very potent thing.
And then I think about, you know, Gaby, you're stunning, and you sing so beautifully, and that's a valuable and amazing thing to have as an artist.
So this is not an easy thing.
Adam, who's the winner of this battle? Um The winner of this battle is Mark.
Mark, congratulations.
You're moving on to the Knockouts, representing Team Adam! Adam: Mark's voice gives you comfort.
It's a special voice.
I think he can do a lot of different things.
We'll have to just explore it.
Thank you, guys.
Love you.
Thank you.
This is a miracle.
Oh, my God, thank you.
Oh, my goodness.
This is incredible.
My dreams are coming true.
My dreams are really coming true.
Coaches, let me remind you that Gaby is available to steal.
Gaby, anything you'd like to say to your coach? Thank you for turning around that first time, when I had zero confidence.
Oh, of course.
I mean, you're wonderful.
I-I This is not easy.
Big hand, ladies and gentlemen, to Gaby Borromeo.
You did so good.
You did so good.
So, so, so good.
Don't give this up.
Keep at it.
I know you've heard "no" a lot, but keep going.
Nice job, Gaby.
[Cheers and applause.]
That kid's really good.
He's a sleeper.
Blake: He's good.
I think he's really, really special.
He's special.
I want to hear more.
Daly: While Mark advances All right.
Alicia is backstage coaching her next pair.
Before you get up there, remember, just be who you are and go out there and take all the stuff that you have to share and be like, "Raaah!" Raaah! Daly: Coming up Talkin' loud Felicia, you have a way of singing that's very emotional.
I used to sing this song when I was sick.
You are titanium.
I am titanium Daly: And later, find out which artist all three coaches want to steal.
We got a steal! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Alicia: All right, this is my battle.
Are you ready? Girl, I was born ready.
All right.
Alicia's next battle is 28-year-old Felicia Temple from Teaneck, New Jersey, versus 13-year-old Quizz Swanigan from Los Angeles.
Felicia: I've been a nurse for six years, but at this time last year, I was on chemo.
To be deemed cancer-free and to be able to do what I love, there's no greater feeling.
All I wanted was Alicia to turn her chair for me, and when she did, it was insane.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Felicia: It was a dream come true to sing onstage with Alicia.
Who do you pick as your coach? Say it loud, say it proud.
I pick Alicia! Alicia: Felicia is incredible.
Her vocal chops are superb.
Quizz: I portrayed little Michael Jackson and I performed all over the country.
My family made a lot of sacrifices, moving from my hometown in Arkansas to California.
Ohhhhh Oh, my God! Alicia: I knew you were super-young, and I see all this energy inside of you and all this light.
I pick Alicia.
Whoo! Alicia: I paired Quizz and Felicia because they both have very soulful voices, but they're so different from each other that they have the space to be themselves.
Alicia: Quizz.
Ohhh! This is DJ Khaled.
Quizz, I hear great things about you, boy.
Quizz and Felicia.
I am a major fan of DJ Khaled.
That jacket.
Thank you.
I like your jacket, too, bro.
This is something I would wear.
He's just a huge rapper, producer, beatmaker.
He does it all.
You shout it out But I can't hear a word you say Alicia: This is a song that takes them out of any boxes.
They lean towards R&B but can totally really go anywhere, which is why I chose "Titanium" for them.
Fire at the ones who run Felicia: I love Quizz.
He's so good! It blows my mind that he's 13 years old.
I am going to have to fight every second to make sure I stay.
Titaniuuuuuuuum That's beautiful.
I love that they got confidence.
They do.
That's amazing.
Felicia, you have a way of singing it that's really beautiful, it's very emotional.
You get lost.
You're not even here in the building.
I used to sing this song when I was sick.
That's why I love this song so much.
I was dying to sing this song this season.
Yeah.
That's amazing to hear that you sang that.
But I want to feel your joy because this representing you and your experience is, like, a really powerful statement.
