All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
As well as being assigned to our patrol station, I'm assigned to our marine unit.
Once a week, we do underwater scans of the port as well as their patrols of the waterways.
So we'll go out, check the airport, check the port of Oakland and of high interest areas within the county.
I grew up around the water, and having that as a secondary duty allows me to still be out in the water and enjoy that aspect.
I'm gonna contact this guy's riding his bikes in the middle of the street, no rear light, no headlight.
What's up? Come here.
Come here! You want me to chase you? If I chase you, you're going to jail, I'm telling you that right now.
Now get off your bike.
What's up, man? - Get off the bike.
- I'm off of it.
Huh? How you been? Relax! Chill out.
Where you going? Greg to Adam 4.
I got one running towards Mission, soon going to Creekside.
Once 148, white male, 5-10, 170, white sweatshirt, black pants.
Stop running! Stop! Ah, we got him in the restaurant alley.
He's behind the restaurant fence.
Where did he run? That way.
Right this way? See, he hopped that fence right there.
Yeah.
lost a visual of him.
He had went behind that fence right there.
I mean, it's going to be those apartments.
I saw him running down this back alley here and hopped the fence.
We got units set up on the back.
We're going to go around the back door and check the residence.
Is this where he lives-- inside of here? Nah.
Kick back inside there.
He lives inside here.
Oh.
Is he in here right now? Man, no idea.
He went for a bike ride.
That's it.
Sheriff's Office! Come to the front door.
Put your hands up.
Nothing in them.
Think we're good? Yeah.
Well, uh, one, two I'll go three and then you'll go left.
All right, one.
Watch out.
That glass might break.
Good job, Todd.
Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's Office! Come out with your hands up.
You get left, I get right.
Sheriff's Office! Hold that door.
Got it.
Hold it.
Stand by.
Go on.
Cat.
There's a cat right there.
Sheriff's Office.
Go ahead, go on, go on.
Stand up.
Stand up.
- Now you get up.
- Stand up! Let me see your hands.
If you try and fight it, you're going to go down, you understand? Hey! I put my money in my pocket, okay? I run because I'm just trying to call my baby's mommy.
Mommy! Ow! Stop resisting! Stop resisting! Put your hands behind your back! We ain't playin' with you, my man! I know, but you're fucking me up for no reason, man, in front of my kid.
We got a positive back here.
Watch that positive.
That's fucking unfair, man.
I ain't do nothing but run.
Okay, stand up.
'Cause I got no bill warrant, man.
That's all.
So I ran, get my baby mommy, so she can ahold of my fucking - kid so she could watch her here 'cause - Let's clear this.
We gotta clear this.
Let's go, son.
Sorry, man, I didn't mean to 'cause all of you (bleep).
Thank you very much.
You know, you still gotta be crazy, you understand? No, I'm not bumping crazy.
I'm just wasn't I'm tired, bro, man.
You tensing up on me? I ain't got no reason to act, no stupid reason not acting, okay? Just want some water from the faucet, please.
I'm dehydrated.
Are you high right now? Smoked a little bit of weed and drinking.
What about meth? Ain't nothin' in my system, nothing in the mouth.
What are your warrants for? Under the influence.
So you run from us, hide in the house, in the den, with How old's your daughter? - Four.
- She's four years old.
Knowing that we're going to kick in your door, and we're going to come in there with guns to find you.
Why would you put your daughter through that? I don't understand the thinking behind that.
It's cause you don't care.
Yeah, I care and love my fucking kid, and I knew you guys were gonna come here, and she was even telling me to answer the door and sound like you guys left at first, and I started crying.
I was still trying to get ahold of my girlfriend and my ex.
The baby mother, in other words, and as soon as she answers, so I could tell her, bitch, it's all clear.
I knew she'd probably show up, in, like, five minutes so she could take care of the baby, and you guys would've probably opened the door anyways, you know, I mean, I'm going to jail tonight as far as I seen it.
- I'm sorry - That's why you ran 'cause of your warrants? Yes.
I got a no bail and I go to court.
I'm supposed at court on Monday, and they'll remand me anyways.
How come you didn't fight me back then? - You thought you won - I won that fight.
'Cause you looked like you won.
You were about to round up and try and fight me.
Did that even run through your mind or no? Hell no, it didn't run through my mind.
I was scared.
So when I first contact, why didn't you stop? You were on your bike, I turned on my over headlights, spotlight.
You rode towards me, then you changed your mind.
You rode away.
- Why what Yeah.
- I can't tell you were a cop or not.
Did you notice the red lights? No, I didn't.
The headlight was all up in my face, and I can't see fucking shit, man.
