MAN: Bad boys Whatcha want, whatcha want? Whatcha gonna do When Sheriff John Brown come for you? Bad boys, bad boys Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? Bad boys, bad boys Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you? ANNOUNCER: Cops is filmed on location with the men and women of law enforcement.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
OFFICER TODD TEMPLETON: Yeah, one of the most enjoyable things about this job is talking to the people out here.
You know, I get out a lot of times and talk to them out on the street.
Especially the criminals that we run into.
Talking to them and getting to know, you know, why they did what they did and just learning more about their lifestyle and what they have to go through.
Yeah, 331, we're over this way.
OFFICER NICK CARDONA: Right now, we're heading to the east side of the city.
Uh, our helicopter is following a vehicle that's possibly stolen.
Uh, it's been crossing state lines, running from Kansas, running from us.
It's ran a few times, ran yesterday.
And we're in the area, so we're gonna try and catch up to them right now.
The helicopters followed this car to one of our casinos up here.
It's a "one way in, one way out" kind of deal.
Um, the helicopter saw him pull in, we're pulling up, getting close.
Uh, hoping the party's gonna bail.
But we're kind of waiting, heads up from the helicopters.
Be advised, he's dragging something behind him and swinging around.
He's running cars off the road.
It doesn't come back stolen, but it comes back with no record.
He's going eastbound on Probably doing about Every time he turns, there's all kinds of stuff falling out of the back of his truck.
CARDONA: There he is right there.
TEMPLETON: He's coming right in front of you.
Car just passed us on Front Street doing about probably 75, He's still running through red lights.
There's no police cars behind him.
He's gonna run somebody off the road here pretty quick.
Go ahead and initiate a pursuit.
(siren wailing) CARDONA: Uh, we've now been allowed to initiate a pursuit of this vehicle that we've kind of been hanging out and following for the last 20, 30 minutes.
It's gonna be a blue Dodge pickup that's right in front of us right now.
There's quite a few cars in the area.
Don't cut us off, guys! CARDONA: Cut us off.
We're trying to pursue and throw the sticks out.
We're getting cars on.
CARDONA: Right now, we're secondary.
Still northbound on Chouteau.
CARDONA: Watch the brakes, watch the brakes.
Now he's gonna go east on Deramus, but then north on-- Oh, this highway one over here.
Back towards River Front.
It's Chouteau Trafficway, Chouteau Trafficway back towards River Front.
(radio chatter continues) Yeah, he's coming up on River Front Road and he's gonna go westbound on River Front Road.
Going right underneath Chouteau right now.
TEMPLETON: He's gonna bail.
Okay, looks like he's pulling over here.
Oh, he just fully went down this embankment, down into the grass.
CARDONA: Hang on, hang on.
There's no way the cars are gonna be able to follow him down there.
- He is on the grass on the north side CARDONA: - Just hang on.
He might bail back there.
of River Front Road.
It looks like he might be stuck.
He's just on the left side of Chouteau, right where the tree line is.
Go ahead and call out the traffic points.
We need to get the perimeter set up.
If you can see this western, this edge, this road here, that'll be the western part of the perimeter.
TEMPLETON: Guy went down the embankment and bailed into these woods here.
He's not in the vehicle.
We're not gonna go any further.
The last time we saw, he's probably about a quarter-mile to the east, right over there by the Chouteau Bridge.
TEMPLETON: We've got officers basically all throughout these woods.
We're waiting on a dog to come in that can track him better through the woods.
He shouldn't be too hard to find once the dog gets here.
But this is where the truck ended up, and he's in the woods somewhere.
You know which way he might have went? TEMPLETON: No.
We know, 690 said he didn't come back out this way, so CARDONA: Our canine's trying to pick up a scent on the guy.
(man shouting) See your hands! Let me see your hands! (man shouting) (officer shouting) Moose, come here! Come here! Come here.
Come here.
Get your hands up, you understand? - Yes, sir.
- Good boy.
(dog barking) Roll over.
Roll over.
You got anything on you? No, sir.
Roll over and sit up.
(garbled radio transmissions) All right, you're gonna have to stand up.
Scoot up, scoot back.
All right, ready? Turn around.
What you running for? (man sighs) I got warrants.
- Huh? - I have warrants.
(garbled radio transmissions) We're gonna go out that way.
I used to have an old full-size Blazer.
Oh, so you're experienced? We used to come up here.
Oh, you used-- so you know this right here.
When this park was closed down, we used to go up there with a four-wheel.
You used to go four-wheeling up here? So you knew the area.
Oh, God.
TEMPLETON: You didn't go down the easy way.
No, he didn't.
TEMPLETON: Hey, I'll give you, I'll give you an "A" for effort.
You definitely, you definitely gave us a run for your money.
Go this way.
TEMPLETON: Hey, Chris, just while he's doing that, talk to me.
What were you running for again? I got warrants.
TEMPLETON: Warrants? Felony warrants, city warrants, what? Felony warrant out in Kansas.
For what? Uh the charge is attempted theft.
TEMPLETON: Well, I'm pretty sure they've ran you, and you don't have any warrants.
- I don't? TEMPLETON: - No.
- No warrants? TEMPLETON: - No.
All right, so you've got to have a reason to run.
I thought for sure I had a warrant, 'cause I was out on bond.
I'm on bond supervision.
TEMPLETON: Okay, you definitely didn't steal the car? 'Cause nobody runs for just nothing.
No, I thought I had warrants.
TEMPLETON: You got a valid driver's license? Yes, sir.
TEMPLETON: You got a valid driver's license, no warrants.
All right, all the stuff in the back of that truck that's been flying out all over the place, what was that from? Uh, out of a couple Dumpsters in Kansas.
TEMPLETON: - Dumpster diving? - Mm-hmm.
TEMPLETON: Just picking up metals and stuff? Metal, yeah.
TEMPLETON: Just so you know, you're going to jail tonight for felony eluding, all right, among several other traffic charges.
You'll probably be arrested, you know, on investigation for driving a stolen auto, as well.
You realize you could've killed somebody tonight, the way you were driving? Driving like a maniac.
All that for nothing, right? No warrants, no nothing.
Yeah.
TEMPLETON: When's the last time you went to jail for nothing? Don't honestly remember.
TEMPLETON: You haven't been to jail for nothing ever.
Tonight, you're going to jail for nothing, because you made a bad mistake.
Yes, sir.
OFFICER DAVID ROBERTS: I've been working a patrol for about about five years now.
Kind of got brought into it by my dad.
He's worked here since 1988.
You know, my dad was pretty supportive of me trying to carry on the family tradition.
He did, uh, recommend me maybe look into federal agencies, but I knew I kind of wanted to stay in Kansas City and be a police officer here.
Help people in my hometown.
OFFICER IAN HOBBS: One of our other patrol divisions that's on the border of ours just put out a call about a man armed with a gun.
So we're gonna go up here and see if we can't locate him.
Maybe stop him.
Can you hold us out with east zone in the area of 35 and Wabash? ROBERTS: It's a guy with a black shirt with gold around it.
HOBBS: He looks like he's getting ready to cross the street.
ROBERTS: - Crossing - He's on the other side of that female.
(garbled radio transmission) HOBBS: Get on the ground! Down on the ground! Down, down, down, down! ROBERTS: 143.

