1 [Beep.]
Base, this is District crew Echo.
Security inspection is complete at the Polk Complex.
All good.
We are on our way over to Cordon Plaza.
Over.
Uhh! Do exactly as I say.
Nate, get the hell out! - You do not want to be a hero! â- Nate: Terrell! No.
Badges, keys, clothes--now! You want us to strip? Did I stutter? [Keys jingling.]
[Unzipping.]
[Zipping zip ties.]
I'll take care of them.
Hey, Kristy? Uh-huh.
Uh, do you know where I put my-- Left your phone? What would I do without you? You know, the aughts just called.
They want their phone back.
That's very funny.
Seriously, does the bureau even know you're still using the thing? Now, as charming as you are, we can't keep having this little conversation.
Please, if not for yourself, then do it for the children.
For the children? Yes.
If their parents were sharing the same phone technology, then they could synchronize their calendars.
Well, that's a very persuasive argument, counselor, but if you don't know me by now I know.
You're a creature of habit, but habits were meant to be broken.
You already bought it, didn't you? Mm-hmm.
It's not that I don't deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness, it's just that I gotta go.
Babe, just take it with you.
You're gonna love it.
Now give us a kiss and Mmm.
I know you think this is about my fear of change, but it's actually about my commitment to the things that I trust.
Uh-huh.
Ok.
You're the profiler, sweetheart, but I think it's about a better phone.
What do you think? Looks good.
[Exhales.]
What time is it? Showtime.
[Indistinct chatter.]
Guard: Security badges, please.
All right.
And you, sir.
[Beeping.]
[Elevator bell dings.]
Woman: I'm so sorry, Mr.
Cole, but we don't seem to have an appointment scheduled for you this morning.
That can't be.
I called last week.
Do you recall to whom you spoke? It was a woman, a younger woman.
Everyone around here is younger than I am, sono matter.
Why don't we make an appointment for you right now.
Would that work? Can I see someone today? I need to speak to one of your lawyers today.
Woman: Of course.
May I help you? Vextel, ma'am.
Maintenance check.
Mm-hmm.
Well, let's see what we can do for you.
Booyah.
[Beep.]
[Click.]
[Beeping rapidly.]
[Shouting and screaming.]
Everybody, get on the ground! Right now! [Firing.]
[Screaming.]
Get up.
What? Get up! Woman: Oh, my God! Oh, my God! [Beep.]
Yes, sir? Has HRT deployed? I'll brief my team immediately.
Dave, Matt, we're gonna need all hands on deck.
I just got off the phone with the director.
He wants the BAU to take charge of a hostage situation in progress downtown.
Where downtown? Cordon Plaza, fourth floor.
The offices of the American Legal Defense Council.
ALDC? That's right.
Hostage rescue team is on its way, so-- Kristy.
What about Kristy? She just started working for the ALDC a few weeks ago.
Ladies and gentlemen, listen up! I realize you're confused, you're scared.
You're wondering âwhat the hell is going on here?â [Laughs.]
Right? Well, a lot is going on here.
Because today is a special day.
Today is the day that all of you get to become a part of history! [Firing, screaming.]
Prentiss: âViolence is not a catalyst but a diversion.
â Joseph Conrad.
[Woman screaming.]
Simmons: I need to get down there right now.
I can handle HRT's response.
Matt, please.
You know you can't go down there.
Screw the damn protocol, Dave.
We're talking about my wife here.
I know.
And I can't imagine what you're going through right now.
[Exhales.]
Kristy and I actually had a plan for the kids in case something like this happened, only we thought the roles would be reversed.
Justplease don't make me be a bystander to all this.
Ok, you can stay here with us, help build the profile.
Thank you.
Alvez will take point with HR and run the tactical op on the scene.
JJ and Tara will coordinate hostage negotiations.
Cole: Before the rest of our show begins, I'm gonna need you to hand over all personal communication devices-- This including but not limited to your cell phones, watches, and laptops.
What do you really want from us? Your phones.
I don't have my phone here.
Huh.
Where is it? I left it at home.
I swear.
You left it at home? I got into a fight with my girlfriend and I just had to leave the apartment.
But then when I got here, I realized I didn't have it.
What's your name? Steven.
Steven Onishi.
Oh.
And, uh What is it that you, uh-- What is it that you do here, Steven? I'm a paralegal.
That's good for you.
[Dialing.]
Singer: yo, moves like a boss yo, man I say moves like a boss, yo, man That's a good one.
