Law & Order Special Victims Unit s18e11 Episode Script

Great Expectations

1 In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous.
In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit.
These are their stories.
[crowd noise.]
[overlapping chatter.]
Come on, let's go.
[overlapping chatter.]
Kyle, go, go, come on! Move, move, move, Kyle! There you go! Move, move, move, move! - Kyle, Kyle! - Come on, Kyle! [crowd commotion.]
[buzzer.]
[crowd commotion.]
[overlapping shouting.]
Oh, just what I need.
Jack pouting around the house all weekend.
Oh, it's it really wasn't his fault.
That's right.
Jim always says, you win as a team, - you lose as a team.
- That's right.
Damn it.
What was that? We were supposed to be better than St.
Lawrence.
Let's hope they can turn it around before Rockville Center on Wednesday.
Poor Jack he'll be beside himself.
He shouldn't have had the puck in the first place.
I mean, Kyle had his man beat.
He should have shot it.
Is he afraid of scoring goals? Hey, hey! All right, Whitecaps! Come on, Whitecaps! - Come on, Whitecaps! - All right! Let's put this one behind you, now.
[overlapping shouts of encouragement.]
What do you say, Jackie boy? Heads up, now! [overlapping shouting.]
Jack, honey, you did great! Okay, buddy! All right, listen up.
I'm not gonna say much more about that game.
We all know what we need to do.
We got practice tomorrow, here at noon.
Come ready to work.
Are you serious? You missed a wide-open shot! Can't believe you choked.
You suck, Wilson.
- Hey, enough.
- But Kyle, - he missed a wide-open shot! - I don't care.
I said that's enough! [dramatic music.]
I don't understand why you always have to be the last one out.
You move like molasses.
Honey, what's wrong? Did you get hurt during the game? - I'm fine.
- All right.
Clearly, this requires your father's expertise.
You can talk to him about it when you get home.
Hey, do you wanna stop by the market for a Creamline shake? [thud.]
Uhh Oh, God Jack! Oh, God, where is that coming Oh, my God.
Jack! Okay, oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
All right, Jack.
Come on.
[dark music.]
Hey.
What do we got? The victim's name is Jack Wilson, he's 13, he plays for the New York City Whitecaps.
- Which is - The best youth hockey program in the state.
Now Jack's team had a game this morning, but they lost after he missed a last-second shot.
Now his mother noticed he was bleeding in the parking lot afterwards, drove him over here.
- You talk to the doctor? - Yeah.
He said there was tearing in his rectum caused by a blunt instrument.
Like a hockey stick.
Sounds like a hazing.
No, that sounds like sexual assault.
[sighs.]
[dramatic music.]
It wasn't that big a deal.
John Francis Wilson, you tell these officers - who did it this instant.
- Mrs.
Wilson, I-I understand that you're upset.
But it's probably best if we take the lead.
So, Jack, can you tell us what happened? I don't know.
Look, I understand that this is really hard.
But it's really important, so do you know who hurt you? I don't remember.
Okay, but somebody did hurt you.
No, I just fell.
Don't be ridiculous.
The doctor said his Hang on, hang on.
Where'd you fall? On the ice, during the game.
You hurt yourself like that by falling on the ice? So Jack we don't want you to feel uncomfortable.
So if you don't wanna talk now, we can come back later, okay? Jack? How you feeling, pal? - I wanna go home, Dad.
- He just had to be on the team, didn't he? Foundation of the Earth would crumble if he wasn't a Whitecap? - I'm sorry, are you seriously gonna - Mr.
and Mrs.
Wilson, how about we step outside for a moment, okay? Let's all just settle down, here, 'cause I'm sure we want the same thing.
No, fundamentally, we do not.
I didn't want him to join this team in the first place.
That's not fair.
I played on the Whitecaps when I was his age, and I-I I think arguing isn't gonna help your son.
Neither are two police officers hovering over him.
Mr.
Wilson, your son's injuries indicate he's a victim of a sexual assault.
Sexual assault? I saw the doctor on the way in.
He said Jack will be fine.
It was a prank that went too far.
Mr.
Wilson, that's that's not how we saw it.
