The Voice US (2011) s14e04 Episode Script

The Blind Auditions, Part 4

1 [Cheers and applause.]
ADAM: So, it's Season 14.
We got Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys, the newbie, Kelly Clarkson.
What do they have in common? They're all gonna lose.
Who's ready? I'm ready.
Who's gonna win? I'm gonna win.
Here we go.
Super excited.
Wah! I won Season 12, and now I'm back to take it again! Kelly Clarkson and those boys they better watch out for me.
I think this is gonna be easy.
I am the champ of champs, so DALY: Give it up for our Season 14 coaches! [Cheers and applause.]
As our coaches settle into their chairs, let's head backstage and check in with the first artist of the night.
Whoo! SPENSHA: Today is nerve-racking because this is a big opportunity.
These four coaches are amazing.
Mm, I'm gonna start crying.
Walking out on this stage, I'm so honored and so excited.
I can't even believe that I'm here.
I vowed to myself that I would never sing again.
- What is your name? - Spensha Baker.
I'm 24.
I'm from San Antonio, Texas.
I grew up in church singing gospel music.
When I was 11, I ended up signing with a major record label and was the only gospel artist that they had signed.
And toured for three years.
However, the label decided to part ways.
For me, as a young person, to experience any kind of rejection hurts.
After going through that, we moved to Nashville, and I started singing at little restaurants and also sang at the Bluebird.
I started slowly growing this appreciation for country.
But I had been doing music for 10 years, kind of going in circles, not really getting anywhere.
I just didn't feel the love and passion anymore.
And so I completely stopped singing.
I wanted to live a normal life.
So for the last year, I've been working in real estate.
It's a great career, but, obviously, not as fulfilling as music.
And so my mom asked me to audition for "The Voice.
" MARCY: Sometimes, you have to keep reminding your child what is the gift, what is the purpose.
Once I started singing [voice breaking.]
I felt like my heart beat again.
So I knew that music was something, uh, that I could never run away from.
Now I'm not running anymore.
My roots are in gospel, but I see myself as a country artist.
Like gospel, country music is all about stories and the feeling.
I'm really hoping to merge both worlds.
For my blind audition, I'm singing "Blackbird.
" I love the message.
I am the blackbird.
Where it says, "You were only waiting for this moment to arise," I feel that this is my moment.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night I take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise Blackbird singing in the dead of night I take these sunken eyes and learn to see All your life You were only waiting for this moment to be free Blackbird, fly Blackbird, fly Into the light of the dark black night Blackbird singing in the dead of night I take these broken wings and learn to fly All your life You were only waiting for this moment to arise You were only waiting for this moment to arise You were only waiting For this moment to arise [Cheers and applause.]
Yes! ALICIA: Whoo! [Laughs.]
Yes! - What's your name? - Whoo! I'm Spensha Baker.
I'm 24.
I'm from San Antonio, Texas.
Yes! That's where I'm from! I'm just saying - You're not from San Antonio, Texas.
- I'm from Texas.
Children! What are you talking about? You're an Okie.
That ain't Texan.
Sorry you had to hear this.
Well, I love the fact that you took one of my favorite songs - and did it your way.
- Yeah.
A-And that makes me sad I didn't turn around.
Thank you, Adam.
You are so special and so unique.
And I really enjoyed listening to your beautiful rendition.
To have these two coaches to choose from, it's gonna be incredible for you.
So congratulations.
Thank you, Alicia.
I love you.
My favorite thing in life is to see a singer feel every part of it.
I mean, I grew up in church, so it was almost like you were worshiping while singing that song.
Everybody's gonna believe everything that you say.
And that was a beautiful message.
It was a perfect song, too.
And I cannot wait to see, when you pick me and not Blake - [Laughter.]
- Spensha, don't let her say that.
I-I can't wait to see just more of you.
I can't believe this is happening.
Okay.
I love your slow vibrato.
I love the fact that you can hang out down in the low notes.
You don't get away from them too quickly.
And then all of a sudden, when you pushed the gas, it was like, "Whoa! Who is that?" And today marks my 14th anniversary as a coach.
And you would be the greatest gift to me.
I, too, am celebrating 14 seasons on "The Voice.
" The greatest gift that you could give me [Chuckles.]
- [Laughter.]
