The Amazing Race (2001) s37e03 Episode Script

Chaotic, Crazy, That's What We're Used To

1
PHIL KEOGHAN: Previously
onThe Amazing Race
12 teams raced to Osaka, Japan.
[both shout]
Oh, my God.
KEOGHAN:
At the airport, Pops and Jeff
and Melinda and Erika
join forces.
We'll be able to get on it?
Jeff and I worked some magic.
KEOGHAN:
In Osaka, the return
of the Intersection forced teams
to pair up at the Roadblock.
-They've already paired up?
-I think so.
KEOGHAN:
Jonathan and Jack were
in perfect sync.
-[grunts]
-Yay!
KEOGHAN:
Last place
Scott and Bernie staged
a spectacular comeback.
-Yeah!
-Yeah!
Thank you!
Arigato. Arigato. Arigato.
KEOGHAN:
Meanwhile, Ernest and Mark
couldn't find their rhythm.
MARK:
I'm just overwhelmed
by this situation.
KEOGHAN:
Married couple Jonathan
and Ana won the leg.
-You are team number one.
-[laughs]
We had the most amazing day
today.
KEOGHAN:
Siblings Han and Holden
got tangled up at the Detour.
-Go back.
-I'm so sorry, Holden.
I'm so sorry.
KEOGHAN:
But in the end,
father and daughter
Ernest and Bridget
came up short.
You are the last team to arrive,
and you have been eliminated.
We had an amazing time.
KEOGHAN:
Coming up tonight,
the Express Pass returns
I want this Express Pass so bad.
a new surprise is revealed
It's called the Driver's Seat.
and emotions run high
at the Detour.
Oh, look, you're not even
doing it anymore.
-No, no, no!
-Okay, go.
ANA:
All right.
Leg three.
JONATHAN:
Route Info.
"Travel by bullet train
-to the city of Kyoto."
-Oh, my gosh.
"Once there, take a taxi
to Shimogamo Jinja Shrine
to find your next clue."
KEOGHAN: All teams will
now ride the bullet train
from Japan's third
largest city, Osaka, to Kyoto,
the former capital of Japan
for more than 1,000 years.
After racing at speeds up to 200
miles an hour on the bullet,
teams have a chance
to continue speeding
through this leg of the race
when they encounter
an Express Pass.
Ooh! Express Pass coming.
-Let's go.
-JONATHAN: Let's go.
I definitely feel like we're
one of the stronger teams here.
And now that we bagged
a first-place win,
I feel like
we're kind of more relaxed now.
We need a cab. Need a cab.
We're just gonna try
to stay on our toes
and be agile
and be ready for anything.
Yeah. And bounce back on. Yes.
We need to go
to Shin-Osaka station.
-MAN: Shin-Osaka Station?
-Yes. Yes.
-ANA: Thank you.
-JONATHAN: He knows. He knows.
Because I am very sensitive
to the heat
and we know a hot country
is gonna be
coming up at some point
-Yeah.
-we want to have that
Express Pass in our pockets.
"Heads up.
The Express Pass will be
up for grabs
somewhere along this leg."
-Oh, my gosh. Let's go.
-Let's go.
SCOTT:
So we're leaving
in second place today.
We're super excited about that.
Two out of 11 is a much better
position than we were in
during the last leg.
LORI:
Ooh, my calf already hurts,
honey.
I'm definitely not a runner,
so I made up
this word "slogging."
It's slow jogging.
-I'm just gonna be slower.
My calf.
-Yeah.
I'm 47. She's 48, you know.
-And-- 49. Oh, my gosh.
-I'm 49. [laughs]
-Come on, honey. We got to go.
-Yup.
LORI:
We're slower,
so every little minute counts
for us.
-Konnichiwa.
-Shin-Osaka Station.
My brother loved Kyoto.
I'm just so excited to go there
and be able to tell my brother,
"Hey, I went there, too,
and had ten sake, also."
No, I'm just kidding. We can't
have sake, but I wish. I wish.
CARSON: I can't believe
we're taking this Shinkansen.
-JACK: Yes. I'm so excited.
-CARSON: I'm going to Kyoto.
JACK: That was one
of my bucket list things.
JACK:
Let's go. So, if we could
get an Express Pass,
like, that
would change everything.
Because with a target
on our back, we can
Play it on a Detour
if we need to.
-All right, let's go.
-Let's go.
Okay. You good?
You don't have to run yet.
Okay, don't run yet, then.
Shin-Osaka Station.
COURTNEY:
As nurses, I think
our ability to be adaptable
will carry over in this race.
JASMIN:
We're not
the fastest team here, but
we're not allowing that
to intimidate us.
Courtney was
in the intensive care unit.
I was
in the emergency department.
We learned how to
stay calm under pressure.
The Express Pass is out there.
That's like a golden
That's like getting the
golden ticket on Willy Wonka.
Yeah.
I've been on a bullet train
a long time ago.
I just remember that
it's one of the fastest forms
of ground transportation
in the world.
-I'm looking forward
to riding on that train.
-Yeah.
BERNIE:
Bullet train.
It's kind of like a train.
-It is a train.
-It's a train.
[both laughing]
It literally says,
"Bullet train."
-True.
-[laughs]
JONATHAN:
This is it. Shin-Osaka.
-MAN: Okay.
-JONATHAN: Goodbye to Osaka.
-Kyoto, here we come.
-Oh. Here are ticket lines.
-CLERK: Your ticket.
-Beautiful.
-Yeah, let's go, let's go.
-Let's go. Okay, come on.
SCOTT:
Thank you. Thank you. Arigato.
Thank you. Arigato.
Bullet train to Kyoto.
-Over here, over here.
-ANA: Come on, get on.
Hopefully, we have a good lead.
SCOTT:
Get on, get on, get on!
We literally had one minute
-to catch that bullet.
-LORI: We ran up the stairs
with one minute to catch
this train, and here we are.
JONATHAN: This thing is just
absolutely flying.
-I mean, this is crazy.
-ANA: How fast do you think?
I have never gone
on a train this fast, ever.
-This is so smooth.
-This is awesome.
It is so smooth.
SCOTT:
I love this. I've never been
on a bullet train before.
It's chaotic, crazy.
That's what we're used to.
That's what we do.

-JOSIAH: Track 25 right here.
-CARSON: Yay!
-Seems like maybe we're here
alone, so that's good.
-Yeah.
-JOSIAH: Yeah.
-JACK: Hey, good job, guys.
-This train is flying.
-Fast.
JOSIAH:
We're so excited.
JONATHAN:
Oh, my God.
What if it's the Express Pass?
-Going for it.
-[train bell dings]
-All right, here we go.
-All right, look for the taxi.
Down, down, down, down, down.
LORI:
Let's go fast. Let's go fast.
JONATHAN:
Come on, babe. Taxi. Taxi. Taxi.
SCOTT:
Babe, this way, babe. This way.
-ANA: Here.
-JONATHAN:
This guy, he's dropping off.
-Get him, get him.
Get him right now.
-LORI: Excuse me.
-Taxi!
-Yes. Please. Thank you.
JONATHAN:
Look. They're right there
in front of us.
-Oh, yeah. Oh, interesting.
-I don't know what that means.
ANA:
Oh, my gosh.
Look at these buildings
to the left.
How beautiful.
-So cool.
-Yeah, this is the old world.
I mean, there's nothing that
compares to this in America.
And they're untouched.
We're a baby country
compared to this.
-Thank you so much.
Thank you. Thank you.
-CARSON: Thank you.
-Okay, we got everything, Car?
-Here we go. Yeah.
-JACK: All right, let's go.
-CARSON: Let's do it.
JACK:
See you guys there.
JASMIN:
All right.
-COURTNEY: Okay.
-JASMIN: Let's go.
-COURTNEY: Okay.
-You want to go in right here?
COURTNEY:
Yeah.
JASMIN:
Where do we buy tickets?
-There it is.
Ticket counter right here.
-All right.
-I'm just trying to see
what these signs say.
-Okay.
Let's get in
and just find out, Jeff.
I tell you what.
You guys in a hurry?
You in a rush?
JEFF:
We got a million dollars
on the line, man.
-No, no, no. I'm talking,
you here, us there.
-That was a good idea.
All right, come on. Let's go.
