loneliness is a killer.

TERRIFIED WHIMPERING
Someone else was there.
- Hi, I'm Harriet.
- JACK: Hi.
Please call me Professor.
MRS BAXTER: He's still there.
What if he does something?
What if you're not here?
- We live here, not Gloria.
- No, Gloria lives here.
BENJAMIN: These are her things.
How did they get here?
What are you interviewing for?
Crime analyst.
I thought you needed support.
Mr Dawson?
- Yes.
- I'm here for our appointment.
Useless git. He wouldn't sign it.
Is he going to cause us any trouble?
He's a confused old man.
JACK: Her name is Edith Bausch.
Welcome to Cherry Hill. I'm Blessing.
Why would they be out here,
at their age
..in clothes like this?

CLOCK TICKING QUIETLY
Do we think they were a couple?
No wedding rings.
Doesn't necessarily mean anything.
A ring for their
generation's important.
Don't you think?
And for me.
It means a lot to me.
You know, at the beginning,
when I'd just started,
I would dread the end of the day.
I couldn't close my eyes.
Images of what I'd seen
came flooding back.
Couldn't sleep.
Haunted by them.
I guess I didn't feel safe.
Something about today
just won't go away.
How long do you think they'd been dead?
Three weeks? Their bodies
are in active decay.
No-one missed them.
No missing person's report.
I was thinking, how many
people would miss me
if one day I wasn't there?
- I would miss you.
- Hmm.
JACK CHUCKLES
Thanks.
Hmm.
But let's say
..we went for a walk together,
a walk in the woods,
and got lost
- Do you think they got lost?
- Don't you?
Hmm.
- Lost by design maybe.
- Huh?
- Senicide.
- What's that?
Altruistic self-sacrifice.
An old tradition.
Examples of it
in lots of different cultures.
You sacrifice yourself
to stop being a burden
to your community.
When the island of Keos
in the Aegean Sea
was besieged by Athens,
the people of Keos voted
that all people over 60
should kill themselves
by drinking hemlock
to preserve the food supply.
- You're serious?
- They did this willingly.
And then there are
the old apocryphal stories
of old Native Americans
who wander off into
the wilderness to die.
Mm-hm.
Or the Inuit
..who put their old on ice floes
and let them drift away into oblivion.
Hmm.
You can close your eyes now.
Or perhaps they simply got lost.
BIRDSONG
WATER RUNS NEARBY
Gary!
He's still there.
What's he doing?
Just sitting there doing nothing.
He's an old man.
That's what old men do.
No good use to anyone.
- Call the police.
- I'm not calling the police.
- Please!
- I've called the police.
They say he's not bothering anyone.
He's bothering me.
Oh
So, Edith Bausch has been
dead for three months?
- At least.
- You're certain?
Absolutely certain.
That doesn't make any sense, does it?
I mean, nothing really makes
much sense,
but this definitely
doesn't make any sense.
Her obituary was posted
online three months ago.
Why wasn't the death registered?
The care home was
told she died elsewhere.
Yeah, by a grandson that may not exist.
The care home believe
she died in a hospital,
therefore she's their responsibility.
If the death isn't registered,
her pension and any other
benefits are still paid.
So they killed her for the benefits?
There's no obvious sign
of third-party involvement
before her death.
- What about the acid?
- She was already dead.
Someone walked her into the cave.
And left her there.
Who?
Her grandson?
VEHICLE APPROACHES
POLICE OFFICER: Mr Dawson?
Mr Dawson, did you hear me?
Why are you sitting out here?
I'm waiting for my friend
Gloria to come home.
OFFICER SIGHS
Mr Dawson
..your friend doesn't live here.
Since when?
Since now.
Mr Dawson, when was
the last time you saw Gloria?
Two
..weeks. Three.
Three. Yeah. Three weeks. I think.
Yes. Three.
What did she say to you?
What did she say?
To me?
I love you.
The last thing.
Love you.
She doesn't live there any more.
Gary and Lauren Baxter live there.
Mr Dawson, you're scaring them.
- I'm scaring them?
- I know you don't mean to.
She wouldn't leave
without saying goodbye.
She wouldn't do that to me.
Go home, Mr Dawson.
Go home.
Unidentified male.
White. 70 to 90 years old.
Damage to the face and body
appears to have been a result
of animal activity.
DI FLYNN: An animal bit his face?
Most likely bird and rodent, yes.
Postmortem.
And you can tell that, can you?
Yep. You can tell.
You look to see if the body
has responded to the injury.
And if there's no healing response,
then you can conclude that
death had already occurred.