- Hey, Frank.
- Jim.
And there he is.
Hey, Kyle.
How's Jack? Is he okay? What happened? Well, he We think he's the victim of a hazing incident.
- Oh I'm sorry, this is - I'm Lieutenant Benson.
This is Detective Carisi.
Hazing? All we heard was he collapsed in the parking lot.
So, uh, your name's Kyle? You're on the Whitecaps, too? He's the star.
Okay, so Kyle, did you see anything unusual in the locker room after the game? No, it was quiet.
Everyone just got dressed and went home.
Did anybody give Jack a hard time - after missing that last shot? - No, we're a team.
Win or lose, we stick together.
Well, we're gonna speak with all the boys on the team, but in the meantime, if you think of anything or remember anything, please let us know.
Let's check and see if Jack's ready for visitors.
Seeing his best friend ought to cheer him up.
Is it all right if we go see our son? Of course.
Just just let us know if he remembers anything.
All those players in that locker room? Someone had to have seen something.
Yeah.
It's a team full of young boys.
Nobody wants to get out in front of this.
Even the victim won't talk.
Okay, so call Rollins, uh, have her head over to the rink with Fin.
Talk to refs, talk to coaches, and I want the name of every single player - on either team.
- Got it.
And have CSU head over to that locker room.
Poor kid.
I hope he's gonna be okay.
Well, he's recovering.
It's a serious injury.
What makes you think it was one of my players? Could it have been someone from the Squalls or a Whitecaps player in a different division? - Division? - Yeah, there are ten Whitecaps squads, separated by age and skill level.
- Mites, squirts, peewees - Okay, but right now we need to focus on your kids.
Sure, but I mean, we compete for the New York State Championship every year.
- So? - So none of my boys would jeopardize that by doing something this stupid.
- You got security cameras? - Not in the locker rooms, but I'm sure there are cameras around.
Management can give you whatever they have.
Any troublemakers on your team? [chuckles.]
Have you ever traveled on a bus 4 1/2 hours full of 13-year-olds? They're all troublemakers.
I mean repeat offenders.
Kids that like to do stupid things.
- Um - Look, Coach, I know you don't wanna give up any of your players, but, uh, you gotta cooperate.
Come on.
[sighs.]
Fine.
Timmy Brown and Will Harris.
They're wild.
The boys call them the "Bash Brothers" 'cause they tend to get a little rough.
But but they've never done anything like what happened to Jack.
It they wouldn't last in this program.
It's in violation of their contract.
- Their what? - Their contract.
It lays out our code of ethics.
Every player signs one.
So it couldn't have been a Whitecap.
Hey, where are we with these Bang Brothers? The Bash Brothers.
Like McGwire and Canseco.
No, like Reed and Portman.
"Mighty Ducks 2"? Never mind.
Anyway, these guys have never been in trouble with the law.
They've got no juvenile records.
Okay, you checked, their contracts? All signed and notarized.
A lotta rules for an eighth grader.
I think I've got something.
So I've been taking a look at the security footage from the rink, look: Here are players leaving the locker room, right? Most exit at the same time.
But this is the last kid before look: these two.
[tense music.]
Numbers 26 and 9.
And they're hauling ass, too.
It's ten seconds before our victim, Jack, comes out.
How can you tell that's him? You can't make out his face.
Look, look there at the the sleeve.
You see that? Number 14.
That's Jack's number.
Who are these two kids that came out before him? Number 9, William Harris.
Number 26, Timothy Brown.
The Bash Brothers.
Okay.
Bring them in.
This wasn't a couple of kids playing grab-ass.
We need answers.
So you're telling us you didn't see anything.
No.
I was in my own world.
We lost.
I don't talk to nobody when we lose.
He's not kidding.
Not even to me.
Any of your teammates give Jack grief? - No.
- Okay, when you left the locker room, was it on the early or the later side? Early.
I like to get out fast.
Especially when we lose.
Okay.
How do you explain this? Um, what are we watching? That's your son and his pal Timmy leaving the locker room after the game.
They were the last ones to leave before Jack.
No one else was around.
Wait, but that isn't me.
