Silent Witness (1996) s21e10 Episode Script
Family - Part Two
1 Two traffic officers were first at the scene.
They found three bodies -- two young women and an elderly man.
Another body's since been found in a burnt out four-by-four.
- Hello, Bluebell.
- Get away from her! My father He's the one to blame.
- Mel has gone to the hospital.
- Is she OK? - She's been shot.
- Has she said anything? - It was Andy.
- He's on the run.
- One of the lorries is unaccounted for.
- Right, and I bet I know who's got that.
Apart from finding out where Andy is, identifying who he was with is our main priority.
- Any idea who this is? - Yeah, we've got him.
Michael Adams.
Listen, I can only give you 24 hours on this, OK? The gun you found under the dead man's car seat, it's not been sent over.
- It's evidence.
- Evidence that the gun is police issue.
This is all wrong, Clarissa.
All wrong.
Testator silens Costestes e spiritu Silentium Testator silens.
When were you last at Orchard House? I've not seen Andy in weeks.
He took out one of the articulated lorries on the 18th.
He couldn't afford to pay anyone, so probably ended up doing - a few jobs himself.
- The lorry wasn't returned to the depot.
Just like Andy to escape in a lorry with his name all over the side of it.
We've got some evidence that he was with someone on Christmas Eve.
Who? They're investigating.
You know what Andy's like -- women, men, you name it.
It's one of the reasons I left him.
Do you have any idea who that might have been? You think they were responsible for what happened? We don't know yet, but Laurence why am I here? Why are you telling me this? Is there something you need to tell me? According to Stevie's diaries, you and her weren't speaking to each other - You clearly don't have teenage kids.
- Zoe You think I could murder my own daughter? Andy? Sure.
His old man? Absolutely no problem, but the girls? You think I could point a gun at them, and If you'll excuse me, my daughter needs me.
What time were you back? I'm a teenager all over again.
Just asking.
How was the Red Lion? You made the paper.
There we all were, eating our Christmas lunch and there was you A whole family.
And we think WE'VE got problems.
Did you see Ryan? I thought he might have called, but it's not easy for him.
People were asking where you were, but I didn't tell them.
I didn't want to put them off their Christmas pudding.
To tell you the truth, I don't know how you do it.
I couldn't do what you do.
I doubt many could.
Are you coming back, or was that Christmas? Of course I'm coming back.
I said so, didn't I? I'm proud of you, son.
I thought Nikki was going to be here? She's doing Jack's job, had to be done first thing.
Oh, yeah, and where's Jack? He had to go to his dad's last night, and he wanted to talk to the DCI about the gun that still hasn't arrived.
Really? What about the sim card? He's going to ask about that, too.
I thought they wanted us to look at the body from the four-by-four.
The DI said it's on its way.
Right.
Well, Martin McMorris it is, then.
Postmortem.
December 26th, 8am.
Mum.
- Hello, love.
- Mum It's all right.
You don't have to do anything.
It's all over now, Mel.
Everything is going to be fine.
No-one can get to us here.
Have you got them yet? Mmm, looks like a heel.
Boot of some kind? I'm checking the database.
Look at this.
Did you ever keep a diary? Every January I started one, but then Mine was full of the most desperate angst, most of it made up.
- Are you reading Stevie's diary? - Well, I'm trying to.
Not only is her handwriting indecipherable, it's full of drawings and symbols that could mean anything.
But I don't think "M," the letter on the gift tag, means Melanie, cos I've found this entry.
"Must tell Mel the truth about M.
" Did you get this tyre mark? It's a a bike? - No.
- A scooter? Motorbike? Wheelbarrow? Hmm.
Still no sign of Andy or the Arctic.
And the gun.
You assured me you'd sent it to the Lyell.
- Don't worry, I've still got it.
- Why? Yesterday morning, I was called by my Chief Superintendent.
Apparently, there's an ongoing classified operation that - supersedes this investigation.
- What? I was urged to hold on to the gun, and hold off examining the four-by-four, and the body inside.
Were you also urged to remove the sim card from the phone we found? I don't know what you're talking about, and, frankly, Jack, I resent that implication.