At first sight, I thought that
the teeth marks on the foot
were likely to be a fox's.
But I think, based on the damage,
it is more likely
to be a larger animal.
Part of the right shin and foot
were found separate
to the rest of the body.
I think, from the teeth marks,
it could be a wild boar.
They actually do have wild
boar in that particular forest.
I hope I've retrieved enough material
to allow for an analysis of
saliva for serological testing
and cellular content.
A specific genetic
profile from the saliva
could help identify the unknown animal.
Have you examined the second body?
Not yet.
Is there any evidence of
animal interference on that body?
Not that I noticed
at the scene of the crime.
Why not?
I don't know.
Have we got any further
with identification?
DNA and fingerprints
aren't on the database.
Yeah, there's no matches
on an image search either.
Any reports of a missing couple?
Not that we're aware of, no.
Maybe they didn't want to be found.
Perhaps they were a couple
who wanted to go everywhere together.
Do we know how he died?
I believe he died of hypothermia.
Your body shuts down,
you lose consciousness.
Go to sleep, never wake up.
By accident, or did he just,
you know, sort of let himself die?
He might not have known
what he was doing.
He had Lyme disease.
Tested positive via Western blot.
Nine out of ten bands.
Lyme disease has been
linked to dementia.
Not proven.
Well, there is a school of thought
that there's a causal relationship.
The Oxford study says there's no link.
And some doctors don't view
the Oxford study as definitive.
Lyme disease
is a multi-system disorder.
It can affect many
of the system's organs -
the skin, joints, heart.
It's a demyelinating disorder
that has been associated with
neurodegenerative
brain disease and dementia.
John Doe's amygdala and spinal cord
were PCR-positive
for B burgdorferi DNA,
and an intact B burgdorferi
spirochete was found in tissue
of the spinal cord.
Borrelia burgdorferi
is a pathogenic spirochete
responsible for Lyme disease.
Well, you're signing the postmortem.
Thank you.
I've also sent blood
for genetic testing.
I believe, based on the lesions,
that neurodegeneration,
dementia, is involved,
irrespective of the cause.
Right. So, good. So, he
..became disoriented, got lost
and he fell asleep and then he died?
I might think that
..if there wasn't another body.
I don't know what to think.
This one was also on my shortlist.
Uh-huh.
Hmm.
Nah. I don't think so.
I'm not feeling it.
- Not feeling it?
- No.
Well, take a look at this one.
Ex-police officer. Good training.
Read her cover letter. Very keen.
She was on top of my shortlist.
Hmm.
I don't think so.
Too keen.
Too keen.
Oh, no. No, definitely not
my favourite.
Not sure she's up to it,
and I don't think
she'd get on with you.
Hmm. Looks interesting.
I think I should see her.
Suit yourself.
Unfortunately, there is no
match on the DNA database.
What, then?
Not surprising, is it?
Not that big a database,
relatively speaking,
and his age makes it even less likely.
Why less likely?
The National DNA Database
was started in 1995.
If he's 80 now,
he would have been 50 then.
Only 5% of arrests occur
among men over 50.
Of course, I'm sure you know that.
- Course.
- I'd look at his health.
Narrow the field.
Does he have any
long-term health conditions?
He has Lyme disease.
Lyme disease.
Good.
Why good?
Relatively rare.
There's only 1,500 to 2,000 cases
of Lyme disease a year.
His age, combined
with the Lyme disease,
creates a great limiting factor.
There are not going to be many
80-year-olds with Lyme disease.
I'd get the list from the NHS
and start calling.
Could be hundreds.
We'd start in an area
near where we found the body
and then work outwards.
Radius of five miles,
radius of ten miles,
20 miles, so on.
SHE LAUGHS
We'd find him.
Cool.
Um
JACK CLEARS HIS THROA
Another hypothetical
Two bodies found together.
Urban? Rural?
- Rural.
- Outdoors?
Yeah. One has been
disturbed by animals,
partially eaten. The other hasn't.
Can you explain it?
Contamination.
Either the eaten body had
a foreign substance on it
that made it attractive to the animals,
or the uneaten body
had a substance on it
that made it unappetising.
What made you want to do forensics?
I went to a lecture
given by Clarissa Mullery,
and I listened to her and
I thought, "I want to do that."
Actually, it was more
than that. I said to myself,
"I can do that."
She was a bit of a hero.