Moves like a boss, yo, man I say moves like a boss, yo, man I say moves like a boss-- Look, that was stupid-- You must think I'm stupid! Huh? Is that it? You think I'm an idiot? [Kicks foot.]
Please! - Huh? Is that it? - Steven: Stop! Think I'm an idiot? Steven: Stop, please! Hey, let go of me! Let go of-- Oh, my God, Steven, are you ok? Commander Nash? I'm SSA Jareau.
This is SSA Lewis and Alvez.
I can tell you what I know so far.
About a half-hour ago, we received multiple reports of shots fired on the fourth floor.
And the elevators went down, building security responded, they went up the stairs, and that's when they found these-- Bricks of C-4 wired to all the doors into the ALDC offices.
Bomb techs are working on them now.
Doesn't look like enough to bring the building down on our heads-- But it's enough to kill everybody up in those offices.
Do we know how many people that is? Our batch count confirms 26 ALDC lawyers and staffers.
How many hostage-takers? Your guess is as good as mine.
We have no eyes on the fourth floor.
Well, what about fiber-optic cameras? We tried.
But they blew out the lens with the infrared lights, and now we're bringing in thermal imaging.
Well, with that many people to manage, my guess is at least 2 unsubs, maybe 3.
So far, whoever's up there has made zero effort to establish any line of communication with us.
Oh, no, they're communicating with us.
By hacking into all of this building's operating systems, they're trying to let us know that they think they're in charge.
Well, let's see what Garcia can do.
[Ring.]
What's up with you? You can't screw around like that.
Don't you start questioning me.
I'm the one in charge here.
I shouldn't have to remind you of that.
And I shouldn't have to remind you that cops and FBI have protocol they have to follow.
They're waiting to negotiate.
So they're not gonna come blasting in here unless a hostage is killed.
I know that.
That's not what it looked like when you were bashing that guy's head in.
The only way we pull this off is by sticking to the plan.
Once we're ready for them, you can do whatever the hell you want to anybody you want.
When will we be ready for them? Jasper says we're right on schedule.
Garcia: Try as I might, I haven't wrestled the building's operating system from these rat finks, but they got access to the server by using a keychain created by the Vextel integrated security systems.
Yeah, we just found one of their work vans here in the parking garage.
Vextel is the company responsible for the whole security shebang at Cordon Plaza.
They had a maintenance check scheduled today for the ALDC.
Do we know the names of the employees assigned to do the check? Terrell Campbell and Nathan Butler.
I'll follow up with the company, but their work records both look really clean.
See if you can track the last 48 hours of their lives.
If they're not directly involved, they may have been targeted.
You got it.
These guys are running their own playbook.
They've made no provocative action since seizing the hostages, and we've been trying to open a line of communication with them, but for the last 20 minutes they just pick up the phone and then hang it up.
And they probably think we're gonna be thrown off by the uncertainty.
It's a crude psychological warfare, which makes me think we're dealing with young men.
How long does commander Nash think it'll take to disarm the IEDs? Alvez: Not sure.
The C-4 charges are not only hard-wired to all the doors, but there might also be a remote detonator.
Have you guys been able to get any thermal imaging of the offices yet? Commander Nash says it's on its way.
So you can't see what's going on up there, can you? No, Matt, we can't.
Not yet.
I know you want to be here, but-- I need to be here.
I'm ok.
I've only seen 3 of them.
You say that like you have a plan.
Yeah, I do.
The police and FBI, I'm sure they're already downstairs.
But the problem is they have no way of actually seeing what's happening here.
So you and I have to create a little distraction, and then I-- Ok.
Here's when the fun begins.
Get up.
- Oh! - Up! Let's go to your office.
To your office.
[Sighs.]
Just let the others go.
I will stay with you.
No.
No, no, no.
Nobody's going anywhere.
But I do need your help.
I need you to choose a representative from your group to speak on my behalf to help me negotiate with the cops.
You can't speak for yourself? Despite the propaganda you put out, police actually have an itchy trigger finger for folks like me.
No.
I won't do it.
I won't let myself be intimidated by men like you.
Now, who's the one of us that's really prejudiced here? [Gunshot.]
Ohh! [Elevator moving.]
The elevator-- it's on the move.
Prentiss: Tara, talk to me.
It's coming down from the fourth floor.
[Beep.]
[Weapons cocked.]
[Cell phone ringing.]
This is SSA Tara Lewis.