There's a photo in there of the two of you cosying up at a clay pigeon shooting event.
I get to meet a lot of people in my new - role as Detective Chief Inspector.
- All right.
Yeah, I knew who Andy was, and I knew he'd been on trial for murder, he wasn't convicted -- in my opinion, he was a good man until proven otherwise and, besides, you can get information from a phone without the sim.
The phone was seriously damaged by the fire.
The serial number's illegible, so we don't know who the service provider was, and without that sim card What about Andy's service provider? Any information from them? No calls or messages between the 18th and the 23rd, but then quite a few to a number, which could possibly belong to a burner phone -- the type used by undercover police officers.
All right, Jack, - I'm as frustrated as you are - Are you? .
.
but let me assure you, I will not rest until I've ascertained the truth of what's happened round here.
- OK? - OK.
Apart from the gunshot wounds, there are indications that the deceased sustained a number of heavy blows.
We've got severe bruising, right across the body, defused red in colour.
Two classic entry wounds to the chest.
Stippling around the margin of the wounds where there are burn marks and some slight tears.
I would estimate that the distance from which he was shot was .
.
was point blank range.
Point blank range.
The tissue samples taken from under Martin McMorris' ring? Yeah, what about them? It wasn't father fighting son as we suspected.
It was Martin, but with a man named Vernon Rye.
Please don't, Mr Rye.
I've already seen four bodies riddled with bullets this Christmas holiday, let's not make it a fifth.
Hey, you be careful in there.
It's all I've got.
That your bike, is it? You're all here cos I nicked a bike? I knew things had changed this last nine years, - but isn't this a bit over the top? - Get moving.
The boots are wellingtons, size seven or eight There are some at the house.
And Jack found a pair in Vernon Rye's caravan.
He also has a bike and a motive for being there.
Why would he have come down here? Maybe we're missing something.
Morning.
Morning.
Any news on DI Gibbs? She's still in a critical condition, I'm afraid.
I was wondering when the lake was going to be searched.
Soon, I hope.
We're prioritising our resources into the search for Andy.
It seems that Christmas has slowed everything down.
I understand you've offered to take some things over to Mel.
- Yes.
- Would you do that now? I'm going over there.
She's awake.
- Of course.
- I'd like you to come with me.
What for? I We have a suspect in custody who I think Mel may well be able to identify.
- I don't know, I - Dr Alexander, she trusts you.
You saved her life.
Please.
- Pyjamas and knickers, I mean, that's what I'D want.
- Yeah.
Rimonabant? They help release serotonin.
They're illegal.
To suppress the appetite.
Very popular amongst teenagers, but the side effects are awful.
Perhaps she needed to keep her weight down for riding.
Dr Alexander? Coming.
Is this about the other night? I can't believe Martin.
I never thought he'd be one to grass me up.
How do you know Martin? He used to run a scaffolding yard, I did some jobs for him.
- You again.
- Mr Hodgson just wants to take a few samples from you.
A few swabs is all.
Will that be OK? Were you wearing these on Christmas Eve? Don't have much else.
This is not about some punch-up, is it? Martin McMorris was found shot dead on Christmas morning.
Holy shit! And you think it was ME? - Was it? - No way! I just wanted me money.
Me and Martin, we're mates.
You're looking for gunshot residue.
You know the drill.
It's how they nailed me last time.
If you didn't fire a gun, there'll be no residue.
Nothing to worry about.
Roll your sleeves up.
Where did the fight take place, Vernon? Back of the King and Queen.
Any witnesses? Don't know.
We were off our tits.
What was it about? Relax your hand.
What are fights usually about? Women, money, football.
I served time for that man and he owes me, big time, but he's all, "Money's all gone and it's backs to the wall.
" And I take him outside and I let him know what it's really like to have your back to the wall.
Then he tells me he can get the money off his son Andy who's loaded and he shows me pictures of Andy's house.
I mean, have you seen it?! Look, when I last saw Martin, he was getting in a cab singing Rudolph the red pissed reindeer.
- Did you follow him? - On me bike, you mean? - Did you follow him to Orchard House? - No, I didn't! And you better prove I didn't.
Were you with Bluebell when she? I did my best to make her as comfortable as possible.