-Thank you, sir.
-JEFF: All right. All right.
-Thank you, sir.
-Pops, you are the man for that.
-You, too, ma'am.
I appreciate it.
-JEFF: Thank you so much.
-Kyoto?
-So we got a little advantage
by them allowing us
to come up front.
-Yup. Man, that was
a player move right there, Pops.
-Thank you.
-We leave in six minutes.
Come on.
-Six minutes.
-POPS: I think the train
is coming now.
-JEFF: Yeah.
-Beautiful Racemorning.
-And here's the train
right here.
-Ma'am, so go
to the ticket center. Okay.
-Okay.
-So we were in the right line.
Ooh, man.
-Okay.
All right. Let's go, Mom.
So these are the tickets
we want.
There's yellow,
so we're right there.
That's where we have to go.
Yup. That's okay-- Mom.
Time to get on the bullet train.
Nice job, Mom. Nice job.
Here we go. See you in Kyoto.
We're taking a bullet train
to Kyoto!
Yeah.
Let's get this bullet train.
Oh, it's in two minutes.
-NICK: Two minutes.
-MIKE: Let's do it. Let's do it.
How cool is this?
-Right?
-MARK: First bullet train.
Oh, we just made it, boy.
We just made it.
Oh, let's go.
Wow. Okay. We're here.
Scott, I think we go this way,
-where all the people are going.
-All right.
-No clue box here?
-You see it? You see it?
-LORI:
Clue, clue, clue box, clue box.
-I see it. I see it.
JONATHAN:
There's another team.
They beat us.
-Shut up.
-It's all good. They beat us.
Route Info. "Buy a sheet
of magic fortune paper."
KEOGHAN:
For a glimpse
of their future luck,
visitors
to this sixth century shrine
use pieces
of fortune-telling paper,
known as omikuji.
Teams have to purchase a piece
of this paper
from a marked vendor
and dip it into the water
to reveal the location
of their next clue.
Magic paper vendor?
Scott, come on, please. Come on.
This way, this way, this way.
Scott, come on.
JONATHAN:
That's him. That's him.
Go, go, go. 500?
-Magic paper, please.
-Okay.
LORI:
The paper was
this small little paper
with beautiful writing,
but you couldn't
see the main message
until you put it in the water.
You just take it, and the
SCOTT: And then watch
the message appear.
-That was magical.
-Magical.
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
-"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
-Shiramine.
LORI:
Should we ask somebody?
Faster. Run. We're in a race.
Taxi!
JONATHAN:
Oh, there's one
across the street.
-CARSON: Oh, my God. Hey.
-Oh, my God!
-CARSON: What's up, you guys?
-JONATHAN: Let's cross.
-Are you leaving?
-ANA: So glad to see you guys.
-JONATHAN: Wait. Wait.
No. You can't cross.
-JACK: Okay.
CARSON:
Yeah.
-Thank you, Kan,
see you in a minute.
-Arigato gozaimasu.
We'll see you very soon.
-ANA: Shiramine Jingu Shrine?
-JONATHAN: Thank you.
Either side, honey. Either side.
-I'm looking.
-Dang it.
-Oh, my God.
-Okay. Where would that be?
Um, the marked vendor.
Thank you. Arigato.
Okay, we can't run.
-CARSON: A person
with magic paper, yes.
-JACK: Oh, Carson, yes.
CARSON:
Red and yellow flowers. Yeah.
-MAN: Okay. Thank you.
-Arigato gozaimasu.
CARSON:
Um, "Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
JACK:
All right, ready?
We're really not far behind them
at all.
BOTH:
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine"?
-MAN: Yeah.
-JACK: Ten minutes. Perfect.
-Perfect.
We need to go
to Shiramine Jingu Shrine.
-Do you know where it is?
-DRIVER: Yes.
SCOTT:
Yes? Okay.
ALYSSA:
It says "Shiramine"
JOSIAH:
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
ALYSSA: We want to get out of
here before we see anyone else.
All right, let's go that way
to get a taxi
to get
to the bullet train station.
HAN: We are leaving
in last place today.
I think what's exciting is,
this is the season of surprises.
There's going to be
an opportunity to catch up
on every single leg.
There's a taxi stand
in the hotel.
Go to the hotel.
Go to the hotel. Smart.
HOLDEN:
We can't expect things
to go well for us.
We have to force them
to go well for us.
HAN:
Good job, Holden.
Exit right there. Yeah? Thanks.
There we go, taxi right here,
Jeff, come on.
-Right here. Right here.
-Taxi. Taxi.
Let's go. let's go.
You're killing it today, Pops.
ANA:
Jingu Shrine?
Oh, this is it?
JONATHAN:
Go, go, go.
-ANA: Come on.
-JONATHAN: Get ready, babe.
We're gonna have
to blast through.
-Roadblock.
-Okay.
-Okay.
-Express Pass.
The Japanese go to great lengths
to keep
their treasured culture alive,
keeping sports like kemari,
an ancient form of samurai
soccer, in the spotlight.
Popular with royalty
and nobility,
it was first played
nearly 1,400 years ago.
The goal is simple.
Keep the ball in the air,
just like soccer,
without using hands.
This Roadblock requires teams
to complete five passes
to get their next clue.
The Express Pass
is up for grabs.
The team that wins it
can hand it over
and skip any task that
they don't want to complete.
To win this one,
both team members need
to complete the Roadblock.
Can they win
this game-changing advantage
from the kemari master?
[shouts]
We're both doing it.
It's for the Express Pass.
-JACK: Oh, my God.
-It's another team.
-ANA: Come on, babe.
Let's go, let's go,
let's go, let's go.
Who's here?
-ANA: Is it D&D?
-JONATHAN: Come on.
-[exclaims]
-ANA: Holy moly.
I am not good at sports.
ANA AND JONATHAN:
"Play the ancient game"
ANA:
"of kemari."
"Five successful passes."
-CARSON: Okay, ready?
-JACK: Yeah. Go, go, go.
-JONATHAN: I'm gonna go first.
-CARSON: Hey, you guys.
Hi, guys. Can I play?
-"Only one Express Pass
is available to win."
-Okay.
-What do you think?
-Well, let's just do one, yeah.
Well, let's just do it. Yeah?
JACK: I definitely thought
that Jonathan and Ana would be
in and out with the Express Pass
before we even got there.
-[Jonathan grunts]
-Shoot. Okay.
CARSON:
I'm ready to play.
JACK:
So we are in this.
We have a fighting chance
to win this Express Pass.
-Ooh.
-You got it, Car!
ANA:
One.
-Two.
-JONATHAN: Ah. Sorry.
ANA:
It's okay. It's okay.
Ooh. Sorry.
-Too hard, too hard.
-JONATHAN: Babe, get ready.
-ANA: Whoo!
-[Jonathan grunts]
-JACK: Whoa!
-ANA: Oh!
Good? Good?
-Yeah, that was five passes.
-Whoa. Okay.
-Oh, my gosh. It's my turn.
-Go. Fast, babe, fast.
JACK:
Yeah, Car!
-Let's go! [laughs]
-Oh!
CARSON:
The ball has a mind of its own.
JACK:
You got it. You got it.
Oh, shoot.
JONATHAN:
I had gotten done
with the Roadblock
so quickly
that it seemed like a no-brainer
for her to go ahead
and step in and try it herself.
It's okay, babe. It's okay.
Just to see if we can get
the Express Pass. Um
I was not optimistic.
ANA:
Oh, my gosh
CARSON: I played soccer
when I was younger,
and my mom used
to tell an iconic story about
how I liked to pick the flowers
instead of actually playing.
JACK:
You got it, Car.
Oh. [grunts] Ooh.
Almost.
ERIKA:
I think it's this way, Mom.
Excuse me.
We got to go this way.
ERIKA:
Slow and steady, Mom.
You're fine.
All right. Taxi.
We're in a race. We need to get
to the temple fast.
Let's go.
JACK:
You got it, Car.
I have
to make five successful passes.
Oh.
I had no technique.
Oof.
I had no idea what I was doing.
JONATHAN:
You got to chill.
ANA:
I was kicking the ball too hard.
Yes, Carson.
ANA:
Jonathan is so competitive,
and if I'm not good
at something,
he'll just shut down.