The bad guys busted in my house, you'll be like, "Ooh.
" Who'd you think I was? I don't know.
That's why I was like, "Who are you?" Did you hear me say that when I went by you? 'Cause you like swerved at me.
- And I thought you was I was like - Kind of a strange question, though, right? - I'm a deputy, I mean so you know some - Yeah.
Well, I mean guy trying to rob you? Yeah.
You never know, man.
That doesn't make much sense looking back, though, right? Red lights, uniform, patrol car.
Oh, well, forgot about those, man.
All right.
So you understand you're going to jail for the warrants and for running? Yeah.
When we actually contacted them in the residence, he was laying in bed with his four-year-old daughter, kind of hugging on to her.
- He's in her shelter, and - Like he's been there all night? Like he'd been there all night.
Told me he ran because of the warrants, felt like he made a bad decision, but at that point, it was too late.
Yeah, we're used to that.
But everything worked out.
Yeah.
I was on my way to lunch one day, and see these guys running for no apparent reason, so I decide to follow 'em.
After about a block or so, a dye pack goes off in the guy's backpack.
Turns out they just robbed a bank down the street.
Chased 'em over a couple of fences and caught 'em.
Almost felt sorry for the poor kid.
Just turned 18 years old, first time he's ever committed a crime.
Right now, we're headed to a, uh, chain of three nightclubs in the area.
Had a lot of drug complaints in it.
Figured it's a weekend night, there's gonna be a lot of foot traffic out there, we're gonna get out, talk to some people.
See what we find.
Hey, how we doing? About to go in here.
You about to go in there? Yeah.
I'm just smoking this cigarette.
You are? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
Where's your other hand at? - He's got something on him.
- Not in our car.
He's got something on him.
Wait, in the backseat.
Step out of the car, player.
Turn around, face the car.
Turn around, face the car.
- Hey, stop - All right.
No, turn around and face the car.
Put your hands behind your back.
I got I got nothin' on me.
That's all right.
I know, you just shoved it in between the seats.
No, I didn't! Ma'am, step out of the car.
I'll do that right here.
That's fine.
Plus seatbelt.
Put everything down on the seat.
- Set all your stuff down.
- I'm just dropping it right here, right here.
Set all your stuff down.
That's fine.
Turn around and place your hands behind your back.
How old are you? I'm 22.
Bring her over here.
All right.
From this point forward, all three of you are being detained for our narcotics investigation.
We're gonna talk to you in a second.
Before we do so, we're gonna advise you of your rights.
All right.
Each one of you have the right to remain silent.
If you choose to waive that right, anything you say can, and will, be used against you in a court of law.
You have the right to consult with an attorney before you answer any questions, and have an attorney present when you answer any questions.
If you cannot afford an attorney, the court's gonna appoint one to you.
- Do you understand your rights, sir? - Yes, sir.
- Do you understand your rights, sir? - Yes, sir.
Do you understand your rights, ma'am? Yes, ma'am I mean, yes, sir.
Okay.
Based on what we saw you do Don't Based on what we saw you do, and what we see in your vehicle, we're gonna finish conducting a search of this vehicle.
- All right, before we do so - Y-Y'all say I put it between the seats.
any-any-anything you want to tell me about what's in your car? Nobody knows anything? Nobody knows anything.
Yeah.
Yeah? What you know? What's in the car.
What's in the car, ma'am? Some weed.
Okay, where's the weed at, ma'am? In the in the car.
Where in the car, please? Right there.
In right there, where? Be specific, please.
In the back? - The very back? - Yes.
How much weed is in the car? Approximately? Like three.
Three ounces? Three grams? Three pounds? Three ounces.
Three ounces? Okay.
Don't get froggy.
Is it is it your weed? Nah.
It's somebody else's I just got it from somebody.
You got it from somebody? Yeah.
Wh-what are you going to do with it? I was gonna smoke it.
Three ounces? How how about these gentlemen here? They know anything about the weed? No.
Y'all talk about the weed in the car? Don't know anything? No, we's just coming out here to the club.
According to the female, she has approximately three ounces of marijuana back here, in all this stuff.
And it's probably in a bag.
And this looks like something a female would carry.
And we have packing packaging materials and what do you know? Bingo.
Uh, that's one bag.
She claims she has three ounces.
No.
Uh I think she got ripped off, 'cause that am That's probably maybe, like, an ounce and a half.
Maybe two.
Unless they smoked up an ounce of it.
Unfortunately for her, still enough to get her a felony charge of possession with intent to distribute marijuana, more than a half ounce.
A lot of people kind of, like, look past females.