You used to have a horse.
You remember me saying that? You were upset.
Do you remember anything else, Mel? He has a photo he wants you to look at.
Do you recognise that man? Are you sure? We have evidence he was fighting your grandfather.
No.
Grandad was fighting with Dad.
Shouting and screaming.
Me and Stevie and Gabrielle came back from church and Grandad was off his face .
.
knocking stuff off the dining room table and Dad was white with anger.
I went upstairs to my room.
Best out of the way when he gets like that.
And then .
.
bang! So you didn't actually see who started the shooting.
She was upstairs, in her bedroom.
What happened to Stevie? I told you what happened.
There was an explosion.
- The four-by-four? - The four-by-four? The one Mike drove? Mike was there? Who's Mike? He's a friend.
He works for Andy.
Has he been killed as well? We believe the man driving the four-by-four has been identified as Michael Adams.
No, no, please.
You need to stop now.
I just had to get to Bluebell.
I just had to get away.
Shh.
I had to get away from So, Christmas Eve, we know Vernon Rye and Martin McMorris had a fight round the back of the King and Queen pub.
McMorris getting in a cab at 12.
35 am.
He owes Rye thousands of pounds, and he tells him he's going to get it from his son at Orchard House.
Well, I wouldn't trust him, would you? - I'd follow him there and make sure.
- Here, watch this.
Here's Rye unlocking his bike, clearly a bit worse for wear, then he cycles off in a different direction.
That doesn't prove he didn't steal a car or get into a taxi and go to Orchard House.
But crucially, there's no gunshot residue on either his skin - or on his clothes.
- You're sure they weren't washed? The shirt he was wearing that night is still covered in Martin's blood from the fight.
Given Martin was shot at point blank range, that suggests Vernon Rye wasn't the man who pulled the trigger.
He'd have been covered in GSR.
When did you identify Michael Adams? That's not his real name.
He was an undercover police officer working for McMorris.
Does that explain why the four-by-four and his body haven't been sent over to The Lyell? Nikki, my hands are tied.
Excuse me.
DI Baker -- "The Lyell confirm Vernon Rye unlikely to have been involved "in shootings.
" Which brings us back to Andy -- did you find anything this morning? Footwear marks across the lawn leading towards to the lake, and a tyre mark which I think probably belongs to a wheelbarrow.
- What would Andy be doing with a wheelbarrow? - I don't know.
Thanks.
Right, so we know that Andy was with someone else Christmas Eve.
Is there any evidence that THAT person's been murdered? Not that we've found so far, but that doesn't mean that they weren't murdered somewhere else and then taken.
So he could have murdered them, dumped them, but why didn't he dump all the other bodies? The neighbours heard "fireworks" shortly after 1.
00, and then the police officers arrived just after half past.
- He only had a 30-minute window.
- All right.
What if it wasn't a body? It's my belief that Michael Adams, working undercover, was investigating Andy's haulage firm.
We know that Andy took a lorry out on the 18th of December, possibly to pick up a consignment of Russian automatic weapons.
Now, there's no sign of weapons at the haulage depot So you think he took them to the house? We've searched everywhere else.
Apart from the ones we found in Andy's office, there's no sign of the other weapons.
The only place we haven't searched is - The lake.
- The lake, yeah.
The lake.
Is that it? How exactly am I meant to get back to me caravan? Do you want a lift? Yeah.
My brother's inside.
What did he do? Does it matter? No.
We all never did it.
Was it you who proved me innocent? Science did that.
My family stopped coming to see me a few years into me sentence.
I thought, "I'll be all right, who cares?" But I DID care.
In the end, they're the only ones who really know you .
.
who'll give you a second chance.
- What's your name? - Jack.
Happy Christmas, Jack.
And a better New Year.
What are you doing out of bed? Mel? It's all right.
It's all right.
It's OK.
Oh, love.
- Hi.
- Want some tea? No, thanks.
So, Michael Adams is the name of the man in the four-by-four.
Our undercover cop.
I'm thinking that he could be the M in Stevie's diary.
"Must tell Mel the truth about M.