You are titanium.
And for you, Quizz, when you go for that note that you feel like you can't hit, you got to push down.
It's, like, in here.
I promise you, you have that note.
Alicia: Quizz just really needs to work on being able to reach the notes he doesn't know he can reach yet.
He hasn't had experience with the techniques that get you there.
And for her, it's really her connection to herself, her connection to her audience that we're gonna work on.
Titaniuuuuum I see why she paired both of y'all together, 'cause it's like two stars in the sky, you know what I'm saying? And I just feel the energy and the vibe, but I know where we 'bout to go.
Yes.
But we got to go to work now.
Yes.
Now, do you want to do that together? Do you want to do that alone? We're gonna do the harmony.
We're gonna do the harmony? Yeah, we're gonna do the Sure you don't want to hit that You shoot me down You don't want to hit that? No, I'm good.
Not right now.
Quizz: The biggest challenge of this song for me is the high notes because when I was younger, I used to be able to hit those with ease, but now that I'm kind of going through a little transition and a change, it's gonna be tougher for me.
I am titanium Shoot me down But I won't fall I am tita I am tita Smile.
I am tita I am titanium Boy, go sit down somewhere or I'm gonna hurt you.
He's thinking while he's singing.
Quizz Alicia keeps pushing him to say "You got this," and now he's believing that he got it and he's doing it.
Titanium He's a great singer with major potential.
I'm bulletproof, nothin' to lose And Felicia, she's an amazing singer.
I can see from yesterday the notch that went up, and I feel like they're getting it together.
At the very end, I need you earlier, Quizz.
I am titaniuuum Gotcha.
It's just little pieces in the song, I feel like it could be stronger because I hear such great, strong parts.
I'm like, "Man, I want them parts to be over here, too.
" The challenge y'all have is transcending the noise.
It's much simpler to evoke all kinds of emotion when it's just a guitar, it's just a piano.
It's actually much more difficult when there's so much going on Yeah.
so y'all have to work harder than ever to identify what does this song mean to you.
And you have to find a way to make sure we can feel it throughout the whole way, because you're gonna inspire others.
They both have powerhouse voices, very, very soulful.
They just have to show me who really wants it.
This is "The Voice" Daly: It's the night of their battle, and Felicia and Quizz make their way to the stage.
Quizz: I'm the youngest contestant ever, but I want to show people that age is nothing but a number and that I belong on this stage.
My coach is freaking Alicia Keys.
Come on, now.
I don't want to give that up.
Daly: Quizz Swanigan! Felicia: Being sick and having cancer and getting better has more than prepared me for this day.
Daly: Felicia Temple! Felicia: I will prove to people I am really titanium, and I'd like to go home with the "W.
" Whoo! Let the battle begin.
You shout it out But I can't hear a word you say I'm talkin' loud Not saying much Good! I'm criticized But all your bullets ricochet You shoot me down But I get up Yeah! Shoot me down But I won't fall I am titanium Shoot me down But I won't fall I am titaniuuuum Whoa, ohhhh Yeah! I'm bulletproof Nothin' to lose Fire away, fire away Ricochet, you take your aim Fire away, fire away Shoot me down But I won't fall I am titanium You shoot me down But I won't fall I am titaniuuuum Ohhhh, yeah Stone-hard Machine gun Firing at the ones who ruuuuun [Laughs.]
Stone-hard Those bulletproof glaaaass Shoot me down But I won't fall I am titanium Shoot me down But I won't fall I am titaniuuuum I am titaniuuuuuum Ohhhhhhhh I am titaniuuuuum [Cheers and applause.]
Daly: Give it up for Felicia and Quizz! Alicia, tough decision coming up.
Gwen, help her out.
Quizz, you have such a unique, like, tone to your voice, so I kept leaning towards you, and then as the battle was going on, Felicia, your voice, your tone, you're so warm Yeah.
and so, like, round.
I think you're both really talented.