JONATHAN:
I'm not going to be smiling,
you know,
when you're having
a hard time with something
that I find so simple.
ANA:
I just ignored
whatever energy
he was putting out,
and I just focused
on what I needed to get done.
That is a perfect example
of just our relationship
in general.
We know by now
the way we react to each other.
So whether we engage or not
could lead to either
a disaster
or a positive experience.
It-- Oh.
Right here.
There's the exit. Exit.
MIKE:
Follow them.
-BERNIE: Let's do it.
Let's get it!
-MIKE: Exit.
See you guys there.
I think right now
we all just want to survive.
ThisAmazing Race is
-everything for us.
-I'm just really proud
to represent my community,
and for everyone who looks
like me, who feels like me.
As a mixed kid growing up,
I never fit one category.
Like, I'm not
African American enough,
I'm not Hispanic enough,
and I feel like
that puts you like,
"I don't belong anywhere."
No matter how you identify,
no matter where you're from,
no matter who you are, you can
achieve any of your dreams.
You can do whatever you want.
Are we gonna be okay? [laughs]
-The stream. Come on.
-The stream. Yup.
"Dip it in the stream
to reveal your next clue."
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
POPS:
Okay, got to go
-back out to the entrance.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-To get in the cab.
-Yeah.
-Okay.
-Yup.
SCOTT:
Roadblock. Express Pass.
"Five successful passes
before the ball hits the ground
to receive your next clue."
-Okay.
-Okay. "Only one Express Pass
available to win."
-Okay, I'll do the Roadblock.
-Go, go, go, go, go.
JACK:
Good job, Car!
-Three.
-JACK: Almost there.
Nice.
-And four. Come on.
-JACK: Yes!
-Yes! Yes!
-Express Pass.
LORI:
Oh, my gosh. We've got
other teams here, Scott.
Go, go, go, go, go.
-You got this, you got this.
-Shoot. No, too far.
Okay, you've got two more
minutes, and then we got to go.
-ANA: Okay.
-JACK: Hi.
Okay. Five times? Okay.
-Oh. Okay.
-CARSON: Come on, Jack.
[Jack laughs]
LORI:
You got this. Yo!
I want this Express Pass so bad.
-You've already completed it?
-Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-You've already completed it?
-Yeah.
Ah. Sorry.
You got this, honey!
[Jack grunts]
LORI:
You got this, babe!
-Oh.
-LORI: You got this,
you got this.
Sorry. Sorry.
-LORI: Whoo!
-Five!
-LORI: Yay!
-That was five.
LORI:
Yeah, baby!
SCOTT:
Hey, do you want to try?
-LORI: No.
-No? We're good.
LORI:
Both of those teams
were trying
to get the Express Pass,
and, I mean,
I probably could have
eventually gotten it,
but I just didn't want
to waste that time.
SCOTT:
And I also feel like if we are
the first to leave,
it puts a little bit
of a psychological pressure
on the other teams.
BOTH:
Route Info.
KEOGHAN: Teams must now
make their way by taxi
to Yasaka Koshin-do Temple,
where they'll find
their next clue.
-Okay.
-Yeah.
Okay. Let's get a taxi.
-Jack, what are you feeling?
Should we cut it?
-No.
-Until they leave,
we should not leave.
-Okay.
Oh, my God. I don't know
if I can do this. Geez.
Should we just go?
JONATHAN:
Do you want to leave, babe?
Give me a couple more tries.
[sighs]
Whoa. [gasps]
Want to keep trying? Babe?
That's two.
Three.
Come on, babe. Four.
One more. Just relax, babe.
Oh, my God. You did it, babe.
-Did we do it? Oh, my
-JONATHAN: You did it!
-Okay. Sorry. We're done.
-JONATHAN: Oh, yeah!
-You did it, girl!
-Yeah, I did it.
-Oh, my God.
-JACK: Okay, they got it.
They got it.
-Let's go.
-Oh, my
-Okay.
-Taxi. Taxi.
JONATHAN: We may be able
to catch those other teams,
-so come on.
-Here's the Express Pass.
[gasps]
Oh, my baby did it. She did it.
Let's go, babe.
HOLDEN:
It's right there. I see it.
-All right. All right.
-HOLDEN: Run up the escalator.
Go. Track 23.
Track 23 right here. Right here.
To Kyoto? Yeah.
-I think
we're working smart so far.
-Yeah.
-Josiah's gonna do
the Roadblock.
-I'm up for some kicks.
And I'm hoping it's
martial arts instead of soccer.
-So, the Express Pass is taken.
-Express Pass is taken.
ALYSSA:
He's got this.
This is my sport, but
[both laugh]
I played Division 1 soccer
at Temple University.
Soccer's just
a part of who I am.
Competition's a part
of who I am because of soccer.
He's totally got it.
-JOSIAH: Five?
-Five?
-That's five.
-You did it!
Arigato. Arigato. Arigato.
Thank you all so much.
-[overlapping chatter]
-Arigato.Sorry.
-Scott, watch where
you're walking, please.
-Sorry.
-All right.
-All right.
All right. Detour.
Detour. "Fold It or Fling It?"
KEOGHAN:
Origami embodies the principles
of patience,
precision and mindfulness.
This captivating art form,
revered for its simplicity
and elegance,
is taught here at an early age.
This Detour requires teams
to build a giant-sized crane,
perhaps origami's
most famous design.
Figuring out
the precise pattern of folds
could have some teams
completely unraveled.
But if teams can bring
their bird home to roost,
they'll get a clue
and can keep on racing.
This Detour requires teams
to use spikes,
throwing stars and a blowgun.
Using them is simple,
but being dead-on accurate
won't be easy.
-I say Fling It. Ninja.
-Yup, I say Fling It.
-Yup, we're gonna Fling It.
-Fling It.
SCOTT: So we think
we're in first place.
We're hopeful
that we just keep etching away
-and just keep moving forward
-LORI: Yeah.
-Budo Center? It's
-[man speaks quietly]
-Yeah? Okay?
-LORI: Yes. Okay.
Yes. He knows.
Okay. We'll leave our backpacks.
We'll be right back.
Come on, Mom. Don't run.
If your leg hurts too much,
we can't run
on the grounds anyways, right?
Okay, it's saying something.
I see it.
"Jingu Shrine."
This is our next place, Mom.
So now we go back.
-Ooh! Be careful. [laughs]
-All right. Be careful.
COURTNEY:
"Buy a sheet
of magic fortune paper."
That means we have to search.
JASMIN:
We do.
JEFF:
"Who's up for some kicks?"
Let's go, Pops.
You-you got it.
Concentrate. Concentrate.
-Oh!
-JEFF: There you go.
You had some power
behind that kick.
JACK:
Detour.
"Fold It or Fling It?"
I think, hit the targets,
right? Yeah.
Fling. Yeah, Fling for sure.
That sounds so much fun.
-Let's go.
-Okay. You got the clue?
-It's right here, babe.
Right here. Right here.
-Oh, my gosh.
-We're gonna do Fling It.
-Okay, let's go.
JONATHAN: You're good
at throwing things, babe.
-I've seen you.
-Okay, let's go.
JEFF:
Let's go, Pops.
You got it now.
-[grunts]
-Good job, Pops.
Keep going all in like that,
but don't-don't
get frustrated, Pops.
Come on.
Yeah.
Getting closer and closer, Pops.
There he is. Come on.
-Five. That did it. Come on.
-All right.
Where we at? Where the clue at?
Where-where to next?
All right, all right.
-CARRIGAIN: Is this the box?
-BERNIE: Yes.
"A marked vendor."
-BRETT: Thank you. Thank you.
-MIKE: We'll be right back.
Remember the exact path.
We need to get in that taxi.
MIKE:
Power walk. Power walk.
-Okini, okini.
-Have a nice day.
All right.
And then we dip it in the water.
-Have a nice day.
-BOTH: Thank you.
"Buy a sheet of magic fortune
paper from the marked vendor"
"And dip it in the stream
to reveal your next clue."
-It says the shrine name.
-But is that our clue?
NICK:
Oh, yellow.
Here it is. Write this down.
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
Shiramine
J-I-N-G-U Shrine.
-All right, let's go back
where we came from.
-Let's go.
-See, good thing
we held our taxi.