- Oh, my God.
The guy who didn't turn around.
would be to choose Kelly Clarkson.
And I don't just say that because of Blake.
What the hell do you mean? Of course that's the only reason you're saying that.
No! Not true! We've toured together.
He knows I love the style of music you're singing.
Coach Kelly.
I really do think that we have a lot of similarities.
Before we say that y'all have similarities, just let me put the nail in my own coffin here.
Do we even know what kind of music you want to pursue? Country.
Well! - [Cheers and applause.]
- Dang straight! Let me go ahead and Well, that is so interesting! pull that nail right back out of my coffin.
That is so interesting, 'cause I have done both.
- I know.
- Soul and country.
- I know.
- I'm just saying.
[Laughs.]
Okay.
I'm ready to hear.
I have won some awards in country music.
I've released some country songs.
I stood in line for a Brian White signature at a Justin Boots.
I don't blame you.
I don't stand in line for country concerts.
I put them on.
Ooh! I think you can make a difference that we need in country music.
Thank you, Blake.
I would be honored to be your coach.
[Cheers and applause.]
ALICIA: Let's do this, y'all.
Who do you want to be your coach? - You know that I could use somebody - Kelly! Kelly! Kelly! I can't believe this is happening.
You know that I could use somebody I pick Blake.
- Yeah! - Someone like you Yes! Ohh! - Told you.
Told you.
- I like that.
You're my favorite artist.
- You're my favorite artist this year.
- Thank you, Blake.
Thank you so much.
BLAKE: Can't stop smiling right now about Spensha's voice.
It's soft, but it's also powerful when it needs to be.
It's got its own character.
Oh, my God.
I am so excited.
- Yay! - Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! BLAKE: To get her on country radio right now would be the greatest thing that could happen to country music.
Thank God I'm a country boy You're You're a country boy when you want to be, aren't ya? I like that for you, Blake.
He's a country boy.
He's a rock-'n'-roll boy.
He's a pop-music boy.
[Southern accent.]
He's whatever boy y'all want him to be to get someone on your team! [Laughter.]
DALY: Coming up, more outstanding performances.
Sing, sing You are really sick and phenomenal.
Hey, hey, hey Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! DALY: And later Yeah! DALY: a moment that shocks our coaches.
Think we're all a little bit speechless.
I just want to sing with you.
Thank you for bringing this gorgeous artistry.
You don't need us.
We need you.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the blind auditions at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Hey, watch this.
Oh, sweet! Sweaty pie hole! ALICIA: What? Como se llama! No! Kelly Clarkson! [Laughter.]
- What's up, y'all? - Hi! What's going on? What are you watching? We were only watching things that winners can watch.
I'm a winner.
No, season winners of "The Voice.
" Okay, but this I might win this one.
- You never know.
- [Laughs.]
DALY: While our coaches head back to their chairs, let's meet 18-year-old Alexa Cappelli from Upland, California.
[Alarm blaring.]
ALEXA: On a regular school day, I usually wake up at 5:30 a.
m.
It takes me about an hour and a half to get to school, but it's so totally worth it.
I'm in the commercial music program at Orange County School of the Arts.
You all have a worksheet.
I'm taking classes like songwriting and recording and learning more about the music industry.
Growing up, I was kind of a shy kid.
Art school helped me to come out of my shell.
La, la, la, la, la, la, la Every Friday at lunch, a band plays, and we always gather around and party and dance, listening to them.
It's super fun.
[Cheers and applause.]
Today, I have my mom, my dad, and my twin brother.
He's my best friend.
You win! Yeah! Aww! He's older by a minute, and he's always gonna hold that against me.
Oh, dear God, no.
[Laughter.]
Will you stop laughing at me? I am amazingly proud, and I am so excited for her.
I can't even begin to tell you.
It means a lot to me being here.
"The Voice" is me going after my dreams.
Come on! Sing to me! Let me love you! That was creepy.
You're right about that.
[Sighs.]
Ain't got no trouble in my life No foolish dream to make me cry I'm never frightened or worried I know I'll always get by I heat up I cool down When something gets in my way, I go around it Don't let life get me down Gonna take it the way that I found it I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me Yeah I got the music in me I got the music in me I got the music in me Feel funky Feel good Gonna tell ya I'm in the neighborhood Gonna fly like a bird on the wing [Cheering.]