If I had to choose right now, today, right this second, I'd probably have to go with Quizz, just because you're 13 and that blows my mind.
Thank you.
Daly: Thank you, Gwen.
Adam.
Felicia, the only thing that you don't have going for you is that you're not 13 years old, because [Laughter.]
like, you guys are just superduper different.
In this particular scenario, I might actually go with Felicia because I thought there were moments that really tore through, but, Quizz, that is [scoffs.]
you're incredible, as well, so Thank you.
Thank you, Coach Adam.
Blake Shelton.
Quizz, as long as you're on this show, you're going to be constantly reminded that you're 13 years old.
Yeah.
Yes.
Everybody's just, "13! He's 13! 13!" But Felicia has been 13 before, too, and so, you know, that's you know, she did it.
I can't say enough about Felicia's voice.
You can just hear the warmth and that rounder tone that she has.
It's just a more developed voice.
I would have to go with Felicia, just based on what I heard right there.
Blake, thank you.
Coach Alicia, you, of course, have the final decision.
Felicia, I loved seeing your personal triumph and being able to learn about that.
Sometimes as women, we kind of build up this shield to protect ourselves with, and I'd love to see you break that shield down and expose yourself, and I felt that you did that.
Quizz, you have a lot of experience even at such a young age, and your voice is already in such an incredible place, and you're only gonna go farther.
You took direction really well.
So, really, both of you succeeded in an incredible way.
Um it is now the time.
What a hard decision for you.
Alicia, who's the winner of this battle? [Audience shouting.]
The winner of this battle is Quizz.
Quizz is gonna move on to the Knockout rounds, representing Congratulations, baby.
Team Alicia! [Cheers and applause.]
Nice job, Quizz.
Alicia: I chose Quizz because he has an innocence and a vocal prowess that's just undeniable.
[Cheers and applause.]
I'm just so grateful that all this hard work has just paid off.
Coaches, let me remind you, Felicia is available to steal.
[Audience shouting "Steal!".]
Felicia, anything you'd like to say to your coach? I just want to say it has been the privilege of my life to work with you.
Mm.
Thank you so much.
Ladies and gentlemen, big thank-you to Felicia Temple.
[Cheers and applause.]
Daly: We've got a steal! [Cheers and applause.]
Yes! Let's go! Wow! Blake Shelton comes in with the drama! [Laughs.]
There you go.
[Laughs.]
What was it about Felicia, Blake? What's it not about Felicia, you know? [Cheers and applause.]
I think Frosty down here said it best when [Laughter.]
he said the only thing that she didn't have going for her is that she's not 13, and it's just you know, there's no reason that she can't win this thing.
I want to keep her in the competition.
Thank you so much.
Felicia, go see your new coach, Blake Shelton! [Cheers and applause.]
I stole Felicia because there is nobody else like Felicia on my team, and that's a good thing.
Alicia: Yeah, Blake! Yeah, Blake.
I'm overwhelmed, but I feel great.
Happy tears.
You're so good.
Thank you so much.
My team just went from here to here because of you, so thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Awesome.
Off to a good start.
Nice.
Like this show.
That's one down.
I got one.
[Cheers and applause.]
I am titaniuuum Daly: You can buy full versions of tonight's battle performances on iTunes I'll still be standing there Daly: or listen to them on Apple Music.
Coming up What you want to do here is give a performance that the other coaches can't live without.
No pressure.
Yeah, no pressure.
[Laughs.]
Daly: That is a steal! Yes! Whoo-hoo! This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back to the battles.
Let's meet Blake's final pairing of the night 23-year-old Ashley Levin from Miami versus 26-year-old Casi Joy from Nashville.
I feel, like, not polite by making them open the door.
It's, like, against my raising.
Your instincts are correct.
You're not polite.
[Both gasping, laughing.]
Howdy! Both: Oh, my goodness! Casi: It's super special that it's Luke Bryan as our adviser because he is country.