" What do you think it means? An undercover cop bought a 19 - year-old an iPhone for Christmas? A reconditioned one.
It wasn't new.
- Thanks.
- You never make tea.
Happy Christmas.
Do you think that Martin didn't know that his son had bankrupted the business, and that everything was lost? I don't know.
Not an easy thing to own up to.
Thank you.
So, Martin McMorris owes Vernon Rye money.
Goes to see his son, asks him to help out.
But son can't help Dad out because he doesn't have any.
You examine the shoes you found in the master bedroom? - Just about to.
- Thank you.
Andy's upstairs sipping the last of the champagne, snorting the last of the cocaine, in walks the old man demanding money he doesn't have.
Add an automatic weapon to that lethal cocktail What we know is whoever killed Martin would have been covered in gunshot residue, and the only person we haven't been able to test who we know was there is Andy McMorris.
- I claim my prize.
- What? - I knew I'd seen it somewhere before.
- What? - The necklace.
Who's that? That's Zoe's sister, Jackie Emmans.
She was with Andy on Christmas Eve? You're going to be fine, sweetheart.
Yeah.
Thanks for coming, Auntie Jackie.
She's going to be all right, isn't she? - Mrs Emmans? - Yes.
Just a quick question regarding the events at Orchard House.
Is that your necklace, Mrs Emmans? I'm so sorry.
I was with Andy Christmas Eve.
I was going to tell you - You BITCH! - Get her out of here! - Yep, yeah.
Get off me! Calm down, OK? Two days ago, I had a family.
Now look at me.
So how long had you and Andy been having sex for? Couple of months.
After Zoe left him, I went round to collect some stuff, and We've always had this flirty thing going on, and Well, it just happened.
What time did you get there on Christmas Eve? He sent a message about 10.
30 on WhatsApp.
Stevie and Mel were going to church, and so "I've left the gate open -- get over here quick.
" And what did you tell your husband? It was Christmas Eve.
I had tonnes of wrapping to do .
.
and, erm .
.
he should go upstairs to bed.
He's not been well.
What time did you get to Orchard House? About 11.
45.
I saw the au pair leaving with the girls.
And what did you and Andy do? We had a drink.
Had sex.
Any drugs involved? - Coke is Andy's thing, not mine.
- How long were you there? About an hour, not long.
His dad walked in on us.
Mm-hm.
What time was that? Around 1.
00.
And what was Martin's reaction when he saw his son screwing his sister-in-law? I thought Andy was going to kill him.
He was swearing .
.
shouting.
I was scared.
I was really scared.
And then what happened? I got out of there as quickly as I could.
What do you think? You left your necklace.
It's broken.
Did someone rip it off your neck? Andy was crazy.
I've never seen him like that before.
And what were you wearing? - What were you wearing? - A red dress and stockings.
I am now showing Mrs Emmans two items of underwear -- a bra and knickers.
We retrieved those from your linen basket in the bathroom.
Would you care to explain how gunshot residue was found on them? I never touched a gun.
I swear! - And what about Andy? Did you ever see him touch a gun? - No.
- I promise you on my kids' lives.
- OK.
OK.
Where was Andy going on the 18th? - How would I know? - He took a truck from the depot.
I was at a school nativity on the 18th.
- You knew where he was.
- No, I didn't know where he was.
- Where is he now? - In hell, as far as I'm concerned.
Cooke believes Andy McMorris was using the lake to store guns.
We're going to be here all night.
What do you mean, there's not enough evidence? Jackie Emmans is lying through her teeth.
What about the gunshot residue on her underwear? McMorris must have had residue on his hands, and it transferred onto Jackie's clothing when he undressed her.
So you're telling us that Jackie didn't fire the gun that killed the rest of the family? No, I'm saying there's insufficient evidence from her clothing.
Right, where does this leave us? Exactly where we started.
- We need to find Andy.
- Have a look at this.
This is the 18th of December.
Andy leaves the house, gets in his car, drives off through the gates.
And this -- this is Zoe arriving on the 21st.
She's come to pick up her kids to go and see her mum.
Now, we don't see Andy again till the 23rd of December.
The day that we know he drove back through Dover.
We've got images of him on the M25, M20 and then he goes off at the junction.