Hold on to your hat, honey Sing, sing, sing, sing I got the music in me Whoa I got the music The pretty music I got the music In me Yeah, yeah, yeah [Cheers and applause.]
Whoo! Whoo! Oh, my God.
- Wow.
What is your name? - Alexa Cappelli.
I'm 18 years old, and I'm from Upland, California.
California! [Cheers and applause.]
You've got to be tired from all those runs.
- [Chuckles.]
- Music in me It was good, yes.
Alexa! I love you! [Chuckles.]
Thanks! I love you, too! Don't listen to him! You I hope you love me enough to choose me as your coach because it wasn't just really good.
It was also really soulful.
There's always someone we're looking for.
Like, this special thing that no one else has.
The connection to the emotion, to the feeling, so - Thank you so much.
- I can't wait.
[Applause.]
Alexa, you are really sick and phenomenal.
And the only reason I didn't turn around is because I'm looking for something specific, but I want you to know I was wowed by your voice.
Thank you.
When you started singing, all I could think of was, "Wow, this girl needs to be with Kelly Clarkson.
" Yes! Blake's opinion is irrelevant 'cause he didn't press his button.
So I just want to know what's your favorite music to listen to.
A lot of classic rock, Kelly Clarkson, pop.
- Yes! - Well Kelly, I go to Orange County School of the Arts, and I actually auditioned with one of your songs.
All right, it was it was nice talking to you.
Well Okay! I'm curious.
- What was the song? - "People Like Us.
" I want to hear you sing "People Like Us.
" Man, you got a soulful voice.
[Cheers and applause.]
People like us We gotta stick together Keep your head up Nothing lasts forever - Here's to the damned - Yes! To the lost and forgotten Hard to get high when you're livin' on the bottom Oh, whoa Oh, whoa - [Cheers and applause.]
- Yes! I'm so excited.
Please pick me, please! I know how to navigate with you because I have a similar voice.
I've done stuff in pop rock.
I've done a little R&B.
Like, I love music.
- As long as I'm feeling it - Yeah.
and it's soulful to me, I want to sing it.
And I feel like we're very similar.
Wow! [Chuckles.]
Hey, Blake, why don't you ask me, "Who do you think that I think she's gonna pick as her coach?" Hey, Adam, who do you think Alexa's gonna pick as her coach? Uh No! Kelly Clarkson! [Laughter.]
Okay, Alexa, who do you pick as your coach? No! Kelly Clarkson! Come on.
[Laughter.]
Say it like that.
Say it like that! I love you both so much.
Oh, man.
I think you should pick me, personally.
No! I pick Kelly.
Yes! Yes! Yeah! I turned for Alexa because I felt like we were kind of kindred spirits in our voices.
Her range is outstanding.
Then she said that she was a Kelly Clarkson fan.
So I'm very excited.
Whoo! Thank you.
See ya, buddy.
Oh, my God! That's what I wanted.
I wanted a big vocalist.
She's great.
ADAM: Kelly's doing really well.
So many words come out of her mouth.
It's like she's an auctioneer.
She's killing it.
But I'll never give up.
Remember that time Alexa chose me? - Oh, my God.
- That was cool, right? No! Kelly Clarkson! This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back.
I love how I can, like, see my family.
What's up? Y'all ready to see Adam cry like a baby? Sit down, Sasquatch.
[Laughter.]
That was my mom laughing the loudest.
[Both laugh.]
She's like, "Ha ha ha, Sasquatch!" Nothing worse than seeing a grown man cry, is there? When I beat you [Laughs.]
DALY: Let's meet the next artist.
25-year-old Adrian Brannan from Ventura, California.
[Announcer speaks indistinctly.]
ADRIAN: I was 17 when I started riding buckin' horses.
And I am a full-time musician.
I sing cowboy music.
Oh, say, can you see Cowboy music is all about what you do every day on a ranch, and country music is just a little bit broader.
The past few years, I've been on the road about 200 days out of the year, singing at every rodeo.
So I literally live out of the back of a truck, and I love it.
My parents always exposed us to a lot of different music.
I was 13 when I got into opera.
So I could be horseback, you know, singing - [Sings in Italian.]
- [Laughs.]