To whom am I speaking? I'd say you're speaking to your worst nightmare, SSA Tara Lewis.
You can't intimidate a federal agent, so let's just stop with the games.
No games.
I do like your style, SSA Tara Lewis.
So here is my one and only demand.
Release Leonard Hagland from prison, or I start executing a hostage every 15 minutes, starting Now.
Leonard Rudolph Hagland, 75 years old, former leader of a separatist group called The Horsemen.
Didn't the ALDC identify The Horsemen as a hate group? They did, 5 years ago, and since then, the ALDC lawyers, like Kristy, have been waging a nonstop legal battle against the horsemen.
Garcia: One night, in April 2015, Hagland shot and killed two Virginia state troopers during a raid of his house.
Hagland now sits on death row in Virginia.
He's exhausted all of his appeals.
He's scheduled to die by lethal injection Monday morning.
Sounds like Hagland's last desperate effort to stay alive.
Using some good soldiers recruited from The Horsemen.
I say we bring Leonard Hagland in here.
If he is indeed the brains behind this operation, I bet he'll be such an arrogant son of a bitch, we won't be able to stop him from bragging about his master plan.
Prentiss: It's worth a shot.
I'll make the call.
Alvez: It's impossible to decipher these temperature differentials.
This building's state-of-the-art insulation is doing one hell of a job insulating these unsubs from us.
And the clock is ticking.
We need to get eyes in there asap.
I hate to go in there flying blind.
We shouldn't even consider that possibility.
The risk of a blind breach is far outweighed by the risk of our further delay.
By my calculations, they still have the C-4 on their side.
So, I'm sorry.
I'm not ready to start adding up acceptable losses without first exhausting every other scenario open to us.
What other scenario? Like getting the bastard on the phone and talking.
Lewis: Guys.
[Sighs.]
Phone's clean.
No DNA, no prints, and the unsub's number seems to trace back to a disposable burner.
But it does say something that he chose to label himself âBad Guy #1.
â Kind of like a dark class clown.
This guy really craves attention.
Absolutely.
I mean, he wants to talk to us.
He needs to, if only to show off.
Alvez: But I'm sure his plan calls for radio silence.
Yeah.
That's why I think I should start texting him.
Hey.
D.
C.
Metro just found a suspicious van abandoned along the Vextel security team's work route.
All right, I'll go check it out.
[Phone beeps.]
[Beep.]
[Drilling.]
Is there a problem? He shouldn't have shot her.
So what? So what? So you want them to think we're willing to negotiate? He knows what he's doing.
He just better have all of our money when this is over.
He will.
But you know this is about more than just money, my friend.
Look, I know because you and he are both Horsemen, you trust-- He's the one.
I'm telling you.
Sure.
Don't you worry about a thing.
[Tires squeal.]
Man: Come on, quick.
The driver's side is [Indistinct chatter.]
[Indistinct police radio.]
Officer: Stand down.
[Exhales.]
Thanks.
So, can you tell me what happened? Uh, yeah.
Me and Nate, we just got done with the Polk building.
I radioed the office and then wham! These two dudes, they come out of nowhere.
Do you think you could describe them to me? They was definitely a couple of You know, white dudes, but I didn't get a good look at them 'cause they had bandannas over their faces.
They pushed us in the van, told us to give up everything, including our uniforms.
And then one guy, he ties us up, while the other guy, he says I'll take care of them.
And that's when I thought we were dead.
But he didn't do it.
I don't get it.
I mean, I'm grateful as hell, but why tell the other guy that he was gonna take-- Take care of us if that's not what he was gonna do? Prentiss: So, one of the unsubs chose to spare the lives of the Vextel crew.
Not only did he spare their lives, he deliberately lied to his partner.
Reid: So if our unsubs have been culled from the ranks of The Horsemen, then it seems that one of them's having some doubts about their manifest destiny.
And that one may not be so keen on sacrificing himself for the cause.
[Text message tone.]
Leonard Hagland has arrived.
You bureau boys are something else.
You think just because I'm about to get a big old needle in my veins that you can bring me in here and I just might break down and snitch? I'm Supervisory Special Agent David Rossi.
Now, the reason that I-- Yeah, you must have me confused with one of your mafia cousins, 'cause I don't bend over like that.
Wow! Sticks and stones, Lenny.
But I gotta say, I was expecting something a little more intimidating from the notorious leader of The Horsemen, but then you're just the punk-ass coward who shot two Virginia State troopers in the back.