No? It's not you? You're wearing the exact same jacket as you're wearing now.
Same number.
So what happened, man? He caused you to lose the game, so you decide to hang back and teach him a lesson? No, that's not true.
We stayed to make sure he was okay.
You didn't assault him? If we get a warrant for your hockey sticks, we're not gonna find Jack's DNA? Okay, I don't know what you're implying here.
- But my son - It wasn't our idea! We just held Jack down, but he made us do it.
He went crazy, I've never seen him like that before.
- Timmy, slow down.
- You have to believe me.
He's the one who grabbed the stick.
- No, Timothy - He was like an animal.
You keep saying "he.
" Who is "he"? [dark music.]
- Kyle Turner? - Yeah.
- Who are they? - Adam, take Mark upstairs and call your father.
- What is this about? - We need to talk to your son - down at the precinct.
- And we're gonna need his hockey sticks.
- All of them.
- What? Why? Because he's under investigation for sexually assaulting his teammate.
Sexual assault? My son? That's not that doesn't sound right.
He'd never hurt Jack.
They're best friends.
Well, we have two eyewitnesses who say that they saw him do it.
They claim that it was your idea and that you were the main aggressor.
No.
That isn't possible.
And I don't want him answering any more questions about this.
- Not until my husband gets here.
- That's fine, that's fine.
- We can wait, right? - Sure.
Your number's 99? You gotta be a big Gretzky fan, right? He's the greatest there ever was.
Yeah, he sure is.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, right? - Right? - You really love hockey, - don't you, Kyle? - It's the best sport there is.
What if, um what if it all went away? What? Well, we read your player contract.
The one that you signed.
It explicitly forbids violence against other players.
Which is exactly what we're dealing with here.
No, that's not fair.
You can't kick him off the Whitecaps.
You're right.
We could do a lot worse.
Like like arrest him, for example.
Please, I-I don't know who told you what, but but it's not true.
Well, then tell us what is true, Kyle.
Excuse me, I'm Jim Turner, looking for my son Kyle Turner.
He is in here somewhere.
Okay, one second, sir.
Detective, Mr.
Turner's here to see you.
Yes, Mr.
Turner.
I'm Detective Rollins.
- Where's Kyle? - He's with your wife.
They're in the middle of an interview.
I don't think so.
I'm taking him home.
Well, we, uh, we're allowed to question him with the consent of one parent, which we have.
Look, I decide what happens with my son me.
Now where is Kyle? Mr.
Turner? Can I help you? I don't know what my wife agreed to, but Kyle is done talking.
I cannot risk him accidentally saying something that's gonna ruin his career.
- He's got too much to lose.
- Oh, I agree with you.
But we have two witnesses who say that they saw him - assaulting Jack.
- I don't care if you have 200 witnesses.
You have the wrong kid.
I guess I need to call a lawyer, don't I? Waste everybody's time and money.
Is this what you're telling me? That's not necessary.
Uh, if you wait here, I will let your wife and your son know that they're free to go.
Wait, so we we just we're turning this kid loose? The lab ran the hockey sticks.
They're all clean.
There's no blood, there's no DNA.
So Kyle must have gotten rid of the one he used after he saw us at the hospital.
- So we don't have enough to hold him.
- No, but we have Jack.
You and Fin, go to the hospital first thing in the morning and get him to tell you who attacked him.
So Jack, we talked to Timmy and Will and they told us what really happened.
We just need to hear it from you.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Look man, I get it, okay? These are your teammates, your friends, and you don't wanna rat them out.
But that's not what you're gonna be doing, because we already know who did it.
He was at the precinct hours ago and he feels terrible about what happened.
You talked to Kyle? Kyle? Kyle Turner? You said you didn't see who attacked you.
Oh, it can't be.
Timmy and Will, sure, they're idiots.
But Jack and Kyle have known each other since kindergarten.
They're inseparable.
You guys are sure it was him? Yeah, we're sure.
But we do need your son to confirm it.
Forget about the team, Jack, just go ahead and tell them.
I've never seen him like that before.
Who? Kyle, okay? Kyle.
It was like he was this whole other person.
Timmy and Will grabbed me.