Which I don't know if the horses appreciated that, but I did.
It was a really weird transition for me to go from opera to cowboy music, but I have always been a cowgirl.
I rode broncs for about three years, and there's always been livestock around.
The outlet was to start writing about them.
It just kind of happened.
I really respect all four of these coaches.
I would really love to work with Blake because I grew up with his music.
And I would love to work with Kelly Clarkson.
That woman is a powerhouse.
This is a huge opportunity for me.
[Chuckles.]
Came out West together with a common desire The fever we had might've set the West Coast on fire Two months later got trouble in my mind My baby moved out, and she left me behind But it's all right It's midnight And I've got two more bottles of wine The way she left sure turned my head around Seemed like overnight, she just up and put me down Ain't gonna let it bother me today I been workin', and I'm too tired anyway It's all right It's midnight And I've got two more bottles of wine Hey [Cheers and applause.]
Oh.
Oh, my God.
You are so great.
- I love you.
- Hi, guys.
What is your name? Where are you from? My name is Adrian Brannan.
I'm 25 years old.
And I'm from Ventura, California.
Your personality is incredible.
- Yeah.
Magnificent.
- I mean Thank you.
You're very sweet.
We need to get you in a flat cowboy hat, Blake.
Like the Hamburglar? You look cool in yours.
The reason I didn't push my button is something that Kelly and I were discussing as you were performing, which was a little bit of diction.
You couldn't always tell what you were saying.
You know, some of the words were getting kind of lost in the in the shuffle there.
So just think about that next time you sing.
Be sure you're enunciating as best you can.
- Okay.
- Yep.
[Applause.]
Obviously, you love country music.
You can hear that.
I love country music, as well.
You are so sweet.
Thank you so much.
No, this is just a big honor to just be out here.
This is so much fun.
This is great.
I love your spirit! [Cheers and applause.]
ALICIA: Well, I just want to say I love that vibrato that you have.
It's so beautiful.
You have a beautiful tone, and thanks for singing for us today.
Thank you so much for all the advice.
I really appreciate it.
Yay, Adrian! ALICIA: Adrian she had a beautiful voice, but I wanted to feel more uniqueness from her.
Goodbye, sweetie.
Good luck.
Thank you! She's the cutest ever.
I'm definitely being selective.
I'm looking for the stuff that rises to the top.
All right? The cream of the crop.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the blind auditions, where the artists and their families excitedly await an opportunity on the "Voice" stage.
MEGAN: It just means the whole world that they're here.
JARON: Honestly, to have my family here just makes it all worthwhile.
WILKES: My family is the most important thing.
I'm dreamin' of a home life My name's Wilkes.
And livin' comfortably I'm 33 years old, and I'm from Waleska, Georgia.
Been working in music for 17 years.
In 2010, my daughter was born.
It was definitely life-changing.
I actually came off of the road, and now I am a stay-at-home dad.
For me, music started in high school.
I was in a band called High Flight Society.
We were together for 12 years.
I proposed to my wife at a concert.
I played a song that I had written.
The last line of the song was, "Will you marry me?" She's been the most supportive person for my music.
Since we met, I was really into him.
[Laughs.]
So My husband is the best dad.
He does everything.
I mean, he changed her first diaper in the hospital.
[Chuckles.]
[Laughter.]
He's so talented.
I'm really, really proud of him.
Currently, I write country music for a publisher, but my wife is the breadwinner.
She owns a hair salon.
Probably noticed that I have a fairly vibrant shade of orange.
"The Voice" represents an opportunity to financially take a lot of the burden off my wife.
Today is my chance to show everybody why my family believes in me.
So long ago, I don't remember when That's when they say I lost my only friend Oh! Well, they say she died easy of a broken-heart disease As I listened through the cemetery trees But I seen the sun comin' up at the funeral at dawn The long broken arm of human law And it always seemed such a waste She always had a pretty face I wondered why she hung around this place Hey, hey, hey Come on, try a little 'Cause nothing is forever There's got to be something better than in the middle But me and Cinderella We put it all together We can drive it home With one headlight Try 'Cause nothing is forever There's got to be something better Me and Cinderella We put it all together We can drive it home With one headlight We can drive it home Both of them! With one headlight [Cheers and applause.]