I acted in self-defense.
Those men were trespassing on my property.
They were there to assassinate me.
It's all part of your FBI/ATF Gestapo.
Whoa, whoa.
You know, I wish we had time to chat, but there's some men who have taken a whole bunch of innocent people hostage, and their only demand is that we set you free.
Now, do you know anything about that? Who are the hostages? That doesn't matter.
- You don't see it, do you? - See what? The awakening.
'Cause this crooked system has chosen to crucify men like me.
It's forced a sword to be drawn that will refresh the tree of liberty with blood and-- You know what that sounds like to me, besides a whole bunch of BS? That sounds like a non-denial denial.
I got nothing to do with it.
Today you got some innocent folk being held hostage.
But tomorrow, tomorrow, you have to understand, judgment will march right to the heart of the FBI and cut it out.
Lenny, are you threatening me? No, I'm just, uh I'm just telling you the truth.
Garcia: Oh, my God! Oh, my God.
It's Kristy! She called 911.
They patched her through to me.
Kristy? You ok? I'm ok.
How many men are holding you? There are 3, in their 20s.
Ok.
You know what could really help us right now is if you could use your phone's camera to show us what's going on in there.
I know.
I know.
But they took all of our devices, so this isn't my phone.
It's the one I just bought you.
But even without the service being activated, it let me make an emergency call.
Can you activate the phone she's calling from? I sure can.
Give me a sec.
Kristy I want you to know how much I love you.
I love you, too.
Oh, no.
Kristy? What's wrong? All right, can I have everyone's attention? It doesn't seem like anyone on the outside cares whether you people live or die.
No.
- Get up.
- No.
No, please.
- Get up! - Please, let me go.
Don't do this! Please, don't do this! Just let me go! Uhh! [Gasps.]
[Gunshot.]
Kristy? [Elevator bell dings.]
[Cell phone ringing.]
You think dropping bodies is gonna accelerate getting you what you want, but it won't.
Hagland has just been released into FBI custody, but if you don't keep your finger off the trigger, that's where it ends.
Please spare me the boring details.
Just release him, and this is over.
I can keep things moving forward, but I need you to make a good faith effort.
All right? A gesture.
I need you to release just one hostage to me.
Just one.
[Beep.]
Matt, Matt, are you still there? I'm here.
Ok.
I'm ready to do this when you are.
Garcia, we need to activate this phone.
Yeah, yeah, I know.
Almost there.
And we are Live.
Kristy should be able to switch to a video call now.
OhMatt.
It's really good to see you.
You, too.
Ok, let's do this.
So even though I might now be able to keep talking to you, I might still be able to hear you 'cause I have this wireless ear bud in.
Ok.
I hope that helps.
That's perfect.
Prentiss: Garcia, back to you.
We need to uplink this to the command post.
Already making the connection.
You're looking at Dalton McCann, 24, and this is Jasper Talbot, 26.
Both of them are ex-army, dishonorably discharged, ex-cons.
They are suspected for a series of bank robberies in Florida.
So I've been following up on some friends of Hagland, and I found a lead on our third man.
Now, according to visitors logs, the young man sitting with Leonard Hagland is a Roland Cole.
And when Rossi asked me to do a little more digging, I couldn't find any real record of a Roland Cole.
Now, take a look how the two interact with one another.
Reid: The body language does suggest a particular bond of intimacy.
Rossi: Yeah.
And what I'm seeing is the interplay between a father and son.
Except there is no official record of Hagland having a son.
He has 3 daughters from one wife.
Prentiss: But you think he also has an illegitimate son.
A son desperate to be legitimately acknowledged by an absent father.
Well, I'm still going through the ALDC files and I should be able to verify that information.
We should do that.
We need the details.
I'm gonna go get confirmation right from the source.
We know that his name isn't Roland Cole.
And not only that, we know that he's your son, Lenny, and that he's the one leading the charge to set you free.
He's a good boy.
And your wife clearly has no idea.
But I honestly wish that she'd been the one who'd given him to me.
But that is not how it was intended, because the Good Lord, well, He works in mysterious ways.
If you care so much about your son, why would you be willing to sacrifice him for some vain effort-- Oh, spare me your sanctimonious crap, Agent Rossi.
Now, do you really want to save the lives of those innocent people, because you know I can do that for you.
That's why you brought me in here to begin with.
I could talk to the boy.
I wish you could talk to him.