I couldn't move.
Couldn't fight back.
Suddenly, Kyle had the stick.
And he looked at me all crazy and he And I just I don't know.
And then it was over.
I don't understand.
He came to see you here at the hospital, I If you don't mind, we need some time.
Alone.
Sure.
What's going to happen to Kyle? We're gonna arrest him.
Tell him that that I know he didn't mean it.
[somber music.]
[knocking.]
NYPD.
Yeah? Adam, right? We're looking for your parents.
Yeah, they're not here.
It's, uh, it's just me and Mark.
So Kyle's not here? My, uh, my dad called.
Kyle hurt his arm during practice.
They're at the hospital.
Okay, thank you.
What is this? What are you doing here? We have a warrant for your son's arrest.
- You're joking, right? - Jim, what's going on? I got this, Helen.
Kyle's still with the doctor.
I know it doesn't matter to you, but he might have broken his wrist.
How did that happen? Hockey practice.
You know, we got enough going on right now without you harassing us, okay? You don't wanna talk to us, that's your prerogative, but we are gonna wait here until your son is released.
And then we're going to arrest him.
Excuse me, Doctor, I'm Lieutenant Benson.
This is Detective Carisi.
We saw you in there with Kyle Turner.
- How is he? - Spiral fracture.
He'll be okay.
Uh, was he assaulted? Uh, actually, he's a person of interest in a case that we're investigating.
I see.
And you asked if he was assaulted, why? His injury suggests someone twisted his wrist, violently.
Which is hard to do playing hockey.
Hard, not impossible.
Can we take a look at the kid's medical records? Not without a subpoena.
There are laws We're SVU, we know the laws.
We also know that as a mandatory reporter, you're required to call us if you have any suspicions, so Do you? I found a few other spiral fractures on his x-ray.
It appears as if they went untreated.
So you're saying that it is possible that Kyle has been physically abused.
[tense music.]
Hey, Kyle.
How you doing? Your wrist must still be hurting, but Kyle, we need to take you down to the police station.
Because of what happened to Jack? - Mm-hmm.
- Yes.
Do we have to go now? Where's my dad? I need to talk to him.
Don't worry, he's gonna come with us too.
Okay? So how'd that happen? I got tripped up at practice.
Landed on my wrist sorta funny.
At practice? Okay, so somebody else can verify that? Well, it was only me and my dad.
He he didn't see it, though, when I fell.
Okay, well here's the thing, Kyle: we don't think you're telling us the truth.
And the doctor's pretty sure that's not the way it happened.
And your medical records show that that this isn't the first time that you've been injured this way.
I don't know what you mean.
Kyle, has anybody been getting physical with you? At home? Grabbing at you? No! - I-I fell.
- Kyle, listen to me.
We wanna help you.
And there's a real chance that you could go to prison for what you did to Jack.
But I thought only adults could go to prison.
Nope.
Sometimes kids go, too.
So you need to talk to us and tell us if somebody put you up to this or if somebody threatened you.
- You need to tell us that, okay? - What the hell are you How many times do I have to tell you - you do not have my permission - Hold on.
Look, we have more questions.
Not without our consent.
Actually, we don't need your consent in this situation.
What are you talking about? We have evidence that that your son has been abused.
Physically.
[laughs.]
Abused? That's ridiculous.
I already told them that I fell.
So we have two choices.
I can arrest Kyle right here, right now.
Or we can all go down to the precinct and talk this through.
Your other sons, too.
Fine.
Let's talk it through.
Get to the bottom of this.
'Cause we got nothing to hide.
So, uh, why am I here? We just wanna know a little bit more about your family.
Yeah, like what? Let's start with Kyle.
You two tight? Yeah, sure.
You know, he gets on my nerves sometimes, but you know, he's my little brother.
That's his job.
Would you ever do anything to hurt him? Beat him up? Something like that? You serious? No, no.
We're best friends.
We look out for each other.
Always have.
Always will.
Okay.
How about Kyle and your dad? How do they get along? Kyle and Jim have a great relationship.
He wants what's best for Kyle.
Does, uh, does he ever get rough with Kyle? No.
That is not something that goes on in our house.