They kept it a secret? And his song "I Don't Want This Night to End" is gonna be the song that I walk down the aisle to on my wedding day.
It was just really cool.
This is Luke Bryan, by the way.
Yeah.
No way.
No way.
Let's do this.
He's a new country singer trying to make it in Nashville.
I hope you do well.
Blake's been bragging on you guys.
Ooh.
He said your auditions were pretty good.
Incredible.
See, now he's nervous in front of us.
See? [Laughs.]
I love you.
I love you back.
Ashley: My dad is 76, and he has early-onset Alzheimer's, so having to move away to Nashville to pursue my dream, it was really difficult.
I'm gonna let him fly I heard bluesiness in there, so much soul inside of you.
Country music is a sacred thing.
I would hate to see you become an experiment.
I pick Blake.
Yes! Casi: I have been living in Nashville for almost two years now.
I'm playing just for tips, so there's definitely a financial struggle.
I love you.
I'm glad you're here.
And my fiancé, Bryan, he's just always been really supportive.
"The Voice" is my chance to really stand out.
[Yodeling.]
Blue The yodeling it's the craziest thing I've ever heard.
The fact that you have already mastered that I am not giving up until Casi is on my team.
I pick Blake.
Yes! Casi and Ashley have a classic country sound to their voice.
There's really only one spot on my team for that type of artist.
How blue Can you make me? How long Blake: "How Blue" by Reba is perfect for either one of the two of them.
They've got that storytelling factor about them.
It's gonna be an incredible performance.
Oh, wow.
Oh, honey The thing that I love about Ashley's voice is the power.
She commands the attention of the room.
I swear to you that I'm dyin' Casi's voice is that classic country sound that reminds me of a Tammy Wynette.
I love that about her.
How blue can I feel? Your last note I mean, you holding that out and you playing with the notes, I mean, it's complementing, and the front is unbelievable.
Don't you agree, the a cappella deal? Mm-hmm.
But here's what I think.
The way that Reba's version of the song is structured How blue, how blue can you make me? I think that works leaving it that way because it gives you both more opportunity just to have the spotlight on you, you know what I mean? Can we hear that with the answers in the a cappella opening? Just see what happens? Sure.
How blue How blue Ashley: Casi and I, we both have a similar vibe when it comes to the style of country we sing and how we sing it.
In order for me to stand out from her, I have to put my own spin on the parts when I'm by myself.
Can I feel? You did your big note on your line "If I cry any more, I'll go blind.
" When you hit the "blind" Yeah.
you know, you're just not catching the front of that word.
You're not gonna hurt yourself, in my opinion, by just really doing the line as it is really solid and great.
What you want to do here, really, is give a performance that the other coaches can't live without, and if you do that together, nobody goes home.
This is gonna be a good performance, and it's gonna be a sick, sick feeling that I'm gonna have when I have to make this decision.
Y'all just know what you're doing when it comes to singing, so this is about seizing that moment.
No pressure.
Yeah, no pressure.
We just have to be everyone's favorite.
Totally fine.
[Laughs.]
No, there ain't no relief For this "missin' you" grief How long can you torture my mind? Something that you're both guilty of mostly Casi I would turn down the growl stuff, 'cause there's a finesse to this song.
It can come off as a little bit abrasive.
Casi: I've got to let my personality shine through, but less is more with a traditional country song.
How blue How blue Can you make me? Boy, that's perfection.
How long till I heal? Just the way you're bending harmonies, I was like [growls.]
That's awesome.
You keep doing things to pull in front of one another in the song, and that's a good thing in the end to gang up.
I feel like this is probably my toughest battle.
Like, just toe-to-toe Hey, you did this to yourself.
You did it to yourself.
Yes, you did.
Just makes me so mad.
Luke: Honestly, I don't know who's gonna win.
I'm a little scared to go out there and say, but those girls live in Nashville.
They may come hunt me down.