We know that Andy came back to the house.
- Look, we need to find this lorry.
- Right, well, have a look at this.
This is Andy returning to the house, the 23rd of December.
Right, what's he got there, then? - Mistletoe.
So what? - It's not just the mistletoe.
We found mud on his car.
We tested it.
It's a match for the mud we found on the boot upstairs in the bedroom at Orchard House.
Traces of calcium.
- Chalk.
- So, Andy leaves the house on the 18th and he comes back on the 23rd.
We think wherever he left his car during that period - is where he left the lorry.
- Right.
This is McMorris Haulage.
And this -- this is a chalk pit.
- Wow.
- It's a two-mile walk.
Bingo.
Call it in.
Clear! They've got something! You're kidding me.
We've found guns.
We've found Andy McMorris.
Brought across the lawn in a wheelbarrow that was also found in the lake.
I thought Mel told you it was her father who did this.
Yes, but she was in shock, so Maybe she's covering for someone.
Who? Who? If it wasn't Andy, who is it? Clarissa mentioned that Andy was on trial for attempted murder, and the trial collapsed.
Could it have been someone connected to that? We're looking into that, but it's highly unlikely.
Isn't it time we looked at the four-by-four, and at the body of Michael Adams? An undercover police officer investigating the importation of some serious weaponry.
Andy was clearly mixing with some very dangerous people.
And what, Jack? What do you think it was? A hit? What, he's crossed the Russian mafia, has he? Maybe that's what Mel meant -- that her father was to blame, for bringing this on the family.
I think it's time we get the four-by-four back to The Lyell so we can start doing our jobs.
When it was found, the body was in the so-called pugilistic posture, curled up, fists gripped tight.
So we've got full thickness burns across most of the body, particularly the right side of the head, the right shoulder, upper chest, right hip.
As the skin has burned, we've got breaches.
Significant ones on both calves, right and left thighs, right hip, right elbow Yes, and left elbow.
He WAS hit by a bullet.
We have an entry wound, left side of the neck, ten centimetres below the external auditory meatus.
The fire has destroyed any reliable evidence of soot stains or burns around it.
Did the bullet kill him? Hard to say, but from its appearance, and location, I'd say it was probably not in itself fatal.
So was he alive when the four-by-four caught fire? Soot in the trachea, down towards both lungs.
- Indicates Mr Adams was still alive when the fire started.
- Jesus.
As the fire caught hold, burning the various man-made materials in the car, they'll have given off significant amounts of cyanide and carbon monoxide, which he would have inhaled.
Hold on That is a sim card.
What, you think Adams know he was going to die and, what, decided to swallow it? Maybe.
Wow.
OK.
I need to see what's on that.
Merry Christmas.
A tracking device.
Just what I've always wanted! A tracking device that not only tracks where a vehicle is, but if it's incapacitated in some way, - it automatically sends a signal - A signal to the minder, who called it in from a phone box outside Reading Station.
What happens now? Mum? It's Laurence.
Hi.
OK.
I understand.
I'll get there as soon as I can.
They want me to identify your dad.
Andy's phone, Stevie's phone, Mel's phone and the sim card we found in Michael Adams.
Andy called and sent messages to Michael Adams, he clearly trusted him.
Stevie, the older sister, also sent messages.
In the last month, they got more and more suggestive, invitations out, promises of intimacy.
She also sent him some quite intimate photos, but Adams seems to have kept his distance.
That's good to hear.
Did you find anything on the sim card? Not very much.
Most of the calls he made and messages had been deleted.
Yeah, well, the last thing he would have wanted was to be found out as an undercover police officer.
Was it Andy who called Adams on Christmas Eve? No, it was Mel who called him.
We know she trusted him.
A desperate call for help.
I don't think I can do this.
You can take as much time as you like.
No.
Please.
I'm afraid we do need the body formally identified.
This way.
So if Adams deleted most of his messages and calls, why did he swallow the sim card? Because he was saving something for us to find.
Stored on this card was a landline number for a place in Reading.
- A minder.
- Exactly.
There was also a message he received earlier in the day which he didn't delete -- "What if it's not all over by Christmas?" - Who sent that? - We don't know.