'Cause, uh, your son's medical records tell a different story.
Mrs.
Turner, I don't I-I don't think you understand.
Kyle has committed a serious crime.
It's aggravated sexual assault.
He can be charged as an adult.
And if he's convicted, he's gonna go away.
But he's only a boy.
Which is why we want to give the prosecutor some reason to help your son.
But you're gonna have to help us out to do that.
How? You gotta tell us what's going on between Kyle and his dad.
At least do it for Kyle's little brother Mark.
Listen What you did to Jack, they're gonna lock you up for that.
But if you can tell me who really hurt your wrist I can't! Listen, if you're afraid of your dad, we can keep you safe.
We can get you away from him.
I love my dad.
He's just helping me become a better player.
Yeah, well It's not gonna matter when you're in prison.
You understand? This is just a misunderstanding.
That's all.
How do we make it go away? We don't.
We can't.
But we might be able to find a way to make his punishment less severe.
How? You admit to abusing Kyle.
Excuse me? [scoffs.]
Look, my parenting style might be old-school, but I'm never physical.
Kyle wants to be a great player.
I know how to get him there.
Came close to playing pro myself.
How do you explain the spiral fractures, all those untreated injuries? He's a hockey player.
Sometimes he gets hurt.
But he plays through the pain.
He doesn't complain like most of his pansy friends.
That's just who he is.
Well, we tried.
I mean, clearly, this family is not gonna budge.
So what do you wanna do? Kyle Turner, you're under arrest for aggravated sexual assault.
You have the right to remain silent Kyle, don't say anything.
I'll take care of this.
Where are you taking him? To be processed.
You people are unbelievable with this PC crap.
They're kids.
They were just screwing around.
Kyle will be arraigned in family court later this afternoon.
[somber music.]
- Hey.
- Hey.
How'd arraignment go? Released into his parents' custody.
I spoke to a lawyer at Corporation Counsel.
She said she's getting a lot of pressure from upstairs - to try Kyle as an adult.
- I thought we were just using that as a ploy.
He's just a kid.
There's been a lot more hazing incidents lately, and they wanna make an example.
I know he's our perp, but the kid's a victim too.
There's no doubt that father's doing a number on him, and the mother too.
- The mother? - Yeah.
She just sits there, watches it all happen, stands by silently? That's abuse.
I get what you're saying, but it's not that simple.
Yeah, it is.
Somebody lays a hand on Jesse, I'm gonna have something to say about it, I guarantee it.
Hold on, so this woman Helen, you don't think that she's a victim too? You think her husband's sending her roses every day? - Oh, come on.
- Well, it's not just about the physical abuse it's the shame of it.
I know that! And that's why bullies keep getting away with being bullies.
[phone vibrating.]
You're missing my point.
I'm not.
I'm hearing what you're Hey, Lieutenant.
All right, I'll meet you down there.
I gotta go meet Liv at the hospital, talk to Jack and his parents again.
All I'm saying is that sometimes it's not as easy as you think to be a hero.
Excuse me.
Hi, can you tell us where Jack Wilson's been moved to? He's not in his same room.
Are you with the Special Victims Unit? Yes.
Didn't someone call you? Call us about what? Jack.
He died 20 minutes ago.
He had a fever.
Um, they said all he needed was fluids, some antibiotics.
We didn't think anything of it.
Then his blood pressure started dropping.
They rushed him to intensive care, but They said it was an infection.
We are so sorry for your loss.
Someone needs to pay for this.
We'll be charging Kyle Turner with manslaughter.
Go ahead, charge Kyle.
But it's his sick son of a bitch father you should really be after.
How do you mean? Jim got into Kyle's head, turned him into a bully.
I've seen what he did to the older one, too.
Who knows how long Mark has before that lunatic starts in on him? You've witnessed abuse? He's always berating, pushing, grabbing.
Have you ever seen him hit Kyle? I didn't have to.
With guys like him, you can tell.
I didn't think it was my business, but all that pressure and rage it was only a matter of time.
If you ask me, his father is just as responsible as Kyle is for my son's death.
[both sobbing.]
Jack's parents were right.
Jim Turner looks good for this.