[Laughs.]
Bye, girls.
Daly: Coming up It was, like, bona fide battle status.
That was a boxing match posing as a singing competition.
[Laughter.]
Daly: That is a double steal! Make it three! I will wear you down.
Is he finished? That's a lot of talking.
Every single word relevant.
Thanks, Ellen.
[Laughter.]
So good.
This is "The Voice" Daly: Welcome back.
It's the night of their battle, and Ashley and Casi are about to face off.
You're next, Blakey.
Yeah, and I still don't know what I'm gonna do there.
They're both really good.
Ashley: I would love to win this battle for my dad.
He said, "Ashley Bear, just sing well for me.
" So just knowing that, like, he's rooting for me is awesome.
Daly: Ashley Levin! [Cheers and applause.]
I'm gonna sing like it's the last time I'm gonna sing.
Casi: I was recently engaged, and my fiancé has always been so supportive of my music.
I definitely want to validate to him that everything was worth it.
Daly: Casi Joy! I need to win this battle.
[Cheers and applause.]
The battle starts now.
[Note plays.]
How blue How blue Can you make me? How long till I heal? How can I go on lovin' you when you're gone? How blue How blue Can I feel? Oh, honey, oh, why did you leave me? Ain't you got a heart left in your chest? Well, I swear to you that I'm dying 'Cause my mind won't let my body rest How blue How blue Can you make me? How long till I heal? How can I go on lovin' you when you're gone? How blue How blue Can I feel? 'Cause if I sink any lower, I'll go under And if I cry any more, I'll go blind No, there ain't no relief for this "missin' you" grief How long can you torture my mind? How blue How blue Can you make me? How long till I heal? How can I go on lovin' you when you're gone? How blue How blue Can I feel? How blue How blue Can I feel? How blue How blue How blue Ooooooh Can I Feeeeeeeeeeeeel? Wow! [Cheers and applause.]
Daly: Give it up for Ashley and Casi in a battle for Team Blake! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Alicia Keys, let's get some comments from you.
It was, like, bona fide battle status.
Oh, yeah.
You know what I mean? Oh, yeah.
They were coming for it.
That was a boxing match, like, posing as a singing competition.
[Laughter.]
Which is good.
Casi, you have such a very vibrant, vivacious energy, and, Ashley, there's a bit more reserve inside of you, but I have a feeling that there's an outpouring that's just waiting to pour.
Oh, it is.
This is really, really tough, and I don't feel good for you.
That's my advice.
That's your input? That's what you got? Oh, thanks.
[Laughter.]
All right, we'll move on down the line.
Gwen.
Both of your voices are so beautiful.
Casi, I feel like you're a little bit more seasoned.
There's just something professional about you, but if you want to go with someone that just needs a little bit of help as far as, like, stage presence goes, then she has a beautiful, beautiful voice.
All right, thank you very much, Gwen.
Adam.
You're both big-time, like, singers here.
I don't know how you wound up in the same pairing.
That probably has something to do with Dum-Dum.
[Laughter.]
But, Ashley, I thought you came out today and you might've taken it.
Thanks, Ellen.
[Laughter.]
So good.
I told you girls from the second I heard you singing together I wish I hadn't put you together, but at the end of the day, I almost have to, because to me, we need to get those two artists out of each other's lane, and I think you're both so talented that I pray, I hope that everybody stays on the show, 'cause it's undeniable how badly the other coaches want to beat me with a country artist.
I'll beat you with anything, really.
I could beat you with a shovel, I'll beat you with a [Laughter.]
Violent.
Alicia: Right.
Violent.
[Southern accent.]
Violent.
Blake, tough decision.
Who is the winner of this battle? I think, in this case, I have to just kind of go with a gut feeling.
Uh The winner of this battle was Casi.
[Cheers and applause.]
Casi Joy moves on to the Knockouts congratulations representing Team Blake! Blake: I ultimately went with Casi because she just has this electric energy when she's onstage.