Right, let's call it.
You sent Michael Adams a text.
He said it would be all over by Christmas.
I made sure of it.
I never should have married him.
Everyone said I was mad, but I was in love, and determined to make it work.
With my father's money, we built the most amazing house, but it was never enough.
I was never enough for any of them.
All Mel could think about was her precious bloody horse, and as for Stevie .
.
thrown out of school for dealing drugs, and blaming me.
Me! It wasn't me who screwed everything up, everything we had.
And you know what Andy's big plan was? Guns! Smuggling guns! And then he applied for sole custody.
We'd agreed we wouldn't fight for the kids, that they would be wherever they wanted to be, and I went round there with a letter from my solicitor.
I would have killed him then, but he wasn't there.
I told Mike I was going to the police, I was going to destroy Andy, and he told me the police were already onto him, and that it would all be over by Christmas, but then it hit me .
.
if Andy goes down, he'll make sure I go down with him, and I wasn't going to let that happen.
No way.
No way.
It's Christmas Eve.
So at 11.
45, the au pair, Gabrielle, took Stevie and Mel to midnight mass.
- Bye, Dad.
- Take care, yeah? Look after my girls, yeah? The girls drove to the church and passed Jackie Emmans, who, after getting a message from Andy, was waiting for them to leave.
Andy left the gates open, switched off the CCTV, and awaited Jackie's arrival.
- How are you doing? You all right? - Yeah, I'm good.
Jackie only had a couple of hours before her husband would miss her, so they had a quick drink and headed upstairs.
Later, in the master bedroom .
.
we know that Andy and Jackie drank champagne, and that Andy snorted some cocaine.
We also know that McMorris loved his guns .
.
which might explain how Jackie got gunshot residue .
.
on her underwear.
Andy! Stay there.
And later, his father, Martin, arrives .
.
we think around 12.
50.
The old man walks in, catches them having sex, and an argument ensues.
Jackie says she left the house at around 1.
00.
And Zoe, according to her confession, also arrives at 1.
00.
But Jackie never mentioned seeing Zoe either in the house or on her way out.
But I thought Zoe said one of her motives for what happened was her seeing Jackie and Andy in bed together.
Yeah, but I don't think she meant that literally.
She said she saw Jackie leaving the house.
The only thing we know for certain is that Jackie drove past the police who were called to the house, six miles away, at 1.
20.
Who's going to pay for this bloody lot, then, eh? What are you doing, you fool? Eh? I bet Zoe don't know what you're up to.
And you're going to go and tell her, are you? For a price, I might not.
Zoe also said she came home and saw Andy and his father arguing.
Happy bloody Christmas.
You've got what's coming, love.
She said that Martin was laughing at her, and told her that Andy and Jackie had been having sex upstairs.
- At least he kept it in the family, eh? - Oi! - Get out before I throw you out! - Zoe went in to the study.
She opened the drawer, and picked up the machine gun.
And, as soon as she saw Andy's dad, she started shooting.
She said Andy ran through the kitchen.
She followed him, firing the gun as she went, accidentally shooting Stevie, who was making herself a hot chocolate.
She ran out, she opened fire.
She killed Andy, but she also shot the horse and seriously wounded Mel.
Who had climbed out of her window and made it across the paddock.
Zoe then made her way back through the house.
She heard Gabrielle, the au pair, coming up the stairs to see what had happened.
Ah-Ah-Ah! She told her to take a car and leave the house.
It's at this point she saw the four-by-four arriving.
Why did she kill Michael Adams? She said she didn't know who it was, and that she was so out of her mind, that she just opened fire.
Can I just say that none of this really makes much sense? What did the text mean? "What if it's not all over by Christmas?" From what I understand, the consignment of illegal guns was to be sold on Boxing Day.
The undercover operation would see Andy and his buyers arrested.
Michael knew this was going to happen, - but he wanted to reassure Zoe.
- Reassure Zoe? About what? All right, OK, I know there's discrepancies.
I'm sure, in the weeks to come, Zoe will clarify exactly what's happened here.
In the meantime, thank you all for your hard work.