What do you mean? You found something? Maybe.
We canvassed the other parents on the team.
We found this cell phone video taken right after the game.
It looks like Kyle's father is giving him an order give Jack a beatdown or else.
- Where did this come from? - The goalie's mom.
She was waiting for her older son's game to begin.
She caught this accidentally.
Kyle comes out of the locker room.
He's in his street clothes.
He talks to his dad, gets an earful.
[muffled audio.]
We've got TARU, our tech experts, retrieving the audio from this video.
Pretty soon, we're gonna know exactly what your dad said to you.
- If he told you to hurt Jack - He didn't.
- You're sure about that? - Yes.
Listen, Kyle, Jack is dead.
And somebody's gotta be held responsible for that.
He answered the question, Detective.
Just tell them the truth, for God's sake! Adam, stop! Mom! [stammers.]
I mean Kyle will be fine.
Everything is going to be okay.
Mrs.
Turner, everything will not be okay.
That ship sailed once Jack stopped breathing.
If you wanna help your son, have him tell the truth.
And blame my husband? His father? Do you know what you're asking him to do? - Dad.
- What is this? What now? He didn't tell me to do anything.
[quietly.]
Okay.
If you say so.
The prosecutor will be charging Kyle with sexual assault and manslaughter.
As an adult.
[somber music.]
On the additional charge of manslaughter in the first degree, how does the defendant plead? Not guilty, Your Honor.
- People on remand? - We see no reason why the defendant shouldn't be released back into his parents' custody, pending trial.
Are the defendant's parents present? We are.
You are willing to take custody of your son, to see that he follows a curfew, ensure that he shows up for trial? Absolutely, Your Honor.
If that's the case, then I will release him into your custody.
But any infractions, and he will be remanded.
Next case.
- Adam! - This is crap.
My brother's going to jail.
Right? Look, why aren't you guys trying to help him? With Jack dead, the only thing that's gonna move the needle on this is Kyle testifying that your father told him to assault Jack.
Listen, he won't do it.
Okay? My my dad has just got him all twisted up.
Then help us.
Help us change his mind.
[phone rings.]
Carisi, SVU.
All right, Mrs.
Turner, just calm down.
All right, we'll be right over.
- Rollins, we gotta go.
- What's going on? Jim Turner just beat the hell out of Adam.
I'll call the local precinct.
[police radio chatter.]
- [pained groaning.]
- Adam.
Adam, we're getting you some help, okay? - What happened? - Adam just kept pushing Jim's buttons.
- I couldn't stop it.
- Where's your husband - right now? - He ran out of here.
- I don't know.
- Where's Mark? He's not here.
I sent him to my mom's.
Listen no, no, no, listen, Adam, don't move, we're getting you an ambulance.
All right, baby? Stay right there.
You needed a way to get Kyle to talk.
This is it.
I got it on video.
[dark music.]
Don't protect him anymore.
He doesn't deserve it.
You're letting Kyle go to jail for this! And you told him to do it.
- Didn't you? - Kyle will be fine.
Oh, no How is he going to be fine? Just stay the hell out of it! [overlapping shouting.]
Stay out of it! You know what the worst part is? He believes that your BS is actually helping him.
And now what, you're just gonna let him go down for it? - Keep talking - No, I'm not afraid of you! You're a loser! [muttering.]
And a coward! What did you call me? [grunting, thudding.]
Yeah? Who's a coward now? [screaming.]
Stop it! Stop I [click.]
Well, this should make Kyle flip.
Kyle's confused.
Jim has this hold over him.
Well, Helen, for God's sakes, don't you get it? Your son is gonna go away.
If I tell Kyle to testify, Jim goes to jail.
But he is abusing your sons.
He broke Kyle's wrist.
He beat the hell out of Adam.
He didn't mean to.
He loves them and they love him.
He's a good man.
- He just - He just what, has a bad temper, he gets impatient? That's a cop-out, Helen.
Every day, for the past five years, I wake up and say, "I'm going to take the boys and leave.
" But then he he does something that makes me see the other side.
He mows my mother's lawn or pays for her arthritis medication.
Or tells me that he he loves me.