They always look for the typical drug dealer, and, um, you'd be surprised who's out here actually selling it.
Oh, yeah, you can smell it from here.
Is he vicious? No, she's a sweet little dog.
Okay.
This dog's a yeah.
His story was he wasn't doing anything.
He was just sitting here.
I got pictures of that.
All right.
That's originally what I saw.
Probably about a quarter ounce.
The officers who approached the car, when we first walked up, approached the car from the passenger's side.
Saw the, uh, rear seat passenger, the black male with the baseball cap, uh, shoving that item in the seat.
So he's gonna get charged with the possession of, uh, of marijuana.
Civil possession at this point.
My officer saw you palming the weed.
- I promise you that - I find the weed in the back seat, where you were sitting.
It's not weed.
Yeah, we found we found it.
About a quarter ounce of weed, sitting in the, in the, uh, in the back seat where you were sitting.
That ain't mine.
It ain't yours? Who else was in the back is it the dog's? The dog had the weed? No.
Okay, there was nobody back there in the back of the car but you and the dog.
I'm telling you, it ain't mine.
- I mean, I had a blunt - You smoke weed, you got you got rolling papers.
Y-You got, you got your thing you got everything but the weed.
And the only weed that was in the back seat is not yours.
Now, you want to try this again? - Yeah.
- All right.
- Tell me what happened.
- All right.
Earlier he picked me up from the beach.
I had, like, a quarter on me.
And we smoked a blunt.
That's why I got that package.
Mm-hmm.
And then I-I swear that I didn't know about the weed in the car.
Which weed are you talking about? You talking about the weed in the back of the car? Yeah.
I didn't know about that.
Okay.
Where-where's the quarter you had? Uh uh, I put it in the back of the seat.
You put it in the back of the seat? But that was way before y'all came, though.
Okay.
So I I don't understand how y'all, like because that's where I always put it.
I mean, if I'm like, in a car, or something.
I just smoke it after work, know what I mean? But that's what happened.
All right.
We're gonna write you a summons.
We'll just give you a summons.
It's for two weeks, you gotta appear in court.
All right? And, uh, for an arraignment.
That's all it's gonna be.
They're gonna ask you what you want to do about an attorney.
Okay? All right, thanks, man.
Appreciate you being honest with me.
Thank you, sir.
You know, I just want to say, first of all, you know, I appreciate you being cooperative with us, all right? Telling us the truth.
A lot people, you know, like to hem and haw, give us the run-around, tell us a bunch of different stories.
Uh, what's gonna happen is, from this point forward, we're gonna go ahead and, uh, take you over to see the magistrate for a bond hearing.
All right, is this your first time ever doing this? Mm-hmm.
All right.
It's my first time in trouble, too.
First time in trouble? - Mm-hmm.
- All right.
Well, I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you.
And it's not just 'cause I'm a cop, it's just from a practical standpoint, all right? There's no winners in the game.
Okay? - It's a game? - Not on the street.
Yeah.
The drug game.
All right? It's a game.
- Mm-hmm.
- All right? It's a game of cat and mouse, and the cat always win.
- Mm-hmm.
- Okay? Don't get started, 'cause you can't win.
I've been dispatched to a, uh, disorder with a weapon.
A guy's got a brick, threatening to beat up his, uh, girlfriend, so I'm gonna go over there and try to diffuse this situation.
Where's he at? He's supposed to be in the woods.
I heard him right here when we pulled up.
His name's Sam.
He's supposed to be a white male, no shirt and some black shorts.
He took off up that hill.
What's the deal? Did he threaten to beat up somebody? Oh, he had a brick wrapped up in his shirt, trying to get me with it.
Okay, what's the deal with you and him? He's my mama's boyfriend.
He just got too drunk.
Okay, so he's intoxicated? Oh, yeah, he's real drunk.
Is he on any drugs or anything? No telling, man.
Okay, other than a brick, has he got any other weapons with him? He had a brick wrapped up in his shirt, and that's what he was trying to beat the door with, and I just told him to leave, and then he just came out here and started screaming and hollering shit, yelling at the top of his lungs.
All right, good deal.
Where'd he go in at? Right there, and I said, as soon as the first one pulled up, he was walking up.
Only charges so far they have on this party is vandalism.
I talked to the reporting party.
He also said he had the brick, swinging it at the guy, so I'm not sure if he's wanting to prosecute for aggravated assault as well.
When he chased him up in the woods, he still had the brick with him.
Trying to assault him with it, according to what I was told.
Go ahead.
I'm gonna put him in custody.
I got a spot out for you.
Don't move, man.
All right? You hear me? Yes, sir.