You know I didn't do nothing, bro.
Come on, cuz, I got I didn't even do nothing, bro.
You just told me to take it to my brother, bro.
HOBBS: You have anything else on you? No, sir.

My probation papers are (bleep).
HOBBS: You can clear it; it's a BB gun shotgun.
I didn't do nothing, bro.
- I'm just trying to tell you, buddy.
OFFICER: - Yep, BB gun.
You just talked to me like it was cool.
And now you throwing me on the ground? (over radio): Call 1929.
HOBBS: They're rolling towards you.
Ah, you act like you was cool.
ROBERTS: Can you see if you can find the calling party so I can write this gentlemen a disorderly conduct ticket? How can you write me a ticket? (over radio): It looks like it's the access road.
You gonna write me a ticket? And you're gonna take my brother's (bleep).
HOBBS: Nope.
You (bleep), man.
(over radio): 1930.
Fuck.
I don't got no warrants or nothing, so y'all wasting y'all time.

(speaks indistinctly) ROBERTS: Uh, I think that's actually him.
But I need her as a witness, bro.
Come here! ROBERTS: Do you mind if I get your name, so I can take him to jail for disorderly conduct? Yeah, Brown.
(over radio): Yeah, he's somewhat belligerent.
Disorderly conduct? (speaks indistinctly) ROBERTS: I'm not asking you to press charges or anything like that.
I'm pressing charges.
All right? Yeah, you pressing charges.
ROBERTS: Can you just explain to me real quick what happened? Well, the girl said something to him.
This old man, this and that.
"What, what?" And he and I didn't pay no attention.
Then he come up on me, and I seen that he had something.
I don't know what he had, I wasn't paying him no attention.
ROBERTS: Was he lifting up his shirt? What was he doing? Yeah, he pulling he he went to pull it.