ADAM: Yeah! Whoo! - What's your name, man? - My name's Wilkes.
- You held out that - One headlight That was perfect.
I think that you are a singular singer i-in this competition, carrying the torch for a-a very long-lost thing, which is rock-'n'-roll music.
And I really think I'm the one for you.
He's gonna lean heavy on all his woodsiness and stuff.
- Woodsy? - [Laughter.]
I don't hear just rock 'n' roll in you.
I heard a little bit of, like, Southern in there, too.
Do you like country music, as well? I actually write country music for a living.
Rock 'n' roll, country T-There's always a connection between the two.
Yeah.
Like, you know, you can't No, I'm serious.
I do love, though, like, your vibe.
That wasn't a joke! Your vibe is so, like, Matthew McConaughey.
He's like, [As Matthew McConaughey.]
"It'd be a lot cooler if you did.
" - I love it.
I love it.
- Thank you.
- It's awesome.
- Your voice is so sneaky.
The longer the song went on, the more you kept turning the dial, getting it closer and closer to 10.
And that was the difference maker, I think.
There's a wide-open lane for somebody that sounds like you on my team.
I'm a fan.
That's true.
- I appreciate it.
- Yes, sir.
I loved your voice, as well.
And those end notes They were super sick.
- So that was exciting.
- Thanks.
Who do you pick as your coach? Well Wilkes! Come on, Wilkes! [Audience shouting.]
- I'm sorry, Adam.
- No! I'm gonna pick Blake.
Yes! I'm looking forward to working with Wilkes.
I'm honored, brother.
His voice It's definitely rock 'n' roll, but I can tell that there's a little bit of Nashville in there with it.
WILKES: Ultimately, I picked Blake 'cause we come from similar places.
We are both Southern guys, and I just think we'll get along really well.
[Laughs mockingly.]
Yes! - [Laughs.]
- Whoo! Adam is having a-a little bit of a rough day.
That guy's crying about how he can't get anybody on his team.
Might have to go get him a diaper, maybe a little a pacifier, get his binky.
That was so much fun to watch.
[Laughs.]
What a loser.
DALY: After a big win over Adam It's a damn cold night DALY: Blake once again went head-to-head against Kelly for country rocker Jesslee.
I love that you picked something that wasn't country and did your thing with it.
That was really smart.
Cassadee Pope sang that song, and we won that season.
I love you, Kelly, but, Blake, I pick you.
Yes! You're as smooth DALY: After waiting for the perfect artist, Alicia was inspired to turn her chair for high-school senior Jordyn Simone.
ALICIA: Jordyn is fantastic.
The way she sang it so soulfully She has an energy to her, and I'm excited.
DALY: And her excitement for passionate singers continued Killing me softly with his song DALY: when she pushed her button for pop singer Megan Lee Yeah! Megan is going to unleash in a way that's gonna be really exciting.
Ha, ha, and ha! I'm really looking forward to continuing to fill my team up and find those people that are gonna just make you feel.
DALY: leaving Adam as the only coach without a new addition to his team tonight.
- I wish I had more right now.
- ALICIA: Right.
Like, I'm looking back on the day, and I'm like, "Ugh!" It's been tough out there, yeah.
But I'll never stop.
I will always fight.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
- What is your name? - I'm Jaron.
Like Aaron with a "J.
" I'm 29 years old from Shelby, North Carolina.
I'm pretty short, so Should I move my hands? 'Cause I don't to be like I'm a web designer by day and then I sing on the stage at night.
I come off as this Southern relaxed dude, but then I get onstage, and it shows an energy that you don't see when you meet me.
Right now, I sing with a band locally, and I released two singles and then a full album this year.
I'm performing at clubs and bars, singing for hundreds or 10 people.
[Chuckles.]
I was a cheerleader in college, doing handstands and flips.
So I just kind of merged that with all the cool moves on the ground.
And so, hopefully, I'll get to implement that into my performance.
Growing up, my grandpa introduced me to Motown music.
It's not really a genre that's prevalent in my hometown, but Al Green, The Drifters, The Temptations Any artist from Motown, I just love it.
Motown found me because it hit my brain and so forth.
I love to dance, and I love the beat.
I love the words.
Love to dance.
When you have both, I think you really got it made.