-That was cool.
We are trying to find--
oh, my God, it's drying--
the Shiramine Jingu Shrine?
-Shiramine?
-Mm-hmm.
-No.
-It's not here.
-It's okay.
-All right, so
-Okay, so we do need a taxi.
Thank you.
[lively crowd chatter]
HAN: Go, go, go, go, go,
go, go, go, go, go, go.
Go, go.
Exit, exit, exit, exit.
-HOLDEN: Shimogamo?
-Fast, fast. We're in a race.
We're gonna move with urgency
and purpose
until our dying breath.
There he is.
-Got it?
-Let's go.
-Is that a?
-That's a taxi. Taxi!
-Oh, he got somebody in there.
-Oh, he has someone in there.
BRETT:
Perfect.
Shiramine Jingu Shrine?
-Shiramine.
-Yes.
-Yeah.
-Taxi!
-Right here.
BERNIE:
Yeah.
I mean, how sure are we
that it's in another location?
-Why don't we ask
the bus driver?
-COURTNEY: Yeah.
I have a question.
Oh, my God. Did it dry?
It did.
Okay, we got to write it down
'cause it dried.
-Okay.
-We got to wet it again.
Okay, here. We have water.
-JASMIN:
Yeah, let's write it down.
-Okay.
JASMIN:
I couldn't even ask him.
Oh, man.
I know patience
is the name of the game.
Like you said, we don't want
to be walking too far.
-JASMIN: Taxi!
-Oh, she got people in there.
-So she wouldn't
have been able to stop.
-Okay.
SCOTT: Thank you.
Let's go.
SCOTT:
Fold It, Fling It.
-Let's Fling It as ninjas.
-Okay.
-LORI: Hello.
-SCOTT: Konnichiwa.
We chose
the ninja challenge because
we knew if our boys
could choose it,
-it would definitely be
ninja stuff.
-Yes.
SCOTT: And we were gonna get
to dress up in a ninja costume.
So, even though
it might take extra minutes
to get the costume on,
it still was like,
"Let's do this for our boys."
Let's see how practice goes.
Each of us must hit
the designated targets
with three spikes,
three stars, three blow darts.
Just go right here.
SCOTT:
Karate chop, release the thumb,
but keep the fingers up.
Just release the thumb
like that. Okay.
So the first one was like
this small little pipe thing.
Then the star
and then the blow dart.
So we only need three total
between both of us?
SCOTT:
No, three each.
SCOTT:
Okay.
-Uh-oh.
-Yup.
ERIKA:
"Who's up for some kicks?"
Friggin' excited
it's a sport one.
One.
I played lots of sports
in high school.
Four different
sports in high school.
And then played volleyball
through college.
Three.
Four.
Five. Yes?
All right, let's go, Mom.
Wait. I knew you would kill it.
I knew you would kill it.
ERIKA:
You could have done that.
Let's see. Is somebody in these?
JASMIN:
Taxi! There's nobody
in that first one.
-Court, see if you can get him.
-Thank you.
Konnichiwa.We need to go here.
-Sure. Okay.
-Thank you.
-Thank you.
ALYSSA AND JOSIAH:
Detour.
-"Fold It or Fling It?"
Fling It?
-Me too.
Fling It.
We're gonna do Fling It.
We're gonna do Fling It.
Hey, if you can't get this this
next time, let's switch to Fold.
Fling It. Fling It or Fold It.
-Fling or Fold It. Fling It.
-Okay, let's
Scott and Lori.
Oh, goodness gracious.
JACK:
This is so us.
We are nerds. We watch anime.
We were feeling the fantasy.
-To fight. Yeah.
-This is the coolest thing ever.
Be accurate like the ranger.
Be accurate
like the ranger. Okay.
-Hi.
-Hi.
-This is practice.
-Oh, it's practice?
-This is practice, right?
-Oh, I got it.
Ooh.
Ooh!
I started with the spikes,
and I threw eight of them
in a row,
and not one of 'em stuck.
[laughs]
JONATHAN: Scott and Lori.
They're just here.
-We could beat 'em.
-Okay.
They're both here.
-We can beat 'em.
-We can beat 'em.
-Okay.
JONATHAN:
When I read the clue
and it said,
"Be a ninja,"
I mean, I just I just
My logical brain just
shut down at that point,
and I became a child again.
It's all in the wrist.
All in the wrist.
Gosh.
-SCOTT: Okay.
-I'm sorry.
I can't get this, honey.
-Okay.
-SCOTT: Okay, we're switching.
LORI: If it was just the stars
and just the blow darts,
we would have gotten that.
We would have left,
like, really fast.
But it was just that first thing
that I'm, like,
I just couldn't get it.
JACK:
Okay.
Oh, wow.
The blow gun seems pretty easy.
Got it.
Got three in a row,
so let's just work on these.
-Okay. The spikes?
-Yup.
Where's Scott and Lori?
-Right here.
-Oh, there they are.
-[laughs]
-JONATHAN: Oh.
-I feel pretty badass,
I got to say.
-[vocalizes]
Grab your stuff. Let's go.
ANA:
Good luck, you guys.
Okay. Ready, babe?
Oh, look at this.
-Uh
-Okay. Watch how
they're doing it, honey.
-Take it, fold it in half.
-Oh, half, half, quarter. Yes.
-LORI: Half, half. Oh.
-And then flatten it out.
-Open it and then
-Yup, flatten out. Yup.
Okay.
Same thing on the other side.
-Open
-SCOTT: Yup, flatten out.
-SCOTT: Oh, wow.
-Oh, goodness. We could start it
and come back and look.
-Are we folding on this?
-Oh, my gosh!
-Oh, that's awesome.
-We're folding this.
-Okay. Okay.
-Okay. We got to work together.
-Put your paper down.
-Yeah.
I get this corner.
You get this corner.
-And then Okay.
-And we go this way.
-Yup.
-Make sure it's lined up.
Oh, my gosh. This is rad!
SCOTT:
I love folding paper airplanes
for my boys.
We're doing that,
like, usually in church,
-every Sunday or whatever.
-[laughs]
-Something to pass the time.
-Every Sunday.
Okay, stay there. You go that
corner, I'll go this corner?
-Okay.
-We're bending.
So it was exciting to do
a paper folding kind of thing,
but I realized this was not
something I could do on my own.
LORI:
Nice, nice, nice.
Match those corners.
We got to even this air out.
I knew I had to communicate
effectively with her
to help her help me
fold the paper
properly the way
we needed to do it.
-LORI:
Okay. I got it from here. Okay.
-Okay.
-SCOTT: Diagonal.
-Diagonal.
We're gonna do the best
we can, okay, babe?
Absolutely.
MIKE: You got this, bro.
Nice and easy.
You got it.
-Wow.
-Nice!
-Five. Let's go!
-Good job, boys. Thank you.
-Oh, my God.
-Perfect Roadblock.
-Let's start a soccer team
when I come back.
-That was a quick one.
-[speaking Japanese]
-Thank you.
Arigato, arigato.
Let's go, baby! Let's move!
Detour.
You want to do the Fold It?
-I think so.
-I think so, too.
Think we're going up here.
-I think we need to
-I think it's up here.
-stop and get directions.
-Okay.
Hey, which one'd you guys do?
Jeff, Pops.
-MELINDA: What'd you do?
-What'd you do?
We did the Roadblock so far,
and now we just
Oh, you need the Detour still?
-Yeah. Yeah.
-Hey, Detour's up this way.
-Come on.
-Thank you.
-And then we can do it together.
-Thank you.
ERIKA:
We ran into Pops and Jeff,
which we have been
working really closely with.
-We were gonna Fold It.
-POPS: Yeah. Yeah.
-JEFF: Okay.
JEFF:
We have an alliance
with Melinda and Erika.
It's a parent-and-child thing.
We both realized how much
alike Erika and I are
and how much alike
my pops and Melinda is.
It's right here on your left.
Go get the Detour done first.
You sure
it's right here on the left?
-Oh, to your left, yeah.
-Okay. All right, thank you.
That's why
you team up with people.
-The only two old teams left
-Yeah.
is a father-son
and a mother-daughter.
So we're like,
"Okay, we're gonna work
"to get both of us to the end
since everybody else is young."
Detour. "Fold It or Fling It?"