Do you have anything on you? Do you have any weapons? No, sir.
I got this.
Stuff like this.
No knives or anything? All right, do not move.
Do you understand? Yes, sir.
You got anything illegal on you, man? Anything we need to know about? I don't want my officer to get stuck by anything sharp.
No, sir.
No knives or anything? Yep, stuff.
Look at that.
- There's his brick.
- There's the brick.
It's got blood all over it.
Um what happened up there, boss? What happened up there, man? I'm scared of my wife's fucking kids and nothing happened.
Nothing happened.
Why you running from police then for, man? If nothing happened, why would you even run? You got warrants or something we need to know about? I'm just scared of them.
Scared of them? I've been beat up twice by them.
But you got the brick and everything, man.
Tell me what happened.
I need to know what happened right now, or you're looking guilty.
I've been beat up.
My hand's done been smashed in twice by them.
When? Today? No, sir.
The past couple months.
I'm gonna sit you up on your side and get you into a seated position.
Do you understand? Yes, sir.
Sit up for me, man.
All right.
Bring your knees up right here.
Bring your legs straight out.
Roll to your butt.
So, what happened up there? I'm not really sure.
At what point did you get the brick and start swinging it at people? No, I did not swing no brick.
Okay, well, how do you explain the bloody rocks - that you have in your - All these bloody bricks, man.
Did you wrap it up? Somebody said you had it in a T-shirt, beating on the door, trying to get at people.
Does that ring a bell? My finger was bleeding.
No, my finger was bleeding, and that rock got on my finger.
That rock got on your finger? How'd the rock get on your finger? How did the rocks end up in your pocket? I cut my finger in the woods, and that rock got on my fingers.
I swear to God.
That's that's what happened.
Okay, but how did the rocks get in your pocket? Dude, I took those out of your pocket.
Well, I don't really know, because I mean, those things are covered in blood.
Man, I swear to God, that's what I was doing.
I was out here.
All right, what happened between and the son up there? Every time me and her Every time I drink the beer, you know, and argument starts with her.
Then he wants to fucking fight with me.
All right, Samuel, hang tight for me, man.
I got an ambulance coming to check you out, okay? You want to talk to her? All right, I'll see if we can We'll see if we can't get her to talk to you.
Hold on one second, man.
What happened with him? He's trying to say that you tried to beat him up, and I tried to beat him up? Look at me.
I know, I know, That's why I want the true story.
Normally, he's the best person on this earth.
He's really, he's a great person, and he wouldn't hurt anybody or anything, but he's drunk, and for some reason he's just outrageous.
I mean, he's just outrageous, and he's in there.
I don't know what his problem is.
He just started going off.
What happened with the bricks? He had a bunch of bricks with blood in his pockets.
From his hands, probably.
What happened? He had one in his shirt, and he's in there hitting the wall with it, hit the door.
He was actually inside? Yeah.
He's staying here with me, or he was.
What about the assault or anything? You worried about that? I ain't worried about the assault.
Okay.
We just want him to go, I mean, you know? We're not trying to get anybody to go to jail, we just want him to go, 'cause we know he's drunk.
You know? How long y'all been together, Lisa? Uh, a little over a year.
- Okay.
Y'all married? - No.
- Y'all in love? - No.
He says you tried to beat him up all the time.
He said that he's scared to death of you.
That's what he told me.
He was laying down, crying.
Are you serious? He was crying, saying saying "I'm scared of that woman.
I love her and she beats me up every day, and I'm scared to death of her.
" I'm dead serious.
That's why I wanted to come talk to you and find out the true - story, 'cause - He don't make no sense when he's drunk.
Obviously, obviously.
- Like I said, you know - When he's drunk, he's violent.
Like, a month ago, I walked in on him on top of her, smacking her around, and I had to, you know I didn't let it go.
All right, Samuel, man, uh I just went up there and talked to Lisa and Charles and Eric.
Lisa said she didn't even lay a finger on you.
No, it starts off with me and her, then she-she gets her son, and her son gets on me.
That-that's the problem, her son, not her.
The son said that he caught you beating her the other day, and he had to jump in.
No, I ain't ever beat her.
I ain't never beat her.
All right, man, well, unfortunately today, after you ran from us, you drunk out here running around, beating on people's doors with rocks and stuff, you got to go to the county with me, man.
There's just no two ways around it, all right? - So, at this time - Ain't now way you can get her down here to talk to her? No, I've already talked her.
Best thing for you to do is go down to the jail and just sleep this off.
There ain't nothing more I can do with you, all right? I've got him at gunpoint.
At gunpoint, 132 and Bush.
Cover is Code Three.