What? You think Zoe made it all up? I think a lot of what she said in her statement doesn't coincide with the facts as we know them.
He said that Mel was possibly covering for someone.
- Mm.
- Did she say anything about her mother to you? I'm seeing her later.
I promised to get her some more things.
I heard on the news that they'd found the father's body in the lake.
Is that right? We'll see you back at The Lyell.
Mel must be devastated.
I'm sure, when she's feeling a bit better, you could visit her.
I was wondering what to do with Mel's present.
She'd brought her father some freshwater fish for the lake.
When did she buy them? Well, they were delivered a few days ago, and then she came round on Christmas Eve to make sure they were all OK.
She was really looking forward to giving them to him.
She so wanted this Christmas to be just perfect.
- Hello.
- Did you do the tests on Mel's clothes? Have you got the results? I'm wondering if there's been some kind of Christmas mix-up.
What do you mean? Well, we know Melanie was shot and so her blood would be on the dress, and we know she tried to help Bluebell.
Who lost a lot of blood.
But there are also traces of Martin's blood, of her father's, and her sister Stevie's.
- I'll call Nikki.
- And I'll call Cooke and update him.
Shit.
Turn round.
"Must tell Mel the truth about M.
" "Rimonabant.
"Side effects may include severe depression, anxiety, mood changes.
" Mel? Mel! Right, listen, Mel's gone missing.
Is Nikki still at the house? - Yep.
- I've tried her.
Phone's dead.
Right, I'm calling for backup.
Mel! - Mel! - Leave me alone! I knew you'd find out.
Oh, Mel.
Dad always told me that everything was going to be OK.
Look at it! How can you lose all this? But that wasn't why you took the gun from your dad's office, was it? You were jealous of your sister.
- Mel - Leave me alone! Mel! Mel! Why did you call Michael Adams? He was the only one that cared about you and Bluebell.
Stevie knew how much Mike meant to me.
He didn't know how I felt, but she did, and she had to have him.
When I phoned Mike, he tried to explain .
.
but Grandad was laughing at me, and Dad I bought Dad these stupid fish .
.
for his stupid lake.
All that money wasted.
I was going to put everyone in there, but then .
.
the police arrived, and You needed to cover your tracks.
It was like I'd suddenly woken up.
Is that when you tried to shoot yourself? I went into the woods .
.
where they'd never find me.
I wrapped the gun in the blanket .
.
and pointed it at my heart.
Dr Alexander? Sergeant Chainey! I'm with Mel! I know.
DCI Cooke called it in.
She's very scared.
If I go out there now, they'll shoot me.
And it'll all be over.
I told you I once had a horse.
How did it make you feel, riding Bluebell? It was the only time I ever felt completely free.
But my horse died, and I stopped.
But you know what? I want to ride again.
To feel that again.
Isn't that what you want, Mel? To feel like that again? To feel that alive? - I've got one more present.
- Look at that one! - Thank you for my Christmas presents.
- I'm glad you like them.
How are you doing? Maybe this is how we should do Christmas Day next year.
Your folks on Boxing Day, a new tradition.
- Just me and you? - Mm.
I'd like that.
I wish it could be Christmas everyday Thank you for coming with me now.
Still think it's a waste of time.
He's not going to want to see me, Dad.
You don't know that.
He's your brother.
That's sweet.
Aaah! They're beautiful! - Awesome, cheers! Thanks very much.
- Who's that? Is that you? You didn't have any other presents? Not even a card or anything? Only from Secret Santa at The Lyell.
Don't you think you should open that? OK.
That's a Santa secret that needs to be opened.
- Look at my tree! - Wow! It's very festive.
An open ticket to Washington! What time is it there? Just after 4.
30.
OK, well, you'd better hurry up, because the last flight's at 9.
00pm.
- What? - It's all booked.
I spoke to Clarissa, everything is fine.
I can't! No, she spoke to Jack, and then spoke to Thomas You're serious? "Happy to get rid of you", I think is what they said.
So, what do you think? - I think I'd better get packing! - Yes, hurry! Oh, wait.
Hang on, don't go anywhere.
Oh, hi.
Merry Christmas! Testator silens Costestes e spiritu Silentium.