-We're gonna Fold It. Okay.
-POPS: You can Fold It.
ERIKA:
I'm so glad we saw you guys.
-POPS: Yeah. Me too, man.
JEFF:
Yeah, we walked right past
the clue box.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, we're good.
There was still five clues
in there, so we're good.
-That's it, baby,
you got it, you got it.
-That's it?
-You got, like, seven.
-Five. Okay. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
"Who's up for some kicks?" I am.
-She is.
-Let's do it.
MARK: "Find your next clue."
-Got it. Go, go, go.
-[mutters] Okay. Let's go.
BERNIE: Ah, Carrigain.
Taxi, taxi, taxi.
Hi!
We had decided
that the next Roadblock
probably should be something
that I should do
because Bernie did
the first two.
Unfortunately, like, I am not
someone who plays sports
that involve balls
because I'm very clumsy.
Ooh. Oh.
ANA:
I didn't do it right.
-[Carson gasps]
-Ooh. How did you do that?
-CARSON: I don't know.
-Down.
-CARSON: Yup.
-JACK: Okay.
All right, you've got it.
-Yeah.
-I need to get it now.
Okay. Yeah,
I think we can do this.
-ANA: Ooh, this is hard.
-Should we just try it?
-I think maybe we should, yeah.
-All right, let's just try to
-We're gonna try it.
-I haven't gotten it
at all, but..
JACK: We have to be perfect.
CARSON: As long
as we can get those spikes,
we'll be good to go.
I'm so excited right now.
This is an authentic dojo.
JONATHAN: Give it a chance.
ANA:
I don't know what I'm doing.
[groans]
Okay, let's go.
We're going to Fold.
This is just too tricky for us.
-I'm gonna start with this.
-Okay.
At the performance range,
there was not
an unlimited supply
of these spikes to throw.
You had to land
every single spike,
every single star
and every single dart,
both of us,
perfectly, in each run.
Okay.
-Ooh. I've already messed up.
-I think we got to switch.
-All right, we're switching.
-Okay.
We're gonna switch.
We're gonna switch.
It was almost comical
how quickly I threw these darts,
-and then we said
-"We're switching."
"Okay, we're switching."
-ALYSSA: Way to go, guys.
-JACK: We're switching.
-We're switching. Yeah.
-Oh, you're switching.
ALYSSA:
We love to play darts.
I'm the first person
at a party to be like,
"Who's my cornhole partner?"
And it's always him.
It's not about force.
Hold that.
-Holding all three?
-Yep.
Do you know
how to fold a paper crane?
-I have done it before, yeah.
-Me too, but not really.
CARSON:
Okay.
A memory came rushing back to me
of a little boy
with a bowl cut haircut
in the library reading
from an origami book,
doing a bunch of paper cranes
instead of hanging out
with the jocks.
-Hey, guys.
-CARSON AND JACK: Hey.
-So good to see you.
-Hey!
That ninja was a little harder
than I thought.
-Yeah.
-It was so hard, but it was fun.
All right, baby.
Then our big square, unfold.
Fold the other way.
No, wait, it tucks
after
Wait, hang on, hang on,
-hang on.
-Let's go watch her.
Don't break it.
Don't break it, okay?
LORI:
Well, open that one level.
-SCOTT: Flip the whole thing.
-LORI: Fold it
-to the other side.
-Open it. Open all the way up.
-LORI: Okay.
-SCOTT: Fold it in on itself.
Okay, let's go.
Okay, let's walk
I think it's this way.
I think it's this way.
HOLDEN:
Here, you dip it.
That's really cool.
Okay, write that down.
Write that down. Here.
BOTH:
"Shiramine Jingu Shrine."
-HOLDEN: Let's move.
-HAN: So we're going
-HOLDEN: Just show him.
-here.
BOTH:
"Who's up for some kicks?"
-I'll do it.
-I am. Oh. Go ahead.
-[laughs]
-BERNIE: You got it, girl.
You got it.
JASMIN:
Go, go, go.
-CARRIGAIN:
Yellow just got here.
-BERNIE: Okay. Okay. Okay.
Can we play?
I'm totally not a soccer player.
JASMIN:
I don't believe
Courtney has, like,
a lot of experience with sports.
I played basketball in school.
Courtney did band.
Oh, man. This might be harder
than I thought. Okay.
MIKE:
"Fold It or Fling It?"
We're flinging it.
We're flinging it.
This is where we calm down.
Calm down.
Yeah, we're flinging it, though.
Wait, wait, wait, wait.
This is all wonky-doodle.
Uh, I'm scared about it
not lining up perfectly.
My oldest daughter
actually loves origami.
It's totally different making it
on little tiny pieces of paper
than that giant one,
so hopefully,
I can do well at this.
She'll be proud.
-Hold on. Kick it
-From the center?
Yup. You need help?
Hold on, babe.
You pulled too hard. You
-Just give me a sec.
-This isn't perfect, though.
JONATHAN:
Okay, stop talking
and just make it perfect.
Okay, we got to look
at what we're looking for.
Yeah, we got to do
Fold It is this way, it says.
-Oh, it does?
-Oh, nice, nice.
-Where'd you see that?
-Yeah, they all took off
their shoes.
-There's a lot
of people in there.
-Oh, how many are there?
Yep. There's a lot
of people in there.
Oh, we did it backwards.
-Okay.
-How did that happen?
Oh, the kids
are doing it right there.
MELINDA: Just have
to watch the demonstration.
Look at this.
[grunts rhythmically]
So I missed one step,
and I got to wait for them
to get the whole thing
over again.
BRETT AND MARK:
Detour.
"Fold It or Fling It?"
-Just pick one.
-Fold. Fold It.
Thank you.
Arigato.
Ninja.
MIKE:
We see Josiah and Alyssa
right there.
Looks like
they're struggling a little bit.
We were excited
to see them there
because
they were way ahead of us.
It's so tough
because we know this is hard
and this is gonna be
time-consuming,
and we have no idea how hard or
time-consuming the origami is.
MIKE:
We're gonna give it a shot.
-Let's give it a shot.
-Let's go to the training.
JASMIN:
You're doing great, Courtney!
-Okay.
-Stay calm.
Oh, Lord.
-Sorry. Sorry.
-BERNIE: You got it,
-Carrigain.
-COURTNEY: All right. I'm just
getting the hang of it.
Oh, that was a knee. [grunts]
[Courtney shrieking]
Close.
BERNIE:
As long as I don't see
Han and Holden,
I'm feeling good.
Go, but, Han
Just go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
Roadblock.
"Who's up for some kicks?"
-Kicks. Soccer.
-I am.
I played soccer in high school.
You know, I don't want
to pat myself on the back,
but looking at first team,
all-league
my sophomore year, so
-But what-what division
were you?
-Don't talk about that.
HAN:
I believe in you!
-It's Han and Holden.
-HAN: You got it, Holden!
HOLDEN: I've done this
a million times before.
This is how
I'd warm up for soccer games
and soccer practice,
juggling with my teammates.
Now I'm just doing it
with Japanese men
that I've never met in my life.
MAN:
Whoa!
-HAN: Yeah!
-We're good?
Let's go! Hey, hey, hey,
hey, hey. Let's go!
-[speaking Japanese]
-Arigato.
Still got it. [laughs]
HOLDEN:
Just go. Go, go, go, go, go, go.
-BERNIE: Oh, my gosh.
-JASMIN: I know.
HAN:
That was what we needed.
Oh, my God.
We've been waiting for a break
to show that, like,
"Hey, we can move,
we can get to the front."
We're still
in the bottom third of teams.
We want to get to the
front third as fast as possible,
and the only way to do that is
to just keep the faith
and keep pushing.
[grunting]
JASMIN:
There you go, girl.
[grunting]
BERNIE:
Is that five? Let's go!
-That was five!
-CARRIGAIN: That was five.
[laughter]
Hey!
BERNIE: Man, you're gonna
give me a heart attack. [laughs]
JASMIN:
You got this, Courtney.
[Courtney exhales]
Don't you give up.
I'm trying, Jazzy.
I really am.
-JASMIN: Keep believing.
-COURTNEY: I'm trying.
Stay focused, Court.
We are the only team
left here, but
we still know
that anything is possible.
Positivity.