Great job.
Thank you so much.
The unique things that Casi can do vocally, I want to continue to explore moving forward with her.
[Cheers and applause.]
Casi: I've just wanted this so bad, and to hear "yes" from somebody I've looked up to my whole entire life [Chuckles.]
[Voice breaking.]
it's everything.
Coaches, let me remind you, Ashley is available to steal.
Ashley, anything you'd like to say to Blake? I would like to say thank you so much.
Working with you has been a dream come true so far.
[Audience shouting "Steal!".]
And I'm really grateful Yes! Yes! That is a steal! And another one! A double steal! [Cheers and applause.]
Ohh! For Ashley! Make it three! Yeah! [Laughs.]
Yeah! Wow.
[Laughs.]
Wow! I can't remember the last time I've ever seen all the other coaches go all-in.
Wow! Which leads me to my first point.
Blake: Whoo! There are leaders and there are followers, Ashley.
You know what? I actually No, I was trying Gwen was right behind you.
I was trying to be, like Sometimes it takes a pioneer to lay it down, and then they fall like dominoes.
No! That's not true! Or you could be really like, I had a creative plan.
Like, as soon as you were walking off, I press the button.
I had a plan already.
And it was gonna be, like, really cool, and then this guy A few things are about to happen.
Gwen, along with Blake, will get together.
A lot.
As they already are.
They spend a lot of time.
And they are going to pitch Team Shelton/Stefani.
They're gonna do that thing and they're gonna be super-charming We wouldn't do that to Alicia.
Thank you.
Yeah, they're also gonna do Hold on.
They're also gonna We'd do it to you.
[Laughter.]
Sorry back to my point before I was rudely interrupted by the man who betrayed you.
[Laughter.]
I thought that you won, and I am the only person that actually said that, so just remember that when you're making your decision.
Lot to remember, Ashley.
Is he finished? Lot to remember That was a lot.
I feel like you'd have to listen to a lot of talking if you went to Adam, right? Oh, my gosh! That's a lot of talking.
Every single word relevant.
No fat.
Trim the fat.
Daly: Let's go right down the line.
Gwen.
Ashley, I obviously have a newfound love for country.
I mean, major.
See what I mean, Ashley? No, but I think what's interesting about it is that it's this new world that I never knew about.
I literally have playlists of music I've never heard before, and it's just so beautiful to discover something that is so important.
I feel like I could help you so much as far as how to work the stage as a girl, 'cause that's what I've done, you know, my whole life.
Me too.
So there's, um As a girl.
As a girl.
[Laughs.]
I'd love to work with you.
There you go.
Alicia Keys.
Ashley, I feel like not only did you show your vocal prowess and your skill and your desire and your joy and your love and everything came through, you have so much to say, and I'd love to discover you and find out more about who you want to be.
And if you recall, Adam was the only one that didn't turn his chair for you.
Whoa! So, just in his facts, he forgot.
That doesn't matter.
That is a fact.
You're right.
Anyway, I've always said that soul music and country music belong together, and I would love to be the coach that just takes you to the next level.
Wow, ladies and gentlemen.
Ashley.
[Groans.]
Pick your new coach.
[Audience shouting.]
[Laughs.]
So hard.
Whoo! Uh [Shouting continues.]
Okay, um I pick Alicia.
Daly: Alicia Keys Whoo-hoo! steals Ashley from Team Blake! I am ecstatic about this steal.
Like, seriously, I feel like Ashley has something incredible to offer.
I love her.
Score! Ahhhh! I will wear you down.
Just know that.
Ahhhh! [Laughs.]
Blake: The only bright spot about the fact that Ashley isn't on my team is that she didn't end up on Adam's team.
So happy she didn't pick him.
Yay.
Okay? Thank you so much.
Thank you.
So excited.
Yes! Mmm!
Thank you.
So excited.
Yes! Mmm!