And I say to myself, "This is a good man.
" - But then - He changes.
He gets abusive.
Because that's part of who he is too.
You're right.
It is.
It's just so hard to accept the fact that you that this is the man you picked to spend your life with.
To have children with.
So you keep trying to fix things.
Even though it's not fixable.
Listen Kyle's a boy.
You can fix him.
Okay? But first of all, you've gotta convince him to testify, to go on record and say that his dad forced him to assault Jack with that hockey stick.
Adam was right.
My dad he told me to do it.
He told you to assault Jack.
Yeah.
He wanted Jack to know that he couldn't screw up anymore.
Your dad told you to use the hockey stick? He says that's the way you're supposed to do it.
I don't even remember what happened.
I-I really didn't want to hurt Jack.
He was he was my friend.
Okay.
So you're ready to say in court that your dad told you to assault Jack.
He's still my dad.
I-I don't want him to get in trouble.
You know something, Kyle? When I first saw Jack laid up in that hospital, I was pretty upset.
I was angry at who did it.
Because right away, Jack reminded me of of me.
You see, I was the scrawny kid, way back when.
Guys in the neighborhood, they used to pick on me every day.
The worst was this [sighs.]
this kid, Bobby Bianchi.
One day when we were at school, he grabbed me by the hair and he he shoved my face through a plate glass window.
Must have hurt.
I was bleeding, I was all cut up.
The principal asked what happened.
Now I could have put an end to it.
Right there, all I had to do was say Bobby's name.
But I didn't.
Because I didn't want Bobby to get into trouble.
- He got away with it? - That's right.
Nobody ever knew what happened.
You know where Bobby is now? He's in Sing Sing for stabbing some poor sap to death during a bar fight.
And I always think, what if I would have said something? What if I just would have said something? Maybe that guy would still be alive.
I missed my shot, Kyle.
Not a day goes by that I don't regret it.
But this is your shot.
Right now.
And if not for you, Kyle, do it for your little brother.
Because what happens when he gets older, and you're not around to look after him? Hmm? You ever think about that? Look, if you're willing to talk to the judge, we can get this case sent back to Family Court, and you will get a reduced charge.
Which means do less time.
Okay.
I'll do it.
Okay, good.
And Kyle, we'll also need your help finding your father.
[somber music.]
Nice story, man.
Didn't know you're so quick on your feet.
You gotta do what you gotta do, right? - That's right.
- You didn't make that up, though, did you? That really happened to you, didn't it? So? What's got you so worried that I needed to come all the way out here? Everything's screwed up.
You told me to do that to Jack.
You said it was gonna help him.
Help the team.
Yeah, I know I said that.
And guess what? Not everything always goes according to plan.
Do you think I wanted any of this? We just gotta roll with it, that's all.
- They're gonna send me away.
- Hey, cut it out now.
Don't talk like that, all right? Listen, you're gonna be fine.
Stud athletes like you don't go to jail.
- The police said - Never mind them.
All right? You keep your head up, you keep your mouth shut and you let the lawyer do the rest.
Now you gotta stay focused, all right? You gotta think about all the good things to come.
Everything that's coming your way.
A few more years of this.
Then what? College puck.
And then you're gonna go pro.
And then, hey, when Mark gets a little bit older, can you imagine? We teach him.
You and me.
We toughen him up, we train him, we whip him into shape.
Then the Turner boys are the face of the league.
We can have our own dynasty! That's not gonna happen.
- Mr.
Turner.
- We've been looking everywhere for you.
- There's nowhere to go.
- It's best if you come with us quietly.
[tense music.]
Did you set me up? Are you wearing a wire? - Hey! You're under arrest.
- Everything I did, I did it for you.
You know that, right? Listen to me, listen to me.
Look at what you have.
- Hey, come on.
- Look at what you've accomplished! Huh? How did you get there, huh? Who taught you how to work for it? Kyle! Don't let them do this to me! I'm sorry, Dad.
[shouting fades.]
I let you down.
Come on, let's go.
A few years in juvie is a lot better than ten in state prison.
Small victories, I guess.
And Liv we got that father out of the house.
13 years too late.