Pulled it out of my pocket, they got all my things.
HOBBS: No, we put 'em back in your pocket, there.
Just 'cause of my little brother's BB.
HOBBS: All right.
You're not getting the BB gun back.
I don't care.
I'm gonna buy him another one.
- I got money.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: - Okay.
You know I got money.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: Hey! I'm through, I'm sorry.
- I'm sorry.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: - Okay, psst.
I'm sorry.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: Okay? Thank you.

OLSEN-STAWICKI: No reason for all that.

I'm cooperating with you right now.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: No, you're not, you're yelling All right, I'm gonna stop talking to you, then.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: Thank you.

OLSEN-STAWICKI: Exactly.
I'm trying to be nice to you.
You is being nice to me.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: Thank you.
You don't know it, but you're not cussing at me, you didn't throw me on the ground.
OLSEN-STAWICKI: Exactly.
You didn't take a BB gun I was about to give my ten-year-old little brother I haven't seen since I've been in jail.
Come on, why do I got to cooperate with you, and they just harass me? OLSEN-STAWICKI: Okay.
Why are you being rude like that? - Because they write me up on the OLSEN: - I don't want to hear that.
I just got out of jail! OLSEN-STAWICKI: I don't want to hear that, okay? Utilize the bumper, watch your head, have a seat right there for me.