Gives me a lot of pride, the fact that he's my grandson.
I would love to work with Adam Levine.
I share a common interest with him in style and voice.
Like, I have the high tones and pop with a little bit of soul.
But all the coaches have great music and great abilities.
I would love to work with any of them.
For my blind audition, I'm singing "This Magic Moment" by Ben E.
King.
"The Voice" could take everything I've worked for and boost it to a level I could never do on my own.
This magic moment So different and so new Was like any other Until I kissed you And then it happened Oh, it took me by surprise I knew that you felt it, too By the look in your eyes This magic moment While your lips are close to mine Will last forever Forever till the end of time Yeah, yeah, yeah Whoa-oh-oh-oh This magic moment Whoa Oh, oh, oh Yeah, yeah This magic moment Will last forever Till the end of time - Yeah - Yeah! Yes! Yes! All right! - That was close! - Yes! - Whoo! - Wow! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Yes, with that jacket! Can I do a quick happy dance before anything? Yes, do it.
Go for it.
Happy dance.
- [Cheers and applause.]
- KELLY: Yes! Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey! - We're meant to be together.
- I want to teach you.
I don't think you've lived until you've seen Blake's happy dance.
I need to see it.
I need to see it.
Come on.
[Cheers and applause.]
Are you ready? [Electronic drums play.]
[Cheers and laughter.]
Yes! All right! I'll be down to teach you some break dancing.
Thank you, guys.
There was so much wrong with that.
[Laughter.]
I do hate him, but deep down somewhere, a place that I have not yet accessed, I still really love him, - so you're with a good man.
- That's good.
That's good.
Well, listen, man, I-I knew from the second you started singing that I was into it.
But you kept taking it to the next level, and there's there's just a quality to your voice that I think's endearing and it drew me in.
Thank you so much.
It was like, "This guy does not need to be going home.
He's got to be staying here," and I'm lucky Seriously, I appreciate it.
That means everything to me.
It means everything to me! You have an awesome coach! Yeah.
You know, I'm surprised I'm the only one that turned around for Jaron.
He's a total package.
He can dance.
He can sing.
He's got a fun personality.
I mean, he can't dance like I can dance, but he can dance pretty good.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you, sir.
KELLY: Jaron was great.
I think it's awesome that he's on Blake's team, but I'm just looking for something specific.
I still have my Block left, and I'm waiting for that perfect moment to use it.
This magic moment - Did you know that song? - Yes.
[Humming.]
- Sweeter than wine - [Chuckles.]
Blackbird singing in the dead of night DALY: Stream tonight's blind audition songs only on Apple Music I got the music in me DALY: or buy them on iTunes.
I got the music in me I got the music in me DALY: Coming up, a memorable performance stuns our coaches.
I've never heard a performance like that at at any level of "The Voice.
" I want to coach you more than I've ever wanted to coach another person.
If I ever did anything right, it was come to this show only to meet you.
- Thank you.
- I'm so curious why you already aren't on the radio.
This is "The Voice" DALY: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Adam, you need some people.
I'm just sayin'.
It's a dance, you know? 'Cause he hasn't gotten one person.
I think I'm looking to be inspired, to be moved to push that button.
DALY: Let's see if Adam's fortune changes with 36-year-old Terrence Cunningham from Washington, D.
C.
I've been singing all of my life, really, but mostly, I'm a piano player.
I've toured the world playing the piano for different artists.
But today's my chance to become a solo artist on a grand, grand scale.
When did you first notice that passion? When he was 3 years old.
I mimicked a song by Prince, and I made him play the first three chords.
And a few days later, he could play the entire song.
Some people are born with it.
TERRENCE: Music is a part of my DNA.
My great aunt is the late, great Etta Baker, famed folk-blues legend who has inspired the likes of Bob Dylan, BB King.
When you were young, was music what you always wanted to do? Absolutely.
It was the only thing.
But I had a daughter when I was 16 years old.
Wow, you were 16.
So all of my focus went to her.
- What's her name? - Tamia.
TERRENCE: Because I was 16, not really knowing anything, I had to mature so fast.
But it's something that I would never trade because I am who I am today because of her.
I knew music would always be there, so I wanted to wait until she was 18 before I mustered the courage to really move to L.
A.
Well, you've got, obviously, some great support here.