[grunts]
JASMIN:
Stay in it, Court.
CARSON:
And then Yes.
That's This is it.
Then this.
Nice. That's a good one.
-That's a good one.
-Good enough. Flip it.
Express Pass?
Having that in our hands
means everything.
But of course,
we're not gonna use it today.
So, we still want to do well
and nail this challenge.
We didn't leave it
Did we leave it punctured
the other way?
-That would be wrong
that way, right?
-Oh.
LORI:
Flip it.
Okay, but you got to be careful.
-Sorry. Hey.
-There we go.
-Jeff, let me help you.
-JEFF: All right.
Let me help you.
Let me help you.
Okay, let me, here.
-So go like this.
-Yeah. Okay.
And now flatten it
-This way. Okay.
-this way. Yup.
Hey, let me know if you need
help on the next one.
JEFF:
Thanks again.
-Hold it.
-Holding.
-CARSON: Perfect.
This is what we want.
Yeah. Okay.
-Diamond. Finally, diamond.
-Yeah, yeah.
The wings get folded down.
-Dad, see what I'm saying?
-There you go. Yup.
-Yeah, yeah, yeah.
-Yeah. We got it.
Don't touch it. Don't touch it.
Don't touch it.
Okay.
-Arigato.
-Arigato.
-You guys got it? Awesome.
-It's amazing.
CARSON:
Okay.
[Lori sighs]
LORI:
Yes.
Yes, please. Yes?
-Good job.
-Thank you.
-Yes!
-Arigato. Arigato.
-[whooping]
LORI:
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
ERIKA:
Don't worry about
anyone else's race but ours.
-Ah.
-Arigato.
BOTH: Thank you, thank you,
thank you, thank you.
Thank you, thank you.
ERIKA:
Nice job, you guys.
-Okay, baby, we got this.
-Route Info.
-"Race to the Pit Stop."
-Oh, my gosh.
Buddhism is among the world's
most popular religions,
practiced by tens
of millions here in Japan
at the more than 70,000 temples,
just like this one--
Konkai Komyo-ji.
Teams will find me here
in these tranquil gardens.
The last team to check in here
will be eliminated.
LORI:
Aah! Nothing's up there.
-SCOTT: Shuttles.
-We need a taxi.
We believe this is it.
Um, Budo Center.
Yes. This is it. Oh, babe, look.
-It's a giant crane.
-Oh, my God.
The teams are all here.
-Make sure everything's crisp.
-Yes.
-Yup. Perfect.
-Okay.
-Four, and then a diagonal.
-Do you want to do this first?
-Let's just do that.
-The first steps, yeah.
-Oh, oh, oh.
-Can we get a check?
CARSON:
Domo arigato gozaimasu.
-I'll hold it now.
-Oh, yeah.
-Good job.
-JACK: Yes!
-Domo arigato gozaimasu.
-Thank you. Thank you.
Arigato gozaimasu.
Thank you so much.
We definitely should have went
with Fold. You were right.
From now on,
you're picking the Detours.
JACK:
Do you think
we're gonna get second?
-CARSON: I don't know. Maybe.
-JACK: Okay. Taxi.
SCOTT:
We're going
to Komyo-ji Temple? Yes?
-LORI: Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
-SCOTT: Okay. Uh, trunk?
Konnichiwa.
I think we're team number one.
I can't even believe
I'm saying that.
-I don't know.
-I think we're team number one.
Got it.
-Do you want to try it?
-Yeah.
Let's try it.
We're going to try it.
JOSIAH:
There's no line,
so we might as well.
ALYSSA:
Okay. So we only have
three of each here.
We don't get an extra one.
We have to be perfect over here.
ALYSSA:
It was extremely hard
to be able
to complete it perfectly,
three for three, three
for three, three for three.
We're not good at this at all.
I'm an athlete at heart.
That has just created
a really competitive soul in me.
Alyssa sets a high bar
for everyone, including herself.
She can't half-ass anything.
ALYSSA:
We just didn't want to give up.
We'll try again.
JOSIAH: Wouldn't it be The
Amazing Raceif it was easy.
-Fold one leg
-No, no, no. These are the legs.
So you pulled them up?
I don't remember already.
[sputters]
Hey, we got the hard flip part.
[laughs]
-Maybe we flip it this way.
-Not maybe.
-Do you know for sure?
-Flip it.
Just try it with me.
Try it with me.
-We're done.
-Can we get a check?
-Is that it?
-That's it.
Go halfway and flip it.
-No, we open one side up.
-Oh, open one side up.
-Good job.
-[Ana cheers quietly]
Let's just calmly do it
one step at a time.
"The last team
to check in will be eliminated."
Hey, nice job.
Great job, you guys.
-Great job.
-Get it.
LORI:
Jack and Carson
were right on our tail.
It's anyone's game.
We think we're in second place,
-which is great.
-Amazing.
Okay, trunk, trunk.
Hurry, please.
Is it right here?
I think we made the right
decision by switching in
Oh, this is it? Oh, wow.
CARSON:
Oh,arigato gozaimasu.
-JACK: Come on, Car.
-Yeah.
JACK:
You think he's in here?
CARSON:
He must be.
-Should we look down this way?
-Let's go that way.
SCOTT:
Great idea.
-Could that be?
-Ah, here. Yeah, here.
-Here?
-I think so.
KEOGHAN:
Okay, and we have
another team coming.
JACK:
Hey.
SCOTT:
You got this.
Nicely done.
Nicely done, Carson.
Welcome to Kyoto, Japan!
JACK AND CARSON:
Arigato gozaimasu.
-Thank you. Thank you.
-Arigato.
You know
what we need to know right now?
-LORI: Yes.
-We need to know
who is team number one
-on this leg of the race.
-Oh, my gosh.
It could be Scott and Lori.
It could be.
-[Scott laughs]
-KEOGHAN: It is.
And I do have some great news
for you.
As the winners of this leg of
the race, you have won $5,000.
[cheering]
KEOGHAN:
$2,500 each.
You probably have
the same bank account.
-$5,000 for her. [laughs]
-Well, it'll be $5,000
for me, Phil.
Let's be real here.
It's $5,000 for me.
And let's be honest,
this is super close,
all the way to the mat,
you guys running all the way in.
The good news is you're here,
and I do have some news for you.
We're letting
all the teams know,
sometime during the next leg
of the race,
you are going to encounter
another Amazing Racefirst.
-[Lori gasps]
-Oh.
Another big surprise.
-Which is?
-Okay.
It's called the Driver's Seat.
-Oh, whoa.
-Driver's Seat?
-KEOGHAN: Yes.
And if you get there first,
you will have the power
to determine how much work
all the other teams have to do
in order to get their next clue.
[all exclaiming]
-My gosh.
-So, you're gonna want
to get there first
so that you have the power
to then dictate
exactly how much everybody else
has to do to get their clue.
-Okay. Okay.
-CARSON: Whoa!
-JACK: Okay.
HOLDEN:
Detour. "Fold It or Fling It?"
How's your hand-eye?
-HAN: It's not terrible.
-HOLDEN: Fold It. Fold It.
-All right, let's do it.
-All right, let's go.
-Uh, we should ask for help.
-Uh-huh.
CARRIGAIN:
Okay.
Let's crush this Detour.
Let's crush this Detour.
Let's crush this Detour.
-Oh, man.
-JASMIN: Keep pushing, Court.
All right. Just
It was challenging,
like I knew what I needed to do,
but all the elements,
like the heat,
the exhaustion,
the muscle soreness.
I was so frustrated,
I just want this to be done.
I feel really bad.
Should have done this one.
You okay?
Got three, baby. All right.
Damn.
Hey. No, no, no.
We can do this.
We're gonna get this, okay?
We're gonna get this, babe.
I'm a very optimistic,
positive person.
I know
Alyssa's gonna go to a ten,
she knows I'm gonna go to a one,
and we got to meet at a five
so that we can move forward.
We're not going out.
Let's try again.
NICK:
Yeah.
That's it.
Oh, yeah.
All right, that's it.
-This is good.
I'm good with this.
-Let me try.
Beautiful. All right,
we're on to the next one.
[man shouts]
-I messed up already.
-It's all right.
Origami?
We're both stubborn
and headstrong, and
it takes a lot for us to,
like, quit something.