to get the support you need.
I don't need support! I'm fine.
Gloria Mead is my friend.
I-I haven't heard from her.
I think she's missing.
How do I report her missing?
I'll look into it. Maybe they've moved.
If I can find out where they've
moved to, I'll let you know.
Is that all right?
Mr Dawson?
Yes, yes. It's fine.
Go.
Those useless set of functions!
We need to get
adult social services involved.
Where is my goddamn cup of tea?!
The deceased is a white female,
60 to 80 years old.
SNIFFS AND SIGHS
Nitrazepam.
I'm going to need more than that.
Jane Doe - woman in the woods.
She shows a significant
amount of nitrazepam
in her system.
Nitrazepam is
a benzodiazepine.
It's contraindicated
for elderly patients.
You keep the patient
conscious but compliant,
but it can cause cognitive impairment
and delirium,
and an overdose can cause
respiratory failure and death.
Benzodiazepines are metabolised slowly.
She died with them in her system.
She took her own life?
She died of asphyxiation.
I think there was
third-party involvement.
Why?
The swabs from the nape of her neck,
underneath her chin,
palms of her hands and face
all showed they'd been exposed to
a 3% to 6% sodium hypochlorite,
and small amounts of sodium
hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide
and calcium hypochlorite.
- Bleach.
- Yeah.
Trying to destroy evidence?

- Yes.
Are you sure I can't be you?
Where do you want me?
Well, let's move on, then, get started.
Identification
of the couple in the woods?
That'd be great.
- The bloke had Lyme disease?
- Yes.
I'm on it.
DI FLYNN: Apparently,
you hold a bank account in her name
and you receive her pension benefit.
Yes, I can see that's correct.
There's been a withdrawal recently.
Has there been any other
activity in that account, then?

Why are you in my house?
WORKMAN: There are no houses left,
you greedy bastard.
Who are you?
MAN: You stole my wife.
You had gone.
I was still alive!
You aren't a person any more, Charles.
You weren't a person any more.

How long does it last?
We'll have to top him up.

I'll just check the sort code.
It's an online bank.
Who's named on the account?
I don't have that information.
Who's named on the account you hold?
- Signatories?

Edith Bausch, of course.

we haven't been able to eliminate.
Charles Mead. Lives with Gloria Mead.
Still on the electoral roll,
but his phone's been disconnected.

- About a week, I guess.

Is this about the crazy old man?
Crazy old man?
Yeah. Stalking us. I reported

Not at all.
Upholstery's a bit damp.

Well, he certainly left
a lot of his private belongings

Yeah. I don't know what
I'm supposed to do about that.
Pack 'em up, I guess.
How can we find Mr Dawson?
Dunno. Wish I could help.
Who's hired you?
I work for myself.
I'm helping a mate of mine.
He's got a property company.
I don't know, I think
they got hired by the council.
I can get him to call you
if you like. His name's Bobby.
That'd be helpful. Thank you.
No worries.
Thanks.
What did you say your name was, mate?
Matthew Harris.
Matthew Harris. Thanks.
I put in a call to adult

They must have sorted it.
That quick? Write them a good review.