Mm-hmm.
But we do have something to show you.
Hi, Dad! Just wanted to let you know that I'm very proud of you.
Aww.
And I'm so happy that the world gets to hear you sing, and I love you, and I know you're gonna do an amazing job.
Aww.
That means everything to me because I really wish that she could have been here.
But she has to work, and I understand.
- Got to respect that.
- I honestly do.
For my blind auditions, I'm singing "My Girl" by The Temptations because it reminds me of my daughter.
She is, indeed, you know, my sunshine on cloudy days.
This is such a monumental platform for any artist, and I'm so blessed to even have this opportunity.
Just really excited to get out there and do my thing.
I've got sunshine On a cloudy day And when it's cold outside, yes I've got the month of May [Laughs.]
Well, I guess Yeah! You'd say What can make me feel this way? [Cheering.]
In In like 30 seconds! Whoo! [Vocalizing.]

- Man, I-I think we're all a little bit speechless right now.

" What a creative, awesome - Creative, yeah.

And what a heartfelt vocal that was.
- Thank you.
- Wow! - Thank you so much.

What made you sing that song? My daughter, so that's why I can make it so personal.
Felt it, man.
That was so beautiful.
I just want to sing with you.
I'd love that.
I'd love that.
Like, I am so curious, like, why you already aren't on the radio.
Well, uh, what was most priority to me was to get my daughter through high school.
- Mm.
- So I put my career on hold to be the father that she needed.
- Mm! Mm! Mm! Mm! Mm! Mm! Mm! - That's really, really cool.
[Cheers and applause.]
Although you have the most amazing voice, these shows are about strategy and, like, when to show what you can do and when to show a little more to keep you on the show and how to get you to the finale.
I have been a contestant that's gotten to a finale, and the thing that's gonna keep propelling you through this show is doing the unexpected.
I want you to succeed.
Thank you.
Whoo! I'm sitting here, and it's the craziest feeling because it's like this vacuum that just happened in this space.
Like, when divinity enters the room, and you can feel it.
Certain things, they just have the right moment, the right space, the right connection.
Absolutely.
Like, if I ever did anything right, it was come to this show only to meet you.
So thank you for just bringing this beautiful honesty and and gorgeous artistry.
I would love to be your coach.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Man, I-I think you're special.
Thank you.
And I've been doing this a long time, and I have seen nobody like you with just the piano and a very tender moment.
Mm-hmm.
And I'd love to be your coach, dude.
Thank you.
You don't need us.
We need you.
- Thank you.
- [Cheering.]
When something truly that is one in a billion comes along, whoever is lucky enough to have you is gonna learn as much from you as they'll be able to teach.
I want to coach you more than I've ever wanted to coach another person on "The Voice.
" Thank you, Adam.
Thank you.
Did you come out here, thinking, "If this person turns their chair, I'm gonna pick them"? Yeah, I had someone in mind.
But honestly, my first priority was just to have anyone turn.
Well, wish granted.
[Chuckles.]
- Yeah.
- [Laughter.]
We're all on pins and needles here 'cause it's time for you to pick a coach, man.
I pick Alicia.
Thunder, thunder, thunder [Cheers and applause.]
Feel the thunder Lightning and the thunder, thunder, thunder ALICIA: I knew that there was something special coming for me, and then Terrence arrived.
Wow! It was like magic in this room.
It was the craziest thing ever.
I was shaking.
I couldn't believe how I felt.
I never felt like that before on this show.
Like, I can't even tell you how happy I am.
Great job! TERRENCE: It was really a very, very difficult decision, and when Alicia made the comment, "Divinity entered the room," that's what won me over.
- Cutie pie.
- Hi.
- Hey, how are you? - Good.
I'm standing here with Alicia Keys.
[Laughter.]
He He talked about you the whole time, Tamia, and he just, like, gave you so much love.
This is Alicia, by the way.
Oh! And your dad smashed it! [Laughter.]
Game over.
- He deserved to be praised.
- Oh, yes, he did.
- Of course he did.
- Yeah.
But, no, I mean, he was good! That was beautiful! I had a chance.
I did have a chance.
[Laughs.]
[Muffled screaming.]
That guy could win the whole thing.
I think I just won "The Voice.
" [Cheers and applause.]