JOSIAH:
We don't want to go to origami
and start from square one again,
but we had
to swallow that pride.
-We can do this origami, babe.
-Yeah.
I-I It doesn't seem like
you're confident at this point.
-I don't want to guess.
-Okay, then let's go back.
What?
I don't know what you're doing.
Sometimes I can figure it out
by just trying it again.
I don't want
But I don't want to be confused.
You don't want to help me.
That's okay.
No, I don't want
to get confused, babe.
We'll watch,
we'll wait and try again.
I don't want to guess.
JOSIAH: I'm really worried
about walking in there
and seeing everybody gone.
-Did you guys switch?
-ALYSSA: Yeah, we switched.
Nope,
you're doing it wrong there.
This has to go like this, Mom.
Is anyone not here yet?
Bernie and Carrigain
are behind us,
and so are Han and Holden.
Nah, we just undid
what we just did.
-There's people behind us.
-Hey. Yeah, I agree.
So as long as we're starting
here, I feel way better now.
I'm still a ninja,
just so everybody knows.
JASMIN: I'm so proud of you
for not giving up.
[Jasmin gasps]
-Kick. You made it.
-Courtney, you did it.
-Look what you just did.
-[crying]
Look what you just did!
Yes! Yes!
-Thank you.
-You did it.
-COURTNEY: Oh, my God.
-You didn't give up.
You didn't quit.
You did great. Let's go.
[birds singing]
I know
that I can do hard things,
but sometimes it gets so
challenging
when you're so close.
Like, you're hoping
for something,
and it's just, like,
taking a while to come.
Just, like,
the last four years of life
-have been such a fight,
you know?
-JASMIN: Yeah.
In 2020,
I had to stop everything to,
like, rush home to Mississippi
to take care of my mom,
who was diagnosed
with terminal brain cancer.
She went from healthy
to sick.
I gave everything
to try to see my mom live.
And so, sometimes
when things get hard, I just
you know, I'm afraid that things
are just not gonna work out
sometimes,
but I've learned how to just
-keep moving forward.
-JASMIN: Mm-hmm.
I would love for my mom
to be able to see me do this,
but I know
that she's watching over me,
and that just gives me the fuel
and the fire to keep going.
-That's right.
-[sighs] Down but not out.
Down but not out. That's right.
Oh, look at 'em run. Oh!
-Yeah. Wow.
-ANA: Whoo!
Oh, God.
I am pleased to tell you
that you are the third team
to arrive.
Pretty good.
-Got a little power
in your pocket.
-JONATHAN: Yeah. Show him.
KEOGHAN:
Nice. You pick up
the Express Pass
and you arrive in the top three.
Oh, we feel great
having the Express Pass.
All in all,
I think it was a good day.
-All right, you have my bag?
-Yeah.
HOLDEN:
Fold It. Fold It.
Oh, dude, everyone's here, bro.
This challenge,
compared to the other challenge,
seems more doable because we can
keep coming back and trying it.
We don't have to be perfect.
-JEFF: Had a journey today, huh?
-HOLDEN: Oh, my God. Yeah.
-Fighting right now.
-JEFF: Heck yeah.
Dude, I freakin' wish
I knew how to make one of these.
I feel like
we did 'em as kids, man.
I know. And then it's, like,
I've become an adult.
Become less cool.
-Maybe
-Nope. That is not right.
That's not right.
I feel good seeing how hard
it is for everybody,
so I'm hoping
that we can just stay focused,
do a little bit at a time, and
get out here before all of them.
Detour.
"Fold It or Fling It?"
I say Fling It.
What do you think?
-Fling It.
-You can hit a target, yeah?
Yeah.
Taxi?
[groans]
The hardest part
is that there's only three
You have to be perfect.
NICK:
You have to be perfect.
Son of a gun.
I did bad on that one, Mike.
Sit down for a second.
Let's both sit down.
Let's both sit down.
NICK:
Mike and I are avid meditators.
I know that sounds very ironic
as these two jocks
from Brooklyn.
But back in 2015,
I was assaulted,
and I had my jaw wired shut
for three months.
I had to figure out a way
to deal with all the thoughts
that were running
through my mind.
Every morning, we start our day
by checking in with each other
and a daily meditation together.
-Yeah, 'cause this
-That's fine now,
'cause these match now, though.
-I think that's good now.
-Yeah.
-To the point, right?
-Yeah, to the point.
Okay. Right there.
-Over.
-And then it becomes
a sail again. Yeah.
Here, in. Perfect. There it is.
There it is, babe. Good job.
When in Kyoto,
you make giant origami cranes.
Yeah. Make a good wing.
We're good now.
Okay. Check?
Brought it down.
Stop. We know
we got this step right.
-Good job.
-MELINDA: Thank you.
-Ah.
-Nice job.
-Good job.
-Yes. Oh, my God. Yes. Yes.
JEFF:
Check?
-Good job.
-Yes! Let's go, Pops!
-We did that. Yes.
-All right, my man, all right.
All right, one step at a time.
Literally, one step at a time.
[groans]
This is so frustrating.
Do you want to see
what's going on over there?
'Cause this is taking
a lot of time.
You want to see?
It definitely is frustrating
to stay at something
for that long
and not be able to get it,
but anything is possible
in The Amazing Race.
We got to make the switch
and make it happen quickly.
Feels a little good
to see Nick and Mike come in
from the ninja challenge.
So now they're starting
fresh here, just like we were.
NICK:
Are there two teams
behind us right now?
Yeah. We saw Bernie
and Carrigain and
Oh, yeah, yeah.
um, Courtney and Jasmin
at the Roadblock.
-That was the last time
we saw them, though.
-Okay.
So we're gonna go
with our ninjas. Fling It.
JASMIN:
Okay, I see it.
It's right here.
It's right here.
There's the clue box.
Aah! [laughs]
Okay, so we're gonna do Fold It.
COURTNEY:
We can do anything
we set our minds to,
and as long as
we don't give up on ourselves,
the possibilities are endless.
One more time.
You good, girl.
You're good.
ERIKA:
You got it, Mom?
Do you want me to take your bag?
You're good?
-MELINDA: Nope, I'm good.
-Okay.
Welcome to Kyoto, Japan!
BOTH:
Whoo!
Melinda and Erika,
I am pleased to tell you
that you are
the fourth team to arrive
-and you are team number four.
-We moved up.
-How did we do it?
-I don't know.
BRETT:
Let's go find this.
Where are we going?
MARK:
Let's go up the stairs.
Oh, look behind you
right over here.
Oh. Hey!
[laughter]
-Hi. Good job.
-Oh. Oh. Group hug.
Well, Brett and Mark,
I am pleased to tell you
that you are team number five.
-Yes!
-ERIKA: Nice job, you guys.
KEOGHAN:
All right, here we go.
Jeff and Pops-- welcome them in.
[cheering]
-Nice work, guys.
-Good job.
-[overlapping chatter]
-Arigato. Arigato.
-Arigato.
And you're gonna be very pleased
to hear
-that you are team number six.
-All right, all right
-ERIKA: Good job, guys.
-MELINDA: Great job.
-KEOGHAN: Yeah. Good spot to be.
-MARK: Yes.
I feel like we're feeling better
right now, but we
we got to do this right.
-I don't know what's going on.
-Unfold this.
I don't know
what's going on, bro.
NICK:
Mike doesn't even fold
his own clothes at home.
-[laughs]
-He, uh he drops his clothes
off at the Laundromat
and gets 'em all done for him.
-You're rushing.
-Okay.
You want to talk smack,
but my mom still folds
his laundry, so
-No
-[laughs]
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Grab it.
ALYSSA:
Okay. Check?
Did you guys understand it yet?
-HAN: No.
-All right.
No. We would have told you
if we did.
-I promise we'll tell you.
-Yeah.
-Arigato.
-Arigato.
-Thank you all so much.
-Thank you so much.
I'm gonna come back and train.
One day I'll be a ninja, okay?
Today I'm origami.
Do you guys want
to work together?
-Yeah, let's just work together.
-Let's work together.
'Cause all we have to do is beat
Bernie and Carrigain
-and the other team.
-Yeah. Let's do it. Let's do it.
Don't flick it. You did this.