But I'd like something in return.
Of course you do.
Now, I'm not asking to get out of jail.
I just want to get off death row.
Get me off death row and get me into a federal facility where I can serve out the rest of my life.
That afraid to meet your maker? I'm afraid you don't have much time.
Well? I'm not here to negotiate.
Then the blood of all those ALDC folks is on your hands.
Thanks for the help, Lenny.
[Door closes.]
So, if Roland Cole is Hagland's son, then the way to defuse this situation right now is to somehow undermine his belief that this sacrifice is gonna earn him his father's long-withheld approval.
Well, one way we can start to get inside of his head is by using his real name.
Looks like it's Josh Martin.
Simmons: Also, I'm not sure if Kristy's even aware of how much deep background research the ALDC did on Hagland and his Horsemen, but the rumor was that most of their money came from running illegal guns through Mexico.
Jareau: And then up into New Mexico, where Josh was born and raised.
Matt, how confident are you that this research is accurate? You're asking because you want to know if that's who Josh's mother really was? You know I never say die.
I've been going through my digital bag of tricks figuring a way to hack the building back from the bad guys.
I found a discrepancy in the blueprints of the building server and those on file at Vextel security.
Wait, I think Garcia just found it.
This is the way they think they can guarantee walking away from this.
What damn good is it doing? Erol, please, be quiet.
We just need to stay calm.
[Erol whispering indistinctly.]
Hey.
Oh, no.
No! He found the camera.
What, do you want to help the cops? Huh? Is that it? It wasn't me, I swear! Let's give 'em something to watch.
No! Get up! Let him go.
I did it.
Uhh! It was my phone.
I put it up there.
Uhh! Stop! No! Aah! No! Aah! No! Aah! [Screaming continues.]
Want to watch? Watch this.
[Gasping.]
[Cocks weapon.]
[Crying.]
Lewis: Kristy, Kristy, if you can still hear us, repeat every word I tell you.
Josh.
Josh You don't have to do this.
You don't have to do this.
What did you just say? - Lewis: I know who you really are.
- I know who you really are.
Your name is Josh Martin.
Your name is Josh Martin.
That's right.
Lewis: guns through Mexico.
And that's where What the hell is she talking about? The Horsemen were running guns through Mexico, and that's where Leonard Hagland met Gabriela.
- Lewis: He took her as his mistress - He took her as his mistress Lewis: He snuck her across the border And then he snuck her across the border and moved her to New Mexico.
Lewis: Truth or Truth or consequences, New Mexico, where she gave birth to you, Josh.
Shut up! She's getting in his head.
Shut up! - Hey - Kristy: Your dad was hardly around.
Where's Matt? Kristy: And it wasn't until years later that you found out it was because he had - a whole other family in Virginia.
- Shut up! Is she telling the truth? Look, this doesn't matter right now.
Of course it matters! Talbot: I'm sorry, Dalton, you were right.
I mean, here we are risking our lives for some damn half-breed! Traitor.
Please stop.
Look, don't you say another word.
Get down! FBI! Lay down your weapons! Put 'em down! [Screaming.]
[Crash.]
You get him? No.
But damn it, they found the vent.
We have to seal that up.
All right.
You take care of that.
I'll take care of him.
FBI.
Show me your hands.
Dalton! [Crackling.]
Uhh! Ah! [Grunting.]
Uhh! Get up! [Gasping.]
Aah! Matt! No! [Grunting.]
Please It's not you.
Singer: Hands and hearts Whispered plans we saw the You'll be ok.
Planting our dreams to see what grows And building walls around the things we love Building walls around the things we love And I love our home [Handcuffs click.]
It's over.
Your son is in custody.
How many hostages are dead? You know, not only will you be getting the needle on Monday morning, but Josh will be following in your footsteps.
You were right, Lenny.
God does work in mysterious ways.
Get him out of here.
Singer: Tears and rain Flow and drown That our moments will never die - Here you go.
- Thank you.
Let me see.
Never alone How you feeling? I'll build these walls around our home I don't know.
Does that make sense? It does.
I think you're gonna want to talk to somebody, not just me.
[Cell phone beeps.]
[Beep.]
Everybody wants to check on you.
You're using the phone.
Of course.
This is the phone that saved your life.
Mm-hmm.
So, you're saying I was right.
[Laughs.]
Mm.
Mmm.
Simmons: It is âProverbsâ that reminds us, âDo not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.
â And I love our home