We saw him walking down 35th Street.
We ped-checked him and went to gunpoint.
He started acting like he was gonna run away, I went to gunpoint on him, he proned down immediately, and, uh Soon as we frisked him, we found a BB gun, so He seems to think we're harassing him for some reason.
Apparently the police stopped him earlier today, so OLSEN-STAWICKI: Oh.
Okay.
HOBBS: So he's he seems to have my partner and I mixed up with somebody else.
But He's not terribly happy about going to jail.
I think we arrested him about four days ago, also.
For being in a stolen car.
(banging on van doors) ROBERTS: He's in custody, and we're off to jail.
SERGEANT TOM JENKINS: I think potential tourists should come to Las Vegas.
First of all, we got everybody from all over the world.
We have some of the most beautiful people on the planet showing up here.
We got all of the entertainment, we got gambling, we got clubs, we got pools.
If you can't have fun in Las Vegas, then you probably should just stay home.
(tires squealing, crashing) Oh, wow.
Hey, Serge, there's an accident back there and it looked like there's people down.
Let's get back over there.
All right.
JENKINS: There's people down.
Let me let me out.
Let me go see if I can help some.
(garbled radio transmission) Six-HD.
(over radio): Six-HD.
JENKINS: I got it.
I need an ambulance at Audrey and Flamingo.
Got a 401-B.
(officer speaks indistinctly) (indistinct radio transmission) OFFICER ALBERT REEDER: You okay? She was hit by the car.
REEDER: You drinking or something? I was a while ago.
JENKINS: Did the car flip you over? Listen to me.
Yes.
JENKINS: Did it flip you? Yeah.
JENKINS: Flip you upside down? How did you land? It threw me to the side.
I think I hit the pole.
JENKINS: You think you hit the pole? My head my head hit something.
JENKINS: Tell me where you're at right now.
I'm in Las Vegas.
JENKINS: How old are you? I'm 36.
JENKINS: All right, you okay? How's your legs feeling? My ankle hurts.
My elbow hurts and my head, over here.
JENKINS: And that's it? And my back.
JENKINS: Okay, just hold tight for a minute, and we're gonna get you the ambulance, make sure you're okay, all right? As long as you still talk to me, you're okay.
You know that, right? - Is my ear bleeding or JENKINS: - No.
No, hon, you got your earrings in.
JENKINS: You still look good.
Still looking good.
My head hit something.
JENKINS: And it could have been just the ground when it flipped you upside down.
Yeah, maybe.
JENKINS: Okay? - My back JENKINS: - Don't move, though.
Listen to me, you got to just talk, but don't move.
Don't get scared.
You're all right.
What's your name, sweetie? My name's Jody.
JENKINS: Jody's right here with you the whole way.
Cool? Can't believe it.
JENKINS: Where you guys from? Oregon.
JENKINS: You guys just get here today? No, we've been here since Thursday.
I thought he was speeding.
REEDER: Who was speeding? That guy.
I swear.
REEDER: What happened? I missed what happened.
I was turning left.
It was green.
I thought I had an-an open chance to turn.
REEDER: Let me see Give me all your information.
- The car pushed you and JENKINS: - Where were you guys? - You guys was walking - We were gonna walk across the street JENKINS: Yeah? and we saw the car coming up, and so we ran.
JENKINS: Right.
And then it hit her, and I kind of ducked over here by the tree.
JENKINS: All right.
We still good.
Hey, where's the other car that was involved? We got both of them? He's around the corner.
JENKINS: I want to know which way he was going.
Hey, which way you were going? I was turning from the left turn lane into Bally's parking lot.
JENKINS: Did you have the light or no? It was green, green, green.
JENKINS: For you? It was green for all I mean Was it an arrow or a green light? It was a green light.
JENKINS: No arrow, though? It wasn't an arrow.
JENKINS: And then the other car hit you coming this way? He was coming this way.
JENKINS: As you were turning in, it just went through you and then spinned you around over here? Well, I didn't spin-spin halfway.
JENKINS: Do you remember if the back of your car hit the lady or did you see her get hit? I didn't see the lady get hit, but I saw a crowd of people over there, and that's all I saw.
REEDER: All right, what's your story about what happened? Dude turned on that red light.
REEDER: Who? That car turned on that red light.
My light was green for a while.
I just came from the Palms getting my car washed.
REEDER: So, the person in the other car turned on a red light and hit you? Yes.
(sirens wailing) He's gonna get all your information.
JENKINS: There's nothing to be afraid of.
You're okay, but you're looking good, though.
I got to tell you that.
All right? That's all that matters is you still look good.
Right? Yes, you look great.
(laughter) That's crazy, dude.
JENKINS: You don't have a strand of hair out of place right now, just so you know.
There you go.
Here's the firemen, okay? Thank you so much.
JENKINS: Tell them what they need to know.
(groans) This is yours, though.
Okay.
JENKINS: There's, you know, a bag, there's two, three beers on the floor, and, uh, I don't drink, but I don't think you can buy beer with a lime in it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but, you know, you don't have to be a detective to know Here's a closed beer, and there's no lime in it, which tends to make me believe that he was probably drinking and driving.
REEDER: Follow my finger.
Don't move your head, just follow with your eyes only.
- You understand? - Yes.
JENKINS: The good thing about it is nobody's dead at this point.
This could have been a whole lot worse on a busy weekend up here on the Strip.
That lady could have been killed, and he'd really be in a whole lot of trouble.
All right.
As soon as you guys get done and they release her, just give me a call.
- The number's on there.
- Okay.
JENKINS: And then we'll get you guys a ride back to the hospital, okay? Thank you.
JENKINS: Be safe, ma'am.
Tell her she'll be okay.
She's just a little bruised up a little bit, you know what I mean? - I think so.
- All right.
Hey, what was it? Was he good? OFFICER STEPHEN BAKER: Yeah, he was good.
JENKINS: Really? What was it? BAKER: He was only like, .
02.
JENKINS: .
02, huh? BAKER: Yeah, .
02.
JENKINS: All right.
I thought he was done for sure.
BAKER: Oh, I thought he was, too.
He had the bloodshot, you know, watery eyes, just You know, there might be more there, just not that's gonna come up on a PBT.
JENKINS: Hey, did he tell you what's going on now? You blew underneath the limit, so you're not gonna go to jail, okay? But that still doesn't take the fact away that, hey, in the car, there's beer everywhere.
I don't know if you bought beer.
Were you drinking beer on your way over here? The only good thing about it is you had an accident, you're not DUI, and the lady that was hurt is-is fine.
She's not she's not fatal.
She could have just as well been underneath that car.
I mean, what lesson did you learn, bro? It-It's not worth it, right? It's not worth it.
If you go to a casino and you drink, you stay there.
You get a cab.
You go buy beer at the house, you take it back home, you drink it there, because even when you're doing everything right, and something simple like this turns into something deadly, which it could have been, where do you think you would be? All right? Not only, you know, do you get to walk away right now and you don't go to jail, but your car's tore up and there's a lady in the hospital because you made a mistake on a turn because your judgment was bad.
This guy lucked out.
We're gonna tow his car, 'cause he can't drive.
He's gonna get a bunch of cites for the open container, causing an accident, and I hope it opened his eyes that drinking and driving eventually catches up with you, and it's gonna cost you one day.
OFFICER (over radio): I've got him at gunpoint.
DISPATCHER: At gunpoint, Cover is Code Three.