Let's race hard
to the end, love,
-till we get to the Pit Stop.
-Okay.
-JASMIN: Fold It is right here.
-COURTNEY: Okay.
[quietly]:
We have to find
an available workstation.
NICK:
Mike, breathe. We got it.
Now she makes the square.
Do you have it?
'Cause I didn't get it.
No, because you turned around
-right when she was doing it,
Mike.
-All right.
JASMIN:
There are three teams
here with us.
Two of them are in this exact
Detour with us, Folding It,
and I think
there's one in the Fling It.
So, we still got a chance,
absolutely.
Okay. Holden, I really need you
to help me picture this.
I'm trying my best.
I'm also confused, though, Han.
-You got to
-No, no, no, no, no.
I know you're helping me.
I just
-MIKE: What are you doing?!
-All right, go back. Let's go.
-This was here.
-No, no, no, no!
-Okay, go.
-[scoffs]
-Why, Nick?
-Mike.
-Why?
-Just go back to the way it was.
Well, if you feel like
you've folded before,
-we might as well switch.
-Like I said, it's up to you.
Okay, so let's switch, then.
Okay, let's switch.
[singsongy]:
We're switching.
BERNIE:
Do we want to spend another hour
trying to get
three of these to stick?
Yeah, girl. We ain't gonna get
this. Let's go fold some paper.
JASMIN:
So, Bernie and Carrigain
just got here.
Now it's one, two
There are four teams here,
so we're still in it.
How far are you on this?
-Not too far.
-Not very far.
-It's very difficult.
-It's very difficult.
-Very, like
-Farther than us. [laughs]
Can you please listen to me?
Look, you're not even
doing it anymore.
Like, look from my angle.
It doesn't look right.
Them yelling is messing
with my brain.
HOLDEN:
Can you please stop
for this long?
HAN:
Can you please bring it?
Just tune 'em out,
just tune 'em out.
I think it's gonna fight back,
too, but this is biting, too.
Okay? This isn't just
fighting back. It's biting us.
I had invested so much of,
like, my emotion
just trying to catch up,
and, like,
seeing that slip away--
that, like,
really tested my patience.
We fought way too hard
to go home today.
HAN: I'm, like, 90% sure
this is right.
I'm 90% sure, too,
but that's not 100.
-HAN: I'm so sorry, Holden.
-HOLDEN: What?
-HAN: I didn't know.
-Don't apologize.
Just move, okay?
-Siblings,
-Focus. Focus, bro.
All right.
Do you?
It doesn't feel like you got it,
and it doesn't definitely
I know I don't have it.
If you think
you have what it takes
to win The Amazing Race,
then go to cbs.com/casting
and apply now.
The world is waiting for you.
BERNIE:
I did origami when I was a kid,
so I kind of
It's, like,
in the back of my brain
I know how to do it.
Feeling just very frustrated,
burnt out.
-HAN: Would you mind trying?
-HOLDEN: I did try, but
-Oh, no, that's good.
-I can't.
I don't know how to do it.
The fact that we're both nurses
does help us stay, like, calm
and collected under pressure.
We know that freaking out
doesn't help you think clearly.
Do we look like ninjas
or origami makers, Phil?
Alyssa and Josiah,
you're still in this race.
You're team number seven.
Congratulations.
-We'll take it.
-We'll take it.
I'm just happy
to still be in it.
-You got the mid,
and I got the top?
-Okay.
Doesn't that look right?
Dude, look at the inside
of that thing.
It is all crumpled up
and looks like
And then this came
to this corner.
Yes.
Can we get a check?
What? Can you help me?
It was supposed
to open up like a boat.
-It was supposed to?
-Yeah.
-Looking good.
We're looking good.
-Beautiful.
-No good.
-CARRIGAIN: Okay.
I have no idea what's wrong.
Zero clue what the issue is.
HAN:
How'd you guys do that step?
I think you might have folded it
on the wrong side.
Yeah. You guys didn't do
this first part right.
-Yeah.
-Gotcha.
HAN:
Nick and Mike
found our mistake
that was causing us so much
crinkleage in the paper.
This should not be folded here.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you to them.
-We cannot thank them enough.
-Truly.
-Oh.
-Be careful,
be careful, be careful.
[both muttering]
HOLDEN:
All right,
we're making progress.
-This is it.
-Can we get a check?
HOLDEN:
It's hard, but we're getting it.
And we're gonna fight
till we can't anymore.
-Good job.
-Yeah!
-Let's go!
-Let's go!
MIKE:
Arigato.
Arigato. Arigato.
Hold on. I just need a break.
I need a minute.
Try not to get frustrated.
Did we miss an extra fold here?
Dude, I can feel it.
Of all the arts and crafts
we did, we didn't do origami.
Uh-uh.
-Can we get a check, please?
-Check?
-Oh.
-Oh, sorry.
-Good job.
-Let's go!
Can I give you guys a hug?
Can I?
It's okay. Take a deep breath.
We're okay.
-Arigato.
-Arigato gozaimasu.
Phil!
Hello, Phil.
Nick and Mike, you probably know
what place you're in
at this point.
Three teams behind us,
so, nine, ten, 11.
-So we're team number eight.
-That would be correct.
-Good job with the math.
-[laughing]
Are these the wings,
and are those the head?
We just got to get this side.
-Something is not right here.
-Okay.
-Yeah, something's
not right there.
-Okay.
[Han sighs]
Brother and sister.
-MAN: Yes.
-KEOGHAN: Han and Holden.
Well, the great news is
you are team number nine.
I do need to tell you
that sometime
during the next leg of the race,
you are going to encounter
the Driver's Seat.
The first team to get
to the Driver's Seat
will be able
to choose how much work
the other teams have to do
to earn their next clue.
Okay, well,
we'll be ready for it,
and we'll keep on fighting.
Can we get a check?
Do you just want
to look at it again?
-Because we're so close.
-Okay.
-Good.
-Oh!
It's okay. It's okay.
We're right there.
CARRIGAIN: 'Cause it says,
make our way to the Pit Stop.
I don't know where
that temple's at.
-Taxi?
-No, it's full.
It's full. It's full.
It's full. It's full.
Taxi?
Ugh!
Another one coming.
-So you think
these are the wings?
-Yeah.
Taxi!
-Can we get a check?
-I think we did it, but
Taxi, please.
Taxi!
Taxi!
-CARRIGAIN: We go over there?
-BERNIE: Okay.
Taxi?
Yes. Thank you.
Please just say "Yes."
No good.
No? Okay. All right.
BERNIE:
Oh, my gosh.
Man, that was the worst feeling
in my entire life.
In the hospital
somebody would be dead by now.
Oh.
BERNIE:
Oh, my gosh.
Bernie and Carrigain, I can see
that the day is taking its toll.
-[laughing]: Best day ever.
-[crying]: It's been a hard day.
KEOGHAN:
Aw.
Why don't we just get this
out of the way?
You're not eliminated.
You're team number ten.
We've just sacrificed
so much to be here.
We want this so badly,
and I don't think
it's in either of us
to ever just give up.
Can we get a check, please?
JASMIN:
It was just one step
towards the beginning
that we did incorrectly,
and that threw us off.
-Good job.
-Thank you.
-Thank you.
-Thank you.
-COURTNEY: Oh, my goodness.
-Ah!
-COURTNEY: How beautiful.
-I know.
[Courtney laughs]
-Konnichiwa.
-Konnichiwa.
Courtney and Jasmin,
I'm really sorry to tell you
that you are the last team
to arrive.
Probably no big surprise
at this point.
No.
Unfortunately, you have
been eliminated from the race.
Okay.
Sad to hear,
but we're glad that we got to
-Mm.
-[laughs]
JASMIN:
Glad that we got to be here.
Don't regret saying yes
to taking on The Amazing Race.
And you are standing next to
somebody who clearly loves you.
Jasmin has a heart of gold.
She's such a giver.
She's so compassionate
and caring.
I can see us living
the rest of our life together.
It would be crazy for us
to stop dreaming
and challenging ourselves
just because
we only made it to leg three
ofThe Amazing Race.
Our story doesn't end here,
but we're still thankful
that we got
to have this experience
and be able
to take it forward with us.
Onto the next adventure.
CBS
and TOYOTA.

-Absolutely.
We want revenge,
